you know sometimes i think of ada!chuuya get positive affirmations and praise from other ada! members. like just, random platonic affection. ( though I don't think chuuya would react normally about it but it's ok )
i don't know, i just think chuuya is a very sad guy ngl— i think he deserves some hugs.
i mean since fukuzawa can find stray cats around the ada! building areas, i think it's possible for chuuya to find a stray puppy or two.
if this idea was a bit too silly, i shall see myself out.
Anon you get me, have some happy ada!Chuuya with friends

Ok no let me explain you a thing.
Tumblr media
I can't take it. I literally can't take this moment without making a sound somewhere in the back of my throat. It's the cutest thing ever and it's this frame here that makes it.
Look, I know this is Wan. I know Wan isn't really canon and this is the preschool episode so it's even less so. But there's something in here that is an absolutely canon thing Akutagawa does.
The scene starts off with Akutagawa's typical reverence and excitement that Dazai is sitting near him. Nothing particularly notable there. But then Dazai gets excited by what's going on and Akutagawa gives him this look and I just can't take it man.
Because that's a genuinely fond look. He's happy for him. He's happy Dazai is enjoying himself.
And that's not just a Wan thing. He says along those lines to Kyouka in one of my all-time favourite BSD scenes in general.
Tumblr media
It just. I just have a lot of feelings about that. This is a guy who, we know from Heartless Cur and the beginning of Beast, has very little in the way of emotion - but when he does feel, it's rather all-encompassing, even overwhelmingly strong. Things like rage and desperation. It's raw survival instinct.
But then he has. This too.
Here's the thing. In the preschool chapter, silly as it is, Dazai is still fixated on suicide. He has the noose, just doesn't speak about it openly. So, it's probably quite rare that Dazai shows genuine enjoyment the way he did here - and that's worth that small smile.
In the main universe, Akutagawa remembers how Kyouka hated herself to the point of asking to be killed, then sees how fierce she is about defending her new life and self, and decides that he's glad for her.
It really means something to me that one of the very few relational emotions he allows himself to feel is happiness and pride on others' behalf.
It roots itself less in compassion or happiness itself and more in a sense of respect... but remember that Akutagawa hardly gives his respect easily. He gives his respect only to those he considers strong, and in nearly every battle, he finds himself disappointed. What he wants is kind of contradictory - he wants a worthy opponent, so someone who poses a strong challenge to him to prove his own worth as one who will never be weak again... and yet, when they lose against him, he's often disappointed they did not succeed or fight harder, and looks down on them.
Atsushi's motive, or what he initially thinks his motive is, is disappointing to him at first - Akutagawa believes he is trying to prove himself as worthy of living through someone else's acceptance and berates him for it. But that's... exactly what he has been doing. Later on, he continues to question Atsushi for his motives, in yet another of one of my favourite scenes.
Tumblr media
He asks him over and over - "why?" And is not satisfied until Atsushi reveals that he's also looking to get rid of the shadow of the orphanage director that follows him like a haunting - that trauma? All that pain thrown in his face? He is fighting to overcome it. He is fighting via proof and change because Atsushi wants to live, and to not have to feel ashamed of that. And that's what it took for Akutagawa to trust him and respect him enough to transfer Rashoumon to him.
I think, on some level, Akutagawa is invested in seeing whether Atsushi will succeed in this. And I think, in spite of everything between them, he will be glad for him if he does.
I just really love this aspect to his character, because while he searches for strength in violence and power and physical skill, it means on a deeper level, he actually sees joy and resistance in the face of despair as true strength that's worth acknowledging.
I want him so badly to accept that as true strength within himself in the main timeline.
I also love it because Beast confirms that Akutagawa would do anything for his sister and I am now free to imagine Gin telling her brother all the things she was learning and how she was slowly connecting to the Black Lizard and feeling overwhelming pride for her but not really expressing that but Gin knowing that's how he felt regardless, anyways that is all
Is this even coherent anymore? Oh well.

