God, reminds me that I wrote a (currently unfinished) fanfic for my Ryuenix AU. The idea was that Karuma has been in the Naruhodo line's possession up until Phoenix and, around after Dual Destinies, he decides that he'd give it back to Asogi's descendant (I named him Gisei Asogi), only for him to be killed and Phoenix to be framed. Apollo had to defend him in court.

In context, before this trial, Ryunosuke being Phoenix's ancestor was NOT common knowledge due to past prejudice he and his family faced in the area he lived in when he was little so his parents decided to ditch the Naruhodo name and became the Wrights, trying their hardest to be accepted in the American society and not mentioning their Japanese heritage (despite how famous Ryunosuke was). I figure that, despite the anti-Japanese sentiment and anti-immigrant were not enacted in Japanifornia as it is irl, there'd still a bit prejudice against Japanese people due to WW2. Because of this, Phoenix has an internalized fear of rejection if he were to out himself as Ryuichi Naruhodo (an unfounded fear in the current state of Japanifornia but still).

So like, in trial, Apollo initally managed to capitalized on the fact that the supposed killer was someone named 'Naruhodo R.' and not Phoenix thus having little to no motive on the case, only for the prosecution (I wrote Simon in the fic) to reveal his birth name, pulling him back as the suspected culprit.

That's as far as I wrote, but I remember the actual killer was Gisei Asogi's Western wife Mina Discree. I forgot her motive but given the pun in her name, I think it has something to do with xenophobia. Or that she viewed the Naruhodo as unworthy of Karuma but has little love for Gisei that's why she killed her husband to implicate Phoenix idk

Afterwards, Phoenix wasn't found guilty and ended up sending Karuma back to the living Asogi family members in order to maintain good relationship between the two. I can see that the Naruhodo-Asogi relationship started to deteriorate after a certain generations, only rekindled recently by Phoenix and Gisei's generation.

There is so much going on, let’s analyze

Phoenix is obviously drunk and the bottle has a magatama on it and I’m not sure what to make of that other than there’s probably a joke there about alcohol and spirits haha double meaning y’know? This also adds to my headcanon that Beanix is recovering from an alcohol addiction and uses grape juice to help. Phoenix holding the bottle like that leads one to assume that he was just drinking straight from the bottle like Gumshoe is doing. How did his tie get around his head. Who did that. Did he?? Did someone else?? Where is he looking? Also he’s gonna hurt his knees sitting like that, like cmon man you already have the back of an elderly man, do you really want the knees too??

Miles is sitting in a way that means he probably wasn’t planning to sit for long or that he got up to sit like that to try and get leverage when grabbing the bottle from Gumshoe. Unlike Phoenix and Gumshoe, Miles is holding a glass and wouldn’t be drinking straight from the bottle like the heathens next to him. He probably hasn’t consumed the level of alcohol that a Phoenix or Gumshoe has because he doesn’t look intoxicated really. He’s probably the designated driver since he’s probably the only one here who can drive (and yes I’m dissing gumshoe’s driving I’m sorry but also idk how Larry’s driving is) Why is his hand on the bottle like that? How do you expect to grab it or stop Gumshoe with your hand under it?? Also how he’s like “HEY WTH?” Is very silly to me.

Gumshoe. Without his shoes. HIS POOR SOCKS AND SHOES?? SOMEONE GET THIS MAN NEW FOOTWEAR LIKE WHAT?? When I saw the FNAF movie and it showed how Mike had a hole in his sock, I referenced this art. His shoes are like the red boots I wore to shreds last year bc I loved them so much and I had to put duct tape on the bottom so that snow and water couldn’t get in (it still did). so yeah. but also heres a snippy (AA4 SPOILERS):

Six years. It’s been six years since Phoenix was disbarred, and the man had become more bitter and cynical. And Miles couldn’t exactly blame him, after everything the man’s been through. 

He was very wary of accepting any sort of help from Miles—the two of them even getting into fights over it. It would be easy for someone from the outside to assume that Phoenix is an entirely changed man, and while that may be what he wants people to think, Miles knows better.

Miles still sees the Phoenix Wright he knew in the little things. In the way he interacts and loves Trucy. In the way he does absolutely anything for her, despite the situation he’s been put in. In the way his eyes lit up when he was helping Miles with cases in Europe, when he put together a missing piece for the case.

In the way he interacts with Maya and Pearl. In the way he goes with Miles when he takes Pess on a walk. In the way he always calls or visits Miles around Christmas time, ensuring Miles wouldn’t go through it alone. 

In the way he still undoubtedly cares for those around him, despite taking different approaches in how he shows it. 

This man is still the Phoenix Wright he once knew, underneath the mask he wears.

This man is still the one he loves.

aa4-1 turnabout trump

alright i finished the first case of aa4 last night!

despite my efforts i think i'm more spoiled for aa4 than i realized, or at least most of the hanging mysteries from the first case are ones i think i already know the answer to. kind of a shame but i don't think there was any way to avoid it. oh well, this case was fun anyway. i think 3-1 is my fave tutorial case still but this one was great even if i embarrassed myself by hitting the wrong button. also after banging my head against the wall through aai for five months it was nice to play a case where i could just use my brain and solve it because all the logic made sense and clues progressed naturally lmfao. i know first case are usually the easiest, but still.

apollo seems fun enough but the real draw of this case for me was FINALLY getting to meet beanix, whose characterization i know to be somewhat controversial lol. i've enjoyed him so far although fandom primed me to expect a weird secretive asshole -- will see if that changes as the game goes on. i missed phoenix a lot playing AAI so i am clinging to his ankles. was very exciting when his musical cue started in court. get his ass nick

the forgery ace stuff is... hm. i'm reserving judgment until i finish the game. also, lmao not to reference AAI for the thousandth time, but the conclusion of its grand finale was "illegal evidence is good sometimes" so i guess we already crossed this moral event horizon.

