Lapsis (2020)
Tumblr media
If you want to start a discussion about the gig economy, big companies who take advantage of their workers, the way people get trapped in their jobs, and robots in the task force, you could make a documentary. The smarter move is to make an entertaining movie that jump-starts the same conversation organically, which is exactly what Lapsis is.
In an alternate present, a new type of computer is revolutionizing the trading market. You can make a lot of money connecting the large metallic cubes that make it run. Just haul your spool of cable through kilometers of rugged terrain while the company app keeps track of your progress. After Ray (Dean Imperial) suddenly loses his job, he needs quick cash for his ailing brother Jamie (Babe Howard). Through one of his shady connections, Ray gets assigned a prized, high-paying cable route most cablers only see in the brochures. There’s something dodgy going on but can Ray even afford to get involved?
For most of Lapsis, we follow Ray as he figures out what this job entails and then does it. The conflicts come naturally because they’re part of the systems writer/director/composer/editor Noah Hutton is criticizing. Ray may be getting paid a lot per route one look at the man proves to you he’s not an experienced hiker. What if something happens to him? Will the company send a drone? Probably… but only because his trail needs to be completed; about him, they don't care. It gets even more insidious once Ray learns about the ground robots. To be clear, there’s no big conspiracy going on. No one’s getting murdered by robots. Everything about this operation is completely legal, so why do you feel so apprehensive about it?
You know why. Some people will get rich and make a comfortable living doing something they might even enjoy. They’re making peanuts compared to the traders benefiting from the ridiculous-looking cubes and endless trails of cables. It's slimy. You’re reminded of a lot of real-world businesses who might not individually be doing everything you see here but collectively, are.
You’ve got drama and tension embedded into the DNA of your story. The next step is to shape worthwhile characters, which you get in Ray and a friend he makes while cabling, Anna (Madeline Wise). He could’ve been sleazy and unlikable. Instead, he’s the everyman, a good guy that's fallen on hard times. We’d all like to think that when faced with injustice we’d step up, sign the petitions, tell the press, etc. Would we though? Your uncertainty about him, the mystery, the robots, and his route are what make Lapsis entertaining rather than a lesson.
Lapsis is a robustly constructed film. All of its pieces work in unison, with the only blemishes being a couple of coincidences here and there to keep the plot going smoothly, and a mystery that’s easier to decipher than intended. The central performance from Dean Imperial is excellent, its story is smart, and the very last scene really makes you pause and think. To me, it felt as though the director was turning the camera back towards us, asking "but what about you?" It’s a movie with lasting power. (July 30, 2021)

New Horror and Sci-Fi Movies Break Out at Fantasia Fest
https://ift.tt/3eSvxiF
The Fantasia International Film Festival has been serving up fresh and often visionary new voices in sci-fi, horror and other genres for nearly a quarter of a century, and this year’s 24th edition was no different — except, of course, it was all different.
Fantasia, which under normal circumstances physically takes place in Montreal in mid-summer, went online in 2020 for an all-digital edition that kicked off on August 20 and concluded on September 2. The event was a mix of films that were either available on demand at any time throughout the fest (up until a maximum ticket capacity was reached) or were designated to stream “live,” as it were, on one or two certain dates at specific times (also with a maximum ticket capacity).
Although press from around the world was invited to cover the festival, the entire program was geoblocked to Canadian ticket buyers only — which means that as a fan you would have to live in Canada to watch the festival offerings online (this was due to exhibition and distribution restrictions for other parts of the world). In addition, a handful of films — including The Descent director Neil Marshall’s new one, The Reckoning — were available only to a limited list of select guests.
Whether these kinds of restrictions helped or hindered the festival’s transition to an online format remains to be seen. On the other hand, our experience watching films was flawless, with no buffering or other technical problems during a single screening. That aspect of holding a digital festival was handled perfectly.
Less perfect, to be frank, was our personal experience. Being at a film festival or any large event or conference is like being in a bubble where all you do is focus on what you’re there to do; trying to do the same on your couch or at your kitchen table, with all the distractions of home, family, work and other elements of everyday life was way more challenging.
We didn’t watch as many films as we wanted to, but the highlights only proved that Fantasia’s longstanding reputation as a breeding ground for provocative, groundbreaking new talent will stay intact for this year and beyond.
HBO Max
Class Action Park (USA)
Our favorite film of the fest — which you can see right now if you’re lucky enough to have HBO Max — is this wild look back at a New Jersey water/amusement park where there were no rules, anything could happen and the lunatics (i.e. severely underqualified teenagers) were literally running the asylum. It was all fun and games… until it wasn’t, as the injuries, lawsuits and tragic deaths began to pile up.
