@uncleasriel said in response to this post, this is way too long for me to reblog again with even longer comments on it:
I was so annoyed that this was the choice for the series second episode. The Lawless Punk Wasteland of New York was a major subject of media fascination, to be sure. To go from Catherine's violent crime to a broader examination of violent crime overall seems like a natural direction to take the series. So why does this feel so bad?
I think it's the way the episode's inciting crime is portrayed - Young Kids Bullying Elderly Folks Because They Have No Morals - feels weird given 2020's sensibilities. it's hard to imagine young folks acting this badly without some justification or provocation. (This is definitely a relic of the 1980s where Inner City Urban Decay was as palpable as Terrorism or Fentanyl Crisis is today). Still, it feels uncomfortable to then see that the vigilante's solution to the hoodlums is to slit them up with claws seems excessive. I get that retributive violence was a common vibe for media of the 80s, but I feel that kicking the crap out of these kids would be sufficient - no need to murder them, except to start the episode with High Stakes.
Jace is such a disappointing character, because ethically he seems like the kind of character in the post George Floyd world we'd celebrate - a black man with a focus on community building, physical fitness, and a desire to help the people around him be able to deal with the problems in their community without having to turn to cumbersome institutions. But Catherine - a monied young woman who went from corporate lawyering to working for the District Attourney to "make a difference" - embodies more faith in the intitution of law and policing than a 2024 audience is willing to grant.
Especially when said attourney is a wealthy white woman at odds with a working class black man!
But Catherine's role as an investigator District Attorney still makes her entrenched in a system unwilling and unable to address the issues safely and effectively. It's quite disgusting here - the black man is using tough-on-crime rhetoric to argue copaganda points about how 'the laws are too lax' while also arguing that murderous vigilantism is the preferred response. Catherine's 'the system works' rhetoric feels very liberal - trust in the Powers That Be, even though we've seen them clearly fail her in the previous episode.
The nihilism of the 'color of our hats' almost seems palatable by comparison - at least there's an admission that the reality is broken, and those with a vested interest in their "team's" well-being will respond well towards their respective community. It's ugly but honest, which is more than Catherine's mealy-mouthed faith in a system that' obviously not working.
It's a cynicism which is at odds with the show's romantic aspirations, however. Vincent's world underground is free of these kinds of evil, and the already strong hints of a close-knit communitarian society in the tunnels would be at odds with such a cynical take. It seems there is a possibility for healthy communites with good information networks to get the word out about malefactors quickly - alas, they are a fantasy underground never-never land world! Definitely nothing the wicked bad surface world could hope to know abut or understand.
This show had won me over me in the pilot, with it's obvious sympathies towards the victims of violence. The suggestion that the Tunnel world was a place free of these evils due to a loving community was intriguing, and Catherine's brush with it forces her to reconsider her life, and use the healing she found there to propel her into helping others in her world. But already pivoting to such a loaded (and racialized) plot, with such aggressively falsely dichitomous take on the solution to the problem of violent crime... I really wish George r.r Martin chose some other plot for ep2!

this comment is from Febrauary and I only just noticed it now by chance, probably because as the tags say it was written at 2AM lol.
Anyways. My laptop wants to overheat so
First of all this part
Young Kids Bullying Elderly Folks Because They Have No Morals - feels weird given 2020's sensibilities. it's hard to imagine young folks acting this badly without some justification or provocation.
There was very clear reasoning behind the assault on Mrs. Dalby: She's a poor Black woman, and the people who attacked her were racist white people and looking to cause problems and knew they could get away with assaulting a poor Black woman because no one would bother protecting her.
I would not in any sense of the word describe them as 'young kids'. Just because they're white, and because Catherine refers to them as such, doesn't mean they're kids.
They're not bullying her for no reason, it's because they're racist and she's defenseless. She's on a run down filthy train by herself at night just trying to get home. They assault her and try to rob her because they know no one is going to protect her. The only other person who was in the train car already left, leaving her completely at their mercy.
the black man is using tough-on-crime rhetoric to argue copaganda points about how 'the laws are too lax'
That is absolutely not what is happening. He is talking about the systemic injustice that allows privileged people, like white men, to get away with violent crimes against minorities without any consequences, and how the law fails to actually protect the people who are the most vulnerable.
This episode is bad because it's hypocritical and racist. It's okay for Vincent to go around mauling people to protect Catherine, a white woman, but when a Black man does it to protect people who don't have the privilege of being absurdly rich with all the best lawyers and doctors money can buy, including Black women who are getting beaten on the ground and white girls who are about to become the victims of rape, and then suddenly it's bad.
Because it's a Black man using violence to protect the most vulnerable people in his community instead of Vincent, the lion man who only ever seem to protect Catherine, the rich white woman whose father is a powerful lawyer, who has no qualms about casually ripping a hundred dollar bill in half. Which she was casually just carrying around with her without apparently intending to buy anything.
It's a bad episode because it sets a blatant double standard that says using violence to defend people is only okay if you're doing it to protect rich white women.
K. Laptop is throwing a fit so bye

Hi !!! :)
4. What detail in "The Devil's Due" are you really proud of?
5. What do you wish someone would ask you about "The Devil's Due"? Answer it now!
6. What’s one fact about the universe of "The Devil's Due" that you didn’t get a chance to mention in the fic itself?
I'm sorry for being this obssessed :/
No need to apologise! I'm glad my writing can make you this excited! 💜
4. What detail in "The Devil's Due" are you really proud of?
I think the tension and power balance? Specifically the one that comes from seeing Yo Han from Ga On's POV in this setting, when he's a defendant rather than a young judge sent to spy on him. It shifts the power balance and while that is a delicate thing that can easily be abused, I had a lot of fun portraying it in this first chapter. And it'll even out in the rest of the story which, in turn, will give me new opportunities and situations to play around with.
Because, well, Yo Han will be older, sure, and therefore someone Ga On should respect according to the rules of Korean society. He'll also have helped Ga On avoid getting a record, which means that Ga On is indebted to him, but he won't be Ga On's boss. So, when they meet again later, Yo Han will actually have less power over Ga On in that regard. Ga On can do whatever the fuck he wants and he'll be called disrespectful, sure, but there are fewer stakes. And this will give Ga On more room to be reckless and blunt which, in case you haven't noticed, is something I love (as does Yo Han, tbh).
One detail I didn't like, however — and is something I'll probably go back and change once I continue working on the story — is Ga On's vocabulary in this first chapter. He's supposed to be a teenager so I should probably go back and simplify it a little. But that's for later.
5. What do you wish someone would ask you about "The Devil's Due"? Answer it now!
I wish someone would ask me about the research I did because, oh man, was that a ride.
Basically, I wanted to figure out just how long it takes to become a judge in South Korea, partly because the rest of the fic will take place during the time Ga On is studying to do just that and I needed to get my timeline straight. But also because I wanted to maybe figure out when Yo Han might have become one in canon. Like, was he a judge before Isaac died? Or was that a career path he chose specifically to get revenge? (which I still haven't found an answer to, by the way, but it was worth a try)
In The Devil's Due, I clearly went with the former, with him being one even before Isaac died. Perhaps Yo Han thought it would make Isaac proud if he worked in the law field? Or maybe it was a fuck you to his father? Who knows?
ANYWAY. The point is that, during this research, I realised that canon gives fewer shits about this than I do x'D The drama is inaccurate in its depiction of how long it takes to become a judge. Ga On cannot possibly have become one at his age with the system South Korea currently uses unless he started practising law at 19 and completely skipped military service (which I'm going to assume he didn't).
Instead, they seem to be using the old system that was revised back in 2008. Which honestly isn't a big deal because they can just say that this is a dystopian, fictional version of South Korea so maybe that's just one of the things that never happened and helped bring about the society they now live in? Because, let me tell you, they must have gotten quite a lot of questionable judges with that old system (the education was, uh, worryingly short).
The real reason, however, I think is as simple as Moon Yoo Seok deciding to go with the system that (based on his age) was used when he became a judge. Either because of that whole "write what you know" thing or simply because it made the story more exciting. Because, honestly, it wouldn't have been as fun if Ga On wasn't the young and idealistic man that he is in canon. With the new system, he'd have to have practised law for at least 10 years before ever ending up on the Live Court Show. Which would definitely not have created as fun of a dynamic between him and Yo Han. Like, Ga On wouldn't even be a sugar baby twink at that point, would he? And we definitely can't have that!
Anyway, in The Devil's Due, I'll honour the canon and just go with whatever the hell I want. Probably a combination of the old and new system, where you at least have to become a lawyer first (which, uh, didn't seem to be a requirement with the old system?) and THEN become a judge. But I'll remove the "has to have worked as a lawyer for at least 10 years" part.
So yeah. The more you know? xD
6. What’s one fact about the universe of "The Devil's Due" that you didn’t get a chance to mention in the fic itself?
I honestly mentioned the majority of them in my short notes on the actual post and the rest will (hopefully) become apparent as the story continues. But I think one thing I'd like to emphasise is the fact that their first meeting is the ONLY thing I'll knowingly change from canon.
That's not to say that other things won't be different — because they sure as hell will be — but I'll try to keep my intentional influence limited to that one detail. And then see just how much that will change the characters' choices going forward and, consequentially, their lives and the unfolding story.
So, for example, Komi unfortunately won't be in this fic since she seems to have been a relatively new addition once the drama starts. Jin Joo also won't appear, as sad as that makes me, because I don't think there will be a chance for them to run into each other. But Ga On has his gay/sub/sugar baby awakening a LOT sooner because he just happened to come across a suitable sugar daddy (which I assume he didn't in canon) and, because of that, figures out his feelings for Soo Hyun long before he meets Yo Han again, years later.
Basically, what I want to explore with this fic is how that one meeting will change everything that happens between Yo Han and Ga On. And the hilarious part is that Ga On is going to be responsible for the majority of those changes. He is the one who will seek Yo Han out. He is the one who'll get a little bit obsessed. He is the one who won't be able to let Yo Han go.
And that alone is such a fun change that I can't wait to explore it. Let's watch Ga On be the instigator and pursuer for once! (though, obviously, Yo Han is still the one mostly in charge because, well, Yo Han x'D)

Exactly how to cosplay star battles Ahsoka Tano with the right cosplay costumes
Cosplay Ahsoka Tano if you wish to play an one-of-a-kind and powerful personality from the Celebrity Wars franchise business. She appeared as the Padwan pupil of Anakin Skywalker. Fans appreciated her efficiency in 2008's Stars Battles: The Clone Wars animated movie. She also appeared in the TELEVISION series, where numerous fans appreciated this personality.
Ahsoka has belonged of several Celebrity Wars TV shows and also flicks. Her special look makes it an interesting personality to cosplay. Naturally, you need correct prep work and good understanding of this character to portray it faultlessly.
Why cosplay Ahsoka Tano?
Ahsoka is a Togruta female. She was a Padwan student under her master Anakin Skywalker. Ahsoka looked like headstrong trainee and later on as an effective leader.
However, her journey was rather various than other Jedis and that's why it became a remarkable personality in the whole franchise.
Ahsoka got "Snips" nickname from her master Anakin as a result of her amusing retorts. Anakin was a powerful Jedi knight and also Ahsoka was an innovative apprentice. He appreciated her when she damaged a Separatist shield generator to conserve her master's life.
Ahsoka is just one of the leading characters in the Clon Wars films. She underwent numerous heartbreaks, triumphs, ups and also downs, however she fought like a take on warrior together with Duplicate Captain Rex. No character ends up being interesting without specific imperfections. Ahsoka is additionally not immune to important errors. Most of her boxers lost since she rejected to retreat in the Duplicate Wars. That's when Ahsoka learnt more about obligation and also why she need to comply with orders.
Ahsoka's trip is way more interesting than several other Celebrity Wars characters. That's why fans still remember her and also they will certainly give you a substantial round of praise if you perfectly cosplay her personality on the stage!
Ahsoka Tano Costume:
Ahsoka was presented as a crucial protagonist in the Clone Wars film. Her look appears motivated by Princess Mononoke's San. Her opening night in a tube-top-and-miniskirt costume was quite interesting. Nonetheless, it did not last for a very long time. She got a brand-new costume in the 3rd season along with other personalities in the franchise business.
Ahsoka has actually obtained a new lightsaber throughout the third period. Her armor in Rebels seems motivated from the look of Psudo-Samurai. She looks even more like a samurai woman than a celebrity wars fighter. The designers chose this armor due to the fact that it was suggested to look like discovered in an old Jedi holy place. Ahsoka lightsaber has colorless blades, which indicates she is neither a Sith neither a Jedi. Her face markings additionally expose a whole lot about the personality. These markings transformed as she aged.
Ahsoka's costumes altered a little bit in The Duplicate Wars, The Surge of Skywalker, and The Duplicate Battles TELEVISION collection. Have a look at her character in all these motion pictures and shows to decide which costume you intend to cosplay. As you can picture, it will certainly be quite tiring and also lengthy job to develop various parts of her costume in addition to that remarkable and also challenging headpiece. Therefore, you should pick to use Ahsoka Tano readymade costume.
There are a number of renowned costume selling systems. You can ensure modifications to the costume to make it look more eye-catching and one-of-a-kind during the occasion. Ahsuka's costume includes the following:
Montrols as well as Lekku. A black leather coat. A leather belt. Arm tech as well as handwear covers. Leg guards. Arm bands. Sleeveless beige top. cosplay outfits . Brownish boots.
Inspect a couple of photos of Ahsoka Tano to obtain more clearness about the colors used in her costume. Do not forget to get skin-friendly face paint because there are special markings on Ahsoka's face. Get every little thing arranged and also watch Duplicate Wars to discover how Ahsoka walks, talks, and a few other qualities of her personality. Hence, it will certainly be much easier to look like Ahsoka on the stage!

Hii! I was wondering if your opinion on MK’s rep has changed at all? I was reading some posts from 616sys on Instagram and the rep was mostly assessed as bad on there, but I noticed your posts are for the most part positive? You don’t have to answer this but ty if you do!
Hi!
(edit: this reply does not reflect thoughts beyond episode 4)
thank you for asking as isaac is deeply into moon knight and has had a lot of discussions with me about the representation for us. Isaac is an alter that has been in the system for roughly 3 years, he experienced a lot of it under the surface (not fronting) and because of that, has very strong opinions and emotions revolving around the disorder. He is also a student of science, so he cares a lot about access to education on it for those who don’t know. He says it’s a positive representation because of how much he can relate to it. Because 616sys does not relate, the show is poor representation to them. That’s okay and valid.
Initially when went to that instagram and read a few things  I was deeply disappointed by the way they had dictated what a system can and cannot do. After sitting with it, I believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinions on systems even if it’s not one I can stand by. So take that in mind, I worried my tone may sound negative but I am never wishing any hate on that system.
I have 10 years+ of lived experience, I have had and known alters that have had entirely separate lives much like Steven. They go by an entirely different name at work, they are in the computer systems by that name. It is possible, especially when a business is family-owned/not corporate. But why would that happen? Why would an alter go and live out their own life, leave a spouse, and exist without the rest of the system?
A: Dissociative amnesia. To exist because of its subset known as dissociative fugue, well I know what it is like to be that said alter
My incredibly lazy explanation; setting up an entirely new identity after moving due to memory loss/moving because you don’t remember, you just go with the flow of things. This was not a choice, and while watching Moon Knight I wasn’t sure if this was what Marc chose to do for Steven. I’d love to hear what poeple think on that, because I cannot ask my dormant old host if they chose to abandon the system and their friends and family or not.
As I suddenly adjusted to the life around me I made major changes that were out of character for those who knew the old host. I moved twice, I lived in the city across the state and set up in college, and did not have any attachments to the identity I was given. I couldn’t understand what was wrong with me, why I couldn’t just do what I wanted to do!
dealt with it the best I could until I started missing classes, withdrawing from my anti-depressants, and began acting out against everyone who knew the old host. Who was I  supposed to be??  I began resisting and pushing the barrier between me and the other members. As soon as that happened I had major losses of time. It took me several years to piece together what had happened. My sense of identity was gone. This compares well with how Steven began to notice things not making sense around him and to correct this behavior Marc urged him to give up the body (out of protection).
Yes, it’s unrealistic how quickly Steven adjusted, but we don’t know if Steven ever knew of being an alter before this, because it’s entirely possible that he did. we haven’t read the comics, so i don’t know what direction they went with that, or what MCU actually is insinuating, but i cannot judge how they’re portraying system acceptance in someone w/ DID, Steven could’ve known all about the system and those memories could’ve been moved or hidden due to trauma surrounding them. Same thing as what Marc knows.
Theo, who has been around with the old host, had to fix my mistakes when I wasn’t aligning with the body like how the old host did. He had to try to keep us alive, regardless of our consent in how he goes about doing that. But none of them can control amnesia. Too unpredictable. I’ve had times when I woke up in the body's parents' home, terrified, asking where I was, unable to recall who they were, and wanted to leave as soon as I could. Had I not had other alters to switch, I would’ve been in a much more dangerous situation. This would happen, and then I’d remember far more than I should, horrific events, and then the cycle would repeat. (Yes, I’ve had testing for early dementia. The testing wasn’t the same as what is done for DID.)
How well could you represent an extremely complex disorder through storytelling, within a fictional universe, where nearly everything is possible. If they made it entirely accurate, would you still have interest? Would you still want to know more about it? Because my guess is that you may be very bored.
The show was made for entertainment, it will have clichés and it will have some accuracies that a lot of people with DID can relate to. It does the job of showing what DID could be in a fictional setting. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to learn and critique it. I love to read others' perspectives on the show. Having a directly negative reaction to this show is valid, but misinformation about DID can be harmful to people who have had symptoms that occurred in the show, as concerns can be explored and discussed with professionals. I do not know a lot about OSDD systems, like 0 knowledge truly. I only know what we have, what we experienced, and what we have learned along the way. Since living as a system, and this is also what MK has lived as, I can feel a closer connection to it than I would with anything else.
Overall, I do believe it's fairly positive because I find it fun to watch, it makes me feel good as a system member, it makes my system members feel good, and I get a kick out of listening to isaac have a fat crush on Steven Grant.
I just love seeing my system members happy, and if something makes them happy, why try to ruin it?
It took me so long to come around to write this, it will be a hot mess because we’ve had a rough week. oof. but TYSM for asking ;_;

