I do alot of art and have alot of burnouts due to my adhd- I've been told I'm innovative, clever, and expressive. I can jury-rig your glasses easily with a paperclip if you're screw comes out and loose frames causes the lens to pop. I'm very detail and idea-oriented, i come up with thousands of ideas, questions, and theories. Because of this, I tend to come up with one idea after another without actually going forward with plans and actions because i get so overwhelmed with my massive brain XD

Even tho I'm socially awkward, I love people, I want to make friends. I like being alone a lot but I hate feeling lonely. :C When I get to know you I'm very very chatty; as long as I'm not too tired or piled with heaps of assignments. I would say I'm pretty laid-back and easy to get along with, I get so stuck up in my personal world up in my head that I lose sight of important things around me, I blame the adhd. I'm an observer, I like to watch and see how things happen, I am a very hands on person.

I'm constantly learning, i love science with a passion. I got hyperfixated on evolution of different animal clades a while back. I am immensely curious and focused on understanding how the world operates and functions. I'm looking for mental and intellectual stimulation, lettuce skip casual conversation about wheather- whats your favorite dinosaur? (fuck ignore my dyslexia) and before you say a pterodactyl let me stop you right there- they aren't dinosaurs. if you like understanding the world through learning various things about science, technology, or culture, I'm your guy. but I'm also just a silly hoo hoo aah smart ass.

You see I get what you mean, but for me it's less to do with time and more to do with what they spent the time they had doing. I really don't understand why AT feels the need to shove Shermy and Beth into everything. Also I really don't understand why they thought the best way to make a grown ass 50-something year old man who survived the apocalypse and 1000 years of trauma learn that his relationship wasn't perfect was through a video game. And I really don't understand why the crew thought the best way to showcase this was to literally spell it out to the audience like we are toddlers (especially since F&C is supposed to be for an older audience apparently). I agree with the conclusion, but I really hate how it was executed.

@samhadjblog2 I completely agree with this! I like what the show was going for, again I completely agree with the conclusion it came to, just the way it got to said conclusion was incredebly underwhelming and frustrating for me T_T (also big agree on Simon's main flaw being his insecurities and how passive he was in his relationship with Betty, to a point where he didn't do enough to prevent her from hurting herself)

@wintercandle42 Honestly I'd die for a fic that goes into scenarios I've explored in my own Ice King analysis posts and while I rly appreciate the offer I generally only work with friends or creators I'm already fimilar with! Even so, I rarely collaborate in general T_T. I'm sorry, but ty for offering!

Yes!! I love indie animation (indie anything rly)

Obviously I'm fimilar with the big two (The Amazing Digital Circus Helluva Boss) however my favorite indie animated series are actually The Vampair Series, Threnody and ENA !!! Ofc, I also love watching indie short films or other such shorter animations on YouTube (I actually have a playlist of some of my favorite animations/animatics on YouTube if you wanna check that out)

Oh and I'm following the development of One of The Powerful! It's a series made by only one person, and those ones always impress me so hard. (if you are interested the creator recently made a series development blog on Tumblr! @oneofthepowerful)

Honestly, one-man-team type animated series are super cool to me. Sch Ribbit is another artist/animator who made their own series just out of their sheer passion, and he was always a huge inspiration to me growing up! (an example of stuff they'd make is their Jaden Unshaked series. even though it's scrapped and a bit old, I still find it super cool!!)

But yeah I love indie animation!

@the-rumbybagg-cake I don't play Minecraft and I never watched any Minecraft YouTubers! I also rarely watch gaming YouTubers in general, so nope!

Thank you for asking anon! I've def been doing better lately! Gonna be real, late fall/early winter wasnt the kindest to me (I was sick for a long while and then the seasonal depression hit where I wasn't going outside at all, and till relatively recently I was barely socializing and was just girlrotting in bed all day. A mix of social battery dying out but also generally feeling rly drained), but I do feel a lot better now! I'm getting back on track. Hence why I've finally felt able to answer all the inbox messages lol! But fr ty for asking ;w;!

@cloudbustingss (I assume this ask is refering to this fiasco) Yea you are correct! I know I shouldn't respond to angry randos blowing up at me over nothing, I generally avoid it. I just felt like I needed to in that instance, mostly to make other ppl aware in the fandom that "hey if all it took for this person to blow up and start being transphobic and just generally cruel was a drawing of a GNC cishet couple, they'll likely be even worse if they encounter actual trans art or art made by trans ppl, probably block them if you wanna avoid them doing this to you". But yeah usually I avoid responding to ppl like this, I've been online for long enough to know it's not worth it (I've learned through trail and error XD I used to respond to everything when I was younger. Tbh I'm still learning to control my "I wanna respond to this mean person" impulses but I'm getting better I think!) In any case, I appriciate the advice ty!! ;w;

MY LORE okay that's a new one

*THIS IS GONNA BE LONG AND RAMBLY*

Who I am? 17 year old genderfluid digital and traditional artist 👍

For my lore as an artist: My dad is a painter so from a very young age i was surrounded by art materials literally taking up half our small living room because of the easles, giant canvas rolls, wood, cabinets full of paints and brushes, etc.

Essentially I was very encouraged by him to draw lol, and it also came out of me just finding art so much fun in general. I knew that if I got good enough at it I could draw almost anything I wanted if i pushed myself to learn.

I get verrry engrossed learning anything creative and visual, whether it be making my own website, sewing, sculpting, video editing, 3d modelling, painting, woodworking, etc it's all SO! MUCH! FUN!! I also have to specify visual creativity because oh boy can i not stand trying to make music as much as i want to.