The documentary delves into the history of the park, which was hatched by the insane/genial Eugene Mulvihill, the unsafe rides that he developed, the crazy atmosphere of the place and the tragedies that brought it down. But like all great docs, Class Action Park is also about an era — a snapshot of a time (the late ‘80s and early ‘90s) when kids were allowed way more freedom than they are now, with results that one could view as both good and bad. It’s a sobering, thoughtful and, yes, hilarious film. (****½)
The Department of Special Projects
Fried Barry (South Africa)
Think of this as the hard-R version of E.T. A heroin addict named Barry (stuntman Gary Green in an astonishing first-time performance) is airlifted from a Cape Town street into an alien spacecraft, painfully probed and dropped back down — only his body is inhabited by an extra-terrestrial explorer. The next few days are a wild, often gruesome yet oddly poignant journey in which the alien/Barry trips on drugs, dances the night away at a club, is brutally tortured, has sex with multiple women, becomes an instant father, rescues children from a predator and even reconciles with Barry’s own family.
Writer/director Ryan Kruger adapted this from his own short film and, as with several other movies we saw, occasionally has trouble stretching it to feature length. But what could have been a nihilistic mess becomes something alternately funny, shocking and moving, in a story about loss, addiction and love anchored by Green’s fearless performance and Kruger’s gorgeous, stylized direction. (****)
Magnolia
12 Hour Shift (USA)
12 Hour Shift was like a refreshing cool drink after watching some of the darker entries at Fantasia. We haven’t seen Angela Bettis (May) in a few years so she is a welcome and sensational presence as a night nurse in a Texas hospital running a side business in organ harvesting with her supervisor. Chloe Farnworth is equally great as her beyond-dumb cousin who delivers the organs to the gangsters running the black market, while David Arquette shows up as a dim bulb cop-killer who’s stuck in the ER.
Grisly mayhem and gooey twists ensue, and while it’s nothing you haven’t seen before, Bettis’ implacable calm keeps it all grounded and grimly hilarious. Writer/director Brea Grant allows herself a few self-indulgent moments, but overall this is a lot of fun. A faux-bombastic score heightens the humor. Watch for this on October 2 from Magnolia Pictures. (****)
Ben Hozie
PVT CHAT (USA)
From writer/director Ben Hozie (frontman of the band Bodega), this is a smart, erotic psychodrama about who we think people are and who they really are, against the backdrop of live sex chats and relationships via screen (the latter all too relevant in these shelter-in-place times). Peter Vack is great as Jack, who gambles online by day and spends his winnings at night on those aforementioned chats. His object of desire is cam girl Scarlet (Julia Fox, alluring in what was technically her first role before Uncut Gems), who seems to enjoy her work while tentatively exploring a deeper connection with Jack.
Hozie captures a pre-pandemic lower Manhattan vividly, and while the movie evokes an undercurrent of dread it never resorts to the predictable idea of making Jack a straight-up incel. The plot’s turns are clever and true to the characters, who gradually reveal their vulnerabilities and yearnings. It’s a small film, but it says a lot about love, loneliness and sex in the age of virtual life. (****)
Unstable Ground
Clapboard Jungle: Surviving the Independent Film Business (Canada)
Justin McConnell is a Canadian filmmaker who has directed two low-budget features but finds it as hard as ever to get a single one of his next potential projects (his “slate,” as he hopefully calls it) financed and produced. This documentary, which McConnell assembled over five years, charts the ups and downs of his quest while offering insight from dozens of artists — including Guillermo Del Toro, the late George A. Romero, Mick Garris (director, 1994’s The Stand), Larry Fessenden (director, Wendigo), John McNaughton (director, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer) and others — about the difficulties of independent filmmaking.
McConnell’s saga is a fascinating one and his resiliency in the face of defeat after defeat is at times inspiring. Some of the film plays like a checklist as he tackles various aspects of the business (to his credit, he even offers a clearly late-breaking section on the even more challenging environment facing women and filmmakers of color), but it’s still a worthy guide for anyone who dares to travel this path. (***½)
RLJE Films/Shudder
The Dark and the Wicked (USA)
Writer/director Bryan Bertino scared the living hell out of audiences back in 2008 with The Strangers, and while his pictures since then are few and far between and somewhat hard to see, his latest will benefit from a release through Shudder later this year.
In the meantime, we can tell you that Bertino has not lost a step when it comes to crafting utterly skin-freezing imagery and sequences. Siblings Louise (Marin Ireland) and Michael (Michael Abbot Jr.) return to their family’s rural farmhouse to help their mother as their comatose father enters his last days, despite their mother’s entreaties to stay away. Brother and sister learn all too soon that something has come for their family and will not stop.

Bertino works economically with both his direction and script, sketching in just enough about this family to create the necessary empathy and aided greatly by sterling work from Ireland and Abbot. The atmosphere is thick with dread from start to finish, and the images shocking and nightmarish. If The Dark and the Wicked leaves you with a few more questions than you’d like, that’s okay…this is still a genuinely unsettling watch. (***½)
Film Movement
Lapsis (USA)
Filmmaker Noah Hutton — who wrote, directed, edited and composed the score — sets his full-length feature debut in a sort of alternate universe that’s very similar to ours but sitting perhaps a few more minutes in the future. The excellent Dean Imperial (who has a James Gandolfini vibe about him) stars as delivery man Ray Tincelli, whose ailing brother’s mystery ailment forces Ray to join the gig economy. He becomes a “cabler,” one of a growing legion of freelancers who are literally laying cable across miles of rugged terrain for a quantum computing network that will revolutionize the financial markets.
