Or, take a parallel universe where Louis and Harry were never together, mix in a two year hiatus and an impending comeback, pour in a dash of lost fans, two tablespoons of strong friendship and a Modest! employee with a good idea. Add a squeeze of pretending to be a couple, lots of kisses and a tattoo or two. Stir. Serve: the mother of all publicity stunts.

(aka Harry and Louis fake a relationship for publicity. Eventually it becomes a lot less fake and a lot more real.)

It's slightly strange that Harry doesn't recognize him, but Louis doesn't really mind because, for some reason that's a mystery to him, Harry still somehow seems to be smitten with him.

or, the one where Harry just had surgery and is at the mercy of anesthetics, and Louis is having far too much fun video taping Harry's initial reaction to seeing him.

Harry is sitting there, so fucking casual, and Louis realizes in a split second he was not ready. When Harry walked out in Detroit and never looked back, he was a boy verging on a man, still only twenty years old, but there's a man in his place now. Hard and resolute, yes, but still, for the first time in a long time, Louis can kind of see the old Harry in him. The soft, directness of his gaze, the hesitant smile he gives to Lou, the way he wrings his ridiculously large hands in his lap.

He's a little bit the eager sixteen year old puppy dog again, his innocence and sweetness resurrected miraculously, and Louis freezes in place. He was prepared to face the asshole Harry. He was prepared to meet a whole new Harry.

Louis is not prepared to meet one of the old incarnations of Harry, and it absolutely tears him up.

Or the fic where Harry spirals out of control, the band breaks up, and then he shows back up, five years later.

“Fertile,” Louis says, and then laughs because it sounds stupid to say out loud. He hasn’t ever really thought of himself in those terms. Baby-making terms. It’s just one of those things his body can do, like exercise, or go without tea. Doesn’t mean he will.

Harry carefully stood up and was on his way to the window to look outside when he ran his hand through his hair, and it stopped entirely too soon.

He froze then began fervently patting all over his head. Where was his hair? He’d been growing it out for a couple of years now and it was finally almost to the length he’d had as a goal the entire time. How could it have gotten cut off overnight?

Harry rushed over to the mirror hung on the wall adjacent to the window.

Oh shit. What the hell was happening? Harry leaned closer and saw that not only was his hair cropped shorter than he’d ever wanted to go again, but it looked like he had the beginning of crow’s feet by his eyes. Those definitely weren’t there yesterday! And what happened to his tattoos? He still had some of them, like the star and the letters he’d gotten for his mum and Gemma, but most of the rest were missing and there were a few he’d never seen before instead.

What. The. Fuck.

Or the one where Harry goes to bed angry with his bandmates and wakes up in a universe where One Direction was never formed and he has to find a way back home. Home definitely has nothing to do with his best friend and bandmate, Louis. That would be ridiculous.

Could this be some kind of strange coincidence?”

“I hate you,” Harry hisses, forcing his eyes back into Nick’s direction, uncaring that the mic must have picked it up. “I thought we agreed that you were going to play fair.”

“I’m sure I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Nick denies, except he’s holding up a picture of Louis’ face now, sharp cheekbones prominent, soft lashes nearly sweeping against his cheeks as he looks down, and his fucking mouth –

“A hundred and two!” Nick crows, all but clapping his hands together in glee. “The highest it’s ever been!”

“To be fair, I did bend over the desk on purpose,” Louis’ voice comes crackling in the headphones. Harry practically breaks his neck whipping his head around at the sound of it, gaping at him through the glass panel. “You can’t really blame him for getting a little excited about that, can you?”

yeah, sorry. it’s cause i’m super disorganized? i’m lucky i have tags and then masterposts for my own fics, tbh. the only way to really find my fic recs is by going through either my fic rec tag, which is where i reblog fic posts for fics that i’ve read and enjoyed and isn’t organized at all, or my “my fic rec” tag, which are fic recs i’ve made myself. sometimes it’s my monthly fic lists (those do have their own tag as well!), sometimes it’s my own fic masterposts, and sometimes it’s from asks like this. that’s all i really have though, since this blog is a hot mess of whatever i put out and am feeling up for at that point in time. hah i don’t actually think i’ve had a request for canon compliant fics, though, so i can go ahead and do one now. i will be straight up, though, and tell you that at the same time things started going crazy with this band (zayn leaving, babygate, the hiatus, etc etc etc) i was in a situation that actually brought about ptsd for me, so i’m really really touchy about canon compliant fics that are set more recently. it has to be done in a certain way for me to be able to handle that. because of that, this canon compliant rec is going to be fairly heavy on fics that are set like x factor-tmh era. also, i’m gonna include canon divergent as well since in some ways those are canon with some changes.

The 5 Most Important Fics to Me

I totally forgot to do this but @casuallyhl tagged me in this awhile ago and I just saw @softgolfdaddy's post floating around! Get ready for the fluff (after the first one).