In school I was very obviously the art kid and one of the weird kids, but luckily never got bullied because i was charismatic enough and generally there weren't major major assholes at my schools somehow. I usually was involved with the special programs in my schools because of my enthusiasm to learn and participate, so I got an opportunity to enroll into an early scholarship program for LaGuardia art school in middle school which... i ended up turning down because i thought it would be too much work being in a college like that... which honestly only kind of regret because honestly now i'd rather get into drafting and architecture.

Speaking of drafting and architecture! The reason my dad became a painter is because my grandma couldn't afford to send him to school to become an architect, so he pushed me to go into the field as well now that I have the opportunity. I didn't really feel like it but it seemed kind of interesting designing buildings because if i knew how buildings were made, i could more accurately put detail into my art xD Most decisions I make are to improve my own artwork because it's my life and soul, and luckily i ended up getting interested into working with more drafting.

My first social media i posted art on was google plus, then came deviantart, then came youtube, then twitter, and now tumblr (and cohost & itaku). I still use twitter but my main account (@/hamunako) is essentially inactive, I don't care enough to keep posting there nor do i have the motivation NOR do i want to have the anxiety to feel like I have to keep posting because uh oh people wont interact with me otherwise!!!!! Now I just use a private account with less than 25 followers and its the best. I made this Tumblr account though just in case twitter finally deleted itself off of the face of the planet, and also because i've always wanted to figure out how tumblr works & instagram confused me even more than tumblr...

As for why i've been drawing SOOOO much lonely wolf treat lately??? Short answer: ADHD (possible autism too?), Long answer: A long long time ago I watched manlybadasshero's playthrough of lonely wolf treat and loved it, then i forgot about it until i went on itch a while ago and saw that nami had posted mochi in frosting so I was like WOAH THERE'S STILL NEW CHAPTERS?! I got even more into it when it turned out one of my new friends ALSO had played lonely wolf treat so we drew the characters and it allllll spiraled from there.

Can't think of anything else interesting to share regarding my lore but yeah!!! Also I take commissions, just message me and i'll show what I can do and my prices! Don't have a formal post yet but i'll get to it at some point, i'm not very formal in the first place xP

Do you have any advice for someone who wants to achieve a more “painterly look” like your art? Thank you for the praise. It always feels a bit weird since I don't think I am doing something very special (in fact I am very lazy).

Ah well, and it's quite ok for me to not get so much attention (on IG actually my followers drop with each new pic I post, so I guess it's rather naturally declining currently, getting to the same "non-fame-state" like here haha ^^)

I was asked in the past about the painterly style and my answer is: Try to look closely at real oil paintings/also digital paintings which don't consist of outlines (there are more than estimated actually), look very closely at what kind of colours you see actually. When you are very curious, save a certain pic and check out with your colour picker what's the colour. With a certain background and smart usage of same colour range even super greyish tones look like pink or red. One get's easily "fooled" (also me) by that.

You will also need a digital brush which blends two colours into a third (for example: you have a red base, paint it over slightly with a blueish tone and get a violet-grey which is useful for indicating shadow).

Thats the colour part... another is the sculpting part, getting a certain shape (in my case a certain glance, and I am not always lucky to make the best). There is a lot of trying out, is the mouth to big, the eyes too wide apart and so on and on... it's not easy to paint it correclty at the first shot. Your eyes might get used at some point what looks OK or natural. Also try to use other artists pictures as a loose reference of what looks fine, how you can sculpt an eye or a nose and at some point you will be able to paint it the way you want it to be... but it can be a hard and long process to finally achieve something that doesn't look off.

Before I continue to write a novel: I do have a yt channel, also some tutorials available there, just when you are very curious. They might not be the best but I try to explain very practically and easily how to paint the way I do, there are also some real time painting tutorials, so you are able to see how the process works irl (two words: boringly slowly xD but it can encourage you, you wil learn I don't just snip with my finger and a painting is done but it takes time, thinking and trying out and it's ok when you need time ^^ haha)

Night sings, he just does. Just by the few clips I've seen him in and the way he acts. That man sings during a conversation where he's trying to make a point

When someone pisses the Host off, he either send them in a reality of one of his stories depending on his mood of being pissed by the person or he sends them them to the backrooms! :D

If Jackie sleepwalks, it's like a blood moon or something. Jackie sleepwalking in his room is fine, just a scratch on his wall or two or a broken chair but if he sleeps walks in the manor? Chaos. His super strength is unpredictable because there is no way you can tell if he's using it or not but if he just sleeps walks to someone and like light slaps them or leans on them that person will go flying. Most of this is said by Marvin because this has happened about 4 times to him and he has had a force field on him every night he sees Jackie.

Dark and Yancy sing together in his office. Like Dark doing casual paper work in his office, Yancy doing some digital art in his iPad and Anti with virus on the side couch and Dark would end up murmuring a song then Yancy would continue it and boom you got a whole show. Anti loves these and both him and Virus just enjoy it.

Engineer, my lovely space boy. Ever since he built the warp core during ISWM he learns things so fast, like if Yancy teaches him how to play piano, he can play like an average song in a few hours in the lesson and Yancy is just proud by this.