Everything about the company and tech is enigmatic, as are many of the people that Ray meets along the way, and he discovers that the cabling “medallion” or permit he’s purchased may have previously belonged to an unsavory figure. Lapsis uses its subtle sci-fi trappings to tell a tale about real life, with workers fighting for whatever scraps they can get and wealthy oligarchs literally stringing them along. Lapsis is a slow burn, with a final scene that’s a bit of a head-scratcher, but Hutton has crafted a very distinct, pertinent vision. (***½)
Epic Pictures/Shudder
Lucky (USA)
Brea Grant also wrote and stars in Lucky, an allegory about a self-help author named May who is stalked — every night — by a masked killer who she keeps mortally injuring yet who keeps reappearing. Reality itself begins to fracture around her as she confronts events from her past and begins to realize what is happening to her and the other women in her life.
Lucky stretches a bit too much to sustain itself effectively over its relatively brief 80 minutes, but this is still a movie with vision and guts from director Natasha Kermani. Its central metaphor for the unending assaults faced by women every day is an unquestionably powerful one, driven home by an extended third act sequence in a parking garage that’s hard to shake. Shudder will stream it at a date TBA. (***)

Minor Premise (USA)
This intimate sci-fi thriller is steeped in neurophilosophy — and be warned, there’s a lot to keep up with here. Sathya Sridharan stars as Ethan, a brilliant young scientist who’s obsessed with living up to his father’s legacy while forging his own path. He creates a device that maps out memories and emotions in the brain, but his attempt to try it on himself shatters his psyche into 10 different emotional states, each surfacing for six minutes per hour.
Ethan and his ex-girlfriend (Paton Ashbrook), an ambitious researcher herself, try to piece his mind back together while avoiding the states of rage and psychosis that emerge once every cycle. The repetitive nature of the film and some stylistic choices by director and co-writer Eric Schultz drag its pacing down, but the two main performances are strong and the concept is fascinating and at times frightening. Minor Premise is ambitious and cerebral, if a little too dense, and still an intriguing trip. (***)
Global Screen
Sleep (Germany)
A woman (Sandra Huller) plagued with mysterious nightmares begins to piece together the visions she’s having, a puzzle that leads her to a secluded hotel in a small, desolate town in the German countryside. Once there, she has a nervous breakdown, landing her in the hospital and leaving her daughter (Gro Swantje Kohlhof) to discover the dark secrets hidden in the hotel and the town.
A feature debut from director Michael Venus, Sleep is assured in its vision and imagery even if it’s derivative of David Lynch and other practitioners of the macabre. The movie moves at a leisurely pace and Venus transitions seamlessly from reality to dream, but there is a sense of ambiguity at the end that leaves one both unsettled and vaguely unsatisfied. (***)
Hood River Entertainment
The Block Island Sound (USA)
The Block Island Sound, the new film from Kevin and Matthew McManus (Cobra Kai), would actually make a good pairing with The Dark and the Wicked in that they are both about families besieged by forces beyond their understanding. In this case, the Lynch family, who live on Block Island off the coast of Rhode Island, seem to be the target of an assault from above — an attack that is also doing macabre things to the local wildlife.
As with Bryan Bertino’s film, the family patriarch is the first to succumb, while his marine biologist daughter (Michaela McManus) and troubled son (Chris Sheffield) must contend with the fallout. The Block Island Sound has great cinematography, sound design and music, but is hampered by uneven acting and a somewhat undercooked script that shows its cards early and doesn’t really go anywhere from there. (**½)
Rivertop
Monster Seafood Wars (Japan)
A light, trifling satire of kaiju flicks, Monster Seafood Wars plays off the idea that the Japanese people are accustomed to having their cities leveled by giant monsters on a regular basis. Thus the latest siege by a giant octopus, squid and crab is business as usual, with restaurants even obtaining chunks of “monster meat” and serving it up in gourmet dishes as the latest culinary craze.
The film also pokes fun at youth culture, with the film’s three main scientists not just somewhere in their early 20s but sharing a romantic conflict as well. The movie’s kaiju costumes and green screen effects are deliberately cheesy and you’re meant to relax and have fun, but the movie labors hard to be truly funny and not just an oddity. (**½)
Trapdoor Pictures
The Mortuary Collection (USA)
“The world is not made of atoms, it is made of stories.” Too bad the stories in this anthology film don’t live up to those opening lines. Writer/director Ryan Spindell clearly loves the old Amicus portmanteau films, Creepshow, Tales from the Crypt and others, but his beautifully shot and handsomely designed tribute rarely comes off as more than a surface homage.
