pls talk about structure. we love structure in this household. what's your favourite? - bma (also hi dunno if u remember me)
BESTIE OF COURSE I REMEMBER YOU <3 sorry it took me so long to answer you, i had a lllllong day yesterday. this is such a long rambling ask i don't even know if it's what you wanted to know and you are not at ALL obligated to read the whole thing lol but here we go!!!
i actually remembered you asked me a semi-related question one time before which is here and at the time i was thinking of structure as in, like, Acts. acts of the story. and my answer was that i basically don't think about it too hard it usually organizes itself in the outline process. which is still semi true but what i referred to in THIS post (the one that prompted ur ask) which i am so excited about is the Layout Of The Scenes re: whose pov they are from and in what time period they are taking place, especially when you depart from sticking to the close third with one character for the entire fic. which is like BUBBLE BATH LAUGHING WOMAN.mp4!!!!!!!! i don't know if that's the kind of structure you get excited about but i am excited about it
what i mean by that is like. ok so like in anchor my structure was "alternating viewpoints," right, between the two guys i am writing the fic about. EVERY time the scene swapped i swapped povs between character a and character b. i was very very strict about this and even casually kept an eye on my scene length to try and give them the same amount of pov time. (who says you can't have two protagonists!!!) that worked out to both my benefit and detriment near the end of the story when i needed two big things to happen in a row where both scenes needed to be from character b's pov. i struggled with a long time on what to do about it and then figured out a way to slip a breather between them from character a's pov, and then it wound up that the story was actually better that way - not only did we need to calm down from the last thing before we built suspense for the next thing, but it allowed for some character a perspective for the previous scene, in which he was unable to really speak or act to tell us how he felt/what he thought because he was drugged. the structure in anchor was also fun because i got to plan out versions of a specific story that character b, an unreliable narrator, told (both to us and to himself), and in each chapter i had the goal of making the story just a little bit closer to the true version. i have a really good time doing gradual escalation like that (more on that in a minute).
so i really liked that alternating a/b/a/b/a/b etc structure, but it is hard to pull off! i don't know if i could have done it if the fic didn't have those guys be so incredibly isolated for most of the runtime. another structure i did that i really liked was for enter night, which was nonlinear but (for the most part) contained. this DOES involve acts - there were 3 "sections" to this fic. there was 1. everything that happened before sam and dean left bobby's house to protect the seals 2. the actual seal-protecting and then 3. the finale where meg enacted her grand plan. so while the chapters individually had everything happen out of order, we for the most part did not tend to put anything from one "act" in the section of another, except in places where you might put a dramatic flashback or flashforward anyways. (the prologue actually took place near the end of the fic, and near the end there is a flashback to something that happened at the beginning.)
