So I don't run a lot of TTRPGs besides d&d 5e since it's the one all my homies know and we enjoy playing, but I've got a few campaigns in the works that I think could do with a different system so I thought I'd ask the tumblr ttrpg guy. Any good systems for something like a JRPG themed game with class and skill progression? Rules light or crunchy is fine just so long as it's not like cyberpunk 2020 levels of crunch lmao

I don't quite know what you mean by Class/Skill based progression, so feel free to specify, but I see JRPG and my mind immediately goes to Fabula Ultima!

Fabula Ultima is a tabletop RPG explicitly inspired by JRPGs. At its core it's a very simple system where you have five stats, expressed as dice values from 1d4 to 1d12, and every roll in the game is STAT+STAT and rolling the two respective dice together, trying to exceed a target number. This is also the system used for the game's combat system, but with added depth taking into account weapon type (different weapons use different stat pairs for their attack rolls and have different damage values), status effects (expressed as boost and penalties on certain abilities), and character skills.

Character skills are gained via classes (I can't remember if that was the term used in the game) in a system that is like a simplified tabletop version of the job system from classic Final Fantasies. A degree of multiclassing is built into the game: you start at level 5 already and must have levels in at least three classes to begin with. Creating and leveling a character takes the form of mixing and matching abilities from different classes in order to make a character that fits your vision.

It's an absolutely beautiful game with a simple base system with a lot of depth built on top of it, and really speaks to the love its creators have for JRPGs.

Another one I could see myself recommending is Break!!, which is a very old school adventure RPG but with amazing presentation and myriad inspirations from various sources including JRPGs. It's sadly not currently available to my knowledge since it was Kickstarted, unless it's possible to preorder it somehow? But based on the Kickstarter backer files it is shaping up to be an absolutely fantastic game. Simple, purely stat and level based system with each level in a class (again I can't remember the actual word used in the game) granting a new class ability. Characters are single-classed by default and there are no multi-classing rules, but the classes in the game are very fun and strong archetypes.

Break!! is fantastic and, like, after I had finished playing Sea of Stars I was like "dang I should put a Break!! game together." So yeah

But yeah do get back to me with what you meant specifically with class and skill based so I can tailor my recommendations to you. Also check out @theresattrpgforthat, I wouldn't be surprised if Mint had already answered this exact question :)

Interview with Style Magazine (2024)

British actor Jonathan Bailey became a hot commodity after the smash success of Netflix romance drama Bridgerton, the early 19th-century Regency-era series that catapulted him and his fellow cast members from obscurity into household names when it debuted in 2020.

While most people know him as his character Lord Anthony, aka Viscount Bridgerton, it’s his role in American drama series Fellow Travelers that cemented his status as a bona fide leading man and truly revealed his acting chops.

Bailey’s searing portrayal of a gay activist alongside Matt Bomer in the Showtime series has won Bailey a Critics’ Choice Award and plenty of accolades, from the LGBTQ+ community – Bailey is openly gay – and beyond.

Spanning almost five decades, from the Lavender Scare and McCarthyism of the 50s to the heartbreaking Aids crisis of the 80s, shown through the lives of two male lovers, the mini series is a beautiful love story as well as a remarkable history lesson. (The Lavender Scare was a mass dismissal of homosexuals from government institutions that paralleled the anti-communist campaign of senator Joseph McCarthy.)

Bailey, who is getting ready to embark on the promotional tour of Bridgerton season three, which debuts in May and June in two parts, was recently in Shanghai for the opening of “Crafted World”, an exhibition held by Spanish luxury label Loewe to showcase its history and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of creative director Jonathan Anderson, a fellow Brit and friend of Bailey’s.

On the night of the opening event, after Anderson gave Bailey a tour of the exhibition, we managed to grab the actor for a very quick chat.

Clad in a striped nautical jumper paired with army green trousers and paint-splattered shoes, all from Loewe, Bailey was extremely friendly and excited to share this moment with Anderson and the Loewe family.

Tell me about this trip to China.

