Montparnasse had, in fact, encountered Éponine as she stood on the watch under the trees of the boulevard, and had led her off, preferring to play Nemorin with the daughter rather than Schinderhannes with the father. It was well that he did so. He was free.
So, now we find out what Montparnasse and Éponine were really up to instead of keeping watch on the night of the Gorbeau ambush… and also have confirmation that Montparnasse certainly did more than simply stop for a “chat” with Éponine outside the Gorbeau house!
As detailed in the footnotes of the Julie Rose translation of Les Misérables, this reference to Némorin is ultimately Hugo’s way of saying Montparnasse would rather seduce Éponine than engage with crime (note the other reference made here— to “Schinderhannes”— is a reference to a notorious, real life criminal). If anything, Hugo is practically confirming here in a tongue-and-cheek way that the pair slept together that night, and that Montparnasse likely abandoned Éponine after their tryst, which is why Javert was able to capture her.
For anyone interested, I’ve already made a long post unpacking this quote which can be found here. It explains who Némorin was and what Hugo was likely alluding to when he calls Montparnasse Némorin. I think it’s important to note that in the original French, the phrase is “être Némorin” rather than “to play” Némorin, this arguably demonstrates a deeper closeness between Montparnasse and Éponine than the Hapgood translation makes.
The meaning behind this “Némorin” reference can so easily be missed or simply passed over, but I think it’s crucial to acknowledge what these two were really getting up to that evening together— not solely because I’m interested in their pairing— but also because it provides such complexities when it comes to understanding Éponine’s character. It gives a unique insight into Montparnasse as a character too!
Anyhow, the important point in this minor detail is that Éponine and Montparnasse have some sort of unique relationship— I’m not referring to a completely romantic relationship here, but I’m acknowledging how there’s a certain closeness between them seeing as they seemingly slept together on the night of the Gorbeau ambush. It’s good to keep this in mind when we reach later parts of the novel.

I honestly have a very odd perception of ai art if I'm gonna be honest
Like, I really do believe anything, no matter the medium, can be art. And I really think centering the conversation about ai art about whether or not it's real art rather than the more pressing problems with it (artist's work being used to train the ai without permission, some ai being explicitly trained to copy another artists style, the disrespect and disregard towards artists in the ai community, etc etc) is really silly. The argument should not be centered around if a medium is really art. Even if that medium is completely awful, the argument should be centered around how harmful the medium in itself is.
Like my opinion towards ai art personally is that I just simply can't bring myself to care about it. There has been ai art in the past that I enjoyed, but the reason I enjoyed them is entirely because it was used for a joke. Things like wizards selling ketamine out of a van or a naked gnome standing in front of an open window in winter with a silly caption. I enjoyed the art because it was clear someone had a specific image in mind to supplement a quick joke. But even then, that enjoyment is because it is being used for a quick joke, and the image just supplements it. My opinion is a very firm "if you couldn't be bothered to actually write/draw/create this yourself, why should I be bothered to care?" Because although I believe ai art is just another medium in art, it is a medium that brings me nothing but apathy. Alright, you have created art by using text in an image generator. It looks fine. Why do you expect me to praise you for doing such a non action to create digital art? It's a lazy medium primarily used by people who disregard and disrespect art, or people too insecure or lazy to attempt to learn other mediums that require more practice and labor. It is a lazy medium that creates art by stealing from thousands upon thousands of other artists. I can not bring myself to care about something that harms other artists and has about as much passion in it as a single piece of lint I found on the ground and named Jeremy.

Hannibal Lecter did not manipulate anyone into killing who did not already want to kill.
Will wanted to kill. Abigail enjoyed killing with her dad. Margot wanted to kill her brother. Bedelia wanted to snuff out weakness. they all wanted to kill, and they all enjoyed it. these are things that each of them admitted.
yes, it absolutely makes sense to feel angry in favor of characters that were horrendously manipulated. it makes sense to be frustrated, to wish that they had better, and to think that they deserved better. i myself often feel the same way for them.
the issue comes with people opting to listen to the words of characters who are trying to backpedal, who are trying to come up with excuses about why they didn't actually choose to kill. these characters don't want to admit that they've done something awful because they wanted to do it, so they put the blame on an external force.
the show goes as far as to repeatedly tell the audience that these characters wanted to do those things. yes there's guilt, yes there's shock, but they are not completely innocent.
the entire driving force for the plot of the show is that these characters, who are protagonists or otherwise "good", want to kill. the plot of the show brings the viewer steadily towards realizing that the actions and desires of these characters are not innocent, and while they're not on the same level as Hannibal (save for Will, since they're meant to be equals), it's difficult to label Hannibal exclusively as a monster and not the others in some capacity.
we're forced to ask ourselves, alongside Hannibal asking so aloud, how different their desires are from his. is he still such a monster if we're rooting for them?
NBC Hannibal is a show where there is no truly innocent party, everyone has some amount of blood on their hands whether it's directly or not, and to insist that any given character was exclusively a victim is to deprive them of the agency that the show repeatedly expressed them having.
NBC Hannibal is also a show where serial killers are protagonists, so reading the morality of characters the same way you would in a different piece of media doesn't quite fit.

