⭐️ BTS' "Singularity" by V surpasses 300 million streams on Spotify. 🍾 🥂 🎉
Tumblr media
"Singularity" is a song from BTS's third full-length album, LOVE YOURSELF: Tear, released on May 7, 2018, and has surpassed 300 million streams on Spotify.
After the release of the "Singularity" video, it attracted worldwide attention, ranking #1 in global real-time trends and search terms on Korea's largest portal.
"Singularity" is a neo-soul song that is hard to find in K-pop and is praised as a track that expanded the horizons of BTS's music. Pop critics and mainstream media outlets around the world chose it as the representative song of 2018.
In a review of the album, the British Guardian stated: "Singularity is the best song on the album" and it was chosen as "Best Track of 2018". The New York Times and LA Times in the US also named it "Best Song of the Year".
Billboard reviewed "Singularity" and praised it, saying, "V's expressive vocals, with a wide range and deep timbre, are the foundation of BTS's sound." American public broadcaster PBS said: “V has a captivating voice and approaches music in a unique way. His performance style is stunning."
The New York Times said of V's live performance, "V's sensual 'Singularity' is the pinnacle of New York live performances," and MTV in America said, "V knows how to make himself more attractive through close interaction with the camera. He exudes charisma that attracts audiences."
NME, a British music media outlet, commented on how V stunned the crowd, saying: “V took over the entire stadium. His movements were carefully thought out and planned, and his gaze into the camera was hot and intense."

The video was also praised in Martin Puchner's acclaimed novel Culture: The Story of Us, From Cave Art to K-pop was published on February 7, 2023.
"The Harvard professor highlights this performance as a significant moment where traditional East Asian theatrical and performance traditions are revitalized as visual art, infused with a modern and cosmopolitan sensibility. This acknowledgment underscores the cultural impact of BTS and their ability to bridge traditional and contemporary artistic expressions."

Jay B: Be Yourself
If you don’t know by now, I’m an Ahgase. I have a strong love for these seven men who may never know me. Their songs however, have quickly found a space in my heart. Especially their Leader’s songs, Lim Jaebeom, otherwise known as Jay B or Def. His voice carries so much R&B that when my Caribbean mother heard him, she immediately joked that he was a black man in a past life. His vocals in all of his Solos and with Got7 songs satisfy my eardrums all the time.
So, when I learned that he was releasing a Solo Album in late 2022, I just had to listen to it! The album named, Be Yourself was a collection of Soul, Hip Hop paired with sensual vocals. Jay B himself has said, “I want my fans to be comforted by it.” Boy, did it comfort. Actually, for a whole month I, alongside my mother listened to the Album over and over, just vibing to the funk, old school R&B vibes it gave me. Only to realize we had yet to look up any translations for the songs.
I was so engrossed in the music that I didn’t look for any meaning behind it. When I could literally feel the meaning. The Mini Album has a total of six songs and the Title Track ‘Go Up' has over 3 Million Views on Youtube. This was hands down one of my most loved Albums in K-Pop to date. J-Hope (BTS)- Jack in the Box
It really should not come as a surprise to many that this Album is on my list. I’ve loved Hobi’s solos and his rap flow since I heard him on BTS Rapline’s song, Outro: Tear as I first really got into BTS in January 2022. His duality and tone stood out a lot to me and while he deserves to lead the Title of the Best 3rd Gen Dancer, he should also be given some credit as he’s one of the Best Rappers in the K-Pop Industry.
On Sunday 31st of July 2022, J-Hope performed his debut Solo Album, Jack in a Box at Lollapalooza, for one hundred thousand attendees after fearing Armys or Music lovers wouldn’t attend. This performance was it for me. I was hooked on Hobi after this, he outshone legendary music artists that day and his performance resembled that of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
His Album, Jack in the Box no longer carried the bright colors that symbolized J-Hope, known as the Sunshine of BTS. Donning dark grunge, hip hop, R&B roots, while addressing some deep topics such as his future and society. With ten tracks on the Album and endless five-star reviews, this Album will be engrained into my head and forever change the Music Industry as a whole.
As of January 2023, Daebak company has sold out J-Hope’s Jack in the Box Merch. However, AK-Pop has Hope in a Box and Jack in a Box Merch for up to 40% off using my Link to purchase!

GOT7: 2022 Album
I got into GOT7 before I stanned BTS. I was only listening to Jin’s Solo’s at the time and was hesitant to get into BTS because I had heard all sorts of horror stories about BTS stans, the Army. Being an Army myself and engaging online, I can see that most are welcoming and understanding people. So Got7 was the first group I listened to officially, because I knew Jinyoung from the Drama, The Devil’s Judge.
Got7's 2022 Album is one of my fave from them, because of how happy and loving the Album feels. Learning that their Leader, Jaebeom fought for them to own their Name and then to self produce an Album that included songs written by the members. The Title Track, NANANA and Performance Video have over 50 Million Views on Youtube. The songs, Don’t Leave me Alone and You Don’t Care about me have a special space in my heart.