The framing device stars Clancy Brown (The Flash) in heavy prosthetics as a mortician who welcomes a cynical young woman (Caitlin Custer) into his funeral parlor and shares stories about some recent clients. There is some attempt at atmospherics and lots of gore, but the scares are non-existent and the stories just sort of sputter out without the punchy endings often associated with this subgenre. (**½)
Copperheart Entertainment
Come True (USA)
For Come True, writer/director/editor/cinematographer Anthony Scott Burns has come up with some truly eerie dream imagery, but the story he built around it is tedious and incoherent. Sarah (Julia Sarah Stone) desperately craves sleep and participates in a dream study that unleashes…what?
The movie never really fleshes out what is happening, while both its script and characters remain maddeningly vague. Throw in a sketchy love story between the very young Sarah and the lead scientist and it gets even creepier in the wrong ways. A misfire all around that sent us quickly into dreamland. (**)

Dear Children of Mary,
Some comforting words from Bishop Athanasius Schneider, it is so beautiful, I need not add anything to it.  It is long but is perfect for this great time of crisis.  have also included the prayers the good Bishop suggested for saying at home.Amar A Dios,Carole Duncan
“We Glory in Tribulations” – Living the Faith When Public Worship is Prohibited
Bishop Athanasius Schneider March 19, 2020 4 Comments
“We glory in tribulations” (Rom. 5:3)
Millions of Catholics in the so-called free Western world will, in the coming weeks or even months, and especially during Holy Week and Easter, the culmination of the entire liturgical year, be deprived of any public acts of worship due to both civic and ecclesiastical reaction to the outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19). The most painful and distressing of these is the deprivation of Holy Mass and sacramental Holy Communion.
The current atmosphere of an almost planetary panic is continuously fueled by the universally proclaimed “dogma” of the new coronavirus pandemic. The drastic and disproportionate security measures with the denial of fundamental human rights of freedom of movement, freedom of assembly, and freedom of opinion appear almost globally orchestrated along a precise plan. Thus, the entire human race becomes a kind of prisoner of a world “sanitary dictatorship,” which for its part also reveals itself as a political dictatorship.
An important side-effect of this new “sanitary dictatorship” that is spreading throughout the world is the growing and uncompromising ban on all forms of public worship. Beginning on March 16, 2020, the German government issued a ban on all forms of public religious gatherings for all religions. Such a drastic measure of strict prohibition of all forms of public worship was unimaginable even during the Third Reich.
Before these measures were taken in Germany, a governmentally ordered prohibition of any public worship was implemented in Italy and Rome, the heart of Catholicism and of Christianity. The current situation of the prohibition of public worship in Rome brings the Church back to the time of an analogous prohibition issued by the pagan Roman emperors in the first centuries.
Clerics who dare to celebrate Holy Mass in the presence of the faithful in such circumstances could be punished or put in prison. The world “sanitary dictatorship” has created a situation which breathes the air of the catacombs, of a persecuted Church, of an underground Church, especially in Rome. Pope Francis, who on March 15, with lonely and halting steps, walked through the deserted streets of Rome on his pilgrimage from the image of the “Salus populi Romani” in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore to the Miraculous Cross in the church of San Marcello, conveyed an apocalyptic image. It was reminiscent of the following description of the third part of the secret of Fatima (revealed on 13 July 1917): “The Holy Father passed through a big city half in ruins and half trembling with halting step, afflicted with pain and sorrow.”
How should Catholics react and behave in such a situation? We have to accept this situation from the hands of Divine Providence as a trial, which will bring us a greater spiritual benefit than if we had not experienced such a situation. One can understand this situation as a divine intervention in the current unprecedented crisis of the Church. God uses now the merciless world “sanitary dictatorship” to purify the Church, to awaken the responsible in the Church, and in first place the pope and the episcopate, from the illusion of a nice modern world, from the temptation to flirt with the world, from the immersion in temporal and earthly things. The powers of this world have now forcibly separated the faithful from their shepherds. The clergy is ordered by governments to celebrate liturgy without the people.
This current purifying divine intervention has the power to show all of us what is truly essential in the Church: the Eucharistic sacrifice of Christ with His Body and Blood and the eternal salvation of immortal souls. May those in the Church who are unexpectedly and suddenly deprived of what is central start to see and appreciate its value more deeply.
In spite of the painful situation of being deprived of Holy Mass and Holy Communion, Catholics should not yield to frustration or melancholy. They should accept this trial as an occasion of abundant graces, which Divine Providence has prepared for them. Many Catholics have now in some way the chance to experience the situation of the catacombs, of the underground Church. One can hope that such a situation will produce the new spiritual fruits of confessors of faith and of holiness.