hey maca :)) I have sth that I’d love to hear your input on! (wall of text incoming so beware- I’m absolutely not mad if you don’t want to answer lmao). Basically it’s about how you portray women in your works and to what extent you see that portrayal mirrored in the canon books. I have noticed that a lot of writers tend to go a traditional route with for example daughters not being heirs like you also mentioned in an answer for a wtsioa ask on here. Considering the cultures Vere and Akielos are based on that’s obviously very logical and a lot of authors (including you) make it work fantastically! Yet personally I never got the vibe of Vere and Akielos being as patriarchal in canon, mostly because the Information we get is kind of confusing. On one hand damen is a walking manosphere (and. all of Akielos in general as well) without any prominent female figures in his life but on the other hand damen only ever speaks appreciatively of for example the female vaskian warriors. Both countries seem to ban women from the army yet Damen also refers to a warrior queen. The regent is a total misogynist but with the wording Laurent uses it almost seems like that is more the exception and not the general rule of veretian court life. Both countries also have ties to Vask, an exclusive matriarchy and Akielos is said to be similar to Patras which Pacat has stated is also partly a strong matriarchy due to vaskian occupations in the past. I could go on for a lot longer but I guess that damens overall positive attitude towards women and especially stereotypically spoken masculine women is what sticks out the most to me. It just seems kind of misplaced in a world that supposedly is as sexist as the original cultures from our world. Which is why I’d say both countries do have gender roles but are overall a lot more egalitarian than their respective real world og cultures. But that’s only my take and I’d love to hear more on what others think about the portrayal of women in canon and how they chose to portray it in fanfiction. Love you and your new work, hope you’re doing well❤️
HELLO!!! Thank you for asking me interesting stuff :, ) you always have the best questions and my sad little inbox is open to you any time, friend. I divided this into parts, so:
My portrayal of women: I need to work on this a lot lmao. I’m not proud of any female character I have ever written for this fandom, and I’m also not proud to say I struggle horribly when it comes to writing female OCs, especially if the story is not about a female character that is a literal projection of me. Or Bella Swan (yes, Twilight literally shaped my sad little brain and the way I write and consume fiction).
Authors writing female characters in a “traditional” way (for fantasy settings): I can’t speak for other authors but I definitely think, in my case, that using the “it’s a patriarchal society, women have no rights, women can’t be heirs, etc.” blueprint is a matter of being lazy. It’s quick, and easy, and it’s been done before so we all know how it works and a) it’s unlikely that you’ll mess it up (in the plot hole kind of way) and b) it’s obvious that most readers know how the usual system works and so you don’t have to spend paragraphs or even chapters explaining it to them. I am very lazy when it comes to world-building for fics. Why? Because when I’m writing fanfiction I don’t give two shits about the world, I just care about the characters doing Things and having Feelings. The moment you start to question these issues (a society where women can join the army, where they can be heirs, where maybe they can have multiple husbands, etc.) a billion issues arise because it’s not the “usual way” and so you’ll have to deal with “unusual problems”. See: plot holes, info-dumping, etc.
Vere and Akielos in canon: I think the books get very, very confusing at times when it comes to gender roles in that specific world. They also get very confusing about how royalty works, in my opinion. So:
Damen never mentions female influences in his life, not even nannies or wetnurses or anything. He mentions past queens and his mother, but even then… It’s always struck me as “what the actual fuck” that we get no information on Egeria. In TSP, he doesn’t even read as curious to me, especially when I think of that line that goes something like “oh, well, he’d never asked how tall she was”.
Then you have Jokaste, who is highborn and also… perhaps trained in politics? It’s unclear to me if she’s ever been directly involved in meetings or been an active member of the Council or even been allowed to study these issues. Clearly, she’s smart and capable and cunning, but like… how? Did she have private tutors? Is she a self-made woman? Like, what’s up with that? Are women allowed to engage in public politics? Are they allowed to be kyroi?
IMO, Damen complimenting the female warriors in Vask has to do with how appreciative he is of war-related stuff. Like, he thinks people with his own qualities are neat. We see this time and time again in the books—having honor, being brave, respecting one’s family, protecting those who need protecting… He compliments these things when he sees them in others, especially in Laurent. Obviously one of the big changes in Damen as a character is that he goes from being daddy’s boy to being like “well, actually… maybe war isn’t always the answer, and maybe war isn’t always honorable”. The Vaskian warriors prove themselves worthy of praise in a “manly” way, if that makes sense. (In the same way, Laurent proves himself in the Okton, not so much to Damen but to other Akielons). So, in essence, War > Any issues he may have about women doing Stuff.
Don’t judge me for this but I can’t remember the Regent talking about women. Do you have any quotes about that? I feel like Book 1 is super rich when it comes to world-building stuff and yet it’s the book I remember the least. I know he obviously has a preference for boys and not girls, but I don’t recall him having interactions with Vannes or ladies at court? I’M SORRY I’M SO STUPID but I don’t own the book so I can’t exactly word search my way out of this one, and so instead of saying stupid stuff, I’m asking anyone reading this (lol, you and my mom probably) to please tell me what canon says on this issue.
Ties to Vask: Er, yeah, I mean… They’re clearly not at war with Vask and have some sort of economic deal (there are Vaskian pets in Arles? Which makes me wonder if they, like, buy them from Vask? Or if the pets are Vaskian and turn into pets in Vere? Slaves are not like pets so I don’t know?), BUT just because they have deals with this kingdom/are on good terms with the ruler does not mean they necessarily approve? Like, maybe they’re like “yeah, it’s weird they give women so much power, but also I need that silk/leather/WHATEVER, so I’ll shut up about that”.
“Akielos is said to be similar to Patras which Pacat has stated is also partly a strong matriarchy due to Vaskian occupations in the past.” Is this in the books or is this something she said in an interview/post-releasing the trilogy? I know in the books there’s a quote that Akielos and Patras are similar because they both have slaves, but other than that I can’t quite remember anything about Patras? Like, I don’t recall Pacat giving us extensive and thorough world-building on either nation, at all. Once again, I am asking you for more explanations on this because I literally don’t remember.
4. My opinion and a Stupidity Disclaimer: As I’ve said above, there’s a lot of stuff I don’t remember and so I’m not trying to preach to anyone reading this or even saying that I hold the truth about… anything. I’m answering questions as I see fit and asking more questions when I run out of answers.
I believe world-building is not one of Captive Prince’s strong points. I will not elaborate on this because this is already long enough but there is simply, in my opinion, not enough material to reach any solid conclusions when it comes to world-building questions such as the role of women in Vere and Akielos, how compulsory homosexuality affects the development of highborn men and women in Vere, exactly what makes Akielos’ view on women different from Vere’s (if there’s any difference at all), the history of gender roles in this world and how it’s evolved up until canon, how Lamen can solve the heir issue without recurring to, once again, “the usual stuff” (concubines, bastards, marriage to women, etc.). It’s clear from what I’ve read that Pacat has come a long way as a writer and that her new trilogy has a lot more in-depth explanations to world-building questions, but this is not the case with CP, and so I’m afraid my answer to most of this is “I don’t know, and I don’t think anyone can know for sure”.
Lastly, I think I struggle a lot with understanding the role of women in this universe because I simply did not see enough women doing stuff, so I don’t know what’s permitted, what’s unacceptable, what’s illegal, what is straight-up execution worthy, etc. This is not me complaining about the lack of female characters in CP, at all, which I know is contradictory to stuff I’ve said in the past (I answered a couple asks a year ago about how I’d wished we’d gotten Vannes’ POV or Jokaste’s POV in the short stories). I’ve changed my mind, and so I think Pacat is entitled to write whatever she wants, just like I’m entitled to talk shit about KR with any living soul who will listen lmao.
To end this on a spicy note, I think sometimes we consume the wrong media and then complain because it doesn’t have what we wanted. If you’re looking for a trilogy with strong, fleshed-out female characters, Captive Prince is not for you. If you’re looking for a trilogy on female struggles and, I don’t know, defying… the male gaze… Captive Prince is not for you. There are plenty of books out there that focus exclusively on female characters, featuring sapphic relationships, and dealing with gender issues. WHICH IS NOT TO SAY WE SHOULDN’T BE HAVING THESE DISCUSSIONS. This is not about this particular question, but more about a lot of posts I’ve seen floating around… complaining about Pacat’s writing and the themes she didn’t explore.
If anyone has made it this far, thank you for reading, and know this is NOT me telling you what to think. This post is an open question that anyone can engage with, although I hope people will engage with this directly and on this platform, instead of… taking it somewhere else where I sadly can’t engage back! Unlike what happened with our awesome fat Laurent discussion, I will be replying to any questions I get on this (Note: I did not reply to most of those questions because a long time had passed and they were sort of repetitive).

A very overdue cql/mdzs fic rec list
for @accidental-child
I am so sorry this took me so long Axel! The pandemic has really done a number on my time-management skills and things like this often fall behind :/
The fics complied here are the ones i have not recced in the list for @helianthus21 before. You can find that one here, so you can check it out as well :)
Tumblr media
The Wei Wuxian makes a wish series by natcat5
My attempt at a summary: this is a madoka magica AU (which i had not watched prior to reading this fic). Cultivators, in this universe, are created when a teenager makes a wish to the creature named Kyubey, which than grants them their wish and the power to fight witches, strange and destructive creatures of despair that lure people into their labyrinths. Wei Wuxian, at the beginning of the story is not a cultivator, but his friends are and so is the mysterious new student at his school, lan wangji, who follows him everywhere and seems to be obsessed with preventing him from making a contract.
My comment: my attempt at a summary does not do this story justice and is really just a setup. Honestly i cannot put into words how much I loved this story. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. It made me laugh, it made me cry for entire chapters, it drew me into it's world so much that I freaking dreamed about it! (I'm not kidding, I really did) Honestly, this fic deserves so much more attention than it is currently getting. Not only is the plot expertly crafted, with reveals that shock you and leave you reading, but the author also just gets the characters. The best thing an AU can do, in my opinion, is take familiar characters, put them in unfamiliar situations and then manage to make the way they react believable. And this AU nails that! The conclusion and the choices that Wei wuxian and lan Wangji make in the end felt exactly right. Not to mention, it has a stellar ensemble cast! Everyone is here (except Xichen sadly and I kind of think it is deliberate because without him, Lan Wangji lacks a support system). Again, I cannot recommend this story enough. It is, without doubt, my favourite fic series in this entire fandom. (Caution however: Do read the warnings in the tags and notes and take them seriously. They are there for a very good reason.)
Agapé (home is in your arms) by estel_willow
Author’s summary: Lan Xichen is in isolation. Wei Wuxian visits him. Together they find their way back to happiness, to clarity and to home.
My comment: This one focuses on both Lan Xichen’s and Wei Wuxian’s issues and lets them resolve them together. I am such a fan of their characterisations in this fic, as well as Lan Wangji’s even though he is not the focus. I love it when non-romantic relationships are the focus of fics and especially when they are central to the character’s resolving their own issues and moving forward in life and that is exactly what happens here.
until you're big enough by lostin_space
Author’s summary: Lan Zhan is sad and not hungry; Lan Xichen asks Nie Mingjue to help him.
My comment: This one is a really short and sweet read about how Lan Xichen and Nie Mingjue parent the their younger brothers. I just really liked how the author portrayed todler Lan Zhan, as well as these two teenagers doing their best to be the parents that both he and Nie huaisang lack.
Night Music by Manogahela
Author’s summary: There is a music that plays in the night at Cloud Recess....but there isn't suppose to be. Lan Xichen investigates the mysterious dizi music that can be heard from the Jingshi at night following the Siege of the Burial mounds.
My comment: I absolutely adored this one, mainly for two reasons: 1. I love an outsider perspective and Lan Xichen’s, at this point and with his limited knowledge is absolutely wonderful. First, he isn’t even sure is what he thinks is happening really is happening and when he is sure, his feelings are, understandably very conflicted. 2. The author’s style compliments this fic so well. Since most of it happens at night and Xichen isn’t entirely sure that he can trust his senses, there is a certain dreamlike quality to it that the author writes beautifully. This fic is part one in a series. Part two is a WIP, but also very much worth the read!
Company by WithBroomBefore
My summary: In which Wei Wuxian is whipped within an inch of his life by Madam Yu when he is fourteen and comes to stay at the cloud recesses. He and Lan Zhan become friends.
My comment: My summary once again does not do this fic justice. Because it is so much more than just that. It’s such a beautful exploration of friendship and love and bodily autonomy. Wei Wuxian has a lot to work through in this fic, but really, so has Lan Zhan who has the opportunity to make friends at a much more mellow pace than in the novel/show and panics a little less because of it. The war still happens but has much less dire consequences. All in all, this fic left me with a wonderful warm feeling in my chest.
you are safe / loved / worthy / enough by everythingispoetry
Author’s summary: One of the more timid-looking posts, in pale greens and creams and yellows, says Hello, I'm managing to be fairly high functioning right now but I'm really not doing as well as it may appear, and Lan Zhan feels as if someone sneaked into his mind and read his most secret thoughts, the ones he's never even dared to admit to himself.
(In which Lan Zhan, to his own dismay, finds himself with the help of the most obnoxious, cheerful, cheesy self-care instagram account known to men.)
(And Wei Ying.)
My comment: Listen, I have a complicated relationship with fics that depict mental health struggles in characters. They are all so incredibly valid and I’m glad they exist (every single one of them, no matter if i like them or not) but due to the fact that they tend to come from the author projecting their own issues onto characters (which is NOT a bad thing! that is what fanfic is for!) they are often hit-and-miss when it comes to characterisation. But this story ... it just GETS Lan Wangji. If someone told me a scenario in a modern AU that leads to him developing an anxiety disorder and depression, this is what I would have come up with. Because let’s be real, Lan Wangji is a perfectionist to boot, insanely competitive and needs to live up to his family’s expectations, while also not having much of an emotional support system outside of his brother and uncle. That’s a dangerous cocktail in the modern world and just screams of a burnout waiting to happen. So Lan Wangji, off to university, living alone in a strange city for the frst time, spends all his time in a carefully calculated study routine but slowly realises that the path he set out on was not one he chose because he liked it but simply the one that was laid out for him by his background and family, which then leads to him questioning the reason behind what he does. That reads as incredibly real to me. A good AU, in my opinion, takes the characters and their inherent characteristics and lets them meet new and unique challenges that they never would have encountered in canon, which then leads to new and interesting character developement. And this AU manages that perfectly! (Plus, if you are a university student like me who sometimes suffers from crushing anxiety about the path they chose in life, this is insanely relatable. What? I never said I wasn’t biased :P)
porn (but not actually) and waiting (a lot of it) by hyacinth4maria
Author’s summary: Lan Xichen sighs as he settles into the couch next to Lan Wangji.
"What are you looking at?"
Lan Wangji, without pausing from typing the names Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian in the Love Calculator 3000, says, "Porn."
Lan Xichen chokes.
- Lan Wangji has a crush. Lan Xichen hadn't realized his little brother was growing up.
My comment: this one was hilarious! Just Lan Xichen being both absolutely exasperated and amused by wangxian’s pre-teen drama. I almost choked laughing at the line that coined the title. The author has these characters down to a T and they used their powers to attack my laugh-musccles :D
the field meets the wood by astronicht
Author’s summary: Wei Wuxian is a dark shadow in the barley. Wei Wuxian is sorry for the kind of compassion that he is about to hand out.
(in which Lan Wangji is stolen for salt, and Wei Wuxian unravels the world, a little)
My Comment: HOLY FUCKING SHIT THIS IS SO GOOD. Do you ever read a story and just marvel at the author’s mind? This is one of those. The sheer genius of giving Wei Wuxian the ability to pull entire beings into non-being! The absolute galaxy-brain idea to link the canon mythology to modern astrophysics!!! Wei Wuxian creates a motherfucking black hole in this one!!! And it’s SO well written, too! The author does not shy away from Wei Wuxian’s sharp edges and his darker side but goddamn if he is not still loveable anyway. Just GO READ THIS FIC!
Abandon your post by StarsAlignNomore
Author’s summary: After months as Chief Cultivator and separated from his soulmate, Lan Wangji follows Wei Wuxian out into the world. He searches for him. He finds him. He kisses him. They reunite, they talk, they resolve. Sometimes Bichen lends emotional support. Chenqing bites. Little Apple is there too.
Your typical Post-Canon-Reunion-Fic with much more emphasis on their spiritual weapons than expected.
My comments: This one just left me with a lot of mushy feelings. Also I adore the way the author emphasised the relationship between Lan Wangji and Bichen. And by the end, Wangxian finally figure shit out through actual open communication. Absolutely beautiful!

Hanyo no Yashahime
Season 1 Review
It’s review time
Hanyo no Yashahime is the sequel to the classic anime InuYasha, in which a teen from present day travels back to Feudal Japan where demons and magic are very much a reality. The sequel follows the children of the main characters from InuYasha and puts them on their own adventure to save the world.
Note: All opinions are my own. This is a critical review of entertainment media, and will include criticism. If you do not agree, then simply ignore.
The Plot
Early on, it was established that Towa and company would seek out the dream butterfly and get back Setsuna’s dreams/sleep. Treekyo told them they would have to defeat Sesshomaru and Kirinmaru. After many episodes, this plot line was unimportant and almost discarded. Passing and fleeting, the true motive of the girls quest is sporadic and mentioned sparingly, and for many episodes it seemed they were only there to slay high level demons.
Mysteries and questions were extremely abundant and established early on, and as the episodes went by, it was clear they wouldn’t be answered. At least this season. One thing the fandom has noticed is how many questions there are, and how in some crazy way sunrise managed to withhold all answers and key plot points from the plot for so long. Treekyo? Not that important apparently. Her prophecy? Never mentioned again. The dream butterfly? Seen not explained. It’s connection to Kirinmaru and Zero? Contradicted in the show. InuYasha and Kagome? Just as forgotten as Moroha when there is a fight.
The pacing of this show was all over the place and inconsistent, providing too much focus on filler in some episodes and not enough plot in others. And in the episodes where we got to come back to the main story, we would get info dumps. I mentioned in my mid-season review how info dumps are cheap in the scheme of writing and plot outline, and I’ll say it again because I was surprised as the episodes went on how inconsistent everything was getting.
Now, don’t get me wrong, InuYasha had lots of fillers too, but unlike Yashahime, they established a lot of exposition and plot within the first 12 episodes; we got the main characters and their ambitions/conflicts, the main villain, the dual antagonist (Sesshomaru, at least he was a villain for a bit anyway) and the basics of the magic system was established and explained. Yashahime did set up the character’s goals, but the character’s quickly seemed to forget them, while in InuYasha their goal of finding the jewel shards was always at the forefront of the majority of the episodes. The main villain was supposedly Kirinmaru (his careless attitude throughout most of the show did not provide the antagonistic “high stakes”) and he sent demons to battle the girls, but the girls were so overpowered and perfected their powers so quickly that the demons provided no real challenge or added any stakes or drama.
The ability/powers of characters were retconned. This was odd and not something I expected. One of the most notable examples is how certain abilities are apparently genetic and inherited through dna instead of through the swords that harbored them like the original series established. An example is Moroha’s “Crimson Backlash Wave” where it mimics the ability Tessaiga has where it sends an opponent’s own demonic attack right back at them, destroying them with their own demonic energy. Moroha does not use Tessaiga, she uses Kurikaramaru. The backlash wave was said to be unique to Tessaiga, and only able to be used with Tessaiga, but that lore was weirdly chosen to be retconned. It is unclear wether or not this will be expanded upon in season 2.
In episode 19 of Yashahime, there was blatant homophobia and transphobia. No excuse, there was. InuYasha also had homophobic and transphobic characters. Yashahime could have changed that, but it perpetuated that instead, and it was extremely disappointing. In episode 20, Shiori, a beloved character from the original series, is shown changing into her human form during a solar eclipse. Yashahime chose to whitewash the character by lightening her dark skin. In InuYasha, several characters had darker skin, like InuYasha himself, and when he turned into his human form, his skin would stay the same. There is no excuse for this. Both of these episodes blighted Yashahime’s potential to step away from those things, but it continued to do it instead.
The final episode of the show was fast and full of unanswered questions. The dream butterfly was still not explained, Rin did not wake up, InuYasha and Kagome were not even mentioned, let alone released, and Kirinmaru parented Towa and Setsuna better than their own father. Zero flees, using spider silk (she strangely has many parallels with Naraku, even down to spider imagery) and sets herself up to be the main villain. And Setsuna dies, and Sesshomaru doesn’t seem that worried at all. It was interesting however to see Kirinmaru fight the girls, and he basically began teaching them about their moves and powers. Another interesting aspect was how Sesshomaru is apparently, potentially, time traveling. He shows up and hands Towa the Tensiaga, and the rain stops, and when she takes it, the rain starts again. Towa looks up and it is shown Sesshomaru has vanished instantaneously.
The Characters
Towa Higurashi: In the first two episodes, Towa was portrayed as a tomboy who kicked ass and cared for her family. She was confident and had ambition. Once she came to the feudal era however, her entire personality changed. Her surroundings and the people/beings she met were indeed something she had never encountered, but she suddenly became a moralist, and cautioned Setsuna and Moroha to never fight, despite she herself being notorious in modern day for fighting bullies and bad people. It is almost like her fighting persona in modern day had never happened. Overall, it felt her character was overly gullible, and though she meant well, her sudden drop from “school fighter” to “naive moralist” was odd and seemed to contradict the character they set up in the first three episodes.
Setsuna: Like father like daughter, Setsuna retains her father’s most iconic personality traits, and is focused on her ambitions and remains cautious around people and demons alike. She was, perhaps, the one out of the three princesses to have the most backstory and character focus (despite Towa being the main character) The mystery of her connection with the dream butterfly was genuinely interesting, though it did feel like it dragged on for too long in certain aspects (some lore even felt contradicted) Writing wise, Setsuna felt the most consistently written character of the three girls, both in personality and in development.
Moroha: The perfect mix of her parents, Moroha has had little to few familial relationships and friendships in her life. Her goal of earning money seemed petty at first, but when Moroha finally got her own episode, it was revealed to have a deeper meaning. That episode highlighted Moroha’s strength and perseverance. What was a poor move on behalf of Yashahime’s writers was the strange choice to constantly omit Moroha from vital fights (and even basic fights) It happened pretty much every time, and Moroha was never around for key information about her parents or their quest. It is unclear why her being there for the information would be a bad thing. Her relationship with Towa and Setsuna was shallow, and their bonding had no real emotional impact. In fact, Towa and Setsuna openly mention how they need her for her abilities, not because they like her. The one episode they tried to make them bond fell flat due to the lack of build up and relationship development.
Conclusion
Hanyo no Yashahime was inconsistent and fell flat with several character relationships and motivations. Plot point execution was sporadic and lacked emotional depth and coherent understanding, leaving viewers more confused than awed. Characters from InuYasha were out of character and felt hollow; some of them were not even involved as much as one would think and one didn’t even show up. Kirinmaru is perhaps the most interesting new character to come out of the series, and his respect for the Great Dog Demon has led him to enter a deal with Sesshomaru, and even protect the three princesses. This contradicts several actions he took, and makes a compelling mystery in certain aspects. In conclusion, the show felt rushed and lacked emotional and character depth, and presented several problematic and harmful themes.
Note: Again, all opinions are my own. You are free to comment, but please be respectful.

