Hot take incoming but Makoto is one of the characters where everybody focuses on only one of his crimes, which is arguably actually the most justified out of all his actions, while ignoring pretty much. Everything else.
Like sorry but I don't think turning people into food was That Bad considering homunculi need human meat in order to live, they literally die if they don't eat it - it's either A. no humans get killed, and in turn all of Kanai Ward dies, or B. humans die and get turned into meatbuns, and Kanai Ward gets to exist. You could argue that the defective homunculi weren't really supposed to exist anyway but like, they do now so what. Makoto is also a homunculus, of course he probably sympathizes more with the other homunculi instead of the humans (that put them there in the first place) of course he's gonna choose KW over approx. a million humans.
If that was me in that situation I'll do the same thing fuck them bun filling lmao sorry I'm not saying it would be the best choice but it's one literally most people would choose anyway because like. What can you do, it sucks, moving on.
Substitutes for human flesh are possible to create (thank you ramen guy) but it'd require him to seek help from others which would require him to tell them the truth which fuck no. Like in that regard I believe he should be allowed to kill whoever he wants actually!
What actually makes me go 🤨 about him is everything else he's doing. Or not doing - aside from providing food and rain clouds, aka only a portion the bare necessities, he's doing absolutely nothing for Kanai Ward, especially Dohya District. He lives in the most expensive looking penthouse I ever laid my eyes upon, there is so much he could do with all of his billions, like, I don't know, at least unflood the Dohya District do you remember the Dohya District it appeared once in chapter 3 I believe.
Also your city has a poverty crisis the population's like 10% rich bitch working for ✨Amaterasu✨ 90% i live in a sewer i have like 8 shien. Please stop saying you love KW like every othet sentence and actually do something I'm begging you I'm poking you with a stick right now.
Say what you want about Yomi but he was so real for telling Makoto he's not doing shit, only ever instance in rc where the guy is like.... somewhat correct. I was about to say something else but I stopped myself because I have a healthy amount of Fear.
Apparently Makoto's love for all homunculi doesn't extend to Kurumi though, a teenage girl, after he just dumps her along with Yuma in the restricted area for no reason whatsoever, endangering her severely. He also risked her finding out she was eating human flesh for three years straight, the only reason she didn't go into the freezer was because Yuma was there to tell her there was nothing there. There was no reason for Makoto to drag her along to be the audience to his epic showdown with his DNA donor.
I'm not mad at him for that though, that was so fucking hilarious, the fuck?? What is wrong with him <3333
Since I know somebody is going to say that Yomi existing severely limits what Makoto can actually do, which is fair to some extent, but like... Was Yomi holding a gun to his head and telling him he's gonna execute the hostages if he tries to unflood Dohya? Was he? Yomi controls the peacekeepers, he doesn't control where Amaterasu money gets donated. Yomi (and by extension, the peacekeepers - Yomi is, as I see it, the personification of everything wrong with the Amaterasu Corporation cops peacekeepers anyway) can be blamed for a large portion of everything wrong with Kanai Ward, but not the entirety of it; and Makoto can't be, either. Blaming everything on Yomi is not only just wrong, but also the most boring answer possible.
Speaking of -- Makoto didn't even care about all the abuse of power Yomi was commiting the entire time. According to him, "If all Yomi did was throw his weight around, that would have been fine, but [forgot the exact phrasing, but he says him trying to leak homunculus information was where he had to step in]", so you can't even give him points for being a Yomi hater! Sad. Anyway here's how makoyomi worsties can still win
Do I dislike Makoto? No not really. I don't really care about him as much as other people tend to, but he's fun when you let him be his silly (ominous) self. The atrocities are a part of him and I decided they're funny. Actually wait I changed my mind I love him now.

Yuma clearly remembered the significance that the Book of Death and Shinigami personally had to him in some way. He could've entrusted it to Makoto, who lives in and has access to the most secure places in Kanai Ward, and already had a comfortable knowledge about the book even without any memory of the Mystery Labyrinth.
He could've given it to Vivia, who is not only an incredibly capable detective and a book enthusiast who would probably store it safely, but also his insane forte giving him the ability to actually see Shinigami and remember the Mystery Labyrinth without a pact makes him one of the most knowledgeable people about the Book of Death probably ever. On top of that, he's definitely way too lazy and unmotivated to abuse it in any way.
Tumblr media
But he gave it to Kurumi. Someone who is (homunculus status notwithstanding) essentially an average girl who probably knows nothing about the book unless on the off-chance that Vivia or Makoto filled her in. There's really no pragmatic reason to give it to her.
Tumblr media
Yuma gave it to her, because it's his roundabout way of saying that she's where he intends to return to.
Or maybe even, he anticipated that she's the type of person who could find her way to him, since the condition he had set for coming back is an inherently impossible task. In a way, isn't that entrusting another person with something that you wouldn't be able to do on your own?

I'm so sorry, I need to go into Lore...
Tumblr media
So... there isn't much power scaling in lore right. Venti says of himself he's the weakest Archon and that's kind of it (I think he's lying btw, but that's beside the point). I think Nahida and Rukkhadevata don't have any show cases of their raw power/strength, I think creating the Rain Forest is Rukkhadevata's doing. We don't yet have much info on Egeria and Furina. Makoto wasn't particularly powerful but a great strategist and good with her people, Makoto was the brains, and Ei the brawns. Ei's biggest achievement probably is killing Orobashi and cutting Yashiori Island up in the process. I assume she's slain a few other gods too during the Archon war, but I thinkkkk, there has been no explicit mention of it. But perhaps she's quite near the top. Murata in Natlan... I could imagine they might come out on top, because sheer force/power is a pyro thing. We don't really know anything about the Tsaritsa as far as I know.
And then there's Morax...
terraformed Guyun Stone Forest by hurling mountains at other gods
terraformed/raised Mt. Tianheng after Liyue was flooded so his people would be safe
terraformed Jeuyun Karst
one shot some random god that abused the fuck out of Xiao
ruthlessly killed numerous other gods (confirmed in lore)
dug out some random geo dragon, giving him sight like it's no big deal
creates life that somehow can flattens mountains (mind you how special the art of khemia seems to be for creating life, looking at you albedo who's oh so powerful for creating crystal flies no shade I love you bby)
was still more than confident to take on Osial, should Liyue not have been able to protect itself
BUT, ya know what had him struggle?
Azhdaha. Zhongli does state that he had a hard time confronting the eroded Azhdaha, "let alone seal him away" (Zhongli's own words). He called 3 other Adepti to help and they still struggled, so in the end Azhdaha's benevolence won, remembered the contract he had with Morax and he let himself get sealed away willingly. And see, the thing is; while Azhdaha has quite a few titles that mighttttt imply that he is the Geo Dragon Sovereign - Like, he's refered to as "Sealed King of the Geo Dragons", "Dragon King", "Lord of Vishaps", which is in line with how the Hydro Dragon is refered to, as well as the other sovereigns. (Zhongli does refer to him as THE Earth Dragon) - there's no confirmation yet. But you could probably make it a case that he's at the very least related, or part of the same race as the Sovereigns.
WHICH GIVES YOU TWO OPTIONS,
If you think he's the Geo Dragon, then - Geo Dragon without his full draconic Authority still overpowers an insanely powerful god + Gnosis + 3 Adepti.
Or
He's "just" some minor Geo Dragon (Possibly similar'ish to Dvalin), that still overpowers a god + Gnosis + 3 Adepti, which should speak volume about the sheer power of a Sovereign that has their full power.
... So like, I don't doubt that if Neuvillette gets his full power back by the end of 4.2's Archon quest, he's very much dwarfing Zhongli and would be, at least among the currently known/playable characters, the most powerful one.

