Riverdale 7x20 - Goodbye, Riverdale (Spoilers)
Jesus, this was depressing. After seven years, Riverdale comes to an end. And I can absolutely guarantee that nobody ever expected it to end like this. That being said, while this is not the ending I would have chosen, I also can't say I dislike this ending. We watched these character going through year after year of hell and the fact that most of them have a good life and there is a happy-ish ending to this...well, I'm content with it. Riverdale, for me, probably will be the first four seasons, but I don't hate this ending.
Anyway, we start with an Eight Six year old Betty who's learned Jughead has passed away. Betty is now the last of the gang to survive. Betty wants to visit Riverdale one last time and her granddaughter promises to take her there the next day. That night Betty is visited by Angel/Writer Jughead who takes her back to the last day of high school so she can see her friends one last time. During these moments we find out what happened to all of the characters. And I'm just going to go through this real quick.
Ms. Andrews will fall in love with a woman who will live in the with Ms. Andrews until she passes away. Polly will end up having her twins (Juniper and Dagwood). Alice will eventually divorce Hal (I think, my cable screwed up and I missed part of this), become a flight attendant, and marry someone else.
During junior year of high school, Fangs records a hit single and is able to convince Midge's parents to let him marry her. Their happiness is short lived as, not long after high school, Fangs goes out on tour and is killed in a bus accident. Midge and her daughter will live off the royalties of Fang's two songs (right).
Pop's apparently dies before the kids graduate high school. That's the grave Betty is visiting. The writers clearly are choosing violence here.
Clay and Kevin move to Harlem together. Clay becomes a professor at Columbia (I think) and Kevin opens his own off Broadway production. Kevin will die of old age in his sleep and Clay will pass away a few weeks later sitting on a park bench.
Cheryl and Toni move west and live a more bohemian life. They have a son named Dale (after Riverdale). They will live a long and happy life together.
Reggie will go on to play basketball for the Lakers and then become the coach at Riverdale High. He has two sons who will run the Mantle used car lot. Reggie was buried in Duck Creek.
As for the core four, well they all decide during senior year to all just date each other. Yup. Well, maybe, as we never see anything happen between Archie and Jughead. After high school....
Veronica moves back to LA and becomes a big movie mogul. I don't think it's directly said, but it seems like she was the first of the four to go. I does seem like Betty, at least, looses touch with her over time.
I'm not going to go into the last Barchie scene. While I didn't particularly like that couple, what the writers did in that scene was nothing short of sadistic to those fans. But one could argue that same was done to Bughead and Varchie fans in season four. Anyway, Archie will go out west and find a woman that he decides to settle down with. He lives a long, good life with her and, when he dies, he's buried next to his father.
Jughead will create Jughead's Madhouse Magazine (Mad Magazine) and had a successful life as a writer/editor. He never marries.
Betty also creates her own magazine. (And late '60s/early '70s Betty's look is my favorite Betty look). Betty never married, but she did adopt a daughter. Which she considers her legacy, her family.
Anyway, Angel/Writer Jughead takes Betty back to the present. The next day, Betty's granddaughter takes her to Riverdale. As they pull into Pop's parking lot, the building is for sale, she discovers Betty has died.
But then young Betty steps out of a car as she has been transported to an functioning Pop's Restaurant. Jason is at the door (yep, the actor is back). And everyone is there (well, of the cast that still worked on the show). And as the story ends, Betty joins the other three at the table and in the Hereafter.
Like I said, not the way I imaged the show would ever end. Not the way I would have ended it. Still, it was a very bitter sweet ending. I shed some tears and, yeah, part of me is sad to see it end.
Of course, that part of me will soon be knocked unconscious by my sanity....

So. I received an anonymous message today with a link to a post made by a Bughead shipper (who I won't be naming), which listed all of the reasons they hate Tabitha. I thought we could all have a read, shall we? I don't usually do posts like this but this just makes my blood boil.
Number one.
Tumblr media
Firstly, Pop's is her diner. Her grandpa put her in charge and she legally owns it, so she had every right to say that! Also, I think it's a perfectly reasonable request of hers to ask him to not use up valuable space in her establishment to just sit, use the free wifi and order coffee without paying for it. Aside from that she didn't know him. She didn't know his history with the diner, who he was or what his deal could be. I seriously wonder, what would you do if you owned a restaurant and a random, sad looking guy walked in and sat there all day, not buying anything?
Tabitha also didn't treat him badly. She made a few very fair requests, then ended up covering for him with debt collectors and offering him a job, simply because she sensed he needed it. If that doesn't scream "good person" I don't know what does.
Number two.
Tumblr media
Need I remind you that Tabitha said no initially regarding the shrooms, and was very kind about setting boundaries with Jughead? She communicated in a mature, adult way and I think she should be commended for that.
Furthermore, the only reason she agreed to watch him while tripping was because he already went ahead and bought the mushrooms, and she likely figured he'd be safer doing them with her watching over him than alone. And if you think for a second that his pretending to date him in the Jessica situation was weird or creepy, you clearly haven't watched the same scene I have. Jughead's face screams discomfort. Think of it as the Riverdale equivalent of pretending to be in a relationship with your friend at a bar, so a persistent person they aren't interested in stops asking for a hookup?
Number three:
Tumblr media
This wasn't Tabitha's fault, or a reason to hate her?
Betty was the one who handed over the manuscript, and while it wasn't her fault either (both of them had been drugged, give them a break), to demonise Tabitha for explaining this to Jughead is ridiculous!
Number four.
Tumblr media
Ok, firstly, to imply that Tabitha somehow coerced Jughead into wanting to become sober is absolutely ridiculous? I won't talk too deeply about alcoholism here because as somebody who has never experienced it/known someone who has, that really isn't my place. But I will say, it is clear that Jughead deeply wanted to become sober. He was miserable, and really not living his best life. And as with most mental health issues, it's very hard to recover alone. He is so lucky to have somebody like Tabitha there for him, who can encourage him to attend his meetings, let him know that she cares and be a confidant. You said it yourself- she helped him in the end.
As for the thing about Tabitha calling him out for having alcohol on his breath... She did it in such a kind and understanding way, a way that encouraged him to open up to her and agree to take further steps in his recovery. I think he really needed that little push. I say this from personal experience, having someone close to you gently call you out on something going on in your life can really help you to understand it better yourself.
Also, how is putting your hand on somebody else's immediately flirting? I do that to my friends all the time, as a gesture of comfort, to show that I'm there for them and feel that we have a strong relationship. Although we now know how Jabitha have progressed, this was something that could very much have been interpreted platonically.
Finally, that night Tabitha went to Betty's house to check on her, for both Betty's and Jughead's sakes, and walked around a dangerous highway with her all night, in order to keep her safe. If that isn't immensely kind of her, I don't know what is.
Number five.
Tumblr media
Do you understand how a relationship/friendship works? Both people actually have to support and be there for each other.
I'm so glad we got this moment, of Jughead showing up for Tabitha in a way that emphasised how mutual the trust between them is. He can be vulnerable with her, and her with him.