What if there was a Walt Disney Fighting Game? [Video Game Concept]
Note: I am well aware, that Disney would probably never say yes in a million years to this idea. Taking their beloved, child friendly characters and having them fight?!
OH THE HORROR?!
I am also aware there have been concepts for this in the past.
Final Fantasy Dissidia was supposed to be a Kingdom Hearts fighting game, but Nomura felt uncomfortable portraying Disney characters in such a violent atmosphere.
And there are sketches of what a Walt Disney fighting game could've been, inspired by Super Smash Bros, before it was canceled. It would've focused on more violent characters such as Gaston, Beast, Ursula, Captain Hook, Captain Silver and the Horned King. But the idea was dropped.
Here's the link.
This entire post is just building and putting together what a Disney fighting game would look like to me, if one came out in today's world. It's all merely speculation and ideas that's been in the back of my head for awhile.
(Special thanks to @mayflower-gal for helping me set this up. 😁)
Anyways, let's get started!
Part 1: The Plot
For the plot, I believe it would have to be something simple, since this an idea for a first game. It's the start of a potentially huge franchise, so I wanna keep it not only simple, but an aspect that helps kick off the potential series. And pull in many fans, old and new of Disney.
Let's take into account one thing: what's a recurring theme across various Disney movies (and overall media)?
Is it the lovable, comic relief sidekick that makes audiences laugh? Is it the songs that kids find themselves singing, long after the tale is done and the curtain has closed? Is it perhaps, the clever celebrity choices for important side characters?
No, It's the one defining aspect that draws in audiences, both new and old, bringing you to fall in love with the characters as the story is told:
Wishes.
Pinocchio wishes to be a real boy. Beast and all his servants wish to be human again. Tiana wishes to have her own restaurant. Ariel wishes to see the world beyond the sea.
Everyone wishes for something more in their life and have dreams that they wish come true.
What if all those wishes were counted? Collected?
Watched over. Much like a parent to their children. Or a teacher to their students.
Found engaging. Found entertaining. Found comforting. Found peaceful. Found introspective.
Looked at with childlike wonder and glee when accomplished.
But frowned on when those wish for selfish desires. And an even deeper disappointment at those very same inhuman desires, coming true.
Good and bad exists inside every person, it's just a matter of what one chooses to act on and stand by at the end of the day.
What someone wishes for is reflective of that.
Now imagine that same being coming to life and wrecking havoc across the Disney universe. Judging for themself, if any of these colorful, imaginative characters, truly deserve their...
Happily,
Ever
After.
Yep, the main plot of the story mode is all the various Disney characters literally fighting for wishes and dreams to come true...
against the LITERAL embodiment of wishing upon a star.
Each playable character having their own unique ending.
Some endings being repeats of your favorite Disney movies, with some minor changes to acknowledge the game's plot. While others are original due to the wide cast of characters that are available, besides your favorite Disney Heroes.
For example, you beat the story mode as say, Pinocchio, he wishes to be a real boy.
I know it sounds very redundant since a majority of these things already happen in the Disney movies, but I feel as though relieving them would be fun. In addition to some original ones that didn't happen with either the villains or less major characters.
It's only the hypothetical first game and I wanted start with something simple, that fans could easily get into. More complex plots, with more character interactions should be saved for any possible sequels.
Part 2: The Gameplay
The game would be your typical 2D fighting game. You have,
Combos exclusive to every character that requires practice.
Playstyles that make each character feel unique.
Special moves for each character to get the upper hand and the main focus in besting your opponent in 1 VS 1 matches.
Of course, there's dialogue before fights in the character intros. With so many to pick from, it had to be put in somewhere.
It resembles 2D fighting games that you've all no doubt heard of, such as Marvel VS Capcom or Street Fighter.
But what would a Disney fighting game have to offer on the table, in order to survive the overall video game market?
It would have to be something unique and a feature that not only gives it originality, but a chance to stand out with so much creativity and innovation. Practically begging fans for more.
Which is why I present to you: Disney Songs.
Or as this game prompt will call them: Musical Finales.
The highlight of many Disney movies and overall media, the music is what leaves a lasting impression on many audiences. Which is not surprising, since Disney is mostly a musical. At least in terms of most of their films.
With so many iconic songs from throughout the company's history, of course I'll be squeezing them somehow!
Each character has a music meter, that can only be filled up with how the player times and follows the beat of the character they play as. Follow the rhythm and beat of a character, and it will fill up quicker. Get cut off by the opponent and it doesn't fill up.
That beat being the music of the stage each player fights on, by attacking to the music and the same time. Think of it like the Sound Battles mechanic in Mother 3.
Every character has four different kinds of attacks: Neutral, Musical, Wonderful and Special.
Neutral Attacks are normal attacks that are mostly used to set up combos.
Musical Attacks are attacks that deal more impact, when timed with the music of the stage.
Wonderful Attacks can be seen as character oriented attacks, that embody the personality and charm of the character you play as. And can be used to entertain the audience. We'll get into that later.
Special Attacks are unique finisher moves that require a separate meter to be filled up, as with most fighting games.
Now what happens when the music meter is full? A Disney Song starts playing of course!
Say you filled up Cinderella's music meter for example, then "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" starts playing, granting some unique abilities for Cinderella.
Each song would grant different outcomes and bonuses for the various characters. They're not Special Attacks, as that's already a separate mechanic already.
For example, "Part of Your World" starts playing if you're playing as Ariel, filling up the stage with water and slowing down the opponent, giving Ariel a chance to either take advantage of that, bump items into them or create big waves of water.
But what happens if BOTH characters trigger the music meter at the same time?!
Well, that's where this gimmick becomes a fight for which song keeps on playing!
Both songs would start playing, both at the same time and volume. Except, both characters have to compete to see which is stronger.
This is done by the two characters fighting, before triggering a rhythm game between the two. Once one is the victor, the other song fades, while the other stays playing. Doubling the duration of that character's Musical Finale.
Another mechanic is the Entertainment Meter. Every level you fight on has one, that determines which fighter the audience likes more. Via Wonderful attacks, you can charm the audience into supporting you more. This activates things like getting healing items or stat boosts in power and speed. Some of your favorite Disney sidekicks even provide aid from the audience!
It's almost like watching a Disney movie live and being able to interact with the story!
Or the battle system in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.
I feel as though this is the best way of keeping the game interesting, giving it an identity of its own and still embodying that magic people will grow to love. It can also lead to some entertaining interactions in the background or foreground of a stage, as the music meter also brings in characters that would not be playable, but support playable characters nonetheless. Like Flounder and Sebastian.
Of course, either feature could be turned off if you're not a fan of that sort of thing, but that's a given.
Part 3: The Stages
With many Disney movies pick from, it's no wonder there's plenty of choices to pick from. Since this is the first game, I chose to focus more on the movies. Here's my take.
Steamboat (Mickey Mouse cartoons)
Duckberg (Ducktales)
Spoonerville (A Goofy Movie)
Dwarven Forest (Snow White and the Seven Dwarves)

The Axiom (WALL-E)
Regent's Park (101 Dalmatians)
New Mushroom Town High School (Onward)
Happily Ever After Castle (Walt Disney Opening)
Part 4: The Roster
The bread and butter of many fighting games, the roster is no doubt one I had a bit of trouble putting together. With so many characters from over the years, it's no surprise. But since this is the outline of a possible first game, here's my interpretation.
Also, the cast is big to avoid being too barren or dull.
And because I had a lot of fun putting it all together.
Mickey Mouse (Mickey Mouse): The all around character of the game, he mostly fights by a series of cartoonish tricks, magic tricks and his paintbrush from Epic Mickey. His Special Attack would have him break the fourth wall like and rewind the fight like an old film projector in reverse. Except he heals, while the opponent receives twice the damage. His Musical Finale "Sorcerer's Apprentice" has him use Yensid's Sorcerer hat to its fullest and give his overall moveset more flashes to distract the opponent and slow them down.
Donald Duck (Donald Duck): Everyone's favorite, greedy mallard and the world's angriest duck. Donald would fight mainly with toon force, his fists, his bad luck and his anger. The more damage he takes, the angrier he gets. His Special Attack would have him don the Duck Avenger persona from his PK days and use a series of superhero gadgets to finish the opponent. His Musical Finale "The Three Caballeros" trades his anger for Jose Carioca and Panchito Pistoles showing up, making him happy. As they hurt the opponent, each time they hit Donald, to keep him happy.
Goofy (Goofy): Everyone's favorite Disney dad, Goofy joins the fight as not the brightest but with the biggest heart. He has toon force to aid him in some unconventional ways. His Special Attack would have him become Super Goof from his older days. His Musical Finale "Eye To Eye" would restore health everytime he dodges an attack, with a dancing flair to it.
Snow White (Snow White and the Seven Dwarves): The first Disney Princess, Snow White makes her debut and she's not alone. The Seven Dwarves direct most of her attacks, such as tossing rocks, mining tools as weapons and even just grabbing the opponent and tossing them. Snow White herself can sing and command woodland animals to tie up opponents or just fight to defend her. Her Special Attack would have the Dwarves try to roll a boulder, only for lightning to strike on the opponent and the boulder as extra damage. Her Musical Finale "Whistle While You Work" will call on a huge number of forest animals, as they tidy up the stage and Snow White, slowly replenishing her health and slowing down the opponent.
Pinocchio (Pinocchio): Don't lie in his presence, as that nose is not only for show. Pinocchio fights mostly by using his nose as a staff, the Blue Fairy bringing other toys to life to aid him and Jiminy Cricket distracting the opponent with music. Pinocchio's Special Attack would have him wish upon a star and turn himself into a real boy, as the opponent is turned into a puppet and loses damage as a result. Pinocchio's Musical Finale "I've Got No Strings" would cover the stage in thin lines used for puppets: if the opponent touches one, their frozen briefly. If a projectile attack hits, the same happens.
Cinderella (Cinderella): The bell of the ball and someone whom never gives up on kindness, Cinderella will use the dance moves she showed off at the ball for her moveset, having a dancing and musical feel to how she plays and flashy dances to win against the the opponent. With her Fairy Godmother using her magic to help her, such as flashes of light. Her Special Attack would have the clock strike midnight and she leaves behind her glass slipper: once the opponent touches it they get weighed down by a giant magic dress. Cinderella's Musical Finale "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo" would have the Fairy Godmother cast a series of spells over the stage, as a new carriage pops up every time Cinderella pulls off a combo. The carriages run over the opponent and can even carry Cinderella to safety.
Peter Pan (Peter Pan): Leader of the Lost Boys and Captain Hook's second biggest pain in the butt, Peter Pan and Tinkerbell are here. Peter Pan has a pocket knife with him and Tinker Bell's pixie dust for aerial attacks. His Special Attack would have him toss a bunch of gold on the opponent, as the rest of the Lost Boys tackles them and beats them up for the treasures. His Musical Finale "You Can Fly" would create a trail of pixie dust behind him, that randomly causes the opponent to either jump too high or too low.
Captain Hook (Peter Pan): Keep all 'ticks' and 'tocks' away from this pirate! Captain Hook has a wide array of hooks to switch between, a flintlock pistol and his sword to win the battle. His Special Attack would have him run away from the Tick-Tock the Crocodile, as said crocodile attacks the opponent instead of Hook. His Musical Finale "A Pirate's Life/Elegant Captain Hook" would call his ship the Jolly Rodger onto the stage, as the pirates on the ship occasionally throw knives at the opponent and shoot at them, everytime Hook is caught in a combo and can't escape.

His Musical Finale "Running Through The Forest" would allow him to dodge all attacks, without needing to hit the controls or input buttons.
Basil of Baker Street (The Great Mouse Detective): World's greatest detective! At least in the mouse world that is. Basil would investigate the stage of the fight, much like a crime scene and even pick up clues that double as weapons, such as a propeller or a mouse trap. His Special Attack would have him investigate a crime scene that hurt the opponent, before pushing them aside as 'worthless' evidence. His Musical Finale "Let Me Be Good To You" would have him require no further evidence and counter each hit with a deduction on his opponent's crime and even stop them from performing combos. Doing damage in the process.

Belle's entire moveset would revolve around books; not magic books, just books on the rest of the cast and fairytales overall. She would be able to switch between each of these books and use what she's learned from them. For Example, 'Romeo and Juliet' gives Belle immunity to stat changes and rose themed weapons that hurt the opponent, like throwing weapons. 'Aladdin' gives her a magic ring that can conjure up magic smoke, furniture on the foe and teleport her. 'Jack and the Beanstalk' plants vines that can raise her up or entangle the foe. There's more books at her disposal, but that's just the general idea. Her Special Attack has her father ride in on his invention, chopping up an entire forest until the opponent is covered and crushed by chopped up logs. Her Musical Finale "Tale As Old As Time" gives her the power to 'skip' a fairytale, turning each of her attacks into the endings from the books. Abu can cling to the opponent and hit them repeatedly, Magic Carpet can be used for aerial attacks, Aladdin has a sword that he 'borrowed' from a guard and Genie can shape-shift in a variety of ways to best the opponent. Aladdin's Special Attack would have Genie distract the opponent, as Aladdin steals something off them and uses it to beat them. Aladdin's Music Finale "Friend Like Me" would have Genie grant a wish, each time Aladdin gets a combo, such as a stat boosts and healing.
Jasmine (Aladdin): The sultan's own daughter that would rather be anything than a prize to be given away. She has learned self defense skills, her father's guards and her pet tiger Rajah in her moveset. Her Musical Finale "A Whole New World" has one the Seven Wonders of the world occasionally pop up in the background to hurt the opponent, as the fight goes on.

His Special Attack would have him become an all powerful Genie and Iago wishing for ways to 'hurt' (not kill) the opponent. His Musical Finale "You're Only Second Rate" would boost all of his stats and attacks, except he can't KO the opponent until the Musical Finale is done.
Simba (The Lion King): King of the Pride Rock and son of Mufasa, the Lion King himself is more than prepared with his claws and iconic roar. His roar can even control the weather to strike lightning and cause windstorms. His Special Attack would have him call on the spirit of his father, Mufasa, as the two of them roar at the opponent. His Musical Finale "Circle Of Life" will have him remember, how we are all connected and draw on the life-force of nature, slowly healing him and giving his roars more range.
Scar (The Lion King): Mufasa's little brother and King after his timely demise, Scar has his claws and his hyenas to make short work of his foe as if their nothing more than a light snack. Moana's Musical Finale "How Far I'll Go" covers the stage in water that has boats to hit the opponent and granting Moana faster speed.
Maui (Moana): The Maori Demigod of the wind and sea, with quite the number of feats from over the years. With his magic fish hook, he can shapeshift into a number of animals, his most common being a hawk. His Special Attack being lassoing the sun into the opponent. His Musical Finale "You're Welcome" makes all damage to Maui, take longer to leave an impact.
And that's that. A LOT longer than I thought it would be. Now your probably thinking, what about all the other Disney media? It's an idea for the first game, so other characters (Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Scrooge McDuck, Goliath, Kim Possible, etc.) would appear in a potential sequel.
Or DLC, since every game these days has it.
Thanks so much for reading all this and taking the time to do! I would love to hear some thoughts and feedback! I had a blast making all this and would like to see if you're interested in hearing more video game ideas.

