Author Ask Tag Game

Thank you to @janec23 for tagging me to do this one. Never done it before, but I've seen others do it, and I'm excited to try it myself!

I think I'll do this for my main WIP (as per usual lol) - Steph's Crew.

Here are the questions:

What is the main lesson of your story (e.g. kindness, diversity, anti-war), and why did you choose it?

What did you use as inspiration for your worldbuilding (like real-life cultures, animals, famous media, websites, etc.)?

What is your MC trying to achieve, and what are you, the writer, trying to achieve with them? Do you want to inspire others, teach forgiveness, and help readers grow as a person?

Let's do this thing!

What is the main lesson of your story (e.g. kindness, diversity, anti-war), and why did you choose it?

I don't know if there's a single main lesson to my story. The characters go through a ton of things, and they learn a lot of different lessons throughout. I will say that they all kind of fall under the same theme/idea... A lot of them learn family and relationship lessons, especially to do with communication and being open to listening to the other person. These lessons also apply to the romantic relationships and the friendship dynamics as well in the story... as well as coming-of-age, high school messages of being true to yourself, peer pressure, sticking up for yourself, standing up for what's right, teamwork, friendship, and blah blah blah etc. You get the gist.

What did you use as inspiration for your worldbuilding (like real-life cultures, animals, famous media, websites, etc.)?

Tons of stuff... it's a YA/teen drama, and a lot of it takes place in high school. And I've watched a lot of stuff similar to this... I also started writing this while I was in my final year of sixth form, similar to my characters. I also decided to have it set in North London (and I included a real place - Hampstead Heath. It's a large park, and it's where the characters occasionally meet up). I made up a few places that are inspired by real places, too... or things that I've seen on TV. Like Stevie's and Dave's. Stevie's is a small restaurant/cafe place where Bret sometimes works after school, and it's right next to Dave's - a record store where he also spends a ton of time at (usually with Elise). These two places came from this show that I used to watch all the time growing up - The Next Step. It's about a team of dancers that compete in competitions. But when they aren't dancing, they usually hang out at the cafe/juice bar venue downstairs, which changes every season. Each season's cafe has a completely different vibe... I think Dave's fits the Culture Shock vibe (season 2), since there's a lot more going on, and you could buy records and other cool stuff there as well as snacks and drinks, while Stevie's is more of a Hidalgo's type of place (season 3). And I'm not necessarily inspired by this show (since I only just found it recently) but I thought I'd mention this because I find it cool. I like looking for stuff that fits the vibe of my story, whether that's music, aesthetic mood boards, TV shows, movies, etc. One show that I've found is an old BBC show called "Waterloo Road." It's crazy... it's all about a struggling school in the UK that's full of rebel kids. It focuses a lot of the teachers and staff as well, which is an interesting direction to go. Aside from that, though, it feels similar to the story I'm trying to write myself... well, maybe not as crazy as that (people are dying and getting arrested constantly on that show), but still. Could explain why I've gotten so invested in the show already!

What is your MC trying to achieve, and what are you, the writer, trying to achieve with them? Do you want to inspire others, teach forgiveness, and help readers grow as a person?

This is an interesting question... mostly because I don't know if I consciously thought of this while writing my main characters. My main character tends to go with the flow, you know? And so does the rest of her group, to an extent. That being said, they all clearly want something out of life, and they strive towards whatever that is (they're all really different and want different things). They are all students in their final year of high school, so one main goal is to get through the year and achieve the qualifications they need and prepare themselves for the next stage of life (whether that's university, getting a job/apprenticeship or whatever else). But they also want to be happy and have their lives figured out. At the stage of life that they are in, I feel like it's a common goal to kind of find yourself, you know? Learn who you are. In the first instalment of the series, that is the common goal for all the characters in the main crew. But there's also an underlying goal for Steph in particular... her storyline revolves around her former foster family conflict, particularly where it involves her late foster sister Melanie, and her tragic (and somewhat mysterious) death. I don't want to say what the goal is, because it's a huge spoiler. But it's a big deal, and it's an ongoing storyline throughout the series.

How many chapters is your story going to have?

I have no idea. I planned for it to have 20 chapters... it exceeded that limit ages ago. It'll take as long as it'll take.

Is it fanfiction or original content? Where do you plan to post it?

It is original! I don't know how I'm going to put it out, though. I've already posted some of it here (the series of dialogue that I've been doing. Almost done with that btw). I was planning to post some chapters/extracts of it here as well, just to get some feedback from my fellow writers/friends. But I was debating putting the full story either on Wattpad or self-publishing it. 'Cause I feel like I never use my Wattpad account... but I also want to make a real book out of this. I don't know what I'll do just yet.

When and why did you start writing?

I've been writing and making up stories forever, pretty much. I just like getting lost in a made-up world (which is probably why I love to read, too). If we're talking about this story, though - just over a year. I started when I was in a similar stage of life as the characters I was writing (sixth form, last years of secondary school education, sitting mock exams and feeling a ton of pressure), and it was a great way to relax and just de-stress and unwind.

Do you have any words of engagement for fellow writers of writeblr? What other writers on Tumblr do you follow?

Ooh, I follow a ton of great people... I was actually planning to post a proper list of recommendations. But here are some of my fave writers/mutuals on Tumblr (check these folks out if you haven't already!): @exquisitecrow - one of my first-ever followers! A really talented and underrated writer @thelavenderwriter - full of fun posts and prompts @gummybugg - one of my fave mutuals! Great writer, and a really cool person @jessicawestonauthor - another underrated person @clairelsonao3 - soooo good. Recently started getting into this person's work on ao3! @winterandwords - yet another cool person! Writes a lot of great stuff @jojomills - a really skilled poet @toribookworm22 - another really cool person... they always ask a lot of cool questions for writerblr asks, too @soph1333 - just a fun person. Posts prompts and stuff like that @mysticstarlightduck - ok everyone on this list is just a really cool person lol. This person is no exception. They write a lot of great stuff as well!

Now that you fully explain your reasoning. It comes off as you having an issue with Chrollo being with a woman, and you don’t like that personally.

Here I was thinking you probably didn’t like how he was portrayed as a Yandere, or that you wanted him to act differently in personality. As your post came off as such, and I was interested in seeing your perspective, but I understand now that you are hinting at the issue being Chrollo x f!reader.

