giles/joyce
HHGHGHGHGH okay i think if it was executed in such a way in fic that wasn't just a transparent attempt to pair off buffy's parents, i wouldn't have such frustration with it, but 80 percent of the time when i see giles/joyce content it's less about the characters themselves and more about them being conveniently married off in the backdrop so that they can Both Be Happy, which is so simplistic and it murders me.
i mostly just dislike it because i feel that no one explores the fundamentally fascinating question giles/joyce raises -- giles's literal job is to kill joyce's daughter. to encourage her to die. i think i read one fic one time where giles/joyce is brought up as a possibility and giles is immediately just like "there is an attraction, but it won't work, because we are philosophically incompatible due to my position in buffy's life" and joyce is wistful but she does agree. i think there could be something really interesting in exploring that notion further -- the tension it could create -- but most of the giles/joyce stuff i see is just cutesy and not very interested in rounding out joyce's character + incorporating her moments of shitty parenting.
and also just like -- i honestly think that in his heart, giles wants a long-term relationship with someone who is fucking insane and who gives into the impulses he wishes he could give into himself. meanwhile joyce wants stability and safety and giles is neither of those things. so. they are kind of a no from me.

Brutally honest ship opinions:
Widojest is a hard pass for me to the point where it’s one of the few ship tags I have blocked. To each their own and I’m not here to yuck someone else’s yum but something about it makes me viscerally uncomfortable.
(I am intermittently answering asks for brutally honest ship opinions. Feel free to add yours to my inbox.)

I’m just picturing Ranpo trying to cheer Dazai up (and missing the mark by a mile) by being like “at least he’s just as stupid as you are!” or something like that idk. Maybe trying to tell him “it’s okay, Chuuya still has no idea how you feel about him! None whatsoever! The possibility isn’t even on his radar!”
Alskdjfjf I love these, thank you anon — and uh, this kinda sent me off in A Direction while I was mulling it over, but it’s still sorta the same vibe —

Ninerose (and/or tenrose if you have different opinions about it)
ninerose
how do i put this. i dont think it's an exaggeration to say that ninerose taught me what love looks like. like yadda yadda broken childhood home and all that, but whatever, i had my doctor who discs. and these two. oh, these two. there's so much about s1 and them that i return to again and again because it's so messy and so sweet and so. hopeful? you know? like here's the doctor, broken, and here's rose, glowing like the sun. and he becomes a better man for her sake. he makes himself worthy of being saved, yes, but she would have saved him anyway. because she loves him so, so much.
like, i know people get annoyed nowadays about how much rose there is in the fandom, how she can get a spotlight other companions never can, but like. god. she really did show up and rewire my fucking brain, and i can't even be mad about it. she's all that and more. and nine, obviously, nine's my. second favorite now, but the doctor closest to my heart forever. there's nothing that can improve my day like watching an episode from s1 and seeing the two of them interact, there really isn't.
tenrose
i do actually have different thoughts on these! simply because all variations of the doctor get slightly different thoughts. i mean, i don't really ship specific doctors with specific characters, if that makes sense? if they win the hearts of one doctor, then to me, they've won the hearts of all of them. so, i do ship rose with every doctor lol. but ten we got on screen so let me talk about that.
i think tenrose, the way it's written, is a perfect follow up to how ninerose set them up. you know, you've got a kiss on the doctor's side that killed him and only he remembers happening, and on rose's side, her doctor just exploded into a twink. i love how upset rose is by it. i've seen people talk about how unfair she's being or how unreasonable she is, crying because she thinks the man she was falling in love with is gone when the doctor's right there but. he exploded in front of her. she has no information on this, except to hope that it really is her doctor. god, the children in need special where they reconnect immediately post him regenerating is so important to me for this reason. this is upsetting! this isn't something that we should judge rose for not simply rolling with it! but in the end, that is her doctor. changed, slightly, to be loved is to be changed. but it's him.
and yeah, can we talk about the whole ten literally rebuilt himself to be for rose and how that fact fucks him up forever and ever <3 literally a disaster of a man, you can't do that, sir. that's not healthy!!! but i love him for that. it's so doctor-ish of him. in the wake of her becoming a goddess of time and space to save him, how could he not remake himself in her image. to be someone he thinks she will love, that can love her better. i just. sorry going to speak briefly on nine again, but i think about how the majority of the bad wolf scene is framed with every shot of him on his knees, looking up at her. how he only rises back up at the very end to kiss her and save her life in return. that's what i think ten is born out of, more than anything. that moment of terrifying, awestruck devotion, and then the choice to rise again and hope he's enough, know he's enough, to save her life.
and that is always ten. that's him in the satan pit jumping without knowing where the bottom is and then yelling in the face of the devil that he only knows of one goddess, and it's her. that's why when rose is in danger, nothing on this earth can stop him. that's why he burns up a star to say goodbye to her, because that's the only thing in the universe that could be worthy of being exchanged for even a glimpse at her. and it's him when he tries to snuff himself out during the runaway bride, and it's him when he spends so long not being able to see martha for how fantastic she is because all he can do is mourn rose, and it's him when he's so distracted by her finding him again that he gets himself shot by a DALEK.
insane to me, actually. he was literally born wrong out of love.
and not even to mention rose. let's not pretend she's not equally on this train. hello: woman who would have been okay with being trapped with him on the other end of time and the universe from home? woman who was going to ditch all the people she knew and loved in another dimension to stay with him? woman who started blasting herself haphazardly across dimensional barriers with a cannon to find him again? she's as bad as he is. i love her.
[put any ship in my ask box and i’ll give my brutally honest opinion]

