Following Jennifer Saint’s wonderful first novel Ariadne, she once again dives into the world of Greek mythology to present us with another example of an ancient story with women being placed at the foreground. ⁣ ⁣ Elektra focuses on three different women all affected and connected in some way by a bloodline curse. We have Clytemnestra, whose sister Helen sparks the beginning of Trojan war when she is taken by Paris. Her husband Agamemnon raises an army and he is determined to win, no matter what the cost. Then there is Cassandra, a Trojan princess and cursed by Apollo to see the future but to not be believed. Finally, there is Elektra, daughter of Clytemnestra who abhors the violence in her family but seems destined to travel down the same path.⁣ ⁣ Like Ariadne, it was wonderful to read about strong female characters in a world that treated them unkindly. All of the women were beautifully unique and I loved that each had their own story to tell. The author manages to create a narrative that is compelling, hugely enjoyable and thought provoking and it was easy to race through the pages, thoroughly appreciating every moment I spent inside this fascinating world. ⁣ ⁣ Did I enjoy Elektra as much as I did Ariadne? Not quite but it was still a wonderful, immersive read and I’d highly recommend it to fans of the genre. I buddy read it with bestie @keeperofpages and it kept us thoroughly entertained with lots of opportunities for discussion. If I were trying together you to read Cupids & Chaos and Vows & Villainy based on the aesthetic in the photo, I'd epically fail. The Pisces by Melissa Broder

"I'd heard it said that when you're feeling good is sometimes when you're the most suicidal. Maybe it's after you decide that you're going to do it that you suddenly feel happier".

" Were my incessant thoughts and feelings just a mechanism to escape the nothingness, or was the nothingness comprised of my thoughts and feelings themselves?"

I thoroughly enjoyed Broder's writing. It was dark, funny, full of cynicism and existential dread.

A fairy tale targeted to adults. It showed an imperfect character, Lucy, who struggles with her mental health, doesn't believe in love, is afraid of intimacy and her attempt to fill her void leads her to fall in love with a mythical creature, a merman.

I didn't enjoy the smut scenes. They didn't feel sexy at all to me and I love fish. I loove them, even smelling them 🐠

I felt that the smut scenes were permeated by a darkness (and not the good, useful one) and that they served to show the decline of Lucy's mental health.

I will read more of Broder's books as I loved her humour. A weird, funny, fishy novel. 🦑Make of this what you will.

Jan 29th, 2020|| 🌿bookish thoughts on The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern🌿 . this truly didn't work for me. yes, Morgenstern can write, but that's about it.... this book is gorgeous on the outside but is lacking in the inside and a beautiful writing can't really disguise how completely wanting the story is. . it’s not only that I never connected with any of the characters and didn't give a shit about them, it's that there was zero character/plot development. another aspect that also made my reading experience even more tedious was the interwoven fables/stories alongside the main storyline.... it may work for some readers but in my case it just kept pulling me out of the narrative. . i didn’t hate the book and there wasn’t anything in particular that made me dislike it (hence my giving it 2 stars instead of 1), it's just that i was completely indifferent to it. I recently had a discussion with another bookstagrammer about short stories.

They are a hit and miss for me.

✨Q: What are some of your favourite short story collections?

I've loved Things We say in the dark by Kirsty Logan and would absolutely recommend this to anyone who loves atmospheric, folk, feminist horror. A real gem and I'm excited to read her other books.

Apple and Knife was an interesting collection, with many stories about ghosts and with an overall feeling of creepiness.

Mouthful of Birds was a decent collection, with a few memorable stories and others which were too short and left me unimpressed.

I'm looking forward to reading Foxfire, Wolf skin and other stories of shape shifting women.