Look, you can express your opinions, but it’s coming off as misogynistic. Majority of us who create Chrollo content, especially x reader, are women. We are going to make content that align with us. I can’t speak for all, but it’s obvious from the issue you’re bringing up.

The reason there are little to no m!reader, or gn!reader is because no one is making them for Chrollo. If you look for other characters, they have tons. Like in any fandom, it’s the fans who create the content. You can’t raise an issue about Chrollo fans who are women that create female!reader, or similar content that has Chrollo being paired up with a woman.

You may personally not see Chrollo with a woman, but that’s where I disagree with you. Not all of us will have the same opinion on this.

I continue to see female reader, or woman focused content bashed in these spaces too. Yet, all we do is make sure to tag our content correctly, that way it doesn’t trick anyone. But that too isn’t enough, because now there isn’t enough of m! or gn!, then it’s a problem?

We can’t do nothing about that, it’s up to those who have an issue with it to create content too. Time and time again I see this occurring, you can’t get mad at majority of the fans creating, and liking content that doesn’t align with your tastes, or outlook. This happens to many people, but instead of complaining, they are creating content.

I myself am not white, nor do I have white skin. Yet, content is constantly portrayed with those that are those things. I don’t complain about not seeing content geared towards me. What I do is I create content that I can relate too, since I know those who are white or such won’t do it, have no interest, or they don’t understand anything that they can’t relate too. Even with x reader, some writers still write with a white reader in mind. It’s obvious, but I just avoid those writers, as they aren’t for me. Then I create content for women like me, that way they too can enjoy things. Not all of us women always are represented.

Don’t put down female centered content to lift your own views. There’s too much negativity that women get in fandom spaces, I’m especially talking about those of us that create m x f content. If it’s not for you, let it slide.

At the end of the day, don’t worry. You will definitely have support from those who feel the same way as you. Just make the content you want, and you will see people do the same because they were inspired by you. Then you’ll slowly have the content you’ve been wanting, it just takes time, and your own participation for it to work.

I read the first 3 paragraphs and I’m being honest, I’m NOT reading the rest. Mostly because I don’t need too. It’s clear you misinterpreted what I stated in my previous post, so let me make this clear:

I don’t like yandere Chrollo at all. Not with any gender. I don’t like how he’s portrayed, or really his personality in most of this fics (though I really can’t speak for all as I rarely even read those fics at this point). I personally don’t really agree with the idea that Chrollo would hold someone captive, force them to love him, “punish” them for not reciprocating his feelings, blah blah blah. All that good stuff. I also don’t really see him as this super dominant guy but that’s neither here nor there.

I have no hate for m/f pairings whether they include Chrollo or not. I still like and engage with Chrollo fics even if they are with a female insert as long as I like their portrayal of Chrollo enough. Saying that 90% of Chrollo fics have female inserts isn’t misogynistic, it’s a fact. And by stating that fact, it’s NOT putting down female inserts and if you actually see it that way, I genuinely don’t know what to tell you because that’s on your interpretation. All I was trying to get across is that I’M NOT A WOMAN AND WOULD LIKE MORE DIVERSITY ✨

Lastly, as per my last post I literally said that it’s NOT like I don’t think Chrollo would be interested in women. I’ll reiterate here that I don’t think he really cares about gender when looking for a s/o. It doesn’t matter though because now I’m definitely posting my stuff here.

Very agree with that anon has said, but there's still something left we have to discuss and as community should rn.

We all have our preferences in tickling, if we want it to be kinky or not and blah, since i've seen all the problems this community had with the harrasment there is one thing that I want to highlight from all that. All this started because they always believed that the sfw spectrum includes things that for some may be suggestive (such as torture, traps, ROPES). And there's nothing wrong with you guys thinking that I don't care anymore anyone can think whatever they want meanwhile they're not being offensive, but something that bothers me is how y'all react to all those callouts: "if you don't like it, don't look or just block us", that sentence at this point it's just disturbing as heck for people with specific preferences, tumblr has the worst blocking system because when you block someone it's to never see them again in your account, and oh surprise!, IT KEEPS APPEARING!!!

I only come with this idea so that we all calm down once and for all, why don't y'all tag ur content as it should have done? not everyone likes torture and being tickled silly while u're being restrained by stocks guys!.

i'm so tired of keep saying this that i'm not having a good time in this community anymore, i feel left out and like the weirdo, the goddamn weirdo who doesn't like tickling version most popular and questionable of sfw, be responsible for what you do for the love of god

The harassment in the community has definitely gotten out of hand. I don't agree with the idea that being restrained while being tickled is always suggestive though I can understand why people would have an issue with it. And yeah tumblr needs to fix the blocking system but from what I see the filtering works pretty well. That's why my artwork and such has a ton of tags that can be filtered out. I'm sorry you're having a bad time in the community. Honestly being such a big name in the community has me worried anout getting these kinds of asks. A lot of people look up to me and want me to know what to say but I'm afraid I don't really have a good way to fix this. I hope things get better in the community and I wish you the best. I want this community to get better

So I recently had this discussion with another user of Uzi being a wholesome cool big sis/parental substitute to a human child. Think maybe you could draw some cute little drawings of this? A drawing of her hugging the kid with them bundled up in a blanket, taking a protective stance in front of them, tucking them into bed, trying to come off as edgy and cool while also cuddling the kid, stuff like that?

I had a whole idea surrounding this concept and I am always a sucker for edgy gremlins having a softer side underneath all that angst. Uzi is not exempt from this, teen angst be damned.

Once the two make it to Earth, the two have to take a short road trip to make it to JC Jensen (on Earrrrth) and along the way, find a runaway/kidnapped kid. N, being the way he is, manages to convince Uzi to let the kid tag along at least until they make it to civilization and can pawn the kid off onto an adult human who’ll know what to do. Typical road trip shenanigans ensue and Uzi finds herself getting more and more attached to this kid (he and N became besties five minutes after he found him), and maybe starts to rethink her whole plan to kill all humans (she knows the higher-ups at JC Jensen are bad but maybe not all of humanity has to be punished for what the company did to her people). Along the way the kidnappers or some bad people catch up to them and Uzi manages to keep the kid safe until N can reach them and invoke the fear of god into these guys. The police and the kid’s parents show up, they send the kid back to his mom, touching moment, blah blah blah, okay, now back to killing some capitalists.

