Hi I've been devouring all your alerudy works and THEY'RE SOOOOO GOOD! Thank you for bringing them all to life. I don't know if you're viet or not but seeing that "cục vàng" in the pet names post gave me whiplash in all the best ways lol. Anyway if you're cool with it could I request one with vietnamese!reader taking alerudy to a trip and showing them off all the sights while spoiling them with food and pet names? Thanks a ton!
Hey there! I'm not Vietnamese, so I don't know anything about Vietnam, sorry about that ^^; I did some research, though, so I hope what I wrote is still alright!
AleRudy with a Vietnamese!S/O
I feel as though the two of them would especially love to go to one of the more natural places Vietnam has to offer. From the Hoàng Liên Son Mountains to the Detian Waterfall, they’d love anything nature has to offer. There may be some greenery in Mexico, but there are still a lot of deserts as well. Therefore they’d love to go to places like the Ninh Binh Province. Naturally, they’ll also visit some cities with you, they do wanna try all kinds of foods, after all. Neither of them are very picky when it comes to food, but they would prefer something a bit more spicy. It’s what they’re used to from home. They’d probably like bún bò huế quite a bit, if prepared correctly, but they’d also be pretty fond of something along the lines of pho. It doesn’t have to be extravagant in their eyes, something simple will do just fine as long as you recommend it to them. Although neither of them speak Vietnamese, Rodolfo especially would love to just listen to you talk to the locals. There’s something so enchanting to him about hearing you speak Vietnamese. Alejandro would sometimes need to snap him out of his trance to show him something like the Temple of Literature. Although the three of you would spend a lot of time wandering around the cities, you would likely also just spend a day at the beach. That’s about the best time you could teach them some basic phrases. Even if it may seem like they’re listening intently to you, the both of them are yearning for the water. Alejandro may even get a watergun from somewhere to spritz the both of you into going into the water with him. If you’re shorter than them then expect them to pick you up and throw you around in the water. If you’re taller, then Alejandro will dunk you. Rodolfo would tell him to stop, but that won’t stop him from laughing a bit as you fight Alejandro in the water to get back at him.
During the evenings where the three of you get ready for bed, you can try to speak Vietnamese with them. Rodolfo will try to translate your sentences with a guide he picked up from somewhere, while Alejandro will simply retaliate with some Spanish. You wanna have a language fight, amor? Gladly. He won’t be mean, he’ll just tell you how gorgeous and cute you are, how nice it is to get to know your culture better now. Call him “gấu chó” and explain to him what it means and he might actually just start play fighting with you. Rodolfo would try to get you to be more quiet before the three of you get into trouble. But then you hit him with a good old “người thương” and he goes quiet. Again, you’d have to explain what you mean since they don’t know any Vietnamese at all. But once you do, he’ll give you a shy smile before bopping you lightly on the cheek. How dare you be this cute. And this continues all night. “Chó con” gets you a “cielo”, “mèo con” gets you a little “corazón”. This little war of yours you got going on continues until one of you runs out of terms of endearment. Rodolfo will have kissed you both good night by then and will have gone to bed, he needs the energy for the next day, after all. The loser among the both of you has to buy the winner dinner the next day. Either way, it doesn’t bother you. After all, what’s more lovely than getting to share your culture with your partners? At some point, either of you just gives up and you just snuggle up to Rodolfo, trapping him between the both of you. After all, you still have quite a few days of adventuring through Vietnam left.

nostalgic food
i’ll want to reference this in the future
Tumblr media
gỏi cuốn (spring roll with chicken, egg, rice noodle, carrot, lettuce, avocado)
Tumblr media
peanut sauce is just peanut butter+water, hoisin+sriracha sauce, and a tiny bit of sesame oil (tastes good with almost anything imo)
Tumblr media
yellow curry
rice noodle with chicken, potatoes, yams, onions, carrots in a creamy coconut milk and yellow curry paste broth
lemon juice and salt mix with garlic chili for dipping
Tumblr media
bò kho (vietnamese beef stew)
kho is a cooking technique where a protein is braised in a mixture of fish sauce, sugar, and water or coconut juice to make a salty/savory result
bread dips in stew beef/potatoes dip in lime juice/salt/pepper mix
cucumber slices to offset the salty
Tumblr media
xá xíu (cantonese style bbq pork)
the seasoning mix is made of sugar, powdered soy sauce, onion and garlic powder, and spices
the pink color very much freaked out middle schoolers at lunch
Tumblr media
cơm tấm (broken rice, grilled pork, egg, pickled carrots/daikon with scallions/oil garnish and fish sauce)
Tumblr media
bún bò huế (thick round rice noodle with beef soup)
more "fun" than phở imo
bún bò broth: spicy salty flavor (lemongrass, spicy chili, fermented shrimp paste, fish sauce)
phở broth: earthy sweet flavor (cinnamon, star anise, onion, ginger, garlic, herbs)
Tumblr media
bánh mì (baguette sandwich with chả lụa (pork sausage), xá xíu (cantonese style bbq pork) coriander leaf (cilantro), cucumber, pickled carrots, and pickled daikon combined with pâté and buttery mayonnaise)
Tumblr media
salmon instead of nem nướng̣ (viet grilled pork) with bánh hỏi (rice vermicelli)
feat nori (dried edible seaweed)
wrapped with lettuce and dipped in nước mắm (fish sauce)
Tumblr media
bánh cuốn (rice noodle rolls filled with ground meat, wood ear mushrooms, onions)
topped with chả lụa (pork sausage) and fried red onions and nước mắm (fermented salted fish sauce)
a fav of grandpa's
pizza man mispronounces it as "bun goo" which makes my mom giggle cause the way he says goo sounds like penis
Tumblr media
bánh tét (glutinous rice rolled in a banana leaf into a thick, log-like cylindrical shape, with a mung bean and pork filling)
Tumblr media
bánh rán (deep fried sesame ball filled with mung bean)
Tumblr media
bánh da lợn "pig skin cake" (tapioca starch, rice flour, mung bean, taro, coconut milk)
Tumblr media
bánh bột chiên (fried taro rice cake, a fav of pizza man)
Tumblr media
phở (broth: earthy sweet flavor- cinnamon, star anise, onion, ginger, garlic, herbs)
ive called phở mid but while eating this i was like huh this is good actually then my dad says this time he simmered chicken bones for hours like he's supposed to instead of using canned broth
Tumblr media
improvised bún thịt nướng (rice noodle bowl with chopped grilled pork, egg roll, veggies, crushed peanuts, fish sauce)
a way to deal with leftover noodles from gỏi cuốn
every time i eat this i think of the time me and pizza man were in new orleans and he asked if i wanted to eat at a viet place and i was surprised cause he's not really into a lot of viet food but anyway i got bún thịt nướng
Tumblr media
thịt kho (pork with eggs braised in sticky savory caramel of sugar, fish sauce, coconut water)
i have distinct flashbacks of being in the middle school cafeteria with my thịt kho and kids around me going "what is that??", "ewwww" lol
Tumblr media
cháo (rice porridge with chicken or a white meat fish- often served with crunchy cabbage salad)
my dad likes it with youtiao (chinese donuts)
being sick means eating this! but we also eat it a lot when we’re not sick!
when my mom was young she would say yes to any dude that asked her out and order an obscene amount of food/the most expensive things on the menu and never hear from them again but my dad took her to a cháo place cause that was his favorite but apparently for cheapskates
he proposed two weeks later and she said yes
my mom is such a menace i wanna be just like her

