Tonight's delight: Some Kathirikai Kara Kuzhambu from a place we decided to try for the first time, Marias Indian Kitchen.

For some obvious historical reasons, there are a LOT more South Asian restaurants around London than here. You're particularly well set if you want Punjabi or Bengali/Bangladeshi food there, besides your basic vaguely Northern-influenced BIR style. But, there are at least a couple of places here in Malmö offering South Indian stuff, which I was actually more used to getting before moving to the UK. Including this one, which has good reviews and sounded worth a try.

Marias was sadly out of idlis tonight, so I didn't end up getting an order of those. (Which bodes well for their using proper longer-fermented batter, which you can't just whip more of up in a hurry.) So, they unintentionally saved me from double carbing it tonight! I didn't order the dosas, so no idea if they had any of that batter left. Any kind of pancakey thing is so much better fresh out of the pan, that I figured I'd just be disappointed with delivery.

The kuzhambu was obviously catering to local tastes, with both chili levels and rice amounts. But, it was very tasty otherwise. I ended up quickly frying up a couple of slices of halloumi on the side to help balance things out with more protein, since this was all saucy eggplant.

Lyle (voiced by Shawn Mendes) gives Josh a new sense of purpose and we also meet his eccentric owner, Hector P. Valenti and the evil Mr. Grumps, who does all that they can to have Lyle thrown out of the apartment. "The Menu" In total contrast to the previous film, "The Menu" is a horror/thriller, centered around the visit of a young couple to an exclusive restaurant on a remote island where the chef has some rather unpleasant surprises in store. "Matilda-the Musical" Stephen Graham has always struck me as a versatile and talented actor and upon viewing the trailers for "Matilda," I looked forward to seeing him in a musical role. Matilda, played by teenage Dublin actress, Alisha Weir is a boisterous and high-spirited girl with sharp wit and vivid imagination the story, based on the book by Roald Dahl and the stage musical by Tim Minchin follows her stand against her oppressive father and mother (played by Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough) and Emma Thompson's frightening headmistress, Miss Trunchbull. Darlings In this movie, we see Alia Bhat as Badrunnisa, the wife of Hamza Sheikh (Vijay Varma). Darlings is a Hindi-language dark comedy. This film portrays a very common and pathetic social problem. Badrunnisa’s mother helped her daughter to take revenge for his (Hamza) done. Badru even loses her child because of her husband’s domestic violence.Every day, Hamza beats Badru while intoxicated. After losing the kid, Badru swears to get back at Hamza by mistreating him the same manner she has been mistreated over the past several years. Hamza must ultimately deal with his own conscience. One of the recently released films, Darlings, helps us understand how domestic abuse affects women in our culture. In real life, I believe, each victim should take action as Badru does in this movie. The concept was novel, but the method by which it was produced was very standard. The plot wasn't terrible, but it had a lot of shortcomings.The thing I can appreciate is how the locations you guys chose in Vfx and CGI are better than Mission extreme, Shannon, Dhaka attack, And more many Bangla Movies Vfx but still Mediocre Siam Acting in this one seems. Tahsin was the best in this one. His acting was so good. He needed more screen time. But unfortunately, he didn't get that much. Other characters also pretty much have OK acting, but Tahsin Was the best in this one. Dont punish people for the sake of punishing Russia

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that no country should be “controlled or punished” by imposing sanctions as has been the case of Western sanctions against Russia, due to which people around the world are suffering. “Commodity prices have gone up due to the sanctions imposed by the US and other countries against Russia. It should be reviewed if the country that faces sanctions is actually being punished,” she said. For all latest news, follow The Daily Star’s Google News channel. “When people suffer because of serious disruptions in commodity supply and rising prices, including fuel and fertiliser, this is also violations of human rights,” Hasina said. She was addressing the inaugural of the new eight-storey building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as chief guest, being virtually connected from her official residence Gono Bhaban today (July 7, 2022). Commodity prices across the world have skyrocketed since the Russia-Ukraine war and the subsequent sanctions against Russia, as global supply chains are being seriously hampered. The UN has warned of global food shortage. Prime Minister Hasina said that US needs to reconsider the sanctions imposed against Russia, adding that people should not be punished for the sake of punishing a particular country. She also spoke about the Rohingya crisis, saying that this has become a huge burden for Bangladesh to continue supporting the more than a million Rohingya. She called for the developed countries and international agencies to come forward and facilitate the Rohingya repatriation at the soonest. At the foreign ministry event, Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen conferred the “Bangabandhu Medal for Diplomatic Excellence” to Bangladesh Ambassador to Poland, Sultana Laila Hossain, and Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh, Ito Naoki, on behalf of Prime Minister Hasina. Sultana Laila Hossain has made extraordinary contribution during the Russia-Ukraine war for providing life-saving services to the Bangladeshis who left Ukraine and took shelter in Poland and other European countries. She was also director general (consular) at the foreign ministry during the Libya crisis in 2011 when about 40,000 Bangladeshis returned home. Ito Naoki joined the event virtually from Osaka. On his behalf, Japanese Embassy Charge De Affairs Hiroyuki Yamaya received the medal. Bangladesh-Japan relations have flourished, especially in the recent years, with Japan supporting building of some critical mega projects including Metro Rail, Araihazar Economic Zone, Payra Port, Third Terminal of Dhaka Airport. hii okay most of these, if not all, are ya/contemporary but here's all that i know-

ayesha at last by uzma jallaludin is one of my favourite books. its a pride and prejudice retelling w muslim characters set in canada. it's not particularly exemplary but its one of my comfort reads <3. the author also has another book called hana khan carries on which is a retelling you've got mail, with two rival food businesses competing on the same street, an anonymous podcast and (mild spoilers ahead) a taylor swift flash mob <3

hani and ishu's guide to fake dating by adiba jaigirdar is also one of my favourite books, about hamaira khan who comes out as bisexual to her friends, who tell her it can't be because she's never dated a girl, so she tells them she's with the only other indian in school, ishita dey. its warm and soft and the book equivalent of a hug. the author also has the henna wars about nishat who is struggling to get her family to accept her as a lesbian. a side plot includes a rivals to lovers and a school competition she's trying to win. adiba also has a new book coming out sometime this year called a million to one but i don't know much of what it's about, other than that its a sapphic heist in the titanic.

