I know this isn’t part of the writer qna thing but I need to ask.

Do you have any advice on how to write interesting characters? What do I need to put in a profile to make them interesting?

I’ll be blunt and honest. 

I see so many people, no matter the fandom, just focusing on character profiles, their appearances and getting their personalities down in those fancy profile sheets which is great, it’s a good resource and reference BUT here’s the thing. 

You need to write them into scenes, even of it’s just a paragraph of something. You need to put them in situations and conflicts because believe it or not, your characters will surprise you. You need to write them to actually get to know them. 

The amount of times I’ve planned scenes out in my head and then when it comes to writing them in the story and realise: ‘wait, this character wouldn’t act like this, I need to change this to fit them’ is surprising. 

A profile is like a photo. You know what they look like, you know their history and personality but you don’t know who they are until you write them.

Writing a character is getting to know them on a personal level. You are after all, putting yourself in their shoes and getting to know them intimately. 

So please, if you are creating characters, write a scene for them, don't just create a sterile cookie cutter profile. Get to know the people you’re creating. If you do, they'll start to feel a little more real and convincing.

TLDR: Writing characters into scenes is far more important to developing them than character profiles. Write them not about them. A profile can't develop or imteract with the story/world you create.

Oooooh this an interesting yet tricky question because I haven't thought about that! :0

But after brewing ideas while I was peeling onions, I did get a few ideas!

Since I made my OCs for fun, I would say she could be one of the featured characters in Anecdotes (it's some sort of story quests unrelated to the main story). Though the 1.4 patch isn't here yet, I will give more info what her story quest might look like!

Oh oh! Also I wrote her 1.4 skin idea!

I rename it as "Athena's Blessing of Wisdom" to make it sound more ✨fancy✨ eheheh

I would draw her rough backstory if I had the motivation, so I hope you can wait, bud 🫸🫷

Witch's Brew was written by @willowandfog for a Halloween writer/artist bang, and I'm listed on AO3 as co-creator because I did the illustration.

Or perhaps you're thinking of Jar of Hearts - in that one Kagome works at Kaede's apothecary as her assistant. I'm still working on that one, but it hasn't been updated in some time. OMG I can't believe it's been that long - I'm sorry, I'm sorry!

My cousin's wife is working from home as an ESL teacher (we are in Europe), teaching Chinese students. The pay is good and as far as I've been told, there is a good amount of demand from the Chinese job market for ESL teachers and, while having a degree in linguistics (foreign languages) or teaching is a plus for an applicant, it's not really demanded. You only need to have a good grasp of the English language and preferably have a document/certificate that proves your English level (either TOEFL or IELTS).

Another suggestion I'd give is learning and mastering a programming language if you manage to land a job as an ESL. Decide whether you want to be a front-end developer (basically developing/designing/maintaining the user interface) or a back-end developer (if you want to bother with maintaining the server side of things) and the area you want to focus on. If you go for web development then, considering your experience with HTML, CSS and Javascript, you could go with Node.js or Django/Flask if you want to learn something new for back-end development and go with React.js for front-end development. Otherwise go for mobile apps development using android studio. It's in very high demand, at least in Europe, but you have to be good at it. Create a good portfolio of programming projects which e.g are useful as a solution for a problem you or someone might have encountered in their daily life if you go for app development, or create user-friendly (this is very important) websites.

As for my last advice, is actually creating an account on Linkedin. You'll be able to connect with various professionals and companies throughout the world , gather information for various topics and see job listings for your preferred field of work, but most importantly, it will serve as a boost to the visibility/exposure of your skills or simply as a CV. It will increase your chances of finding a remote job.

A little question: When are you planning to take commissions?

For the commissions though, I don't have a set date yet, since I'll have to rework what stuff I will and I will not write and up the prices a bit. Thinking $3-$5 with pay how you want from the initial $1 commissions, because needs have changed now. I am planning to take in 3 commissions, since this will be my first time using kofi to take them. I will inform you all when I'll be taking commissions through an announcement post, don't worry!

Who's your favorite character you've written and why?