The bottom doodle is from an AU/ OC storyline me and some friends have been making on Discord. I’m sure you all know about X (the tall lady) from the gratuitous number of drawings I’ve been posting, but she also ends up getting an adopted daughter named T (the small disassembly drone), who belongs to @edibletrees2 . T is the last of her generation/line of drones, and is pretty much mentally and physically stuck as a 7-year old and has to eat metal instead of oil. The duo and X end up finding her after she flees her previous squad and take her in.

It takes Uzi some time to get used to having T around (especially after T tried to gnaw on her leg while she was asleep) but as it turns out, feral goth girl edginess is no match for the power of ✨Babie™✨ energy and T has tons of that to spare. The two also end up bonding over having garbage dads (T’s old squad leader was not a nice guy) and Uzi becomes like an overprotective, grumpy big sister (T gets a lot of older siblings/family figures in this AU because it’s what she deserves).

Anyway, Uzi definitely has a softer side under all that teen angst and repression but like hell she’s letting anyone see it.

Excuse me while I panic

Hi, I'm back from finals, but my brain is kind of dead right now, so enjoy this silly two-shot in the meantime.

Word count: 996 | AO3

Summary: Roman needs to get on with the program, realise his crush on Virgil and ask him out, because it's getting ridiculous.

At least Janus thinks so. Everybody does.

A wild crush has appeared, except it was there all along, Roman is just dumb <3

“It’d be a pity if you got over yourself and told Virgil you loved him already. Not that I care about his happiness or anything”.

Roman turned to face the back of the room, where Janus was sitting with a lap full of Patton, who just shrugged in agreement with a quizzical smile.

The treacherous acceptance Patton showed after Janus’ out-of-the-blue comment almost made Roman gasp.

“I just said I want to hang out with him this week”.

“And marry him the month after that, I suppose” Janus retorted.

“Okay, first of all, nah-uh, and second of all, I’d have expected this outright attack for you, but, Patton, are you going to stand watching him bullying me?!”

Just when he was about to reply, Janus intervened again, pretending to be distracted playing with Patton’s curls.

“Not quite, let me rephrase that for you: bullying you into getting ahead in life”.

“Hello?” Roman gestured at himself, only to feel even more increpated by Janus’ glancing at him up and down. “I’m dashing at all times, it’s you who should be putting in the effort”.

As per usual, Janus smirked, unimpressed. He ran a finger, scratching lightly, up Patton’s neck. Underneath the cardigan, a pair of shoulders rolled in a contained shudder.

“I already have. You, though, have achieved nothing. Also, why am I detecting” Janus said, raising a hand to cup behind his ear, “a hint of defensiveness? Honestly… well… as honestly as the budget allows, I am saying this for your sake. Take notes or something, Roman”.

Roman’s weight shifted from one leg to the other, he crossed his arms and gasped, for real this time.

“Excuse me?”

“Excused. I’ll dictate it for you: number one, dot, Janus has made me realise my lack of ambition, comma, I will ask Virgil out”. Janus changed the tone for a second, considering. “Hmmm… let’s say, at once, sounds very you, doesn’t it? Blah, blah, no ambition, I’m very dim, I will ask Virgil out at once, full stop. New paragraph: number two, dot, from now on, comma, I shall listen to Janus’ advice, comma, because he’s so right all the time, full stop”.

Once Roman came out of his astonishment, he closed his gaping mouth and pursed his lips like a child.

“Okay, that’s it, you did this. I’m calling the nerd”.

Janus had no time to complain, as Logan was summoned immediately thereafter.

“Lo, are you okay?!” Patton stirred in place after seeing Logan’s looks.

There, in all bizarre glory, stood Logan, draped in a lab coat with some unidentified stains, knee-length black rubber boots, safety glasses with what dangerously looked like a speckle of blood and a pair of gloves holding a scalpel.

“Don’t worry Patton, he’s just been playing with Remus” Janus offered.

Logan examined the room quickly, then cleared up his throat and blinked himself into his usual attire.

“I was in the middle of something”.

“Clearly” Roman muttered sarcastically.

“What do you need?” Logan made a point to ignore Roman’s comment.

Janus smiled calmly.

“Roman just called you so you can prove him wrong”.

Before the prince could retort, Logan nodded with a vague hint of amusement.

“Well, I can certainly do that”.

“You won’t need to, because it’s him who’s saying” Roman paused and endeavoured to make his best impression of Logan, “falsehoods”.

Logan frowned and crossed his arms.

“That is to be expected, so what is the context?”

“He says I need to ask Virgil out because he’s always right”.

Roman went on saying something along the lines of ‘like, I like Virgil, but not like that. And he’s just implying I’m in love with him, and I would know because, hi, Roman, romance? And Patton isn’t even defending me!’. All of that, Logan didn’t listen to, deciding to speak plainly.

“That’s incorrect, Janus gets things wrong often, it is, in fact, a statistical improbability to be right all the time. But, to be fair, out of all of you, he holds a higher average”.

“Exactly, that’s what I said” Roman shook his hand forward as if to underline how justified he felt. A moment later he went quiet. “Wait…”

“No need. I’ll finish dispatching this soon. So, no, Janus is not always right, but you would do well to heed to his advice on this occasion, seeing how it would help resolve your feelings for Virgil”.

“What?”

“Thank you, Logan” Janus said.

Logan nodded, satisfied with a good job.

“No need, happy to help”.

“Wait, wait, wait!” Roman exclaimed. “I have no feelings for Virgil…” he reconsidered, “not like that!”

In a quick save, Logan hid his laugh with a frown and an inhale.

“Excellent example of being wrong, you’ll be a great help to Logan’s statistics” Janus grinned.

Everybody was looking at him.

Normally, he’d like that, because it was the natural order of things. At the present time, though, he felt paralysed by a sudden onslaught of contradicting feelings and thoughts. Unfortunately, all of these things running through his mind popped in and out too fast for him to process them as more than a jumble of nonsense.

That is to say, he drew a complete blank, cursing his ADHD.

“But-but… I’m not in” he started slowly, trying to organise his ideas.

Then, went down with the first thing to come out of his mouth because working under pressure is not his thing.