If it's not too much trouble, do you have headcanons for Kotoko/Monaka? I like to imagine post-canon they work out their issues with each other and get to a much healthier place, like, when they're teenagers. I related a lot to Kokoto's toxic relationship with Monaka, I definitely had relationships like that when I was in elementary school too. It's kind of nice to imagine a world where - whether romantically or platonically - they work out their issues and work out, even if that might not be exactly realistic, aha...
Oh MAN do I have post-canon Warriors of Hope headcanons. I really do love imagining these kids and the lives they lead when they come of age.
I try not to use read mores, but this one got way longer than the usual headcanon posts, and it very much is less "Kotoko/Monaca headcanons" and more "elaborate set-up for how Kotoko and Monaca feel about their crimes as teenagers." So more under the cut I guess!
Firstly, some setup. I love adoptive family relationships, and especially mother/child adoptive relationships. So of course I love daydreaming about Aoi "Bleeding Heart" Asahina adopting Kotoko, and it becoming a Kyoko (or Miaya!)/Hina-parenting-Kotoko, friends-to-moms slowburn. SOMEONE'S adopting these children, and it's not Komaru "I Just Spent A Full Year In Solitary Isolation (:" or the "We Taser Ourselves To Decide Whether The Serial Killer Fronts (:" Fukawas. Hina's upbeat, she keeps it light, and unlike Makoto "Spotless" Naegi, she understands the guilt of attempting/committing mass murder. Kyoko isn't quite any of that but deep in my heart. Through The Power Of Love And Elaborate Metaphors About Her Relationship To Her Father
And I mean. I'm going to be honest. Monaca's, like, 10. She spends three days in space before she goes 1. Wow this sucks 2. I did not in fact prepare enough materials to live like this indefinitely. I'm like 10. I packed enough for about 13 hours and thought I was good Forever. I need more marshmallows.
So it takes Monaca all of half a week to admit her failures and crash land somewhere on earth. The island with the Remnants? Misaki and Takumi? In-universe versions of the V3 students as adults? Personally I'm a fan of Yasuhiro and Kanon adopting her in the world's absolute weirdest fantasy. What matters is SOMEONE finds her. And we get Mod Loves Sappy Adoptive Relationships V2: Now With The Green One.
Because listen. Listen. These are kids. They have committed heinous, unforgivable crimes of extreme ethical concern, and they are also ten years old. Their only frame of ethical reference is a manipulator and abuser so good at what she does that she ended the world. People generally remember this with the other Warriors, but they almost always set it aside for Monaca, so I want to be clear: Monaca Towa is redeemable. Because she was 10 years old, and the moment she was out from under the thumb of the people who taught her how to do these cruel and unusual things, her first plan was Run Away To Space To Escape The Things That Have Happened Here. They're children.
THAT MEANS A LOT OF GUILT. NO ONE HAS EVER NOT BECOME A PUDDLE OF REGRET ABOUT SOMETHING THEY DID IN MIDDLE SCHOOL.
In general, I actually think Kotoko struggles with guilt the least amongst the Warriors. Firstly, I think having a parent who understands and can help her come to grips with what she's done from a very personal place really helps her work through it. But I also think Kotoko is low-empathy in general. I think eventually, she comes to understand intellectually what she's done wrong, but I don't think she ever struggles with the idea that she shouldn't have done it. I think she would be very practical about the circumstances that she was in, and in her mind, well. What else was she supposed to do? She'd been abused all her life. She was up against Junko Enoshima. Obviously what she did was wrong, but any other kid in that situation would've, in Kotoko's mind, done the same.
On the other hand, I believe Monaca would get hit with guilt very intensely once she finally processed everything she'd been through at high-school age, but that she would absolutely keep that under wraps and act as though it was meaningless to her.
Monaca is, in my opinion, a compulsive liar. You can see that in a lot of canonical ways, but I choose to extend it a bit to headcanons - it's not that she Doesn't need a wheelchair, it's that she has days when she needs it and days when she doesn't, and pretending she never needed it at all gives people a huge shock. She didn't plan to not kill herself with the rest of the Warriors as a prank; she really planned to do it, but people look at her when she says that. It's a defensive mechanism, and a method of feeling in control. At least I can choose for them to hate me by lying and being terrible, instead of being hated when I haven't done anything.
So I think, when she is finally faced with the enormity of what she has done, Monaca does what her first instinct is always to do: runs away from it and lies herself into culpability. Of course I killed all those terrible adults, and now that I'm almost their age, I'll just die instead of becoming one of them! That sort of thing. I think she traps herself into her own persona, no matter how hard she tries to improve, because Monaca is a child who internalizes until she breaks.
So when Kotoko and Monaca meet coincidentally at high-school age. Ho boy. Kotoko who still sort-of blames Monaca who blames herself, and neither of them completely aware of how to comfort a person or how to hate a person in a way that isn't lethal...oh the GROWTH. The Strawberry Wine by Deana Carter of it all

Round 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut
Shiv Roy
She's honestly kind of a canonical victim of yaoi almost. She and her husband Tom have a loveless marriage but never end up getting divorced. Tom has a weird psychosexual obsession with Shiv's cousin Greg and at one point literally compares them all to the time Emperor Nero pushed his wife down the stairs and then castrated and married a slave boy named Sporus (Tom is unwell). Anyway the show just ended and long story short Tom is now CEO of Shiv's family's evil company and she is reduced to being his pregnant wife (which is the result of her voting not to authorize either of her brothers as CEO in order to save them from themselves) and Tom made another weird comment about literally owning Greg. And now people who ship Tom and Greg are like "omg it's canon we won" but I don't. Think that they did. Sorry I'm rambling it was just a really good finale idek if this counts but
I will be honest I'm not really tuned into the tomgreg fandom, but tons of people wanted tom to leave shiv and get with greg and tons of people thought shiv was the devil incarnate and refused to see any nuance in her character and I don't think those two things are a coincidence.
She gets a lot of hate from fans, largely just for being a woman who reacts in a non pretty way to abuse and for doing the exact same shitty stuff her brothers do. But also a large part of the hate she gets comes from the people who ship her husband with her cousin. To the point where people claim she's abusing her husband who views her as an accessory, a baby factory, and a ticket to money. Don't get me wrong, their relationship is incredibly toxic and unhealthy, but it is so on both of their parts. But Shiv's the only one who gets criticized for it
Kyoko Kirigiri
The anime series Danganronpa 3's ending somewhat implied she and Makoto are a couple but the fandom likes to ship Makoto with Byakuya much more. The same anime series also saw a lot of hatred against her character and well, it was already there because people also complain about how she acted in the original Danganronpa Trigger Happy Havoc game as well, unfairly in my opinion. She's really cool and really smart and just isn't the quickest to trust people, which makes sense considering she's in fucking death games. Her deduction skills and strategy played a big part in saving the people who did make it out BOTH times she was in killing games and in one of those cases she was even willing to potentially sacrifice herself for it. I'll stop now but she is my most mistreated fave
arguably the most important character in the game but gets tossed aside a lot because of the two male leads byakuya and the main guy (dont even remember his name ngl) and she is so pretty and cool and smart and i love her so yeah <3