1. Hiding Place by @alivingfire always and forever. My favorite story to tell about this fic is that I read it somewhere within my first two weeks of this fandom. I started reading it on a Sunday morning and did not leave my room for like 8 hours. My roommate was getting worried because I didn't come out for food or anything. I read all 430k or something in one sitting. At the time I had no real concept of what that word count meant which is why I was not better at managing my time.

2. In Dreams by dolce_piccante. This was the very first fic I ever read in the fandom. I found it by trawling the "larry stylinson" tag, and it was what made me go to my sister for more fics.

3. Relief Next to Me by dolce_piccante. So my fluffy heart can be at peace.

4. Falling for Me Won't Be a Mistake by @all-these-larrythings. Because I found a fic that ticked every single possible box on my fic wishlist and it was beautifully written on top of that.

5. taste on my tongue by @bethaboolou. I also read this early on and I keep going back to it over and over and over again. Because they have a healthy communicative relationship and its wonderful. And apparently I love reality television au's.

Ok, let me start off by saying that I am very, very choosy about canon fics and I am unable to complete ones I found lacking. You can say that I avoid reading canon fics because I am fragile. Also, I understand what kind of fic you want and I will do my best. So, here goes:

To be fair, they probably wouldn’t do it even if they were out. But if they were two uni students, both in Paris for an exchange, meeting over fallen books at the library, or because of mutual friends, or watching Monet’s Water Lilies?“How would we dance?” Harry murmurs, mouth almost pressed to Louis’ cheek, so close he can feel his warmth. What a picture they must make, two millionaires freezing in a park and dreaming of a different life.An account of the events of November 2014. Canon-compliant.

All encompassingly Louis.

That much is obvious, but the way Zayn says it makes it sound profound.

“Tour’s gonna be weird as fuck,” Louis says with a laugh that’s a lot lighter than how he feels.

Nothing You Can Do (But You Can Learn How To Be You In Time) by Teumessian @tummylinson

A Canon Compliant Semi-AU. Louis braids Harry’s hair. There are good times, bad times, fancy houses, supportive bandmates, secret boyfriends, small rebellions, bigger revolutions, some nail varnish, ribbons, cute clothing, and a Pinterest.

**Angsty and smutty and fluffy. (this one has daddy kink though. dunno if that’s your thing)

Harry is sitting there, so fucking casual, and Louis realizes in a split second he was not ready. When Harry walked out in Detroit and never looked back, he was a boy verging on a man, still only twenty years old, but there’s a man in his place now. Hard and resolute, yes, but still, for the first time in a long time, Louis can kind of see the old Harry in him. The soft, directness of his gaze, the hesitant smile he gives to Lou, the way he wrings his ridiculously large hands in his lap.

He’s a little bit the eager sixteen year old puppy dog again, his innocence and sweetness resurrected miraculously, and Louis freezes in place. He was prepared to face the asshole Harry. He was prepared to meet a whole new Harry.

Louis is not prepared to meet one of the old incarnations of Harry, and it absolutely tears him up.

Or the fic where Harry spirals out of control, the band breaks up, and then he shows back up, five years later.

**Not the kind you are looking for. I can’t see Harry or Louis in this light tbqh. But it is canon compliant with a boatload of angst. I remember having to stop reading a couple of times because of crying too hard. It is well written.

Louis doesn’t say anything again so Harry whispers, “Just stay here with me for a while, yeah? I’ll take care of you.”

Louis is quiet. He never picks his head up, but Harry can see the pillow move from where he’s nodding and his fingers tighten around Harry’s. “Yeah,” Louis says. “Yeah, all right.”

** Canon compliant future fic. It is great. Give it a read.

Like You’ve Been Here Before by SNAKEHABITATTURNAROUND

It’s 2022 and even though the band’s been done a good few years there are, you know, one or two things that never got much closure. Zayn, though happily married with kids, still deals with some of the shittier aspects of having been in the public eye. The others are… the others.

When Niall and Harry convince them all to take off to the Greek coast and see out a ten year old promise to write the True and Accurate memoir of their time together, Zayn suspects there may be other motives at play - viz., the discussion and restoration of Harry’s relationship with Louis.

**Canon compliant future fic. The band has a reunion.

“I was not supposed to do what? Tell me please,” Harry urges, taking Louis’ hands gently in his.

Some hearts don't break even, some are simply shattered. So can you really learn to un-love someone?

Harry wasn’t wrong about that, not in a general sense. Lots of omegas did seek out rich alphas and betas, hoping or planning to go into heat at the right time. Plenty of omegas saw this as their duty, especially if their families weren’t well off. Worse, Louis couldn’t honestly say he’d never thought about it. If that had been his life, his goal, Louis would feel pretty good about himself now. As it is…Louis feels like shit.

Struggling with grieving and depression since his dad died, Harry has never felt so alone. It’s too much to cope with on his own, but he feels like a burden when he tries to open up with people.

Then he meets Louis.

A Famous/Non-Famous turned Famous/Famous AU where Harry makes the biggest mistake of his life and Louis’ left to pick up the pieces.
