We’re getting ready to launch Artemis I, the first test flight of the rocket and spacecraft that will take future astronauts to the Moon! As we prepare for the lunar voyage of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and Orion spacecraft launching as early as Aug. 29, 2022, we would like you to share your excitement with us. Share all types of Moon-inspired content with us with the hashtag #NASAMoonSnap, and we will choose some entries to share on our social media platforms and during the launch broadcast. Get creative! We’re looking for Moon paintings, Moon poetry, Moon pottery, Moon latte foam art — the sky is not the limit.

Since we have the full Moon coming up on Aug. 11, we wanted to share our handy dandy Moon photography guide and inspire you with some of our NASA imagery experts’ stories on capturing the Moon.

"The first rollout of the SLS rocket with the Orion spacecraft aboard was a really exciting moment to capture. I was photographing at Kennedy Space Center in an area where many of the employees that had worked on different parts of the SLS were watching. It was so great to hear some of their stories and see their pride in helping to build this amazing rocket and spacecraft. Once the mobile launcher with SLS passed the crowds to head toward the launchpad, people began to line up in their cars to leave. I decided to stick around and try to get a closer image of the Moon with SLS. It was fairly dark by the time I made this image, so there isn’t any detail in the moon, but it’s still moving to see them next to one another and know that SLS will be closer to the Moon than Earth very soon, and will one day enable humans to land on the lunar surface again!" — Aubrey Gemignani, NASA contract Photo Archivist/Photographer, NASA Headquarters

“I set up this shot when I saw the Moon was lined up perfectly with the X-1E in front of the main entrance to Armstrong Flight Research Center one morning last year. The X-1 was a key piece of early NACA/NASA history, and it is pointing to the Moon showing us where we are going next with Artemis. I still remember walking around on my first day at NASA and seeing all the places where history was made. I was in awe as I walked these hallowed grounds. As I was shooting the moonrise from the riverbank in downtown New Orleans, I was lucky to have one of the city’s iconic riverboats turn a bend and head upriver to pass beneath the Moon. “I was excited to try to capture a waning crescent Moon at dawn, even though it was late February, 20 degrees Fahrenheit and 6:30 in the morning…Nonetheless, I decided to photograph on-site at Lewis Field, and ended up using my telephoto lens to really zoom in on the Moon. In a race against the sunrise and the Moon disappearing, I was able to capture a cool shot of the Moon with a couple planes making an appearance as well (The Cleveland Hopkins Airport is right next door). “In creating this Moon image, I almost felt pressured to find the ‘perfect location.’ The more that I thought about that prospect, the more I was drawn to using only natural elements, in my own environment. I wanted to find an image in my own backyard. This image was captured just as the Sun dropped below the horizon. I had a very short window of time when these colors would be possible. Two minutes earlier or later would have produced a totally different image. The almost abstract lines of a Maple tree in the earliest stages of budding seemed to be in concert with the waxing crescent Moon, both preparing for full bloom. “The lighthouse in Lorain, Ohio, has been photographed by amateur and professional photographers for decades, but I have never photographed it before. When I calculated that the path of the Moon was going to go over and past the lighthouse with a reflection over the water, I decided to give it a try. I encountered four other photographers on the same pier with me that early morning. They were huddled in the middle of the pier and I was at the end. Fictober 2023 Day 24 - “Is it over? Is it really over?”

Warnings: making out, occasional swearing, use of Y/N, Matt Damon (Matt I hate you and your use of slurs, but why do you keep showing up in my favourite films? 😫)

A quiet day is usually hard to find at NASA, but since the rescue of stranded astronauts Mark Watney and Y/N L/N from Mars, things had certainly calmed down as the Hermes ship continued its almost year-long journey back to Earth, safe and sound.

Instead of calculating trajectories and plotting courses, the scientists at NASA now had a slightly more chilled job of combing through the hundreds of video logs made by the pair of astronauts during their time of exile. As soon as they arrived at the Ares IV MAV, the high-bandwidth connection on board was used to upload the diaries to Earth, to chronical their time on the red planet, but also provide the memory of their final living days in case the worst occurred during their rescue mission.

Thankfully, the worst did not happen.  

Vincent Kapoor and Mindy Park now crowded around an office computer scanning the videos for any important information they missed to be filed away for NASA’s future space missions. Annie Montrose kept an eye on them and the screen over their shoulders for anything she might be able to release to the public who continued to clamour for anything about life on Mars.

“Our own employees shit-talking the scientists of NASA and their advice to help save their lives maybe shouldn’t be broadcast to the world,” Annie lamented as Mindy shut off another video where Mark whined about an army of botanists trying to micro-manage his potatoes with a new growing technique and Y/N complained about the demanding engineers who critiqued her repairs on the rover and quote “wouldn’t know a wrench if they sat on one”.