Ok i'll bite what's a homestuck ~ra✨
oh!! you said the magic words, ra <3 so! without further ado...
let me tell you about homestuck.
ok i never really expected this day to come but holy shit it did and now i am incredibly stumped for words.
homestuck is... a lot. its a webcomic, for starters, that ran from April 13 of 2007 to April 13 of 2016. it was made by andrew hussie, his magnum opus from his series of MS Paint Adventures which is named such due to the art... being made in MS Paint.
the whole hubbub and reason why every 4/13 homestucks come crawling from the pits of hell with grey paint and apple juice is because it is the most significant date in the series. Aside from it being the literal start and end points of the webcomic itself, April 13 is the birthday of homestuck’s main character: John Egbert.
The series itself revolves mainly around four teenagers: John Egbert, Dave Strider (my beloved <3), Rose Lalonde, and Jade Harley. They play this game called SBURB and are essentially... sucked into it and undergo lots of crazy shit within it. I don’t want to get too into it, but its... certainly interesting. For reference, remember they are called the Beta Kids.
At some point in the series, our four protagonists encounter twelve new characters (known as the Beta Trolls) notably themed after each of the zodiacs. These characters are known as trolls. They have grey skin, yellow eyes, and candy corn-esque horns, which is why youll often see many people with those features in the tags of homestuck. They are also major characters in the series and are fan favorites of MANY.
Hussie created an entire culture for these creatures. buckets are known contraceptives and the world they live in is hierarchal. Their worth is based on the color of their blood (candy red being the mutant outcasts, to fuschia being royalty), and each troll of these twelve is denoted by their zodiac symbol.
they also have a different social structure.
of the troll romances, there are four kinds. this isnt super relevant, but most people are confused so here is a breakdown of Quadrants that is grossly oversimplified. also note that these are usually portrayed as monogamous (i.e. you can only have one of each quadrant)
- Matesprits (♡) are your typical lovers--translated as romance to humans. noun: matespritship
- Moirails (♢) are your best friends. they also have the task of being your pseudo-therapist because alternia (troll world) is fucked up like that. noun: moirallegience
- Kismesis (♤) are... hate fucks? essentially they’re your sworn enemies but also you care about them and have sex sometimes. enemies to lovers but you never stop being enemies personified. noun: kismesissitude
Auspistices (♧) are like self designated referees or marriage counsellors. They usually find antagonistic troll pairs and work their problems out, basically feeling nosy because they want their friends to get along.
i really dont have any excuse for why these are so complicated, but the common excuse is that trolls are incapable of feeling like, love as we know it? a lot of their base feelings are pointed towards lust or pity. idk. my homestuck knowledge is rusty. also all the trolls are canonically pansexual i think?
ANYWAY.
Homestuck is typically lauded for its both amazingly chaotic vibes (search Dave Strider quotes or dancestors character designs for reference) and interesting storytelling medium. it doesnt tell a story like any other piece of media ive ever consumed, thus making it interesting to go through. The whole thing also began on a poll system wherein fans actually CHOSE the actions taken in the story before it got too big and hussie simply wrote it by himself. all of the music and animation was made by FANS in collaboration with hussie, leading to AMAZING sequences, [S]Cascade (which is up on youtube!) being one of the best examples.
the whole series is beset on all sides with lots of inane and colorful ideas. Some may call homestuck too “”busy”” and cramped to be good, which i dont totally disagree with. Amid the already colorful cast and dialogue, homestuck also touches many things like time travel, parallel universes, and even existentialism at a few points.
The timeline for each character is absolutely whack beyond comprehension, and most characters in the series have died at least TWICE (Dave and Dirk at the lead with at least 8 deaths each). There are even further amounts of mindfuckery with alternate sets of characters like the Alpha Kids, composed of Jane Crocker (also born 4/13), Dirk Strider, Roxy Lalonde, and Jake English.
Among these characters, I’d like to say that Jane is technically John’s grandmother while John is Jane’s father, Dirk is Dave’s older brother/father and Dave is ALSO Dirk’s older brother and father, Roxy and Rose are each other’s moms, and Jake and Jade are somehow each others grandparents.
Confused? We are too.
...and psst, there are Alpha Trolls aka The Dancestors too. One’s themed after Dante Basco.
Moving on from that, there are guardians and travellers and even more troll ancestors--basically so many characters that if i listed them all i think tumblr would crash this post. They all die and live and fight and die again over and over, but I think that getting into it would reveal a few too many spoilers and also just make my fingers hurt.
Definitively? I don’t think there’s any way for me to tell you all about homestuck and my deep feelings on it in a single sitting and one ask. The webcomic is a vast and deep experience that I don’t want to ruin you experiencing for the first time with too much babbling, but just know that it is something i think is simply brilliant. People definitely shit on it, and most homestucks will tell you themselves ironically or unironically that it ruined their lives, but as a final note--i just wanted to end my 4/13 ramble with one final reference.
you can’t fight the homestuck <3
-
p.s. even if you aren’t gonna get into the series, at least listen to john’s theme song. its really nice. also you can’t fight the homestuck is a classic
john’s theme

Writing: The Rigidity of Terror
Horror movies and rollercoasters have their place, but I think they give people the wrong idea about what fear is, and how a truly terrified character is going to think and act.
After all, movies and rollercoasters are generally safe.
(With very rare exceptions. Rollercoaster accidents end up in the news specifically because they’re fairly uncommon. When you think about how many people go hurtling around soaring curves of steel on a daily basis, you have to conclude rollercoaster maintenance has a darn good record of doing its job.)
Watching a horror movie, or getting on a frightening ride, may evoke fear, but that fear has limits. The movie only lasts a few hours. The ride is over in a few minutes. And in both cases it’s a controlled circumstance. You chose to be there. You can choose how much you react - and even if it’s an extreme reaction, you are generally in a safe place that doesn’t require you to think, and allows screaming, flailing about of hands, etc. You can get it all out of your system and be done with it.
...Well, most people can. Then again, those of us whose nervous system keeps right on jangling tend not to do horror movies or thrill rides in the first place. The fear is a choice, and we choose not to engage with it.
This is not the kind of fear most writers are seeking to portray in books. Your character is having an adventure. AKA “horrible things happening at a safe distance to someone else”. Only if it’s in a story, the horrible things are happening to your characters, and it is distinctly not safe.
This has consequences. I recommend books like Meditations on Violence by Rory Miller and On Killing by Dave Grossman to get at some of the physical and psychological effects of something going very wrong in your life, very suddenly. Here I’m going to stick to one cliché: the character who is “frozen in terror”.
This is a cliché because it’s a real and common phenomenon. “Fight or flight” may be the most frequently discussed fear responses, but “freeze or fawn” are just as real, and just as biologically set off by adrenaline. Plenty of animals freeze in the face of danger. If the predator’s near but hasn’t spotted you yet, this can be a life-saving response. Freeze. Don’t move. Don’t blink. Don’t breathe. Above all, don’t do anything creative and outlandish and guaranteed to stand out and draw attention.
This is a nervous-system response, far below the level of conscious thought. Which means that in the middle of a terrifying situation your brain will tend to lock up. It will freeze. At best, you will be thinking in a very rigid fashion: this is what I know how to do, I am alive because I did these things in the past, this is what I will do.
Which is why people who expect to go into crisis situations - firefighters, soldiers, cops, paramedics - train over and over and over again, until hopefully they can do what they’re supposed to do even in their sleep. Because fear makes you rigid. It steals rational thought. It steals creative thought. It locks you into, survivable pattern, repeat. Over and over. Living in fear - in any situation where you’re constantly close to the edge - makes people live their whole lives as rigid as the most hidebound religious fanatic. Terrified that one slip will be the end of everything.
And yet I’ve seen too many stories (and way too many movies) where characters are expected to think on the fly in the face of overwhelming danger... and mock those who can’t. It’s unrealistic. It’s inhuman. And it will break my suspension of disbelief faster than pink unicorns and spaceships that transform into dragons, because it denies characters their basic humanity.
Yes, we want to write about heroes. But heroes aren’t people who never feel fear. Heroes are those who are terrified, and overwhelmed, and keep moving anyway.
Give terror and fear their due. Make your characters work to think in a crisis. Make them work to move. Give them fear redoubled because they’re trying to fight, and they can’t, and this is the last chance-
And then they move, and they win.
Let your heroes be afraid. Your readers will treasure victory all the more.

The Legend of Korra: Breaking Bending and a Beautiful World
Tumblr media
I think it is safe to say that Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of, if not the greatest animated television series of all time. You could ask a multitude of people what their favorite part of the show was, and various answers are guaranteed to return. Maybe it was the deep mesmerizing worldbuilding that kept a viewer engaged. Or, it could be the lovable and compelling cast of characters viewers could easily relate to. And, it is safe to mention the themes the show presented about war, forgiveness, and growth that taught viewers valuable lessons that they are still applying to this day. Regardless of the reason, there is one unifying factor as to why all of those parts of the show are excellent, and that is because of the expert and meticulous writing. Praise must be due to Aaron Eshaz and his talented team for making such a tightly written and nearly flawless show.
Now, there should be no misconception. Aaron Eshaz is not the creator of the series. He is merely the head writer. The creators are two separate people, Mike DiMartino and Brian Konietzko. They certainly have a hand in the creation of their masterpiece, but it is important to acknowledge that the duo did not refine Avatar by themselves. No, without Eshaz and most of his team, another creation was made. Another series that is not regarded with nearly as much universal acclaim as their last. Together, the creators of Avatar made The Legend of Korra, airing on Nickelodeon in 2012.
This particular show is not met with the same universal love that its predecessor receives. In fact, the community is quite divided on the synopsis on its quality. Some believe it to be just as good, or even better than the original. Others argue that it’s less than a fraction of the greatness of ATLA and refuse to call it a sequel. Unfortunately, my opinion on the series leans more towards the latter, and it is not due to blinding nostalgia. In fact, there are certain critical and fundamental changes and writing decisions that make the show flawed beyond repair, and as a result, pales in comparison to its predecessor. The Legend of Korra is a prime example of a story crumbling apart due to a failure of its creators sacrificing important worldbuilding for convenience.
It is easy to start somewhere for an example, because one can be found at the very start of The Legend of Korra. In this scene, Korra, the main character, is seen bending three different elements as a child, proving that she is the next Avatar. On its own, the scene is cute and entertaining. However, when knowing the context and information that Avatar: The Last Airbender established, this scene breaks fundamental rules that were set for its universe. According to A:TLA, an Avatar is not supposed to know they’re the Avatar until they’re a teenager. Then, they learn the elements in an important cycle. All of this is ignored in Korra’s introduction, and it is baffling as to why this writing decision was made.
In the show and creators’ defense, this could have been a creative choice to make Korra different and unique from the past Avatars. However, when doing this, Mike and Brian should have kept their world’s rules in mind. Kirk Hamilton, a journalist for Kotaku describes it as “The show chose to portray bending more as a magical power than a spiritual martial art.” This statement perfectly sums up the drastic difference in bending. Bending in A:TLA was not magic, it was a practiced art that was learned from the world’s nature. It is important to not forgo what was already there to maintain consistency. The show hasn’t even started, but The Legend of Korra is already showing little promise in it’s writing. And as the season continues, this specific issue remains to be a problem.
Later into the first season, the antagonist, Amon, is introduced. He is a “freedom fighter” who believes that non-benders deserve the same rights as benders. A main drive for him to equalize others is to take a bender’s ability to bend. He does this to strike fear into Korra and her friend group of benders. However, his immersion of a threat is shattered during the season finale. It is revealed that Amon is actually a waterbender who used blood bending (a rare and powerful subset of waterbending) to erase bending.
Outside of the Avatar universe, this would have been an exciting twist. Unfortunately, that is not the case for TLOK, and for that this twist suffers. Hamilton calls Amon’s bending a “retcon” meaning that blood bending was not used as intended, and rewritten to fit the current narrative. In A:TLA, blood bending is only used during a full moon, and does not take one’s bending away. Hamilton’s remarks reflect that this change was both a failure in writing and a failure in consistency of the world that was built before.
These examples are just from the first season, but they prove that DiMartino and Konietzko failed to understand the world they set their show in. On several occasions, the power system of bending was manipulated for an attempt to make a more exciting narrative. Because of these changes, the connection between A:TLA and TLOK hardly exists. There is no consistency, so it’s hard to enjoy new stories from the same universe when that can’t actually be true. My, and many others', loss of immersion in the show prove how important it is for a series to remain consistent within its world, even across different series. Changing anything important to the world’s structure is bound to weaken a series sequel, just as The Legend of Korra will always be second to its predecessor.

Why I Almost Went To UT Austin; And Why I Didn’t
Tumblr media
(As a preface: I will be speaking mainly in vague details about my personal life and the college I ended up choosing. This is for my own privacy and comfort. In addition, I am not bashing the UT system or anyone who choose to go there; I have loved ones going there very soon, and I have a lot admiration for the school and all the opportunities it can afford someone. However, these are the reasons I will not be attending and some reasons any school might miss out on students they might have otherwise garnered. As well, all photos are mine unless otherwise stated. Enjoy!)
Let me set the scene.
Choosing a college is hard. It’s freakin hard. It’s even more difficult in the middle of a global pandemic. You can’t actually go anywhere, can’t take tours or go to fairs or get a feel for the city you want to call home. I struggled a lot with really connecting to any of the schools I was interested in. Lots of apathy towards the whole process. Despite all this, I had one school I had been interested in since the end of sophomore year, and I thought that was the only place I wanted to go.
Tumblr media
The University of Texas at Austin appealed to me for a few different reasons. In no particular order:
It was close to family.
I have tons, and I mean tons of family in Texas. This would have put me significantly closer to them and meant I had a support system when going to college. Making sure I would have a nice warm dinner and bath to escape to on crappy days seems pretty nice during global pandemics! Notably, however, it was not close to my immediate family.
It was in a big city.
Looking back I can laugh at myself and the idea I had for my college experience. At the time I was much more focused on the social and Instagramable side of the school I chose. Any time my parents suggested a school, the first thing I did was look for photos of it. If it didn’t have the feel I was looking for (young, new, hip, growing) I seldom looked further.
Austin was exactly what I was looking for. A city with a 32.4% growth rate in the last decade (1), it screamed new and exciting. I wanted to be apart of that vibe during college, especially when I thought my boyfriend and I would be going to the same place (we are still happily together and just going to different schools, btw). Anything less didn’t seem worth it or fun enough.
It’s a high ranking journalism school.
Rankings are subjective so it absolutely depends on where you look, but UT Austin consistently ranks within the top ten journalism schools in the nation, which is incredible. I’ve wanted to study journalism since about sophomore year and I was so excited that on top of the aforementioned attributes, this would be a reputable place to study and get a degree from. Truth be told, I didn’t do nearly any research into the actual programs, opportunities, or benefits UTA offered, #foreshadowing.
Tumblr media
UTA was the first school I applied to, and as such it established my expectations for how applying to a big name school would work. Let me just say it, the application process sucked. I ended up writing two full-length essays, only one of which I used and extensively edited, and at least five different short answer paragraphs. I believe I also had to submit a resume when I applied for the Journalism Honors program, though that was additional. It was intense, and quite honestly didn’t seem worth it. Up until this point I was pretty much riding the wave of, “Yeah, UT Austin, that’s a school people will respond positively to when they ask where I’m going.” As aforementioned, I hadn’t done any in-depth research into what programs UT had to offer me, but from what little looking I had done, nothing was jumping out at me. With nothing spectacular being shown to me on a silver platter, enticing me to #golonghorns, the arduous application process felt taxing and stressful.
(A little side note on writing college essays: do not force yourself to write about something that doesn’t feel genuine to you. I don’t care if you think you have something that they’re bound to notice or admire; if you’re not passionate about it, you won’t get anywhere. As mentioned, I wrote two different essays when applying to UT. In my first essay, I wrote about leadership experiences in high school and how they shaped me. Important? Yes. Influential for me? Absolutely. But nothing I’m ready to rave about to anyone who walks through the door. That essay felt fake and artificial. I knew I didn’t like it or want it to represent me. So, I sat down and started writing about a situation that happened over the summer at my high school, one that really ground my gears. I couldn’t stop talking about how upset I was. I wrote all about the experience and how it made me want to be a better journalist and to always help to portray the truth. If anyone would like to know more about that story, let me know. The point is, I was passionate about the topic and it made it much easier to write believably. I didn’t just need this piece to represent me, I wanted it to represent me. I wanted the application readers to understand my frustration and feel all the emotions I felt in those moments. Pick something you feel that way about.)
I’m not going to BS and say that the application process will be fun if the school you’re applying to is the right one for you. All I’m saying is it should feel worth it, like all this hard work and effort is really going to culminate into your dream school. I definitely didn’t feel that with UTA, which was one of my first red flags. I felt very disconnected from the school, like I was just another fish in the pond of out of state applicants, hoping they’d like my bright colors over the next.
Tumblr media
A little background: I am, for the purposes of Texas schools, an out-of-state applicant. I don’t have residency in TX and I didn’t go to a public high school in TX, and this contributes heavily to UTA admissions. I’ll link a great article going further in-depth on the admissions numbers and percentages, but due to the advantages granted to TX resident applicants, approximately only 9% of UTA students are out of state (2). That number is so low because TX students in the top 6% of their graduating class, no matter their test scores, are automatically accepted. This means that on top of great grades, out-of-state applicants for UTA have ACT scores that are between 3-5 points higher and SAT scores that are about 150 points higher than their average TX counterpart.
If you aren’t stressed out just reading that, teach me your ways because I was sure was.
This was sort of where the perceived animosity started between myself and UTA. I constantly checked my email and mailbox, hoping to get a letter or promotional email or something to indicate they were interested in me as a student. Seldom did they ever come. I got hundreds of emails from other schools and received nearly as much snail mail, but hardly ever from UT, even after I asked to receive their newsletters and an informational packet (which never came, BTW).
I quickly came to realize that all of this was likely due to the fact that I was so far away, out of the UT sphere of control or influence. Most of the emails I received were from schools in my neighboring states or in my state, closer with a higher likelihood of recruiting me. A school in TX, where I did not study or hold residency, would not seek me out.
Here’s my issue. They didn’t have to seek me out. That’s fine, whatever, makes sense. But I sought them out. I signed up for everything. I filled out their long application, sent it in early. I tried to tour the school in the throws of COVID, having to settle for a self-paced walk about an empty campus to satisfy my need to know more about this school, to learn more about what it could offer me. None of my efforts proved fruitful, and it didn’t feel like the school really wanted me there. I wondered whether this was really where I wanted to be.
Tumblr media
By mid-November, while I wouldn’t have called myself discouraged, I would definitely have identified with the word antsy. When I sent in my application in September, they notified me that I would get my answer sometime in January or February. I can’t even explain how far away that felt. Especially being out of state, I wanted to know their decision as quickly as possible. The wait felt like an eternity.
My dad has always stressed the importance of not putting all your eggs in one basket. While I had shot my shot with UT and was waiting for the scoreboard to change, he was still exploring other options I had in the world of journalism schools. Without me knowing or really agreeing, he scheduled a tour with a school about two hours away from where we lived. It would be on a Saturday, just the two of us, and we’d make a day trip out of it. Honestly, I was more excited for the trip than the school itself. It had always been one I had turned my nose up at; to be fair, I did that with almost any school that wasn’t UT.
We were about five minutes late to the opening presentation at the school. Quickly shuffling into the only seats we saw, some in the very front row of the socially distanced conference hall, we settled in for a lot of new information  coming our way. Though he had planned it, my dad didn’t know that much about the school either. We were both skeptical, a bit frazzled, and tired from having woken up around five o’clock that morning.
But with every slide, every question, every time the presenter opened her mouth, we were drawn further in.
It wasn’t just the feel of the school, or the location, or the looks. The facts didn’t lie. I won’t share too many so as to keep at least some privacy, but to say this school was my diamond in the rough wouldn’t be too much of an overstatement. Despite that, throughout the day and our two guided tours, I had a nagging feeling in the back of my mind, keeping me from getting too excited about this new school. I couldn’t help but think about UT and all of the emotional commitment I had already made to it. How excited my family was that I was hoping to go there, how happy my grandmother was that I would be closer to her. I thought of the teachers I had complained to about the long essays, the people who had edited those essays for me. I thought about the burnt orange hoodie sitting in my closet, towards the front due to how often I wore it.
The new school won over both my heart and my head. While I really felt at home there, I also would have to have been dead to overlook all of the opportunities it could afford me. I was close to my immediate family and the town I had gone to high school in. I could come home often, visit family and friends more frequently than if I moved states away. Everything seemed right.
In between our tours, due to the nagging I was feeling, I tried to schedule a tour with UTA, to at least give it a fighting chance. I figured, had I not had an in-person tour of this new school, I wouldn’t have given it a second thought. Maybe a real tour would make me fall in love with UT again. However, when I tried to schedule one, all of the tours for the rest of the semester were completely booked, and the calendar wasn’t yet available for the spring semester. I immediately called to find out more, only to be told that they weren’t sure the state of in-person tours upon return to campus after holidays due to COVID. Looking back, I know it was a sign. UT had, for all intents and purposes, closed its doors on me. It was time I accepted the willing arms of the school I gazed upon with wonder, truly in limbo as to what might happen next.
Tumblr media
By the end of December, I was admitted and had committed to the new school. I wouldn’t find out about UT for another month, but honestly, I didn’t really need to. This new school had everything I could ever want, and UT had a fair amount of drawbacks. I didn’t and still don’t feel any remorse for committing without having known UT’s decision on me.
I received an email January 29th, over a month after having committed to the new school, that I needed to check my UT MyStatus page. I never really worried about getting in due to my test scores and grades, but I felt a level of anger towards the school that I thought I had gotten over, and finding out I had gotten in after all would bring up new emotions. I checked the page, and sure enough I had been admitted to the University of Texas at Austin’s class of 2025. I wasn’t elated or jumping up and down with joy or breaking down happy crying in my parent’s arms. I was pretty stoic, thinking about all that could have been had I felt any more like UT really wanted me.
Tumblr media
(3)
All things happen for a reason. Because I didn’t feel much reciprocation in my love for UT, I instead found the school of my dreams, one that I know I’ll be much happier at. I wouldn’t change any of my decisions, except maybe stressing over the essays as much as I did.
My final thoughts would have to be this: I don’t blame the UT system for not focusing as much on its out-of-state applicants. I mean, I do, but I understand that it’s often simply not in their best interest. I do think that they should have reached out, sent more newsletters, have actually sent me the information packet I requested, anything to make me feel more connected with this place I was dying to call home. While I know they aren’t very focused on bringing in students from other states, I think they should be, especially for those that are going the extra mile to reach out to them.
The right school will have a lot of different things for every different person. For me, that meant being close to my immediate family, knowing I would have all of the opportunities I wanted, being financially secure, and feeling like the school wanted me, not just the other way around. UT didn’t provide me all of that. Finding the school that will is the most important thing. Your needs and wants may be different, but don’t toss all of your eggs in one basket. Don’t be afraid to change your mind and always keep looking for something better. For all you know, it may be out there.