and speaking on gradual escalation i also really enjoyed doing that in how arthur got his groove back. initially i really wanted to do an a/b structure for this one as well but it wasn't working because i didn't WANT to place equal importance on both characters (you will notice there is only One Guy with his name in the goddamn title and it is the one i am unfairly obsessed with). so i threw that out and instead adopted a system where with each chapter, the events of the plot would force arthur peel back one layer of anti-magic bias until he got to the heart of the problem (daddy issues with a side of existential crisis). i got to do other fun stuff in the spaces between that, but each chapter had a very precise goal, and i think the final product wound up being much tidier as a result (than, say, a fic like broken road, which i am proud of but which also had a much looser structure - the only thing that really gradually escalated there was how alarming dean's possession was becoming and it wasn't the Point of the story).
finally the structure i am working on RIGHT NOW for the undisclosed thing is something i am having fun with. instead of one structure for the entire story (it's too big!) i am having fun with a lot of little mini-structures. the story sort of has two halves, and three main pov characters. character a is actually the protagonist in this fandom, but i really also like character b and wanted her to have more screentime even though in this fandom she's usually someone who doesn't show up much, so i did the first chapter, the ENTIRE thing, from her pov. she and character a start the story in separate places, so i completely cut out her pov until they met one another, did an a/b structure for the first chapter they spent together, and then when they went their separate ways i have a character b scene at the start and end of every chapter, until the first half of the story ends.
meanwhile character c gets only TWO pov scenes in the first half of the story (one during her introduction, another during an event in which neither of the other two pov characters can logically be present) because in the first half of the story she is carrying a very big secret, and it's 1. hard to write around that from her own pov and 2. more immersive not to be able to get to know her in this time, since she is playing it all close to her chest. but later, in the second half of the story, after the secret's out, character a is...taken out of commission for awhile, and she gets ALL the pov scenes he might have had during that time, had he not been uh. unavailable. there is ALSO something of a verrry minor teeny tiny timeskip between the two halves, so in the second half of the story i am opening up the povs to include lots of the side characters, and at the start and/or end of every chapter i am using those scenes in a non-linear fashion to 1. explain what happened during the timeskip 2. solve a mystery about where an ancient-yet-advanced people disappeared to (are they dead, did they leave, not just what happened during the timeskip but what happened before the story even began).
to actually answer your question instead of rambling, i think i prefer that a/b structure and/or something nonlinear (never shall the twain meet, most likely, although i did get tempted to try for 12:46pm which is a deancas thing i will write eventually - part of why that's taking so long is that this kind of structuring is something i am struggling with). sorry for rambling so much! i hope at least some of it was a little interesting to you <3