“Like, I spend a ton of time with him, but what do you know? And, honestly, you’re just jealous Virge pays more attention to me because he’s almost as great as me. By the way, Janus steals your crofters when you don’t look, someone has to say it, because we’re outing people’s secrets, except not mine’s ‘cause I’m not in love with…”

Patton stood up, knowing he’d have to help everyone brace themselves.

All at the same time, the following was spoken or shouted:

“Snitch!”

“He did what?!”

“Oh my... I’m in love with Virgil”

1) How many complete fics/one shots do you have(that you have not published (Yet)? I don't have any finished. But I have a crap ton in progress!

2) How many WIPS do you have right now? I have 8 one shots and 4 full length fics, plus whatever else is in my inbox!

3) Do you take writing requests or write original ideas, or both? I do both!!!

4) If you do take requests, how many do you currently have? I have 23 in my inbox and then 20 in another folder!

5) How many fandoms do you write for? I write for: DC, Altered Carbon, The killing, Marvel, Walking Dead and Cobra Kai

6) Are there any fandoms you wrote for in the past that you no longer write for? Twilight

7) Do you write for ships, reader inserts or other? I only do reader inserts and OC's.

8) Niche fandoms/characters you write for? n/a

9) Do you read fics as well as write them? Of course! I love reading what other people create!

10) What is your favorite genre to write for? Smut lol

11) What is your favorite trope (to read/write)? To read: I really like slow burn, friends to lovers etc. To write: I like writing feelings being admitted whether it's through an argument/hurt/smut anything. Anything to get the characters to admit their feelings.

12) What do you do to get motivated to write? I have different playlists for different characters. And most of the time, I get really motivated to write when I'm at work or at school.

13) Is there a trope/genre you like to read, but not write? Nope! I am open to all!

14) Any characters/fandoms you want to write for that are never requested? YES! One of my all time favorite movies is Glory (1989 with Matthew Broderick, Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Cary Elwes) and I am a fucking sucker for Colonel Robert Gould Shaw and Major Cabot Forbes and I would absolutely love to get requests for those characters though I know people would never since it's such an old movie and I highly doubt anyone would read it.

15) How long have you been writing fan fiction? I have been writing fan fiction since 5th grade. I'm now a sophomore in college. So for 10+ years.

16) Did you read fan fiction before you started writing? Yes of course! I read so many fan fictions its kinda sad.

17) Do you only post on Tumblr, or any other sites as well? I do have an AO3 account but I mainly only post on Tumblr.

18) What do you personally consider the work counts of "Drabble", "One shots" and "fics"? I think for me, "drabbles" are 200-800 words, "one shots" are 900-1.3k words and then "fics" are anything above that!

19) Which do you prefer to write more? HC, drabbles, oneshots/fics, multi chapter stories, other? I love writing all of the above, but I do like writing drabbles the best because you can just get into it and not have to completely build up a story.

20) Are there any stories you have discontinued? If so, why? I don't think I have any discontinued fics (maybe Electric Love), but I do have a lot on hiatus simply because I lose interest in what I'm writing. But once the interest picks back up, the story picks back up.

21) What is one of your main "pet-peeves" as a writer on Tumblr? People who will berate you or tell you you're wrong. First of all, I accept criticism on how I can do something better, but when a person is like "technically blah blah blah", please, find something better to do. Also people who get upset at what you write. If you see it has trigger warnings that could potentially upset you, don't read. Ignore it. Anything except comment about how it got you upset. If you don't like it, don't read it.

22) Do you write a particular time of day? Most of my work comes from 10 pm - 1 am, but I also write throughout the day as well!

23) Do you listen to music, ambiance/noise, etc to write or do you need silence? As I said previously, I have playlists for specific things. So if I'm writing "Bionic Exile" I have a playlist based on that. Same for "Smoking Out the Window" and others. I also have playlists based on characters.

24) Do you outline your fics at all before writing? With my multi chapter ones, yes. With one shots/drabbles no.

25) Do you post your writing as soon as you finish it, or do you schedule it to come out at a specific time/day? It depends on the piece. if it's a multi chapter fic then I have specific days set aside for that but if it's anything other than that then I normally post it right away!

“Yes, yes, I’ve joined the Avatar, I’m betraying my country, I’m a dishonor to everyone, blah, blah, blah. You can’t tell me anything that I haven’t already heard from your brother.”

“I actually think it’s quite admirable that you chose to become a traitor. It shows that you’ve developed more of a backbone than I ever thought you could. I’m a bit sad that we have to end your life. I always looked forward to having you as a sister.”

(Y/N) was panicking. She had not anticipated that when she came to Omashu with Aang, Katara, and Sokka, that she would be face to face with some of her oldest friends. It had been years since she had seen Mai, Ty Lee, or Azula, but she had always imagined their reunion going a bit differently than this current one, which involved her friends from her past attacking her current friends. But, she supposed, traitors can’t be choosers.

“Isn’t this a special treat?” Azula drawled. “It’s so good to see old friends.” The young princess had grown so much since they had last seen each other. She was fourteen now and her face contained the same ruthlessness as her fathers.’ If (Y/N) was being honest, Azula intimidated her, but there was no way she would let her know that.

“Azula,” she said, nodding at her old friend. Katara and Sokka looked at her, their expressions riddled with surprise.

“I’d heard rumors that you had become a traitor. I wanted to see it with my own eyes, of course. You know how vicious gossip can get.” (Y/N) rolled her eyes.

“Yes, yes, I’ve joined the Avatar, I’m betraying my country, I’m a dishonor to everyone, blah, blah, blah. You can’t tell me anything that I haven’t already heard from your brother.”

The comment caught Mai off-guard, causing the stoic girl to break her gaze from the group to glance at Azula. (Y/N) noticed this instantly. If there was one advantage she had over their enemies, it was being able to tell when they faltered. She shot a flame at Mai, who barely had enough time to dodge it. The fight had begun, and while she and her friends focused on fighting Mai and Ty Lee, Azula slipped away to go after Aang.