Note
both puppets, Scraptrap, Scrap baby, music man, normal chica, mr. hippo, and finally nightmare fredbear. we need a good mix, you know?
(Thanks for the request, I will get jumpscared SO bad and I’m excited to find out by who. Edit: No longer excited, hated it, I needed to pay attention to the audio because of Chica and Marion, hope the chapter will be more fun for it. Full disclosure, in my first run I died ten seconds in due to Nightmarionne, so- I did a second one that escalated just as badly. I’m an idiot, RIP Henry. Warning for a tiny bit of torture at the end, not TOO prolonged, but it’s gonna be there!)
“Alright.” Henry sat there with Helpy in front of a giant spreadsheet, showing little portrays of all the animatronics. “Am I actually supposed to believe that Foxy can throw in all of his parts one by one? And then repair himself to attack me?” “Yep!” The little bear happily confirmed. “… I do not have a choice aside from accepting it, do I?” “Yep!” “And how do I tell that he is here?” “A little figure on your desk! If it’s Bonnie, Bonnie is out, if there is Foxy, Foxy is out!” “Why… is Bonnie in Foxy’s cove?” Helpy shrugged. “Funtime Foxy doesn’t share, so there’s only one cove.” MY GOD. THERE WAS ONLY ONE COVE- Irritated Henry frowned, but he chose to ignore it. “… is there a way for me to tell who is there in general? I feel like having to check every single place on the camera is somewhat difficult and rather unfair.” Before he could say anything, the sheet turned grey, only leaving a selected few of them bright and colorful. His eyes went from one portray of the Marionette to the other. “… why thank you.” Helpy looked at the selection, frowning a little. “Oh… that’s… that’s not good. Uhm, Mr. Miller?” The man had stood up by now, making his way towards the door. “… yes?” “… you should keep the global music box on for tonight. B-but not too loud!” “… thanks you for the advice.” With that he exited the room, the weirdly cold main area greeting him instead. Making his way right towards the office, his mind was buzzing with a few questions to himself. These questions were only amplified when he entered the now more normal seeming office, seeing a rather familiar face. “You.” “Me!” Cheerfully Scrap Baby responded. “Good to see you again, bitchass.” “Excuse me-“ “Apology accepted.” She put her skaters on the table, waiting for Henry to sit down on the other side- which he did, seeing as he hardly had another choice. “Look at you. MISERABLE. I love it!” “… and I enjoy seeing you all scrapped up, made out of trash and metal scraps. However, I have the satisfaction of knowing that you are in this condition because of me. You, however, do not.” Leaning over, the girl let her claw snap. “… you are a brave boy, Miller… let’s see how brave you’ll be when I test how easily I can behead you with my claw!” Henry’s hand was hovering over the button for the electronic shock and she noted, leaning back again. He had the shock, she had her claw… it was only a matter of time to see who could react quicker. A raspy, broken voice sounded from the back. “Wow… look at you two… getting along like a house on fire… I almost don’t want to interrupt… a l m o s t.” Instantly Henry looked down, flipping up the monitor to activate the global music box and reset the ventilation, as well as spotting the animatronic in the duct system and quickly placing a lure. The nightmarish animatronic chuckled. “Oh, Henry… don’t you want to look at me…?” “Seeing as it will take me life… no.” Despite his words, he sneaked a short glance at the creature- it was hard to ignore, so giant and unnatural, his curiosity was begging him to take a look. “… as much as I hate to be rude.” His head felt feverish, there was something wrong. Baby was from his old home. She referred to the things they had gone through together. Not that it was much, but it was there. And then there was the monstrous creature, one he knew could exist, but never came to fruition. This place of course wasn’t tied to time and space, but it seemed this place wasn’t even tied to a single-strained reality. It would also explain why everyone seemed to know him. That threw up a few more questions though, for example, if the souls roaming were actually- He could hear the global music box playing, as well as Chica’s rummaging in the back. When he lowered the camera again, he stared to the side, trying his hardest to not look at the creature, while keeping an eye on Baby and her position. “… you will look. Eventually. I know. You know. Why are you drawing out the inevitable, Henry? I thought you hated that.” “It is not inevitable.” Henry said, his voice full of confidence, but his eyes remained on the corner to the side. If he just kept the routine up, then- … dear god. The power was draining a little bit too quickly for his liking. Was the music box this much of a strain? It wasn’t too bad yet, if he kept things going it might would be tight, but not impossible- Out of nowhere an obnoxious voice sounded. "Uh-oh! How unfortunate! Uh-oh! How unfortunate! I know how much you like to fight, so I'll add a new problem to your night!" Snapping around, Henry spotted a girl- ANOTHER DAMN BALLOON CHILD- stand in a corner, snickering to herself, watching him with glee. “Wh-what!? Who are you?” But as he asked that, the entire screen started to rumble and quake, something was coming from the left, it was coming FAST, it must have been something INCREDIBLE RAGEFUL and in a blind panic he smashed all the doors to that side close. The lights flickered off for a second and the Balloon Girl disappeared- the creature however had been locked out. It felt like it was too close- his brain wasn’t supposed to react that panicked! Had that been Dave? Really? It sounded like- His mind was a mess. The Nightmarionette chuckled, now lounging at the right side of the office. For some reason Baby snickered too. “What is so funny?!” He hissed, quickly flipping through the cameras, checking the vents and airduct cameras, trying desperately to find who this creature had added- Then his eyes lowered down to the energy that was being wasted. Rapidly it decreased. No, no, the global music box couldn’t be draining THIS much power, right?! Was it even possible to keep the global music box playing all night? Twenty-four percent at two AM. No way he could do it. Frustrated he looked to the side, wondering who exactly would come for him once the lights were out. Would the puppet or Chica come into the office? Taking revenge for being deprived of their other form of entertainment? He hadn’t seen the Nightmare Fredbear for the entirety of the night, something that slightly disappointed him. The only nightmarish creature he was allowed to see was the one he wasn’t allowed to look at. Now it was actually inevitable to die- and the machines in front of him enjoyed it, obviously. The way they looked at each other made it clear they were deciding on who would get the honors. With a headache Henry glanced at his deactivated tablet. … if they were unlucky, then the newly arrived stranger would be the one getting to strike first. “Why are you so quiet, Henry? Bear got your tongue?” “… was there anything left to talk about?” Baby snickered. “Maybe you should cut that attitude. Or I’ll cut your tongue out… both would fix it!” “That is not a conversation worth having, at least in my eyes. I am open for a counterpoints, but us talking about it will not aid either of us. Correct?” Ten percent. It was still draining quickly, instantly down to double digits, and it just had turned to three AM. “Any last words?” Baby asked. Henry just tsked, closing all the doors and glancing at her. “Get it over already. Boasting is not a polite thing to do.” She clacked her claw. “You just want to get me shocked before going down.” “If that is what you think.” A few heartbeats now- Then the lights went down. … what a familiar noise indeed… Slowly it went darker and darker, the afterglow of the lamps fading fast. Henry breathed slowly, listening in, trying to guess who was approaching to kill him. From the side, the Nightmarionnette moved closer, putting a heavy claw on his shoulder, leaning down. Its bright white eyes and shining teeth were the only thing still seeing- aside from the stripes, vaguely. Henry stared inside them, without showing fear. “Henry…” “Yes, Charlie?” “… you left the right door locked up until now.” For a moment Henry was frozen, then he slapped his own face. “I am such an idiot.” “Now, now, do not damage the goods… that is my job!” Picking him up carefully, like a little doll, the Nightmarion let one of his claws move over Henry’s stomach- Henry just hanging in the grasp, stubbornly refusing to fight back. “… will I go to actual hell after this?” The machine laughed, it sounded a bit like a circular saw, a far distance away. “Henry! This IS your hell! And… the nightmare is just beginning.” With that he dug his claws inside of his body, right at the chest. It was a horrible crushing feeling, the pressure on his skin, of his lungs growing stronger and stronger until it broke open, blinding white pain, opening up- One claw peeled off the skin, the other aimed right for the heart, pulling it out until separating it with and abrupt RIP- … how was he still conscious, this was far too much pain, far too much damage, how was he- how was he still conscious... Fascinated the machine looked at the heart. “You have one! What a surprise. Now… to the real test.” It took it to his maw, shoving it against his teeth, opening it up, tearing it to pieces, as a long tongue slipped out, catching a few bloody drops, while another few dropped on the ground, joining the pool from where Henry was being held. “… I do like the taste…” With that it reached out again, reaching in- And that was thankfully the last thing he experienced before fading away. He woke back up on the couch, coughing abruptly, feeling close to dry heaving- Stumbling over, he got himself a glass of water. Then he sat down next to the sink, trying to breathe more regularly. … it would get better. He would get better.

Note: Every single headcanon is highly subjective and even I will probably change my mind about it. This is only a PROPOSAL.
If you’re interested in my interpretation and methodology, read on!
Canon Clues
Although there are no official birthdays for the characters, several Adventure materials have provided “goalposts” where we can fit some characters’ birthdays. I strive to make my HCs as canon-compliant as possible, so it’s important for me to take this info into account.
Miyako is stated to be a Gemini in 02.
The official synopsis of tri. Indicates that Taichi is 17 years old during the series, suggesting the has an April-June birthday.
Sure, you’re free to ignore this little nugget if you prefer, but I personally like to think there’s a reason they mentioned Taichi’s age explicitly — something they never did before. They also never mentioned the explicit age of any of the other characters.
Funnily enough, the DALEK official website and novel lists the character’s ages during the events of the film. Since the film takes place in the summer of 2010, taking those numbers at face-value would require us to believe all 8 characters have birthdays in the first half of the year.
This contradicts the explicit on-screen information about Jou’s age in the original series (see below).
I’m proposing this should be interpreted as their “average” ages, rather than precise ages at this specific moment in time — after all, in Kizuna it’s more difficult to identify the characters by their school year, like they always did before.
Sora’s birthday is canonically before the events of Our War Game. The film takes place during the spring holidays, which typically begin around the third week of March.
Sora having a March birthday is so universally accepted by Japanese fans that it’s even on her Wikipedia page. I wouldn’t be surprised if more recent writers took that information into account, post-OWG, and portrayed her accordingly.
Notice that Pisces is only the more likely option considering the canon timeline and Sora’s personality — Aries (late March) and Aquarius (mid-February) could fit as well. Hence why I consider this choice [semi-canon].
Jou, who is a 6th-grader, mentions he’s 11 years old during Adventure. This suggest his birthday would be after August 1.
Ken is supposed to be 9 years old in August 2000, when he’s in Year 3, suggesting he has an April-August birthday.
This is different from other guidebooks which only list the characters “average” ages, because this lists Ken’s precise age during a specific event.
I believe Ken being exactly 9 years old went to the Digital world is deliberate, since Osamu is stated to be 3 years older than Ken, hadn’t yet turned 12 when he died.
Again, except for Miyako, Sora, and Jou birthdays, I can understand why fans chose to ignore any of this.
Personal Notes
My method isn’t about finding a putative “Official / True Birthday” — that never existed, at least for the Adventure eight. It’s about finding birthdays that work within the limitations of canon (see previous section).
My HCs are based on the personality / character archetypes represented by the the zodiac signs. In theory, any Chosen Child could be understood as representing a specific symbolical archetypes.
The problem is that the Adventure characters are quite complex and often deconstruct traditional archetypes. This explains why it’s so hard for fans to agree on which sign they are supposed to represent. I should also note that anime series seem to understand astrological archetypes slightly differently from the Western mainstream tradition, which explains why typical anime zodiac signs sometimes feel a bit “off”.
Nevertheless, some archetypes are so strong that most of the fandom seems to have reached a consensus: Jou/Virgo and Koushirou/Aquarius, for example. Then you have textbook examples of archetypes like Gemini/Miyako (unsurprisingly canon), Taichi/Aries, and Hikari/Pisces. But even there is a lot of room for disagreement and subjective interpretation!
*
The 02 writers clearly intended Daisuke to symbolise Fire, Miyako Air, Iori Earth and, due to the Dark Ocean connection, Ken Water. In fact, it’s super easy to place those four characters into any traditional 4-group personality types, such as the four temperaments, Jung’s types, blood types, ABCD personality, etc.
My HCs respect this, and ended up creating two polar opposites within the team: Daisuke/Miyako (mutable) and Ken/Iori (cardinal).
*
It’s tempting to ascribe 12 main characters = 12 signs, but post-tri. I’m inclined to do something different and not put myself into such a limiting framework.
For this reason I repeat some signs, and I don’t have any Taurus character (sorry!).
*
My MAIN innovative choice is that I suspect Taichi and Yamato might represent the same sun sign.
Now, I understand this is an extremely controversial opinion. It isn’t a possibility I thought about until quite recently.
But Taichi and Yamato being “different but the same / two sides of the same coin” is incredibly well represented if both of them correspond to the Aries personality archetype.
After all, they’re the leaders, the heroes, the Knights in shining armor. This explains their incredible similarities, despite superficial differences. as well as their love-hate dynamic: the rivalry, the union, the way they complement and balance each other out in an almost instinctive way.
Here are some examples of the Aries/Aries dynamic from the literature...
Both of you are independent individuals and you don’t like feeling “owned” by anyone. Neither of you can tolerate being dominated or bossed by anyone else, so you probably make your own decisions, and direct your own lives. You respect one another’s autonomy, and a relationship that is based on constant togetherness and dependency wouldn’t suit either of you. Sometimes, however, there is too much emphasis on individualism rather than on being close and nurturing the relationship. You both have proud egos, and are sensitive to criticism. Almost inevitably you will compete with each other, and in small doses this can be invigorating. But it easily becomes nasty, and one of you is likely to get hurt. If you’ve ever seen two rams locking horns, you know what I mean! You either respect one another immensely or detest one another – rarely anything in between. (X)
If your relationship has been built on the basis that you are equals, the fire element produces tremendous vision and industriousness. Your combined power and effort could well be a force to be reckoned with — but again, only if you both learn to subdue your own ego in the service of each other. Remember, you can’t always be right. You need to try hard to see things from each other’s perspective; this will help the two of you become a great partnership over time. (x)
When Mars clashes with Mars, the result can be full-scale war, with all flags flapping, bravely and colorfully. Occasional flare-ups are bound to occur when these two are thrown into close, daily proximity, without the relief of some separateness in their association. But there will also be some glorious Highs to offset these Lows. (...)  It's been said that Aries people have a way about them. They do. Their own way. Yet, despite that sometimes antagonistic Martian exterior, they'll sense each other's desperate need to be appreciated and liked. When they get together, they may struggle for leadership, but the experience will supply some well-needed lessons. The shock of living with someone - or being around some- one - as innocently thoughtless, selfish and aggressive as one's self, is sure to soften any battering Ram, although there may be a few scars to show for the les- sons in living thus mastered. Aries hearts always carry more scars than the Rams ever show, or openly discuss. (x)
Sounds familiar, doesn't it? The more you read, the more this pattern begins to make sense. Try to watch the Dark Masters arc, the Agumon-is-kidnapped mini arc, tri., and even Kizuna with this possibility in mind, and you’ll understand what I mean.
Sure, order to accept this theory, you have to understand Yamato as a more atypical reserved / sensitive Aries (influenced by a Cancer Moon, perhaps?) and Taichi as a more “pure” Arien type. Yamato is more like a baby lamb, right? (don’t tell it to his face).
You can make a very strong argument for Leo!Taichi (that was my initial HC as well) or Yamato as almost anything else. I wouldn’t disagree. But why not come up with a fresh perspective to explain these two?
Oh, and in case you’re curious, their (canon) Japanese Zodiac is also the same: Dragon, the direct equivalent to Aries.
*
A note about tri.: typing Maki and Daigo seemed straightforward enough. Maki is the stereotypical Scorpio antagonist, and Goggle Boy Daigo’s partner evolved into a literal lion.
I couldn’t resist the idea of making Meiko a Libra, considering her digimon partner is literally the Libra and Meiko is the 9th member of the group. But  personality probably fits other signs better — it’s very tempting to type her a Virgo, the polar opposite of Hikari. She could also be the missing Taurus element (Mei as the literal May Queen).
The truth is... I can’t decide!
*
Disclaimer: There is zero scientific evidence for astrology and, as far as I’m concerned, it’s only interesting as a tool to analyze fictional characters in symbolic /archetypal terms. My headcanons are based on extensive reading about astrology, its symbolism and psychological profiles; I’m happy to share my sources (they’re not from pop astrology). But I’m also aware of the Barnum effect. We are all biased; there are no right or wrong options. Everyone’s conflicting headcanons are equally valid.
Feel free to ask questions or request more in-depth explanations for my suggestions, but FFS don’t start arguing with me and insisting I’m “wrong” based on other people’s equally subjective and disputable headcanons.

Dick Thornburgh: An Inspection of Politicians’ Core Beliefs across their Careers
The post was written by Caleb Tsai, an Undergraduate Computer Science major at the University of Pittsburgh and a student in the Honors College’s Foundations of Research and Scholarship course in the Spring of 2021
Dick Thornburgh was an extremely influential figure in both the United States and the greater Pittsburgh region, serving as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, Governor of Pennsylvania, and U.S. Attorney General. In 1998, the Dick Thornburgh Papers, the archive upon which this research is founded, was donated to the University of Pittsburgh Library System. I chose to research Dick Thornburgh because I was intrigued by both the depth and breadth of Thornburgh’s actions throughout his career. Initially, I did not know what specific areas I wanted to delve into, but the Thornburgh Papers provided an abundance of resources to aid me during my search.
Tumblr media
Figure 1 (above): Formal picture of Dick and Ginny Thornburgh with their four sons, 1972. Dick Thornburgh Papers, Series XVIII. Photographs, 1932-2004.  Dick Thornburgh Papers, 1932- , AIS.1998.30, Archives & Special Collections, University of Pittsburgh Library System.
My motivation for this proposal is mainly due to an interest in whether political figures are trustworthy in following through on their campaign agendas prior to being elected. At the time of this publication, the 2020 Presidential election between incumbent Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden has recently concluded, and I want to learn more about whether ideas and beliefs held by political figures change or remain consistent over the entirety of their careers.
Thus, my research question is defined as follows:
As Attorney General of the United States, how was Dick Thornburgh’s focus on criminal justice and environmental reform tied to his preceding title of Governor of Pennsylvania?
I felt that this initial question could then introduce a larger problem statement:
Discover trends across two ends of Thornburgh's political career to identify continuity and change regarding criminal and environmental reform.
Finally, I constructed my significant statement, which can be tied back to my initial interests in Dick Thornburgh and his career:
Uncover insight into the inner workings of prominent political figures and how their ideas developed throughout their career.
In terms of archival material, I concluded that Thornburgh remained most aligned with issues regarding criminal reform during his role as both Governor of Pennsylvania from 1978-1987 and Attorney General of the United States from 1988-1991. In September 1978, his first year as governor, Thornburgh published an “Outlined 7-point plan for "cleaning up" corruption in PA's General Assembly, Harrisburg, PA.” I identified from Thornburgh’s direct quotes (Figure 2) that he utilized very confident and passionate language in describing the sheer frequency and need to reduce corruptions within government: ‘I know how to get rid of corruption because I’ve done it… The only way to clean up Harrisburg is to clean it out. And the effort has to start at the very top.’ In terms of context, it is also important to note that this news release was published by Thornburgh and his running mate William Scranton for their campaign, which explains why Thornburgh is portrayed in this manner.