Every Meal is Shared With You Now and Forever
Bún Bò Huế at Tương Lai (Cabramatta) | 1 August
It's nothing new under the sun to write about how love and food are entwined. How preparing a meal, the deliberate act of taking someone to a restaurant that you enjoy, the times when the scent of a familiar flavour sends you into a wave of emotions... A humanity that has been forever. It's what really made me want to start writing more, although I fear reproducing half-baked diaspora musings. But maybe that's why I do want to record it, precisely because of its eternal and intrinsic nature that transcends time and fuses communities together.
My grandma passed away on Sunday, and food has not tasted the same since. She was my third parent, and my constant. Until the last day that she could stand she would cook lunch and dinner for everyone. After school and work, the first thing that she would ask is whether I was having dinner. Almost without missing a day, she would cook for us. My gut wrenches from remembering the times when I declined and said I would eat later. The times that I've told her I was going out for dinner and her subsequent dejected mood. More than anything, I had declined her act of love. I deserve to feel this terrible, brokenhearted remorse.
She grew up learning to cook with her eyes and her nose. Being the fourth daughter of a Chinese immigrant in British occupied Malaysia, she was prohibited from getting an education by her father. She was basically illiterate, bar the few Chinese characters and basic English words she had to teach herself. I had always considered myself fortunate to be able to indulge in a cuisine many had only later been introduced to. A cuisine that was an almagation of Indian immigrants, Malay locals, many generations of Chinese-Malays and even the influence of British and Portuguese colonisers. She would pound her own spices for curries, cook herbal soups when we came into flu season. So much knowledge through simply absorbing the world around her. Learning the only way she really knew how. I loved her sambal which she would use on a variety of dishes. Nasi lemak. Fried okra. Fried fish. She really loved golden, deep fried delicacies. She introduced me to what Westerners would consider more "challenging" foods. Liver, blood jelly, tripe. I feel so lucky to be able to appreciate these foods. When I had a 2 year vegetarian stint, she would take the effort to cook me a separate dish with no meat. I'm honestly glad I started to eat meat again so I could taste her original cooking before it was too late. I should have known that through her cooking and her hours of preparation, her commitment to make sure we were fed were all intrinsic acts of love. I will never be able to taste it again. I will never be able to repay it.
I ate this bún bò huế after visiting the temple where my family and I have now decided to place her ashes. I had been crying until my eyes had become swollen, and looked bee-stung. I was weepy, still, when they brought this soup noodle out. While it was delicious with its spicy tang and careful notes of fermented seafood, like most of the meals I've had since, it was dampened by the flavour of grief. The thought of being unable to share this with her dulled the usual melody of aromas I would get from that first taste of the soup. If she were with me, I would have asked for a separate little bowl for her to try the silky noodles and bits of Vietnamese ham. Now and until forever, I thought, I could not ever return those acts of care to her. So from that day I promised that every meal is shared with her. I will think of her in every bowl of noodle soup, every bite of curry, even whatever bland work lunch I may have. Tonight is the 7th day since her death, so I poured us a glass of her favourite beer (Guiness) and we served her a little plate of our dinner on the makeshift altar in her room and I feel a little better about it all.

A hidden gem located in 14th Street, New Manila. It's just a small house turned vietnamese restaurant where they only serve two types of Pho & Spring Roll.
📍 Nnăm năm tiêm pho 20
• Bún bò Huế (A rice noodle soup with a rich broth that balances sweet/salty & tangy)

Had to go to Nakano Broadway, which is always chaotic, but we made up for it with a lovely and indulgent Vietnamese meal. Shrimp toast, beef wrapped in betel(?) leaves, bún bò huế (noodles in spicy beef broth), and bánh mì with omelet and grilled pork.
