When I told my mom to stop eating Chick-fil-A for a while, she didn't listen. When I begged her to stop supporting Autism Speaks, she rolled her eyes.
So, I didn't tell my mom about the Isreal boycott.
How could I?
I am gay, I am autistic, and she knew both of these things when I asked her to stop supporting things that would aim to hurt me.
She ignored my request to not eat at Chick-fil-A when it was donating its money to hurt queer people, she refused to listen to me when I gave her evidence of Autism Speaks wanting to hurt autistic people, she even went out of her way to tell me that they were "right"
I still remember the dinner when she told me that "some autistic people have it worse than me" and "some of them really do need a cure" and that that was why autism speaks was good. Remember how pissy she got when I made her take down the baby blue porch light, how long it took her to actually agree to switch lights. (Weeks, maybe even months. At one point she told me to just imagine it was a blue lives matter light instead, which made me feel sick)
If she couldn't stop supporting one place that was hurting her own daughter, how can I expect her to stop supporting a hundred places that are hurting someone she's never even met?
I love my mom, but sometimes I wonder why

HAPPY AUTISM AWARENESS DAY!
Tumblr media
autism is not evil.
autism is not a disease.
autism is not something that can be cured.
autism is not caused by vaccines.
autism should not be ostracized.
autistic people, i love and support you.

As an autistic person, I quote the ‘I am autism’ autism speaks advert frequently. I then go on a spiel about how autism speaks sucks.

Autism speaks has a TikTok account and in the span of around 18 hours or so they had to turn off the comments because the autistic community was clowning on them so much
They didn’t want autism to speak after all :/

As we approach Autism Awareness Month I would like to remind everyone listening of two things. Autism Speaks is an awful charity that does not give a voice to actually autistic individuals, and if elon musk tries to pull any bullshit about people bullying him online because he has asperger’s, you absolutely have this asperger’s-diagnosed person’s permission to tell him to fuck off

No YOU can't cure Autism. I've personally sucked the autism out of hundreds of people and absorbed it all into myself. I've become more powerful than you could possibly imagine.

I feel like this last episode really has been such a big reminder that Jawbone is not in any way trained to be a guidance counselor. Is he amazing at his job yes he’s great he’s helped so many kids but he is not legally qualified, plus there’s the added factor of him only having the job because of a party of students who are currently at the school and his adoptive daughter stepdaughter and the kid whose been living with him for months all go there so he can’t be truly impartial in matters concerning them like he’s supposed to. Do I think he shouldn’t have the job no because he’s amazing at it otherwise but I do think that there should be a second counselor with no connections to any of the students

My stance on Autism Speaks
So yesterday, my mother sent me a photo of a page on the Autism Speaks website. It said that they have removed “finding a cure for autism” from their vocabulary. On the same page they stated that they did not support eugenics.
I went on their page to do more research on what they’re saying now. They have a page addressing their awful (and quite traumatizing) “I Am Autism” video. They apologized for it and apologized to anyone that “was offended”.
So what am I saying here?
I do not support Autism Speaks. I never will. Despite their apologies, they do not acknowledge all their wrongdoings. Even if they did, nothing will be able to make up for it. So, that being said, my stance remains the same:
If you support Autism Speaks, GET OFF MY FUCKING BLOG.

i'm pretty curious about this, since it seems like i hear a lot of similar experiences despite it being oddly specific:
(this is just based on the most common hyper-specific situations ive heard from other autistic people)
ALSO. if you're autistic and you never did any of these things, THAT'S OKAY. please do not become insecure over your own experiences if they don't perfectly match everyone else's- every autistic person is different

Sometimes I find myself thinking about Din Djarin a little too much that I get concerned and think that I really should go to therapy...
Well, I'm finally doing that (again) tomorrow... :)
Feeling pretty nervous about it but hoping that because I now know I'm autistic it will help me understand/explain things a little better! Hopefully this is the start of a journey to finally become a healthier, happier version of myself :)

the way the autistic community went from "having low/no empathy doesn't make you a bad person" to "actually all autistics are hyperempathetic, they just don't express it like neurotypicals!!!!" within the space of a few years :////