Toko already had a bad inferiority complex and trust issues. Aside from the FTE in DR1 which are optional you kinda notice that she’s not very close with the other DR1 cast even after becoming survivors. Seriously look at the DRwiki for her relationship with the others and compare it to Komaru the disparity is crazy.
Makoto she can open up to because of her FTE but that’s optional and in fact Makoto has more interactions with Syo than Toko.
She does not have much interactions with Kyoko which yeah now that I think about it she’s pretty distant from Kyoko I can’t remember if they ever talked to each other.
Yasuhiro she’s overall ambivalent mostly calling him an idiot (deserved most of the time). I’m pretty sure Hiro mostly avoids cause he’s afraid of Syo.
Aoi yeah her and Syo loves staring at Aoi body and making suggestive quips (We know what you are Toko) but aside from that she only tried to fight Asahina when Hina understandably slapped Togami. She is considerate of Hina in regards to telling her the news about what happened to Yuta.
Togami, well the less said about him the better. Literally the first person she decided to trust and he immediately outs her D.I.D and tries to pin the murder on her just for fun. Everything after that is a one-sided crush that’s so uncomfortable and it’s not even funny. He’s just rude to her throughout the game and this does not even improve in any games after when he gets a little nicer.
yeah this is why it miffs me a bit when people call the thh survivors "found family" because... its pretty obvious that Toko (and by extension,Syo) is very much outcast. Like I can understand why the other survivors would not want to be friends with Toko but it's insane that it seems like no one really stood up for her when she's being very obviously mistreated by the future foundation. Again I can understand why the future foundation wouldn't want someone with a double digit body count of perceived innocent people as an official member, but refusing to provide her with clean clothes, forcing her to harm herself so they can use her mental disorder as a tool (not to mention Syo is an entire person they are treating as just a weapon) is straight-up abusive. This is why I headcanon that post-udg Toko and Komaru refuse to officially join the future foundation, though obviously they still have to work with them.
Komaru is genuinely so sweet and lovely to Toko so it bothers me so much when people try to say one is "abusing" the other. I've seen anti-Tokomaru Toga//fuka shippers claiming that Komaru is abusive to Toko for... pointing out that she smells bad?? understandably calling Toko out when she acts like a dick?? which is wild cause. look what your man does. And of course there are the people who think that Toko is the Greatest Evil and will never change. it's just insane to me that people want to take away the only friend Toko has ever had.

Last night on P5T, we wear some excellent costumes, throw some people off buildings, have some alcohol, and actually take baby steps towards acknowledging that this is, in fact, a sequel!
To help out Yuki while we’re trapped in this world, we’re going to storm a garrison to hack into one of the banks of security cameras that keep an eye on everything in the city. They’re also going to free all the people trapped in that dungeon. But, because of all the cameras, they can’t just go out and walk through the city, so it’s time for disguises! And everyone looks great in their kimonos and guard uniforms! They even let Ann wear the guard uniform because she thinks that would be cool.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toshiro is also being forced to acknowledge that what the Phantom Thieves were doing back in their world parallels how they just overthrew Marie in the previous Kingdom. So he really can’t condemn the kids for their actions.
Tumblr media
One of the sidequests that we get at this point is from Yusuke. We did a tutorial for followup attacks, where you kick people off the roof and a teammate waiting below can shoot at them. And now Yusuke is very eager to get a better look at people mid-fall. So… Off we go, apparently.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love Yusuke so much.
So off to the garrison in disguise it is. The Thieves take a bunch of sake and get the guards to throw a banquet and get drunk while Toshiro, Futaba, Morgana, and Yuki break in and hack the cameras. It’s going great until the guards start being rude to Makoto and some of the little hat guys. She is two seconds from breaking character as a geisha and beating the shit out of them, but Akira, knowing that some of the sake bottles they brought had water in them, has a fantastic idea:
Tumblr media
I’ve never been so happy to see a dialogue option. XDDDD We still have to fight eventually, but not before Makoto drinks a guard under the table. And Yusuke looks so cool in his outfit.
Tumblr media
Futaba and crew free the prisoners, she broadcasts the conditions in the labor camps to the oblivious citizens, and we get the hell out of dodge. When we get back outside, we run into Lord Yoshiki, who is giving off some major Yaldabaoth vibes.
Tumblr media
And he comes with a dramatic revelation!
Tumblr media
I don’t know why I’m surprised. Like, of course the other shadowy figure from the beginning is his father. Of course. And this man, just like Marie, is an absolutely horrible person. Like, I have a personal reason to hate him…
Tumblr media
...but he’s also a shit parent. He’s low-key enough that no one apparently pays attention to what he’s up to, but he’s been setting up Toshiro to be Prime Minister since he was a child. And the abuse is not just emotional this time. His father hit him if he questioned him or didn’t obey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The game actually bothers to explicitly mention Shido and the things that happened last year! Atlus! Look at you! I’m so proud! Maintaining narrative continuity! I’m gonna be really impressed if the Thieves ever mention Maruki. Because this is definitely post-Royal for sure 100% because they showed Joker with his grappling hook.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Toshiro also remembers why Leblanc seems familiar. He apparently stumbled in one day and it was such a great reprieve from the pressures of being the primary candidate for Prime Minister that he kept going back. He admits that he might have even seen the kids at some point in the past year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...okay, Goro. Why does Atlus keep including characters in the side games who would bounce off of Goro so well and he’s not even there for it?
He’s got evidence of his father’s misdeeds, though, and he wants to make a deal with the Phantom Thieves. They help him get home, and he’ll make sure his father goes down for his crimes. He does think they need a real reward, and has a crisis trying to come up with something for them...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...before they tell him that the bad guy going down is reward enough. I'll take some jewels, though.
So I can’t wait to beat the shit out of Yoshiki. I dunno where we’re gonna go after that, but this is great so far. P5 always does a great job of making the villains so punchable. It does raise some interesting implications of the future Prime Minister knowing the identities of 8/10 Phantom Thieves. At the very least, he can make sure that something like Scramble doesn’t happen. They won’t get accused of bullshit they didn’t do.
I am a little more annoyed now that Sumi, at least, hasn’t been mentioned. Goro at this point in the story, they think he’s gone. Of course they wouldn’t mention him. But Sumi is still around? If Atlus didn’t want her in the Kingdom for whatever reason, the game literally started with one of the Thieves arriving to Leblanc in the rain. Just throw in a line about how she’s running late, and she doesn’t get there before shit gets weird. It’s not that hard!
But we’ll see how it goes, I guess!

i find it really interesting how almost every palace arc in P5 is specifically something personal for the phantom thief it was written for. kamoshida personally hurt both ryuji and ann, madarame abused yusuke, futaba's haunted by grief, haru's father disregards her, shido ruined akira's life, the depths of mementos gets morgana to remember what he is...
for sae, you can argue that her work relationship with akechi is shaky because of how sae's far too focused on herself, but that is a bit of a stretch. hell i'd argue that akechi having nothing personal with or against sae is kind of the point, since he joins the team for a different reason than the others did, and since he's uh. yeah.
makoto, though...she doesn't really have anything personal dealing with kaneshiro. you can say she does, and you'd technically be right, but the thing is...it's kind of forced? like, she's thrown into the situation because of her own actions and we're expected to feel bad for her right then and there. there's not as much build-up (aside from the sae flashbacks, but that doesn't serve anything regarding kaneshiro outside of makoto's internal conflict) as there is with the others--even haru, i'd argue.
and i feel like that makes makoto's arc a little weaker than the rest. it doesn't have as much substance--to me, at least. i can get what it's trying to go for, giving the arc a different formula than the other two that just played out, but the execution's kinda....eh. it needed some tweaking, in my opinion. that's just me though

Chapter 9
Pairing: Kazuha x reader, Ayato x reader (could be both in a way?)
Genre: Arranged marriage, angst, multiple endings
a/n: I really hate how I wrote this chapter at first but after going back and re-reading several times it's alright I guess.