mary h.how many bsd novels are there i thought it was just the agency aku one and the dazai one but theres more apparently?? how many different bsd spin offs are there i am so confused
OHHHH BOYS. BESTIE YOU ARE NOT READY. THERE ARE SO MANY. and i know this because i own every single novel that has an english release (i'm linking all the ones that do):
Osamu Dazai's Entrance Exam - this is the one with the Azure Messenger, infamously adapted into the present day in the middle of season 1 when it's actually set 2 years in the past as Dazai's entrance exam into the ADA.
The Untold Origins of the Detective Agency - what the title says, currently being adapted in the beginning of season 4. The novel also includes a short story set the day before Atsushi's entrance exam about the ADA planning what his exam should be.
Osamu Dazai and the Dark Era - this is one of the Dazai ones, about his time in the mafia with Ango and Oda, adapted in the beginning of season 2.
Dazai, Chuuya, Age Fifteen - another Dazai one, the one (poorly) adapted at the beginning of season 3, about how Chuuya joined the mafia. Has a currently ongoing manga adaptation.
Storm Bringer - sequel to Fifteen, longest of all the novels by far, set when Dazai and Chuuya are 16 and we find out more about Chuuya's origin story. And so much more, it really is a thicc novel.
55 Minutes - the second longest novel after Storm Bringer yet the least talked about (despite how much it elaborates on skill singularities and the nature of abilities). It's a self-contained story of the ADA going to solve a case on an artificial island off the coast of Yokohama, featuring two new ability users H. G. Wells and Jules Verne (hence a relatively sci-fi heavy novel and i wrote a 2k+ word essay analysing all the science behind it lmao)
Dead Apple - novelisation of the movie with some extra scenes and more elaboration on some details in the movie. Also has an ongoing manga adaptation with official english release.
BEAST - this is the Akutagawa in the ADA and Atsushi in the PM one, with a completed manga adaptation (also released in english) as well as a live-action movie that came out last year.
Gaiden (Another Story): Ayatsuji Yukito vs. Kyogoku Natsuhiko - the novel has no english release yet, but it's a spin-off about different ability users and i think Ango is the only recurring character from the main series there. There is an ongoing manga adaptation which does have an official english release.
The Day I Picked Up Dazai - i don't think this one is formally released yet as it was a bonus novel given out at the screening of the BEAST movie. It's divided into Side A and Side B and i haven't read this one yet but i believe it's about how Dazai and Oda first met, where each side follows the other's perspective. There's a completed fan-translation of both sides by @popopretty.
Kunikida and Katai's Magnificent Days - this is a really sweet short story about Kunikida and Katai's friendship and i have no idea where the official version is from but there is a fan-translation of it you can read here.
In addition to BEAST and Gaiden there is also Wan! which is the super cute casual chibi spin-off manga with no stakes and no angst and only vibes, it is still ongoing and has an official english release. Some of the chapters were adapted into the Wan! anime series with 12 episodes (they are shorter episodes of 10 min each) and it is literally free therapy and will give you a year's worth of serotonin!!
There is also the bsd anthology series, which are side stories written and illustrated by different mangakas, there is no official english release that i know of but you can find fan-translations of some of the side stories here and there online.
We also have bsd mayoi or Tales of the Lost, the mobile gacha game which also includes a high school AU storyline (bsd gakuen)!
Other than these, there are also several stage plays, although it's harder to find content on these in english since they are only performed in Japan.
Bsd fans are truly the most well-fed fans of all time sometimes i forget how much content we have and still we keep getting more, it's unreal