The four heroes managed to escape their attackers, but the fight had bothered (Y/N) to her core. If there hadn’t been already, there was no doubt that the Fire Nation was now going to put a bounty on her head. And seeing Azula stirred up similar feelings that she had experienced whenever she saw Zuko. As evil as she had become, it still hurt to fight against her. She had been a troubled child for sure, but (Y/N) had had many good times with her. There were sleepovers where they giggled into the early hours of the morning. Too many secret handshakes and inside jokes to count. While Zuko had become her best friend, she had also become close to Azula as well. Up until the moment she left the Fire Nation, she had considered Azula to be like a sibling. A crazy and evil sibling, but still a sibling nonetheless.

The hunt for Aang’s earthbending teacher did well to take her mind off of things. After their terrifying time in the swamp, it was nice to return to civilization in the Earth Kingdom. The city eventually led them to the underground earthbending competitions, where a small girl reigned supreme over earthbenders twice her size. The event had made (Y/N) a bit uncomfortable, as she wasn’t used to have two-ton rocks flying at her face every second, but who was she to complain?

They tracked the girl back to her home and learned that she was a member of the Beifong family, one of the wealthiest families in the entire Earth Kingdom. They had been invited to join the family for dinner and (Y/N) couldn’t help but wonder if the actual members of the Earth Kingdom could tell she was a fraud. Her green tunic and pants were burnt at the edges from her firebending and she felt like they were eyeing her suspiciously.

“So, (Y/N),” asked Toph’s father, Lao. “I see you’ve traveled far in your journeys with the Avatar. Tell me, where in the Earth Kingdom are you from?”

“Oh, a small town,” she waved a hand to signify its unimportance. “I doubt you’d even know it.”

Lao Beifong raised a suspicious eyebrow.

“She’s a refugee!” Sokka shouted.

“She’s homeless!” Aang shouted at the same time. (Y/N) put her head in her hands.

“She’s a homeless refugee,” Katara clarified, smiling pleasantly at the Beifongs. “We picked her up off the streets when we were passing through her village. Isn’t that right, (Y/N)?”

“I mean, I wouldn’t say you picked me up off the streets, but--”

“I remember the day she was begging me for coins like it was yesterday,” Sokka sighed. (Y/N) kicked him from under the table. He tried his best to suppress his yelp.

“How lucky you are to have the Avatar and his companions save you!” Toph’s mother said. (Y/N) glared at her friends.

“Oh yeah. So lucky.”

Despite their efforts to convince the Beifongs to let Toph accompany them on their journey, and the fact that they had literally saved her life, the group of four was banished from ever returning to the Beifong residence. They were practically thrown out of the house by the guards and were left to continue on their journey.

“It’s okay Aang,” Katara said to her friend. “We’ll find someone to be your earthbending teacher.”

“No one like her,” Aang sighed. He felt defeated and every one of his friends felt the same. Even Momo’s ears were less perkier than usual.

“This is exactly why I hate stuffy rich people,” (Y/N) said haughtily as they walked up the hill to Appa. “They think they know what’s best for everyone.”

“Weren’t you a stuffy rich person?” Aang asked.

“I think that’s besides the point.”

“Hey, wait up!” Toph shouted as she ran to catch up with them. She carried a knapsack over her shoulder. “My parents changed their minds! They said I could come with you!”

“That’s amazing!” Aang cheered.

(Y/N) pursed her lips. She knew how rich people acted. She had grown up around them her whole life. They never changed their minds. Not unless someone richer than them told them to. She could tell Toph was lying, but she understood why. Her parents treated her like she was helpless and wouldn’t let them out of her sight. In reality, Toph was anything from it. She was tougher than all four of them combined.

She climbed Appa and reached down to help Katara get up. “Alright, let’s get ready to go! We’ve got an Avatar to teach.”

Blind Date/Set Up By Friends

“No.”

The word comes out of your mouth before you can even attempt to stop it.

“Shit,” he says in reply.

The couple at the table next to you glance up before quickly looking away, not wanting to be caught and embarrassed on their special night. You don’t care at all, though, because you’ve been set up on a blind date with Jim fucking Hopper.

The most irritating man in the entire universe.

The exact same thoughts seem to be running through his mind because his jaw is moving and he’s staring at you. Stood there in a fucking beige (is that linen?) suit with a Hawaiian shirt on underneath, hair combed, beard trimmed. And he’s staring at you like you’re the anomaly here.

I’m gonna kill Jodie.

Raising your eyebrows, your hands lift.

“Right. Well. There’s obviously been a mistake here.”

“You think?” His eyebrows are also rising, hands going to his hips.

Even though you despise him, that irks you.

“Okay, so, you can just go, then.” You sit back down, hands returning to the menu you’d dropped on the table in your sudden standing.

“Me?”

You glance up at him, his tone and indignation surprising you. “Yeah. Bye.”

Your eyes drop back to the menu, looking at it but not exactly reading because he’s not moving.

“Uh, and why me?”

I’m dealing with a fucking child.

Lips parting, you look up at him like it’s the most obvious thing in the world, because it is.

“Because I was here first?”

Hopper snorts, arching an eyebrow. “What, you gonna eat on your own?”

“Yeah.”

Yeah, I’m going to eat on my own on Valentine’s Day and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Who even sets two people up on a date on Valentine’s Day?!

Before you can even think about looking at the menu again, Hopper scoffs.

“Well, I don’t want to go, you go.”

“No,” you shoot back incredulously, face twisting like you’ve tasted something sour.

He stares at you. And then he shrugs.

“Fine.”

Gripping the back of the chair opposite you, he pulls it back and sits in it.

“Oh my God,” you hiss, “Go and sit somewhere else.”

Adjusting his suit jacket, he then casts a hand around, gesturing at the restaurant. “Can’t you see it’s busy here? I’m not gonna find another seat.”

“Then go.”

“No.”

Then, he lifts up his menu and peruses it, a finger tapping against his lips. You just stare at him, feeling hot with frustration and irritation. Yes, you could just leave and buy something from the store on the way home and settle in for a cosy night, but you’d so been looking forward to a night out in a nice restaurant and some stimulating conversation from someone Jodie had said was perfect for you.

Perfect for you.

PERFECT FOR YOU.

That’s all you’d manage to get out of her about your date, apart from that it was on Valentine’s Day at Enzo’s and the employees there were aware of what kind of date it was.

You just can’t stop staring at him as he casually flicks through the menu while you quietly simmer with anger. This is why he gets under your skin so much; he’s just so stubborn. Exhaling a breath through your teeth, you force yourself to browse your own menu, even though you already know what you’re going to order. You’d arrived early, hating the idea of being flustered by trying to locate your date, and he’d... well, he’d arrived on time actually.