Ayato and Y/n were sitting in your seats during the meeting with the Shogan when all of a sudden Matsuura's wife spoke up, making everyone look at her confused, even Ei.
"Lord Ayato," she calls out for him, making the man paused in his actions since he was getting some water for Y/n who was thirsty at the time. "You and your wife are still young and in your prime, why hasn't she gotten pregnant yet, or is it simply because she can't have children?" The couple looked at her surprised, not expecting this question.
Kamaji gasps at this as well as the rest of the people present in the room, Thoma who was standing behind Y/n and Ayato's chairs stood up straight, he glared at the woman who continued to taunt the two of you.
Ei blinked at this, clearly not knowing what to do, after all this was the first meeting with her and not the puppet in her place and Makoto was the one who always attended these meetings.
She looks over at everyone, trying to say something to calm down the situation but Ayato and Y/n beat her to it.
"Oh? Ayato and I thought of it in the past," the h/c haired woman said, a smile on her lips, which was a total lie in the end but the rude woman doesn't need to know that.
"Since we received word that her excellency was going through with the decree, we decided against it." Ayato finishes her sentence and narrows his eyes at the woman who jumps at his eye contact.
Y/n lets out a chuckle with a smile still painted on her lips, she leans her chin on the back of her hands, "you see, I don't want any children growing up in such a place because, in my mind, all I could think about was 'if any of my children gets a vision, would the Shogan send her soldiers to take it away from a mere child?"
Ei freezes up at this, her mouth opens and closes but no words come out. "We are still rather young, I would rather enjoy my youth to the fullest."
The woman scoffed at this, "I highly doubt that, you must be waiting for the Kaedehara kid to come back. Are you afraid he wouldn't want you back after sleeping with the Yashiro Commissioner? No one wants a woman who isn't pure—"
Ayato stands up at this, clearly getting frustrated by what she was saying, everyone looked up at him and he flashes a smile.
"Her excellency, I'm afraid my wife and I have urgent matters to attend so please, excuse us." Ei blinks at this, watching as Ayato helps Y/n up from her seat.
"O-oh yes, that's all I wanted to discuss." The archon says.
As everyone is getting ready to leave, the Kamisatos are speaking to each other, "My lady, are you okay?" Thoma whispers to her, concerned as she keeps her eyes on the woman who said those things moments ago.
Ei was making her way to the h/c haired when she comes to a stop.
"Tell me, it was my family who paid you to come to bug me again, wasn't it? You do know very well it's suspicious enough to have any connections to the formal L/n clan, especially after all the crimes they committed."
(they did in fact pay her....)
Y/n began to count all crimes, one by one as the room went quiet, "let's see, trying to sabotage our wedding, trying to remove me from my late mother's will, kidnapping, sexual assault, poisoning, abuse of power, 5 failed assassination attempts, 7 murder attempts as well, and the list goes on."
"Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if they paid you. Are you in desperate need of money, anyways, I won't say another word about this, just remember having any deals with them is illegal."
Ayato holds out his arm for her to take while Thoma grabs their coats, preparing to leave the meeting room.
"You-!"
"Enough! We mustn't argue in front of her excellency, everyone." Kujou Sara yells, making the woman shut down instantly. "The meeting is over, let us all return home on good terms."
Ayato guides his wife to the exit, a hand on her back and he can't help but let out a smitten smile at the sight of the scowl on her face as Thoma says goodbye to everyone.
"Now now, we shouldn't be mad over something like this." He tries to reason with the h/c haired and it works as she lets out a small tsk.
Sipping on a cup of tea, you sigh in relief, finally, you had gotten a break from the paperwork and the preparation for the welcome gift for the guests was set in planned out officially.
Ayato had gone for a small walk but not without saying 'a see you later' to you before leaving, planting a kiss on the temple of your forehead.
Just remembering that moment alone made you slam the cup you were holding a bit too hard as your ears burn red, your face flustered as if steam was coming out from it.
You say there for a minute before shaking your head from those thoughts, fanning your burning face when a knock at the door interrupted.
"Lady Y/n, we have some quests looking for Lord Ayato." You sit up, patting down the kimono to have a decent appearance for whoever was the guests.
Clearing your throat, "let them in," you say in a stern voice and the doors open to show it was the blonde traveler and the floating child that intrigued you.
"Greetings, Traveler and your companion. Come, sit down." You gesture to the sit in front of you, taking a sip of tea as the traveler sits down while the child stayed floating.
"If you're looking for Ayato, I'm afraid he isn't here. He's on his break, most likely meeting up with his oni friend for a beetle fight." You explain to them and you let out a quiet cough, you didn't think much of it.
"Yeah, a break from you," Paimon whispers to herself before clearing her throat.
"We didn't come for him, we're supposed to meet up with him tomorrow." Raising a brow at this, now you're confused. "Then, are you here for Ayaka?"
The traveler says no, "oh, Thoma is tending to the gardens—"
"Look lady," the floating child's voice filled with annoyance caught you off guard. "We didn't come for any of them, we came to see you."
"For me?" They nod their heads, "then, how can assist you two today, I will do my best."
Paimon lets out a quiet 'hmp', crossing her little arms together, "how about you get divorced and leave Ayato alone." Your hand froze as you reached to serve them some tea, your face held a dumbfounded and surprised look. "Eh?"
You quickly regain your composer, "excuse me?"
"We heard all the bad things you've done to Ayato, you forced him into this marriage and he's unhappy."
You didn't even notice that Thoma had returned from outside at this point.
"You cheated on him nevertheless, it's bad enough that you don't love him. So do everyone a favor and leave him alone, Paimon thinks you're greedy and a control freak who wants nothing more than—"
"THAT'S ENOUGH!" The pot of a flower he picked fell on the ground, shattering as Thoma glared at them.
You at this point just stared at them in disbelief, unable to find her voice to even defend herself.
"Don't speak to my lady in such a manner." Thoma angrily shouts as he rushes over to see the h/c haired was alright but frowned upon seeing how twisted your face was with shock and sadness. The way your eyes wrinkled a bit but that sadness quickly turned into anger.
Thoma could feel how the air changed in a moment and before you could do anything you may regret later, he wrapped his arms around you, calming you down as the plants that were in the room began to wither into ashes.
"Traveler, Paimon, I think you two overstayed your welcome here. Leave before—"
The woman glared at this, tears brimming in her eyes filled with such hatred, "Thoma, escort them out from the estate or I will have someone kick them out with force." You stand up, ripping yourself from his hold as you look down at the traveler and Paimon.
"I don't want either of you at the estate from this point now, if there is anything I hate the most, it's rude people who try to tell me how to live my life, especially a couple of strangers, whom I could care less about." You splat at them, trying to calm your anger but it was no use.
"Hey, you can't just say a rule like that when this isn't even your home. This is Ayato and Ayaka's home, just cuz you two share a last name doesn't mean anything!" Paimon yells at you which you shout back, what she said triggered you.
"This has been my home for as long as I remember, don't even get me started on the L/n estate, that place was a nightmare!"
Thoma crossed his arms, "you two, apologize to her right now or I have no choice but to kick you two out for today."
"Hah, as if Paimon's going to apologize to someone like her. Paimon meant every word to her." Paimon turns her head, "Paimon is just stating what other people told us, she is nothing but a bad person."
You and Thoma look at each other, "If I see either of you here, I will report you for trespassing, do I make myself clear?"
"As if Paimon is willing to see your face again."
The h/c haired turns her back on them, "I am extremely thankful for you stopping the decree, Traveler."
Paimon gasps, she wasn't even mentioned. "Hey, you forgot Paimon!"
"As far as I'm concerned, the traveler did all the work, it didn't seem like anyone else was helping with those battles with the Shogan now, was there? You saved a nation, don't try to save this marriage, we're completely fine how we are."
You sigh, looking over at the blonde, "Thoma, after they leave, make everyone conduct an investigation to make sure they didn't tamper with the water or food, who knows who sent them."
Thoma nods, "of course, my lady." He told them to leave escorting them outside, leaving you to your thoughts.
You felt embarrassed and humiliated deep down inside, honestly thinking that maybe they could be friends since they seemed like nice people yet here they are, believing such lies.
"Have they....finally made a move after all this time?" You ask yourself, wiping your eyes as you open a window to look down at Inazuma, eyes glued on a building in the city.
"I need to be prepared, who knows what the L/n clan is planning after all this silence."
Shutting the window and looking over at the room and you frown, your brows furrow in sadness.
"....my gift to Ayato, it's ruined." Falling to your knees, you pick up the withered flowers and place them in the palm of your hand. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to destroy you." You whisper to the flowers, you had worked hard for these yet it all went to the trash.
Sighing heavily, you begin to clean up the ashes of the plants and glance at the broken pot on the floor, the one Thoma dropped in shock.
"It's a dandelion, how rare." Looking at the plant, you see a letter covered in dirt and you pull it out.
A heavy blush grows on your face, you didn't even notice the rapid beating of your heart as you read what the note said.
Your eyes land on a familiar signature at the bottom, your lips curled up into a tiny smile.
"My lady-" You jump up, hiding the letter as you look back to see Thoma looking at you a bit confused. "The traveler and Paimon have been escorted from the estate, I informed them that the inspection is a normal protocol among people we don't know very well."
Clearing your throat, you see him glance at the dandelion that was now tidied up and in a pot. "Oh, you cleaned up the mess."
Letting out a hum at this, you put the note on the table and leave it there for later.
"Let's go have some lunch at the tea house." You say to him before entering your room to change into appropriate clothes.
You hear Thoma let out a confused noise from the other side of the screen you were currently changing behind.
"Lunch? I thought you had work piling up today, my lord isn't here either.....shouldn't someone be doing work?"
You peek your head out, "how about you go have lunch while I finish your work—"
"Absolutely not." You tell him sternly, giving him a blank stare before going back to change.
"What's with the sudden change of plans, does it have something to do with Paimon's words? I'm sure she didn't mean it." He says, "actually, I don't think even the traveler takes her words seriously half the time."
You pause at this, you knew that Thoma knew them a bit longer than you have since you and Ayato weren't publicly present when the traveler arrived in Inazuma. The blue-haired thought it was best to work in the shadows since you two represented the Tri-commissions so all you could do was sit back and help him with those plans.
Thoma clears his throat, "either way, there's no excuse for what she said to you. So please, don't let this ruin your mood, I don't that to add more stress on you, okay?"
Putting your hair in a low ponytail, you tie it with a ribbon and step out to see Thoma checking the room for dust. You stand there dumbfounded, you watch him checking all over the desk and you suppress a laugh.
"Oh! Sorry, let's head out!" He realizes that you were done and the two of you head out. You tell the two guards out that you two would be heading out for lunch, which Thoma did try to pay for but you refused and paid for the both of you.
Needless to say, due to how festivals always create much work for you and Ayato, the note he wrote with your gift was somehow messed up with the diagrams that Ayaka showed everyone a couple of days later.
It got into Kazuha's hands when he noticed it on the floor but it was unnoticeable to everyone else. When he picked it up, he didn't have time to read what was inside when everyone decided to head outside to find Kujou Sara. Deciding to read it later, he puts it in his pocket.
With the goal in mind that he has to see you once more after all this time.