“Self-awareness can be a refreshing approach for a government agency,” suggested Vincent, sarcastically, rubbing his eyes from the glare of the screen. Mindy laughed as Annie launched a pen at Vincent’s head in annoyance as she clicked on the next video. It began with Mark alone on the screen.

“So, nothing has caught fire in 15 sols, I think that’s a new record for us,” Mark always managed to sound cheerful on his video diaries no matter the situation. He could be smoking from an explosion, arm falling off and in the middle of a claustrophobia-induced argument with you, but still have a boyish smile on his face.

You couldn’t think of anyone better to be stuck on Mars with. His constant witty narration and array of new bold ideas to keep you both alive braved your unfathomable storms, even when you were close to giving up on ever returning home.

No wonder you fell for him.

And he fell for you too.

Some would say being stuck on a deserted planet with your crush would be a dream. Maybe not a dream, but the constant close quarters did force you both to admit your burgeoning feelings for each other and begin your relationship. Sure, the adrenaline-fuelled trauma bonding and distinct lack of personal space at all times sometimes felt like a wall, your patience with each other and resolve to overcome triumphed.

“Y/N should be back soon,” Mark continued, “it’s been pretty goddamn quiet without them here. I hope they get back soon, I’ve started talking to my potato plants again… Y/N, please come back soon.” You had been on a multi-Sol test-drive of the rover, trying to gently push its limits before the long pilgrimage that was to come. Mark loved your commitment to the rover, how you cared for it like your child - both your child - but all he wanted now was for you to return, safe and back in his arms.

Mark continued his daily report diligently - so diligently, in fact, that he was completely unaware of your early return back to the Hab.

All that could be seen on the screen was his eyes suddenly snapping to the side and widen with a gasp.

“Oh my God.”

In an instant, he was up and completely gone from the camera, but soon he returned, locked in a heated embrace with you.

You both crashed and clattered into the wall of the Hab; you straddling his thighs with your dusty suit rolled down, exposing your torso, and him laid almost completely flat on his desk chair, pulling you into him with all the force of a lonely lover finally reunited. Your lips moved with a frantic speed, making up for lost time, as your weathered and slightly dirty hands threaded through his hair. He clutched and squeezed all over your curves as he whispered affirmations of “God, baby, I missed you”, “fuck, I was so worried”, “I love you so much” between kisses.

Mark eventually broke away, only for a second, remembering in a panic that the computer was still recording. It took all his might to pull away from you, but you launched back in immediately, planting sloppy kisses down his neck. His eyes started to roll back with a sigh on his lips and his hand fumbled around for the computer’s off switch.

In all their years, the NASA employees had never been more shocked.

A simple briefing log quickly descended into softcore porn. But it was so hard to look away.

Mindy had her hands covering her eyes, but still secretly peeked between her fingers; this was by far the most interesting briefing she had ever been a part of.

“Is it over? Is it really over?” she asked worriedly from behind her hands. She got no response from Vincent who simply looked ahead, stunned and silent, no words to wipe their memories of what they just saw. An exasperated sigh sounded from Annie, her brow pinched within an inch of its life.

“No one release that one to the public.”

Femslash February 05 - Mystery

Margo x Ellen

On slow nights, when they were both at NASA, Ellen and Larry would sometimes speculate about the queerness of their fellow employees.

Ellen was pretty sure that Molly had slept with at least Patty, if not more women. After meeting Wayne, she was sure of it.

Larry was adamant that if Ed and Gordo had been on the moon alone, they would have fucked. They both thanked Dani for her service for saving them from dealing with the fallout of that.

Ellen was also sure that Karen and Tracy had drunkenly kissed after a party.

But where they disagreed the most was Margo. Larry couldn’t see her loving or wanting anything more than her job. But Ellen, after seeing Margo wear a skirt and heels and stride down the hallways of JSC like a middle linebacker on many occasions, wondered.

During the 1990 budget cycle, Margo came to DC and she and Ellen (now the Senator from Texas) put on a full court press of lobbying to secure the funding needed for the launch of the 1996 Mars mission. After the vote passed, Ellen joined Margo in her hotel’s bar. After a champagne toast, they moved on to tumblers of their preferred hard liquor. Ellen laughed as the bartender blew the dust off the bottle of Margo’s preferred brandy.

Ellen learned that Margo could handle her liquor. Although she did wobble a bit on the way to the elevator. She had brought Ellen’s anniversary plaque for the first class of female astronauts. Ellen had missed the ceremony due to a series of crucial votes she needed to be present for.

When she entered Margo’s hotel room, she was drunk enough to try to solve the mystery of Margo. When handed her the plaque, she leaned in and kissed Margo.

Margo didn’t freeze or push away. Nor did she kiss back or deepen the kiss.