This situation forces Catholic families to experience literally the meaning of a domestic church. In the absence of the possibility to assist at Holy Mass even on Sundays, Catholic parents should gather their families in their homes. They could assist in their homes at a Holy Mass broadcast on television or the internet, or if this is not possible, they should dedicate a holy hour of prayers to sanctify the Day of the Lord and to unite themselves spiritually with the Holy Masses celebrated by priests behind closed doors even in their towns or in their vicinity. Such a Sunday holy hour of a domestic church could be done for instance in a following way:
Prayer of the rosary, reading of the Sunday Gospel, Act of Contrition, act of Spiritual Communion, Litany, prayer for all who suffer and die, for all who are persecuted, prayer for the pope and the priests, prayer for the end of the current physical and spiritual epidemic. The Catholic family should also pray the Stations of the Cross on Fridays of Lent. Furthermore, on Sundays, parents could gather their children in the afternoon or in the evening to read to them from the Lives of the Saints, especially those stories drawn from times of persecution of the Church. I had the privilege to have lived such an experience in my childhood, and that gave me the foundation of the Catholic faith for my entire life.
Catholics who are now deprived of assisting at Holy Mass and receiving sacramentally Holy Communion, perhaps only for a short time of some weeks or months, may think about these times of persecution, where faithful for years couldn’t assist at Holy Mass and receive other sacraments, as was the case, for instance, during the communist persecution in many places of the Soviet Empire.
Let the following words of God strengthen all Catholics who are currently suffering from being deprived of the Holy Mass and Holy Communion:
“Do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.” (1 Peter 4: 12–13)
“The Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” (2 Cor. 1:3–4)
“That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishes, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honor and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ” (1 Peter 1:6–7).
In the time of a cruel persecution of the Church, St. Cyprian of Carthage (+258) gave the following edifying teaching on the value of patience:
“It is patience which firmly fortifies the foundations of our faith. It is this which lifts up on high the increase of our hope. It is this which directs our doing, that we may hold fast the way of Christ while we walk by His patience. How great is the Lord Jesus, and how great is His patience, that He who is adored in heaven is not yet avenged on earth! Let us, beloved brethren, consider His patience in our persecutions and sufferings; let us give an obedience full of expectation to His advent” (De patientia, 20; 24)
We want to pray with all our trust to the Mother of the Church, invoking the intercessory power of Her Immaculate Heart, that the current situation of being deprived of Holy Mass may bring abundant spiritual fruits for the true renewal of the Church after decades of the night of the persecution of true Catholics, clergy, and faithful that has happened inside the Church. Let us hear the following inspiring words of St. Cyprian:
“If the cause of disaster is recognized, there is at once found a remedy for the wound. The Lord has desired His family to be proved; and because a long peace had corrupted the discipline that had been divinely delivered to us, the heavenly rebuke has aroused our faith, which was giving way, and I had almost said slumbering; and although we deserved more for our sins, yet the most merciful Lord has so moderated all things, that all which has happened has rather seemed a trial than a persecution.” (De lapsis, 5)
God grant that this short trial of the deprivation of public worship and Holy Mass instill in the heart of the pope and the bishops a new apostolic zeal for the perennial spiritual treasures, which were divinely entrusted to them — i.e., the zeal for the glory and honor of God, for the uniqueness of Jesus Christ and His redeeming sacrifice, for the centrality of the Eucharist and its sacred and sublime manner of celebration, for the greatest glory of the Eucharistic Body of Christ, the zeal for the salvation of the immortal souls, for a chaste and apostolic-minded clergy. May we listen to the following encouraging words of St. Cyprian:
“Praises must be given to God, and His benefits and gifts must be celebrated with giving of thanks, although even in the time of persecution our voice has not ceased to give thanks. For not even an enemy has so much power as to prevent us, who love the Lord with our whole heart, and life, and strength, from declaring His blessings and praises always and everywhere with glory. The day earnestly desired, by the prayers of all has come; and after the dreadful and loathsome darkness of a long night, the world has shone forth irradiated by the light of the Lord.” (De lapsis, 1)
March 19, 2020
+ Athanasius Schneider, auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Saint Mary in Astana
A sample of prayers for the Sunday domestic holy hour
The Perfect Act of Contrition:
“Oh my God! I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell; But most of all because I have offended Thee, My God, Who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, To confess my sins, to do penance, And to amend my life. Amen.”
(Baltimore Catechism)
Prayer for making a Spiritual Communion:
“At Thy feet, O my Jesus, I prostrate myself, and I offer Thee the repentance of my contrite heart, which is humbled in its nothingness and in Thy holy presence. I adore Thee in the Sacrament of Thy love, the ineffable Eucharist. I desire to receive Thee into the poor dwelling that my heart offers Thee. While waiting for the happiness of sacramental Communion, I wish to possess Thee in spirit. Come to me, O my Jesus, since I, for my part, am coming to Thee! May thy love embrace my whole being in life and in death. I believe in Thee, I hope in Thee, I love Thee. Amen”
Prayers of the Angel of Fatima:
“My God, I believe, I adore, I trust, and I love Thee! I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not trust and do not love Thee. Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, I adore Thee profoundly. I offer Thee the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges, and indifference by which He is offended. And through the infinite merit of His Most Sacred Heart, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg of Thee the conversion of poor sinners. Amen.”
