“Hengdian is dubbed the Hollywood of China. Many TV series and films are shot here. A lot of young aspiring actors live here, playing extras and picking up odd jobs. I carried a lot of equipment and after two days in scorching heat, I found a “Hengdian drifter” to help me. He thinks the Yuanmingyuan replica is quite grand. Every day we met people dressed in historical costumes or wedding gowns posing for photos on the set.
“I had mixed feelings. This full-size replica is the result of a huge investment but it looks very cheap. But many historical dramas and movies are made in Hengdian and formed our visual understanding of history. My wet plates pictures are also cheap remakes of what the original paintings could have shown. I wanted to use "fake" images to retell "real" events.
“I stayed in Hengdian for about 20 days, shooting the replica with a digital camera. Using wet plates directly would have been too expensive for me. I’d have needed a makeshift darkroom. Back in Shanghai, where I did have access to a darkroom, I printed these 40 photos in my studio and then recaptured them using wet plates. It was like a remake of a remake, a process of reproducing a fake image.” —Shi Yangkun

Quote
And I get it. The tortured artist is the artist that gets remembered for all time, particularly if they either perish or overcome.  But the truth is that so many of us are stuck in the middle. So many of us begin tortured and end tortured, with only brief bursts of light in between, and I'd rather have average art and survival than miracles that come at the cost of someone's life. There will always be something great and tragic to celebrate and I am wondering, now, if I've had enough. I am, of course, in favor of letting all grief work through the body and manifest itself creatively. But what I'm less in favor of is the celebration of pain that might encourage someone to mine deeper into that unforgiving darkness, until it is impossible for them to climb out. I'm less in favor of anything that hurts and then becomes theater, if that theater isn't also working to heal the person experiencing pain. I, too, am somewhat obsessed with watching creations that feel like work. I am less drawn to the artist who at least appears to make it look easy. But our best work is the work of ourselves, our bodies and the people who want us to keep pushing, even if the days are long and miserable and even if there are moments when the wrong side of the bridge beckons you close. All things do not pass. Sometimes, that which does not kill you sits heavy over you until all of the things that did not kill you turn into a single counterforce that might. No matter what comes out of a person in these times, the work we make when we feel like we no longer want to be alive is not the best work if it is also not work that, little by little, is pushing us back toward perhaps staying, even just for a moment.

Yu Hewei: Wang Miao became a part of Shi Qiang’s responsibility. He needed to protect him. Their emotional connection got deeper and deeper. Wang Miao felt this kind of strength and warmth from Shi Qiang.

ok. i know nobody cares about it, but i need to document this on my blog. so on weibo, wang miao's character account posted some photos from the preview of ep 17 which is the train trip he and shi qiang take. the post is mostly about him asking if everyone's ready to go back to work from their hometowns after the chinese new year celebration, and wishing everyone a good year. then, shi qiang's weibo character account reblogged this post, and added something saying he and MIAO MIAO are taking a train trip to somewhere in a few days.

the thing is he called wang miao MIAO MIAO again!!! I'll never get over how he said "我淼淼呢/where's my miao miao" in the game, and he's calling him miao miao again!!! whoever's behind this account knows that we are all obsessed with that line, and they are using it to get our attention!
i mean if you do ship them, don't feel bad. i translated the top 4 comments under this post. trust me, there's plenty of people that do ship them. the chemistry is just insane!
Tumblr media
ps. if you've noticed, my blog title is now "我淼淼呢?"
