It's not a dino thing, but this ark thing reminds me of the antipathy I have for Jean M. Auel's Clan of the Cave Bear series, which is just *screaming biting maiming and throwing up*
I'm a paleoanthropologist and prehistoric archaeologist and it just makes me furious. The worst part is if you look the books up, they say 'thoughtfully researched.' She's an erotica author who visited Altamira and then wrote her books.
Also, she characters are neanderthals (what's happening in the books would have to be ~90kya, though I doubt she knows that), and Altamira is only 30kya
oh I can only imagine how terrible that book series is for you, I'm so sorry. holy shit.

Quote
It is certain that the easy and obvious philosophy will always, with the generality of mankind, have the preference above the accurate and abstruse; and by many will be recommended, not only as more agreeable, but more useful than the other.

If you have something to add to the discussion, put it in a reblog.
And if you're making, or even backing up, an accusation, put your evidence in that reblog.
I will repeat this for the people in the back. Commenting in the tags was invented as a tradition back when the alert system on tumblr was very, very annoying. That has changed, it's now just tradition, and should be used where appropriate.
You can use it for dittos and attaboys and 'OMG I can't evens' and the like, but if you're trying to actually contribute to the conversation at hand, particularly if it's a serious issue, REBLOG like an adult.
I saw this on the recent Palworld thead:
Tumblr media
None of these accusations is supported or sourced, and I've made a separate post to explain why in depth on deepdreamnights. But what's relevant here is if you say something like this, you should be linking to your evidence, or at the very least making it a proper reblog so it can be involved in the discussion.
Tumblr media
It is your responsibility to check the veracity of claims that you pass on to others.
Really read over that post and then think back to John Green.
Or, just, you know, any moral panic in goddamn history.
Passing on rumors of wrongdoing, particularly when you "have no knowledge" of the situation, is irresponsible and potentially dangerous behavior. There's this attitude that if the issue is serious enough that the safeguards can be taken off and alarm bells rung. But that's backwards. The more serious the issue, the more effort should be put to verifying them correctly.
If you consider plagiarism a deeply important issue, then you should be more careful, not less, when passing on accusations of it. Doing otherwise isn't just a mistake, it's an ethical failing.

Re: I don't care if it's a fictional game that says it's fictonal
It's important because Ark doesn't say WHICH PARTS are fictional, and there's no way to know at a glance. They used creatures that most people wouldn't know as a shortcut to avoid doing research. (Can't get called out on inaccuracies if nobody knows the creatures to begin with. *thinking black man meme*)
And while I *do* think that there should be some leeway for fiction, it's a very situational thing. PaleoPines, for example, is also inaccurate, but because it's got a very cartoony style, I don't think anyone is *expecting* accuracy. Ark, on the other hand, has a more realistic style, and people--whether they realize it or not--are going to assume a higher level of realism in the creatures and the way they're depicted. (Or, for a cinematic example, nobody is going to be assuming accuracy from the Land Before Time movies the way they'll be assuming it in the JP movies.)
yes to all of this. Like I can wave away inaccuracies in some things, but if it has the reach and ambiguity ark does, I really really can't. this is also why jurassic world is on my shit list. at least JP tried a little for the time.
though the top of said shit list are all inaccurate documentaries about dinosaurs (ones that go out of their way to be wrong). if I could burn said terrible docs in a fire, I would. I can't, and I don't believe in burning any knowledge, and we need to keep them around so people know how bad they were, but like. man I wish I could have a nice bonfire filled with copies of "Clash of the Dinosaurs"