Uh oh a sad one:

Engineer has nightmares of returning back to the point of the captain holding him when he's being sucked into the broken warp core wormhole and just stares at his hand and remembers the grip of the captain, wondering if he should stay in this new life with a new family, or go back to the life with being the Head Engineer and being by the captain's side.

yknow I wanna ditch the thing im doing rn and just start writing so many angst and fluff rn

OOF there's so many mobile games I'm listing so prepare yourself

BATTLE CATS is the shit. Tough levels at points but there is a semblance of progress to be had. They added a lot of events and extra shit so it might be overwhelming for new people. i have no idea tho I barely started playing it again.

I'm a lover of the solitare genres (klondike and spider) but ugh the ads. I really only like them for the virtual customization of the themes that desktop comps dont provide enough of and having something offline to play on the go. ive been getting better at the four suit spider games, tho- i can feel my brain learning. 😁

Bingo games are fun! I don't have any one in particular I like the best, tho. Been a while since I played them.

Tinker Island 1 has great progression and you have the opportunity to collect the paid currency constantly, building up your gem vault. I like the garden minigame more than the actual gameplay XD.

I like Marvel Puzzle Quest for the match-3 gameplay with the marvel aesthetic. I'd recc. to play this one casually because progression is nonexistent with AND without $.

On the topic of match games, Bejeweled is a classic. 😊 I loved the butterfly rescue one back in the day and poker version was fun too- the tension is just MWAH.

Grand Summoners is for some reason spending a lot of money in ads because I'm seeing it everywhere despite having it on the exact device I'm seeing the ads on??? I'm not saying it's a problem it's just odd, lol. Micromanaging gear and teams will implode your brain but there is some strategy to it, even if you try to auto everything. They have crossover events all the time, on top of progression being kinda slow but still possible, and I'm quite happy with unexpectedly pulling a Hatsune Miku and evolving her. 😊

I would recc. trying out Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Links out for a test run to see if the grind is up your alley. Very generous with rarity tickets the last time I played it.

For another simple game, billiards are fun too, and easier to play digitally than in real life, lol. You will be playing against other humans all the time, tho.

Injustice 1 or 2 and Marvel Contest of Champions have their own pros and cons, but both are finger-input fighting/brawl games with IPs so it depends on asthetic and progression i guess? If I had to choose tho, I would say Injustice is more organized in its content than Champions if that makes any sense?

Best Fiends is a cute and neat lil' bubble draw and pop game that has some progression to it, but it's been a while since I played it. Surprising for me that I even like this one since the mascots are cartoony insects.

Color Puzzle is a gradient-building/color-matching puzzle game. I played it during my art class and it made me more aware of how colors react next to each other though it can hurt your eyes.

Visual novel story/chapter games are ones you need to curate yourself to figure out which one you'll want to sit through. Chapters has sexual/explicit stories but a beefy reward system compared to Choices from what I remember, plus community engagement/contests. This likely could have changed now- I haven't checked. Other apps have (slightly) animated characters/establishing shots and some are more customizable in the protagonist and reputation systems (romance or otherwise). They all blended together in my mind like a big soup of colors, but i will tell you that the paid currency choices are never worth it.

(Pixel) Color-by-number games are fun pastimes until they hurt your eyes and drain your device battery.

South Park Phone Destroyer was fun for a bit. Until it wasn't.

Dream Girlfriend is the best Ambition gacha/character simulation game they have, prove me wrong.

side note: have you ever played a mobile game that got deleted? one that was solely a play-to-win that was also fun in general and you were close to maxing out your characters? yeah, it's worse than the pain you feel when you discover your fave fic has been deleted from the internet😢

No it’s a large scale digital art competition/community event, it’s effectively an art trading event. Everyone who registers is grouped into two different teams (this year it’s Team Vampires vs. Team Werewolves) that are assigned randomly. You’ll “attack” people on the opposing team by drawing art of their OCs, and your team gets points for what you create with each attack. The opposing artist can “counter attack” by drawing a character belonging to the first attacker. The team with the highest score by the end of the month wins! You can also vote on other peoples attacks anonymously, which goes towards over all team point averages. But the main point is to give and receive amazing art, network with new artists, and improve over time!

It’s a huge online event that’s apparently been going on since 2007, though I think it didn’t really hit peoples radar until 2016 when the site was created formally.

I tried to participate in 2019 but my schedule got crazy and I’ve learned since then not to volunteer for time sensitive events unless I’m absolutely certain I’ll have the time to do it.

Maybe next year, we’ll see how it goes!

Edit: if you want to see artists getting into fist fights, some people got creative with the Art vs. Artist challenge way back, where you’d draw on top of a mocked up photo of yourself getting your ass beat by one of your own OCs or vise versa lol

It's honestly starting to feel like furry AI art is becoming the next NFT bubble, in that a bunch of people are starting to get fairly aggravating as they basically holler that it's gonna replace artists and let them get studio level comissions for free.

I've been doing content creation for long enough to know that IP holders and advertisers are psychotic when it comes to copyrights and profiteering over BS, so if it becomes big, they're gonna sue the people hosting dalle AI and what not because it skims through images on the internet, and it can potentially infringe on their intelectual propriety. I mean. So current iteration of stuff that's high quality and free is not going to last. (plus servers aren't free)

And there's the issue that AI art isn't currently actually doing "art" (I really hate "X is art/X is not art " arguments).

Currently what it can do is visually describe a text prompt, which is really impressive, and you can def use that as a basis for art.

But the thing is that digital illustration is way more than just drawing whatever, you need to conceptualize what you're going to draw, which is potentially both extremely specific and extremely unique, which AI doesn't handle well (a simple example, tell it to draw a friend without using their full name)

You also have to consider a whole lot of stuff like how the colors are interacting within the piece, considerations over the tridimensionalness of stuff, does this make sense anatomy wise, does it look good? Does it become a noisy blob when you look at it if you zoom out, etc. Etc. Etc.

