I've been making the transition these past few months, but I think I'm gonna just move back to Tumblr. My Twitter's follower-base has reached a point where I can't tweet anything casually opinion-related without it overflowing like a toilet. I post a short thread on my gripes with color design in anime and I'm getting QRT'd with "kill this guy with hammers" reaction gifs. Like, damn, this isn't fun anymore. It's not fun to talk about stuff on Twitter in general anymore. I wanted to post some ship dynamic doodles sometime there, but I know I'm gonna get weirdly aggressive takes and reactions. I swear, I'm literally fuming about how people are just straight up ignorant about this. It's not HARD to just colorpick, and if the color is weird because of the lighting then literally just search any skin tones palette and WOW you have a black skin tone.

There's so many tutorials about how to draw and color black characters on the internet.

At this point I can't even care if black people aren't common in wherever you live, because it's not like you never saw a black person on the internet or in any media.

ok so my idea for a bad batch redesign is. What if the bad batch was actually an experiment on transgenic clone modifications. like. really putting the "experimental" in experimental clone force.

Hunter - Kaleesh genes make his senses sharper, and gives him infrared sensing (and by extension night vision) and stronger hunting instincts - His ears are pointy and taller than normal, but he hides that with his bandana - Has pit organs under his eyes (that's how he senses infrared and electric currents) - His eyes reflect light and have slit pupils - His pinkies work as secondary thumbs

Tech - Kind of a test to see how much of givins' natural affinity for mathematics is genetic and how much is socialized - He's better with maths and has quicker thinking than regular humans - Givin genes make him smaller, pale and bony, so he looks kinda sickly and starved but he's totally normal - The glasses help hide how deep his eyes are - The "balding" look from his original design is now because of his bone structure

Wrecker - Gamorrean genes give him enhanced strength - It also gives him a very strong sense of loyalty, and makes him tend to be stubborn - He's actually a little bit shorter than an average clone, but he's so wide that people think he's taller than he really is - His left canine broke in the same incident where he lost his left eye

Crosshair - Chiss genes give him infrared vision and better reflexes (and red scleras) - Umbaran genes give him ultraviolet vision - He really is just an experiment on expanding the human vision range - He sees infrared better than ultraviolet, and has better night vision than Hunter - His hair is a cool black instead of the usual warm black - He's a bit paler as well but that's because he doesn't like bright places

Thinking about how they decided to bring back the whole "one Gerudo male born every 100 years to be king" bit in TotK for whatever godforsaken reason, thereby creating the question of: why have there been no kings since this Ganondorf?

The flashbacks with Ganondorf took place well over 10,000 years ago, considering the first recorded Calamity took place 10,000 years before BotW. Fast forward 9,900 years ago, and we have the plot important Calamity that leads to BotW. Fast forward 100 more years, and we have Link waking up in the Shrine of Resurrection.

And yet . . . there is not a single Gerudo voe.

The magic law governing the sex of Gerudo babies doesn't specify that the previous king has to have fully died before a new one can be born. We can assume that's usually the case given Gerudo aren't known to live past 100 without magical intervention, but that's not part of it as far as we know. So even though Zombiedorf's crusty ass was hibernating underground, there should have been, what, at least 100 kings after him? There at least should have been one EITHER during the first Calamity, or born around the time Link woke up in the Shrine of Resurrection (with "around the time" including a time frame like a couple decades or so).

But there isn't one, and Gerudo Town is instead led by a chief. And further, men are (usually) not allowed inside.

Which makes me think that, after Ganondorf decides to go full Demon King . . . maybe the Gerudo said, "we're sick of this shit, no kings ever again." In other words, when a boy is born to a Gerudo mother, he is NOT sent back to Gerudo Town when he's old enough to talk, but is instead raised as a Hylian.

If we consider Sonia and Rauru's Hyrule to be Hyrule 3.0 (which it kind of has to be), this is not the first time a Gerudo King has made life worse for his people. In OoT, the Gerudo were regarded as thieves because of IRL racism / colorism lbr and Ganondorf actively made things worse for them by trying to take over Hyrule, having Koume and Kotake brainwash Gerudo who didn't fall in line, etc. In one branch of the timeline, this led to the Gerudo being left to drown in the Great Flood. In another branch (the one that leads to Twilight Princess) we don't see them at all, suggesting that they were perhaps driven from Hyrule's borders after Ganondorf's bs was brought to light and he was put on trial. And then we have the timeline merge and this Ganondorf, who again took them to war and transformed himself into a demon king and just overall fucked over his people. When you consider all of that, along with the fact that we don't have a single good Gerudo King in recorded history . . . it's not too much of a stretch, I think, for the Gerudo women to say "no kings ever again, no men allowed in Gerudo Town aside from Princess Zelda's twink."

And thus, the 100+ sons that would have come after Ganondorf . . . were raised as Hylians.

(Of course, if one of these AMAB Gerudo-raised-as-a-Hylian later realized she was a transgirl, she would be welcome in Gerudo Town. But she wouldn't be there to take the throne. She's just there to be with her sisters. Transvai are vai and welcome in Gerudo Town. Just no voe, except Princess Zelda's twink.)

So if we consider this a possibility, then it could be that there is actually a Gerudo voe—who wouldn't acknowledge himself as Gerudo since he was raised Hylian—in present day Hyrule. Someone with dark skin, tall, with a muscular build, accustomed to warm climates . . .

Someone like Tauro.

So this is not supposed to be a gotcha question because I'm sure you'll have a good response to it, but what of the argument that Wanda and Pietro were white characters for the first 15 years of their history (arguably until VIsion & The Scarlet Witch vol. 2 confirmed Magda)? What gets to me on social media is the frequent statement that they were always Romani, a bit like (though not nearly as bad as) the idea that the Hitler-like Magneto of the 60s/70s should be read as a Holocaust survivor.

Well, I agree that it would be dishonest to claim that they were "always" intended to be Romani characters, because as far as we know, that's simply not the truth. But to that, I raise two points. The first-- so what? They didn't have a fully established backstory in the 60s or for most of the 70s, but the same can be said a lot of other Silver Age characters, including most of the original X-Men cast. So who cares? When the writers finally settled on a concrete backstory, this is what they came up with.

Second, I think the fact that they've existed as such for 40+ years, and that their heritage is an integral part of every iteration of their origin story-- not to mention the fact that it makes them arguably the most prominent Romani characters in the entire superhero genre/American pop culture writ large-- should be enough for people to accept that this is a key aspect of the characters, and it's not going to change. I'm sorry, but if you look at Wanda and Pietro's full 60 year publication history and all you can say is "well, for a small fraction of that time, years before I or most people currently purchasing comics were even born, they were white, so therefore I'm entitled to whitewash them," you're being racist. You just are.

We're talking about representations of a marginalized community, as well as depictions of, and narratives about, the way that community has historically been oppressed. You have to internalize that fact, and, like, have a moral backbone about it.

As for Magneto, I think that when we're reading material that spans decades, as comics do, we have to develop the ability to simultaneously read the text as it was written at the time of publication, AND view it in context of the larger continuity. I agree that it's hard to reconcile Magneto's characterization in the 60s and 70s with the version we know and love today, but you don't necessarily have to. And I have to say, this is a very different situation that I don't think compares at all to Wanda and Pietro. With Magneto, we've two different character treatments that really conflict, but with the twins it's just an absence of information that was eventually expanded upon.

The author is claiming "variety" for Wyll, but it's just egregiously antiblack. Most of the mod white washes Wyll, while the rest removes his blackness to replace it with other identities - which is still extremely antiblack.