The album has 6 songs, giving you a feel-good vibe, while being dedicated to the Fans. This was the first K-Pop Comeback I have ever experienced and it was so fun, a memory to forever cherish as it really helped me through some tough times. You guys can listen to the album here or Order Got7 Merch and Solo Albums using my code UREIGN on Daebak link!
Stray Kids: NoEasy
Second to Got7 was Stray Kids. I don’t remember fully how I found them, but I think it’s the usual way. Through God’s Menu and Felix's voice. Which I listened to for a whole week before looking for more information on Stray Kids. As I said, I was afraid of getting into K-Pop because of all the rumors. But Felix’s voice really just dragged me in. Although God’s Menu isn’t on the NoEasy Album, It’s still one of the Best K-Pop Songs to date. Afterward, I finally searched more on their discography and listened to NoEasy.
With 14 Tracks that include a mixture of 3Racha madness, Pop, Rock and more, they easily dragged me into being a Stay. NoEasy holds some of my absolute favorite K-Pop songs to date, such as; Cheese, Sorry I Love You and Wolfgang to name a few. The whole Album is a no-skip, much like all the albums on this list. It always manages to make me motivated while working and has broken all my expectations of K-Pop.
The Title Song, Thunderous has crossed 250 Million Views on Youtube and the Album has won Performance of the Year 2021 and Best Album at the Golden Disc Awards 2022. Get 10% Off your NoEasy, In Life, or other Stray Kids Albums or Merch when ordering from Daebak with my code UREIGN.

Love Yourself: Tear (Vonnie's review 💕)
Tumblr media
My rating: 9/10 ♥️
What I loved
The chill, laid-back and bluesy sound it often had
The variety of styles through the album
They work so perfectly as a group; their chemistry is so strong, and this album is really no exception to that 😭💖💖
What I didn't love
I'm still getting used to the whole not understanding lyrics as I hear them thing, but that's probably the only thing that keeps me from totally enjoying their music (just a pet peeve maybe 😅💔)

Neyslutrans Review | Hatari | Is it worth the €20???
Tumblr media
If you haven’t been following this blog lately, then you should be aware that I’m a fan of Hatari. Been listening to them since their announcement to compete for Songvakeppnin 2019 and still listening to them since Eurovision 2019. In fact, I somewhat interact with the Reddit community in r/hatari.
So when it was announced that Hatari’s newest album was going to be released on the 17th of January, I was really excited! I mean, the hype train started to take motion when someone in the subreddit showed their YouTube copyright claims on their hatari videos.
After giving it some time and listening to it once or twice, here are my thoughts on Hatari’s newest album – Neyslutrans.
PS: I will try to be unbiased as possible
First Impressions
Listening to the whole album gave me Muse – Resistance and Drones vibes. I guess it’s the orchestral music that gave me that feeling, along with the fact that the songs in the album are about hopelessness or submitting to the inevitability of the end.
Album art is quite off-putting in my opinion. I guess I just don’t know the context and people are saying that the girl featured will be seen in the upcoming Engin Miskunn music video (still unconfirmed).
What I want to discuss though is the price of the album. This, I want to compare it to K-pop album, more specifically – BTS Love Yourself: Answer.
You see, in the new Hatari album, there are 5 songs that were sold in other albums and singles. And some of them existed WAYYY before Hatari was announced for Songvakeppnin (eg: Spillingardans [2018]).
youtube
So we’re paying €20 for an album with 8 new songs.
If we compare this with BTS albums, Answer had songs come back from the ‘Her’ and ‘Tear’ versions like Fake Love, Singularity, Best of me, etc. This album cost similar to how much I will be paying for Neyslutrans (thanks Australia). So despite my ‘fomo’ kicking in, part of me is also like ‘Is it worth getting the album if I’m being sold similar songs‘?. I mean, I know singles get released before the final product but they’re usually at least 1 or 2 in a 10 song album.
Ok, so apparently, people didn’t like the BTS comparison (fair nuff, people don’t like Kpop). The reason I chose those albums is becuse it shares a similar point about releasing the same songs over and over and you question how much you’re paying for. But since nobody liked it, here is a new one.
Sergey Lazarev – Russia’s representative in 2016 and 2019. Whenever he releases albums (or his older ones at least), some of the songs, at least 3 or 4, came from other singles from a a year ago or two like Lucky Stanger or Идеальный мир (idealniy mir). In Discogs, an album is like $60 inc shipping.
This is where the song review kicks in.
Song Reviews
Side note: getting my translations here!
Spillingardans, Klámstrákur, Klefi / صامد (featuring Bashar Murad)
These songs are from the existing singles that were released prior. If you want to thoughts prior, here is my review for Klamstakur and Spillingardans was briefly mentioned here.