Campaign for Governor of Pennsylvania, 1978.  Dick Thornburgh Papers, 1932-, AIS.1998.30, Archives & Special Collections, University of Pittsburgh Library System.
Later in Thornburgh’s career as Attorney General of the United States, I found that a very similar sentiment in combating corruption remained at the forefront of Thornburgh’s mind in his “Statement Before the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Concerning Fraud in the Savings and Loan Association Area” in February 1989. From the initial paragraphs of this document (Figure 3), one can tell that Thornburgh maintains his strict stance against corruption regardless of the institution, the party in question now a financial rather than government body. In a position of greater influence, Thornburgh then effectively uses his power by addressing and insisting the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs take action, conveying Thornburgh’s genuine desire to combat the same corruptions he addressed early in his political career.

Thus, Dick Thornburgh did in fact represent continuity in his vision for reforming the corruption that readily existed at the beginning of his career, the end of his career, and still exists in the present. However, one must understand that not every political figure may be as forthcoming or stay true to their initial agendas. To reinforce the results of this study, the next steps moving forward will be to examine political figures from a vast array of backgrounds and political systems. In this manner, incorporating a wide range of diverse variables will lead to stronger and more reliable results. Ultimately, we will then continue to uncover more and further appreciate these gifted men and women in our history who have and continue to pave the institutions we view as places of authority and influence.

Characters: Virgil, Nonbinary!Roman
Summary: You’ve heard of enemies to lovers now get ready for acquaintances to friends to now we’re fighting because I’m scared of your rejection so I’m pretending it’s your fault when it clearly is mine to friends again, even though you’re an idiot, but I still love you to lovers.
Roman and Virgil are both part of the theater group of their school, Roman is one of the actors, while Virgil is the head of the stage design group. Despite being in the same year and having lessons in the same building, they hadn’t really ever talked to each other, but everything was about to change when the teachers, heads of the whole theater group, announced that they were going to challenge themselves by presenting one of Euipides’ last plays: The Bacchantes. Follow our two main characters helping each other out as one is forced to learn how to act in a matter of months and the other goes through a journey of self-discovery as he studies his role.
Pairing(s): Prinxiety (I’m unpredictable)
Warning(s): Mild swearing, Death mention (mostly when talking about the tragedy), Blood mention (once), Negative thinking, Implied toxic parenting (once), [Me projecting heavily onto Virgil (also Ro at some point)]
A/n: I’ve been writing this for months and I can’t explain how proud I am to show you guys this! Before you start reading, I want to inform you that the school system I write about here is not the American one since I know little to nothing about it. Instead I’ll be using the one of my country for reasons of simplicity. (All names I use here are invented, so you can place the events wherever you’d like.) I thought about doing a long for this plot but I chose to write a one shot instead, since it’s pretty long I decided to divide it into two acts, the second one is coming very soon. I studied and read the whole play translated in my original language, that’s where the inspiration for my au came from. All the English translations I used for the play are from here, here and here. The song mentioned is So Contagious by Acceptance. That being said, hope you enjoy!