Talking about using the term fan- I wonder if Dan has watched Hank Green’s new video on vlogbrothers- it’s an interesting analysis of the creator side of the parasocial relationship
really hope he watched it because it was genuinely so good! i'd love for dnp to have that kind of open discussion about their perception of their community now and how they think of us as a collective/what emotions they feel when thinking about their community

Do you think ur going to do a review or analysis of the live action? Because even tho i kinda liked it i think i have the same problem that you have with the characters, like zoro. It's weird bc i think that the characterization of the characters is kinda good, but also there's something laking, i think it's the removal of some core senes but honestly idk fully if it's that or something else. I know they had short time to adapt like 90 chapters, but i think the time they had would be better used if they didn't had the b plot be abt garp. Tho that's also not right, bc i think some of the scenes with the marines were fun? But in this case i think garp characterization is just not that great.
Idk its super weird bc i feel the world is really one piece and it was fun to watch but there's some things that are kinda :/
Okay uh, let me preface this by saying part of my degree had to do with adaptation - in terms of what it is and how it's really god damn hard. So this live action intrigues me not just as a one piece fan, but in terms of my studies, and I have no doubt my favourite teacher is getting a kick out of this as we speak lol.
If you don't want spoilers for ep 1, don't read under the cut. If you don't want to feel bummed out cause you super enjoyed the show, also don't read. I am analysing this in a very critical way because I was dead interested in how this was handled.
I have only watched one episode, I can only judge so far at the moment, so feel free to take this all with a grain of salt. There is indeed charm in this series! The only thing is, there's charm when it's trying to be itself exclusively, and it falls really flat when trying to replicate One Piece because...I didn't feel One Piece from this in any sense. Any 'faithful' shots I received felt like a cheap replica attempting to force some nostalgic emotion out of me with nothing earned.
And, from what I can see, that's the problem here. This series isn't sure how loyal it should really be, nor is it sure how much fidelity it should keep - but it's trying to remind me at every damn second "This IS One Piece, do you SEE One Piece?" And it's not just me saying this, the producers themselves admitted that they were TRYING to be loyal. A quote from them is;
“What we learned is the fans are expecting you to be true to the source material,” says executive producer Marty Adelstein, whose Tomorrow Studios produced “Cowboy Bebop” for Netflix before embarking on “One Piece....As we read the comments, it was always, ‘Well, they didn’t do this character the same as this and that.’ … It really taught us a lot of what we needed to do with this one.” “It became everyone’s goal to make sure that when you looked at the show, you thought this was a live-action version of the manga that just felt like another feather in the legacy of Oda,” (source)
So here's my question here, to myself and One Piece fans - did you FEEL like you were watching a 1:1 version of these characters? Did these characters FEEL like themselves instead of being TOLD they're apparently themselves?
Of course, it's an adaptation! It's supposed to be different! But this statement directly contradicts that, and so does everything else. After all they apparently hired Oda to 'check off' on it, they used the Japanese VAs for the Japanese audio version of it, they even have the manga/anime version of Luffy sitting there in the One Piece logo - constantly reminding me OF the original no matter what I do.
So with all these comments, and with all these decisions, what else to expect but "Oh, so they're planning to stay loyal and not deviate from the original? This is clearly their goal."
And that's where the problem ensues for me, because they try DESPERATELY to ham fist in original source material, they really want me to point at the screen and go "JUST LIKE THE MANGA!", but they're not going all in on it and, as such, the changes become increasingly obvious that this ISN'T the same. Because, if you only have a BIT of Zoro's character implemented from the original, but not ALL of it, what else am I to see but a bastardised version of the original here?
This script does this thing where it's giving me beats of Zoro, but not all of Zoro, and suddenly I'm left with a guy who's a weird, bizarro version of Zoro. He's not quite original enough to feel like his own being, and he's not quite loyal enough to feel like the original. And of course, it's not just Zoro, but it's this way for the other characters too.
The 'loyalty' the producers are talking about, and the lesson they've seem to have learnt here is; "We need to unnaturally shove in as much fidelity as we can in an exposition-dump, so we can get it out of the way, make everyone feel like we're respecting the source, and get on to the original scenes that add nothing but a laugh."
And...it's a shame! It's weird to say this series would, so far, be better if they weren't TRYING to replicate One Piece's energy, but from everything I am seeing, it's clearly what they are trying to do. This show has charm when it has its OWN charm, but cutting from a fun little original scene to an exposition dump of lore is so incredibly jarring I don't even really know what to make of it.
For example, we were shown Zoro being tied up to a pole. We are going to point at it and go "I remember that!" but then...the whole reasoning is different, the motives are different, and...the time is all different? In all respect, this series is doing what Disney live actions are doing, where they are giving me MORE scenes with LESS information - and due to seemingly TRYING to be loyal, it feels like the original scenes are fun, but a waste of time due to the exposition dumps being incredibly rushed and lacklustre.
In a complete ironic twist, their desperation to be loyal has them falling flat, so instead I'm seeing a hollow replica of what One Piece is - when it could've been an original live action that's trying to work on its strengths of BEING its own live action.
All in all, the first ep would've been fine if I turned my brain off, but I don't...watch One Piece to do that. I don't ever feel numbed by One Piece, and by all means I was given the expectation that this WOULD be the story RETOLD but with BIGGER action and LARGER characters because they just LOVE Oda and respect him SO MUCH!
But at the end of the day, for a first impression, I got another Netflix live action that COULD work on itself, but ultimately is making me appreciate the original a lot more. It's making me appreciate Oda's writing more, the Strawhat's original characters more, and the world more. It seems great as a digestible family show, which I'm sure is what Netflix wanted, but it's already got me feeling uneasy.
Of course, this could very well change the more I get through, and I'm very open to it, but the first episode in itself makes for a fascinating case study on the fidelity of anime live action adaptations.
And just in case anyone gets up in arms because there seems to be a weird forced positivity crusade on this series right now, Oda himself has said he intends to happily take criticism, because he knows it'll come from a place of love. This by no means is a disrespect to Oda, and is more a look in on how Netflix operates.