Started watching a "problem with greek myth retellings" video and it began with a blurb montage like "Condemned by the misogynist guys of history, this is the true girlboss feminist story of [A WOMAN]" and like. brb writing one of those about crown prince rudolf. It's ok he's like a misunderstood girlboss to me<3
#NASJASKSDFKDSLFDGJDFJ#joking. since those retellings seem to be often bad#fun fact i do have ideas for like a black teen comedy series with mary as the protagonist where the ending is like a harrowing twist#like you think it won't go that far but it does and the point is that she had historical agency and her own problems and personal journey#but in the end it spiralled catastrophically due to both crown prince rudolf related events and others#unfortunately writing one would draw the ire of both misogynist rudolf conspiracy theorists (how dare you suggest women have agency) AND a#certain type of feminist media critiquer person: (1) how dare you cover a topic like that flippantly 2) how dare you make rudolf anything#but an inhuman monster of a r*pist murderer gr**mer or whatever in the story#like idk man.. other male characters portrayed as romantic interests in mainstream media are toxic r*pists all the time. like omg i hate ho#'the great' handles p*ter and catherine because i was rooting for them to remain toxic and for catherine to kill him or whatever but then#she starts falling in love with him in s2 and everyone in tumblr is like omg hot sexy toxic romance. like cant we have ONE series where#straight romance doesnt inevitably become the overbearing focus?? i had wlw ships for that show.. they never pulled through...#anyway um yeah. the way i would portray rudolf in that is that mary sees him as this romantic hero which is emphasised in the way its shot#but he's constantly acting in kinda offputting and strange ways and is occasionally pretty pathetic and weird ASHDJFJF#^^ that's never been a deterrent to anyone ever. most rudolf biographers want to [redacted] him this has been proven by the way they write.#the only ones that dont are me (well not a real biographer but a rudolf enjoyer nonetheless) and brigitte hamann /hj#(she actually doesnt salivate over his appearance like frederick morton does xD only quotes 2 contemporary women commenting on it)

There are a couple common claims about things MXTX has said in author's notes which I just wanted to make a little note-to-self with the exact context/source of because they keep coming up again and again. I find that between general translation issues and then further filtered through summaries and offhand comments and then repurposed for... uh let's just say spirited debate, they tend to be presented as much stronger or more emphatic or more serious statements than the impression I got when reading them in context (the translated versions, of course!).
'Morally perfect' comes from the postscripts (published by Exiled Rebels as chapter 113.5):
Both WWX and LWJ are highly ideal characters, so there wouldn't be too much dispute on their moral standing. They're perfect as the protagonists. Of course, I do like WWX a lot, but if I'm looking for a boyfriend, sorry, I'll only have LWJ please.
This is the same postscript where she talks about the difficulties of publishing on the timeline she did and how she was worried the structure of the novel would do badly in serialized/webnovel format, how Xue Yang was like a has-been internet idol in the comments section compared to the Jiang Cheng haters (lol), how she threw everything she liked about an ancient setting in a pot and changed whatever she liked without any intention of historical accuracy at all, etc. So the focus of the postscript wasn't like a morality essay or anything, just offhand comments and notes and trivia.
'MXTX wants us to be like Wangxian' comes from the final author's note of the last extra (ExR ch. 126):
Without care for anything at all, I shall give the entirety of my soul to the pen and the paper.
I no longer like to tell my readers, 'I love you.' These words are too light, and yet these words are too heavy.
I hope each of you who enjoys this book can be like Lan WangJi in virtue and Wei WuXian in character.
P.S. I received the help of many in the publication process.
There's more before and after, from talking about how she decided the type of story she wanted it to be, outlining process, and then after she goes on to thank her editors, the webnovel platform, supportive friends, etc.
Whether any given person cares what her opinion is out-of-text or not is another matter of course! But since it gets brought up so much as if they're very serious Word Of God proclamations... well... it's probably pretty obvious my opinion/interpretation lands in the 'it's not supposed to be that serious, bruh' category.
Though even if it were meant to be super serious I'd personally still be like, 'well that's just like, your opinion, random author lady.' But at the same time, these quotes tend to be used in a way that gives a distorted impression of how serious and thorough they were intended to be and often add confusion.
Also I don't think MXTX is saying we should go feed a guy's fingers to a ghost child in front of him while he's forced to eat his own leg but that's really just wild speculation and assumption on my part, maybe she would appreciate that idk.