For Klefi, it’s a good collab with Bashar Murad. Icelandic with Arabi is an interesting language mix that somewhat worked well in the song.
Engin Miskunn
Good first song. It sets the mood on what to expect and the general theme of Hatari. That there is no mercy, that they live through this dystopia where all hope and love is lost. That the end is near if we don’t do something about it.
Þræll
Literally one of my fave songs in the album. On the surface level, it sounds like a song about being a submissive in a sexual relationship/arrangement. I do question if it’s a healthy one or are we dealing with something ‘lowkey abusive’ as portrayed in Fekete Részem by AWS (Hungary 2018).[Context: people think that based on the song’s music video, that it’s an abusive sexual relationship that he’s not enjoying]
youtube
Tumblr media
Hlauptu (featuring CYBER)
This feels like a revamp from the original and I quite like it. It just sounds cleaner compared to the original so I got to appreciate it more. The intro felt more sinister which kinda match the theme of the song (I guess – I’m basing it off translations found online).
Spectavisti Me Mori, Op. 8 (featuring Pétur Björnsson) & Nunquam Iterum, Op. 12 (featuring Friðrik Margrétar)
The orchestral/choir music is just… wow. I wouldn’t say it’s amazing but it just felt alright I guess. Not that it’s bad, it’s just an interesting mix to the album itself.
14 Ár
Without knowing what the song is about, the vocal contrast between Matthias and Klemens is really interesting. Gives of a weird harmonic feeling that you rarely get when you mix screaming with heavenly falsetto.
According to Hatari-Translations, this song is about manipulation and being in a toxic relationship (or at least that’s what’s being portrayed in the lyrics).
Overall, a song about toxic relationship is interesting as it allows us to discuss how bad this is and we have the right to leave. And knowing that Matthias is the victim in the song gives off an interesting view on how we interpret him as. Cuz normally, Matthias is portrayed as the dictator (eg: Hatrid Mun Sigra) – but THE VICTIM?!?!? THE ONE WHO IS HURT!?!?!? OMG… maybe Matthias portrays the pain, hurt, and hopelessness that we feel has humans rather than a soulless/merciless leader.
Also – the title of the song in English is 14 years… 14 YEARS?!?!? OMG….
Ógleði
It’s an alright song. I don’t have that much to say about them. Ógleði is very heavenly though despite it Klemens is talking about feeling sick and disgusted. So gotta appreciate the contrast.
Helvíti (featuring Svarti Laxness)
I love rapping. Lately, I’ve been having a lowkey appreciation for Icelandic Rap (mostly from Kròli and JoiPè) so being introduced to another Icelandic rapper is quite beneficial.
This entire song is a rap – with only Svarti Laxness performing in it. The song is about being in hell or in a hell-like environment. So it’s not like he’s dead or anything. If we follow the idea that Hatari lives in a dystopian future of our society, I might assume we’re living in a Mad max/gang-like political landscape where it’s ruled by dictators. So a start of a dystopian society.
This is also another favourite song of mine in the album.
Niðurlút (featuring GDRN)
Apparently this song shares similar lyrics to Nunquam Iterum, Op. 12. I wouldn’t know cuz I don’t speak the language. I have not much to say about this song asides from it’s a good song to end the album with. It’s mellow and less harsh so it’s a good way to conclude it all.
Hatrið Mun Sigra (Xtended)
So… I know Hatari is known for their jokes and ‘messing around’ but when we first found out that there was going to be an extended version, we thought more was going to be added, like new lyrics. But instead, the first few beats of the intro at the start was just played three times before the snare kicked in. So literally, nothing was added and it’s just the same song.
As a Hatari fan, I kinda got the joke… sort off. They like to mess around, be hypocrites, and sometimes don’t take interviews seriously. But as a listener and a Eurovision fan, this kinda infuriated me because I was kinda hoping for more. You can’t put just ‘xtended’ to a song and put something that little.
To my current knowledge, 2 Eurovision song had extended versions and it added more meaning to the one that was submitted. An example – Dance You Off by Benjamin Ingrosso (Sweden 2018).
As you can see, more lyrics was added and it just added more meaning to the original, especially since Eurovision has a 3-minute limit to their submissions. So I guess this song begs to question ‘how much are we paying for, for the name itself‘.
Overall thoughts – Is it worth the €20???
At the end of the day, music is hard to produce and after visiting Iceland in 2019, I learned that making CD’s in the country is even harder. For me, I will buy it since I’m a fan of the band, the songs are good, and it’s nice to have a physical copy.
The songs are good. Nice to see some singles return (but it’s odd since they’re from 2018 and prior). The album kinda messes around the theme on purchasing something cuz of the band name itself (in regards to the idea of buying something) and the idea of various forms of dystopias/forms of hopelessness (song-wise). The song likes play with various themes of society, relationships, mental health, politics that it’s quite nice and fits into what Hatari is about.