I've seen really cool stuff made with AI art, in particular I really liked an animation made using a ton of frames of furry wolf girls where it essentially has you panning around the character whilst it subtly morphs into a lot of examples of "furry wolf girl" (I don't actually remember the prompts) in that neat psychedelic way computer imagery ocasionally gets.

The "caveat" is that reading through that reddit post, the animator that made it has done some polishing to the frames and largely composed the animation, it looks like they used another system to morph between the frames that they carefully optimized to make the animation amazing. They didn't throw "make fur girl spin" and have the PC blurt it, they did a lot of work.

The stuff I've seen that doesn't get that level of care and attention doesn't have that wow factor, it looks bland and static. Best analogy I can think of is with photography in a sense, if you just point a camera at something and snap a picture it's going to be "just a photo" in terms of artsy quality, in order to get a photograph to have the appeal I'm prob failling to illustrate I'm positive you need to know in detail how the camera interacts with the world and have as many things that you'd use to describe the photo be a decision.

And then you're also potentially gonna have issues with the AI making artifacts in the image, small errors can make stuff look glaringly wrong.

cut it some slack, the human brain is vastly more powerful with a significant portion of the hardware not only dedicated to seeing, but also on pattern recognition XD.

I do ultimately hope AI illustration winds up as a positive thing, it's a fairly accessible way to get high quality looking stuff, I know that the disconnect for how you see things in your mind VS what you draw is extremely demoralizing at times, so if a inexperienced artist can basically toy and play with it and have either making stuff more their own, or having to have less hassle working around the AI be a motivation to give their all to learn art would be awesome.

Plus it could potentially be a new nascent art form

Anyways, mainly made this rant because I've somehow wound up interacting with people that are ticking way too many similar boxes to cryptobros when NFTs weren't dead

Ahaha I had a whole post in my head, but it was basically gone by the time these uploaded. Maybe if I just start typing I'll remember some of it? Back in Jan I spontaneously decided I wanted to try aping Akari Funato's style for fun. I've admired her Lunar work for years but I'd never actually gone and sat down and done direct style studies from her art before--so I did just that, flipped thru my copy of Vheen and sketched some of my favorite Dyne and Ghaleon expressions!

The images above are all directly referenced from Funato-san's panels. I got the hang of how she drew Dyne relatively quickly, but Ghaleon took a bit more practice before I felt confident I'd caught the subtlety of emotion she puts into his face.

Then I put all my references away and did a bunch of "blind" sketching to see what I'd retained from a handful of hours of studies:

At this point I was satisfied with what I'd learned and decided to put it to use on R. Ballien's section of the Jan Patron Shout-out Drawing:

Of course I don't often see Funato-san picking super bold, Lisa Frank-esque color pallets, but I'm real happy with how this turned out! XD At some point tho I wanna do some digital studies of Funato-san's coloring style.

It's always so rewarding to take a day to just dive deep into studying another artist's style, I super recommend it if you're ever feeling art blocked or out of ideas. :3

Oh man i started drawing a WHILE ago haha. You know kids who will just like draw and make random picture books for fun? That was me. Later my older sibling (who is much older than me) was my inspiration mainly because she was both very good at writing and art and as a typical younger sibling i wanted to be better than her at SOMETHING (and i knew it wasnt going to be writing) XD

I started off drawing really random stuff like just random characters and animals. Then i really got into drawing cartoon characs that i liked like Pokemon, Digimon, Neopets and PPG, and then i got into IZ, and now we’re back full circle to the OCs \o/

You just try it out and if you like it you continue it! Like tbh personally, i got into digital art mainly because i didnt trust myself colouring in traditionally (without ruining the pencil lineart i’d worked SO HARD on lol). My whole modus operandi at one point used to be: lineart traditionally, scan, lineart with mouse in like...Flash if i hadnt inked it by hand, and then paintbucket and do some random shading and effects in Photoshop.

Like this (from 2004). Beautiful. XD

Now i just do everything digitally like so:

(from 2018 and with a bit more know how and a tablet).

I mainly use Photoshop (because i’ve been using it forever and know where everything is, not because it’s particularly good) and Flash/Animate/whatever it’s called now for animations. I would like to try CSP some day as people keep saying it’s really good and learning new programs can be handy.

AHHH HEH sorry for taking so long to answer this!

I’m. I’m not the best, at designing humans. Like yea I can spit them out but they’re not really unique! I’ve only just recently started character design on people, but from what I’ve learned here are a few tiny tips? Maybe?

Look up refs please goodness it’s not cheating

Use the correct shape for personality! By that I mean, sharp shapes for more “pointed” characters, round ones for friendlys, just basic stuff!

Learn basic anatomy just a lil bit (I never sat down to do it and I pay the price everyday ahah)

For poses and and stuff I think it’s helpful to think about their worldview; someone who’s kinda crazy and not afraid of anything will always kinda have their arms out, introverted people will always kinda hunch/close around themselves, stuff like that

Really know the personality of your character, first off. It’s easy for myself personally to just make a person and say “look it’s x character” but I know it’s not. If it doesn’t click it doesn’t click, so know their demeanor and experiences beforehand

Young characters have larger eyes and their facial features are lower on their face the younger they are, it’s like a slider. Young characters are more disproportionate the younger they are.