Okay one tiny thing that is nagging at me: when did Soundwave get access to a subspace pocket? I know he didn't have one in 2938, or when he snuck his strap on into Roddy's office... Cause I'm sure he would've stuffed it in there if he had! Was it installed during the last medical checks just before they left?
like an hour ago I was just thinking "I must've given SW subspace access for him to carry around the money Mirage gave him" and also the data pad, and then "I didn't specifically state that in the text."
"I wonder if anyone will ask me about that"
annnnd here we are lol
so: truthfully, I didn't write it in anywhere. I probably should've. installing during the medical checks sounds good xD I could lie to you and say "yup!! that's what they did!!" as if I had planned it, but I didn't. so I'll say, "that sounds like a really good and reasonable explanation. if you'd do me the honor of interpreting it that way, I'd like that, because I didn't explain it or spell it out"
I'm pretty sure I even thought reallllllly briefly about it while writing and then just decided to gloss over it, lol. but I should know better, because so many little things are planned out. it makes sense people would want things to be interconnected and clear, and readers and the story do deserve that :)

I have a question about the Life Mission au. Why did Leo think donnie was dead but not Raph or Mikey? Is there a specific reason?
splinter told him he was dead and well... he kinda saw why his dad believed that. you'll see in the next set of pages :)
for raph and mikey, splints just wasn't sure where they went but they weren't present when leo was rescued. donnie was tho. the possibility of all of them being dead was always on splinter's mind. he just denied it because he never got concrete evidence for raph and mikey dying. so he kept looking.
ironically, the activity that he got track of when he was searching came from donnie since he was the one who was in the city the most until he was taken in by big mama when he was 8. after that, all activity stopped and he lost motivation to look for them (and there was another reason but i'll touch on that with side content)