I’d give it 4/5 – mostly because I’d like to hear a cleaner version of other songs that were performed live like Dansið eða deyið and fans thought it was gonna be there but wasn’t. I guess I wanted more variety in the albums rather than just hearing similar songs for nearly half of the album.

Review of the Love Yourself Series
Disclaimer: These are my personal opinions and you’re allowed to disagree with them. I base my opinions off of my own personal taste and my experience with all of BTS’ discography. I don’t claim to be an expert in music, but I do love music and BTS is the first group whose music I really truly grew to love in a long time. A lot of these were my opinions before I saw them live on tour, and my feelings towards some of the songs have definitely changed, so I made a second part with my review of the concert set list.
I understand that a group’s sound can change over time and I encourage and appreciate growth and experimentation from artists, and there are particular songs in the LY Series that I think BTS did extremely well considering it was their first time trying some of these genres.
LY: Her
Her has a really solid set for a mini-album. MIC Drop Remix was the first BTS song I ever heard and it was completely different from anything I’d ever heard and enough to draw my interest.
I know some people gripe about DNA, and while I will admit it’s more “pop” than I’d expect from BTS, it’s still a really, really good pop song. Same thing for Best of Me, they took a beat that was pretty common in my opinion and made an awesome song.
Dimple is actually one of my favorites from Her, it was the first BTS song (aside from MIC Drop) to get stuck in my head, and I was glad to see it have a place on Answer. I always enjoy vocal-line songs, and this is no exception.
I personally think Pied Piper is a masterpiece and it’s one of my all-time favorite songs (hence the blog title). I love when BTS does more experimental, funky sounds, and I think Pied Piper was done so, so well. There’s also a lot of subtext in this song, and when you consider the elements used in the song coupled with the lyrics, I think it brings across the meaning of the song really well. It’s a bit of a sinister song (“I’m taking over”) disguised by how upbeat it is, and of course, the choreo (body rolls, anyone?).
Sea is the only hidden track in the series and it’s a hidden gem. Sound aside (and it’s a beautiful song), I think the lyrics are very important and we should pay attention to it’s meaning. Sea is an example of what I think BTS does best – a song with deep, melancholy lyrics that is still really nice in sound and catchy.
BTS’ hype songs are always fun and I really like Go Go, even the choreo is one of my favorites, and it is another example of a type of song that BTS consistently does really well.
Finally, Outro: Her. It’s very different from what we’ve heard from rap-line before, but their experimentation paid off and it’s a really good song. It’s a huge contrast from the Cyphers, but it’s still just as good in quality even if it’s not as hype. I’m particularly fond of the beat and I really like how it has a 90s hip-hop feel.
(I’m saving Serendipity for Answer btw so I can talk about the full length version.)
LY: Tear
Singularity I felt was a great intro for Tear and is just a really awesome song for Taehyung. It’s actually my favorite of his performances thus far and he was really able to show off his strengths as a vocalist. I really like the contrast between the sexy sound of the song and the sad lyrics. The MV is prob my favorite of all the “intros,” the production and aesthetics were so good, and Tae did so well with the acting and choreography.
FAKE LOVE is actually really good. I overplayed it a bit when Tear came out (streaming will do that to a person) but after a while I grew to love it, and I think it’s a really great song, perfect for a title track. It’s different from anything they’ve done before, and the sound is very unique. I particularly like the lyrics a lot (and believe that it’s a not-so subtle message to fans). I’m a huge fan of Jimin’s performance in this song in particular, and my only complaint is that I would have liked to hear a bit more desperation from Jungkook and Tae in their vocals during the chorus (hehe).
The Truth Untold… The first BTS song that has ever made me cry, and on the first listen too. Jin is always really good at conveying emotion in his singing and it was when he came in that the first tear fell. I was also really impressed with Jungkook’s performance as well. Jimin and Tae also did really well, it’s an all-around solid song and one of the best on Tear. The lyrics are seriously so sad and beautiful, but you don’t even need to know what they are saying to get the feeling of the song.
134340. I cannot put into words how much I love this song, it actually competes with Pied Piper for my favorite BTS song. It’s sooo different but sooo good. Everyone did amazing, I love the rap verses and the vocals. Just a really amazing song, it doesn’t sound like typical BTS, but again, that’s not a problem since the song is just that amazing. It’s probably the most experimental song in the series and it paid off so well, and this is example of a strength for BTS, that they are able to try out different genres and still pull it off near flawlessly. This is also an example of the quality of music I expect from BTS.
Paradise is the silent killer of Tear and of the series in general. On first listen it’s okay, but the more time you spend with it, the more you appreciate it. I think the rap verses and Jimin really make the song (my ears are Jimin-biased, what can I say?). Definitely one of the most underrated song on Tear.