Ellen pulled away, even more confused than before.

Margo thumped her on the shoulder. “Ellen, you’re a good person. And I don’t want to ruin another marriage. So let’s just forget this happened, OK?”

Ellen nodded. “Yes. Let’s.”

As she left Margo’s room with her plaque, she wondered what Margo had meant by another marriage. If she remembered when she was sober, she was going to find out about that. Which probably meant more drinking because god, Margo could keep secrets as well as a Soviet.

Ellen did not remember in the morning. She remembered the headache for years afterward.

Accompanied by a letter of provenance. In full: "I certify that this Holy Bible listed in the official Apollo Prayer League Lunar Bible Registry and containing all 1,245 pages of the King James Bible.

"Was flown by Astronaut Edgar D. Mitchell to the Surface of the Moon on February 5, 1971 on the Lunar Module Anteres on behalf of Reverend John M. Stout, Director of the Apollo Prayer League.

"In 1968 a group of individuals associated with NASA program formed the Apollo Prayer League, an organization dedicated to the prayerful support of NASA employees and the Apollo astronauts. A primary goal of the group was to land a Bible on the moon in honor of astronaut Edward White Jr., who died January 27, 1967 in the Apollo 1 fire. White had wanted to carry a Bible to the moon.

"Members of the Apollo Prayer League employed at the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston made a special multi-focal 'First Lunar Bible' comprised of Ed White's Revised Standard Version and the King James Version. Bible societies in fifty-seven different countries participated in the project.

"The Lunar Bible is a replica of the King James Version used in making the composite Bible. Netflix has also expanded its film efforts in India in the past year, announcing projects from the likes of Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar. For now though, the strength of its catalogue is still the acquisitions. With over 3,500 movies, Netflix offers more choices than any other platform in India. To pick the best movies on Netflix, we relied on Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and IMDb ratings to create a shortlist. The last of them was preferred for Indian films given the shortfalls of reviews aggregators in that department. Additionally, we used our own editorial judgement to add or remove a few. This list will be updated once every few months if there are any worthy additions or if some movies are removed from the service, so bookmark this page and keep checking in. A hard-hitting, well-made movie, though ironically, it was criticised for being casteist itself, and providing an outsider's perspective. The Avengers (2012) Earth's mightiest heroes — including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and the Hulk — come together in this groundbreaking Marvel team-up from writer-director Joss Whedon to stop Thor's adopted brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and his alien army from subjugating mankind.

The Big Short (2015) Starring Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling and Brad Pitt, a look at Wall Street's penchant for self-profit in a vicious loop that caused the 2007–08 global financial meltdown. Birdman (2014) Alejandro G. Iñárritu won three Oscars including Best Picture for this tale of a washed-up superhero actor (Michael Keaton) who struggles to revive his career with a Broadway play. Known for appearing as if it was shot in a single take, it also starred Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, and Emma Stone. Blade Runner (1982) One of the most influential cyberpunk films ever made is about a burnt-out cop (Harrison Ford) who reluctantly agrees to hunt down a group of fugitive “replicants”, synthetic humans with a limited life-span who aren't allowed to live on Earth. Blue Valentine (2010) Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams lead this drama that shifts between time periods to depict a couple's courtship and how their marriage fell apart. Das Boot (1981) One of the most authentic war movies ever made chronicles the life of a German submarine crew during World War II, as they go through long stretches of boredom and periods of intense conflict, while trying to maintain morale in a capsule 10 feet by 150 feet hundreds of metres under the surface. The Bourne trilogy (2002-07) Technically not a trilogy, but the first three chapters — Identity, Supremacy, and Ultimatum — starring Matt Damon in the lead as the titular CIA assassin suffering from amnesia were so good that they changed the longest-running spy franchise of all-time: James Bond.

Capernaum (2018) In the award-winning, highest-grossing Arabic film of all time, a 12-year-old from the slums of Beirut recounts his life leading up to a five-year sentence he's handed for stabbing someone, and in turn, his decision to sue his parents for child neglect. Captain Phillips (2013) The true story of a Somali pirate hijacking of a US cargo ship and its captain (Tom Hanks) being taken hostage, which spawns a rescue effort from the US Navy. The Bourne Ultimatum's Paul Greengrass directs. The Little Prince (2015) Antoine de Saint-Exupery's 1943 novella is given the animation treatment, in which an elderly pilot (Jeff Bridges) recounts his encounters with a young boy who claimed to be an extra-terrestrial prince to his neighbour, a young girl. Rachel McAdams, James Franco, and Marion Cotillard also voice. A Little Princess (1995) Alfonso Cuarón directs this tale of a young girl who is forced to become a servant by the headmistress at her New York boarding school, after her wealthy aristocratic father is presumed dead in World War I. The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-2003) Peter Jackson brought J.R.R. Tolkien's expansive Middle-Earth to life in these three three-hour epics, which charts the journey of a meek hobbit (Elijah Wood) and his various companions, as they try to stop the Dark Lord Sauron by destroying the source of his power, the One Ring.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) With the organisation he works for disbanded and his country after him, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) races against time to prove the existence of the schemers pulling the strings in this fifth chapter. Introduced Rebecca Ferguson to the franchise. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975) The legendary British comedy troupe mix their talents with the tale of King Arthur and his knights, as they look for the Holy Grail and encounter a series of horrors. Women in Exploration: From Human Computers to All-Woman Spacewalks