What now?
It was during an October’s Tuesday that Virgil had started panicking due to school stress.
It wasn’t like his teachers hadn’t been pressuring his class ever since they entered their first fifth year lesson: partly because of the final exams, the rest of the time they asked about their university choices.
This year’s archaeological excavation, an experience reserved only to the students of his course, was also placed exactly in those three weeks of October were the theater group had started.
Tuesday in October for Virgil meant lessons until half past midday, research for the upcoming excavation exhibition until two p.m., theater club for an hour, then back to doing research with one of his teachers and half of his classmates until 17:00.
In all honesty, he wouldn’t have minded being buried alive when they’d have to cover back up the site.
Virgil had tried convincing himself that it wasn’t really that hard, besides the club had just started and the first few days were mostly focused on helping the first years settle, be comfortable with the teachers and also test out their abilities. And this one was only the second meeting.
But, of course, his day had to get worse. Life was trying him, and boy, did he hate sudden drastic changes.
It was when he noticed all the odd attention he was getting by the teachers that he realized something was definitely going to go wrong.
Everyone took a seat on the wooden bleachers of the old gym, they were basically attached to the pavement and the obnoxious yellow-painted walls of the large room. A quick glance around and you had the feeling that everything was going to collapse at any moment.
Virgil saw some familiar faces, some new ones, but he definitely couldn’t forget about the regulars: his beloved stage deseign group, which were a bunch of students that the teacher trusted him enough to take care of and teach them what they had to do during shows and how to prepare the stage. And next to them some actors from the last three years, Dave, Bonnie, Lukas and Roman.
He and Roman were the only ones brave enough to stick around even during the toughest year of that hellhole, so everyone silently respected them. And just as much as Virgil helped the newcomers in his group, Roman was happy to lend a hand in acting along side the most talented fourth and third years above mentioned.
« Well hello and welcome back here, guys! » Mrs. Michaelis had started, clasping her hands together, she was an English grammar and literature teacher.
After making sure everybody had arrived, they explained that since the week after they were going to see the first years’ “auditions” as they liked to call them, but they were really simply methods to check how promising someone could be at acting.
« I know this may sound shocking, we still can’t believe it- »
« Mostly because normally it takes us a couple of months before choosing a script. » Mrs. Eagan, an ancient Greek and Latin teacher, had interrupted, causing multiple chuckles from the students.
« … As I was saying, yes. We already know the play that we’ll be covering this year, we also have scripts ready for almost everybody. But there’s some news! »
« This year we decided to sign up our group and participate to some kind of challenge! » murmurs began to fill the room, as uneasiness set in Virgil’s stomach. Why make things harder for everybody? Wasn’t it just as good doing a simple show one night and one morning?
« Some, let’s say, “judges” are going to attend our play and afterwards, if they’re satisfied enough, they will let us take our production to the biggest local theater! »
The murmurs transformed into gasps, that theater was placed in the city of their province, getting an invitation was a huge challenge.
« And our play is going to be … » Mrs. Eagan’s eyes met Virgil’s and fixated on them. That’s when he began overthinking. Why was she looking directly at him? That never meant good news. « … Euripides’ tragedy, The Bacchantes. »
Oh.
Oh, fuck.
Only his eyes widened among the confused looks of most of the students. He had studied that play, along side many other ones, in his fourth year. He did truly love them, but damn him if they weren’t already a challenge to portray.
« That’s right Virgil, you know it. » why was also the English teacher giving him his attention? What were they planning, did he have to explain the play to everybody?
All the students turned to face him, some quietly asking what was the plot, some fourth years of his same course demanded to know if it was a difficult topic.
« Easy now, everybody, he’s already been tested last year by Mr. Richardson. » one of the teachers interrupted, walking closer to the spot where Virgil sat, for some reason he had found himself next to the “talented actors group”.
They explained the plot for everybody after that.
« We know it might be real tough, so this year we already agreed on the roles beforehand. Don’t worry, if you didn’t get your time to shine this year, in the next ones you totally will. »
Wait, he wasn’t part of the actors group, why did this have anything to do with him? Why were they still staring at him?
To his relief, the teachers addressed the newcomers first. « We were thinking about giving the role of the chorus to the first and second years, they have long bits, but we can split them instead of making you all recite them, so that you don’t feel too burdened and the role becomes easy for all of you. »
« The roles of the messengers will be given to our third years, messengers are used to explain everything that happens that does not happen on scene. One of the rules for tragedies was that the scene had to take place in the same time and place. Also, they didn’t show blood and/or murders/suicides on scene. They were all narrated. »
« As for our three fourth years. » they looked over Virgil’s shoulder to Dave, Lukas and Bonnie. « Your roles will be Cadmus, Tiresias and Agave. They play a very important part in the whole story, we trust you’ll do a great job. »
« As for our main characters, Pentheus and Dionysus … » they set their eyes on Roman, who looked more expectant than ever.
But then they also shifted their glances to Virgil.
« We were thinking our only fifth years could have their roles as a good way of saying goodbye to them, since this will be their last play. » everybody else was nodding in agreement, Roman was beaming but slightly confused. Wasn’t Virgil part of the stage design group?
In fact, our little emo kid could only look back in disbelief.
« Roman, Virgil, would you like to become a king and a god, respectively? »
What now?
As the beloved actor was about to answer, Virgil interrupted with a shy apology. « I’m sorry, but there must be a mistake, I’m not part of the actors group, I’ve never acted in the past four years, actually. »
« We know Virgil, but we really thought it might be such a nice way of thanking you guys for your contributions all these years. »
Oh yes, you’re right, putting me in a stress condition by making me do something I have no idea about for a big project that could take us to one of the largest theaters of the country is definitely the best choice you could have made.
All he was able to say was a stuttering noise, as they continued with their little speech. « And Roman is such a good actor, he’s going to help you for sure, aren’t you? »
The mentioned boy nodded vigorously, then proceeded to show one of his brightest smiles. « I always come to the rescue of my fellow actors in need. »
Yeah. Amazing. He was stuck with their decision.
« Besides you already probably know each other pretty well by now, so it won’t be a problem! »
The two students looked at each other. The recognizable expressions of two teens that, despite being in the same year and club, had never said a single word to each other apart from when needed during rehearsals.
« … Right. »
« But what about my group then? » Virgil questioned, he was definitely not going to leave them behind just like that.
« You don’t have to worry about them. This year your History of Art teacher will be lending a hand with the stage and volunteered to be the head of the group. »
Right. Mr. Williams, one of the only teachers that were pretty tolerable in his class.
« And look at them. » he did so, and he was met with happy smiles and encouraging faces. « I’m sure they’ll do a good job after four years with you by their side. Right, Anastasia? »
Anastasia was one of the oldest of the bunch, if not one of the wisest and most skilled, sometimes they wondered if she could just do anything that crossed her mind. « You got it! » she leaned in as if to get closer to the older boy. « We’ll be cheering for you Virge! » she concluded, followed by a couple of “Yeah!“s.
Everybody was so joyful and expectant that he couldn’t help but comply, so he decided to simply sigh and reply with nothing.
As the teachers continued with their topics for the meeting, Virgil couldn’t help but have a single thought in his mind.
This is going to be the most awkward thing I’ve ever done in my entire life.
✾✾✾✾
As soon as the meeting came to an end, Virgil was fast to get up and rush towards the dungeon’s stairs that would lead again to the surface. Basically there were two buildings, the school and the gym, linked by a little dungeon were there were all the labs and computer rooms.
He had to get back to the library as soon as he could, or god knows what “you’re late” speech his teacher would have given him. He was always literally on the verge of marking his students as absent if they didn’t show up to the lesson in the exact minute before the bell rang.
Virgil decided to panic about the dumpster fire that had come his way during the meeting after that. One issue at a time. First of all, he had to reach the stairs’ gate and push-
« Hey! Wait for me. »
God, he didn’t have time for this. He kept walking, ignoring the voice behind him and hoping for it to give up and leave him to his well-deserved peace and quiet. At least for three minutes.
As he walked, he found none but Roman himself matching his pace and walking by his side with a curious look. Who could blame him for wanting to be nice?
« You forgot your stuff in your classroom too? » he tried, not a brilliant starter for a conversation, but he had to get something out of the boy.
« No. » cut and dry, that was the only thing that Virgil dared to let escape his mouth.
« Where to, then? »
« The library. »
« Oh, are you waiting for a bus? Maybe I could keep you company. »
« Listen. » they made to a stop as they reached the last floor, not that far off from Virgil’s destination. « Today’s already been as stressful as it is, could you just … go straight to the point? I don’t have much time here. »
It was not like he had meant to sound rude, it wasn’t like it was his purpose either to brush off someone just like that or to see the other boy’s hurt expression. But he had reached a limit in which he didn’t really care-
« Oh, my apologies, then. »
And there was the guilt.
« I was just wondering if we could exchange numbers, if it isn’t uncomfortable for you. I guess we’ll need to hang out in the future. » he tried to sound as confident as he could, but it was as if “awkward” was scribbled all over his face.
« Sure, are you asking me on a date next? » with all the sarcasm injected in his words, he sure as hell wasn’t expecting Roman’s remark.
« Well, if you wouldn’t mind. » a sly smile made its way through the actor’s face, but was soon replaced by a troubled expression when he saw Virgil’s eye roll and sigh.
« Was I … was I too straightforward? I didn’t- »
« You’re fine, calm down. » Virgil quickly took out his phone and unlocked it before passing it to the other student. As he quietly typed after a murmured “alright”, Virgil couldn’t help but wonder if he had ever upset anyone with his bold statements. It wasn’t like this town was open minded, while he seemed … particularly flamboyant.
Before he could finish his thoughts, he had his phone back in his hands and the not-so-much-stranger-anymore was already heading towards his classroom to get his backpack.
« I sent myself a message. » he warned, then he disappeared and reappeared in a matter of seconds, marched down the hall and flashed him a toothy smile while waving his hand.
« Don’t be a stranger, I’ll see you tomorrow! »
Virgil only nodded and found it impossible to take his eyes off of him until the last lock of hair had vanished down the stairs, wondering what had just happened. Maybe that was the magic that worked on his public every year.
He gave a rapid look at the screen of his phone, noticing that the boy had saved himself as “Princey” with a star emoji right next to it.
This time, he entered the library with an amused expression.
✾✾✾✾
Roman kept repeating in his mind that it wasn’t his fault.
Yes, it was Firday. Yes, he had gone the rest of the days without a single word to Virgil, not even when he noticed him in the halls during break or when they either entered or left school. Some days he didn’t even see him.
Yes, he could have texted him. But it felt too weird, yet, they didn’t know each other at all! Plus they didn’t even have the script ready.
Yes, he felt like he had the weight of this play’s success completely on his shoulders and depending on him and still shied away from acknowledging it.
But Virgil kept avoiding him! He couldn’t do much without him.
If he saw him during the ten minutes break, Virgil would walk past him without a second thought as if he didn’t think he needed to talk to him.
Some other times he pretended he didn’t even see him. It was getting tough to even have his attention anymore, as if he had to be added to the mean girls table. He needed a miracle.
And maybe the deities were in his favor that day.
As Roman walked down the path that was made next to the plaza, he noticed a familiar little figure sitting on a bench with a backpack next to him and earbuds in his ears. He was watching in front of him as life flew by and didn’t notice Roman approaching at all.
« Virgil? »
The boy in front of him jerked his head up and took out both of his earbuds; his clothes looked much more worn and randomly put together, as if he had dressed himself in the dark. What got Roman the most was the quantity of dirt that was on them and … was that blood under some of his nails?
Roman dropped his bag on the bench, worry expanding in his chest. « Oh my goodness are you okay? » he made to reach for his hand, only to stop himself just in time to remind him of personal space.
Virgil gave him a confused look and brought his fingers to his eyes, close enough to examine them. « Not again. » he groaned, a huff coming out of his lips.
« Wait, I should have something. »
« You don’t have to, it’s noth- »
« Here! » Roman grabbed a box from his bag triumphantly, he took a couple of plasters and waved them in front of the other.
« Why do you even have so many? »
« What can I say, I’m a clumsy person. »
« Mh. Charming. »
« At least I rescued you! Now, show me your hands. » he ordered, but as soon as he saw Virgil’s mouth open to argue, he was ready to remark « I don’t care if you can do this by yourself, you have literally injured fingers, let me help. »
Seeing that there was no other way out of it, he complied.
As soon as he placed his hands over his fingers, Roman couldn’t help but notice how different their skin tones really were compared to one another, sure the difference was obvious at first glance, but seeing it this close was completely something else. He gently dabbed the fresh blood away with a tissue he had taken out with the box a few instants earlier.
Three plasters and a thank you later, the concerned face came back again and Virgil wanted nothing more than the sweet liberation of death. What was his deal, did he never dig on dirt as a child?
« How did you get hurt? »
Virgil simply pointed behind his shoulders, where Roman could only see a huge pile of dirt resting against a tree. He tilted his head to the side like a confused puppy, a sight the other would have found endearing if only he wasn’t so exasperated and tired.
« I’ve been working all day, Princey. »
Roman smiled at the familiar nickname, but still found confusion in his thoughts. « Aren’t you supposed to be at school? »
« It’s linked to school. Haven’t you heard of the excavations that our school is doing? »
Now that he mentioned that, he had heard a bunch of things, but never really paid attention since it was something that wasn’t related to his course.
Roman attended the Languages course, in which he could learn Spanish and French, other than his mother language, with literature comprehended, and all the experiences linked to it were the cultural exchanges during the third and fourth years.
Virgil, otherwise, was part of the Classical course, meaning that he had signed his death certificate by committing to five years of learning ancient Greek and Latin plus the respective literature as main subjects. But other than that and the famous one week school trip to Greece every three years, Roman had no clue what they did other than study until they couldn’t remember their own names, just like any other student.
Yeah, they couldn’t say their school system was perfect.
« I don’t exactly know every detail. Are you guys doing this? »
« Kind of. What we’re doing is carry on with the work we did the past two years, where we had opened other excavations. Let’s say we’re looking for clues. We’re supervised by an actual archaeologist though. »
« That’s so cool! Did you find any gold? » Virgil wasn’t really expecting such excitement coming from Roman. Apart from the all too familiar question, he often found his interlocutors to be pretty uninterested by the topic.
« No gold, but … remember last Tuesday? » Roman nodded attentively.
« On that morning, during one of Mr. Richardson’s lessons, one of our classmates video-called us saying there was an urgent matter to show us. They had found possibly a Roman coin. » he tried to bite back the smile that threatened to form on his lips at the joyful memory, but nothing could take away that particular twinkle in his eyes.
« Are you serious?! That’s wonderful, what if you find a hidden treasure? »
« Unlikely, but it would be nice. »
« Wow. » Roman breathed out, staring at the scene beside his … new acquaintance? « How did you hurt yourself, anyway? »
« See that pile of dirt? I’ve been scanning every bucket full of soil that was thrown in there. My job was searching in the dirt for possible relics that were missed out while others did the digging. We installed a little assembly line. And running your fingers through that for hours makes you sore I guess. »
« That doesn’t seem very fun, though. »
Virgil shrugged. « I didn’t mind. I like working by myself, especially when the job is as simple as it is important. » And it was true, it wasn’t like the archaeologist put him there because he was just hopeless with the other instruments, every little clue was important and looking for them was a crucial point that can be easily taken care of if you’re a perfectionist.
Plus, the archaeologist seemed to have taken a liking into Virgil, so that didn’t make him feel left out at all.
« Even though, today one of my classmates came to help me. » the boy turned to see that Roman was still listening to him, with no intention of changing the subject. That was new, too.
« You know those terribly annoying ones? He slowed down our chain to the point that he had to argue with this girl that was in dire need of empty buckets while we still had all of them full because he wanted to look through every inch of dirt before handing it out. » he let out a deep sigh, as if he had just been venting for hours.
« That was pretty idiotic, what happened then? »
« Uh, well, we went back to working, just as I was doing before he came to help. »
Roman snorted, imagining the scene in front of his eyes. « So he made a fuss only for it to go back as before and prove him wrong. I’d say he’s pretty amazing. »
« Yeah. » Virgil agreed, « Anyway, sorry for rambling. » he added in a lower tone, while checking his phone for notification, before putting it away quickly.
Roman arched his eyebrow at his words. « As someone who whines constantly, I don’t really think you should worry. »
At least, that succeeded to steal a chuckle from the tired one.
« Did you find anything? » Virgil was really starting to believe this guy couldn’t have a minute of pure silence.
« Well, there’s always a couple of bones, some weird ferric objects, teeth and … » he stopped, remembering the event of the week before.
This time, a wide smile appeared before he could stop it as he searched through his phone’s camera gallery; it was the one thing he was real proud of, possibly the prettiest of his findings.
He handed the phone over to Roman, whose eyes widened at the sight, in front of him he could see a pic of a piece of ceramic with white, brown, yellow and blue decorations, dirt was still covering it, but you could already make out how beautiful it was.
« You found this in here? »
« Yes, it was amazing. I was standing there, » he pointed to a vague direction in front of the dirt pile, excitement rising in his chest as he remembered. « and someone was throwing the dirt on the pile and I recognized the bottom of the piece. We had already found other ceramics and I was hoping it was one too. So I picked it up as soon as I spotted it and there were at least three inches of dirt on top. I moved it away with my thumb and I was met with that decoration. I think I might have yelled. » he leaned in to take another look at the pic, as if never satisfied with it.
Roman certainly didn’t miss how bright he appeared when he was talking about the excavation, all the tiredness was gone and the pain in his whole body caused by eight hours of work was long forgotten. He looked genuinely happy, a contrast to his unusual dark and broody persona.
« Did you choose you university yet? » he had a thought, while handing the phone back, which could have maybe helped the injured boy.
« Jumping a bit? Uh, no, honestly I have no idea. »
« Ever thought of doing something with archaeology? »
« Uhm … » Virgil tapped his fingers on his palm. It wasn’t like he hadn’t considered the possibility in the past, but he had been told that it was probably too hard and maybe too boring from his point of view. On the other hand he truly enjoyed working in the site …
« You still with me, buddy? You don’t have to choose in the next five minutes. »
« Shut up, I was thinking. »
« Your thinking is too loud. »
« And here I was considering you as actually not that bad. »
« I know you secretly admire me. »
« The important thing is you believe that. »
Their wise and profound conversation was interrupted by Virgil’s ringtone going off, he picked up, had a brief talk and tucked the phone away in his pocket.
« My mother’s arrived to pick me up. » he informed, pointing at a car parked a few feet away from them.
They both stood up, but none of them made to move at all.
« Uh, I was thinking … » Roman struggled to find the right words, as if anything he said might offend Virgil at any given moment. « I don’t want to pressure you or anything, but maybe we could meet up sometimes to talk about the play? Or I could start helping you as soon as we get the scripts. »
Virgil made a face, as if he had been trying to forget a bad nightmare and had just been reminded of it. Still, he had no right to escape that any further, and he was already anxious about not being able to make it in time, even before he could start learning his lines. So maybe starting to work on it sooner wasn’t that bad of an idea.
« Sounds good. » he hesitated, not sure how to continue, when an idea sparked in his mind. « Maybe I could give you some insight on the tragedy. »
« That’d be awesome! When are you free? »
Hah. « During week-days I’m busy until five p.m. everyday. At least for another week, when this project will be over. »
That explained why he was still in town at almost six p.m.
« You guys dig everyday? »
« Something like that. We’re divided into two groups and we dig every other day. When we don’t we still have to stay at school and do researches for the final exhibition. »
Roman’s eyes lit up at the last words, he was going to ask him about it the next time the occasion presented itself.
« That sucks. Okay, look, I don’t wanna steal anymore time from your beloved mother, so I’ll text about it to you later, okay? »
« Cool. » Virgil raised his hand and waved it ever so slightly.
Roman returned the good-bye and got back to his task, marching down the sidewalk, but as Virgil had just opened the door of his mother’s car, he remembered to yell “And don’t forget to get some rest, I’m starting to confuse your makeup with your dark circles!”.
Virgil got into the car with an exasperated sigh and found his mother giggling to herself while she looked at him.
« Was that a friend? »
« God I hope not. »
✾✾✾✾
Tuesday came back in a hurry, along with the theater club, some worried and some bored students. Virgil stood in the middle of “time to panic and/or cry” and “if I don’t fall into eternal slumber right now I will burn this building to the ground”.
If he could name some of the most atrocious backstabbers he had ever met, he’d instantly name his teachers: at first they told his class they’d make it easy for them since they were so busy with the project, now they pretended the students had to be more organized with their studying and homework. Tests and interrogations had been made despite them being at least nine hours at school instead of five, some even coming home later than that.
In a word, they didn’t care, it was the students’ fault.
Virgil had his back against the wall, sitting on the top step of the bleacher with his legs close to his chest, the meeting had been starting for a couple of minutes and, of course, he didn’t have anything to do except hating himself and wait for another uneventful hour to pass.
« Hey Gerard Way Too Dark, look what they gave me. »
Or maybe not.
Virgil looked up to be met with Roman standing in front of him with two binders in his hand: the two of them had agreed on meeting up only when school would let them breathe enough to find a single day where they were both free from studying. Which was yet to be a thing.
The beloved actor handed him one of the binders, it read the title of the play, the author and the characters. He didn’t like how his role was the very first one on the list.
« At last. » he dryly commented, flipping the pages quick enough to not read a single actual word out of it.
Roman sat down next to him and examined the first page, as if looking for some kind of unspoken treasure, then he turned to take out a stash of highlighters Virgil had no clue where he kept. He showed them to him, waiting for him to pick a color.
By the looks of them, they seemed brand new and neatly arranged in the colors of the rainbow. Virgil picked out the lilac one, he had always preferred the gentler colors, it made it easier to study with the lights on.
His colleague chose the red one and began going through the pages and highlighting all the lines he had to learn as Pentheus.
Silently, Virgil did the same with the lines Dionysus said, recalling the scenes as he went through them. Though … he noticed there were far too many. He never realized how impossible it looked in his eyes until he had it plainly laid out in front of him.
Great, you’re going to mess this up, you won’t ever be able to do this in time. Plus you’re probably going to forget everything the moment right before going on stage. Who thought this was going to be a good id-
« Are you okay down there? »
He didn’t realize he was rubbing at his face with his hands, while trying to shake off the storm forming in his mind. In doing so, he had also let the marker fall to the wooden step with a clatter, which caught the other’s attention.
« Yeah, ’m just tired. » he managed to let out through his fingers in a muffled sound.
Roman made a humming noise, then proceeded to cast aside all his stuff and let himself relax against the wall. « Then I’d say we call it a day and sleep until it’s time to part ways. »
Virgil looked at him, surprise written all over his face, wasn’t he supposed to work even harder than normal because of the occasion? Either way, he mirrored the boy, pulling up his hood so that he could find some comfort.
« I think I’m too worried about all this mess, » he retorted, gesturing at his script. « to be able to even close my eyes. »
« Then tell me about it. »
He considered the option, he did actually promise him he’d do it before, besides he’d be distracting himself from the impending doom, be actually productive and explaining the tragedy to the actor. A double win for both parties.
« The story is centered around this group of Bacchantes that came from Asia and want to enter Thebes and spread their cult, they’re also guided by a lone nomad that none knows is actually Dionysus, the founder of the cult itself. » he turned to face Roman, in a silent “tell me where I lose you” manner.
« They are stopped by Pentheus, now king of the city, son of Agave and nephew of Cadmus, the founder of Thebes. Tiresias is a famous seer that understands the potential of the cult and invites Cadmus to preach the god with him. They try to reason with Pentheus, but it’s all in vain. In the meantime, while this king is busy insulting the cult, Dionysus makes all the women of the city go mad and follow the Maenads. »
« Payback? »
« More like first warning. » Virgil counted to one on his right hand for emphasis. « After that, Pentheus sent his soldiers to capture him. And they succeeded, he didn’t resist and kept up his act, only to free himself of the chains thanks to his magic. When Pentheus found him, Dionysus pretended he was helped by the god and began charming him until the king gave in. »
« You mean, how he made him dress up as a Maenad? »
« Yes, but not only he did that, he drove him crazy, too. » did anyone else ever notice the slight green spots in Roman’s brown eyes or was it just the trick of the light? Virgil couldn’t tell, so he decided to explain further. « Pentheus claimed to be seeing double and having hallucinations. He was also very careful of his clothes, hair and posture, he wanted to be the perfect Maenad. He tried to convince himself it was for disguise purposes, but in my opinion he was rather enjoying that dress-up. »
« Really? » Roman questioned, he still had to look into his character, the more he knew about him, the better he could portray him. He always took every bit of information he could find, to the point in which he could somehow relate to them or at least be able to link him and the role. That way, he was able to love acting as every single one of them.
« You need to read their last conversation. Even you would say that at first glance. Anyway, the play ends with the Bacchantes shredding to pieces the body of Pentheus. The practice is called “sparagmòs”. After that Agave and Cadmus have a touching scene and it ends there. A bit shocking for her since she just killed her son, but the god made sure the women all saw a beast instead. »
« That’s cruel, though. »
« Princey, he disrespected a fucking god, dying is the least that could happen to him. »
There was the nickname again. And, as if on cue, Roman’s lips twitched into a small smile that disappeared right after. He wasn’t aware of the reason why he didn’t want to get caught, but … did Virgil really not remember?
« He didn’t give him a chance to apologize! »
« Then again, the cult of the Bacchantes includes a ritual where a human needs to be sacrificed. If he had ever been sorry, Dionysus would have probably ordered him to sacrifice himself so that he could be satisfied and purified by his action. »
« Okay, okay. » Roman put his hands up in surrender. « I recognize I’m talking to a smart one over here, I give up. » he pretended he was waving a white flag to his side.
Virgil chuckled at his words. « I’m actually just average, but I can be passionate about some things, too. »
« Just average? I doubt all of your classmates still remember the entire plot of a tragedy and also can provide conspiracy theories. »
« Conspiracy- what are you talking about? »
« You know I’m right, you were totally on the verge of geeking out about this one. C'mon who’s your favorite character? » the actor mocked resting his face on his palms while a sly expression surrounded him.
« I will throw you off the stairs the next chance I have. »
« Good luck with that since you can’t even reach. »
Oh that was the last fucking straw.
Virgil turned his head to look at him in the eyes so rapidly that Roman feared his neck would give in and break right then and there. But the most disturbing image was the rage that was forming around the boy’s aura.
Okay, maybe it wasn’t the wisest thing to-
Virgil surged forward in a sudden movement and the actor jumped away pleading for salvation, it was only when he heard a foreign laugh that he turned around only to be met with the same dark and stormy guy, doubled over himself with laughter, teasing Roman.
« Did you seriously think I was going to attack you? »
« You can be scary sometimes, shut up! » heat began running in Roman’s cheeks out of embarrassment and he pretended nothing happened while Virgil quieted down next to him.
It was exactly in that moment that the meeting was called off.
As Roman followed him to the library, he wondered if that was going to be a regular thing after-
You idiot, this is the last week of your project.
« Oh, by the way. » Virgil stopped at the top of the stairs. « Don’t take it personally if I brush you off or disappear for the next few days, but the exhibition’s coming and I still have no idea what to say. »
« Talking about efficiency. » the actor rolled his eyes, recalling a few other examples he could give on the marvelous organization of teachers.
« Yeah, our teacher gave us tons of useful information. » he dead-panned, approaching the library’s doors.
« I will forever respect you for putting up with Mr. Richardson. »
That was able to get a chuckle out of Virgil.
« See you around, Pentheus. »
And with that, Roman was left walking home by himself with the warm feeling of having made a new possible friend spreading in his chest.
✾✾✾✾
It was Saturday morning when he noticed the fliers hanging around school. They showed a bunch of excavation pics and the subject of an archaeological exhibition centered around the school’s town. Roman took note of the date: it was exactly that same day!
So that was how he found himself during afternoon pacing around the plaza and stepping into an old tower, where a little crowd of at least fifteen people of all ages were standing and listening attentively to a student. There was only a little group of them, which he figured was because the exhibition took place multiple times during the week.
He just wondered if he had been lucky enough to find …
As he made his way through the front, so that he could see all the materials and boards exposed he heard the female voice say « Now I will turn it over to my classmate, Virgil! »
As soon as he heard his name, he followed her gaze and finally met an unusual sight: instead of the usual hoodie, he wore a black button up shirt and skinny dark blue jeans that might as well have been mistaken for the same other color. So he did know how to be fancy if he wanted.
Before he began explaining, he noticed Roman standing right next to their theater teachers and bit back a smile. He didn’t recall inviting him, actually he hadn’t wanted anyone he knew to witness him mess everything up as he was used to do. So what was he doing there?
Virgil welcomed everybody once again, then turned over to all the materials exposed.
And when he started talking, Roman was enthralled.
He didn’t know if it was the way the words rolled down his tongue, how he brushed the objects as if they were sacred treasures that would turn into dust at the slightest touch, or the sparkle in his eyes when he took in everybody’s attention and curiosity.
But there was a thing he did recognize: it was passion, that was definitely what he was radiating, the one emotion he knew all too well which helped him getting his public hanging at the edge of their seats.
And this time, he was the hooked one.
The two locked eyes multiple times, Virgil was surprised enough to find comfort in having someone to constantly smile at him, or in Mrs. Eagan’s nodding, in all those mouthed “you’re doing great”. He couldn’t stop going back at them everytime he looked up.
Before anyone knew it, his time was over and the group moved onto the last part of the exhibition, which was outside; the crowd followed the last student to the site that was still open and the remaining students in the room sighed with relief as Mr. Richardson followed them too for the final thanks.
Some minutes and a standing ovation later, Roman was already back into the small room as bright as ever, walking toward his favorite little archaeologist.
Virgil paced towards him at the same time, hissing a “what are you doing here?” while a small grin let itself spread on his face.
With no warning and an abrupt move, Roman’s arms had already wrapped themselves around the other boy’s upper chest, lifting him a little in the process.
Well, that was definitely new.
Not being used to such excitement, Virgil was only able to awkwardly return the hug after an initial moment of vacillation. Seeing his energy on stage was a thing, experiencing it like that was completely something else, but deep in his heart he knew it wasn’t a habit he wouldn’t have liked to adapt to.
Wait, what was that thought coming from? Why would he have to adapt to anything, he was just going to help him through acting and that was it.
Still, a new friend wasn’t a bad idea either …
« You did amazing! » was what Virgil heard after being released from the embrace, but not quite completely as Roman was still holding onto his arms.
He blinked a few times. « What are you talking about, I messed up and started stuttering at one point- »
« Oh shut up and let me compliment you, I didn’t even remember you did, king of modesty. »
« More like king of self-deprecation. »
« Can you stop for once in your life? »
Right in the short amount of time they weren’t talking, a single line caught their attention.
« Look at all this trash. »
What?
« Yeah, these are all so obviously fake. »
Thunderstorms.
Thunderstorms and lightning, howls of rage formed in Virgil’s chest, burning in a bonfire which heat traveled through his blood and reached his eyes only to darken them with fury.
His body stiffened, he wanted to scowl at them and tell them how wrong they were, just how dare them invalidate all the hard work of three weeks?
« Oh, Virgil! » Roman seemed to distract him, but he had a plan in mind as he moved both of them close to the materials table. « Remember that day I visited you while you guys were digging? »
But there wasn’t any- was he onto something? « Oh, yeah, you were walking home from school and you decided to stop. » he played along, as his friend nodded, making sure to be heard by the rude couple.
In the meantime, one of the students had gone out to update their teacher on the situation.
« Yeah, when you found that beautiful ceramic piece! » Roman turned to recognize the piece he had seen in the pic he had been shown, then pointed it. « Is it that one? »
« Yes, I can pick it up for you. » Virgil did so as he spoke.
« Wow, it’s even more gorgeous. »
« We had a hard time cleaning everything, so we tried to do the best job we could. Getting dirt out of bones is also … not super easy. »
« You guys are awesome. » Roman kept glancing around the room arranged for the exhibition, while the now embarrassed couple decided to leave under the incinerating stare of Mr. Richardson who had just came in to witness the situation.
Everybody in the room went to either grin or laugh inside, while the two boys shared a high five.
After making sure everything was under control, the teacher decided to begin cleaning up the place, so all the guests that stayed to chatter were dismissed.
« Hey, uh … » Virgil struggled to get out his voice, a little for being tired, a little because in moments of shyness his tone would go out as nothing more than a simple mutter. « Thank you for earlier and … also for coming, I guess. »
« Both of them were my utter pleasure. » Roman had a thing for being extra, and if he chose that aesthetic, he better had to stick to it by doing a theatrical bow at his friend.
« You are a nerd. »
« With style! »
« Whatever helps you sleep at night. » Virgil turned around to face the tower and began walking away. « See you around, Princey. »
There went another one.
Roman had to giggle quietly to himself, every single time his mind traveled to that one particular moment back in the first year when-
« You know, this is what I was talking about. »
He felt a presence walking by his side, suddenly, and found Mr. Eagan glaring at him with an almost nostalgic look.
« I’ve been telling him for years that he has the acting potential. » she sighed while Roman simply nodded along. « He’s been getting better, you see this isn’t the first exhibition they do, I’ve seen them all. »
« Oh, really? »
« Yes. And you can totally sense how much emotion he’s putting, you can tell he’s invested. »
« I agree, I’ve had the occasion to see that. »
« And honestly I feel bad for forcing him into this play thing … but I’m sure he’s going to shine. I’m so proud of him. » she smiled at herself, then stopped in her tracks and looked up at her student. « And I’m also sure you’ll do a good job. Bring out his talent, Roman. In your own special way. »
He remained speechless for a moment, just how much trust did these teachers actually have in both of them? He found it endearing, he felt almost as if they had some kind of motherly appreciation towards them.
« Thank you. We’ll work very hard on this one, you’ll see! »
They exchanged their farewells and Roman headed home, this time by himself, having all kinds of thoughts in his mind.
But most of all, he felt worried.
All of a sudden, it seemed like a blank page was being replaced in his head instead of all the knowledge apprehended through his life.
He had no idea how to start helping Virgil.
✾✾✾✾
Despite the initial awkwardness, things had begun to go way better than both of them had imagined. The occasional staying late after the theater meetings had allowed them to grow closer, so much that they at least shared a few words during break every day at school. And that was a huge effort for Virgil as he preferred to stay in class where almost none hanged around and simply scroll through his phone, waiting for the last two dreadful hours of lessons.
And, well, random texts weren’t late to arrive to the party, too.
Princey: okay but can we talk about what an idiot Pentheus is?
Vee: this is a weird midnight text to get, but go off I guess
Princey: I’m serious! Come on, like why don’t you just let people do their thingsss
Vee: Oh you’re taking this to heart, alright
Princey: Yeah?? Am I not supposed to be emotionally invested in my own play?
Vee: You’re talking as if you’ve written it
Princey: Maybe I did
Vee: gasp are you Euripides reincarnated
Princey: The one and only
Vee: My apologies sir, you have all the rights to whine about your own plot
Vee: I also have no clue how you know english
Princey: It’s the muses’ power!
Vee: Melpomene?
Princey: Bless you
Vee: Wow okay, go to sleep
Princey: Sleep is for the weak
Vee: And you’re gonna be weak in the morning so it really doesn’t matter