Love Maze is good, another song that Jimin really stands out in. I actually like Love Maze more than Airplane Pt. 2 and would have preferred to see this in the promotions for Tear instead. Which brings me to…
Airplane Pt. 2. I like that they wanted to build off of J-Hope’s Airplane, a song that I really, really like, but I think it fell short of the original. At first it’s really catchy and they still did a good job with it, going for a more latin feel, but it became kinda old really quick for me and I still prefer original Airplane over it. It is a song that I thought had potential for Western GP, but it wasn’t really promoted over here…
Magic Shop is a nice song, very Jungkook, and that made me want to love it more than I actually do. It’s still nice to listen to but the production isn’t my favorite. Compared to Love is Not Over, the last song JK did production on, I feel like I’m left wanting with Magic Shop. I do love the lines “You show me the best of me, so you’ll show you the best of you” and it’s very cute as a fan song.
Anpanman is another great hype song, loved it almost immediately and it’s super catchy. When I played it for non-BTS fans it was the song they liked the best, and again, it’s something BTS does really well.
So What kind of feels like the obligatory EDM song on the album lol. I see its appeal more for the concerts than as a contribution to the album, it kinda sticks out too much. I’m very fond of the bridge and the end though, and Jimin’s vocals make the song for me.
And finally Outro: Tear. It’s probably the best song on Tear the album, maybe even the series as a whole. Rap line did phenomenal. The intro sampling the highlight reel contrasts the rest of the song in the best way. Each member’s verses are just really, really good. Yoongi tried something different with the vocals and he did it really well, and the other two had really solid delivery. Another song I couldn’t wait to see live.
LY: Answer
I had somewhat unfavorable opinions on Answer. I didn’t want Answer to be a repackage; I would have preferred another mini-album, but I was pleasantly surprised by the way the songs were set up on disc A and how there are clear divisions between each part of the series. I didn’t expect so much vocal line and rap line division, but it all still works really well.
This may be an unpopular opinion, but I actually like when each member gets to do solo stuff, it’s such a better way to gauge their individual talents and skills, and you can appreciate them all the more, so I was really happy to see that rap line got to do solos even if I didn’t expect it. And the collection of vocal line “intros” is also really good.
Euphoria took me some getting used to, I actually didn’t listen to any of the “bootleg” versions made after the Wonder video came out, but I was happy to find that I liked the official version a lot, particularly the bridge. Jungkook did really well with this song, and I think it had everything that Begin lacked.
Trivia: Just Dance is immediately catchy and soooo Hobi, it’s really, really good and he did a great job. He really captured his love of dance in the song and I’m happy he got to do a song like this.
Serendipity… I can go on and on about Serendipity. When I started introducing myself to BTS I started with Her and moved backwards with the discography, and I thought the intro version was so beautiful (albeit a little too short). It was the first BTS song I truly loved, and at that point in time I didn’t realize it was only sung by Jimin, nor did I know any of the members’ names. It’s a song that reminds me of what falling in love with BTS felt like, but aside from my personal attachment to it, Serendipity is just a really pretty song. Jimin is perfect for it, his soft and sweet voice really complements the message, and I felt like he really captured the feeling of what it’s like to be in love, to be happy in love. I was really hoping they would release a full version of Serendipity and I was thrilled when it was announced on the track list, and the added bridge is so beautiful. It’s a huge contrast to Lie, but I like it almost as much as I love Lie, because what really sells me is the emotion Jimin puts into his singing.
Trivia: Love is different from what I expected from Namjoon but it’s done so well and it’s also really catchy. The lyrics are genius of course, as I expected from him. I’m very pleased with this song and couldn’t wait to sing along to it at the concert.
Trivia: Seesaw gets my vote for best song on Answer. Again, it’s something very different from what I expected from Yoongi, but the production quality is so, so good. We get to hear his vocals and the song is refreshing. It’s kind of chill, but you still get this sense of regret and acceptance. It’s almost like an “answer” to Tear. He got the emotions so right, this song is just beautiful, and he continued with the surprises by including a choreo in the performance, so hats off to you, Yoongi.
I was really, really, really excited for Epiphany. I’m a huge fan of Jin’s vocals, to me he is the best at conveying emotion through his singing and I live for his song covers and Awake, so I was really looking forward to his solo, and I was not at all disappointed. Epiphany is a perfect song for Jin, and I was so pleased to hear that he had a hand in its creation. Like The Truth Untold, you don’t need to understand the lyrics to get the feeling of the song.
I can’t rank any of the solos in terms of favorites, because each solo is so essentially the member that performed it, it would be like ranking the members and I refuse to do that, but I do think that the Trivias stand out the most in terms of production quality.
In general, I think BTS’ rap-line is very special and they have real gems with each of the three rappers. I know rap line is already involved in all their music, but I’d actually like to see more involvement in the future. Yoongi once mentioned how he would like to do a whole album with just the seven of them, and I do believe they could make a really, really good album. I was impressed with all of the rap line solos but I can’t say that I was surprised, as I’ve come to expect high quality music from them, and they did not disappoint at all.