Tumblr media
If the Fortune Arcana is literally a fortune teller, I am going to slash some tires. Especially since, like, the point of the fucking Wheel is that you are not in a position to see where it will turn.
Tumblr media
Some journalist I've seen for like five minutes makes a deal with Reverie. She'll give a name of the criminal running the scams in Shibuya but she wants access to someone at Shujin who suffered under Kamoshida's abuse.
Which is a shitty deal, so calling it: Devil arcana.
Morgana suggests Mishima for the deal, so, uh
Tumblr media
I hate Mishima but this feels terrible. 8C Come on, he's gonna think it's a date and instead someone is gonna ask him about the volleyball coach beating him. This sucks, Persona 5 Royal!!!! I hate this!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And Ryuji gets accosted by... drag performers??? Or are they just queer people? I am literally looking through my screencaps of this scene and I frankly don't get what it's trying to imply here???? I feel like it's a joke at my people's expense but I'm missing context, so. SHRUG.
Tumblr media
Kaneshiro's palace seems to be the entirety of Shibuya's central street. Which made me think they just didn't want to make new assets but I'm proven wrong in a bit.
Seeing people as walking ATMs doesn't make sense to me, like, you withdraw from your own account with ATMs, not from the magical ATM fairy. I don't get this metaphor. Whatev!
Tumblr media
TURNS OUT THE ACTUAL PALACE IS A FLYING BANK. Alright. That's sure a thing.
Tumblr media
I feel like this was an incredibly valid question. Unfortunately, Morgana cannot turn into non-car things. Which really begs a lot of questions about why he can become specifically a van.
Tumblr media
Ryuji when was the last time you were useful, homes, you are the one who got us into this fucking mess with Makoto because you kept screaming about being a Phantom Thief, you absolute dunderfuck. Don't insult Morgana.
Tumblr media
Dinnertime at the Nijima Household.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a totally inappropriate reaction but I started laughing in disbelief because like. This turn is SO hard and SO sudden and came out of nowhere???? Sae, bruh, what the fuck, are you having a bad day?
Tumblr media
OH MY GOD SHE IS LMAO THAT'S HER EXCUSE. And then she says she's going to stop coming home for dinner from now on???? Holy shit?
lmao as the main caretaker of a very frustrating person who drives me batshit, I am judging Sae so fucking hard right now. Remember the halcyon days when we first met Sae? God, I barely remember. Now she's interrogating our card collection and making Dojima look like Parent of the Year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Thieves meet up to talk about how to reach the Palace and Makoto just invites herself along again, and Ann happens to call her "useless" and oh my god is this like her trauma trigger?
Tumblr media
ATLUS
WHO THE FUCK WAS YOUR SCENE COORDINATOR FOR THIS SEQUENCE
AM I SUPPOSED TO TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY?
YOU JUST FLASHED BACK TO A SCENE THAT LITERALLY JUST HAPPENED 40 SECONDS AGO.
Tumblr media
Makoto completely loses her shit and is like "okay fine I will go find you Kaneshiro" and storms off
Tumblr media
Gets shoved into the back of an unmarked car by two thugs
Tumblr media
Everyone very reasonably flips their shit too and chases after her, including Ryuji throwing himself into the path of a speeding car to make it stop
which: is the most Chariot shit any Chariot has ever Charioted, but also if he got hit doing this, I would have deleted the game in a rage-blackout, i'm so furious with Makoto
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and oh she leads them to Kaneshiro! and he immediately snaps a photo of them all for blackmail purposes. he wants 3 million yen in 3 weeks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
HEY YUSUKE?
THANK YOU
Everyone gets a shot of sympathy for Makoto because she's like super sorry that she flipped her shit and ran off and confronted some mafia dudes and got in their car and wound up needing a rescue and then got everyone on the hook for 3 million yen, which is about what I make in a fucking year (roughly)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
whatever, they bring her into the Metaverse, she pops her Persona, it's a motorcycle, which is way more fucking cool than she deserves
Tumblr media
you know what, same here. same here.
I think I feel comfortable saying, yeah, this is worse than Ryoji. If anyone is hoping I turn on Makoto later, do not hold your breath, because this is a staggeringly bad prolonged introduction to this character. I am to a point I want to sit down with the writers and just ask them to explain to me what impression they intended to leave on the player, taking a character who has thus far only been a stalker and harasser of the protagonists turned outright blackmailer turned into oh now someone else is blackmailing us bc of her? and then handing her off like "here's a new teammate"
what
the actual
fuck
thank you and good night. I'm going to bed.