I agree about your post about the OA
The first time I saw it at like 16 it boggled my fucking mind bro. I didn’t understand it at all but I LOVED it so much. Rewatching it now for the first time since the second season came out I appreciate the story so much more, and do understand it and it’s nuance. I genuinely believe it’s one of the best shows of the decade, if only for its unique and ingenious plotline. Also the s1 finale makes me SOB every time
So tragic such a masterpiece got cancelled. We could’ve used with a meaningful, beautiful show instead of the other shit Netflix pumps out

what scifi media do you like?
OH ANON I HAVE SO MANY. i'm so glad you asked 💕💕💕 (tagging @gorydean too so she sees 💕💕💕)
gotta start first and foremost with the sparrow series by mary doria russell as my blog is basically just a shrine to it at this point. amazing book and definitely recommend it if you love found family, first contact, trauma, tragedy, and the abandonment of the faithful by g-d. huge massive trigger warning tho. everyone says the second book isn't as good as the first, but i completely disagree. i think they're bitg equally as good as each other; the second book just takes awhile to get to the most insanity inducing parts whereas the first one starts out strong with that and keeps going until the end of the story.
i would have more books to recommend, but i've only just started REALLY getting back into reading after several years of not reading as much due to a variety of reasons (mostly trauma and chronic and mental illness). that being said, i have an insane amount of films to give you to watch instead of books.
gotta recommend my all time fav film (or one of the two anyway), the fountain. most people...don't like this movie because they think it's hard to understand and doesn't make sense towards the end (i had to watch it several times to get it), but please please please watch it. it's a beautiful film both visually and plotwise as long as you give it a chance 💕
sound of my voice is softer in terms of scifi, but still definitely scifi. it's another film that lets you decide what to believe. it's also another film people tend not to like for whatever reason, but i think it's extremely well done and the ending is so 💕💕💕💕💕💕
cloud atlas. very much a story in the same vein as the fountain taking place over different timelines. another beautifully done story about how everything and everyone is connected throughout space and time. ofc my fav timelines are the ones with robert frobisher and sonmi-451. i do also recommend the book, but i liked the film better because of a few of the changes they made.
sunshine is one of my fav films ever and i've loved it since i was in high school and first saw it. it reminds me a lot of three body problem in the sense that antagonist (idk if i would exactly call him a villain even tbh) is using g-d as a reason for the things he's doing. there's a few deleted scenes i wish they'd kept in because it really emphasizes this, but even so, this film is gorgeous in so many ways.
i origins. if u can't tell already i'm a huge brit marling fan and i think this is one of her best stories. again: you get to choose what to believe and you really have to watch the whole film for the pay off, but it is so very much worth it. i think i've actually only ever watched this film once, tho idk why bc it's genuinely one of my favs.
looper is another film that idk why more people weren't into it. the setting is dystopian. i was trying to think of a way to explain it in a few short sentences like i have the rest of the films here, but it's one of those films also that i think going into it knowing nothing is better. the kid who plays the rainmaker is so fucking good too. he's not even 10, but he played that role perfectly.
elysium. EVERYONE KNOWS DISTRICT 9 BUT NO ONE KNOWS ELYSIUM. i stand by my opinion that this film would be infinitely better if diego luna were the main character instead of matt damon, but even so i really love this film. the score is gorgeous. also lmao we for real might be living in this universe soon if elon fixes up that space hotel he wants to do fucking rip
ender's game. the author is a homophobic and transphobic dickwad who actively gives his money to anti-lgbt organizations, so watch this for free if you can (and buy the books second hand), but i actually really enjoyed what they did with this film. a lot of people thought it was too rushed, but also like....ender's game is a very Dense book, so i understand why they did it the way they did it. also the score is amazing.
signs. another film involving g-d and religion seen through the lens of scifi and first contact. this film gets shit on a ton for reasons i do not know, but it's actually really well done. it scared the ever living shit out of me the first few times i saw it tho bc i did Not grow up watching horror.
knowing. another film involving g-d and religion seen through the lens of scifi and first contact (can you tell i have a type of film/media i like???). this film also scared the ever living shit out of me when i first saw it to the point i had to sleep with the lights on, but in all actuality it isn't scary at all (i was just 14 and had never seen a thriller before lol). i really love disaster films tbh, but this is one of my all time favs (next to greenland).
another earth i did not like when i first saw it. i thought the whole thing was kind of pointless and didn't make very much sense, but the more i've thought about it since then, the more i've understood it. funnily enough, i never watched it a second time, but it's brit marling, so i probably will eventually. again: definitely recommend.