As for the group songs, IDOL is actually my favorite of the Answer group songs. I know the boys said it was something different for them, but all I heard was BTS. It’s like their hype songs and is like essential BTS, it played upon their strengths and I was happy to see more rap line parts in a title track. If I had to compare FAKE LOVE and IDOL, I’d say that FL is more vocal-heavy and is a great song for the vocalists to shine, but IDOL was a bit more equal (save for Jin’s parts…). It’s probably one of my favorite title tracks, it’s my favorite MV second to Blood Sweat & Tears, I love the energy and the camp, and the lyrics are so clever. IDOL has everything that I love about BTS and I love that they respectfully borrowed from other cultures and still made the song their own. I also think it had Western GP appeal, but alas...
I will  admit though, I was disappointed with the other group songs on Answer. It’s not that the songs were bad, they are catchy enough and are nice to listen to, but I wasn’t really impressed, not the way I was when I first started listening to all of BTS’ pre-Tear discography.
I’m Fine... For a song that (I assume) was supposed to serve as counterpart to Save Me, I was pretty disappointed. Save Me is one of my favorite songs by BTS, I really like the contrast between the upbeat tempo and the melancholy lyrics, and I don’t mind the EDM elements when it’s mixed with the boys’ voices. The vocals and the rap verses stand out a lot to me in Save Me, but not so much in I’m Fine. I do like the pre-chorus and the bridge, Jimin’s parts are my favorite parts of the song (surprise!), but I would have liked more from rap line. Namjoon did mention they struggled to write for this song and I can see why. I do appreciate that the lyrics mirror Save Me’s lyrics, but I personally think they could have done better. I will say that opinion could be skewed since I was betting so much on it being like Save Me, and after listening to it on repeat I do like it, it’s pretty, the choreo is interesting, but it’s not my favorite.
Answer: Love Myself sounds like an end credits song (lol), but I don’t mind that so much because it’s the song that ends the series. But it does seem a little anticlimactic for the final song of the series. The way the series had been going, with Her and Tear ending each album respectively, I knew that Answer was going to be the last song and that it would have all the boys, but I would have liked it to match Her and Tear a bit more, and it seems out of place with the other two. That being said, I do like the lyrics. “You show me I have reasons I should love myself” almost made me cry when I heard the song for the first time, and I think it’s a really great song to end their concerts with. I would have liked something a little more iconic, something more like Spring Day, and it’s missing BTS’ edge, what sets them apart from others, but it still does the job.
All in all, the Love Yourself series was quite an accomplishment for BTS, not just with the music they created but also with the sales and awards they won for it. The theme of “love yourself” is a very beautiful and important message, and their exploration of the concept through the series was very enjoyable. Her was a fabulous introduction to BTS’ discography for me (and I’m sure many other people) and Tear and the new songs from Answer were good enough to keep me sold on BTS. I am truly excited to see what the future holds for them music-wise, and I have a lot of faith that whatever they do will be brilliant.

The latest album from the masters of the K-pop formula is a slick, loosely thematic album about love and loss, with a stronger focus on rapping than ever before.
The latest album from the masters of the K-pop formula is a slick, loosely thematic album about love and loss, with a stronger focus on rapping than ever before.
K-pop has long been poised for a breakthrough in the U.S., and the stars have aligned for the Korean boy band BTS. It doesn’t hurt that it is easier now than ever to be a K-pop fan on this side of the world, with the genre being tailor-made for our current algorithm-fed content chain. BTS has seized the opportunity, building a ravenous fanbase, not just at home and stateside but in South America and Europe as well. Bangtan Boys (their full name, Bangtan Sonyeondan, translates to “bulletproof boy scouts” in English), are designed for this moment, highly curated, aesthetically optimized for Western consumption.
BTS have been presented as the art-house alternative to K-pop’s manic energy: a modish, dilettantish, act whose music is a vehicle for larger artistic choices and statements. After debuting as a swag rap outfit, they evolved from rap-sung mashups to posh electro-pop pageantry. The concept for their 2016 album, Wings, was inspired by Hermann Hesse’s 1919 book Demian. The visuals for one of the best BTS songs, “Blood Sweat & Tears,” were picturesque stills framed in a pop-up museum featuring “The Fall of the Rebel Angels,” Michelangelo’s “Pietà,” and Nietzsche quotes etched in stone, which all produced dramatic fan readings of the video’s symbolism. The members co-write and co-produce their songs, some of which delve into mental wellness and social responsibility, a process that has led many to dub their songs more “personal,” a word sometimes used as a dog whistle for music appealing to be taken more seriously. Their tactics have been emulated by boy bands who have followed, but in many ways, BTS are simply the K-pop model maximized for efficiency.