Explore body types! (I need to do this more)

Don’t be afraid to keep trying things out, for me personally I get out a rough idea with shapes just to get a feeling of the character and then do the head, then just. Mix and match different facial/body features until it clicks

If you’re trying to make a certain character that you’ve had in your mind, make a collage of other characters with attributes you like and then pin point what exactly you’re gonna draw into your own character

Honestly I have no clue what I’m talking about. Been doing digital art for almost a year and a half now, so I’m still learning. The biggest thing is to just look up tips from artists that are really in the industry! There’s some great peeps on YT, so listen to them not me XD

Fanfic origin story

I was going to reblog that fanfic ask meme, but I realized I actually did not have good answers to too many of the prompts. So I’m going to forego the meme and simply tell a fandom origin story unprompted, ahahaha.

I posted my very first fic to FFN when I was 13. It was an amalgamation of “things I’ve seen happen in other fics on this website” + a weird tangent about airplanes and it received exactly one review.

The review said something like “no plot, OOC, bad fic.” Like, that’s not a summary--that’s just how it read verbatim, a collection of negative phrases.

13-year me had basically no personal attachment to her writing (which is probably healthier than what it is now, LOL). My primary interest at the time was webdesign, not fanfic. I was just trying out writing what I thought fanfic was, having not yet learned that fanfic was whatever I wanted it to be. So it’s not like I was permanently scarred by this review or anything; it was funny in its incredible brevity and even 13-year old me could allow that it was probably true.

The part that makes this memorable, though, was that it was from someone who was TWENTY-ONE YEARS OLD and was fandom famous enough to get double, triple-digit review counts on her fics and had people like, drawing fan art for her fanfic and the whole nine. So when I read her profile and learned all this I was like lol??????????? And the older I get the funnier it gets because a grown human took time out of their day to dunk on a middle schooler’s harmlessly bad 500-word fluff fic when they literally could have simply rolled around naked in their own fic reviews and adoring fans. Where did this damage even come from.

Of course, as it happened, we ended up sharing a fandom more than once, off and on, because the Internet can be a very small place. It’s not like she remembered me (not to mention by that point I was going by a different name--that FFN account was a joint account with my co-blogger, like this one is), but of course I. remembered. her. XD

We never interacted again, but completely 100% vindictively, I would check up on her fics from time to time to be like do I even think these are good? or Am I better than her yet?? Which is also totally silly behavior, yes. And I’m not sure what “better” here would mean, since I think fanfic is primarily a matter of personal taste. But I am still the winner in this story because:

Never once have I left a mean comment on anyone’s fic!

I am still writing fanfic!

Back at it again with my self-indulgent comic posts. This time! It’s Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow #3, perhaps the most tonally-distinct entry yet, with shades of The Twilight Zone.

Spoilers!

So, as mentioned, this issue is the most deliberate in terms of both its pacing and its tone, IMO.

What is that tone, you ask?

To quote Alex Danvers, from “Midvale”: Hello, darkness.

THE STORY:

Kara and Ruthye are still looking for Krem Clues in the alien town of Maypole.

(Which is actually just Small Town, USA, complete with vintage 50s aesthetics.)

But the locals are clearly hiding something! So Kara and Ruthye continue to investigate, and they eventually discover what it was that the residents of Maypole were so keen to keep hidden.

Genocide, basically.

As I said, this issue struck me as very Twilight Zone; a genre story involving the build-up to a dark twist, all set against the backdrop of an idyllic small town. (Think, like, “The Monsters are Due on Maple Street” but instead of focusing on the Red Scare, it’s classism and racism.)

The wealthier blue aliens kicked all of the purple aliens out of town, and when space pirates showed up to pillage and plunder, the blue aliens made a deal with them: the lives of the purple aliens in exchange for their safety.

Which is where the episodic story connects to the larger mission; it was Krem who suggested the trade, and then joined up with the Brigands (space pirates) when he was freed by the blue aliens.

The issue ends with no tidy resolution to the terrible things Kara and Ruthye discovered, but they do have a lead on where to find Krem, now, as well as Barbond’s Brigands.

KARA-CTERIZATION:

Ironically, it’s here, in the darkest chapter yet, that we get the closest to what might be considered ‘classic’ Kara.

Which I think comes down to that aforementioned deliberate pace--this issue is a little slower, a little quieter. It gives the characters some room to breathe.

That’s not to say Crusty Kara is gone. Oh no. She is still very much Crusty. XD

But anyways. A list! Of Kara moments I loved!

I mentioned a few of these in a prior post when the preview pages came out: I like the moment where Kara blows down the guy’s house of cards, and I like that the action is echoed later in the issue when she grabs the mayor’s desk and tosses it aside. A nice visual representation of the escalation of Kara being, like. Done with these creeps. (Creeps is an understatement but you get the idea.)

Another one from the preview pages: Kara explains to Ruthye that her super hearing won’t necessarily help her detect a lie, especially if she’s dealing with an alien species she’s not familiar with.

It not only reveals her level of competence and understanding of her super powers, it also shows that, you know. She’s a thinker. She’s smart.

Amazing! Showing, rather than telling us, that Kara is smart! Without mentioning the science guild at all wow hey wow.

(Sorry, pointed criticism of the SG show fandom.)

Anyways.

I dig the PJs!

And Kara catching the bullet! Not only are the poses and character acting great, it’s also a neat bit of panel composition:

We start with Ruthye’s POV, and then move to the wide shot of the room. The panel where Kara actually catches the bullet is down and to the side of the wide shot panel--we move our eyes the way her body/arm would have to move to intercept the bullet. Physicality in static, 2D images!