Since the 19th century, women have been making strides in areas like coding, computing, programming and space travel, despite the challenges they have faced. Sally Ride joined NASA in 1983 and five years later she became the first female American astronaut. Ride's accomplishments paved the way for the dozens of other women who became astronauts, and the hundreds of thousands more who pursued careers in science and technology. Just last week, we celebrated our very first #AllWomanSpacewalk with astronauts Christina Koch and Jessica Meir.

Here are just a couple of examples of pioneers who brought us to where we are today:

The Conquest of the Sound Barrier

Pearl Young was hired in 1922 by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), NASA’s predecessor organization, to work at its Langley site in support in instrumentation, as one of the first women hired by the new agency. Women were also involved with the NACA at the Muroc site in California (now Armstrong Flight Research Center) to support flight research on advanced, high-speed aircraft. These women worked on the X-1 project, which became the first airplane to fly faster than the speed of sound. 

Young was the first woman hired as a technical employee and the second female physicist working for the federal government.

The Human Computers of Langley

The NACA hired five women in 1935 to form its first “computer pool”, because they were hardworking, “meticulous” and inexpensive. After the United States entered World War II, the NACA began actively recruiting similar types to meet the workload. These women did all the mathematical calculations – by hand – that desktop and mainframe computers do today.

Computers played a role in major projects ranging from World War II aircraft testing to transonic and supersonic flight research and the early space program. Women working as computers at Langley found that the job offered both challenges and opportunities. With limited options for promotion, computers had to prove that women could successfully do the work and then seek out their own opportunities for advancement.

Revolutionizing X-ray Astronomy

Marjorie Townsend was blazing trails from a very young age. She started college at age 15 and became the first woman to earn an engineering degree from the George Washington University when she graduated in 1951. At NASA, she became the first female spacecraft project manager, overseeing the development and 1970 launch of the UHURU satellite. The first satellite dedicated to x-ray astronomy, UHURU detected, surveyed and mapped celestial X-ray sources and gamma-ray emissions.

Women of Apollo

NASA’s mission to land a human on the Moon for the very first time took hundreds of thousands workers. These are some of the stories of the women who made our recent #Apollo50th anniversary possible:

• Margaret Hamilton led a NASA team of software engineers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and helped develop the flight software for NASA’s Apollo missions. She also coined the term “software engineering.” Her team’s groundbreaking work was perfect; there were no software glitches or bugs during the crewed Apollo missions. 

• JoAnn Morgan was the only woman working in Mission Control when the Apollo 11 mission launched. She later accomplished many NASA “firsts” for women:  NASA winner of a Sloan Fellowship, division chief, senior executive at the Kennedy Space Center and director of Safety and Mission Assurance at the agency.

• Judy Sullivan, was the first female engineer in the agency’s Spacecraft Operations organization, was the lead engineer for health and safety for Apollo 11, and the only woman helping Neil Armstrong suit up for flight.

Hidden Figures

Author Margot Lee Shetterly’s book – and subsequent movie – Hidden Figures, highlighted African-American women who provided instrumental support to the Apollo program, all behind the scenes.

• An alumna of the Langley computing pool, Mary Jackson was hired as the agency’s first African-American female engineer in 1958. She specialized in boundary layer effects on aerospace vehicles at supersonic speeds. 

• An extraordinarily gifted student, Katherine Johnson skipped several grades and attended high school at age 13 on the campus of a historically black college. Johnson calculated trajectories, launch windows and emergency backup return paths for many flights, including Apollo 11.

• Christine Darden served as a “computress” for eight years until she approached her supervisor to ask why men, with the same educational background as her (a master of science in applied mathematics), were being hired as engineers. Impressed by her skills, her supervisor transferred her to the engineering section, where she was one of few female aerospace engineers at NASA Langley during that time.

Lovelace’s Woman in Space Program

Geraldyn “Jerrie” Cobb was the among dozens of women recruited in 1960 by Dr. William Randolph "Randy" Lovelace II to undergo the same physical testing regimen used to help select NASA’s first astronauts as part of his privately funded Woman in Space Program.