I have a question, about BEAST, what’s it’s place here? Are the beast versions different people or are they also the regular characters? Like just got the memories from BEAST?
-🕰
Self-Aware! BSD. World Building. Spin-offs
Spin-offs' (BEAST, School Au, Kindergarten Au and Wan) status are a little bit complicated.
Warning: English is my second language.
Add-on to the part
It's a little bit tricky.
Short answer - BSD Characters will either see them as 'parody/creative art', because they don't have any memories about the events and only read about them (together with you).
Or, they would treat them as another group of new people, that arrived in the new world.
Coming next, a little bit strange/overcomplicated analogue about self-awareness, main manga and spin-offs.
___
Imagine.
The big metal barrel - Main BSD Universe. Decorations of the world. Locations and places. Culture. NOT CHARACTERS!
Above the barrel there is a giant tube. From the tube, time to time a colorful cotton balls fall into the barrel.
This cotton balls are Characters from LN, Anime, Manga. When they truly introduced, they 'fall' into the main universe.
On the left side of the barrel, there are smaller buckets, full of paint. From time to time, cotton balls are picked up from the barrel and being dripped in paint.
It's events and new cannon information (example, battles, injuries).
One day, all barrels became damaged. Slowly, the paint is leaking out, and cotton balls are becoming visible from the cracks in the Big Barrel.
It's Gaining Self-Awareness.
One moment, there is no more paint left. Cotton balls are no longer dripped in paint, and new cotton balls are simply falling into the barrel.
It's how cannon chains are broken.
And one day, cotton balls are finally fallen from The Barrel. The Barrel is empty now.
That's BSD Characters leaving for the real world.
New cotton balls will still fall from the tube into the barrel, and, one day, they will fall into the same place, where previous cotton balls are now.
(Agatha Christie and any new character, that introduced after Bram Stoker)
That's what is happening in the main BSD universe.
So, into the spin-offs.
On the right side of The Barrel, there is a shelf. On the shelf there are four boxes, full of different items. These items are Spin-off characters.
Example.
White cubes - BSD School AU
Candy canes - Wan
Wooden toys - Kindergarten AU
Paintballs - BEAST AU
They can't be mixed with cotton balls, so, as long as cotton balls are in The Barrel, nothing from the boxes will be thrown into The Barrel.
In other words, until BSD Characters leave their world, all other Spin-offs characters/versions of the characters, won't become Self-Aware.
If you read spin-offs before BSD Cast get into the real world, they will see them as a show and won't have any recollection about these events.
When BSD Gang gets access to your phone, they start reading manga and watch anime with you. They don't have any reason to be in a location, where chapters events took place, had no reason to act according to the chapter events.
So, no Dazai and Fyodor chilling in Meursault, no fight between Tetchou and Kenji.
So, when you read (watch live-action) BEAST, read (watch) Wan, read about School AU or Kindergarten AU, characters will simply see it as pictures on the screen.
But, the situation is different, when BSD Characters get into the real world.
If you read spin-off after the BSD Characters got into the real world, they will become self-aware.
They will also start hearing you and seeing Little Light.
And one day, they will get into the 'main' universe, where BSD Characters were living. To the portal and instructions, that BSD Characters left for future characters.
Welcome new arrivals.
_______
What characters are different, and who are the same?
Depends, on how different characters from spin-offs are.
School and Kindergarten AU - all characters are different. But, characters, that wasn't introduced in this AU won't show up. Right now, there are no Flags in both of this AUs, so, they won't appear.
Wan - all characters are different, characters, that wasn't introduced in this AU won't show up. But, the Wan characters are very chaotic. And they are not the biggest. So, there is a problem of living arrangements.
Wan Characters height I took from this official art.
Tumblr media
BEAST - only AU, that has fewer characters, than in the BEAST novel.
BEAST AU includes Akutagawa, Atsushi, Dazai, Oda, Kyouka, Chuuya, Gin.
Other characters are too similar to the original character, so, they won't become self-aware. Moreover, the moment, BEAST AU Characters became self-aware, they would disappear.
_____
So, that's kind of all.
They are different people, and, thankfully, won't be left in an empty world, when they became self-aware.
______
Add-on.
About disappearing after gaining self-awareness
Beast characters, that are too similar to Original! Characters (Kunikida, Tanizaki and others) won't become self-aware aware, and, the moment, when Beast! Dazai, Beast! Akutagawa, Beast! Atsushi, Beast! Kyouka, Beast! Oda, Beast! Gin and Beast! Chuuya became self-aware, the simular characters will dissapeared without gaining self-awareness.
It's actually slightly similar to Oda's kids situation in the AU. They became self-aware only after their card were added in the Scout. They didn't because self-aware after death, like Oda, or after time reset.
The seven Beast characters, that became self-aware are doing well (as well as they can) and have a way to travel to the real world.