« This is unacceptable! I’m sorry, our friendship has to end here, I’m leaving. »
« I’m telling you, I have my reasons. »
« You can’t just simply dislike Hercules! »
Virgil sighed in defeat and resigned in his plastic seat; Christmas holidays had been around for a week, new year’s was already approaching and two youngsters had decided to spend an afternoon together with the excuse of reading some lines out of their scripts and helping each other out.
It wasn’t really the first time they did that, plus with the arrival of winter it was a nice excuse to be comforted by a warm cup of hot chocolate with whipped cream.
Just like they were doing in that moment, only that it seemed that they had completely forgotten about the play because of how much they were invested in other topics. Such as, obviously, Disney movies.
« It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s just … so wrong. »
« Oh my- it’s not Percy Jackson, it’s Disney, they’re allowed to take some creative liberties. »
« I know, but I didn’t watch it as a child, I saw it recently- »
« How dare you. »
« -shut up. What I mean is: my studies have ruined its likability. »
Roman closed his eyes and put his hands together in front of his face in an exasperated manner. « Then let’s hear these freaking reasons, enlighten my blindness, o wise one! »
Virgil couldn’t help but smirk as the other one huffed. « First of all, thank you for the compliment. »
« But, see, the first thing that got me was the character of Phil. The actual Philoctetes wasn’t a satyr, he was a hero that fought in the Trojan war who also happened to be Hercules’ friend at some point. »
« Well, they were linked in the end! »
« Let me finish. All the deeds that Phil claimed to have made? All those heroes he trained? Bullshit. Everything was done by Chiron, the only wise and composed centaur of greek mythology. And like centaurs were thought as savage beasts, satyrs were always linked to Dionysus and described as libidinal creatures. Philoctetes would have probably felt insulted. »
« Your studies may have ruined your view but you’re ruining my childhood right now. » Roman muttered the words as a childish pout formed on his lips.
« Ah, also Megara was a city, not a person. » said Virgil with nonchalance.
« WHAT. » the wide-eyed actor jumped in his seat and surged forward a little, blinking a few times.
Without expecting it, Virgil’s composed face contorted with a snort, which then grew into giggles and then again transformed into a genuine and amused laughter that couldn’t stop.
He tried to breathe in. « Princey, you- » he cut himself off as another wave of giggles hit him, so he held one hand up as if to tell him to wait until he could properly compose himself.
And Roman knew he otherwise would have felt offended, or at least in a playful way, he knew normally he would have instantly asked what was the matter. But he couldn’t really shake off the feeling of wanting to protect and carve this picture into his memory until it was the only thing he could remember.
And he truly wanted to share that angelic laughter, participate to the mirthful moment, yet he found himself solely staring at the unusual sight in pleasant disbelief at how stunning that scene was.
He could merely twitch his lips upwards and consider how much he adored hearing the nickname in such an entertained voice.
Something inside Roman clicked as Virgil finally gained enough breath, and he knew he was done for.
« Sorry, uh, » he was finally able to breathe out. «  I was actually messing with you. She did exist. »
He looked him in the eyes and all Roman could think was “finally”.
After a beat, noticing the other didn’t respond and assuming he was upset or something, he continued. « Though she and their children were afterwards killed by Hercules according to some. Others think he killed his children and Megara compelled him to commit suicide. Awful stories for great heroes, I guess. »
Roman, who was still starstruck, was only able to comment. « Breathtaking. »
Virgil made a face and lowered the cup he was raising to his lips. « What? »
« Uh … what? No I was just- the TV! Behind you, yes. I was commenting that. »
The confused one turned ever so slightly to quickly glance at the old black screen facing his back. « Alright, I won’t question your weird obsession with old style televisions. »
Nailed it.
Their discourse went on escalating to different topics, but never once brushing the fact that they met to keep up their theater practice, like good procrastinating students. It wasn’t like they were avoiding it on purpose, for the first time they felt like spending quality time with each other was their main priority.
« Okay, listen, Tripping in the Darkness. I went on a cruise once and even there I was able to reveal my beautiful voice. »
« So sorry for the passengers. »
« I should have left you outside freezing in the cold. » Roman scoffed after a beat.
« But you didn’t. »
« I’m starting to reconsider. »
« We both know you would never do it. »
« I forgive you only because you’re cute. » oh wait, oh wha- Roman immediately hid behind his cup, drinking the last remaining of his warm beverage. He hoped that the heat would rush off of his cheeks by the time he had finished.
« Wow, I’m flattered. » Virgil didn’t leave his sarcastic tone and didn’t seem to have noticed anything different, until he snorted out loud when he was met with Roman’s face after he lowered the cup.
Roman’s heart sank, was he still blushing? Was he already onto him? That was bad, that was-
« You got … » Virgil’s voice got back to being amused and he gestured towards his face. Oh, great, he had a chocolate-stained face now. Just what he needed.
« Where? Is it gone? » he frantically kept on asking as he wiped around his mouth and cheeks with his bare hand.
His friend shook his head. « Not even close. »
On a scale on one to Roman’s worst embarrassing moments compilation, he would have probably found himself on top of that very ranking, because after that Virgil simply reached for the container on the little table.
« For starters, you take a tissue. » while he did so, Roman could only watch as his friend  gently rubbed away the spot on the bridge of his nose. Oh. The cup did touch it earlier.
Alright that was awkward and I’m stupid, let’s move on.
But no, his brain had decided to short circuit and leave him to his impulsiveness; out of the blue, he grabbed Virgil’s wrist before he pulled away completely.
Virgil blinked, confused once again by his behavior. « Uh, what’s up? »
That’s when Roman’s mind finally snapped to reality and, of course, he panicked to find the best excuse he could permit, so he slid both of his hands to cage Virgil’s own. « You’re super cold! » he noticed, lowering their hands to rest on the table.
« Yeah? It’s minus degrees outside? And I’m often anxious? »
« Oh, right. » why was he feeling more sympathetic than usual? « Then, I shall protect you from both! »
« By holding my hand? »
« By making sure your heat level is within the parameters! »
« Alright, Doc. I’ll trust you. »
That was how they ended up holding hands for the rest of the day without even realizing until they had to part.
« You sure you don’t want me to accompany you to the parking lot? »
« I’m fine, don’t mind. »
They were standing out of the cafe to exchange their goodbyes, about to head for different streets and eventually go home.
« You know, you didn’t really have to pay for me, I’m not broke. » Virgil talked in little puffs of condensed air, hands in his pockets and trying to shake off the cold stinging sensation that pierced his skin.
« Oh, soft you now, »
« Is that a fucking Hamlet quote? »
« -it is my duty to ensure your well-being. Plus I know you hate talking to cashiers, so. »
« You’re the worst, but thank you. » Virgil rolled his eyes. « I still feel like I owe you one now, though. »
Well you could just kiss me whenever you feel like, a part of Roman’s brain noted. Uhm, what the fuck is your problem? Responded the other.
« Nah, I’ll probably forget it by the next time we talk. » he admitted, ignoring the weird thoughts that were happening in his mind, a mind that needed to shut up for at least a single second.
Virgil muttered an “alright” and was about to turn around and wave him off, like he always did, when he was confronted by a simple demand.
« Uh, can I, like, hug you? »
He stopped in his tracks, considering for a moment, before a “sure” escaped his lips and he started nodding.
Roman stepped closer and wrapped his arms around his chest, content and making a little pleased sound as the other returned the hug. He wasn’t sure why he was being so uncertain that day.
« Bye, Virge! » he called out as he stepped away from his friend and began walking home.
Virgil waved in return and immediately took out his phone and earbuds: after hitting shuffle he was fast to recognize the song by the first chords.
Acceptance, huh? He had discovered their song back in middle school. Boy, did he try so hard to be edgy. Still, certain songs weren’t really that bad.
Oh no, this couldn’t be more unexpected.
He had just made to turn the corner of a mansion’s fence when a realization struck him. And he was still subtly smiling because of it.
He somehow hadn’t been aware of it in the moment, probably because of their distracting conversation.
The lyrics went by in his ears and he almost didn’t even notice the words flowing in his head as that little memory of their afternoon occupied his mind.
Could this be out of line? To say you’re the only one breaking me down like this.
Roman had been brushing his thumb against his skin for almost all the time he had been holding onto his hand earlier.
He also had hugged him a little bit tighter than how he remembered back in October. And he was very excited too, that day.
And yeah, the majority of sane people would have found the situation simply nice or just a normal friendly action. But Virgil?
Come to think of it, I’m aching.
Yeah, he was already burying his face in his hoodie. God, was that heat rushing at his cheeks? Did his body really want to make it any more obvious?
On account of my transgression, will you welcome this confession?
Oh god, oh fu-
Virgil exhaled deeply and rubbed at his face with his hands, an unwelcome warm feeling spreading in his chest, it felt like as if someone was lighting a fire in there, not caring for the emotional damage that they were about to cause. Like a firework sent up in the middle of the night only to startle you enough to wake you up in a cold sweat and thumping heart.
Keep me hanging on so contagiously.
Virgil abruptly ripped the earbuds away from his ears and stuffed everything in his pockets as he leaned on his school’s gate, staring at the parking lot in front of him. His parents had yet to arrive to pick him up.
He had enough time to calm down.
« Well, I’m fucked. »
Maybe.

It is widely known and said that time flies by quickly when you’re either having fun, doing nothing or during the holidays. Students had reluctantly returned to their daily routines of lessons, homework and studying, trying to frame everything in the best way, so that they had at least some time to breathe between their tasks.
January, sadly, meant that the end of the first term was approaching inexorably  and the teachers suddenly realized they needed more marks than they actually had from every student in a matter of two weeks. Everything for the initial report cards that, in the end, didn’t matter at all compared to the final one.
Thanks to February, students would have some time to breathe and re-gain strength until March, which was another wave of tests in preparation for the real monster: May.
For the last years, though, February also meant that they were going to get more information about which subjects they had to focus on the most for their final exams, which could only be linked to chaos, panic and that anxious but subtle feeling that the big moment was coming.
Thankfully, the weekend existed and with it also places for poor unfortunate souls to release stress and distract themselves from the imminent danger.
And that is how we follow two fellow individuals in distress who had decided upon spending their first free time in weeks walking around town and having a nice chat during night. At least before they ended up in a little desolated playground, their scripts in front of their faces, definitely acting more dramatically than needed.
« Do you perform the rites by night or by day? » Roman leaned on one of the street lamps, permitting him to read his line and, at the same time, he widely gestured with his free hand.
« Mostly by night; darkness conveys awe. » Virgil emphasized his second line with such an ominous tone that made his friend giggle lightly.
« Oh my, I’m thrilled. »
« Okay but you’ve got to admit it’s actually a cool phrase to say. »
« Maybe if we were serious enough, my darkling. »
After Virgil’s usual “shut up and keep reading” (which he had been using for the past fifteen minutes, mind you), Roman complied. « This is treacherous towards women, and unsound. » his voice sounded almost offended, his hand trailed over his heart in a fist.
Virgil bit back a grin at the sight. « Even during the day someone may devise what is shameful. »
« This vile quibbling settles your punishment. » the taller one took a few steps forward, pointing his finger on his friend, accusatory.
« Your ignorance and impiety toward the god will settle yours. » Virgil snarled, imitating the other in pointing fingers.
Roman gasped way more dramatically than needed and placed a hand on his chest, eyes wide with disbelief. « How bold the Bacchant is, and not unpracticed in speaking! »
His acting partner intook some breath, before stopping, narrow eyed, while he read his words.
« What, is something wrong? » Roman demanded, eyes scanning the next lines before looking up.
« This is so fucking gay. » he admitted, a smile playing on his lips as he contemplated the possibility of a different turn of events in the plot.
« Dionysus and Pentheus, but make it gayer. »
« Than it already is? That’s a challenge. »
« I have something in mind. » Virgil didn’t like the mischievous look on Roman’s face. « Keep going. »
« Tell me what I must suffer; what grievous harm will you do to me? » he hadn’t noticed how fast the other was to reach him, the previous grin was still imprinted on his lips. His pace faltered only a bit, but didn’t stop when he was a few steps from his Dionysus.
« First, I will cut off your delicate curls. »  how Roman could change his tone from a mocking one to a warm and clear one, would forever be an unsolved mystery to the world. He proceeded to raise a hand to Virgil’s hair and slowly moved his bangs to the side, a knuckle brushing his cheek afterwards.
« My locks are sacred; I am growing them for the god. » Virgil played along and started to remember the lines, a result of their persistent reading every week. Not that he could really tear off his eyes from the looming figure in front of him.
« Next, give me this thyrsos from your hands. » other steps forward and Roman had trapped him against some metal bars he wasn’t aware of.
« Take it from me yourself; this is the wand of Dionysus I am bearing. » with no warning, Roman pressed his right hand, where the actual thyrsos would have been, to the bars and locked their fingers together. He leaned in even further, making sure Virgil could notice the sly sparkle in his half-lidded eyes.
« Last, I will guard your body deep in the dungeons. » his other hand gripped the bars right next to the boy’s head, literally trapping him. He had to stay in character, after all.
The leaning was slow this time, but didn’t seem to be stopping at any moment and Virgil could swear he felt his body move without his consent.
Inches apart, and Roman’s lips twitched upward. He stopped.
Virgil snorted.
Next thing they knew they were both bursting out laughing like they had just heard the best joke their favorite comedian had ever made.
« That was- » Virgil tried, after they both collapsed to the ground, weak in their knees for too much hilarity. « That was the stupidest thing I’ve ever done in my entire life. »
« When Pentheus and Dionysus couldn’t get any gayer. » Roman commented through an almost hysterical laughter, while part of his brain began to shut down in a ohgodwhathasjusthappenediwasabouttobutthenididntandisthisthereallife state. An everyday situation to which he was used to, of course.
« Actually, » his friend began, taking a deep breath to calm himself down. « Greek gods are very open about their sexuality. »
« Oh, yeah. Wasn’t it Zeus himself that tried to f- » Roman was instantly shushed to silence, while a pained expression grew on the other’s face.
« We don’t talk about him. »
Fair enough. They had been in comfortable silence for quite a while, sitting on the ground and enjoying the void of the night as the only sources of light showed them only certain features and details of the objects around them.
« Hey, Virge? »
The mentioned boy almost jumped at the sudden sound. « Yeah? »
Roman’s expression, fixated on something ahead of him, was somewhat between focused and in a daze.
« Did you know the teachers wanted to keep your hair growing for the play? »
« What. »
« They decided against it when they realized I actually had to cut them away during the show. »
« Why are you telling me this right now? »
« I was just thinking about … » Roman’s words lingered, as if he thought about whether or not he could disclose a secret.
About me, please say about me. Virgil shook off the bizarre thought while he waited for a response. Are you fucking kidding me? Part of his mind answered. Didn’t all those past experiences teach you anything?  Virgil found it harder to concentrate on Roman’s words now, he creased his eyebrows as if he were having a headache.
Those were in elementary school and middle school, you idiot. The other side responded. They were still valid experiences!
« Ohi. » Roman waved his hand in front of the other’s face. « Are you on this planet, sir? »
« Sadly, I still am. »
Roman rolled his eyes at that. « Dang, here I thought the aliens had gotten you. »
« You wish. »
« Anyway, I was about to get going since it’s getting pretty late even for a Saturday night. » he pulled himself on his feet, then smiled brightly and turned to his friend. « Lift home? »
« Thank god you exist. »
And Roman did really try hard to act cool and all, but he found out he couldn’t prevent his face from turning at least the weakest tint of red.
✾✾✾✾
They didn’t know how it was possible, but they made it through until April.
The last two months were a train wreck of multiple meetings between Roman’s wonderful school trip abroad, additional tests, the first exams simulations, and things getting very serious at theater club. The designs, scenes, props and costumes were all coming along neatly and, with everybody giving their all, the excitement for the play could be felt through thin air. Roman was thrilled and he thought that there wasn’t nothing else that could possibly be better than that kind of feeling.
Virgil begged to differ.
He was standing in the middle of the external part of the front of the school with a couple of other classes of his same course; they all had backpacks on their backs and a luggage held close.
Virgil was almost bouncing, unable to stay still, he started tapping his fingers on the handle of his own luggage. The anticipation was killing him, how could everybody else be so calm and casual? They were about to leave for a trip to Greece!
It was the most wanted and awaited of school trips for their course, it happened every three years and not only students were given the opportunity to confront and visit places and subjects they had studied, but also thanks to certain lovable teachers the weirdest and funniest things occurred in those trips. It was a dream come true, finally at their fingertips.
He really didn’t want to seem mean, but Virgil couldn’t stop looking at the time on his phone while one of his closest classmates trailed off talking about how energetic they felt for the trip ahead.
Until …
« Wine god! » what the f-
Virgil and his friend looked up simultaneously to be met with the vision of Roman waving one arm from the top of the external stairs and afterwards quickly running down towards them.
« I didn’t see you anywhere this morning! » he was still half-running when he spoke those words, as he reached them. He put his hands on Virgil’s shoulders.
« We didn’t really leave until now, we had a test. »
His eyes widened « What the heck? Right before a trip? »
Virgil shrugged. They had chosen it was better to do it before than afterwards.
« Well, anyway, I wanted to properly say goodbye and wish you a good travel! »
« Thank you, buddy. You really didn’t have to, aren’t you having a lesson right now? » Virgil raised one eyebrow, uncertain.
Roman showed him one of his stupidly charming grins and put his hands on his hips. « I simply asked to go to the bathroom. »
« I hate to break it to you, Roman, but this isn’t exactly the right way. »
« Oh, shut up. You know I wanted to see you before you headed off for the seven seas! »
« We’re literally traveling through the same sea, what are you tal- »
« It’s been a long day, let me have this. »
Virgil tilted his head to the side, they had been in school for only three hours, what exactly did that make it a long day?
His thoughts were broken by the thundering of one of his teachers who announced that everybody had to get ready since they were going to leave in a matter of minutes.
« Alright then. » Roman murmured with a slightly sad sigh, he quickly replaced his defeated expression with a smile, careful not to be discovered. « I’ll have to leave now. »
C'mon say something. His heart begged for mercy as Virgil looked back up at him and he saw two bright gray irises, the sun’s rays hitting them from the side just enough to make them look like literal crystals.
Anything would do, take your chance, tell him!
His eyes fell to the figure right next to them, still standing there and witnessing every one of their interactions. Well, maybe next time.
Roman leaned forwards and wrapped his arms around his friend’s shoulders in a tight embrace that was soon returned a bit more weakly around his waist. He felt like he was holding on him for dear life more than anything.
His hand trailed at the nape of his neck and stroked his hair for some instants, in which Virgil tightened his own hug and laughed silently on his shoulder.
« I’m not leaving forever, you know? The time zone is not even that different. »
« I know but I’ll be lonely! »
« We both know that’s not true. » Virgil released the other and patted his shoulder. « You’ll be fine and you can text me whenever you want when I’m not in the ferry. »
Roman let out a fake annoyed huff, but smiled anyway. « Have a safe trip, Virge. » he backed away, still facing him while waving a hand.
Then he turned to the other boy.
« Keep an eye on him for me, okay? »
« Will do! »
At this, Roman sprinted away towards his class and could only smirk wider when Virgil called him out with a “Oh shut up, Princey.”
Virgil met his friend’s all-knowing look as he turned away from the spot where he saw Roman disappear, not realizing he had a soft expression written over all of his face.
« Why are you- no. Listen, it’s not what you- »
His friend ignored him, dancing around him. « You’re doing flips, read my lips, you’re in love! » he sang, while Virgil buried his face in his hands since for some godforsaken reason when he was embarrassed he tended to have a weird smile on his face that made him completely implausible. He hated that, it only made people tease him even further.
Which was exactly what happened in this situation, even after Virgil had smacked him behind the head lightly and started to get going towards the bus station as their teachers had instructed.