Ultimately, thirteen women passed the same physical examinations that the Lovelace Foundation had developed for NASA’s astronaut selection process. They were: Jerrie Cobb, Myrtle "K" Cagle, Jan Dietrich, Marion Dietrich, Wally Funk, Jean Hixson, Irene Leverton, Sarah Gorelick, Jane B. Hart, Rhea Hurrle, Jerri Sloan, Gene Nora Stumbough, and Bernice Trimble Steadman. Though they were never officially affiliated with NASA, the media gave these women the unofficial nicknames “Fellow Lady Astronaut Trainees” and the “Mercury Thirteen.”

The First Woman on the Moon

The early space program inspired a generation of scientists and engineers. Now, as we embark on our Artemis program to return humanity to the lunar surface by 2024, we have the opportunity to inspire a whole new generation. The prospect of sending the first woman to the Moon is an opportunity to influence the next age of women explorers and achievers.

NASA LEADERSHIP ASSESSING MISSION IMPACTS OF CORONAVIRUS To protect the health and safety of the NASA workforce as the nation responds to coronavirus (COVID-19), agency leadership recently completed the first assessment of work underway across all missions, projects, and programs. The goal was to identify tasks that can be done remotely by employees at home, mission-essential work that must be performed on-site, and on-site work that will be paused. “We are going to take care of our people. That’s our first priority,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. “Technology allows us to do a lot of what we need to do remotely, but, where hands-on work is required, it is difficult or impossible to comply with CDC guidelines while processing spaceflight hardware, and where we can’t safely do that we’re going to have to suspend work and focus on the mission critical activities.” The agency has defined mission-essential work as that which must be performed to maintain critical mission operations to ensure the schedule of time-sensitive mission-critical launches, or work to protect life and critical infrastructure. This includes work to support America’s national security and mission-essential functions for the nation. NASA leadership will continually assess all activities as the situation evolves. NASA’s Mars 2020 mission, which includes the Perseverance Rover and Mars Helicopter, remains a high priority for the agency, and launch and other mission preparations will continue. Much of the work is being done by employees and contractors who work remotely across the agency. Assessments by agency leadership are underway for anyone required to work in areas under restriction, such as NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, especially after the recent announcement by California’s governor. The James Webb Space Telescope team, also in California, is suspending integration and testing operations. Decisions could be adjusted as the situation continues to unfold over the weekend and into next week. The decision was made to ensure the safety of the workforce. The observatory remains safe in its cleanroom environment. Also in California, work continues by Lockheed Martin on X-59 NASA’s first large-scale, piloted X-plane in more than 30 years, while NASA oversight and inspections will be conducted almost exclusively virtually. Work on the agency’s Artemis program continues with limited production of hardware and software for NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. SLS and Orion manufacturing and testing activities at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility and Stennis Space Center are temporarily on hold. The Artemis 1 Orion spacecraft will be shipped from the agency’s Glenn Research Center to its Kennedy Space Center where it eventually will be attached on top of SLS for the Artemis I lunar mission. Assembly and processing work is continuing on the Artemis II Orion spacecraft at Kennedy. Since the Human Landing System program leverages capabilities across the agency, it already functions as a virtual team to conduct engineering analysis and other work, and it has seen minimal impact from the requirement for mandatory telework. Most development work on the Gateway program continues and can be done remotely, however, any on-site activity beyond securing hardware is temporarily suspended until further notice. NASA’s Ames Research Center is keeping the agency’s supercomputing resources online, as well as the NASA IT Security Operations Center and in-flight spacecraft operations. All work associated with supporting International Space Station operations continues. Flight controllers are working in the Mission Control Center at Johnson Space Center in Houston, where a number of additional measures went into effect in early March to reduce the risk of exposure to the team. Astronaut training continues, as do preparations for the launch April 9 of NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy and two Russian cosmonauts. NASA and its international and commercial partners always take steps to prevent the crew from bringing illnesses like the cold or flu to the International Space Station. As with all crewed launches, crews must stay in quarantine for two weeks before they launch. This process ensures that they aren’t sick or incubating an illness when they get to the space station and is called “health stabilization.” Work also continues on the agency’s Commercial Crew Program, a critical element to maintaining safe operations on the International Space Station and a sustained U.S. presence on the orbiting laboratory. Commercial resupply activities and future missions also will go on as scheduled in order to keep the space station crew fully supplied and safe. NASA also is supporting mission-essential operations for all spacecraft. This encompasses the Hubble Space Telescope and space communications network, as well as satellite missions that support the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration and Department of Defense, including those that provide critical weather and GPS data. Most of the agency remains under a Stage 3 status, with mandatory telework for all employees with limited exceptions for on-site work. Ames, Michoud, and Stennis are at Stage 4 with personnel on-site to protect life and critical infrastructure. NASA leadership continues to monitor developments regarding COVID-19 around the nation and follow the guidance from the White House Coronavirus Task Force, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and local and state health officials in order to keep the NASA community safe.