It’s my first time here and I’m really upset to leave so soon. I managed to tour Shanghai today and you can just feel inspired being in the city.

What did you like the most about the exhibition?

Jonathan [Anderson]’s eye for collaboration is just next level. I’ve known him for a while and going back to see all his outfits in one room is like a montage of the last 10 years. My first Loewe show was in 2022, and I think his humble approach to understanding craft and collaboration, as well as what it really means to make something with your hands in a very fundamental way, is something that he stays true to. This adds a very special, celebratory and nourishing quality within Loewe as a brand.

Finally, how did it feel to work on a project like Fellow Travelers?

It’s something I’ll be eternally proud of. It’s such an important story; I learned so much. You sort of feel guilty and ashamed that you don’t know about that history. Then you remember that it’s been left out of the history books and, if you can through your work, you can shine a light on stories that haven’t been told and mean so much to so many people.

There is nothing particularly unusual about it: the Western fascination with Yugoslav modernist monuments, those strange concrete boulders scattered across the failed state, is renewed at regular intervals. Four years ago, for example, the Belgian photographer Jan Kempenaers published a photo monograph 'Spomeniks': 'Raised in peaceful fields, in the middle of nowhere', the respected Guardian introduced his book at the time, 'spomeniks look like places where alien spacecraft have landed or like album covers Pink Floyd.'' The filming of the new Netflix dystopian series 'The Tribes of Europa', which tells the story of the distant future of a continent divided - this will sound familiar - into numerous, small, mutually warring states, was completed on Petrova Gora these days. And so on, and so on, further and further away from what Yugoslav monuments used to mean: if there is something in common with all these advertising campaigns, dystopian TV-fantasies and photo-safaris around the places of the people's uprising, it is a complete lack of interest in historical, political and the artistic context from which the monuments grew. In the Western perspective, they are now only gigantic exotic souvenirs from a distant and incomprehensible past. Alien apparitions for which we do not know who exactly built them, when and why: rather traces of UFOs than signs of people's liberation war. Mark O'Neill's series of instagram photos, devoid of any information about the monuments other than the elementary mention of their locations, fits perfectly into such a tradition. So nothing new from the west. Perhaps that is why it is more interesting to check what is happening with the monuments today from the perspective of the East. Coincidentally, last week, just as the post-Yugoslav news portals were compulsively copying O'Neill's photo gallery, another anniversary of the demolition of the magnificent Monument to the Victory of the Revolution of the People of Slavonia by Vojin Bakić, which was erected in Kamenska near Požega, on February 21, 1992, passed almost unnoticed. Members of the 123rd Brigade of the Croatian Army in a well-organized mine action expertly removed them from the face of the earth. Only the small portal Antifašistički Vjesnik reminded of the sad anniversary by publishing a photo gallery of the ruins, along with a brief overview of the then propaganda lies from the local media about how the monument was broken by the Chetniks or, possibly, by a strong wind. But the ruin of Bakić's monument are not very photogenic, there are no spotlights or Instagram filters, it cannot serve as an advertising scenography, so the article from Antifašistički Vjesnik was not shared by anyone. No one to press copy, no one to click and paste: the anniversary of the destruction of one of the most beautiful monuments of the former Yugoslavia did not become news this year either. There is simply no room for some stories in the colorful, colorful, clickable memory of the media, just as there was none twenty-eight years ago. After all, what do you want: it was a war, we clicked cut.

The Gardens of Ynn is a point-crawl adventure set in an ever-shifting extradimensional garden. Each expedition randomly generates a new route as it explores, resulting in different vistas being unlocked with every visit.

The adventure is a perfect zero prep session or campaign for any party of fantasy adventurers, no matter the system or the sub-genre.

Gardens of Ynn is statted generically for Old School Systems, so is easily converted into any fantasy ttrpg system of your choosing.

The book is written by Emmy Allen, interior illustrations by RiotBones with a beautiful silk printed design over bookcloth designed by Alderdoodle. Editing is being handled by Pammu Punzalan with layout by Mina McJanda.