The Universal Prayer (attributed to Pope Clement XI)
Lord, I believe in you: increase my faith. I trust in you: strengthen my trust. I love you: let me love you more and more. I am sorry for my sins: deepen my sorrow. I worship you as my first beginning, I long for you as my last end, I praise you as my constant helper, and call on you as my loving protector.
Guide me by your wisdom, correct me with your justice, comfort me with your mercy, protect me with your power. I offer you, Lord, my thoughts: to be fixed on you; my words: to have you for their theme; my actions: to reflect my love for you; my sufferings: to be endured for your greater glory. I want to do what you ask of me: In the way you ask, for as long as you ask, because you ask it. Lord, enlighten my understanding, strengthen my will, purify my heart, and make me holy. Help me to repent of my past sins and to resist temptation in the future. Help me to rise above my human weaknesses and to grow stronger as a Christian.
Let me love you, my Lord and my God, and see myself as I really am: a pilgrim in this world, a Christian called to respect and love all whose lives I touch, those under my authority, my friends and my enemies. Help me to conquer anger with gentleness, greed by generosity, apathy by fervor. Help me to forget myself and reach out toward others. Make me prudent in planning, courageous in taking risks. Make me patient in suffering, unassuming in prosperity.
Keep me, Lord, attentive at prayer, temperate in food and drink, diligent in my work, firm in my good intentions. Let my conscience be clear, my conduct without fault, my speech blameless, my life well-ordered. Put me on guard against my human weaknesses. Let me cherish your love for me,
Keep your law, and come at last to your salvation. Teach me to realize that this world is passing, that my true future is the happiness of heaven, that life on earth is short, and the life to come eternal. Help me to prepare for death with a proper fear of judgment, but a greater trust in your goodness. Lead me safely through death to the endless joy of heaven. Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Hymn and prayer to Our Lady, the star of heaven
Stella caeli exstirpávit,
quae lactávit Dóminum
Mortis pestem quam plántavit
Primus parens hóminum.
Ipsa Stella nunc dignétur
sídera compéscere,
Quorum bella plebem caedunt
Dirae mortis úlcere.
O piíssima stella maris,
A peste succúrre nobis.
Audi nos, Dómina,
nam Fílius tuus nihil negans te honórat.
Salva nos Jesu, pro quibus Virgo Mater te orat!
℣ In omni tribulatióne et angústia nostra.
℞ Succúrre nobis, piíssima Virgo Maria.
Oremus: Deus misericordiae, Deus pietatis, Deus indulgentiae, qui misertus es super afflictione Populi tui, et dixisti Angelo percutienti Populum tuum: contine manum tuam ob amorem illius Stellae gloriosae, cujus ubera pretiosa contra venenum nostrorum delictorum quam dulciter suxisti: praesta auxilium gratiae tuae, ab omni peste, et improvisa morte secure liberemur, et a totius perditionis incursu misericorditer liberemur.
Per te Jesu Christi Rex Gloria, Salvator Mundi: Qui vivis, et regnas in secula seculorum. Amen
The Star of heaven, who breastfed the Lord, extirpated the plague planted by the first parent of men.
This star may now deign to restrain the stars who with their wars kill the people with the mortal cruel ulcer.
O most pious star of the sea, deliver us from the plague. Hear us, o Lady, for your Son, who denies nothing to you, honors you. O Jesus, save us, for whom your Virgin Mother prays!
1.                  In all our tribulations and anguishes,
2.                  Succour us, o most pious Virgin Mary.
Let us pray. God of mercy, God of love, God of forgiveness, you have compassion over the affliction of your people and you said to the Angel who was striking your people: Stay your hand out of love of that glorious Star, at whose precious breasts you sweetly sucked to remedy the poison of our trespasses. Grant the help of your grace and we shall be surely and mercifully delivered from any plague, of unprepared death and of any perditious attack. Through you, Jesus Christ, the King of Glory, the Savior of the world, who lives and reigns forever. Amen.

Kind Regards,
Patricia Murray

Too late from work to go into the kitchen to fix dinner?  Too tired to explore what to put on the menu day in and out?  Too tardy to pick up groceries, clean and chop, grate and grind, blend and cook only to find that your dish was burnt or salty or bland?
If your answer is a “Yes” to any of these questions, then it’s about time to check out UG Dabbalicious’, a dabba service.  True to its name Dabbalicious offers dabbas that are delicious.  What better a combo than this one!
UG Dabbalicious (UGD) has been launched by Dr. Mithila Desai, a clinical psychologist and Mr. Utpal Gandhi, a practising interior designer.  Both are self-confessed foodaholics who put their passion for food to the test in the form of UGD.  They have aspired to give their venture a ‘homemade‘ touch in exploiting the nuances of mommy’s cooking.    So good is this unique selling point of packing in homemade food, that they are all set to knock the standard dabbawallas off their perch.