His family life isn’t perfect, his job isn’t ideal, but he has (Y/n), the woman he loves. Sam Winchester never thought his life would turn out the way it did. He is divorced, alone, and his brother most likely hates him. Working for NASA was not going to be easy. But, when a threat to the earth has him calling on his family for help, what can he do? can Sam and Dean push past his family issues to keep the Earth spinning another day? Dean’s Apartment

Austin, TX

Dean awoke to the sound of someone bowing before the porcelain throne. He reached over for (Y/n) and his eyes snapped open when her side was empty. Throwing the covers off himself he rushed to the bathroom and knocked softly on the door.

“(Y/n), sweetheart, you ok in there?” he called out.

He could hear the faint sounds the the toilet flushing and the faucet running before the door opened. (Y/n) stumbled out of the bathroom and groaned.

“Never let me drink blue long islands ever again!” she moaned.

Dean had the brilliant Idea to head to the store and make her some mixed drinks as he cooked for the three of them. (Y/n) and Dean pushed Sam to stay longer and eat and rest some more. Dean chuckled softly as he helped (Y/n) with the bottle of aspirin and a glass of water.  

“But you’re all cute and snuggly when you’re drunk,” Dean teased as he kissed her head. “So, hangover cure for breakfast?”

“Yes please,” (Y/n) moaned, “With lots and lots of bacon!”

“That’s my girl,” Dean winked at her. He looked at Sam out on the balcony, talking on an ugly cell phone. He was pacing back and forth, seeming to satisfy his need to be moving. (Y/n) looked over at him.

“Still can’t stay still?” (Y/n) asked with a laugh. Dean chuckled.

“Guess he can’t,” Dean breathed as he placed the finished meal in front of her.

Taking a strip of bacon, (Y/n) moaned as she took a bite, “all hail the king of bacon!” she sighed.

Sam took that moment to walk in and smiled.

“Thanks for letting me crash, I um… It was nice,” Sam smiled as he sat by (Y/n). “I really need to get back to Houston though. We don’t have much time.”

“Ok, well you need breakfast first!” Dean placed a plate in front of Sam, “Not sure what they are feeding you in NASA, but you look thin.”

“I don’t really get to eat much. Maybe one meal a day.” Sam admitted. Dean frowned a little, but Sam didn’t seem to notice. “So Dean, if you don’t come with me back to Houston, I’m going to have to take your spot on the shuttle and…” Dean raised his hand to stop him.

“I’m coming,” Dean chuckled, “on the condition that you eat.” Dean crossed his arms and raised his eyebrow at his brother.

(Y/n) gave a small smirk and a wink at Dean as he placed a plate in front of Sam.

“Now, are you going to eat? Or are we going to do this like when we were kids?” Dean leaned on the counter and gave Sam a smile.  

“I don’t need the airplane trick.” Sam laughed. He ate his bacon and smiled some. It was nice having a home cooked meal. The last time he had had one was before his and Jessica’s relationship got rocky. “Thanks man. This was good.”

“OK,” (Y/n) stretched abit, “You two have a good trip,” She grabbed her empty plate and placed it in the sink. “I’m going to finish packing the rest of the stuff here and head to my apartment to pack.”

“It was great seeing you (Y/n).” Sam kissed her cheek. “Hopefully next time, you have more clothes.” He chuckled some. “You know, you can come with us if you want.”

“I don’t know Sam, I might be in the way,” (Y/n) gave him a quick hug before disappearing into the room.

“Dean, she’s welcome to come. I think she’d have fun.” Sam smiled at him.

“Yeah, and she could keep me distracted from Dad,” Dean breathed. “I’ll pack up the Impala and be on the road in five, I just have to convince her to come with me.”

“Okay I’m going to go ahead and get going. I’ve got a few things to oversee and stuff. And I’m good to go for another 48 hours at least.” He smiled. “I’ll see you in Houston.” Sam left then, heading to his car. Dean made his way to the bedroom and wrapped his arms around (Y/n).

“Babe, come with me.” Dean mumbled, kissing her. “It can be like a little vacation. Once I get those nerds trained, we can go have some fun before this big scary asteroid hits.” He chuckled a little. He didn’t know just how big it was.

“Dean,” (Y/n) sighed, “I don’t know,” She wrapped her arms around his neck, “I have a lot to do here and at my apartment and we …. oh no… don’t give me the puppy look please.”

“Please.” Dean said, giving her that look that made her melt. “We’ll have plenty of time to pack up. And we can always hire movers to help.”