Being an alcoholic wasn't and will never be Jughead's whole personality. Are you saying, that because he has an addiction, he can't go out for dinner with somebody who has been incredibly kind to him, for one night? Sure, that makes a lot of sense. What's so different about him supporting her through this one, hard meal, to her being there for him for weeks on end? Huh?
Let's also not forget the fact that it was Jughead who asked Tabitha out. And since it was his garage, he was probably the one who invited her there too. You know what? I don't think the issue here has anything to do with Tabitha, or Jughead's wellbeing. I just think that maybe you can't stand the idea of seeing Jughead with anyone but Betty. Did I get it right?
Number six.
Tumblr media
I'm so confused, I can't see whether this person does or doesn't like/care about Jughead. One minute it's all "why would you ask an alcoholic to move in with you, that's doomed" and then next it's "he needs to heal, my poor little friend".
Anybody who really cares about Jughead's wellbeing would understand how loving, supportive and kind Tabitha has been to him, and see the trust that has formed between them.
As for the point about them having only had one date, keep in mind that they have known each other for a year now, and have shared regular shifts at Pop's. Despite not having had many formal dates, the bond is there. Though this isn't about Jabitha as a ship, it's about Tabitha as a person.
Closing statement.
Tumblr media
You know what? I'm tired. The only part of this statement I'm going to talk directly about is the section where it says "again... we know NOTHING about you. What are you really running from Ms Tate?"
Maybe instead of judging the fact that we know very little about Tabitha as a character, we could all take a moment to consider why that is. And maybe to think about other characters, for example, Toni, also don't get much backstory either. I'm not going to make this about race (because as a white person, I really don't think I'm educated enough to make intelligent comments about this), but it certainly seems as though this issue comes into play with the Riverdale writing. Just a thought.
--
So there you guys have it. Six, nonsensical reasons for hating Tabitha Tate.
And you know what I think? I don't think this is specifically about Tabitha at all. No, I think that this OP can't stand the idea of their lovely Jughead being with anybody apart from a certain blonde- we've seen it already with Toni- whoever the character is, if they get in the way of Bughead, they're hated (and the fact that both of these occasions feature love interests who are women of colour adds a whole other layer to this problem that I won't be going into right now).
Overall I'm so happy we have Tabitha on this show and that Erinn is a member of the cast. They are both beloved by me, and so many others throughout the fandom. I encourage everyone who sees this post to show both the character and actor some love. Erinn's really earned it, having to deal with nonsense like this.
And OP.. keep my wife's name out of your f*****g mouth.

2022 Fanfiction Reading Challenge
June 2022 Stats
Tumblr media
Well, my friends. June was as crazy as I thought it would be. Aside from the whole horrible state of *gestures at everything*, the Salmon fam moved out of our house and into a hotel for a MONTH - right in time for the HS graduation of my middle son (and our fun impromptu grad trip to Los Angeles and my sunburn from hell). Thankfully, there are only SIX more sleeps until I’m in my brand new house. I have missed my own bed and I never thought I would say this - but I miss eating food I made myself in my own kitchen. You know how they say that adulthood is basically complaining about what to make for dinner every night until you die? Well eating out every night doesn’t change the fact that you still have to decide at which restaurant to eat... it’s a never ending problem (and an expensive one).
ANYWAY - enough about my real life. Let’s talk fic because we all need a little brightness in our lives right now because *gestures at everything* I’m JUST shy of 10 million words read and I’m just over halfway through the year. My goal of +20 mill for the year *might* be within reach.
Pairings were fun this month. I read 10 new ships (some highlights were Eddie/Chrissy from Stranger Things, Phoenix/Bob from Top Gun: Maverick, and even a Ted/Rebecca from Ted Lasso), I also read some of YOUR favourites (from your bookmarks on Ao3) - how else would I have found a heartbreakingly angsty Stevie/Alexis (Schitt’s Creek) fic if it weren’t for you? So thank you!
I’m still working on my Hard (72/88) and Extreme(35/65) challenges. There are several tasks at the @fanfic-reading-challenge that deal with minorities. Do any of you currently have favourite stories with a minority (any minority) as a main character that you can direct me to?
Here are some of my favourite reads and rereads for this month. I hope you will read them and leave lots of loving reviews to let these awesome authors know how much you appreciate them.
-
Tumblr Meet Cute (2 fic series - T) by Toryb - Tory wrote this one several years ago and it was SO fun to revisit. Betty meets Jughead on tumblr - and they fall in love and then meet in person and it’s the sweetest thing ever. I was feeling nostalgic for Bughead fandom fluffiness and this fit the bit. Fellow Buggies - if you haven’t read these two one-shots yet, you need to. DO IT!
let's make some music (fuck all of the bullshit) by @feelavalanche (2/2 - E) - My girl wrote this one - and I am a SUCKER for Musician AUs. Fez and Lexi are both singers with grammy nominated albums and they are SO CUTE together.
only good things happen here by @sweetsoundsofignorance (6/6 - E) - HELLO DARKNESS MY OLD FRIEND! Okay, so I had a lot of feelings while I read this one. It was dark. SO dark. But the final chapter was SO FREAKING cathartic! This fic is canon-divergent at the 'Key Party’ and includes a very dark Betty who does dark things for good reasons? It was both hard and wonderful to read. I don’t know how to explain it - but I think you should read it if you like morally grey (or morally black) characters and character motivation.
Postcode Envy by @bewitchingredhead36 (33/33 - E) - I started reading this Veronica Mars fic in 2014 on ff.net - and there was a big break and then the lovely author started posting chapters again 2022 (thankfully I was subscribed so I got the notification) and it was finally finished in June. The premise is - Cindy Mackenzie is hit in the head with a baseball and wakes up back in high school - but not as Cindy Mackenzie, but as Madison Sinclair (as if she wasn’t switched at birth at all) - but she remembers Veronica and Cassidy and Dick and Logan and everyone.
-
Enjoy the recs - and I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and happy July.

Chef and owener Jughead Jones loves murder documentaries. Yet, he never thought his restaurant, one of the best in New York City, was going to become a crime scene. But private investigator, Betty Cooper, might be just what he needed

One thing that struck me after all...that (and I didn’t have particularly strong feelings against romantic J/T going in): their kisses were underwhelming.
The first was painfully awkward to watch and I almost wanted to yell pointers at them. It was like they were inexperienced teens vs. adults. Contrast that with Bughead’s rather incredible first kiss (who were actually inexperienced teens, lol) and yeah, there’s really no comparison.
They seemed to cut away from the one in the restaurant/scene of Hiram’s triple homicide pretty quickly.
All-in-all it was really weird and if I had to guess, I’d say it was probably intentional. But who even knows with these writers?