A pleasant surprise, but not enough to soothe your skin that prickles at the mere mention of him. Your friends and colleagues just laugh when the topic comes up.

Hop’? Hopper? The charming Chief of the town? Heart of gold underneath all that gruffness? Those big, strong arms and that flirty mouth? How could you not like him?

Well, you just... don’t. No reason. He’s not done anything to you, not said anything, you just... don’t. You can’t even really remember the first time you spoke to him when you moved here. Was it at a bar? The diner? You just remember the feeling when a friend had introduced you; prickly skin and a flipping stomach. His attitude towards you had left you feeling strange, too; you remember that he was blunt and eager to get away, barely looking you in the eye.

What an asshole.

... But, yeah, all right, maybe you had found him attractive, but then you’d seen him in bars picking up enthusiastically willing women left, right and centre and it had just... irked you, considerably.

Who does he think he is? I bet he thought whoever he was meeting tonight was going to be another one, that she’d be completely bowled over and was going to fall at his feet. Well, absolutely not, no thank you.

Every meeting you’ve had since, passing each other on the street, meeting each others gaze at the bar, having to converse in group conversations at parties, standing in line behind each other at the store, has been strained, with him either quickly looking away a little too late, so obviously not wanting to engage with you, or you just flat out ignoring him.

The waiter arrives with a smile which you return, somewhat forced, and if he’s noticed the more than slight tension at the table, he doesn’t let on at all. After he cheerfully takes your order, you then just have to sit and watch Hopper take his sweet time, one leg now balancing on the thick thigh of his other, menu in one large hand, talking to the waiter like he knows him, asking about what’s best and blah, blah, blah.

Crossing your arms, you stare at him, hoping the force of your gaze will somehow will him to hurry up. He glances at you once to just ask, “You want another bread basket?”

“Yes,” you grit out.

What kind of a question is that? Of course you do.

Snapping the menu shut, somehow the smooth motion of it just fuelling your irritation, he smiles at the waiter as he hands it back, and then the waiter leaves... and it’s just you two again.

You watch Hopper’s gaze travel the room, taking in all the laughing, chatting people, most if not all couples. He folds his own arms, the material of the suit stretching over his biceps, and you swiftly look away as his gaze reaches you.

“Guess Jodie’s a shit matchmaker, huh.”

Oh, God... You can’t just ignore him. Well, you can, but you imagine he’d just carry on talking anyway.

Taking a breath, which could be interpreted as exasperated, you nod. “Yeah. Didn’t even know you knew her.”

He shrugs. “We went to high school together.”

“Wow, she’s had to put up with you that long─”

“What is your problem with me?”

Your mouth remains open, your next word dying on your tongue as you stare at him. It stays open as you point at yourself, eyebrows shooting up, watching him just look at you, expressionless.

“Uh... What? You’re the one who has a problem with me.”

Now he frowns. “Excuse me?”

What.

Are you kidding me.

“Oh, don’t look so affronted, you always seem so irritated when I’m around and that you hope you don’t get stuck talking to me.”

He scoffs, but doesn’t say anything for a few moments, just makes half-laughing, half-astonished sounds. “... Me? I seem like that? You look at me like I’m the shit on your shoe!”

“If that’s true it’s only because of how you look at me.”

“And how do I look at you?” He says the words accusingly, challenging you, and it throws you for a moment because do his thoughts not influence his expressions?

It’s your turn to scoff as your eyebrows rise. “You... You look at me like...”

Nothing comes out of your mouth, every single encounter with him flashing through your mind, the filter of pre-conceived irritation and notions falling away.

Oh, no...

The times he’s looked away quickly after you’ve met his gaze... Not out of not wanting to engage but... not wanting to be caught looking. His curtness the few times you have spoken, not out of rudeness or wanting to get away, but because of awkwardness in your presence. The fact he’s sat down and has stayed.

Even the way he’d said ‘You think?’ minutes before... not said sarcastically, but stated. Asking you.

And he... he looks at you with tender eyes.

Oh my God...

Hopper shifts in his chair as he clears his throat, your thoughts and realisations most likely playing out across your features.

“... Uh...” Your mouth is still open, too, not knowing what to say.

I’ve been such an idiot.

He’s pushing his fork around on the table-cloth with his finger, waiting for whatever you’re going to say, probably expecting to be shot down or for you to laugh. Instead, you give him the truth.

“... I don’t have a problem with you, really... I just thought you had one with me.” Your voice comes out a lot quieter than you’d intended, but very much sheepish.

His head shakes as his jaw moves slightly, but there’s a light smile on his lips, and his gaze finally lifts to meet yours again; boldly and openly.

The tenderness is there.

“No. I don’t have a problem with you.”

“Okay.” The single word leaves you quietly, and something deep inside you relaxes.

“Do you want me to go?” he says, just as quiet as you had, and it’s like you’re the only two people in the room.

Licking your lips, you shake your head. “No. No, I’d... I’d like you stay. I think we should start this all over again.”

Hopper nods a few times, his smile lingering.

“Yeah, I think so, too.”

You find you’re smiling as well, your fingers lacing together in your lap.

“All right... What do you wanna talk about?”

1. The More You Know, M, 72380

I was incepted to write this fic when I said to Distractivate, “I should write an enemies to lovers Trivia AU,” and before I knew it...I was writing a trivia AU. I started the doc January 2. So. Wow. And my apologies, I couldn’t make them enemies because I am soft, soft, soft, and frankly, so are they. This fic fought me a lot. I was in a ton of physical pain because of a nerve problem, the pandemic started, blah blah blah...I wrote some of my favorite things. I could not have done it without Distractivate and @vivianblakesunrisebay and @this-is-not-nothing and probably scores of other people listening to me whine and helping me with ideas. But also thank you Noah Reid for taking a picture holding a fish and then later eating a burrito on a roadside with gusto because without those, Musician! Patrick would never have visited that taco stand, or needed to do origami. The response was OVERWHELMING and I may never see it again but I really truly appreciate every comment and every kudo and every rec anyone ever made. That story is and was a labor of love and I miss playing trivia as much as I miss bringing that world to life. And I was lucky enough to be gifted a podfic as well.

