My baby daughter got her adorable puffin-print dress absolutely CAKED in mud crawling around the yard and my first thought was "oh no her beautiful dress"

And my second thought was "oh huh it really WOULD be easy to unconsciously steer her away from playing in the dirt. Unlike my son, whose outfits are usually some kind of solid dark easily washed pants plus a shirt that doesn't trail in the dirt like a dress does."

Anyway something something gender roles start getting shoved on kids from literal birth, but with a little time to think about things, YOU TOO can let your children of any gender absolutely destroy their clothes in the dirt pit they're digging in your garden

#all clothes provided through hand me downs and grandparents #we asked for non strongly gendered or branded things and that mostly worked for firstborn boy #but baby girl has gotten nothing but the cutest little dresses #that I am absolutely not going to stress if she destroys because it's not like they'll last until next summer anyway #at which point she'll be big enough for her brother's dirt-compatible pants #now if we can get her to stop EATING the dirt that would be GRAND #her pronouns are om/nom #literal definition of a baby

so one of the things I was vaguely aware of before reproducing was that people hold a lot of anxiety around the gender of babies and 'wrongly' gendering babies (i.e. failing to guess correctly based on their clothes and appearance what their genital configuration is) and having now had a baby: wow, yes, they really do.

I take an extremely laissez-faire approach to baby clothes because like, they are constantly being thrown up on and grown out of and so on, what matters is that they are clean and easy to put on and I am not spending $$$$$ on them. as long as the colour/design is not directly offensive, it's fine. what this means is that people are quite frequently 'misgendering' the baby and then falling over themselves to apologise about it.

and, like, I haven't even had a chance to dress him in anything pink yet; this is based on rules I didn't expect like 'anything with flowers or sparkly bits on it is for girls only'. equally, I do not care when this happens because it's an irrelevancy, but THEY care to make sure I am not offended. so I have started telling them "look, he's only [x] months old; his gender is baby."

and you know what? you'd be surprised how many otherwise average heterosexual people process this and go "huh, yeah, I guess it is." there is a tiny amount of hope for the future after all.

bc piloting the technology needed to make a test tube baby in the first place is a years long endeavor, kushina jr isn't born until tori and itachi are approaching or already 30. this is fairly late for the setting to marry and have kids (but not like remarkably late, bc a lot of ninja start transitioning to more desk work by 30 which makes having a family easier). itachi and tori date on and off from like 15 to 20, at which point they're kind of like "yeah i guess we're sticking with this."

what this means is that they've been together "seriously" ~10 years and tori has been actively working on her slightly illegal test tube baby for at least like 5. so mikoto has had time to come around to tori (who isn't really her ideal daughter in law in terms or personality but is, you know, sufficiently well accomplished professionally and also has the ability to put up with itachi) and then also come around to the idea of a test tube baby. i know some people are freaked out by the idea of a baby being conceived via test tube, but i can't really see a ninja being too bothered by it...? like it's more illegal in that it has the potential to be used for shit like bloodline theft than the moral conundrum of work on human tissue without IRB review and approval.

so mikoto is slightly dubious of the test tube part but she's not overly bothered by it, and also kushina jr is very cute and talented and loves attention from their grandparents, and also maybe tori just casually screened her embryos to lower the risk of the baby inheriting itachi's lung problems. mikoto is pleased by all these things. itachi and tori both forgot about gendering their baby so mikoto gets to buy all sorts of cute outfits for boys AND girls...!!

I need a place to scream about my crafting and this is as good as any.

I have finally got to a point postpartum where my creativity has come roaring back. Which means baby clothes!!!

The top two photos is a Children’s Corner Jamie in the 6 month size, and since my son is a giant it’s already too short on him… he turned 6 months last week.

Also, show of hands, does he look like a girl?

Most people told me he was cute but a loud minority stated that not only did he look like a girl but it was old fashioned and I should dress him in something more modern.

So… since I did a 6 month photoshoot with my daughter in a Mommy made outfit, I took the opportunity to make him a new romper he can wear all summer.

Bottom two photos show the Easy Baby Romper from Sew Crafty Me in the 6-12 month size. Just needs crotch and shoulder snaps and it’s done. I may embroider something on the front, or just make him another one with some embellishments.

The butterfly fabric will be a Sydney Pinafore Dress from Welcome to the Mouse House for big sister.

It’s nice to have the itch to stitch again.