Right so this feels kinda outta nowhere but I'm reminded of why I started the Hope Universe. XD A. To satisfy my Naegi ship greed and B. To show a better alternative. A happier ending even with some bumps in the road. But there are two pairings I always keep at the top of my many Naegi ships. Makoto X Seiko and Makoto X Junko. Why? Because those two are on complete opposite ends of the spectrum and represent the foundations ironically of the Hope Universe. Seiko represents the good nature and fluff. But also a person who dealt with emotional abuse from Ruruka and Izayoi. Yet in this universe, things managed to get patched between them thanks to some much-needed intervention and a mutual egg. Junko on the other hand is the representation of rehabilitation and how rocky that can be. A person who wants to destroy the world and is teetering on madness but is brought into the light. In short, she's the idea that it's not too late no matter who you are. It doesn't mean things will magically get easier or redemption will be automatic but that it's a long-going process and you CAN be better than where you were. Unfortunately though Junko also....XDDD let's just say she did a 180 and arrived at the right side from the wrong approach. But even with issues there, I wanted to share with you all a special kinda family bonding. One that Is frankly long overdue. I want to show Seiko and Junko despite being polar opposites....just being happy if only for a moment. That's it. A snapshot of their lives in different moments. Even their children which you may or may not be familiar with. Hitomi the arrogant eccentric Surgeon and Akira the brooding and withdrawn bodyguard (Yes her acting like Mukuro is intentional and meant to be ironic :P)
Also, I realized that the Hope Universe was much bigger and more important than I realized. Heh, I guess between my account being basically hidden I kinda lost motivation XDD But it doesn't matter if 1, 10, or 100 people see this. I know *YOU* yes you appreciate the hope universe and this is all I can do to make your day better in my own small way.
Just want to thank you all for continuing to follow me and like my stuff and all that mushy stuff :PPP And remember to never give up on hope. Junko hasn't (Although it's debatable she understands what hope means ;;;;;;;;(人◕ω◕)) and neither has Seiko. And neither will you!
Without further ado let me present to you:
Family Bonding 19

for me the narrative between byakuya and toko has always been the idea of wrong person. bc they make each other worse, but that doesn't mean they're bad people. toko shows us that she can be caring and loving towards someone else, but that byakuya brings out that obsessive side of her and with byakuya we see him genuinely care about others without the abuse he constantly flings at toko
SO TRUE SO TRUE!!! you are so right! i am going to talk a lot bc toko gives me so many brainworms
when it comes to toko's byakuya obsession, i always go back to the one particular bonus conversation from ultra despair girls that comes up when you find the so lingers the ocean book (this video has all of them for reference!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vITxgxLL8vQ&ab_channel=GameMoviesCult ) bc toko says something that really speaks to her character and it really stuck with me - that the reason she writes romance novels is because she truly believes that she can never have a healthy relationship like the ones she writes in real life.
toko fixates on byakuya as an unachievable desire and tortures herself obsessing over him because as she states herself, she thinks she will never find someone who actually cares about her. i honestly think it's because he treats her terribly that she fixates on him in particular - if anything, after her prior romantic experiences where people pretended to care about her just to use it as a way to turn around and make fun of her, she has lost confidence in the idea that anyone who is nice to her actually genuinely cares about her. she at least knows that byakuya isn't lying to her because of the way he treats her, and that honesty is refreshing to her even if it is abusive.
and then komaru comes around and changes her mind to the point that she feels so happy and loved that she questions if she can even write her novels in the same way because her writing is fueled by that loneliness she has experienced for her whole life. we see a side of toko where she shows love in a way that is more natural and genuine. i do think that letting toko's relationship with komaru be enough for her to at least start overcoming her byakuya obsession would have made udg a lot better for her development, and i remember my immense disappointment that the game ended on a note where she is still obsessed with him in the same way as she was since the beginning.
meanwhile, with byakuya, he is quite obviously disinterested in toko's advances which is fine in itself, but the way he handles it is what puts him in the wrong - i see people defending his treatment of toko because of her own actions, and i agree to an extent when it comes to him simply being rude to her, but he outted her did to everyone and tried to frame her for murder, he told her to harm herself with a taser, and there are some other similar instances are when he takes things waaaay too far. i also don't like the way that he takes advantage of her obsession by forcing her to do tasks and favors for him - if anything, he's enabling her rather than getting her to leave him alone, and it never sits right with me.
however, someone like makoto brings out the good side of byakuya, and it's clear that he genuinely cares about him in a lot more healthy way. we see this character development a little bit in the end of thh and dr3, but once again, i think it would have been better for the sake of his character development and toko's if we saw her at least start to progress out of her obsession by the end of udg!!
sorry for the literal essay. i love these two so much and think about this constantly