2. This Must Be The Place, E, 11508

So. The entire time I was writing TMYK, I had a playlist of eighties and nineties songs that I felt like Patrick was into and loved. There were also more recent songs but This Must Be the Place and Handle With Care were, like, the Pinnacle of the love story I was writing. And I had a place in TMYK where Patrick and the Senior Center (the SC Squared) would perform a medley for David a la Open Mic. But it ruined the momentum of my ending. SO. I cut it. And let’s be real, I had a lot of trouble writing it. So. I CUT IT. Flash forward to me being stuck on a different WIP (still stuck) and getting a prompt from TINN about Patrick performing for the one year anniversary of the Art House. WELL. The coda was born and I got to go back to the world I loved and use that origami for (spoiler alert).

3. Five Ways to Ruin a First Date, T, 6830

I have fest fears so I didn’t think I was going to participate in Frozen Over this year. But at 2:00 am a week before the deadline, I decided that an only one sled fic was the trope for me. I don’t know if I was right haha. BUT! Once again I was aided and abetted by the best friends and betas a girl could have and me, notoriously slow writing me, got it done. Not to toot my own horn but I am pretty happy with Patrick’s list of dates. Which I may make a series someday because I could make these idiots go on cozy first dates for the rest of time. And I guess I could let them date past that too. Also, no matter what, these two want to kiss.

4. I Think We’re Alone Now, T, 3306

I have a real tendency to make a joke become a reality. I co-wrote this fic with the delightful @rockinhamburger and it is criminally under seen. Yes, it is dialogue-only. Yes, it is a play off of Buffy. Yes, there is banter and kissing and canon. I wrote some of my best jokes for this fic and Rockinhamburger killed it with backstory and tenderness. Go and read this. You will not be disappointed.

5. I am working on two WIPS currently and brainstorming a couple joint ventures with some friends so hopefully 2021 brings more of David and Patrick into our world. I am hoping to have a new multi chapter sickfic posted in January and what I call Air!Pat will be out...soon enough 😂 Please tell Patrick to cooperate; he is kind of stubborn.

MORE IN-DEPTH

There isn’t too much about Romil’s early life that veers from the average. Some might say his life was a textbook case of the perfect middle class suburban lifestyle. White picket fences surrounding a happy little family of RJ, his parents, his 3 sisters, and even a family dog. They couldn’t be more average. Far from wealth but abundant in the mundane. His mother’s unrelenting schedule as a registered nurse pretty much gave way to RJ spending a good amount of time with his dad. Most of the time they spent together was in the kitchen as his dad tried about a dozen recipes to somehow satisfy his family full of picky eaters. It’s really those days that would lead RJ to fall in love with cooking. From cooking alongside his dad to making dinner for his family some nights, he definitely found his passion at a very young age.

As he grew older, that passion never really faded. Romil would decide he’d chase his passions. The plan was pretty simple. Get the hell out of New Mexico, ( blah blah, he totally didn’t really plan this middle bit well ) open a restaurant of his own some day, and travel the world with all his profits. Head full of big, bright dreams he’d finish highschool and move to El Dora with his girlfriend. It was all meant to be easy.

Unsurprisingly, his overzealous dreams took a quick halt when he realized it wasn’t as effortless as he hoped it’d be. Everything he was trying to pursue sat at a complete standstill and he was completely and utterly broke. Life on his own so young without the help of his parents ( much too prideful to reach out to them ) turned out to be a bit tougher than he thought. Bills piled and his relationship would break under the pressure of financial stress. In addition, his own rose-colored glasses of how things were meant to be shatter -- albeit for better or for worse.

It’s been several years now and there’s been no progress in his original ( as he sees it now ) a little bit frivolous dream. Parts of him still hopes something magical will happen, but even then he doubts. All of which, boils down to where he is now; just a bit stuck in a rut. What was once someone overly lively turned a little bit inward, colder. Jaded by the let downs that he wasn’t quite prepared for.

PERSONALITY:

Definitely has a case of big dreams but no thoughts. While he wants alot of things and is rather self motivated to achieve them, he hasn’t a clue really where to start. And he can be a bit too prideful to ever want to ask anyone. The best way I can put is mildly aimless but he just knows he shooting for something.

Tendency to come off a little mysterious ( it’s the scorpio rising for me lmao). Not at all a social type and tends to keep most people at an arms length. Appears to be feeling great and very happy / proud of about where he is in life on the outisde -- but, he is definitely not. You’d have to know him very well to see though that façade. It’s been too many years and he’s gotten good at it. Though, the loyalist friend you’d probably ever had they’re someone he’s willing to care for. Though, he probably won’t spend a ton of time saying that to them but he might make them a box of cookies randomly just to say i love you.

Often his own big ideas cloud his judgment. Tendency to be blinded by his desire to be successful in something ( as he does feel like quite the failure in everything ). Maybe a little melodramatic at time and definitely self-destructive when things don’t go precisely as he’d “planned”.

Hi! It’s me again. I’ve got this BellamyxReader idea where the reader has become more and more reckless, and when she kills someone she doesn’t even flinch. Everyone’s worried, especially Bellamy. When they get to restrain chipped-Raven and they’re taking shifts to check on her. While it’s the reader’s turn, Raven says something that makes her snap. I have 2 ideas for the end: either the readers goes out and points a gun to her head or she points it to Raven. Either way, Bellamy stops her. (I was thinking that maybe no one knows about it and that the reader’s been keeping it under control with the meds Kane managed to give her before she was sent to earth with the 100 (maybe she could be Kane’s daughter).Then, when Jaha started chipping everyone, ALIE ordered someone to steal her meds and she didn’t really want to tell anyone about the missing meds. She started to go through the maniac phase of it, and people around her (Bellamy, Clarke) started to notice that something was off Then, coming back to my original request lol, Raven told her that they stole their meds to mess with her and you can connect it with the rest of my other request)

Favorite story you wrote: oh my goodness, it is so hard to pick. I’d say Simple Pleasures because it took me forever to write and I really threw everything I had into it. I just had a lot of fun with it, and it was one of the first multi-chapter fics I had finished!

Story you were nervous to post: I am always nervous to post fics, especially when it comes to new fandoms. BUT I will say that Paint me in Trust is one fic I was (and still am) super nervous to post. I honestly thought it was poor writing and I struggled to get any words down on page at first, and (now) I’m mainly nervous because it’s my first time writing smut. I’m so blown away by the reaction though, oh my goodness.

