BOOM! Studios Announces “Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Lost Summer” Standalone Comic Special
Tumblr media
BOOM Studios has announced a new Buffy the Vampire special one-shot from writer Casey Gilly, artist Lauren Knight, and colorist Francesco Segala. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Lost Summer is set within the continuity of the TV series.
“Spike is determined to keep the last copy of his embarrassing poetry from being discovered, sending Buffy and the Gang on a faux-supernatural goose chase to New Orleans to cover his tracks. While at an antiques fair along the way, the group is captivated by some Casquette Girls clothes on display. Dawn utters a wish she most likely should’ve kept to herself, and the gang experiences a first hand account of the sisters’ identities…beyond what they could have ever imagined!” (BOOM! Studios)
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Lost Summer  #1, featuring a main cover by Mirka Andolfo, and variant covers by Veronica Fish, Paulina Ganucheau, and Andolfo, goes on sale in May 2023.

I think my fic where Xander accidentally becomes a successful novelist (largely without realizing it) is the funniest idea I’ve ever had. This guy started writing little stories to remember their adventures in Sunnydale (his last line in Chosen about “how will anyone even know about this unless we tell them” burrowed itself into my little archivist brain and won’t let go) and posts them online. He unintentionally goes viral. He thinks someone named Simon N. Schuster is leaving him voicemails. He ends up on the New York Times bestseller list.
He doesn’t even realize that everyone else thinks the stories are fiction. Xander is out here writing autobiographical non-fiction but everyone else thinks he’s a weirdly dedicated author that’s really committed to maintaining a Lemony Snicket style pseudonym/persona for the narrator of his novel. There are “Who Is Xander Harris?” articles. No one can dig up much of anything on him because he lived his whole life in a town that got wiped off the map. He keeps rejecting requests for interviews because of his stage fright. At first this drives his publicist absolutely ballistic but it just adds the the air of mystery that’s drumming up book sales so she lets it go.
He only responds to questions over email and only ever responds “in character” as his “novel’s narrator” and this baffles everyone, only adding to the supposed mystery. It’s literally not even Xander actually writing the emails 95% of the time. It’s Dawn. She has appointed herself as “Xander’s representation” even though she doesn’t really know what being someone’s representation means. She printed business cards.

dude I’m not even a spuffy girlie but the way he fucking looks at her and talks to her in “after life”?!! there is so much genuine love there, so much development in the way he sees her and the way he feels about her. that is NOT the same person who tied her up in “crush”. THAT IS NOT A PERSON WHO WOULD FUCKING ASSAULT HER SEASON 6 WRITERS I AM IN YOUR WALLS

i love dawn and willows relationship like- so much. So honestly one of the things i spend most time thinking about is like times theyve bonded in the fake memories.
you want examples? well, i will provide:
the first time they met. willow is over at buffys house for the first time. she has no clue buffy has a sister cause buffys embarrassed. dawn has heard all about willow cause buffy thinks willow is fucking awsome. dawn pretty instanly very much agrees. Willow eats dinner at the summers, the whole family is bickering and apologises for it but willow being used to quiet and cold or just lonley dinners adores it.
Halloween in s2. Joyce is out of town (like in canon) and buffy sure as hell doesnt want to take dawn. and joyce doesnt want her with a stranger so willow offers to take her with the rest of her kids. Dawn who hasnt hit her growth spurt can wear the same costume as last year(a witch) and stays herself the whole night. When willow leaves the group to talk to giles she puts dawn in charge to make sure no one gets themselves or anyone else killed, her included. cause with slayer princess, shooty xander and cordelia, shes the most reliable and she knows dawn can be responsible if it calls for it, sometimes. Dawn loves willow more than ever and when its all over she quietly admits she was terrified and willow says she did wonderfully.
the end of s2. dawn is staying over at the hospital while willow is in her coma (and that way misses buffy and joyces fight). Shes as terrified as the rest. shes there when willow does her first spell, she thinks its so much cooler than being a slayer.
between season 2 and 3. joyce is depressed and spending alomst all her time looking for buffy. willow is guilty cause she thinks she failed the soul spell, and therefore caused buffy running away. she comes over with cookies and realises dawn is kinda being neglected, so she offers to babysit. Joyce appreciates it a lot. willow thinks its nice too, takes her mind of her guilt and this way she can get out of her empty house and almost pretend she has a family.(she does, the scoobies, dawn and joyce included, but like yk what i mean, normal family)
gingerbread. MOO never tried to kill dawn but they stopped her from interfering and kept her close saying stuff like "were doing this for you, the children". She doesnt talk to her mom to at least a week and when she bumps into Sheila in the street she spits on her.

Fuck ‘Down Bad’ is so Bangel from Buffy’s perspective and her depression session from ‘Becoming’ to ‘Dead Man’s Party’ up until she discovers Angel again and then when Angel leaves.
I can already see all the tragic Bangel edits made to this song. I may not be a shipper but I pay attention.

okay okay okay there is no way buffy becomes a cop post-show. i don't accept that. she is regularly anti-police and anti-gun. on career day she gets told she should become a policewoman and she hates that idea. she is nearly arrested and accused multiple times and gets belittled by officers. she actively breaks out of police custody (mind, that was with faith, but the point still stands). one time a security guard pulls a gun on a monster and she immediately disarms him and says they're useless. the entire scooby gang would say acab with their full fuckin chest. these bitches broke into army barracks. they are knowingly terrible at things like Orders and Discipline.
anyway give me librarian/archivist buffy (who giles makes fun of for taking his job)

I finally got around to reading The Lost Summer and it is so good. Not only is the Spuffy wholesome and cute, just... seeing my Scoobies again, together (though lacking Tara and Xander) feels so refreshing.

Anya, calling Spike her friend just had me clutching my heart. And whatever this was:

(Giles, we need to talk about this. Get back here, Giles--)

does the whole “angel lost his soul and it was Buffy’s first time and she gets all the blame and guilt in the narrative” give anyone else an extreme feeling of ick?

There's a Buffy the Vampire Slayer AU novel series, where Giles gets turned into a vampire and imprisons Buffy because he, of course, realizes that's the best way to deal with the Slayer: if you kill her, another one will be Called and then you'll have to find and deal with this new Slayer. But if you keep the Slayer imprisoned, she's no threat and the White Hats have no ace up their sleeves.
And in Tru Calling (that stars Eliza Dushku, that many Buffy fans like to headcanon as a life Faith is eventually reincarnated into), Jack tries to imprison Tru (and almost succeeds), so she'll rot in jail and the Calling (her power) won't pass to someone else until she dies of old age there (because before, they'd made the mistake of killing Tru's mom--who had had the Calling before her--and the power just passed onto Tru).

I read Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Lost Summer. I’m going to talk about it some more later this week/weekend when I can get good pictures from the issue and go more in-depth on my thoughts.
I did enjoy it, even though I wasn’t overly fond of the inside art style at times. The writing was good and solid: the characters felt like the characters and the story was fun.
For the time frame, it has to be set during Season 6, likely between Older and Far Away and As You Were, since Dawn’s stealing problem is known, but Buffy and Spike are still together, Tara is still alive, and the Magic Box is still around. It’s been a while since I’ve watched As You Were though, and I’m not super knowledgeable on the internal timeline for each episode in the series, so I don’t know how plausible it is for there to be a summer (along with a vacation trip) between the two episodes.
Anyway, the story is cute and enjoyable, especially if you don’t think too hard about when, exactly, it is meant to take place.

honestly, I do think 12yo me was cool as fuck for rewatching the wish, looking at buffy & angel's respective arcs in this, and thinking "actually I can make this worse."