President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he was attending the funeral of his late elder sister, Maryanne Trump Barry.

The president wrote on Truth Social, “Funeral Now. I Love Maryanne. God Bless You. Rest In Peace!”

His comments were attached to an earlier tribute that the president wrote about his late sister this week, shortly after she passed away.

Ms. Barry was a retired and respected federal judge who was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to a New Jersey court and later, nominated by President Bill Clinton as a senior judge for the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals, RSBN previously reported.

The president wrote of his sister this week, “I will never forget the many times people would come up to me and say, ‘Your sister was the smartest person on the Court.’ I was always honored by that, but understood exactly what they meant—They were right! She was a great Judge, and a great sister. She will be truly missed!”

On Monday, multiple outlets reported that Ms. Barry had passed away at the age of 86, after being preceded in death by her younger brother, Robert Trump. Robert passed away in 2020, while President Trump was serving his first term in the White House.

President Trump also suffered the loss of his late ex-wife, Ivana, the mother of Eric Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and Ivanka Trump, in 2022.

The president’s attendance at his sister’s funeral on Friday comes just before a busy weekend on the campaign trail. He will also travel to Texas on Sunday, where he will serve meals to Department of Public Safety troopers and Texas National Guardsmen in Edinburg.

A clone of a Ukrainian blogger selling russian goods was created in China

"Russian beauty, the Chinese welcome you."

The avatars in the video are created from stolen and altered online images. Women in real life recognized themselves in the video.

Olga Loyek is one of these women. A 20-year-old Ukrainian woman studies cognitive science at the University of Pennsylvania. A few months ago, Loyek opened a YouTube channel where she talks about mental health and shares her philosophical views on life. However, soon after that, she started receiving messages from followers who said they saw her on Chinese social networks.

There, she is not Olga Loek, but a russian woman who speaks Chinese, loves China, and wants to marry a Chinese man. Her name is Natasha, Anna, or Grace, depending on the social media platform in China.

"I started translating the videos using Google Translate and realized that most of these accounts were talking about things like China, russia, and how good relations are between China and Russia," she told VOA. "It's very offensive."

In some videos, the avatars talk about how they appreciate the close ties between russia and China. Other clips praise Chinese history and culture or talk about how strongly russian women want to marry a Chinese man.

"If you marry a russian woman, we will do the laundry, cook, and wash the dishes every day," says the avatar. "We will also give you foreign children as many as you want."

Douyin and Bilibili video sites contain several dozen videos in which Loyek's avatar speaks Chinese. Most of these accounts invite viewers to visit online stores to buy what they say are authentic russian goods.

Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok, flagged some of these videos as potentially generated by artificial intelligence. But it is clear from the comments that many believers are looking at a real woman. One user wrote: "Russian beauty, the Chinese welcome you."

Loyek said she would never say such things, obviously considering she is from Ukraine, which has been at war with russia since 2022 [2014 actually - N.B. from the translator]. She said: "It's probably used to make people, maybe people in China, feel that foreigners think their country is the best."

On Bilibili, China's largest video site, some AI videos using the Loyek creature are labeled with HeyGen logos, indicating that the video was created on the company's website.

In one video from Bilibili, the demonstrator even shows how to make a short HeyGen video with clips of Loek speaking. HeyGen is an AI campaign based in Los Angeles that has been operating in China since 2020. It specializes in realistic digital avatars, voice generation, and video translation. According to Forbes, the campaign is now valued at $75 million.

HeyGen's moderation policy states that users may not create avatars that "depict real people, including celebrities or public figures, without express consent."

Avatar campaign video shows users must send videos to people who agree to use their picture Loyek said that after she and her YouTube followers sent complaints to Chinese social media campaigns, about a dozen accounts impersonating her were removed.

This is my personal taste and choice. If we lived in a perfect world where they can wear whatever they want and not just boring black — then these would be my picks. I would love for them to have 2-3 changes. red carpet, event proper and receiving the award. I mean, why not? They have a brand who will dress them so go crazy. lol. I chose ones that are from the recent runways but they will most likely wear custom ones or even pieces that are not yet seen by the public.