Oooh this is a good one.

I'd say my favourite is Kamari, the protagonist of Soulweaver. I first thought of her and the concept of Soulweaver about 10 years ago when I was a teen. Since then both the story and characters have changed throughout the years. But being my first creation, Kamari has grown up with me and at this point is much more like an old friend whose story I want to tell rather than a means for moving a plot along.

My least favourite I would say is Tulo. From purely a writing perspective, because I love her character almost as much as Kamari. There are so many layers and complexities to Tulo and her relationships with other characters. She is an incredibly hard character to write, but I think all the best ones are.

Hello! I'm interested in applying for a writer but it's my first time ever doing this and I wanted to know more about what I would have to do as a writer before applying to make sure I would be able to do the best I can.

Thank you so much for asking! Here’s what being an author would entail!

- Regularly checking the discord server for information about deadlines, requirements, and other important info. (This server is also where you will be able to connect with your fellow contributors to brainstorm, get translation help, and even potentially work with artists to have illustrations that correspond to your story created)

- Pitch Phase: May 7th - 14th

This is when you will be coming up with ideas for what you would like to write! Our mods will pick one of your ideas which you will use as your basis for your work!

- Voting Phase: May 14th - May 21st

During this week, you will be able to vote on what charity the zine will be donating all its profits to!

- Creation Phase: May 21st - July 25th

This is when you will write your story! You will submit check ins (short forms where you can ask questions and where you will submit what you have written so far) on June 1st, June 19th, and July 7th, with the final submission being on July 25th! During these check ins, our writing mods will help you catch any spelling or grammar errors and beta read your work.

- Preorder Phase: July 26th - October 23rd

During this phase, the majority of your work is done! You will need to submit a short sample of your finished work that you want featured in promotional posts for the zine, and you may be contacted by the translation teams while they work to translate your fic into other languages. Weekly updates about the zines progress will be posted in the discord so you can keep up with the production!

ugh i'm so glad someone asked this (thanks val) and it sounds really cheesey but just like the amount of friends you can pick up just by posting on ao3

like every single time i try and remember people's ao3 accounts so if they come back i recognise them, especially when it's one after the other, like someone scrolling through all my works in a particular fandom, leaving multiple comments, or coming back to every new post to gush about it - people are always so enthusiastic and sweet and ahdhjhiu its so corny but its so true i love my moots and i'll always want more

Green Arrow! Not because he's a piece of shit who spreads stuff about others but because he just doesn't really know how to fit in. He's often ignored by others, dismissed and feels outcast. Green with Envy shows this best. He gets better though to which I attribute to when I try to remain positive.

People redeeming themselves. Redeeming yourself doesn't always have to be big. Sometimes it's doing small things for others. Sometimes it's being kind to yourself.

As long as you take a step forward, no matter how small the step, you're on the path to better yourself.

I always try to make a point of this, that there's always hope so long as you are willing to search for it.

Hello! Just stopping by with a question about writing XD Do you have any characters who's role grew bigger than you expected? Any surprising changes your characters went through during the writing process?

HEWWO!!!!!

Gosh, that's been happening to me for so long I forget half of the instances. I can say that the love interest for the fantasy project I am not currently working on was originally a fanfic OC who was supposed to die in the first fic I ever wrote him into XD

I've definitely had some of that with the Truth Saga though. Book 2, Bitter Truth, is proving to be full of surprises and character roles are included.

Initially in writing the novel, I intended for the focus to be entirely on Erik and Blade with only brief roles from other characters. It's definitely stayed that way to an extent but with Erik being one of the main characters it actually led to a lot more Lydia than I expected, and Violet is taking a more active step forward recently to the point where I now have to fight her getting her own story before Evie does (whom I've planned for book 3's main character).

Tori has surprised me a lil as well, which I didn't think she was capable of any more but here we are XD While she's already well built and pretty stable in her character, her ongoing condition related to her powers has expanded to a full blown chronic pain/mobility issue which tbh, I should have seen coming given that she's always been my subconscious way of coping with things that make me feel helpless IRL