spiral anon, i debated doing this mostly because i'm tired but then i decided that the importance or receipts never goes away (warning- it's really long):
I keep getting worried that if this j*bitha Italian restaurant date thing doesn't happen before the musical, it's going to happen then when ras said they have a good storyline and they will sing some kind of romantic song.— and i understand but that's not what ras said as far as i know. the only things i remember him saying is this:
Tumblr media
do i think that people heard him say cole is swoon worthy when he sings and took hearing him and tabitha having a storyline together and decided that it's romantic? definitely.
actually, i think he says the "swoon worthy" part twice. here's another interview where he says it:
Tumblr media
so, is it more about the musical or the ships? with ras, who the hell knows?
but roberto didn't say outright that it was a romantic storyline that was happening. he also said this about bughead:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so now, because ras is so good at double speak and saying something that can be taken any way you want with whatever bias you have, you have to decide, did he say j/t was definitely happening or is he teasing things to keep people watching? he also said he was rooting for bughead and that nothing was off the table (in regards to reggie and veronica) but also how it's clear how much archie and veronica want to be together while also saying that b/archie's relationship would "deepen" and have another facet to it.
so, take all of that as you will.
also, i guess even if you assume they get romantic based on all of the above, it doesn't go as planned if you take drew's words into consideration:
Tumblr media
They keep referring to a dancing girl with JH and I keep thinking it's them finishing their dance.— it was evan, i think, with the dancing emoji and honestly, evan's emojis run the gamut between very literal to very wtf? because often, they only make sense after the fact. but here, let's make it an interpretation that no one would get until they had this episode title:
Tumblr media
or, you can take it literally and assume they're dancing at some point. which they already did and already referred to in 5x11 (i think, these eps are all starting to blur together) so who knows?
again, evan is sort of weird in his hints and a lot of them make much more sense after the fact.
I am trying very hard not to have bughead anxiety, but if BH is not the ones that get to sing Hey#3 Perfect for You I'm going to be pissed. We know that song is Betty's because of the reference to her mom and her posting a blue dress on Twitter. BH already said hey#1 and hey#2 to each other, Jughead called himself Henry which is the character in the musical, and I swear Evan referenced Hey when he talked about BH on the dipp podcast saying it would be important to BH.—i can't speak on the dipp podcast since i didn't listen to it but i agree that the blue dress is the biggest 👀 for that song to me. it's pretty specific to the musical and what song that is. do i think they're dropping hints? seems like but we'll see.
lili's tweet for those who forgot:
Tumblr media
No way they are going to turn that into a B*rchie song because Archie feels like he's going crazy now too. That would make zero sense, right? I swear I'm not concern trolling, I'm having a BH spiral and need someone to talk me off the edge of the cliff.—listen, i am biased so yes, i am going to tell you that i don't think it fits for b/a and never has. because it's literally never shown on screen that archie cares about betty's wellbeing unless the plot forces him to because jughead isn't available. but also that we have a long history of jughead actually being there for her onscreen.
riverdale is predictable in a lot of ways, one being the way they stick archie into betty's storyline (or vice versa) when jughead and veronica aren't around and it goes like this: "we're friends, i'll be there for you, i'll help you, let's do this task. drama created for later ship angst, conclusion, let's not talk for another 6-10 episodes."
as for talking you off the edge, we don't know what's going to happen yet but i do know there's a lot of misinformation about what gets said, even about what happens onscreen. people go to anti-blogs and spend time reading b/a theories and then we end up with people talking about betty being pregnant like she wouldn't already know, glen wouldn't be an option, and veronica gets totally ignored in the narrative even though the whole premise for archie in 5x08 was about how he still had feelings for veronica.
(also i do believe evan did say the blood emoji for them was about them getting blood on their hands for the other and chad is coming back so, you know, here's hoping it's his because that guy sucks)
and i know that there's been no bughead promo for this season, so i get it. it sucks. but i also think that's because bughead is the story (also, they didn't really seem to promo varchie in early 5a and they're not doing much with it now) so maybe it's me but i feel like the pattern is obvious in that. we wouldn't even know that bughead speaks in 5x16 without ras telling us based on the synopsis:
Tumblr media
and we know from the 5x17 one that they're working together and that probably leads into the musical because we've long known that they're going to be looking for polly together. i don't know what's going to happen and we can speculate all day but i will say i personally think bughead will be back.

Note
I don't want to get my hopes up that we're getting Jabitha for the long haul but it would be a really bad look, after Vanessa's call out of the writers, if Tabitha was used as a foil or cheerleader for Jug and Betty. It has been established very early on that Jabitha are attracted to each other, Jug just said he wasn't over the break up,NOT Betty, the trauma of the betrayal, in other words I like you enough I want to work on myself first, so I can be at my best for you, that doesn't say BH to me
I have to put this under a read more because I accidently made this very long lol who knew I, jabitha-endgame, had a lot of feelings about this
I agree with all of this. Vanessa speaking up has already had a huge impact on the show, and I think Tabitha is evidence of that. I actually ranted a bit about this point earlier, so I won’t repeat all that here lol.
There's just nothing narratively indicating that Tabitha would push Betty and Jughead together, especially since she is the one who initiated her kiss with Jughead - and he kissed back! Jughead unpromptedly jumped in to dance and twirl Tabitha and dip her over the table. They both got swept up in that moment, giggling with huge smiles. Even before the kiss they are so close to each other and you can see something has changed for them both.
I don't see any reason to fear that Tabitha would be used as a prop to push Jughead to Betty. Especially in the last two episodes of this season where Jabitha have been growing closer the entire time and Bughead haven't interacted. Betty also told Tabitha that Jughead "wasn't her problem" and that he shouldn't be Tabitha's problem either. Tabitha cares so much about Jughead, why would she push him to be with someone who has outwardly shown disdain towards him. Betty has also played Jughead's voicemail in front of Tabitha and Jessica for the purpose of "exposing" Jughead to them. I know Bugheads want their ship back, but there isn't anything there for them right now. Not a single thing we have seen in the time jump episodes supports their wishful thinking that Tabitha will want them together.
1000 percent Jughead was not ready to be in another relationship, and that's not because he was "still hung up on Betty". He explains to Tabitha that the Betty breakup was rough on him, says he has trauma from it, and that his last relationship was a toxic one. That's why that conversation ends with them flirt-ily deciding to be fRiENdS 😏 and then Jughead says "as your fRiENndD 😏😏😏" before asking Tabitha his favor. They table their potential romance for the time being because Jughead isn't in the right mental space to have another romantic relationship, but their feelings for each other are still there. Heck, when Jughead disappears to go to NY he makes one phone call, and it's to Tabitha with the romantic intention to "finish that dance". Their last dance ended with a kiss! And when Jughead gets back from NY their incoming romance feels so obvious.
In 5x16 Jughead and Tabitha exchange genuine apologies - and Jughead looks shocked that Tabitha thinks she has anything to apologize for. I think the juxtapositions between the Jabitha and Bughead apology scenes are intentional. Same with the Bughead and Jabitha voicemails. By the end of the episode we get the incredible "why are you so nice to me" scene with Tabitha gently reaching out to touch and hold onto Jughead's hand as she tells him that she cares about him and he needs to take care of himself, and this is what prompts him to go back to AA. Not to mention when Betty and Jughead finally have their talk in this episode, Jughead is somehow the one apologizing and while he clearly has fallen off the wagon with his drinking right in front of her, Betty just gets up and leaves him without a word while he’s on a 2 minute phone call. There has not been anything remotely resembling Bughead reciprocation from Betty this season - she’s called his writing cringey, she hooked up with the person she cheated on him with, she told Tabitha he wasn’t her problem anymore, and she sided with his ex over him by giving Jessica the manuscript he worked so hard to write for his deadline. Betty had her own trauma she’s working through this season, obviously, and I don’t hold that against her. But her interactions with and about Jughead simply aren’t forwarding a romantic narrative anymore, that’s just not the story being told between them.