Dr Mithila Desai
It is no economical mission to pack in frozen foods, meat, produce,  pay cooks wages, bargain for accessories, seal deals on kitchen gadgets, employ maids for cutting, slicing and chopping.  The shortest way to rid yourself of all the above and more would be to ‘order a dabba‘ right at your doorstep.  In the form of Dabbalicious dabbas of course.  The dabbas come in ‘tray‘ forms for delivery to nearby locations and in the form of ‘vertical disposable plastic containers‘ for delivery to somewhat distant locations in South Mumbai or even those about 4 km away.
  “Tray” Dabba Meal
As is characteristic of me, I prefer to break up a story in point form to make it easier to skim through and cause a lasting impression.  So here are 8 ways by which UGD creates its signature dabbas.   One that prides itself on its Fresh ingredients, Hygienic food and Quality of the highest order.
TASTY MEALS
Personally speaking, I tend to shy away from dabba meals as most franchises are quite often profit-oriented with little empathy towards its customers.  In commercial kitchens, gravies are thickened and ingredients not often fresh.  However, UGD is anything but.  I sampled some of its vegetarian options which are what I typically opt for when trying out new food.  It takes a Special Touch to make vegetables delicious, no mean task this.  Their dabba only goes to prove this fact.
  Cauliflower-stuffed Chillies
The first trial dabba emerged with baingan ka bharta, bhindi-aloo, dal makhani, chawal, roti and ravoli.  Ravoli is made from ‘Lapsi’, ‘Rava’, ‘Gud’ and Dry Fruits.  Am sure there’s something that good food does to make you disregard loyalty.  So it was in a jiffy that I crammed in all its contents with little thought about leaving some for my better half.  I ate up everything but the tray with no qualms of marital devotion.
Vegetarian Premium Dabba Meal
2. ORGANIC INGREDIENTS = HEALTHY DABBA
The finest feature of UGD lies in its use of Organic ingredients in its meals. While almost every other service or eatery attempts to cut corners, UGD strives to acquire organic ingredients.  A “fresh” challenge in the present day when the increase in GST has made prices of ingredients grow steeper.
One of its chief organic ingredients is Coconut Milk, similar to that of Thai gravies.  Their curries are cooked in various combinations of Garlic & Coconut Milk OR Ginger & Coconut Milk.  They are subsequently tempered with dry ground spices and curry leaves.  Get the whiff?  Oh quite, even from afar.
Contrary to what you may have believe/d, coconut is now gaining considerable thrust in its nutritional advantages.  The famous dietician-cum-author, Rujuta Diwekar, adds credence to the coconut theory.  In fact, she discredits the hypothesis connecting coconut to poor health benefits.  You may have long believed in coconut spiking up cholesterol levels but she assures that natural oils from coconut isn’t unhealthy.   If you are judicious in using less refined oil and more coconut, the distribution is then evened.
Fresh coconut used in curries
Jaggery is the second most ingredient employed in most of Dabbalicious‘ dishes.  It offers a good substitute for sugar without adding calories attributed to sugar intake.  It is extracted from cane and palm without the chemicals used to refine white sugar.  Apart from this, I simply love brown jaggery for its brown sugary taste.  Reminds me of black treacle and caramel.
If organic isn’t enough, Dabbalicious offers Diet Meals as well.  The choice is yours, to select a menu ranging from grilled/baked/sauteed to steamed.  Even more, it promises High Protein, low-Carb and Gluten-free meals.  Want to go on a healthy green spree, then salads are the way to go.  Not lagging far behind are their Multi-grain Rotis, Brown Rice, Grilled Chicken, Paneer, Tofu and Vegetables.  Now, who says dabbas are boring?
3. TRADITIONAL & AUTHENTIC
  Sweet n Spicy semi-boiled Aloo
Do you have memories of granny’s lip-smacking age-old recipes?  If you do, well you must have been one happy grandchild.  If you didn’t pack in school lunches as a child, I sympathise with you.  In all probability, you may have dipped into fellow students’ dabbas if you didn’t carry your own ‘ghar kha khaana‘.
If you don’t have any memories for whatever reasons, Dabbalicious will help you in a total recall of your childhood school lunches packed by aai or aaji.
Raw Kela, garnished with grated Coconut
One such granny’s dish, a non-vegetarian one, is their quintessential prawn curry.  Combined well with raw mangoes when in season.   When not, they supplement it with ‘amboshi‘ (dried aam) which is bagged from local stores.  In fact, they make it a point to cook their meals with Seasonal Ingredients most of the time.
  Prawn Curry with Raw Mangoes
Have you heard of pineapple used in curries?  I bet you haven’t.  Nor have I, until I bumped into Dabbalicious that is.  Is it a fruity curry or a curried fruit?  Well, fresh pineapple lends a bit of both, fruity sweetness and lemony sour.  A toss of tamarind and jaggery only heightens this taste of sweet and sour.  Bet you can’t wait until you try this one.
Pineapple Curry
Their preparation style is largely influenced by Maharastrian cooking.  Hence the use of val in most of their dishes which kind of pair well with rotis or rice.