Also, like. It’s a very tense moment, life-or-death, but. Ruthye’s wide-eyed surprise at the bullet in Kara’s hand? Kind of adorable.

I was pretty much prepared for the page of Kara shielding Ruthye from the gunfire to be the highlight--it was one of the first pages King shared and I was like, ‘yeah, YEAH.’ But, shockingly? The TRUE highlight of the issue?

Where do I BEGIN?!?!

EVERYTHING. About this moment. Is lovely.

From Kara holding Ruthye above the bench to explaining the concept of a piggyback ride, to telling her:

“I’m going to hold my hands here, and these hands can turn coal into diamonds, so they’re not going to let go. I’m going to keep you safe.”

HNNNNNNNNNNNG.

Ruthye’s narration--about how Kara had avoided flying as she was concerned it would freak Ruthye out--just adds a whole additional layer of YES, GOOD, YES, and her line on that splash page is great: “You see, all that time, she was worried about me.”

HNNNNNNNNNNNG. AGAIN.

To say nothing of the STELLAR ARTWORK.

And SPEAKING of that stellar artwork, Evely and Lopes continue to knock it out of the park. Each issue is distinct and beautifully crafted, a true joy to look at.

Before I jump into more of the art, a few final notes of character stuff in general.

Ruthye is the one most affected by the experience in Maypole, as she can’t comprehend how a society of people that look so nice and gentle and peaceful could have been party to such a horrible act.

One of the big criticisms of the book thus far is that Supergirl is not the main character, and I guess I can agree with that observation. Typically, in Western media, the main character is the one who goes through the most change in the story.

And, yeah. That’s Ruthye.

As I was reading the end, where Ruthye sits on the curb and Kara hugs her, I was imagining how the scene would’ve played, had King stuck with the original idea for the series: Kara as the one learning to be tough/experiencing all of this for the first time, and while I think that could certainly work...

I continue to appreciate that King literally flipped the script; that Kara, especially in this issue, is like, ‘I’ve seen this, I know this,’ as opposed to being the one going through a loss of innocence.

*Marge Simpson voice* I just think it’s neat!

Because Kara’s been a teen in DC comics for so long--ever since she was reintroduced to the main DCU continuity, actually--so this is all brand new territory, here. Having an older Kara who’s SEEN SOME STUFF.

(Alsoooooo, since Bendis made the destruction of Krypton not just inaction and climate disaster, but rather, genocide, and the subtext of a Kryptonian diaspora text, the waitress’ derogatory comment regarding the the destruction of Kryton, as well as Kara picking up the bad vibes the entire time, suggests not just a broad commentary on discrimination in all its forms, but specifically allegorical anti-Semitism. The purple aliens being forced out of their homes and into substandard living conditions, then the blue aliens--their neighbors and once-fellow residents--essentially allowing the space pirates to kill them, making them literal scapegoats, Kara discovering the remains of the purple aliens, and Ruthye’s horror at the ‘banality of evil’...yes. A case could be made, I think.)

(Which would probably require a post unto itself and a lot more in-depth discussion, nuance, and cited sources.)

(Should mention that King has brought up that both he and Orlando--the other Supergirl writer he talked to--are Jewish, and for him personally, that shaped his views on Kara’s origin story.)

I guess my point is that this issue is perhaps not as out-of-left-field as some might think, and just because there isn’t as obvious an arc for Kara, doesn’t mean there isn’t some sharp character work at play.

(I could be WAY OFF, of course, and I’m not suggesting it’s a clear 1:1 comparison. I’d actually really love to hear King talk about this issue in particular.)

Anyways.

Here’s the final page, which I think works, because as I mentioned before, there is no easy answer/quick wrap-up to the story of Maypole:

THE ART:

I mean. How many times can I just shout ‘ART! AAAARRRRRRRRRRRTTTT!’ before it gets old?

I dunno, but I guess we’re gonna FIND OUT.

There are some panels in this issue that I just. Like ‘em! From a purely artistic standpoint! Because they’re so good!

Like, I just really love the way Kara is drawn in that top panel. Her troubled, confused expression, the colors of the fading light, the HAIR.

Evely draws the best hair. I know I’ve said this before. I don’t care. I will continue to say it, because it continues to be true.

The issue I find myself running up against when I make these posts is that I really don’t want to post whole pages, as that’s generally frowned upon (re: pirating etc.) but with something like this, you just can’t appreciate it in panel-by-panel snippets.

(Guided View on digital reading platforms is a BANE and a POX I say!)

Anyways.

LOVE the implied movement of the cape settling as Kara speeds in and stops.

And, obviously, Kara flicking the bullet away is just. A+.

And the EYES, man. LOPES’ COLORS ON THE EYES???!?! BEAUTIFUL.

Also, should note the lettering! The more rounded letters for the ‘WOOSH’ of Kara’s speed (and, earlier, the super breath) work nicely, and contrast with the angular, violent BLAMS of the gunshots.

And, I gotta say, the editor is doing a really great job of not cluttering up the artwork with all the caption boxes. Which is no small task.

(I assume the editor is placing them, as editors usually handle word balloon/caption box placement, but I suppose it could be Evely? Sometimes the artist handles it. Either way, whoever’s taking care of all the text, EXCELLENT WORK! BRAVO!)

Okay I think that’s everything.

Ah, nope, wait.

MISC.