In 5x17, it’s been 10 days and Jughead is "recovered" - not fully because that's not how alcoholism works, but for Riverdale purposes he seems ok now. And Jughead's relationship to Tabitha is developing further. When Tabitha tells Betty and Jughead that Squeaky is missing, Jughead's eyes are glued to Tabitha and he offers himself up to help her. Previously it had been Tabitha helping him out, and now that has changed. And when Tabitha gets the news in the morgue that confirms Squeaky is dead, Jughead and Tabitha turn towards each other for support, with both of them physically reaching out for the other - and Betty has no jealous reaction to this almost couply moment that happened right in front of her face. Jughead is making himself emotionally available to Tabitha now in ways he wasn't able to before 5x15, where he had to address the trauma that was still affecting him - his relationship and breakup with Betty.
And in 5x18 we get Jughead now being there for Tabitha and supporting her. This makes perfect sense for their development and anyone who is shocked by this simply wasn’t paying attention to what was happening on screen before.
Also, there is just no way that Tabitha is a throwaway girlfriend for Jughead either, because Jessica already fills that role. Tabitha is her own character, and parts of the fandom really need to stop ignoring her. Erinn is a main cast member and is a series regular again next season as well, Tabitha isn’t going anywhere.
Tabitha’s purpose in the story is not to push Jughead and Betty together or to prop them up to the other. In fact, Tabitha the one who is with Jughead during all of his emotional moments this season. She is the one who protected him from the debt collectors, she is the one who gives him a job when he needs it, she takes care of him at the key party, she goes with him to the support group and gets him to open up to her when he runs out of it, she pretends to be his current girlfriend to protect him from his ex, she helps him with the mothman investigation, she let’s him keep weird alien corpses in her restaurant, she is the one who is worried about him when he is missing, she is the one person he calls on his way out of town, she is the person Jughead goes to when he needs someone he trusts to watch over him, she tucked him in on the couch when he passed out, she is the one that convinced him that he needs to take care of, and prioritize, himself - hello?! what’s not clicking for some people? It’s all there, it’s all been there this entire time.
GIVE ME THE MUSICAL NOW I CAN’T WAIT.
Sorry for this extremely wordy answer, but yeah I agree completely with everything you said. To me, narratively, it’s Jabitha full steam ahead.

So many of us believe that bughead gonna sing hey in musical but someone said that someting gonna happen in musical between tabitha and jughead. And in The Dipp last article they give us a bingo carts(?)and in one of them it was written that jabitha would hook up. So is someting gonna happen between them more than as friend and is this bingo carts are saying us whats gonna happen or they are just possibilities? We know that bughead gonna get close in ep 16-18 soo as a bughead fan what should be expect in their future??
(And sorry if i make mistake)
I mean, the musical will be deep in the time Betty and Jughead are working together. You know why they haven't worked anything out thus far?
They haven't been in physical proximity. The show hasn't allowed them to be. If they were, things would be worked out posthaste.
Anyway, I see two scenarios with this Bughead/Jabitha thing.
1. He expresses some interest in the name of ~moving on, but she either tells him that he's got things going on with Betty, or she kind of tells him maybe and then we ramp up the mystery and, well, Jughead is nothing if not totally in it for Betty. I'm guessing Tabitha would see that when Betty is around, he's never going to be fully there with her, no matter how moved on he says he is.
2. Jughead and Tabitha have less than 3 scenes that could be interpreted of a romantic nature but basically it equates to "yeah, no, sorry," and he helps her with some restaurant thing? I don't know, I can't be bothered to care.
They've made some truly baffling decisions this year. I think they were trying to turn the spotlight off of Bughead, and "reset" in a way, but the thing is, the characters are pretty much unchanged from pre-time jump. There was no reset. Also, this show needs Bughead as a driving force. Riverdale has two big aspects - Bughead and the overarching mystery, which Bughead drives. And by taking out both of these, what we're left with is a horrifically boring, completely disjointed season that feels like the fun has been physically removed from it. There's no good reason the main Big Bad of the season should only really be focused on in the last four episodes. And this hyper-faithfulness to the new plan, to DNR-ing Bughead, even when it was obvious that it didn't work, has resulted in the lowest numbers and engagement in the show's history.
I really do think Bughead will be back by the end of the season. And there should also be no more obstacles. I've long said that when they're back, they won't break up again. This was a profoundly bad idea from the start, and I can only hope S6 is a return to form, and there is no S7. I just don't have the valor for that, y'all.

🔎
The Red String of Fate: Fact or Fiction? The title of the article read. Nancy couldn’t read anymore, not even if it was Bess who had sent it and was most likely going to broach the subject as soon as she came downstairs. Grabbing her bag off the hook she left her room and headed down the stairs.
“Good morning Nancy!” Her dad and Ryan echoed as she entered the kitchen. This was still taking some time to get used to, her two dads side by side drinking coffee and cooking breakfast as if it was the most normal thing in the world. Which, Nancy thought, would explain the state and smell of the kitchen.
“Morning,” Nancy replied. She moved through the kitchen toward Carson, letting him wrap his arms around her. As he moved away Nancy spied a circle of red around his pinky finger. “What happened to your finger?” Her eyes wandered away from the mark on his finger, the same size and shape of his wedding ring, scanning his face for any sort of incriminating clues.
“Must have burned it when helping Ryan cook.” He said, nonchalantly. He shook his hand as if that would erase the mark.
“That’s unusual for a burn. It’s a perfect circle.” Nancy had grabbed her father’s hand and was turning it back and forth to observe it more completely. “Does it hurt?”
Carson wrestled his hand back. Placing both hands on Nancy’s shoulders he held his daughter at arm’s length. “It’s just a burn, Nancy. Nothing serious, nothing supernatural.” Another thing that would take some getting used to -- her dad knowing about the weird, paranormal happenings around their seaside town. “And, no it doesn’t hurt. Not even a little.”
Nancy nodded at her father, not quite convinced, and he released her. She wandered over to a cabinet and grabbed a mug to pour herself a cup of coffee. The action caused a small red object to be knocked off the countertop. Her coffee momentarily forgotten, Nancy bent down and picked it up. A spool of red thread. How did it get there? Who did it belong to?
“What’s this?” She showed the spool to Carson. He had started dishing himself up a plate of food and squinted at the object in Nancy’s hand.
“It's a spool of thread. Probably belonged to your mother.”
“Mom didn’t sew.”
Carson shrugged. “We’ve reached our before breakfast question quota. Can we discuss it after we eat?”
Nancy put the spool back on the counter and turned to Ryan. He was wearing an apron and a gaudy chef’s hat standing by the stove with a spatula in hand.