i've also been eager to meet trucy, who didn't do much in this case but have a bug-eyed stare. one thing i'm glad to be spoiled for actually is trucy and her approximate providence because the game trying to tease that as a mystery would've bugged me so much LOL and it's very funny to play when everyone is like "you have a DAUGHTER?!" and phoenix is just like :) yeah and as the player i am probably meant to be asking all kinds of questions about what happened there when i know the truth is just

i think the biggest hurdle this game is going to have with me personally is the level of suspending disbelief i have to do that maya and edgeworth are just totally uninvolved and unhelpful while phoenix is embroiled in whatever kind of conspiracy plot is going on. on a real-world level this is almost certainly the result of the franchise wanting to pivot to new characters, so there's not much explanation beyond that. but it's a bit hard to rationalize in-universe, especially because i also know the franchise immediately goes "lol lmao nvm" in 5&6 anyway. phoenix said something in this case about needing a lawyer he could trust, in reference to apollo, and i was like yeah if only we... knew one of those....

but whatever i guess. the true gift aa4 will give me is finally being able to read all the 7yg fics i have marked for later on ao3. onwards to 4-2!

So i finished aa3. I cried. I took photos but there's not much to say about them beyond just fucking weeping. But now I'm on aa4 and I have thoughts.

First the sound design is worse by kinda a lot. Maybe I'm just spoiled and maybe it will grow on me but the mix is way way lower and the music is much less of a banger.

I think I like the graphic improvements though. They aren't better, just different but it's a different I like (note im playing on the 3ds port. I think they are better than the remastered of trilogy that I'm playing through on the PS4 with my partner)

The whole game feels a lot darker and seedier. Might just be the first case but I like it. It's a different tone but it works with both Phoenix's mental state and also the dark age of law thing. Again not better just different in a way I like equally as much

I love Apollo. He's great. I really don't have much to say, I just genuinely like him and find him endering as fuck.

I know beanix is polorising but I genuinely really like him. He still feels like phoenix just older and more jaded. You can see he's absolutely delighted to be back in court even if he's the defendant. He clearly missed it. I think if you only see him as dumb Himbo underdog it probably feels weird but that was never him to me. He's bitchy, he's quick witted, he's genuinely smart even if he's the underdog. In 3-5 law prodigy genius Edgeworth ends up doing some of the more Himbo stuff and it's commented on that that's just what the position of defense attorney puts you in in this system. It's not that phoenix wasn't smart. He always was. Hobo phoenix feel like a very natural evolution to me

Edit: the song that just started that might be the new chase theme is indeed a banger. I may just need headphones to fully vibe with the mix

Second edit: that song wasn't the chase theme. I've found the chase theme and it is an INSANE banger. Mix is also growing on me. I don't mind it as much now. Just a change. I'm learning a lot about poker damn. I tried playing once in highschool. We did it before school and beg on pens. I was bad. But yeah this teaching a lot

I cleared Turnabout Corner last night!

It seemed about average length as far as second cases go.  I really enjoyed the second trial day because it had so many great moments.  From Apollo’s perception, to the true culprit’s reveal and then the scene at the end between the Kitakis - undergarment snatching aside, I think this was a good case with a nicely written story and a conclusion that made sense for all the case-specific characters.

Beanix is still a mystery in many ways.  I don’t like how cagey he is but I also recognize that he wasn’t the most open person to begin with in the original trilogy.  To everyone who says his being secretive is because of Dahlia’s betrayal in Trials and Tribulations, I think you’re absolutely right.

I wasn’t sure about Trucy at first but I’ve warmed up to her and so has Apollo.  I pretty much know the spoiler that these two are related but I wonder if it ever comes up in the text or if it remains subtext because they have the same ability.

Klavier, on the other hand surprised me because as early as his introduction case, he started cooperating with Apollo (when Phoenix and Miles had to be under extreme stress in Rise from the Ashes and Farewell, My Turnabout to work together) and they found the truth!  I am a Klapollo believer now.

You know what I miss from the trilogy and the Investigations games though?

The after-case still images.

I haven’t seen any so far.  Maybe one will show up in the third or fourth case?  We’ll see.

Oh boy have I read fic. I read fic before I knew that much about canon, whoops. I already compiled a reclist of Klapollo fics last August, so no recs this time that center Klapollo:

- "with every hateful instrument" by LuckyDiceKirby: if you like asobaro, read this. I love the focus on cyclical relationships and how they work past it.

- "Rest on your oar (and see)" by InfiniteCalm (RATED M - suicide themes + sexual reference): if you're looking for something introspective about Edgeworth, this is the fic for you. set between AA1 and AA2, while Edgeworth's "chosen death".

- "Swan Song" by Rodimiss: Klavier and Blackquill friendship throughout AA5. Love that the work continually acknowledges that their friendship does not mean Klavier automatically believes in Blackquill's innocence, and all the other characters involved.

- "Means to an End" by xtwilightzx: This is the only AU on this list, but I really enjoy this AU's take on Beanix. Edgeworth as protagonist, Narumitsu, spy AU

- "and the tree was happy" by zombiekittiez: THE Apollo & Trucy sibling reveal fic ever.

oh thank you!! ahhh im always so happy when people compliment my beanix, i feel like there's such differing opinions about him. imo the secret to writing good beanix is to remember that he simply does whatever at any time while also being extremely calculating but the calculations don't make sense to anyone but him <3

im hoping to get the next update up next week :') i miss exorcism so much HOUGHhdhsb i haven't written anything in two damn weeks because classes were brutal but you actually caught me on the exact day i was planning to finally pick it up again!! so this is great motivation :]