(Y/n) placed her forehead against his taking his his scent, leather, whiskey, and the rig. “Fine,” she gave in, “But the minute, and I mean the minute I am in the way… I am coming straight back here, go it?”

“Okay, but you won’t be in the way.” He smiled at her. “Promise.”

Houston, Texas

“This place is trippy.” Ash said, looking around at the room. “Are we under arrest or something?”

“I’ve dealt with my fair share of cops mate,” Ketch explained. “And they wouldn’t have sent John by himself to get us.”

“Plus, we’re at NASA.” Garth added. Benny set there silently by John, looking around. The door opened then and Sam walked in, fresh from a quick shower after his trip from Austin.

“Sammy boy!” Ketch laughed. “Good to see you!”

John crossed his arms and shook his head, “I thought Dean would be with you?”

“He’s on his way. He should be here any minute.” Sam told him. “I was told that you had demands though you wanted me to deliver to the directors?”

“Yeah, we uh, wrote them down.” Ash handed sam a piece of paper. Sam scanned it.

“You want a stripper party before the launch?” Sam asked. “Let me guess, Ash?”

“Hey man, I got needs.” Ash said. “And my needs are for some hot, half naked ladies in my lap.”

John placed his head in his hands and groaned, as he heard the demands. He gave an apologetic look to Sam. However, he couldn’t help but chuckle at the imagination of his employees.

“Ketch wants a jet made out of gold,” Sam sighed. “Ketch, we can’t make a jet out of gold.”

“I am a man of refined taste,” he smiled and gave Ash a high five.  

“Benny wants an island in the Pacific?” Sam asked at him and Benny just shrugged.

“I want a place to launch my fishing boats from.” Benny explained.

“Garth wants marijuana to be legal.” Sam sighed. “Dad...wants a key to the Playboy mansion…”

“That’s right John, up top!” Ash said, raising his hand for a high five but just got a glare from John, so Ash slowly lowered it.

“And none of you ever want to pay taxes again. Ever.” Sam smiled a bit. “I’ll see what I can do.” Charlie came in then, smiling awkwardly at everyone.

“Uh, Sam, there’s a guy claiming to be your brother here.” She told him. Sam smiled.

“I’ll take these to Director Singer. I’ll be right back.” Sam left the guys sitting in the room. Charlie gave an awkward wave before following him out.

Garth leaned in towards Ash, “are we going to duck and cover when things explode?”

“Hey man, that turtle from childhood taught me all about that.” Ash laughed. “I think I got that mastered.”

“Yeah, well, I don’t want to be in here when Dean and John start taking blows at each other,” Ketch breathed as he sank down in his chair.

“This is why marijuana should be legal.” Garth laughed. “Everyone would be so mellow.”

Sam walked in with Dean and (Y/n) right behind him. Dean sat at the opposite side of the table from John. Sam could just feel the tension in the air.

“Right, so Director Singer is going to come in and brief you all on everything,” Sam told them.

“Good to see you finally made it Dean,” John drawled as he glared at his son.  

“John,” (Y/n) warned.

“Anyone want anything to drink?” Sam asked. “Water, soda, tea, whiskey? God knows I could use that.” Bobby came in then and smiled at Sam.

“Hello gentlemen,” He rubbed his eyes as he walked in, “As you know, we have a bit of a situation that needs to be dealt with.” He took a seat at the head of the table. “Now, you all should have been briefed about the asteroid that is on it’s way towards us.”

“More or less,” John leaned on the table.

“Each day it’s getting closer.” Sam told them. “If we don’t do something soon, then we’re all dead.”

“So, we will send you guys up into space, to help our guys drill onto the surface of the asteroid,” Bobby said as he stood to show them the diagram of the operation.

“Wait, wait. Hold up.” (Y/n) said. “You’re sending them into space?”

“I thought we were just teaching your nerds how to use the drill.” Dean added.

“Unfortunately, we don’t have time for you to teach our… nerds… how to use an enormous power tool,” Bobby drawled. “We are going to train you to go up there with them.”

“Then I’m adding to my demands.” Ash said. “Strippers aren’t just going to cut it.”

“Yes, I believe my gold jet might need a few adjustments,” Ketch added.

“Guys, just calm down.” Sam told them. “It’s not that bad. You don’t have to do spacewalks or anything like that. You’re just drilling, but in space. We’ve set up a zero gravity simulator for you to test it out.”

(Y/n) felt Dean squeeze her thigh. She knew how he felt about flying, and now he was asked to go into space. She could see his eyes focusing on a spot on the table. She leaned in, close to his ear.

“It’s going to be ok,” she whispered before kissing his cheek.

“We’ll be introducing you to the astronaut team after your physicals,” Bobby explained. “Sam will be available if you have any questions. I’m putting him to work on our bomb that we are taking up there.”