It would have been comical if it wasn’t so disastrous.
“You want some,” Ryan asked proudly, showcasing his burnt scrambled eggs as if they were a masterpiece.
Nancy screwed up her face. “I think I’ll pass.” She said, finally pouring herself a cup of coffee.
“They aren’t as bad as they look or smell.” Nancy turned to see Bess seated at the breakfast table. She had a plate of burnt eggs, bacon, and toast in front of her and was smiling around a mouthful of food.
“Nancy, you have to eat something,” Carson said, passing by Nancy to seat himself down by Bess.
“I’m fine with just coffee. I’ll just get something at The Claw,” she said, shrugging off her father’s recommendation. She snuck a look at her phone to check the time. “Speaking of, Bess, I think we should get a move on. You know how George is when we’re late.”
“You think it’s a good idea to go back to work so soon after…” The rest of Carson’s sentence faded away, the implication of after hanging heavy in the air.
“Yeah, Nancy, George ok’d your extended absence. Just as she did Ace’s.” Bess was quick to add, filling the silence.
At the mention of his name, Nancy’s hand tightened around her mug, her stomach spinning. She put the mug back down on the counter. She hadn’t mentioned her dreamscape or the part each of them played in the journey to any of her friends. The closest she had come was Ace, and that hadn’t gone as planned.
“It's been weeks. I need some semblance of normalcy back in my life, and that means,” Nancy swung her bag over her shoulder so it hung across her body, “returning for my usual shift at The Claw.”
“Remember, you can come home at any time.”
The smoke alarm chose then to blare its angry head. Carson rushed off to the smoke alarm, ordering Ryan to begin opening windows around the house.
“And, I think that’s our cue to leave,” Nancy said to Bess, speaking louder over the wails going off in her house.
Bess nodded, just as happy to escape the chaoticness of the household as Nancy was. She reached for a napkin that was laying on her lap, dabbing at her lips politely as if she were dining at a fancy restaurant, and quickly went off to get her belongings.
🔎
“Don’t you think it’s quite romantic though?” Bess said, continuing the conversation they were having on the ride over about the article she had sent Nancy.
“It sure is something.”
Bess gasped, a hand flying to her chest in shock. “You don’t believe in soulmates?” She nearly screeched.
“Love I believe in,” Nancy said, approaching the door to The Claw, “but soulmates…there’s no proof.” Nancy pushed open the door to The Claw. Her gaze travelled over the room -- she spotted George and Nick at the bar. With Ace.
Ace was home? He wasn’t supposed to be home for another two weeks.
Nancy felt her throat constrict, she stood frozen in place. She thought facing him with these new fully realized feelings would be difficult enough standing on his front stoop, a rehearsed speech at the ready, but that didn’t hold a candle to seeing him unexpectedly here amongst their friends in a familiar environment and completely lost for words.
Ace looked up at the door at the sound of the chime. He beamed when he saw his two friends but his eyes remained on Nancy longer, Bess having already sauntered into the restaurant and over to the bar, wrapping her arms around Ace from behind, Ace’s hand coming up to pat her arm. His concentration broke off Nancy for the time being.
Nancy took a deep breath, then crossed the threshold.
Out of Bess’s hold, Ace was off his stool and was coming towards her before Nancy was even halfway across the restaurant. She froze in her tracks.
“Hey, Nancy!”
“Hey, Ace! Uh, how was your trip? How is...how is Amanda?” She felt a sudden prick against her finger, nothing more than a needlepoint but it made her look down anyway. Her finger was snagged in her bag buckle and she yanked it free.
“It was great.” She heard Ace saying And looked back up. “Amanda is good too.” It was as if he wanted to say more but shut his mouth instead.
They were such simple answers but it made her heart ache. The throbbing in her finger intensified and she jammed her hands into her coat pockets, slowly moving away.
“I should put my things in the back,” Nancy announced, walking away.
“Wait, Nancy.” He reached out a hand to stop her progress, his hand lingering on her arm. “How are you doing?”
She took a deep breath in before answering. “I’m alright.” She nodded, a faint smile tracing her lips. “Just recovering from nearly dying. So, you know, the usual.”
Ace nodded, not taking his hand or eyes off her. The pain in her finger had subsided, it was nothing more than pinched flesh after all. She was only thinking about it because she couldn’t allow her thoughts to settle on how Ace’s touch felt on her arm. Like his touch was meant to be there.
She gulped, trying to find her voice, and pulled away. “Ace, I need to go.”
She saw visible disappointment, concern, and curiosity flash through his eyes. Then she turned and disappeared into the kitchen. He stood there watching after her until Bess called him back to the bar to fill them in on his romantic getaway, and as a loyal platanchor he willingly obliged.
🔎
Nancy sat on the bench in front of the set of lockers. The kitchen was empty and she could spend the short time before her shift alone. And, Ace wasn’t yet in the kitchen, watching her from above.
He was with Amanda, and according to him, they were doing good. She couldn’t have these thoughts. She had to forget about this crush, or whatever it was, and move on. No matter how much she wanted to run her fingers through his gorgeous locks, again, or kiss him, and not an almost dreamscape kiss this time, she couldn’t act on it. She wouldn’t. She would just have to figure out a way to get through this shift without these feelings interfering and then figure out how to get over him.
“Drew, get your ass out here. We need you.” George called from the dining area signalling that her shift had begun.
She stood from the bench and smoothed down the front of her uniform, composing herself before heading out into the thick of it. Her first day back in weeks.
Ace was entering the kitchen as she was leaving, the two were in a dance for access to the door. He moved to his left, she moved to her right. Then vice versa. Eventually Ace allowed her enough room to scoot by, laughing. She felt his eyes on her back as she moved past. What greeted her on the other side was the typical Saturday lunch rush. She did want normalcy, she remembered, as she dug into her pocket for her notebook and flipped it open to a clean sheet to begin taking orders.
From there the hours became a blur of jotting down orders, filling and refilling water glasses, and polite smiles that she didn’t wholeheartedly feel. It was filled with lobster rolls, fried calamari, fish and chips, and The Claw’s famous clam chowder being passed from the kitchen to the awaiting customers. She was more or less in a state of workflow uncommon to her gig as a waitress when Nick stopped her, pulling her aside.
“Nancy, your hand looks serious.”
It had begun to hurt more, a constant pounding but she continued to play off as best she could even though the pain was getting to her. She looked down and saw that her finger was scratched up and bleeding, and a rash was beginning to spread through her entire hand.
“I must have been itching it. Not a big deal.”
George and Bess had gravitated towards her too and Ace had moved to the serving hatch, a cloth hung over his shoulder and his arms resting on the ledge. Great a full audience!
“I know first aid,” Ace piped up eagerly from the hatch, “I was a Boy Scout”
Nancy’s heartbeat quickened but she kept her voice steady as she said, “as much as I appreciate your concern, and I do, it’s just a few scratches. I can easily wash it up in the bathroom and be back in a minute.”
“You are not serving food with that,” George pointed in the direction of Nancy’s hand, a look of horror on her face.