Most coastal cuisines combine veggies with prawns, the common vegetables being radish, pumpkin and turnip.  The latter falls among their signature dishes.
As far as vegetable preparations go, cauliflower and cabbage is their hot selling vegetable combination.
As far as chicken dishes go, red gravies are less common because UGD prefers to avoid the use of heavy spices as they aren’t known to be associated with good health.  Simple spices like pepper and cinnamon are more frequently used.  One of their popular dishes applies a Goan recipe of ginger-cinnamon chicken.  This dish is a semi-thick gravy into which chicken is rolled.  Tempered with the right amount of heat, ginger, red chillies, cinnamon and coriander this can be a formidable dish.
  Gawti Kombdi Masala
Popular with most Marathi varieties of chicken preparation, coconut is ground with hara kothmir and sukha masalas.  Note that these aren’t similar to the much exploited Malvani cooking style which is confused with Maharashtrian.  Many a time commercial units use masalas in a manner that tends to overpower the dish.
As far as their fish dishes go, they prefer to stick with the likes of rawas, surmai, bombil and kolambi curries.  Fried fish is an otherwise hot selling item but tastes best when served hot.  It hasn’t  been introduced yet owing to its unviability of staying hot for long in a dabba.
4. NO ADDED FLAVOURS OR PRESERVATIVES
If there is one concern about ‘outside’ food, it’s about the thickening agents that go into its cooking.  Most restaurants are known to use artificial thickening agents like corn flour, kaju paste, cheese and butter in their cuisine.  So what does Dabbalicious use to thicken their gravies, you may ask?  Chickpea flour!  Am pre-empting your next question, that is if chickpea flour is tasty or not?  No, it isn’t merely tasty, it’s yummy!  Nothing like gorging on food that’s ‘natural‘ly yummy’licious’ 🙂
That there are no added Colours or Flavours or Preservatives makes me sigh in relief and would make you too.  Was never one for garishly orange coloured chicken or scarlet red gravies.  Besides, I see no reason to preserve food for long unless they’re pickles. Hence preservatives have personally never been a hot idea.  To not use preservatives is yet another tick mark in UGD’s favour.
Am sure most of you would prefer to use freshly ground spices in your meals over the commercial packs available at stores.  If you do, you have no cause for concern as Dabbalicious does exactly that – use homemade spices freshly ground from raw material personally overseen by its makers.
5.  PERSONAL TOUCH
Jowar Bhakri
In her opinion, Dr Desai, a clinical psychologist opines that food affects your mood and emotional makeup.  She contends with the stereotype that women hold the best place in the kitchen as they have long since been associated with it.  She, however,  agrees that many chefs are men but despite this fact, most Indian households are known to pride themselves on having women manage the kitchen.  So it is but natural to have a wife or mother or grandmother oversee the food quarter.  The lady of the house she is called.
Left: Sunita, Centre: Archana, Right: Anu
This is precisely why Dabbalicious employs an ‘all women’ staff to prepare their dabba meals.  There’s a personal touch which women tend to attach to cooking.  Despite the differences in food preferences, the women are relied upon to being mindful of keeping both genders happy.  There is a separation of duties in their kitchens, each to her own area.  For instance, Sunita-bai bakes the chapatis – hundreds in a day!  Anu-bai grinds the masalas and chops the ingredients, Archana-bai packs the dabbas and “delivers the goods“.
6. WHAT’S ON THE MENU
Packed Dabba Meal
To cater to a large customer base they have classified their menu into “Veg“, “Basic Non-Veg” and “A La Carte“.  A further grouping puts the menu into “day wise” menus as these.  Thankfully, the menus are not tediously the same and change daily for a fortnight.
        Dabbalicious Menu
What completes the meals are their rotis/puris, plain/stuffed parathas, rice/pulav, house salads and desserts.  Add some biryanis too, prepared with egg, prawn/chicken/mutton.
  7. DIVIDE AND COOK | DIFFERENT KITCHENS
With vegetarians and non-vegetarians living side by side in as populated a city as Mumbai, there are concerns of how and where the meals are cooked.  Are there separate kitchens to cater to herbivores vs carnivores cooking methods?  The answer is Yes.  A partition divides the vegetarian kitchen from the non-vegetarian.  Even more, the cooking utensils are separated into ‘red’ ones for ‘non-veg’ and ‘green’ for veg.
They have even moved their kitchen area to Goregaon to cater to this separatist peculiarity of cooking veg meals in a veg kitchen only.
8. 3 Steps to Deliver the Goods
At present Dabbalicious is tied up with Mumbai’s Dabbawallas to deliver their dabbas.   Soon enough they plan to tie up with Swiggy, Urban Clap and similar delivery channels to extend its reach in the city.
Within Goregaon itself where its kitchens are based, the delivery cost is zero as it employs its own delivery boys to “deliver the goods“.   Use the 3 above steps to get closer to a great meal!
So, will you try to check WHAT’S IN YOUR DABBA today?