Just a funny observation, more than anything else: Superman: Red and Blue dropped this week, and King had a story in there, “The Special” (which was very good, btw.) Both Lois and the waitress swear a lot so I’m beginning to think that this is just how King writes dialogue for any adult character who isn’t Clark. XD

This is absolutely a personal preference but when Kara was like, “And my name IS Supergirl,” I was like nooooo. I know King is trying to simplify all of the conflicting origin stories and lore but I LIKE KARA DANVERS, SIR. XD

It’s almost assuredly a cash-grab/an attempt for DC to get all the money it can out of a book they don’t have much confidence in, but I like the cardstock covers! Very classy, much Strange Adventures.

(OH my gosh, can you imagine that issue 1 cover with spot gloss???? Basically the only way you could possibly improve on it.)

Okay NOW I’m done. For real. XD NEXT TIME: Kara and Ruthye go after Krem and the Brigands!

Hey darling! Is super ok, and of anyone has questions I'll be glad to answer!

Well about my art style, I started from manga when I was a kid, then in art school I increased my skills with more realistic subjects, and that was hella important, even learning about different medias was a big point.

I went ahead and drew a lot in Marvel and The Hobbit fandom, in both digital (you can find some art here on Tumblr) and traditional, like watercolors.

and once in university I studied fashion design, so my style changed again. After that I drew a lot of Drag Queens from Rupaul's Drag Race, in super watercolors style xD

Aaaand the I totally fell into "embroidery art", where I basically drew on Canvas with pencil and watercolors and then sew on it ✨

Then, bad days I wasn't able to do anything so just doodling on post-it or quick stuff

Then I worked for a fashion brand, so I have only stuff from work from that moment, but I still like them, obv in 2020 I lost my job and here came the reeeeeal bad depression, when I could not draw anything, even a line.

Until now, when I joined mha fandom and came back drawing (and to life, I can say) 😌

Thennnn... My biggest influence at the beginning were anime and mangas, I red a lot of them in my childhood and teenage years, so definitely: my biggest boost, especially Dragon ball. After that I have to say I went into Schiele a lot, just loved the emotions he can yell trought the canvass, just amazing.

Hum I really can't pick a particular piece, the pics above are basically the hightest points of rispective "periods" so I'm gonna stick with them, but also recently I am super proud of this, I dunno it turned out exactly how I wanted xD

Hum then... Sorry if I misunderstood the question about tropes, I think I like the "friend to lover" thing, that is basically the biggest hint for KiriBaku, and otherwise if you meant "tropes" into an artistic view I can say I love drawing them blushing, even just a little, so I put a little blush in every picture ahahah :)

Oh! And for the quirk I'd love to have something related to water, something like Kota (son of the duo water hose) but related to cold-hot water, something like a steam explosion 😆 like a geyser, would be amazing ✨

For a person that prides themselves as the "know it all" when it comes to people's social media and reputation, he doesn't know anything about you.

This is a first for him, which is both annoying and honestly so intriguing. You didn't strike him as a person who would hide any secrets, and he had a hunch this was about to be good.

He searched for social media first, not finding anything about Avery Remington. Well, at least nothing with your face on it.

However, he did find something very, very interesting while looking at the school's documents, specifically the archives of all the students that have already studied here. He honestly didn't think he would find anything about you in these old papers, he was probably doing all this stupid work for nothing.

However, he was half right and half wrong. He didn't find anything about you, but this whole search wasn't completely lost, as he did find "you", Avery.

"- Student name Avery Remington, average grades and apparently no history of wrong doings or any bad behavior in general. Their registration to the Academy dates to 1980."

Oh. Ooooh, this was rich.

"- Huh." He said closing the documents and letting it where he found it. He was at least kind enough to let the palace a little organize after going through each paper trying to find your name.

Well, "your name". The only things that he kept for himself was photos of both the old documents about Avery Remington, and the earlier documents about Avery Remington. It was clear that you did something probably really, really bad, and you know he'll take advantage of it.

He had built his own theory about this, as in: you somehow found the paperwork of Avery's registration and their previous school's records so you could somehow impersonate them and get a free entrance to this institution.

He knew that you had something to hide, no one can be so perfect. But knowing the action itself wasn't enough for him, he needed to know the motive behind it.

For someone that is lazy and doesn't bother to care about important things, he sure spent a lot of time trying to scoop some dirt on you. When he finds the perfect opportunity, without any witness around, he'll take the chance to use this information against you.

"- Well, hello "Avery"." His tone was already suspicious, his voice not hiding anything from you. He came here to belittle you for his own entertainment.

"- H-Hi Adrien." You said shyly, hoping that your anxious mind was wrong and that this was all just a misunderstanding. You were hoping that the growing feeling of him possibly knowing about your fraud, was wrong.

"- Ya know, I'm kinda jealous of whatever plastic surgery you went through to look so young, maybe you should ask the faculty to correct your age tho." He said while showing the pictures he took of the documents.

"- Wait! I-I can-"

"- Honestly, I didn't think you were over 60 years old! Could have fooled me." His smug face was the selling point. You knew that you wouldn't find any form to convince him that what was on his phone was false.

He had a victorious smile on his face. Ever since you entered this school you always acted a little too paranoid and almost too friendly for his liking, and to confess to himself that he has fallen for you would be the bottom of the pit to him.

Still, he wanted to know why you did it. Why didn't you pay to get in if you wanted the scholarship so badly? What, you were too poor for it?

