Review: Delicates (#2) by Brenna Thummler
Storygraph | Bookshop.org Marjorie Glatt’s life hasn’t been the same ever since she discovered a group of ghosts hiding in her family’s laundromat. Wendell, who died young and now must wander Earth as a ghost with nothing more than a sheet for a body, soon became one of Marjorie’s only friends. But when Marjorie finally gets accepted by the popular kids at school, she begins to worry that if…

148. Sheets, by Brenna Thummler
Tumblr media
Owned: No, library Page count: 239 My summary: Marjorie is thirteen years old and cracking under the pressure. Not only does she have to face school, she also basically runs her family laundrette alone. Money is a struggle, customers are complaining, so the last thing she needs is a ghost in the building messing everything up. But that's ridiculous. Ghosts aren't real. They can't be real. Right? My rating: 3.5/5 My commentary:
Can you tell work has had a job lot of graphic novels in recently? This is yet another one I saw on the shelves that looked cute, so I thought I'd check it out. The story of a girl running a laundrette haunted by the ghost of a kid running from the Land of Ghosts...and it is cute, in a lot of ways. But it's not a particularly in-depth story, I'm afraid. I feel like there was a lot of wasted potential here, but it is a good read nonetheless. Just don't go into it expecting a lot.
My main problem with this book is that everything just felt really underdeveloped. We're just supposed to accept that this teenager basically runs a laundrette alone, everyone in town knows, and nobody steps in or decides that's a lot for a young girl to be managing. (Her dad is around, but he's depressed over her mum's death, so he doesn't really do much.) There's a predatory guy who wants to buy the building for his own business, but he's a cookie-cutter capitalist villain without much else going on. Marjorie and Wendell, the ghost, mostly share an antagonistic relationship, but by the end they're declaring each other to be true friends without that ever feeling like it was fully earned. It's not bad, all the plot beats are there, I just wanted a lot more meat on these bones. We have the rest of the series, but I don't think I'll be reading them.
Next, some autobiography from someone who will always be there for you...

Rigth in the feelings

"Delicates" (2021) by Brenna Thummler is definitely one of the most touching thimg I've read this year. If you're kind of an outsider with a bad experience with school you will probably relate to it in a painful way. But hey, maybe it will help you to cope.

Adventures in Librarian-ing
One of the best parts of being an elementary/jr high school librarian:
Sometimes you're having a bad day and out of nowhere one of the kids is like "I made you something! :D"

The artwork is based on the graphic novel Sheets by Brenna Thummler.
According to the artist, "every ghost is holding or wearing something".

Graphic novel: "Delicates" by Brenna Thummler
Tumblr media
Marjorie Glatt knows there is life after death. Her best friend, Wendell, is a ghost, after all. And a very traditional ghost, manifesting within a bedsheet. Knowing that ghosts exist make it a bit awkward for Marjorie to interact with Eliza Duncan, who is determined to photograph a ghost, to the point of being ostracized at school for her hyper-fixation.
Eliza and Wendell could help Eliza. They could simply be friends. They could confirm her beliefs. But they might need to do something even more heroic, in order to save the depressed girl. Because while Marjorie knows there is life after death, Wendell knows that it's not worth the passing over.
In the first sheet-ghost graphic novel, aptly titled "Sheets," Thummler gave us a story with a mix of heavy topics (loss of a parent, another parent's depression, poverty), but also a lot of whimsy (ghosts are literally sheets, and they have their own special detergent). That having been established, this book goes a bit harder into social and psychological subjects. It's meant for a slightly more mature audience. Like, a year or two more mature. I imagine, for kids who read "Sheets" and were excited for its sequel, the timing was just right, on their growing-up. But, if you're a kid's adult, it's best to be aware of the themes and make sure your own child is in a good headspace for them.
That said, I enjoyed this one, as much as the high school social situations FRUSTRATED me SO MUCH. I'm sure they'll resonate with the target age group, but man, I forgot how harsh things were! Woof!

Sheets
Brenna Thummler
Date Finished: September 9, 2023
4/5
Sheets follows two characters, Marjorie, a young girl taking care of her family’s laundry mat after her parents death, and the ghost of a young boy, Wendell, who doesn’t feel like he quite fits in in the afterlife. After entering the land of the living once more Wendell accidentally causes problems for Marjorie who is trying to keep the business afloat, while a local business man attempts to replace the business with a spa.
The thing that drew me to this graphic novel was the art. Sheets’ art shows a gorgeous colorful and soft world which really encapsulates the feel of the story. The art of the novel is not where it’s beauty stops, story itself is full of heart. It is paced beautiful, excluding the ending which felt slightly rushed, the characters felt very real and I enjoyed getting to watch Marjorie’s growth throughout the story.
I think this graphic novel is a great choice for young, emerging readers who are looking for something a little bit more challenging and thought provoking.

“Developing film is a delicate process. […] You can’t make any mistakes. The teensiest mistake will ruin the whole process. All your photos: gone forever.
Humans are delicate, too. The teensiest mistake can ruin them, even if you do everything else right.
Just because mistakes seem small and insignificant, doesn’t mean they are.”