Any predictions on what is going to happen in and after this arc?
I don't think I'm very good at predictions (╥﹏╥) I really can't guess what's Dostoyevsky's deal, but if else, that makes following the current manga events all the more exciting! Again, by the looks of it we're going to find out the backstory of a character that was first introduced in 2013, so reading the last chapter was a real “whoa” moment for me. As for the guesses I can take, it really doesn't go much further than:
Whatever is going on in the last chapter between Dostoyevsky and Bram is probably going to lead to Bram's demise as it was shown in chapter 102.
I think there's likely some connection between the scars (?) on Bram's face and the way medieval Dostoyevsky displayed an analogous one in the last chapter, because they're too similar to be put there randomly.
Something I haven't seen being brought up is the possibility of Dostoyevsky being able to time travel rather than be eternal, which even though doesn't feel like the most convincing explanation, I feel like it's too soon to fully exclude either?
Jokes aside, I don't think Akutagawa has any real chance to play a role in this, because it's evidently something that's happened in the past. And though the author looves time traveling shenanigans, that feels a bit of a stretch. Although the last attire we saw Akutagawa in did resemble a medieval aesthetic, so who knows if he doesn't have some other kind of connection to the events…
But I DO feel like the change in appearance must be telling of some new alliance. Likely something from Europe. We know the author is probably going to move the focus to European authors next, they already seemed to suggest so in an interview, and if God allows it it's finally going to be time for Agatha and the Order of the Clock Tower.
I. Idk. Have been growing an underlying suspicion that the 2-hours-later sskk scene is going to be a spinoff movie to come some time in the future. It's going to feature time traveling shenanigans (see the very limited timeframe skip) and Fukuchi coming back in a new weird form and sskk getting their rematch with him I have been saying they narratively deserve. Overall it's something that won't be covered by the manga à la Dead Apple, standalone and that can be skipped past. It does make sense marketing wise because it'll be years before the manga will have released enough content for another anime season, and given that the bsd franchise is comparatively very popular right now, I highly doubt they'll let the hype slowly die– that's also why I'm waiting for the announcement of a new Wan anime season any day now. I've said before it doesn't look like we're getting the cool sskk scene in the manga soon, and that it most likely solved the purpose of a teaser for the next arc for various reasons; the last chapter seemingly skipping past it seems now to confirm that. The very high quality of the animation of that scene in the anime might be a further hint in the movie direction, to be honest. (I'm only now realizing that if that's true, it means that we are not getting that scene in Harukawa's art style, and am suddenly hating everything and not want it to become true). That said, a Stormbringer movie seems likely too, so who knows.
Back to chapter 113. The jokes about Dazai not being included in the ada family picture are hilarious, and I do personally believe Dazai is more distant to the rest of the ada than other members; that said, I doubt it has anything to do with the panel itself, and as of now I don't think it's that deep ahah. In general, I find it very hard to believe that Dazai is the one that's going to be transferred to the pm: that feels to me a quite lazy direction to take storytelling wise. We already saw what it's like to have Dazai in the pm, no need to relapse to that. That's why, regretfully, I doubt Atsushi is going to be taken in either, because we already know what pm Atsushi is like (VERY very regretfully for me. Because I'd love more Atsushi screentime and because my brain quite automatically makes a jump from “Atsushi joins the pm” to “sskk canonly live together”. Also all the “sskk are Double Black 2.0” that has been tormenting sskk shippers since the start of time, might as well make them the New Double Black for real this time.). Tanizaki sounds like a good bet to be honest: because, on top of being the only ada member with a completely unexplored backstory, we already saw him interact with the pm a lot over the course of the whole manga, which can be taken as a slow build-up for the moment he ends up joining their ranks; from the pm perspective, since he showed to be a challenge for them in more than one occasion (he even intruded the boss' chambers once), it would make sense to try and get him on their side. And Tanizaki having already volunteered to join them in chapter 65. Honestly, everything seems to point in that direction right now.
I hope the following chapters also explain why taking the sword off Bram didn't kill him as previously established because as of now the seemingly plot hole is bothering me a lot.
That's all that comes to my mind right now, excited to see what the manga will be up to next!

Question... I am utterly confused by bsd stuff because there's so much of it like I've watched the anime, watched wan, read the canon manga, read the beast manga, but there's also like a billion light novels and side manga things and stuff ? And i do not know where they are ? You don't have to respond of course, i just don't know how to continue
anon i believe this is the complete and comprehensive masterlist you're looking for
you can also find the light novels here + gaiden
and here is a new website with translations for the fifteen manga + the latest main manga and wan chapters

BUNGOU STRAY DOGS WAN ! CHAPTER 138
I will move faster since I late 7 chapter as now, so if things looking good I gonna post 2-3 days every chapter
I heard something like “Genshin should got new version info around Jun 7″, you know what I really excited about next lore at Chasm...
Then ZZZ had trailer too, tbh I don’t really like the arts, it’s kind remind me of Danganronpa don’t kill me plus no ikemen so far (lol) so well let’s see the finish version later~ I want ZZZ to be like PUBG in term of gameplay. Plus I’m in waiting for newest Code Geass mobage in 4 days~ can’t wait ! I pretty much an Code Geass fans afterall~
This time is about Dark Era again ! I always love having this chapter, we don’t have those three banter again in normal BSD afterall~
Like always english and japanese aren’t my things so let me slide please~ (lol)