And what about a talent, or the test? Obviously, the university hasn't gone out of their way to pick a loser like you and insert you inside their classes on a whim, as they thought you were Avery Remington, a student that is already registered in school's documents (yet, of course, their system haven't verified the date of the registration, either by incompetence or by a "small mistake"). So you didn't do the test too, simply pathetic honestly.

Your sad dramatic story explaining how you managed to get into the academy. You did your best to get into the academy by legal means, but they always rejected you. Apparently you thought it would be a good idea to use your grandparent's documents to squeeze yourself into the institution.

"- But why in hell would you do such a thing? Are you that pathetic dearest?"

"- I… I wanted somewhere to go. Somewhere I could grow into a better person, a-away from-" You cut yourself short when the memories of your old home started to come into view.

For some reason, your parents couldn't stand the idea of you getting into a decent university, if anything, they thought you weren't capable of even washing some dishes at the local pizzeria. In their eyes, you were worthless.

When you found out your grandparent used to frequent this institution, and that they managed to disattached themselves from their familial routes and thrive as a musician you got instantly inspired! Determined to follow their steps and prove your family that you're just as worth ass-

"- Urghhhh- Boring! I don't care about all of that. Are you serious? You committed a crime just so you could stick it up to your shitty parents?"

"- …. Yes?"

"- Huh. Geez you're cooler than I thought. Listen, how about we make a deal?"

The deal was simple, he would not tell anyone about your little secret, and he would even help you keep your scholarship and help you reach your ambitions as long as you started spending more time with him. Which, at first you thought it sounded absurd, this man is holding your whole life by a thin thread as long as you give him attention?? What?!

And although that sounded extremely suspicious, you accepted it, not knowing that for the next few years you would have to endure a harsh training to discover your talents and to improve them before you two graduated. However, you started to think Adrien was starting to see your deal in a different light-

"- Come on now, after this we can go eat something okay? Where would you like to go this time? Our last date I chose the best restaurant I know, so you better choose something of equal value."

…. Date?

→Alexandra Coldwell:

You were suspicious from the very start. Overly friendly and too- Ugh! Too cute?!

You were always skittish whenever someone called you. What, you had a problem with your name or something?

And the worst part was how no one seemed to know where you lived. Every group project with you was considered annoying by most of your classmates, as you never called people in your house or never let anyone have your address, not even your phone number??

You didn't have any social media, what are you, a weirdo? What the hell??!

She is not even pissed about you being a loser, she is pissed that she has fallen for someone like you! A complete weirdo that was always panicking over nothing.

She started stalking you with the intention of finding at least one thing that she could hate on you so she wouldn't feel so- Lovey dovey towards you!

But what she really found was something worth an entire gold mine.

A private phone call between you and someone who was losing their shit. She couldn't understand too much of the conversation as she didn't have any context, yet she could hear a lot of things that you and the person were discussing.

The person yelled [Y/N] multiple times while in the phone call, saying how you were absolutely the worst mistake of their lives (which by the way, rude much? Who is this asshole?), that you were a selfish brat that needed to learn to appreciate their hard work.

Oh… Oh. She now knows who you're talking with. She decided to record the entire thing the moment she saw you taking your cellphone to have a private call.

She was planning on recording your voice for her own hearing pleasure, but this? This was so… Interesting.

"- [Y/N]?" She called your attention after the conversation ended, and because you haven't been accustomed to people calling you "Avery", you turned around saying "what" instinctively.

And when you noticed Alexandra smirk for a split second, you regretted answering your parents call. Not that you needed anymore reason to regret it, but this was certainly the last nail in the coffin.

You begged for her to understand that you couldn't go back, you simply can't go back to them, ever again! You told her the whole sob story about how your grandparent had decided to run away from home and fulfil their own dreams as a musician, even if people didn't really hear their music all that much, and now that you think about it, that's probably the reason why no one have recognized their name at all.

Your grandparent had a really small fanbase, and you knew that because you were part of them. They weren't popular at all compared to Amaryllis Academy standards, yet they were happy singing their songs to the world.

You kinda wish your family hasn't broken the old recorder that belonged to your grandparent. Their first album was in there, it was cheesy and filled with errors, yet they sounded so happy when doing what they loved, and you wanted something like that for yourself!

You needed to live that hell hole and so you did. You rented a small apartment that was falling apart, the reason why you never gave people your address was because you knew they would bully the hell out of you because of how poor you are.

After finishing your story you noticed Alexandra snoring beside you. You thought she was only exaggerating, but then you saw her drooling and acting really dizzy after you woke her up.

"- Oh my God, so… That was it? You ran away to follow your dreams and stuff?" She asked, still kinda sleepy.

"- What? Of course it was-" You were fuming with anger, how dare she-

"- And I thought you only looked cool because I liked you! You're pretty strong for sticking up for yourself." She interrupted you, looking at you with admiration in her eyes.

She proposed to you a deal. How about you two keep this secret together, and, if anything does happen she'll still help you stay inside the institution. However, you'll need to work your ass out to become the best you can be, and you'll let her guide you through, because you're too much of a dummy to do it all by yourself. You'll have to spend time with her and let her help you out.

At first, you thought it sounded absurd, this woman is holding your whole life by a thin thread as long as you give her attention?? What?!

And although that sounded extremely suspicious, you accepted it, not knowing that for the next few years you would have to endure a harsh training to discover your talents and to improve them before you two graduated. However, you started to think Alexandra was starting to see your deal in a different light-

"- Why you never hold my hand? Come on, "Avery", won't you hold the hand of your dearest girlfriend?" She asked playfully while taking your hand anyway.
