SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT!! Here we are, with another eclectic book selection for you all to add to your reading list. If you are a lover of language and scintillating prose, this is a book you will love. My 💭; This is a novel of beautiful language. The prose is other-worldly and I think the plot is rather loose, but when the writing is this beautiful, the looseness of plot is but a minor annoyance. Alissa is a troubled lady who finds her settled in 1920’s South Africa with her Englishman husband. When the Immorality Act is passed which basically outlaws relations between Whites and Natives, Alissa, husband and their two daughters realize that a change in place is a necessity. This prompts Alissa to initiate a horrid act, and leaves the reader with a big ? Later when some of her journals are found, we are let in on her state of mind, but nothing detailing the whys. The construction of great paragraphs and greater sentences aids the reader in overlooking the thinness of explanation. And just as you might begin to tire of such, the novel concludes, and you will sit mesmerized by the language you just experienced and sometime later may add a little disappointing note about plot. “Gray boy 23” becomes the Tired-But-Not-Retired-Desperate-Housewife’s secret guilty-pleasure-fantasy to consciously dream about while she simulates enjoyment with her close to death husband of 20+ years as she repeatedly checks her older smartphone for SocMed updates. In another part of town Bigtime Bookpusher McGee from the stalk-in plays over the episode like a serial-killer-fantasy. She has nothing to lose. At least, what she has to lose isn’t equivalent to 23’s age-appropriate equivalent female potential (we assume he’s straight), so she repeatedly indulged herself with the fantasy of doing it again like a ritual; adding in more “pony tricks to the show”. She’s the equivalent of an incel postalworker who hasn’t had a date since his 20’s. At this point getting fired Will do little to nothing for her future prospects; not even if she goes to jail. Or... At least she expects nothing Can happen to her, while she shares the story as a juice joke with her colleagues. Babyboy-bloomers, she jokes, is the cutest mouse in the ratmaze, and that becomes his library-granny nickname. Babyboom-bloomers. The joke carries on, and it becomes a favourite passtime of a hobbyist meme-group-fanclub of incel women to find FanWare-paparazzi-shots of their new pet. “Baby-Bigalow” is bow code for a secret commercial dating service for “entrepreneurial” collegeboys with an only-fans account. So I wanted to highlight some of my favorite books of 2017! I definitely won’t be able to showcase them all, but never fear my best of and worst of 2017 will be up on my YouTube channel next week! - First up, Eliza and her Monsters by Francesca Zappia! Now if you know me, you know that not often do I pick up a contemporary and thoroughly enjoy it. Not only that, even when I do enjoy a contemporary it doesn’t often make it into my top 10, but this little gem focused on mental health, loss, grief, and love so perfectly that I still think about it today. Certain descriptions Eliza used to explain how she felt in an anxious situation, or how Wallace expresses his grief... gah, it’s still emotional and I related more than I care to admit sometimes. Also, something I appreciated was Zappia’s clear knowledge and understanding of fandoms and the internet generally. It was refreshing. SUNDAY SPOTLIGHT!! Just returned yesterday from Cancun (a much needed vacation) and had a good week of reading. As I catch up on my reviews they will all be here in THE SPOTLIGHT! But today the light is on Someday, Maybe. In keeping with my core principle of honesty, I must say, this was a tough read for me. Emotionally. Mentally. Spiritually. Was difficult to find any joy, well the writing contained some beautiful sentences and paragraphs but the content, whoa. I wrote ✍🏾 Overwhelming. To say this is a grief filled novel is the ultimate understatement. The ability of this author to immerse the reader in grief over 350 pages is astonishing. I mean, whew. It just never stopped. It was unrelenting, to the point that you feel like you are experiencing grief along with the character. As a trigger warning, anyone who has dealt with the suicide of a loved one may want to steer clear. The four stars are for the beautiful paragraphs that offer temporary respite from the trauma that inherits page after page after page. At some point, I was begging for the end, the only relief coming when I knew I was near the finish line.