My absolute dream for Yibo is to have something with Lace on it ( think Douyin awards ) but Chanel doesn’t have any. So I’m picking his usual rich businesswoman cardigans that he loves to wear. These could be on the carpet cause it’s playful 😊

McLaren's 2024 Pumpkin Can't Be a Lemon

McLaren got the jump on everyone this year by being the first team to officially launch; while not a car, their 2024 livery. While not the most colorful F1 machinery McLaren has ever produced; I find myself missing their beautiful 2020 challenger, the new Papaya and Black scheme leads to a menacing almost Halloween vibe, while still being true to the modern McLaren brand of the Zak Brown Era. 

And speaking of the brand, I cannot help but feel this surprise mid-january reveal was down to the fact that all McLaren factory racing efforts this year look to be standardized in terms of livery, and getting that first bit of F1 news out for the new year, and with their new ‘Whatever it takes’ mantra seemed like a no brainer if the cat was already out of the bag with the start of the Formula E season in Mexico a few weeks ago. 

And on that new motto, I can’t help but feel this sense of confidence from every move McLaren is making right now. Compared to last year’s funeral of a car launch, where expectations were dashed and heads were hung low, the team feels excited and confident with every move they make. 

Despite a slow start last season, 2023 turned into a beautiful year for McLaren, becoming the second fastest team on the grid post-summer break. Lando Norris continued to show brutal speed and consistency across races, and rookie Oscar Piastri showed exactly why he was worth all that fuss in 2022, all while avoid pitfalls we’ve seen other rookies hit in their maiden seasons

Now, after a grueling start and spectacular end to last year’s campaign, the Woking outfit looks to carry that momentum forward to 2024. And they have shiny new toys to try to help, like their brand new wind tunnel, freeing them from using TMG’s excellent, but outdated facility in Cologne. Combine that with new simulators to better help correlation before hitting the track with new upgrades, and McLaren’s new technical team looks to have the right tools to fight at the front. 

While a shock Monza win in 2021 broke broke an almost decade long winless streak, and with a few close calls later that season, the 2022 ground effect regulations threw a wrench in the team’s recovery, and big promises came with reinvestment in the team that followed that disappointing first year of the new rules. And while 23 came good in the end, continued growth must be shown, even if the team isn’t immediately challenging for the title this year. 

McLaren now needs to deliver, and keep showing that any upward ticks in form aren’t just solely the result of other teams missing their mark. They cannot repeat last year, and they also cannot afford to slid backward throughout the season like Aston Martin did last time out. If any team is to escape the F1 midfield, McLaren needs to not just show they’re ready, but show that they are capable of capitalizing on the new, more equitable F1 landscape.

“Trying to steal history.”

On Monday, President Biden delivered a stirring and spirited speech at Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina. In June 2015, members of the congregation at the church invited a stranger to join them for services. The stranger killed nine members of the church in the worst church-related shooting (to that point)—a mass killing that was racially motivated. President Obama delivered a eulogy for Pastor Clementa Pinckney of Mother Emmanuel AME Church that included his rendition of Amazing Grace a cappella.

Against the backdrop of the 2015 racially motivated mass shooting, President Biden addressed Trump's use of the “lost cause” of white supremacy to bolster his hate-fueled campaign. Biden said, in part,

On June 17th, 2015, the [nine] beautiful souls and five survivors invited a stranger into this church to pray with them. The word of God was pierced by bullets in hate and rage, propelled by not just gunpowder but by a poison — a poison that’s for too long haunted this nation. What is that poison? White supremacy. Oh, it is; it’s a poison. Throughout our history, it’s ripped this nation apart. This has no place in America. Not today, tomorrow, or ever. Now — now we’re living in an era of a second lost cause. Once again, there are some in this country trying — trying to turn a loss into a lie — a lie, which if allowed to live, will once again bring terrible damage to this country. This time, the lie is about the 2020 election, the election which you made your voices heard and your power known.