Didn’t see it so my apologies if it’s done, Xander/Angel?
i am afraid of looking in the fic tag because i know that i won't see it done to my satisfaction, as both xander and angel are so often misunderstood in fic, but i think it would fucking slap if taken seriously and if written by someone who Gets both xander and angel. xander has a planet sized crush on angel and i would kill to see angel realize that & subsequently be like "OKAY BUT WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS INFORMATION." and then angel tries to be extra nice to him and MAYBE, AS I AM WRITING THIS RESPONSE, WHAT I AM SAYING BY "SOMEONE WHO GETS BOTH XANDER AND ANGEL" IS ME. I WANT TO WRITE THIS A LITTLE BIT

The Khans - My Introspective
I don't like the Military and I don't support a lot of the actions the NCR does to the Mojave in New Vegas but in terms of the Khans I feel like the fandom infantilizes or diminishes the fact that they are or at least one of the most violent raider groups in the Mojave.
What happened at Bitter Springs was a tragedy, innocent lives were lost and the fact that the NCR swept it under the rug and continued to hunt down Khans that are truly trying to back down and resettle is horrendous, but there is a history to the NCR's aggression towards them.
The Khans first appear in Fallout 1, the main faction of raiders in the game besides the mentioned Vipers (who don't actually appear if I remember correctly). They came from Vault 15 along with the members that would form rival groups; The Vipers, The Jackals, and Shady Sands. They are a very large and foreboding raiding party, known for burning towns and encampments they attack and taking survivors as their slaves or slaves to sell. They are a big reason why the Jackals and Vipers are actually so small in New Vegas, they wiped them out.
Their main targets where Shady Sands and Junker town, the former of the two would be what became The New California Republic. This explains a big part of their animosity towards the Khans, only furthered by the fact the Khans kidnapped Tandi as a young girl, the girl that would go to offically found the NCR out of Shady Sands. When the dweller saved her and killed much of the Khans, this allowed the NCR to develop into what it currently is as they no longer needed to focus on fighting off constant raids.
When the Khans became the New Khans in Fallout 2, they barely resembled the Khans as they were led by Darion, Garl Death-Hand's son (former leader of the Khans). They were smaller and refortified vault 15, still planning to take down the NCR (at this time nowhere near as imperialist as they are in FNV) as mostly a revenge/power ploy. They manipulate The Squat, a group of y'know squatters, that lived in the upper levels, promising and lying about repairing the vault and offering them ransacked caravan resources if they kept the NCR away. Being their only life line The Squat had no choice. Still the chosen one got rid of them and they left New California for the untapped Mojave.
The Great Khans, the most current iteration, continued in the path as the original Khans, regrouping and gaining information from the Followers who hoped they'd use their new medical knowledge to heal themselves. They gained more members and a substantial part of Vegas territory before they were run out by the three families. They were pushed to Bitter Springs where they first and foremost continued to pick off and attack NCR settlements, most of which consisted of caravans, towns, and camps as they saw them as easy like in their old days. It was the killing of four influential Republic members (non-military) that brought on Bitter Springs.
Bitter Springs was the result of years of hatred and animosity and likely the goal to send a final message to the Khans. It does not excuse the fact that innocent men, women, and children were slaughtered with few survivors. It does not excuse the fact that the NCR has yet to make amends for this and continues to try and persecute the Khans even in moments of surrender.
This post is not to defend what happened but to give a quick rundown of the Khan's history and their history with the NCR. It's to remind people that the NCR is not just their military power but an actual group/settlement of people that were also attacked indiscriminately by the Khans. It's to point out that the Khans were not a band of indigenous people (no matter the comparisons) driven from their homes but raiders who fed into the brutal cultures of the west coast wasteland and were in turn treated to the same things.
My frustration comes from the fact that FNV has so many comparisons to indigenous struggles but the groups it chooses are not comparable at all. Their oppression hinges on not being familiar with their past, which explains why they have the reputation they do in canon. The "tribes" are often not even groups of minorities or have goals/desires out of acquisitions of power and I feel like it is important to both acknowledge that this is bad indigenous rep because it is not supposed to be. It is supposed to be a comparison of the in-game groups and how they all do the same things and justify it in their own fucked up ways, some better at it than others.
FNV of all the Fallout games (in light of it being heavily Western based) distastefully uses indigenous imagery and theming for groups that are sad mimicries of American indigenous cultures at best and outright offensive at worst.
#this is also to say the NCR is barely different but they imply New California is a city and safe and that once the NCR military leaves#they will properly try to settle and revitalize the area unlike the goals of almost every other group#the issues arise from the tensions of the hoover dam battles the legion and the corrupt leaders chosen in what is a terse time#but the khans are interesting to me and I like the named khans we have in FNV but they are treated to be almost innocent at points due to#all the Ls they keep taking despite admitting to their raider roots and being PROUD#they partnered with the Legion and before i hear they didnt know they were slavers at a point too and likely didnt care if they believed it#would not affec their own. the Mojave is an unforgivnig place and sometimes you make unforgivable alliances since they alienated all their#other options through their continued and consistent behaviors#like i could go on how bad the native rep is but I would not use any of the tribes cause they barely count the only difference from the NCR#is they organize themself differtently like id use the tribes in Honest Hearts cause holy shit is it bad and racist like at least the Mojav#tribes are just white dickheads brutalizing each other and not the characatures of native people the Sorrows Dead Horse and White legs are#like yikes I hated playing white savior the dlc#this is also semi personal because i dont see a lot of POC people in the fandom talking about the Khans and so I dont know if the proper#perspectives can be added because just because something can represent a culture or group doesn't mean it does or that it was the primary#thing they were trying to get across#like feel free to ask and talk to me more about it cause grrr#fallout#fallout new vegas#the great khans#the khans#new california republic#the ncr#fallout 1#fallout 2#papa khan