“Oh, Nancy, it’s dripping!” Bess exclaimed, hands fluttering to her mouth. A few patrons close enough to be in earshot turned to see what the commotion was about.
Sure enough, during the few seconds of the conversation, it had gotten worse and now a green goo was emanating from the wound.
“Oh, ew,” Nancy said, extending her other hand quickly just in time to catch a glob before it fell to the floor.
“Take Ace up on his offer,” George ordered, nodding towards the kitchen, “then go home. The rest of you back to work.”
Nancy sighed. Keeping her mind preoccupied and not focusing on her crush on Ace hadn’t worked and now she was going to be in a room alone with him. Unprepared and in unknown territory. Then she winced and pulled her hand toward her chest. Her hand was in excruciating pain and she had to admit that it needed tending to. So, with a groan, she turned to meet him.
🔎
Ace was sitting on the bench searching around in the first aid kit when Nancy arrived in the back room.
“Let me take a closer look,” he said when he saw her paused at the top of the steps. He tucked his hair behind his ear, watching her descend the stairs and closing the distance between them.’God, that hair!’ she thought as she sat down beside him and extended her hand for him to inspect. “It looks like an infection. A gnarly one.”
“Gnarly?” Nancy said an awkward laugh in her voice. He smiled. She looked away. She couldn’t fall back into their usual behaviour no matter how easy and familiar it was.
“Don’t worry, it’s nothing we can’t fix.” Ace said, picking up and ripping into the small packet, unfolding the wipe into the perfect square with such care.
She found herself staring too long at his hands as he took her own and wiped away the blood and grime from her skin. She flinched, shaking herself away from the memory of those fingers entwined in hers.
“Does it sting?” Ace’s hands slowed. Nancy shook her head. “Good,” he said, ripping into another packet. “Because this isn’t a one-and-done job.”
In the end, it took seven of the tiny wipes to clean the blood and green goopy mess. During which, Nancy had gone through all the symptoms she’d experienced with the lust butterflies, many times over. Although, fortunately for her, under better control. By the time Ace was applying a thin layer of an antibiotic ointment to the scratches she was wondering if he could feel how fast her pulse was racing, how sweaty her hand was in his or if he could see the heat upon her cheeks, and if he did, did he assume it was just a side effect from the infection or something more? After he secured the bandage in place he dropped his hands to his lap.
“All done.” He said, proudly. He admired his handiwork for a moment then looked up, meeting Nancy’s eye.
The two of them shared an extended moment of eye contact, his eyes so blue and portraying a deepness that many didn’t know the extent of, an ocean she was falling into. She scrambled to her feet at once conscious of how close she had gravitated to him. She had been practically sitting in his lap.
“Uh, thanks, Ace. It feels better already.” She felt herself falling back into those eyes, and pulled away before it could last any longer by heading for her locker. “I should be getting home.”
“I can give you a ride.” Ace said. Nancy popped off her lock and turned to look behind her. Ace was still on the bench, his hands balled together in his lap. He was rubbing his thumb against his other hand, watching her, eager for her to accept.
“It’s fine, Ace,” Nancy said. “I can walk. Bess can drive my car home.” She proceeded to shimmy into her jacket, careful not to upset her bandaged finger and fanned out her hair that had been trapped behind the collar. She then reached into her pocket for her car keys, putting them into her empty locker and writing a quick note, slipping it through the slates of Bess’s locker.
“Are you mad at me?”
Nancy faced Ace, her hands stilled on her coat buttons. “No--no I’m not mad at you.” She couldn’t take that sad, puppy dog-eyed look and busied herself with her coat.
“Then why have you been avoiding me all day?”
Nancy thought back on her shift as she continued with the buttons. When Ace was at the serving hatch she would wait until he was back at the sink before continuing her job. When she was in the kitchen she would ignore his calls and waves for her attention, And, if he was out in the dining area fetching something or chatting with George, Nick, or Bess she would take the longer route to where she was going. It hurt to stay away. It almost felt as if she was being pulled in his direction but she fought against that feeling.
“I--I wasn’t -- I haven’t been avoiding you.” Nancy lied.
“And, you’re letting Bess drive your car? She still drives on the wrong side of the road.”
“You should keep Florence here,” Nancy said, slinging her bag over her shoulder. “For when you pick up Amanda from the hotel.”
“Um, Nancy, actually about that.” Ace started. He stood from the bench in an attempt to stop her but she had already made her exit through the back door.
Outside, Nancy leaned back on the wall of The Claw. Her eyes shut.
When did this become so hard?
Ace was her best friend. But she had to put a kibosh on these thoughts before it ruined what they had. And, luckily for her, she had a mystery on her hands to do just that. Literally.
🔎
Nancy hadn’t walked home. Instead, she had made the trek to The Historical Society. She had let herself in and found Hannah doing inventory.
“I need your help,” Nancy said after acquiring Hannah’s attention. She had her bandaged hand raised. When she had left The Claw it was, as she had told Ace, feeling significantly better but by the time she had reached The Historical Society the pain level was off the charts and the green goo was seeping through the bandaging. And, she was beginning to feel faint.
Hannah was at her side at once, immediately leading her over to a chair. She re-cleaned and bandaged the wound and handed Nancy a high-strength painkiller and a glass of water, which dulled the pain a bit. Hannah sat down across from her to hear the events that lead to this predicament.
“Hand me your bag.” Hannah requested after Nancy finished detailing the story. “I’m going to test the buckle for any supernatural or natural causes of this infection.” Nancy did as she was told, but the short litmus paper-type test turned up nothing of concern.
“Could it be something from the lockboxes, something I let out when I got the shroud? Which, again, I profusely apologize for.”
Hannah was silent for a moment, in thought. “This is nothing like anything I recall seeing or hearing about before. But we can take a look.” Hannah got up from the table and returned with an armload of gathered papers, records, and books that could be of use.
That had been four hours ago and still, there were no answers. And, her finger was again protesting loudly.
“I’m sorry, Nancy.” Hannah placed a hand on the younger woman's uninfected hand and squeezed it.
“It’s alright. We tried.” Nancy reassured her. “Actually, Hannah, while I’m here could we discuss something else?”
“Anything.”
Right now Nancy needed motherly advice. And, after losing a mother, a grandmother, a potential step-mother, and learning about her biological mother’s death all in less than a year, Hannah Gruen was the last maternal figure she had.
Nancy took a deep breath, letting it out in a slow exhale. “Have you ever had a crush on someone that wasn’t available?”
“Yes, I have. My best friend.”
“What did you do about it?”
“I told them.”
Nancy’s eyebrows shot up. “You told them?” She said in disbelief. “Even though there was no chance you’d be together? Weren’t you worried you were risking your friendship?”
Hannah shook her head. “I was at the beginning. But, it ended up being better for the both of us that I told the truth. The truth holds power.”
The truth holds power, that was something Nancy believed too.
“Thanks.” Hannah gave Nancy’s hand another squeeze, then she got up from the table to return to her work.