Biden tied the lost cause of white supremacy to Trump's 2020 loss, identifying both of as existential threats to the nation. He then pivoted to Trump's insurrection on January 6 and Trump's threat to continue that assault on democracy if he is elected to a second term in 2024.

Biden said, Just two days ago, we marked the third anniversary of one of the darkest days in American history: January the 6th. The day in which insurrectionists stormed the United States Capitol, trying for the first time in American history to stop the peaceful transfer of power in the country. We all saw with our own eyes the truth of what happened. That violent mob was whipped up by lies from a defeated former President . . . . We saw something on January 6th we’d never seen before, even during the Civil War. Insurrectionists waving Confederate flags inside the halls of Congress built by enslaved Americans. A mob attacked and called Black officers, Black veterans defending the nation those vile of racist names. And yet, an extreme movement of America, the MAGA Republicans, led by a defeated President, is trying to steal history now. They tried to steal an election. Now they’re trying to steal history, telling us that violent mob was, and I quote, “a peaceful protest.” The lies that led to January 6th are part of a broader attack on the truth America today that we all have seen before. The same movement that, throughout the mob at the United States Capitol, isn’t just trying to rewrite history of January 6th, they’re trying to determine to erase history and your future: banning books; denying your right to vote and have it counted; destroying diversity, equality, inclusion all across America; harboring hate and replacing hope with anger and resentment and a dangerous view of America.

Powerful words delivered with passion and dignity befitting the hallowed ground and the proximity to January 6. As Trump's speeches are becoming more unhinged and hateful, Biden’s are becoming more forceful and direct in challenging Trump. If you can spare twenty minutes, watch the video linked above, beginning at the 26:00-minute mark. Your confidence will be renewed.

But I can’t leave this story without commenting on the media coverage. Biden delivered a truly inspirational and important speech on race and democracy. For sixty seconds during Biden’s speech, a protestor stood up and demanded that Biden call for a cease-fire in Israel. Biden handled the protestor with skill and grace. As the protestor was escorted from the church, Biden said,

It's alright. I understand their passion. I’ve been quietly working with the Israeli government to get them to reduce and significantly get out of Gaza.

That sixty-second incident of an otherwise historic speech dominated virtually every headline describing the speech. See, e.g., NYTimes, Protesters Calling for Gaza Cease-Fire Interrupt Biden Speech; The Hill, Biden address in Charleston church interrupted by protesters; and NPR, Protesters calling for a ceasefire in Gaza interrupted Biden's campaign speech.

The bias against Biden is just unbelievable. I wonder if the headline writers or journalists who wrote the articles even bothered to read or listen to the substance of Biden’s speech. I doubt it. Shame on them!

Meanwhile, Trump hopes the economy crashes before he is re-elected.

As Biden continued to call for the preservation of democracy and mourned the tragedies of January 6 and the AME shootings, Trump was telling an interviewer he hoped the economy would crash during Biden’s remaining time in office. See The Hill, Trump says he hopes economy crashes in next 12 months: ‘I don’t want to be Herbert Hoover’.

Trump said,

We have an economy that’s so fragile, and the only reason it’s running now is it’s running off the fumes of what we did. It’s just running off the fumes. And when there’s a crash — I hope it’s going to be during this next 12 months because I don’t want to be Herbert Hoover. The one president I just don’t want to be, Herbert Hoover.

Ha! Trump remembered as Herbert Hoover? He should be so lucky! He will be remembered as Benedict Arnold, Aaron Burr, Jefferson Davis, and Aldrich Ames—combined!

And, in case you think I am resorting to hyperbole, Trump refused to sign a traditional pledge in Illinois in which presidential candidates pledge not to overthrow the US government. See The Guardian, Donald Trump did not sign Illinois pledge not to overthrow government. Trump signed the pledge in 2016 and 2020, but not in 2024. Hmm . . . it’s almost like he’s planning ahead to overthrow the US government!