It's been some time (probably only a few weeks) since I wrote up an actual summary of modernverse and what's going on. All under the cut but!!!
trigger warnings: abuse, parental neglect, drugs, alcohol, vandalism, and probably more.
Kami is the older son of Makoto, who was the twin sister of Ei. She was never a great mother, but she was the only parent Kami ever had. All through growing up, he resented her and despised any attempt she made, especially where his younger sibling, Arakan, was concerned.
Makoto cared more about spending every waking minute with Ei than actually paying attention to her kids. This meant that Kami was often stuck with raising Arakan and himself, even though the two were only a year apart in age. Still, Kami did it because in his mind, Arakan still needed guidance, needed someone to look out for them. If Makoto wasn't going to do it, no one else would.
So throughout his childhood, Kami was the one making all sacrifices. Never really had any friends, never got to go out and enjoy being a kid. His job was to make sure Arakan had the option to. Makoto wasn't completely neglectful though, she still managed to leave money for the kids to spend if needed. It wasn't like either of them ever went without food or some forms of entertainment, though Kami usually saved more of that money for Arakan's needs and wants, sacrificing his own.
Makoto ended up dying with the kids were teenagers. They hadn't even graduated high school yet. Kami arranged for a small funeral, shutting down his own emotions and kept himself from grieving properly at all. It was at this point when all his resentment for everything Makoto did boiled over.
Kami resented his sibling. Kami resented his aunt, and even cousin. Kami hated everything about his life, and the second he graduated high school, he left. Took off, deciding he no longer cared. He'd done his part in caring for whatever broken family he'd had, and couldn't do it anymore. His anger over Makoto being neglectful and then dying had sent Kami over the edge.
He lived on the streets for a few years. He didn't know what he was doing with life, really, and ended up turning to drugs and alcohol to ry and stave off the anger that kept threatening to build over. He ended up meeting someone who he thought would change his life around: Katelyn.
She was beautiful, and she acted sweet toward him. It didn't matter to Kami if she was using people to get her own drug fix, she always seemed to treat Kami like the adult he tried to be. Respectful and friendly.
Eventually she and her group of friends made their way back to Kami's hometown. Kami didn't like being there, but for some reason, Katelyn was the only person he'd ever listen to, and she had some uncanny ability to talk him into doing things her way.
Their relationship, whatever it was, continued for a couple of years. Kami barely remembers any of it, because most of the time she'd get him drunk, or high, or both and use his altered state of mind to continue manipulating, attempting to twist him around her finger so completely. It all came to a head when she managed to manipulate Kami into vandalizing an old bookstore because she had a vendetta against the owner.
Her and her friends fled the scene, leaving Kami behind to take the fall for all the damage. Kami was arrested, and it was then that he realized how alone he really was.
His community service was to serve time working in a library. Kami loathed it at first because he hadn't read much before, never having the time to. But a 16 year old kid by the name of Chongyun came into the library one day, asking for books about ghosts or hauntings. The two ended up forming a tentative relationship at first, because Kami was 20 at the time. But over the course of a few weeks, the two ended up growing closer, and he eventually told Chongyun he kinda liked working at the library.
It was Chongyun who suggested Kami stay employed, so Kami did, finding ultimately it was his favorite place to hang out. His probation officer ended up helping Kami find a more permanent place to live, a small 2 bedroom apartment.
It took Kami another few years to get back in contact with what was left of his family. Because of Makoto and even because of Katelyn, Kami was still incredibly bitter and angry, and so convinced that his sibling and cousin would hate him. He tended to avoid them, sticking only to his inner circle of one friend, but that wasn't helping his mood, especially when Ren and Arakan were popping up everywhere.
It all came to a head when a message from Ei stirred shit up. Everything Kami had kept buried ended up exploding outward, leaving him finally trying to repair the broken bridges with both Arakan and Ren.
It's not an easy process, and there's still a ton of tension that's lingering. A lot of resentment and bitter feelings on all ends. But Kami's trying, and still leaning on Chongyun and even Chongyun's new boyfriend for help, Kami's determined to try and let things go without running away again, even though he wants to.
And who knows, maybe all these people that Ren's bringing into the mix can help as well. He loves his younger sibling, and he loves his cousin.
Maybe one day they can be their own family without a dead mother and a deadbeat aunt getting in the way.
And maybe Kami can move on from Katelyn with his new boyfriend.

(posting today [12/24] would be optimal but by no means necessary 💖)
And so, it is your birthday and hers. It is... difficult to put my feelings towards you into words. The lifetime we spent as friends was so far removed from the world most from our source knew, after all. I just want you to know I never blamed you for what your sister did, nor did I ever hold any animosity towards you for preventing me from killing her on the spot, no matter how much I thrashed and screamed and cried and begged in the moment.
You had been manipulated from the day you were born. You faced so much abuse and vitriol and agony at her hands. When I tried to leap over that podium to do to your sister what she'd done to so many others we'd known and loved, what she did to Kyouko, what she'd tried to do to you, you tackled me to the floor. I don't know if it was your instincts, your care for your sister despite all she'd done to you and others, or perhaps even care for me as a friend that made you stop me from killing her. In that moment, though, I think I realized that I just wanted to see you in a world without her. A world where you were allowed to be yourself. Not a pawn, not a soldier, not Junko's sister. Just Mukuro, my best friend.
You cried when she died, and I cried with you. Makoto and I defended you to everyone, because you deserved freedom more than anyone else. We stuck by each others sides until the very end after that. I wish I'd been less selfish. I wish I could've looked back on the life I spent with you at the time and been satisfied, just let my soul rest without gambling it away for a chance to tell a girl long-dead how I felt about her decades before-- though I'm also sure you'd never be surprised to hear about me making deals with devils in hell. For as long as I'd known you, even when Junko was still alive, you were probably the best friend I'd ever had.
Thank you for everything, Mukuro. If by some small miracle the you from my timeline is out there and you remember me, I sincerely hope you're still living freely and happily every single day of your life. Happy birthday, my dearest friend.
Sincerely,
Celestia Ludenberg 🃏