"The dark side ignited and fueled his anger. He was enraged by the icy water and by the entire planet of Mygeeto. He fought his way to the surface, kicking and clawing and bursting through the ice. And after he broke through the ice, while he was still gulping freezing water and struggling to keep his face above the surface, he saw his Master on the shore." (Windham, 86-7).
This is not only one of Maul's coolest moments, but perhaps a key insight into the nature of the darkside and its users.
Maul experiences the dark side as fire. Maul's dark signature is that of "ignition" -- like a machine being awakened, or a furnace of power. However, it has distinctly desperate traits -- it is one of struggle.
However, Sidious' force signature is here as well. It is ice. What feels like an entire world of awful power pressing down on Maul specifically. Something he rebels against, but is smothered in until his death. And I always preferred the interpretation that Sidious' force signature was frigidly cold.

thinking so hard about . when exactly in the martian timeline they hated and loved eachother can u help me .. cause after turkey 2010 they had their love moments as well and even in 2012 they had their buddy buddy moments so idk !!! they’re confusing
OH MY GOD IM SO SORRY I MEANT TO REPLY TO THIS AND THEN I JUST COMPLETELY FORGOT, SO: hello :D
This is something I think about often as well. Teammates are a weird dynamic in F1 because you're forced to compete for the same resources and against each other in the WDC, but at the same time have to still think combined for the team, for the WCC. I think teammate relationships are like being siblings or like being in a marriage(actually I think Mark has said this before haha.) You can never fully hate or separate from each other, even if you go through rough patches, because you're stuck together and have had the same experiences, for good or for worse.
Turkey 2010 is funny because I think that was one of their first bad moments as teammates, right? And I love that RBR made them take that couples therapy, "us in our get-along shirt", picture. That's what I mean by going through the same experiences, like yeah they were probably pissed at each other but were also probably bonding over the hilarity/awkwardness of RBR making them do damage control.
I just think it's probably difficult to stay upset with someone consistently when you're constantly working with them, and you've also experienced the highest highs and lowest lows with each other. I think I referenced this in my Martian champagne pics post but it's kinda funny when you look through all of those shared podiums that Mark always seemed to be way more willing to spray Seb and smile at him when Mark was the one who won(Literally 3/4 of the pics from that post when they were both at RBR were from Mark's wins.) Like it was such a "I can't stay mad at you 🤭" relationship with them. Like with Mark in particular, it feels like whenever he got a better result, he was mostly like "I shall forgive your transgressions." But then 2013 was kind of the last straw for him, with Multi-21, and especially since he really was getting crushed by Seb and not even getting any wins like in the prev years. But then, by removing himself from it all when retiring, he was able to take a step back and see what it was like to not be in constant, direct competition anymore.
Idk if I'm the best person to ask as I don't think I'm in any measures a great Martian scholar. But these are my thoughts :D I just think being teammates in such a competitive environment can result in such love-hate relationships and that Martian is one of the greatest examples of how it fluctuates. I think it'd be really difficult to try and parse when exactly they were on good or bad terms. For me, tbh I think it kinda correlates with Mark's results because I think with just that whole situation, where they were in as teammates directly competing at the very top, it was a lot easier for Mark, rather than Seb, to start feeling resentment as he was generally drawing the shorter straw most of the time.
Basically, teammates(Martian especially) are bonded through triumph and trauma

Three things I have been learning:
do things that aren't on the internet. with real people. don't get all your opinions online, because it's not a solid depiction of reality. it really really isn't. HOWEVER--don't entirely discount the internet, bc while it is a cesspool of nonsense many times, I have also met all my best friends on it, and I am endlessly thankful for them and legitimately do not know where I would be today without them.
if a song speaks to something extremely deep in you throughout your life, that probably means something. think about it sometimes. try to figure out why it resonates like that, and discern if that means something that could be important or helpful to you.
Van Gogh is my favourite artist for a reason that's about more than just his paintings.

imagine you say 'its a common misconception that 22/7 is equal to pi but its not thats just an approximation thats often used at lower levels" and then someone is like 'ok but i learnt in school that pi is 22/7' and you say yeah it shows up a lot in math problems but when they say pi = 22/7 its just an approximation for ease of calculation and then someone sends you a screenshot of a grade 6 textbook that says pi = 22/7 and youre like, okay so this is one example in one context, and later in the math curriculum they do tell you that pi is irrational, which means it cant be represented as a fraction, so if you use reasoning you can figure out that one of those isnt true and if you double check you can find out that what isnt true is pi = 22/7. and youre getting agitated because people keep coming to you like youre an authority, and you dont have like a phd or anything but you are capable of tutoring math to a certain level, and have done so for a while so you have experience, enough that youre aware that pi is not 22/7, and why people often think it is 22/7. so its beginning to feel a little disrespectful that all these people are like insisting that an easily verifiable fact isnt true because they wont take your word for it, while they are also coming directly to you to tell you that they dont think your reasoning is sound.
can you imagine that.
