The people who do well on the test go to the best schools. That's why we let them in to the best schools.
This is the 3rd time I've seen someone who makes YouTube videos go mad trying to second guess "the algorithm."
YouTube provides creators with a firehose of data: How long people watch, when they stop watching, the distribution of views. YouTube also sometimes selects videos using a secret, unknowable algorithm to be "promoted." For small and medium creators this is a huge deal and the difference between 500 views and 500,000 views.
For self-critical analytical minds it's a toxic combination. Think of it this way: You have all this data to help you improve your videos, if the data meets certain criteria your video gets seen. Your video matters. For those who are trying to make a living making videos it's critical.
But, you don't know what those criteria are. Some of your videos get 100,000s of views some get only 100s. The Algorithm decides. The worst kind of boss or parent is the inconsistent, unpredictable boss who inflicts punishment or anger seemingly at random-- all making you think you ought to be able to figure out why it's happening. You keep struggling to please them, to meet their unspoken formless criteria for success. Improve your thumbnails! (by adding exaggerated faces to them) Avoid these colors. Don't forget to ask people to like and subscribe! (People really are more likely to like a video if you ask. So, you should ask because likes are a factor in the mysterious algorithm, right?)
It reminds me of standardized testing.
Why say "like and subscribe" ? Because the data from YouTube proves that when people ask they get more likes. Having a lots of likes means a video is going to be popular. If YouTube determines that a video "will" be popular then YouTube promotes the video *making* it popular. Ouroboros!
(The people who do well on this test go to the best schools. That's why we let them in to the best schools.)
It's enough to make a person crazy. Once again I'm seeing a creator I like as a person, someone who cares about science get obsessed and maybe a little delusional about little blips and kinks in the watch-time graphs for his videos.
You see suddenly "the algorithm" hasn't been boosting his videos like before. He didn't change anything the views just dropped off. And so he's looking for a reason. He is blaming himself. But... it might not be anything rational. They change the algorithm all the time. My advice is to avoid depending on YouTube (if you have the option.) It's not a good work environment.
I hope that this guy comes out of it. I'm not kidding when I've said it's driven other people mad. Like they had to get therapy because of it... which sounds funny ... until you think about what it would really be like.
Thanks for letting me share about this. It's weighing on me today--

Remembering that time I was an administrative assistant in an office with a manager who relied on and looked down upon admins daily.
Her name was Arlene.
She decided to fire someone. She did not give any of the admins advance notice. She fired them the day her admin (Mel) was out of the office.
Planned PTO to watch her son compete in his college tournament.
Mel was the only one who knew how to change the door codes.
Arlene comes to me. I explain that Mel’s the only one who can do it. Arlene says “well, it needs to be done TODAY.” *stares*
(My autistic ass *stares* back) (I already told you Mel’s the only one who can do it)
Long story short: I waved to Arlene and my boss on my way out the door, Arlene calls me back and asks if I’ve removed fired employee’s door code, I tell her no because Mel’s the only one who can do it, and then I leave. I was hourly and not approved for overtime.
An hour later, my phone starts ringing. Arlene has decided that the office cannot be unattended until the door code is removed. She leaves an aggressive voicemail informing me that she and the supervisors are stuck until I resolve the situation.
Supervisors also start leaving me voicemails.
Mel calls me, panicking. I think about the situation long and hard for a few minutes and then decide I’m turning off my phone and advise her to do the same.
OH I forgot to say this was a Friday.
**fast forward**
They figure out some workaround and then Arlene insists that we have redundancy for all tasks - something we had put in our training plan and she had removed. Cool.
She insists that only two people in the office be able to access and change alarm codes: herself, and me.
She teaches me.
She has a terrible memory and is incredibly incapable.
For two years, I’m the only person handling the alarm.
And then…they eliminated my position.
My (lovely) boss asked me to send an email with the details of who would be taking over each of my responsibilities before I signed off for the last time.
I made sure each and every admin was set up for success.
I emailed my boss. My closing line was “that’s everything except the alarm code. Arlene knows how to do that. Don’t forget to remove me as the first person who gets a phone call when the alarm is triggered.”