Love Yourself: 轉 ‘Tear’, which follows the 2017 mini album Love Yourself: ‘Her’ and the Japanese full-length Face Yourself released earlier this year, is a kaleidoscopic mark of that efficiency, observing the finely tuned formula BTS have been perfecting since 2015. ‘Tear’, like ‘Her’, is a concept album of sorts. Roughly half the songs adhere to the album’s subhead. If ‘Her’ was an assortment of heart-professing love songs, then ‘Tear’ is the inverse. It deals primarily, though not exclusively, with the cycle of grief that lingers through a separation. But all of the songs generally find their way back around to self-love at some point. The album’s opener, “Intro: Singularity,” provides its thesis. “Even in my momentary dreams/The illusions that torture me are still the same,” V sings. “Did I lose myself, or did I gain you?”
Written and arranged with longtime producer and frequent collaborator Pdogg and Big Hit label CEO Hitman Bang along with a team of collaborators (Steve Aoki, MNEK, Chainsmokers co-producer DJ Swivel), ‘Tear’ aims for cohesion and produces fun, prismatic songs in the process. There is some level of thematic consistency on ‘Tear’ with at least a semblance of an emotional arc being teased out across the 11 tracks: navigating a dream world and the real one in search of a personal paradise (which at times reads like an analog for being a pop star, especially on “Airplane Pt. 2”), losing love and facing the requisite anxieties and loneliness. These all come to a head on the foreboding lead single “Fake Love,” characterized in full by a lyric that roughly translates to: “I grew a flower that couldn’t bloom/In a dream that can’t come true.”
K-pop is often experimental in form and function, which produces full-lengths that can be spasmodic in tone and quality. BTS aren’t immune to this, but the rappers—RM (or Rap Monster), J-Hope, and Suga—anchor the group, not only keeping it moored to a unified aesthetic amid constant stylistic shifts but dictating much of what happens in the music. On the bruising, all-rap closer “Outro: Tear,” the three take turns ripping through the track with punchy cadences, at times suddenly swapping places. The group’s vocalists trade off short, sweet passages that revolve around and often pivot off of rapped verses. Where rap verses are often stopgaps for other K-pop groups, obligatory aspects of pop roleplaying, they are essential to structure and composition here. Whispered, breathy raps slingshot into the supple hook on the flute-powered “134340.” On “Love Maze,” RM balances elastic syllabics with singsong musings while Suga dashes into a tightly twisting flow. Between them, the other members let loose mellow, honeyed coos. The sequencing of the vocal routines is as carefully synchronized as the choreography in their videos.
‘Tear’ isn’t as ambitious or stunning or tragic as Wings, which gave each of the seven members a solo turn ranging from lounge-ready piano balladry and symphonic, single-spotlight melodrama to brooding alt-rap with “Blood Sweat & Tears” as its ideological and aesthetic centerpiece. But there are moments here when BTS seem more poised and more in sync than ever. The Aoki-produced “The Truth Untold” is an epic misdirection; instead of leaning into their EDM-flavored pop or the blitzing trap of Aoki’s “Mic Drop” remix, they opt for a seamless piano serenade wherein the group’s four singers weave in and out of each stanza. “Paradise” is largely propelled by graceful exchanges from Jungkook, V, and Jimin, who surface and retreat gently. Across Love Yourself: 轉 ‘Tear’, BTS are at their best when they feel for and support one another.

love yourself: tear.
YESSSSSS! it’s finally here. our boys have released their long-awaited album. i am incredibly proud of them, and how far they have come. this album as a whole consists of various genres, and i appreciate how much experimenting they did with this album. now we are going to take it track-by-track.
intro: singularity. this track has it’s own post because of the insanely incredible video that came out to introduce us to this new era or love yourself: tear. here is my post on this beautiful track
fake love. this track has it’s own post once again because too many thoughts and feels and gifs to contain in this one post. here is the post for fake love.
the truth untold. the true beauty of this song is the translations behind it. i am obsessed with their minds. the thoughtfulness that went into each lyric and line is incredible. “i can’t show you me, give you me.” hiding from who you are, but still wanting that person. they are telling a beautifully tragic story, and the pain within their voices really shines. the simple piano in the background perfectly highlighting the story and the emotions. then in the bridge, my goodness the build-up of emotions just releasing. dang, so much is happening and even without reading the translations you feel it and experience the song. music truly is a language in of itself. (p.s. cannot wait for what steve aoki does with this track again)
134340 (PLUTO). tae once again attacking me with vocals. this vibe is the epitome of chill car ride vibes. i love the mix of rap and vocal lines in this track, it is so perfect and smooth. the meaning and metaphor of pluto circling, dang our lyrical geniuses strike again.
paradise. one of my faves off the album (but let us be real, every one of these tracks has been on repeat). i am obsessed with jungkook’s  “marathon marathon” line. a reality check with looking at translations. i love the meaning of needing to stop and enjoy life and not always having a destination. enjoy life! live in your own life and dream big or small whichever it is your dream so it’s beautiful. this song is an ultimate bop, and i love the free vibe just makes you want to sway and bop your head. bangtan has truly mastered the balance of rap and vocal lines in this track. i am obsessed!