hello!! thank you for answering my question (fukuchi seeing himself in the hunting dogs). I love hearing about them. they make me sick
but. I just like putting the dogs together and seeing what they do. I would like personal hunting dog interactions. maybe not in a professional work setting, but like a company dinner. but I also fear that I would accidentally mischaracterize them in order to fit my own vision JDHRUF does that make sense?
I put a lot of sentimentality into the characters I like and i fear it turns them into something that they are not.
anyway. sorry if this is word vomit nonsense I just want them to be Happy.
oh i completely get you!!
one thing i really like about the earlier seasons of bsd is that a lot of it is just focused on character interactions and establishing dynamics. the newer arcs have been good too, but id love to see an arc similar to the first one where we see all the new characters doing stuff and interacting with each other out of combat or work.
especially for the hunting dogs. i would do anything for more hunting dogs in casual context. they’re all fun characters with very different personalities and seeing them interact just for fun would be really nice.
if you haven’t seen them yet, there’s the shopping anthology and the tag anthology as well as the tachihara-disguise omake for some extra content. there’s also bsd wan although i don’t have chapter numbers since i am having a hard time finding them all (many websites are missing a ton of chapters).
also. to you saying you’re afraid of mischaracterization, if you have some situations or topics you think they could discuss let me know or something and we can work together to figure out what would be said :) i read the hunting dogs chapters a LOT so im getting more and more used to how they act. i can’t say im perfect at characterization but ill try my best :)
anyways. i also want to see more interactions between them. they’re genuinely my favourite group in the series i love them to bits and just want them to be happy :((

Akutagawa and Atsushi for the send me a character thing? 👀👀 I'm curious to know what your first impression of Akutagawa was like. I hope you're having a sweet day / night!!
Akutagawa
First impression: i didn't think too much of him besides "cool ability" methinks? then started warming up to him properly when starting to learn abut his story + development.
Impression now: I love him so much,,,,,
Favorite moment: if I had to pick just one, I think it'd be the "the words of your past" sskk scene (I also adore the fight against Fukuchi but I'm still sobbing).
Idea for a story: aus aside, the whole "established routine at the Aku siblings place with Tachi and Atsushi being around often" is Very Tempting.
Unpopular opinion: as funny as the omake where he shows his salary details to Atsushi is... I don't really see how that could be seen as him being a big spender/classist even (and I've seen a bunch). Like, spending a ton in durable clothes I can see, but not idk, gold-coated food.
Favorite relationship: Gin and Atsushi, I don't think I have to say why. Also Chuuya, for obvious reasons too.
Favorite headcanon: from an rp plot, the Akus adopting a kitten (the one from that wan chapter specifically). Also trans gay Aku, and Gin gifting him one of those reversible octopus plushies that only gets angrier as an inside joke.
Atsushi
First impression: I had a bit of a softer spot for Atsushi bcs I liked his will to go on and how he remained kind despite everything, but he didn't got the Fav™ status till longer.
Impression now: one of my Faves™ from bsd and one of the characters I write about the most, I love him.
Favorite moment: same as Akutagawa bcs they mirror each other, and how he goes all the way to save Kyoka.
Idea for a story: I have a ton, but to add something new... I wanna tackle more my idea about him basically having religious guilt (since the orphanage looks like a church and there's the director's design too, etc) specially around sex (there won't be straight up smut but there'll be signs). Mostly bcs, I've done/I'm doing it on rp but hadn't really used it for fic yet.
Unpopular opinion: I hope it's not that unpopular but, pls, give this boy his sass. He canonically has it.
Favorite relationship: To nobody's surprise, Akutagawa, Kyoka, Dazai, Lucy and Kunikida. And I'm all about sskk ant atsulucy, but ofc I can work with them platonically and so.
Favorite headcanon: transmasc Atsushi (and bi but that's soooo widespread it's kinda a given). Also he's a great cook and loves learning new recipes.

Hello there! Do you plan on translating BSD WAN 158, the new one that released yesterday? If not, do you know if anyone else plans on doing so? Thank you so much in advance (please ignore my URL)
Hi, sorry I normally don't translate the manga itself.
There are teams who do Wan translation but I guess you will need to wait for a while until chapter 158 is out. Latest chapter I have seen is 148.
Sorry I can't be up much help. If anyone has the information, please leave it in the reply. Thank you so much.