What if I just want to yell about bad employers, scream at uncaring corporations, dream of fixing exorbitant rent prices, and cry about a negligent government?
What then

I think I am allergic to my current job. Like literally. Since I started working there my back is super itchy and sometimes my hands too, no matter how often I shower. And it drives me mad.
Thing is I am allergic against dust mites and some metals. And guess what’s very present at this work place... dust and metal products (tho we worker have to sweep our stations at the end of the shift . but it is very ineffective since the tools we get look like they are leftovers from before ww2). The metal parts we have to package wouldn’t even be such a problem (we wear gloves) BUT they are fresh from the factory. Means there’s a lot of metal dust, splinters and crumbs on them / in the boxes which flies around and mixes to the regular dirt.
Besides the fact that this kind of jobs (no mental stimulation / challenge, working alone, doing the same simple tasks for 8h) is so very bad for my mental health. Even if I can listen to music or podcasts the whole day. It makes me spiral into depression or anxiety at least once per day.
Memo to myself to intensify the job hunt.
but the issue is, after work days my serotonin batteries are so empty (as if they were full before lol), I have to fill it first, before I can engage into another very mentally draining process like job hunts or even job interviews..... this is a doom loop. Also I am still in burnout.

kinda yucky seeing my old ranch job posting job openings and wishing I could warn potential employees about the horrible abusive atmosphere because of that one guy who I know is still there. I'd hate for other people to go through what I did. But all the rich horse ladies are commenting 'omg this is my trainer! this is a wonderful place to work <3'. B*tch did you spend 2 years getting bullied and psychologically tortured daily by the grounds manager while all your complaints to the owners (and eventually breakdowns) were brushed off or ignored? I don't think so. And the owner is such a nice person otherwise and the stables are nice for the riders and horses, but I wouldn't wish working there on my worst enemy. Not to mention they scam you for their taxes by reporting all their employees as 'contractors,' which they aren't. Who really wants to get paid $9 an hour after taxes to get treated like shit while doing a high risk job??? ANY TAKERS??? But I can't say any of that because I'm still in the industry and nobody wants to hear it. Hell I tried to expose some white supremacists in the industry a few months ago and the 'progressive' source that interviewed me just cut that bit. Shit is toxic.

Holy shit….that’s…horrible. Like seriously!
Tumblr media
How dare they treat you so badly! Stuff like that really pisses me off! I’d have left too! No wonder you can’t go back there; that was totally uncalled for!
But on the other hand, at least you were introduced to my universe. And then that means I got to meet you because of that! So that’s definitely good! Wow. So there really is a bright side to everything.

I think one of the biggest tragedies of Laios & Falin and their relationship is how much his actions impact her life. But like. Specifically how much they WOULDN’T impact her life as much if they weren’t both stuck in such a shitty abusive situation.
This part of the Falin-tries-makeup daydream hour comic is what got me thinking about it again because truly it just... it seems like such a like an offhand comment that I'm sure Laios didn't mean to be cruel or anything. That's just like. A little kid not thinking about what they are saying. ESPECIALLY when the kid in question is Laios.
Tumblr media
But man they depended on each other SO much as kids. Too much. It really feels like they didn't have any other source of positive reinforcement, or anyone else to share themselves with. So of course an offhand comment like that has a huge impact on Falin.
Or this little bit from one of the flashbacks:
Tumblr media
This tears me apart. Do you think it tears him apart to think about? I think it does. I think Laios holds every small failure to care for Falin against himself.
Tumblr media
And then there's the Bigger stuff. The way that him coping with his own trauma ended up impacting her.
Like his interest in monsters. Like him going to find a ghost, and accidentally revealing Falin's magic to the whole village in the process.
Like him needing to leave. And leaving her behind.
He shaped her life so much, and he carries so much guilt for it. And again, there should have been other people there to help. The same things that made Laios need to leave home are the things that made his leaving so hard on Falin. She ate alone after that. She shouldn't have had to eat alone just because Laios wasn't there.
She was 9 when he left for school, and he was 11.
Tumblr media
Nine. And Laios feels like he failed her because he didn't stand by her through this better. As an eleven year old.
Tumblr media
Both of these kids deserved so much better from the world.