lucy. listen i know this has scarlett johansson in it and none of us like her, but this film is good despite her. i thought it was going to be dumb as hell when i first saw it, but i actually ended up liking it so much that it's heavily inspired the next novel i'm planning on writing (a scifi space opera about a girl becoming g-d).
origami. okay this one is difficult to find and you WILL have to buy it if you want to watch it (trust me: i have searched FAR and wide for this film in any other place and vimeo is the ONLY place i found it; it's only $5 to rent on there tho), but it's so worth it. it's worth it. it's one of my fav films and i watched it purely because of francois arnaud and i'm glad i did. this literally is his best work imo.
ink is my all time hands down favorite film. idk if you would even call it scifi, but i love it so much i just wanted to talk about it. it very obviously had zero budget, but they used what little money they had VERY wisely and the result was this beautiful film. the story makes me sob every single time. actually it's quite similar to origami, so if you like one, you'll probably like the other.
tron: legacy is another film that people shit on and idk why. it has The Best religious imagery. like how are you going to top one of the programs falling to their knees in prayer as flynn passes by????? the whole thing seems to be a jesus/judas metaphor anyway and i'm crazy for that shit. gotta mention the score as always because daft punk knocked it out of the park (people shit on the score too and i really don't get why).
thelma. i watched this one a whim with a friend and i cannot recommend it enough. i feel like it was kind of popular on here when it first came out bc it's a sapphic film, but it's also just very good in general. i've seen people get super upset about it also bc their interpretation makes it lesbophobic (which is crazy to me but whatever.
melancholia. i did Not like this movie for the longest time, but then i watched it recently and finally Got it. i guess you really do have to be a certain level of depressed to understand this film, so if you're insanely suicidal and can barely function like me, then i recommend it. you will probably get some catharsis out of it like i did. it is a very Strange film tho.
the creator came out at the end of last year and it was so good. definitely my fav film to come out in the last few years and involves g-d, religion, and AI. the score also in this is great (everybody say thank you hans zimmer. again.). the ending makes me sob so much.
more that i love a lot, but not as much (apparently there's a character limit, so i can't explain why these are my favs too, but it's for similar reasons as above).
the matrix trilogy
the fifth element
snowpiercer
blade runner 2049
as for tv shows, i don't have as many, but i do have a few that i would highly recommend if you like any of the films above:
halo. again: everyone shits on this show, but the absolute TRAGEDY of it is the fanboys hate it bc they suck and are bigots and everyone else who would like it (LIKE MY MUTUALS) refuses to give it a chance because of its overall reputation, so i'm BEGGING YOU GUYS TO GIVE IT A CHANCE.
foundation. genuinely fucking good. so much of what the creators of this show have done to change the story has been for the better. i read the books and they were okay, but the show is so so good. idk when season 3 will be coming out, but hopefully soon (same for halo, which i actually like better than this show).
the oa. i will forever mourn what we could've had with this show. i can't even talk about it without getting choked up. this getting canceled really truly fucked me up.
castle rock season 1. technically a horror series, but this season is more scifi than horror, i think. everything really comes to a head in episode 9 iirc and that episode still makes me crazy when i think about it. i definitely need to do a rewatch.
firefly/serenity. you've probably heard this one recommended before, but there's a reason for that. it's really so good, but g-d and jesus hate me because it too was canceled before it could even finish ONE SEASON. thankfully there's a film that kind of ties everything together, but WE COULD'VE HAD SO MUCH MORE.
i tried to put in some movies that aren't talked about as much on here!! i also have several letterboxd lists dedicated purely to scifi, which you can find below.
holy holy holy (scifi (and other films) involving religious imagery or straight up just about theology
the sparrow cinematic universe (films that are either discussed in the sparrow or remind me of it or that i could see the main characters watching)
but it was my body. it was my blood. and it was my love. (films that i either genuinely believe could be based off of the sparrow or just remind me of it in some way)
per aspera ad astra (scifi films i have seen or heard of. this literally is every single scifi film i remember ever in existence so it's quite long)
also mainstream scifi that i recommend/am obsessed with
interstellar
dune series (wer'e talking about the books here; not whatever the fuck denis villenueve pulled with the films lmao)
district 9
annihilation/southern reach trilogy
ex machina
prometheus
pacific rim
arrival
event horizon
mad max: fury road
nope
mobile suit gundam series (mostly hathaway and g-witch tho)
star wars (mostly the prequel and sequel trilogies)
nausicaa of the valley of the wind
castle in the sky
inception
tenet
high life
aldnoah zero
hanna
real steel
86: eighty-six
this is so much longer than i meant it to be omg. anyway people do not call me the scifi queen for no reason.