Nancy felt a sudden weight in her coat pocket. Reaching in she pulled out the spool she had found in her kitchen that morning. She stared at it for a few seconds in bewilderment. How had it magically appeared in her pocket when she had left it on the counter before she left for The Claw? The longer she stared at it the object and the colour became familiar for some reason, something that Bess was talking about. Nancy dug her phone out of her other pocket and opened it. The article that Bess had sent her was still on the screen. The red string of fate. Nancy scanned the article.
‘According to Japanese legend,’ she read, ‘there is a thread that originates from the heart and extends through our pinky finger connecting us to those that we are fated to meet.’ Nancy looked down at her finger. The infected finger, the one now covered in bandages, was her pinky. The red mark her dad swore was a burn wound its way around his pinky. ‘It is said that no matter how much you stretch or tangle the invisible red string it can never be broken.’
Nancy recalled how her finger felt better when feelings of attraction were coursing through her body when she was in the back room with Ace and had gotten worse when that attraction was being suppressed, as she was trying to do the entire day. How she had felt that strange pull whenever she was near him as if being pulled closer by a thread.
So much for forgetting these feelings. They were as much a part of her as her traumas.
“Hannah,” Nancy called, and the owner of The Historical Society appeared in her office doorway, “I think I know what this is.”
Nancy placed the spool on the table and handed her phone to Hannah so she could read through the article herself. She recounted for Hannah finding the mark on her dad’s finger. Him downplaying it as a burn.
Nancy’s eyes widened, as a thought occurred to her. “I need to see if he’s alright.”
“You check on your dad, and I’ll look further into this,” Hannah said, handing Nancy her phone back. “I’ll let you know if I find anything.”
Nancy grabbed her bag off the table and ran out of The Historical Society. Her phone clutched in her hand, she dialled her home number. Carson didn’t answer after the first or second ring and the worry began to build in Nancy until her stomach ached. When he did pick up on the third ring he could hear him talking to someone in the background. Ryan she presumed.
“Did you happen to touch the spool? The one I knocked off the counter this morning.”
“Hello to you too,” Carson replied sarcastically. He covered the receiver but she could still make out him saying “It’s Nancy.” to Ryan. They had a snippet of a side conversation and then she could hear the sound of the speakerphone being turned on.
This wasn’t the time for the speakerphone.
“What were you saying?” Carson asked and Nancy repeated herself. “I kicked it off the stairs by accident, picked it up and put it on the kitchen counter. Is this important for something sleuthing-related?”
“I’ll get back to you on that,” Nancy said, putting an end to that line of conversation. She decided to change her tactic to avoid his growing suspicion. “Hey, by the way, how’s your hand?”
“Same as the last time you asked.”
“Alright then, I’ll see you soon.”
“You’re coming home?”
“Yeah, I’ve had a long day.” Nancy ended the call and dropped her phone into her pocket. She slowed her pace, suddenly feeling weak and dizzy. Her worry catching up to her.
She had nothing to worry about. Her dad was fine. Good even, he seemed to enjoy having Ryan around. Maybe she was wrong about this lead and the spool hadn’t caused the infection. But that still brought to mind why she had found it in her pocket. Nancy caught herself itching her finger over the bandage as she thought this over. The wound had begun leaking through the bandages again and she stopped her itching.
Suddenly her phone began ringing and she took it back out to answer the call.
“Hello?”
“Nancy,” it was Nick who answered the phone, “you have to return to The Claw ASAP.”
“Why? What’s going on?”
There was a shuffling as the phone was passed between hands. Now it was George’s voice on the other end. “It’s Ace, he’s caught whatever weird finger fungus you have.”
No, this was definitely the spool.
🔎
Nancy got back to The Claw in record time. Although it was not yet eight o’clock the restaurant was empty of patrons and only Nick and George could be seen in the dining area.
“They’re in the back,” Nick called as soon as Nancy passed through The Claw’s doors.
Ace was sitting on the bench, Bess knelt in front of him pressing a damp cloth to his face. “Oh, Nancy, you’re back!” She exclaimed once she saw her.
Ace turned. He was pale, too pale, showing off dark bags under his eyes and a sheen of sweat glistened on his skin, soaking through his clothes. And, his pinky was just as green and goopy as hers was. Despite this, he smiled at the sight of her. Nancy threw her bag to the side and knelt beside Bess.
“I’ll give you two some time alone,” Bess said, handing Nancy the wet cloth, then she exited the backroom.
Her phone then decided to ring. She snuck a look at the caller ID. “It’s Hannah.” She said to Ace. “I should take it.” Getting to her feet she walked a few paces away to take the call.
“I was looking through my photocopies of the Women in White’s spellbook,” Hannah explained after Nancy accepted the call, “and found a spell similar to this red string of fate curse.”
“This isn’t exactly the Women in White’s MO.” The moment she voiced it she knew. “It’s Temperance’s.”
“I was thinking the same thing. She’s changed the spell in some way. To only hex those who haven’t found or confessed to their destined partner. If they have it shows up only as a red mark around their pinky, no infection.”
The red mark showed her dad had met his soulmate, her mom, and even though she was gone she was still his soulmate.
“The bad news does remain the same,” Hannah continued, “when the infection gets to the heart both destined partners die.”
Nancy swallowed hard and looked back at Ace. He was looking back at her. This time when they shared a long moment of eye contact she didn’t avert her eyes. Her heart pounded. “Is there a cure?” Nancy felt her voice crack on the final word.
“Nothing that I’ve found yet, but I’ll keep looking.”
There was no discernable cure. Ace was running out of time. And, because this curse had connected the two of them, so was she.
Nancy thanked Hannah and hung up, gravitating back to Ace, and sitting by his side. She entwined her hands with his cold, clammy ones. Not caring how the goop squelched between their fingers. It had made her feel better when she was at her worst when they were unattaching the wraith from feeding on her life force, and she wanted to show the same compassion to him. The longer they sat there, the worse her symptoms got until she was the same feverish mess that he was.
She held his hand as tight as she could, ignoring all the butterflies fluttering inside her. “This is my fault,” Ace parted his chapped lips to protest but Nancy silenced him. “No, that’s the truth.”
This reminded her of what Hannah had told her back at The Historical Society. Truth has power. Maybe confessing would lessen the curse.
She couldn’t look at him as she spoke instead looking over his shoulder as she recited a modified version of the script she had planned weeks previously. “In New York, I had this dreamscape experience with you at the bluffs. It was -- it was powerful and I felt things. For you. At first, I thought that it was the wraith manipulating how I felt but it wasn’t. I-- I know that now. And, I know you’re with Amanda and I don’t want to ruin that. And, right now I should be my first priority and put relationships on the backburner. And, I know this could risk everything we have, but, I needed -- I needed to tell you.”
Ace was silent, and he removed his hands from hers. Nancy was preparing herself for the worst, for Ace to say that he didn’t want to be friends with her anymore. That she should stay out of his and Amanda’s relationship. She frantically wiped at her eyes, trying to compose herself for what was coming.
“And, you don’t need to reciprocate. You’ve--you’ve become very special to me and I--I can’t lose you.”
“Nancy, slow down,” Nancy looked tearfully into his eyes, stopping her unconscious stream of thought, and he grabbed her hand again. Some of his colour had returned and the dark circles under his eyes weren’t as pronounced. “Amanda broke up with me.