Kimi Räikkönen/Sebastian Vettel for the ask game
i love simi. sebastian was dickmatized levels horny for him and now they're neighbours in Switzerland. crazy. something about a guy incapable of shutting up vs a guy who is ICE COLD gruff and is kind of fond of you...... 😈 seriously seb wanted him so bad it made him stupid... when he tugged his finger on podium??? for what??? i think there's also the Michael angle, that Kimi was kind of positioned to be the guy who could take down Ferrari michael and if it hadn't been for one DNF he would've. you want the guy who could've almost slain your hero etc
Tumblr media
that one awards show where Kimi is extremely drunk and is leaning over Seb, practically falling down, and Seb has the stache? Seb took him home and gave him sloppy toppy real and true and happened
i once called them liberal gf with right wing bf and I stand by it

love and LIGHT but charles made the sluttiest man on the grid turn catholic. "you can kiss" and sebastian vettel only smiles? "we can start by holding hands" and seb doesn't even reach out? death would be kinder. the only dynamic EYE see working is a threesome where charles hyperfixates on seb and seb is entertained by it and then he'll be teased by his long term partner about charles's hero worship/crush.

Went into work today with pink hair because I just got it done
One of my favorite children (even tho she’s an absolute menace half the time) proceeded to tell me that it was stupid and she liked my hair better before
Another girl told me that she hates pink (despite the fact she also had pink in her hair?? She then informed me that it’s different because hers was “red” 💀)
Then a few of the older kids complimented it 😂

Continuation of the Kris meeting the Dreemurrs doodles that I did!
Chara was so used to Frisk/Asriel vibes of "I just met you but I love you, and trust you with my life", that they got a bit of whiplash when dealing with Kris.
Dont worry, Kris did end up warming up to Chara! It just took a little while.

I was so surprised when Atlas got brain damage and decided to be a better person. I was prepared to just keep hating him forever. I wasn't prepared to have to be their friend when they actually did what I told them they neededto. But hes good now, and I have to always follow through. So we're friends. I'm still really surprised. Especially with how close he is to Kieran. I know why I'm his friend, but I don't really understand why he's still my friend. I'm grateful for it, but I also feel like there must be some kind of ultimatum coming.
I also kind of miss when we were enemies sometimes. That was a fun project...but that's Wrong and Bad and I feel very bad about that.

Ieieueujdhdjej do you think I could get your opinions on what they did to my guy Monkey D. Garp after you watch the live action?
I honestly have not much to say about Garp at this point (I know you said after) because I only watched the first ep, my opinion so far is I don't know why he's even there. There's a shot that could've been GORGEOUS with Roger centred as he gets executed, but Garp ruins the whole composition and sticks out like a sore thumb. It's super bizarre they seem to have replaced Smoker with Garp so far ??
But surprisingly Garp wasn't the biggest offence like I thought he would be since at this point, he may as well be an original character, the biggest offence was ZORO? He's so far removed from his original character with his being and his scenes that I feel like I'm just seeing a bastardised attempted cool boy version of him? Take note I only watched the first episode so far, but we got SO MUCH time in his really weird introduction scene AND his tied up scene, with NOTHING ADDED? I am really trying to understand the point of these unnecessary changes when they've quite honestly just changed the WHOLE GUY it's SO strange.
The first ep was fun in parts though LMAO