How do you choose your titles: choosing titles is the bane of my existence. I will postpone it as long as I can. I suck at it, I struggle with it, and blah. Recently, I’ve been turning to song lyrics though!

Do you outline: HECK YES. I never used to, but now I do and it’s changed my life. I started outline majorly with Simple Pleasures, and I haven’t stopped since then. Even for one-shots, I write a general idea of where I want the fic to go!

Complete number of stories: on ao3, 66!

In progress: one! Paint me in Trust. I mean, I also am writing the To Infinity and Beyond series, but they’re all one-shots so I don’t really count it.

Do you accept prompts: I usually do! Right now, they’re closed because I’m working away at ~25 fics right now, but I hope to open them as soon as I get through a bunch of those fics.

re: your tags about the tip of the megamind fanfic iceberg and having a ton of unpublished material, can I just say, I am WILDLY curious about what all is lurking in your unpublished drafts

Thanks, Dal! Yeah, I was looking at them yesterday, and a bunch of them actually surprised me. But I’m very close to finishing a first chapter, so you’ll finally get to see at least a little something!

The tricky thing is, once I get a plot idea in my head, I start thinking of cool symbols, character arcs, and easter eggs I can stick in. And then I’m like, “Ooh, we should add more description here to get the reader to think about this theme!” and “Ooh, we should add more suspense here so the climax is more exciting later!” And then I’m like, “Ooh, I should have cute little illustrations for each chapter, like in Harry Potter!” (Cause I’ll never forget how those little pictures got me to keep reading all night as a kid. :P)

So I have a bunch of really exciting outlines in my Drive that get my blood pumping. But when I actually go to write normally, it’s really emotional and atmospheric, but it rarely makes sense. I think that’s kinda why all my drafts are super dramatic, without context, and relatively short.

And then there’s the fact that I should probably be putting more energy into original writing. And I probably could just switch the names of the characters. But Megamind and Minion are so distinctive, and their characters are so embedded in this fandom canon, I’d have to completely re-establish who they are. When it comes to them, I think I’d rather deal with the canon our fandom has already set out than to introduce them to the wide field of sci-fi.

(Wow, this answer is getting kinda long; I hope that’s okay. Some intrinsic realization is actually happening here!)

Over the years, I’ve noticed some common themes in Megamind fanfiction that I don’t necessarily agree with. So, a lot of the things I want to write are meant to challenge those ideas.

For example, the relationship between Megamind and Minion can be easily classified as abusive. They’re really close, but the way Megamind treats Minion still isn’t normal, and the whole fandom kinda just overlooks that. It’s just worth exploring much more than it has been.

So, the “big fic” that I’m pulling together right now is made of the little fics that I wrote separately that all shared similar themes: Minion’s isolation, his lack of independence, his lack of confidence in his own judgment, and the ways that Megamind manipulates him. I want to turn it into a story where Minion grows out of that role, and maybe the two come to a more healthy relationship. Or maybe they don’t. One is easier to write than the other.

(And that’s not even mentioning all the headcanons and world-building I’ve done for their homeworld and the outline I have for THAT story. Geez. That one will be so much work, I probably will go the extra mile to change their names and hopefully that published somewhere, someday.)

The reason it’s taking so long is my perfectionism; I want the descriptions to be emotional, to draw the readers attention to the right themes, to use consistent imagery and symbols, to manipulate the pacing and tension, and make the fic stand out from others using pictures and blah, blah, blah... so I’m basically re-writing all the short fics to make them fit.

But since I’m also a full-time college student with an internship... I should probably just get my priorities straight, post fast, and move on with my life. But I been thinking about this stuff so long, I want to do it right, you know?

Anyway, that’s a little background about the unpublished skeletons I found in my Google Drive closet the other day. Thanks for asking. XD

Why NYCC Will Never Surpass SDCC: And Other Fun Things We Learned This Weekend

We were ready to go this weekend. We had everything queued up and were stalking the Twitter tags. We even had a special correspondent at NYCC to get all the latest firsthand. And guess what we found out? A whole lotta nothing. Even scouring the wrap-up posts this morning, they seem kinda… blah. Stuff happened. Panels were held. Cosplay was awesome. But nothing stuck out. No major announcements, outside of toy-related things, were made. That’s when we discovered that NYCC isn’t on the same playing field as SDCC and may never get there.

Is that a bad thing? Eh, depends on who you ask. Not every single convention needs to be the place where every franchise releases groundbreaking information. It’d be an overload. It’d be a constant news cycle no one could keep up with and it’d be like the “real” news. We’d all tune it out. It’d become background noise and then studios would have to do something crazy to get noticed, and honestly, that’s not what anyone wants, but the idea that NYCC is the toy collector’s convention is a little sad too.

In our opinion, it’s poised to be a big deal. As it’s ending, there are a ton of TV shows coming out. For instance, The Walking Dead started its tenth season on the very last night of NYCC and it was a normal, run-of-the-mill interview cycle for the cast, of which only four appeared. Was it nice to have a convention where the bigger stars appeared too? Yes, but it feels more like it’s catered to the media and less like it might be for the fans, as is the case at SDCC. Don’t get us wrong, it’s nice to see all our favorites in polished interviews, but each one is asking the same thing. If you’ve seen one, you’ve seen ’em all is the motto of NYCC, and that’s not a great look.

Oh, but what’s the point? Well, that’s pretty easy. So many of the major announcements made, especially by lesser known studios and shows, were ignored or forgotten shortly after they happened because they were eclipsed by the bigger guys. And why is that bad, you may ask? If we don’t get all of it, we can’t make informed decisions on what to watch. If we keep only hearing about Marvel’s 42,000 new shows, we’re going to keep getting the same old stuff, and we don’t want that. Promise. It gets stale quick. Also, let’s be real for a second. No one is watching commercials. Most fandom news comes from websites that are after clicks. If the only stuff that gets clicks is the stuff that’s already popular, that’s a problem. All we’re saying is maybe spread it out a little. Save some stuff for NYCC too. We deserve to have all the information before we make a decision about what kind of entertainment to obsess over. Fans are smarter than the studios give us credit for, and we think it’s time they act like it.