Nancy gulped. “She did what now?” She hadn’t expected this.
“She said I wasn’t all in. And, she’s right. I’m not. So, she stayed behind in Portland.” Ace squeezed their conjoined hands. “And, you’re right too. Your first priority should be yourself right now. You shouldn’t be jumping into a relationship with me or anyone else until you're ready. But, I’m always going to be by your side. Nothing will change that.”
A sudden green smoke filled the room making Nancy and Ace cough. When enough smoke cleared away, and they were able to get a good look at each other, Nancy noticed Ace’s pinky had healed, good as new, and quickly removed her bandages. Except for the line of scratches, it was as if nothing had happened in the first place.
George, Nick, and Bess rushed into the back room, waving the smoke away with their hands that was drifting towards them as it drifted to the kitchen windows.
“What the hell is going on back here?” George said, “We smelled smoke.”
“It’s the tail-end of Temperance’s soulmate curse,” Nancy responded.
When each of her friends looked back at her with confused and shocked expressions she unclasped her hands from Ace’s and stood to face her friends. She had another truth to reveal.
“Temperance is back. She used my blood from her machine to return. Now, she’s somewhere in Horseshoe Bay. Waiting. Trying to learn about me. About us. About this town. So she can destroy it.”
“So, what’s the plan?” Ace said, coming up to join her. “How are we going to kick this bitch out of our house?”
Nancy smiled at him.
Maybe there was something about this soulmate thing after all.

Notice Lili stans hold same pretensions about slumming it?
They didn’t like when he had a beard for example. No, Jughead needed to be freshly shaven and not slovenly at all and they decided it would be a sign when the facial hair came off that Bughead was on horizon. Once he was shaven and over his drinking because then he could properly put Betty first rather than expect her to help him. Because precious is what is important here.
They were the ones that initially hated the Serpents though superficially loved the motorcycle and jacket. They like the materialistic trappings of gang life (jacket/royalty) but didn’t really like the lower class aspect they felt it held of being poor, unambitious, violent...though funny enough Betty has been more violent than Jughead ever was on her own.
Notice they keep saying Tabi is out of Jughead’s league and she’s “slumming” it with him. Why? Why is she out of his league? Oh...right....because he grew up on the wrong side of tracks and doesn’t have money? Well I have to tell you all...Tabi actively shuns her rich family and chose to live in a rundown town and run Pop’s restaurant that historically caters to clientele most of the pretentious (and racist) people in RD would shun. Seems to me she has far more in common with Jughead than she does Veronica or you....she CHOSE this for herself. She isn’t particularly concerned with getting rich but rather helping people which hey...coincides with Jughead’s propensity to seek to help downtrodden like himself.
Also, Jughead has a complicated back history that led to his current self destructive tendencies and lack of self worth...of which your girl compounded by betraying him and validating his worst fears/opinion of himself. This doesn’t actually mean he is without value and has no talent and clearly they are foreshadowing he is going to write another novel. Unlike the shallow ex who freaks out he might not go to an ivy league or college, Tabi doesn’t judge him, encourages him and he is responding to that care.

A little missing 5.19 scene drabble featuring a conversation between bughead - but it's really more about jabitha/barchie. I have more of these in my brain so there might be more to come.
--------------
It's 11:30am and Betty is just leaving the Riverdale Post Office. She just picked up her FBI diploma and certification after having missed her graduation while she was searching for Polly.
She feels antsy and doesn't feel like going home. She decides to stop by Pop's for a coffee.
The bell rings as she enters the diner. The restaurant is mostly empty, besides a couple in the booth at the far end and Jughead behind the counter, back turned away from her, rolling cutlery into napkins. He turns around towards her as he hears the bell ring, and gives a little smile and nod when he sees her.
He looks good - as in, happy and healthy - much better than the last time she really talked to him, which was in the bunker when he apologized for his awful voicemail. She had been in possibly an even worse place than him at that time and probably didn't react as kindly as she could have. She's heard from Tabitha that he’s been doing better in his recovery. She's also heard from Kevin that Jughead and Tabitha appeared to be officially dating now - some news that didn't surprise her at all.
She goes and sits down at the counter.
"Hey Betty," says Jughead, still turned away from her. "Coffee?"
"Yes, please," she says. "How are you doing these days?"
He comes over, sets an empty coffee cup in front of her, and starts filling it up from a carafe. He smirks. "Not too shabby," he says. "What brings you in to this lovely establishment on this fine Friday afternoon?"
"I just had some errands to run and didn't feel like going home yet," Betty responds. "Hey, Kevin told me about you and Tabitha...?" she adds with a smile and an eyebrow raise.
Jughead grins and then averts his eyes. "Yeah," he says, "it’s true, we're a thing. Guess word travels fast in this small town?" He goes back to rolling up cutlery but she can see that he's still smiling.
"Awww you're giddy!" Betty says, taking a sip of her coffee. "How long has this been going on?"
"The 'official' dating title is pretty brand spanking new," he replies, "but I guess it's been kinda going on for at least a few months now." He puts the cutlery in the bin and leans against the opposite counter, facing Betty. "I kind of put it off because I felt like I wasn't in a good enough place to be with her - like with my recovery and everything. I didn't want to bring her down, or put her in a position where she feels like she has to 'save' me, you know?"
Betty nods. "Yeah. I can relate."
"But when Polly died, I started re-evaluating. Life is short, you know? So why waste time?"
Betty sighs and drops her shoulders. "Yeah, it really forces you to rethink everything, doesn't it?"
"Sorry, Betty,” he adds.
“It’s okay,” she said, “I feel the same way.”
“Yeah. So Tabitha's parents were in town and she wanted me to pretend to be her boyfriend to be some kind of buffer at dinner with her parents. I was like, 'why don't I just be your real boyfriend?'" he chuckles.
Betty spit out her coffee as she laughs at the story. "Jug, that's amazing. I'm glad. When things are right, it should just be easy."
"Yeah. I haven't had an 'easy' relationship in... years. It's nice. I really like her."
They both smile.
"I'm still not good enough for her, though," he adds.
Betty laughs. "I can tell she cares about you a lot. I'm happy for you two".
Betty's phone buzzes and she looks down at it. She immediately gets butterflies when she sees it's a text from Archie.
I'm at the wyrm - care to join?
"Jug, thanks for the coffee," she says, standing up and putting a $5 bill down on the counter. "It was nice chatting. I gotta go." He salutes her with a hand to his forehead as he starts walking over to the couple at the far booth to refill their coffee. She slips down the stairs to head to the White Wyrm.

Based on an adorable fic by @theheavycrown @bettycooper and @ms-maj for @riverdaleprideandjoyzine . Bughead study date at a Chinese restaurant. I’m Chinese, so I was actually able to use some of that for this piece. As a fun detail, I wrote the Chinese equivalent of “pop’s” as the name of the restaurant on the neon sign (It literally translates to “dad’s”) 😆 also attached some cute zoomed-in details!! Which one’s your fave? 🙂