love maze. this one is also one of my faves. like dang that opening! “lost in the maze in the darkness”. jungkook’s opening line, my goodness such feels. this track is set apart. my goodness, the back and forth between the vocalists. i love the electronic track behind this bop.
magic shop. this one though. like for real, the song dedicated to army. my goodness gracious, our wonderful kings. once again don’t know who allowed taetae to come out and slay my life like this. namjoon’s raps are insanely powerful you know he is preaching his truth throughout this track. when the king of vocals seokjin and jimin come in, it just translates the beauty and balance of knowing everything will be okay. i especially love listening and watching the live performances of this song, when army sings back. my goodness, it is truly beautiful. it is a sad track with bangtan being honest about their fears and hurts, but it is offset with hopes and knowing that with army everything will be okay. these lines: TT
you gave me the best of me
so you’ll give you the best of you
you found me, you recognized me
you gave me the best of me
so you’ll give you the best of you
you will it, the galaxy inside of you
so show me
i’ll show you
here is the end of the comeback show with bts and army singing together. it had me in a puddle of tears. those smiles. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJ_lafEprL0
side note: if you want to cry just listen to “the truth untold” and “magic shop” back to back.
airplane pt. 2. i was so hyped to see this track on the album. ready to hype up my man hoseok any chance i get. the vibes of this track are so unique, i love the latin track. talking to all those haters who said you can’t do it, here they are traveling all over the world writing music living life to the fullest. this live performance though! the use of props, the outfits, it was everything.
Tumblr media
my goodness, the mic going back and forth between seokjin and namjoon, i am living my best life.
Tumblr media
p.s. these little munchkins teasing this dance move in jungkook’s japan vlog.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
p.s.s. watch it if you haven’t already G.C.F. in Osaka
anpanman. this song is “go go”’s best friend. it is so fun and hype. i love that it is based off on an actual superhero. i love this live performance as well. it is preciousness to the next level. all about moving past your fears and taking control. the vocalists slaying the background and those runs, my heart cannot take it. (this is one of my sister’s favorites from the album, and she actually tolerates me playing it in the car so that is a win for me!)
Tumblr media
jungkook shaking/fluttering tae-tae’s shirt to look like he is flying is only the start of the preciousness of that is in this performance.
Tumblr media
all of these anpanman performance videos are insanely bright and cute as heck.
Tumblr media
so what. my goodness, i love this track! i literally just want this track to completely surround me, this is a track made for surround sound, in your car driving down a long road kind of music. “young and wild and free” that’s right jimin and tae-tae. we just got to keep going and don’t worry about things around you, and just “let it go”.
outro: tear. our boys slaying with their cypher outros. this track is very electronic, and bass heavy. i am definitely a rap-line stan, and really got into bangtan because of these amazingly talented dudes. without looking at translations you know that they are extremely passionate about their lines. i am obsessed with the vocalists namjoon, hoseok, and yoongi. i love that they are going out of their comfort zones a little bit with this track. people need to stop sleeping on these outro tracks they are the new cypher, and i love them! p.s. who allowed them to breathe at the end of the track, like that was a personal attack on my life and well being.
the promotions.
billboard music awards. my goodness, i am incredibly proud of these boys. they have come so far, making dreams come true. i love that they let some of the fan chants live, i love that army was respectful and showed their strength during the performance. thank you to the cameramen who stepped up their game from last year. still room for improvement but we are thankful as always.
Tumblr media
i have to include this gif because our maknae worked hard for those abs, and they deserve recognition.
Tumblr media
our boys stole the show with their reactions and dance moves.
Tumblr media
mnet’s bts comeback show. once again they serve us bangtan on a silver platter. i love watching these even though i only know about 50% of what is going. i love the performances and quirky little sketches. i especially loved tae and jimin’s cafe adventures and english studies. and namjoon’s drama tease.
Tumblr media
my favorite interview was zach sang show! he is such an army, and i am appreciative of all that he does for bts when they come around. i appreciate all the time he puts into his research, and he deserves lots of army support.
the ellen show. i loved all the segments they did! i loved tae-tae’s proud english moment. i especially loved the range of reactions from bangtan when she scared them.
youtube
the late late show with james corden performance. i love this friendship. low-key eighth member of bts.
Tumblr media
nevermind high-key member.
Tumblr media
their faces when they saw the puppies for the buzzfeed interview.
Tumblr media
now we await the upcoming tour and next comeback...eventually.

Author’s Note: I’m trying to keep track of the amazing BTS-themed series and fics that I’m reading on Tumblr, so I decided to create this post with some short reviews (so I can have them all in one place). These writers are amazing and they keep me coming back for more. They are all smutty as hell and full of amazing characters and conflicts.  This is by no means a comprehensive list, and I will be adding them as more catch my eye. Check them out if you get a chance!
Mafia AUs
The Birdcage  & the sequel The Lion’s Den by @untaemedqueen