the love and lies of rukhsana ali by sabina khan isn't a book i like very much, but i'm adding it anyway. it's about a sapphic muslim bangladeshi girl who was caught kissing her girlfriend by her parents and then flown to bangladesh, where a flurry of escapes and arranged marriages follow. it was a bit too dramatic and unrealistic for me, but the author wrote it inspired after her own daughter came out to her, so i'll let you decide whether you want to read it.

a very large expanse of sea by tahereh mafi is about a muslim girl in america a year after the events of 9/11. it's a high school love story and kind of cliche, but it's good nevertheless. tahereh mafi is more widely known for her series shatter me but i haven't read it so i can't recommend it.

counting down with you by tashie bhuiyan is one of my friend's favourite books ever and is about a ya contemporary novel about a bangladeshi-american girl who gets the courage to finally tell her parents she wants to become a humanities student and not a science one (the quintessential desi coming of age moment) side plot features a fake dating scheme going on with the resident Bad Boy™ of the school while her parents fly back to bangladesh for a month. it has loads of anxiety representation and a dadu i would die for, although the muslim representation reviews are mixed, so i will let you decide.

famous on booktok for a while, but i'll still recommend we hunt the flame by hafsah faizal which is a fantasy duology set in the fantasy equivalent of arabia, which features a group of people on quests to uncover lost artifacts in an island nobody can access. i've read the first book and i'm yet to read the second but i will recommend it, although i find it slightly above average. something i do want to point out is that the main character, zafira has a widow's peak, which is something that endeared me to her a lot, bc of how rare it is to find in young adults fiction. the author also has another series coming out this year called a tempest of tea which i'm more excited for.

the family tree by sairish hussain is a book that didn't hit me at all but almost all of my friends loved this book dearly, so i guess it's just a me thing. it follows a british muslim family over the course of around 30ish years, amjad's wife dies, leaving him to take care of both their children. several years later, saahil and ehsaan are celebrating graduating university when they run into an accident that changes their lives forever. several years after that its up to zahra to bring the family back together.

ace of spades by faridah abiké-iyímídé is about the only two Black students in a rich all white academy, and a secret texted who calls themselves 'ace', who threatens to spill their secrets to the entire school. its a very compelling thriller and i read the entire second half in one go, not being able to take my eyes off the page for a second, would recommend v much.

Book Review #10 of 2021-

Counting Down with You by Tashie Bhuiyan. Rating: 4 Stars.

Read from February 7 to 9.

Before I get into the bulk of my review, I want to thank NetGalley and the publishers at Inkyard Press for giving me an ARC of this one in exchange for an honest review. Counting Down with You is a hard hitting contemporary novel about a girl from a conservative Bangladeshi Muslim family who struggles to fit into the box her parents want her in, but when they go back home to visit family, Karina Ahmed finds freedom in tutoring resident bad boy Ace Clyde. In a strange turn of events, she also finds herself being his fake girlfriend. But when Ace is actually a good fake boyfriend, Karina has to wonder if there’s not something more there. Counting Down with You comes out on May 4th and is available for preorder now.

There were so many things for me to enjoy about this novel. Fake dating? Check. Sarcastic, realistic, humorous main characters? Check. A kind love interest and a likable main character? Check. But there are two things that I think really make this book shine: 1) the modern story telling is amazing, all of these teenagers feel true to the Gen Z people I know in my life, and 2) the way the author poses the questions of family, expectations, and unconditional love. The teenagers in this novel feel true to actual teenagers. It’s not one of those novels where you have to question if the author remembers what it was like to be a teenager. And there were a ton of references to jokes and memes that I’ve seen across the Internet which is fun. It’s supposed to be modern, present day and it definitely feels that way. But the thing that made the biggest impact on me, especially in the back half of this novel, is the questions Karina had to face in her relationship with her parents. Being a white girl from the middle of nowhere Oklahoma, I have no experience with the kind of pressure and conditional love that Karina gets from her family and from her culture, but the way the author handles it is so beautifully done. I swear I cried for the last 75 pages of this novel (not always sad tears!). There are also some really wonderful moments between Karina and Ace discussing privilege and entitlement.

I think that there was a lot to enjoy with this romance. Ace is supposed to be the bad boy of their school because he cuts classes, wears a leather jacket and rings, and has a tattoo. But there’s a lot about him that the school doesn’t know so it was great to see Karina learn more about him and to watch her fall in love with him. I enjoy their banter and their love for sweet foods (me too, guys, me too). But I think the thing that I thought was most refreshing about their relationship was their ability to show how they feel about each other while still respecting each other’s boundaries. These aren’t even things that have anything to do with the physical aspects of their relationship. But they have healthy boundaries in their every day lives and it was great to see her put them up and him respect them. The example I’m thinking of is when he drops by her house unannounced and she tells him he can’t do that, especially when her parents get back from their trip.

There were some moments of this one where the writing felt--not immature but underdeveloped. I think this being the author’s debut novel makes it more expected. The author is pretty young if I remember correctly so I know that her work is just going to keep getting better from here. I can’t wait to see what she comes out with next.