Oh man, I love Juzo and do think he's suitably complex, but he is a GIANT bully! He literally beat up Hinata for just trying to go into the main building if I remember right? And Hinata did that to prevent a MURDER. It makes me wonder how Natsumi got in the main building to be murdered. Is it just that Hinata doesn't come from an influential family so he gets to beat him up while letting Natsumi do the same thing? Oh my god, I hate Munataka sometimes too. I mean, I feel bad for him? I feel bad for him. But he literally told Makoto to k/ll himself. I mean sure, he thought Makoto might be the one who started the killing game—which is ridiculous and I'm not even sure he believes that at all, to be perfectly honest, because why would a traitor do what he suggested what's even the point in suggesting it, but even if we were going to take that claim in good faith, uh, still probably shouldn't say that. I will say I personally like Natsumi, even though her actions are inexcusable—I find her somewhat sympathic in the fact that a lot of her actions are rooted in insecurity. I mean, you could also be like, cool motive, still bullying to that and I think it'd be super fair, but I definitely sympathize with her a lot better than say, Hiyoko. I do think that since she's a kid (or was when she died I mean) she has the potential to grow out of it a bit, if she can just get her head out of her ass, since I don't think we should give up on kids, full stop. Like, obviously Natsumi isn't real so if you don't like her that's obviously fine, but I think I come at it through the perspective that, if she was real, she should be given a chance to change and get better. Which would mean an adult telling her off and inforcing real consequences, I think. While still remaining sympathetic and keeping a big eye out for abuse since a lot of bullies (especially elementary and younger) are just mimicking behaviors from adults in their lives. Teach the kid to be better and give them a real chance. But of course, this should be done by adults, not the kids in the situation because kids (especially the bullies victims) should not have that pressure and responsibility put on them. Honestly, I find the adult characters like Juzo who act this way way more upsetting, because they should know better. They're no longer a kid. I do still think Juzo's motivations make him sympathetic, but it in no way excuses what he did. Natsumi's actions aren't even excusable, even if I think she probably has the motivation I sympathize with the most. She definitely didn't deserve to die (and neither did Sato).
I don't know if you've ever tried to watch/read this, but I think you'd hate how BNHA handles Izuku and Bakugou's relationship. I know I do. It keeps putting the responsibility of making Bakugou into a better person on Izuku, his bullying victim. Not a great look, imo.
Note: The bit about Juzo is referencing this post.
Hajime was attempting to enter the main building to talk to Mahiru AFTER Natsumi and Sato were already found dead. But otherwise, yeah; he was trying to get into the Main Building, and Juzo beat the shit out of him and gave him a speech about how he needed to "know his place." He later claimed to Yukizome that he was just trying to protect Hajime from getting involved in the murder case and getting hurt as a result, but I'm pretty sure that a lot of people could've done that WITHOUT physically assaulting him while totally degrading and devaluing him. To make matters worse, his little speech would be the final tipping point that would make Hinata decide to sign on for the Kamukura Project.
Tumblr media
UNHELPFUL.
I always kind of thought that Sato must've killed Natsumi in the Reserve Course Building, though. After all, we see Mahiru have no problem visiting the Reserve Course to see Sato, so clearly Main Course students could swing over at any time. Or, on the flip side, you could always assume that guests are allowed in the Main Course building so long as they were escorted in by Main Course students. That way, it's easy enough to assume that Natsumi was taken there by Fuyuhiko and Sato was taken there by Mahiru, and uh... events unfolded from there.
Hm. If we assume that the basics of what we're told in DR2 Chapter 2 regarding Natsumi's death are largely true, then I wonder how well Sato knew Ibuki, Hiyoko, and Tsumiki?
Munakata's basically the real antagonist of Future Arc IMO. The "mastermind" is ultimately irrelevant compared to Munakata's aggressive slide into — let's just call it what it is — despair. I don't mean the capital-D "I'm a remnant and a Junko devotee" kind of Despair, but rather, the lowercase-d "I'm devoid of hope of all hope" kind of despair. I suspect that Chisa was slowly working on his corrupting his way of thinking over their years together between Despair Arc and Hope Arc, and this is where all those chickens come home to roost.
He becomes very Black/White in his worldview, deciding that anyone who does aid or even could potentially aid the cause of Despair must be destroyed. Which is kind of ironic for someone who we’re clearly supposed to feel “gray” about by the end. .... And sadly, living in modern America has increasingly made me feel sympathetic to his worldview. I, too, am coming around to the idea that the only way we can deal with the hate and oppression of the other side is to give them no fucking quarter or forgiveness, ever. When shit gets THIS goddamn bad, and the other side is THAT fucking twisted, I guess that’s just how it starts to feel.
Thankfully, Naegi was able to still see that the “Remnants of Despair” had the potential to be restored, redeemed... and maybe one day, forgiven?
I guess Natsumi does deal with a lot of insecurity, but there are certainly plenty of other insecure DR characters who don’t lash out and create a toxic environment all around them. Shuichi, Makoto, Tsumiki, Chihiro, Mitarai, Seiko, Kazuichi, Hajime, and Ryoma aren’t making others feel like shit or threatening their lives, right? Uh, except for when some of them were still Remnants/brainwashed. :P
However... I guess Natsumi has some like-minded company in the form of Ruruka. She, too, projects absolute confidence outwardly but is actually internally insecure in a manner that is utterly destructive and toxic to those around her. I wonder if there’s some kind of parallel to draw between these trios. Natsumi = Ruruka, Mahiru = Seiko (or is Hajime the Seiko?), and Sato = Izayoi? Those last two are both in the “twisted love drives them to take terrible actions” camp... and both situations are ultimately tragic for everyone involved. OH SNAP, there’s another “trio” we can parallel in this story - Munakata, Sakakura, and Yukizome! But in THAT particular trio, everybody involved is ultimately a toxic presence... so I’m not sure how that necessarily applies. I guess Chisa is probably the Seiko/Mahiru, and uh, Juzo is the aggressive bully so he’s probably the Natsumi/Ruruka? Which makes Kyosuke the Sato/Izayoi... OOHHH SHIT that totally works. His twisted love for his (unbeknownst to him) brainwashed girl ultimately drives him to his terrible actions! I think we have a winner here!
Tumblr media
Cinematic Parallels?
But okay, back on-topic now: It’s definitely easier to accept these kinds of characters as inviting their own fates within the realm of fiction. With better communication and — as you suggest — an adult who could step in and steer the most toxic members into a form of treatment, things didn’t have to go as badly as they did for any of those people. A little understanding from someone in authority and the ability for them to self-reflect could’ve saved five or six lives here. The sixth one being that, if Natsumi hadn’t been killed, Hajime never would’ve received that fateful dressed-down and pummeling from Sakakura. Which might have given him pause about the Kamukura Project for long enough to bow out, but who can really say? Ultimate, in a perfect world, maybe none of them had to die.
And hey, none of this is me saying that Natsumi and Ruruka aren’t responsible for their own fates. They definitely invite what is brought down upon them in tons of ways. But I can blame them and say that they majorly suck without also saying they were beyond any hope, you feel?
For that matter, I’m also not saying Natsumi and/or Ruruak would become good people all of a sudden if they were cared for and listened to. Personally, I’ve never seen bullies actually grow up into good human beings in adulthood. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen just because I haven’t seen it, and more importantly, this is fiction! Such redemptions are much more believable/possible in fiction, IMO. Just look at Fuyuhiko’s turnaround in DR2.
As a final disclaimer: I am ALSO absolutely not saying that every vicious character is always potentially redeemable. Because, for example? Endeavor from BNHA is just so far past the Moral Event Horizon that there’s no point in even trying. The way he treated women/his wife and his children are just beyond the point of forgiveness. (Naturally, Horikoshi wrote him a “redemption arc” anyway. Motherfucker should be forced to walk the Earth alone forever, eternally attempting to find peace by aiding every person he meets, doing good deeds until the day of his death in a vain attempt to make up for the psychological, emotional, and physical damage he caused.)
Yeah, I did used to watch/read My Hero Academia before I couldn’t take it anymore. And there’s even a pretty healthy “Anti-Bakugo” tag on this Tumblr to prove it. :P So you’re right, I DO hate how that was handled. Although Horikoshi is supposedly FINALLY going to make Bakugo express remorse, I’m told.
Wow... it only took eight fucking years.

Do you know of any protagonists or main character that happens to be emotionally intelligent and respectful like Izuku? Preferably male given the societal expectations between females and males in general.
I believe that outside of abused by parents/parental figures, which are a mainstay for protagonists to get readers' pity, it's the cause for the sheer amount of torture porn, abused Izuku by other characters, the infantilization of Izuku by adults, etc. simply because Izuku's personality that people believe that Izuku has a "weak" personality.
Izuku is distinct for the Coming of Age stories because most protagonists have to learn to get along with others who does not wish too with the power of friendship in order to do their goal. Izuku needs to learn how to use his power but already knows how to work out with others.
Makoto Naegi and Hajime Hinata from Danganronpa are two great examples of these kinds of characters (with Hajime being my second favorite character of all time). The latter is a bit cynical, but it’s a realistic kind of cynical while the former is an optimistic individual (though some might say he’s naive). However, when the two interact with the other characters they’re often very empathetic towards their struggles and form strong friendships with them. I’d also say Shuichi Saihara fits this bill too.
Cassandra Cain from DC is also like this. Trained to be an assassin but was absolutely disgusted by taking a life so she runs away to Batman in order to leave her past behind. Despite her upbringing, she’s very emotionally mature and her whole fighting style involves being able to read her opponent’s movements to predict what they’re going to do.
These are what come into my mind atm but if I remember more I’ll update this list