For the writer/actor anon, can I recommend Brit Marling? Magnetic actress, terrific writer with her longtime collaborator, literally created her own career writing her own roles, fascinating to listen to.

Brit Marling new show????!!!! Why have I not heard of it before?! She should be much bigger imho. But thank you for my new show to watch!!
You are welcome, anon, I think I only heard about it because I’m still carrying a torch for The OA and it’s been floating around in those tags for a while, but I’ve only just now started to see ads outside of Hulu. I’ve only watched the first episode so far, but I really enjoyed it. Cool blend of true crime vibes, a locked room mystery, near-future sci-fi, and Brit Marling being beautiful and mysterious 👍

i think something is wrong with me; after watching another earth and the oa, i wanted to watch sound of my voice, but i just finished it, and all i could think about was: i dont think brit marling believes in therapy. and now i (who has been in and out of therapy for a few years because of my anxiety and possible ocd) am just feeing dumb and stupid and anxious for doing it. i think i made a mistake
hi!
first of all, you're basing that assumption about brit from the art she has made. not only do we not know whether that is actually something she believes. but everything she's ever made has been a collaboration with zaal as well as the dozens of others that are involved in these productions. the art isn't just representitive of britt, but of everyone involved including the actors, producers and editors. art is rarely representitive of one person, even if it appears that way. so, you don't know how she actually feels about therapy.
secondly, even if you feel that britt advocates for not taking therapy in her work, that doesn't mean she's right. britt marling is just an artist she's not a medical professional. all she can advocate for, if she advocates anything, is her personal opinion based on her specific experiences - all of which are only applicable to her. therapy may not have been helpful for her and that may come through in her work, but that is only HER experience. one person in 7 billion.
thirdly, yes, therapy isn't for everyone, but it is for some. for every person therapy has helped, there's an equal amount it hasn't. the reasons it works and doesn't work are different for everyone. i am a huge advocate for therapy and would never encourage anyone to abandon it unless it genuinely wasn't working for you. if you feel therapy isn't for you, i strongly advise you to discuss that feeling with a professional because they're the ones with the capacity to give you alternatives to therapy, or adjust your current treatment plan.
finally, britt marling and her funky little stories about people who don't trust therapy is not the equivolent of either a professional opinion, or an informed opinion about you or your mental health. its a story. i'm sorry its made you feel dumb and stupid about your personal choices. it's okay if the story has made you reflect on whether or not therapy has helped you, but please do not feel bad about seeking help when you needed it. do not feel bad because an artist who updates instagram once every 3 years has made u feel that way. you made the decisions the best you could at the time, nothing more or less.
also, i am not sure if you're the same anon whose been messaging about the oa. but please stop watching britt's work if its making you feel this unstable, unsure and generally bad about yourself. i mean it. stop watching it. there's a difference between art that challenges you and art that triggers you. if its the latter, step away from it.
wishing you all the best ❤️

What’s your opinion of Hap x Prairie?
Good day, dear anon!I’m genuinely in love with this ship. It’s ambiguous, complicated and kinda messy and that’s why it is so interesting to watch Hap and Prairie dynamics on screen. Honestly saying I don’t see Hap as a total evil-evil and I believe Prairie had perfectly kicked his ass already and will again in the future. Also Jason Isaacs and Brit Marling made so awesome work together, their chemistry is insane. I know that the most of fandom is very “negative” towards Hap and the whole HOAP ship and I really get where all this hatred is coming from. But for me it’s just interesting fictional relationship of two interesting, unusual fictional characters and I’m so curious in a good way where will their plot go.

do you know anything about season 2??
hey anon !! afaik we don’t have much info yet, but here’s what i know:
i think it’ll probably be released early 2018
NDEs and the movements will still be important
at least one openly bi/lesbian character
brit & zal had basically the entire thing planned out so there shouldn’t be any continuity errors or plot holes (hopefully)
Braille will be important
here is a video u may find interesting
[first link is to screenshots of a twitter conversation in which zal batmanglij confirms bi/lesbian character] [second link is to a video of brit marling talking about the story of The OA and theories about it]
if anyone knows more, please add on !!

Hey Marta ! Good luck :)
Thank you for your words Anon! And dont’ worry for the spanish, it’s ok, and I’m so grateful that you try it to write in spanish :D !! Thank you so much!!And well, I do’t know, today is a weird day... But i will try to be better! And yes, Brit is so pretty and looks like a lot to the Fool Thank you for your words!! Have a nice day ! *hugs* !!!! :)

hey there ! i'm looking for a face claim for an oc and the one i picked out has like, no resources, so i was wondering if you could help me find an alternate. she's in her late twenties, early thirties, blonde, supposed to have a naive / wary look to her. she's an artificial creation. i originally had brit marling so anyone like her would be perfect ! i'd really appreciate it, thanks !
Kirsten Dunst (34)
Laura Vandervoort (32)
Brittany Snow (31)