Dean stood up and headed to the door grabbing Sam by the collar and taking him outside. Rubbing his hands on his face he took a deep breath.

“When were you going to tell me you were going to put me on a rocket to space?” Dean crossed his arms as he looked at Sam.  

“I thought I told you.” Sam said. “I honestly wasn’t sure if they were going through with it though Dean. I’m sorry.”

“I can’t,” Dean shook his head, “ I can train the guys, but I can’t go up there,” Dean croaked. “Hell, (Y/n) has to practically knock me out to get on a normal plane, or even on the chopper to get on and off the rig.”

“I mean, I can go.” Sam told him. “It won’t be a big deal. I just need you to train them and I can go in your place…”

“Uh, NO! No way,” Dean glared at Sam. “You are going to stay right here, because if anything happens up there…. I know I can count on you to watch (Y/n).”

“Nothing’s going to happen.” Sam said. “But if I go up there instead, you’ll be here to be with her. And you won’t have to worry about the rockets or anything.”

“Yeah Dad would love that idea,” Dean muttered, “I’ll do it… just… you need to stay safe ok.”

“Okay, okay.” Sam patted his shoulder. “I’ll let you and (Y/n) stay at my house while you’re here so you don’t have to do the hotel. And Sadie misses you.” Sam smiled. “I need to get to the testing range for the bomb. You have my cell number.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Dean sighed, “At least (Y/n) is going to have fun with Sadie….” Dean smiled, “Hey you still have that jacuzzi?”

“Yes but please clean it after you do your nasty thing in there.” Sam sighed.

“What? Us? Do nasty things, in a jacuzzi?” Dean feigned innocence.

“Don’t you remember when Jess and I bought the house and you were in the tub with the next door neighbor?” Sam asked, crossing his arms. “And I think there were some bathing suits missing. And her husband wasn’t exactly happy.”

“Oh… yeah… Let’s not tell (Y/n) about that… that was way before we started going out….” Dean rubbed the back of his neck.

“I won’t. It’ll be a funny story for your bachelor party.” Sam laughed, elbowing Dean. “Anyway, I really gotta go. Call me when your done and I’ll give you the key to the house. I had to have the locks changed after someone broke in.”

“Why am I hearing about this now?” Dean asked.

“You were busy. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal.” Sam shrugged and headed towards the bomb range. “We’ll talk more over dinner!”

“Yeah, yeah,” Deam called after him.

John walked out of the room. He froze seeing Dean pacing back and forth. John knew that his son was nervous. If they weren’t fighting, he might have told him a few words to calm down. He wasn’t sure what to say. Dean looked up as he saw his dad.

“Did you know Sam’s house was broken into?” Dean asked, staring down his dad.

“It was no big deal, he handled it,” John crossed his arms.

“It’s Sam!” Dean said. “He’s still my little brother!”

“What do you care? You’re going to be working for Crowley anyways! You’ll be in Louisiana, long gone and away from Sam.” John bellowed.

“Well if someone would realize that me and Sam aren’t the same person, maybe I wouldn’t be going!” Dean yelled back. “I don’t know if I can work with you on this!”

“Well jokes on you, they said I’m too old!” John turned and stormed off, leaving Dean standing there.

Traditionally held on the fourth Thursday in January each year, NASA Day of Remembrance will commemorate the crews of Apollo 1 and space shuttles Challenger and Columbia.   NASA Administrator Bill Nelson, Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy, and Associate Administrator Jim Free also will host a town hall at the agency’s headquarters in Washington at 1 p.m. EST on Tuesday, Jan. 23.   In a dialogue with employees, the leaders will highlight how NASA safety is the cornerstone to achieving mission success. The town hall will air live on the NASA+ streaming service. Coverage also will air live on NASA Television and the agency’s website. Learn how to  stream NASA TV through a variety of platforms, including social media.  On Jan. 25, Nelson will lead an observance with Melroy and Free at 1 p.m. EST at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, which will begin with a traditional wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, followed by observances for the Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia crews.  “Our annual Day of Remembrance honors the sacrifice of the NASA family who lost their lives in the pursuit of discovery,” said Nelson. “While it is a solemn day, we are forever thankful that our fallen heroes shared their spirt of exploration with NASA, our country, and the world. Today, and every day, we embrace NASA’s core value of safety as we expand our reach in the cosmos for the benefit of all humanity.”  The administrator will send an agencywide message to employees. Additional agency centers also will hold observances for NASA Day of Remembrance:   Johnson Space Center, Houston  NASA Johnson will hold a commemoration at the Astronaut Memorial Grove at 10 a.m. CST. The ceremony will include remarks by Johnson Director Vanessa Wyche. This event will feature a moment of silence, NASA T-38 flyover, taps performed by the Texas A&M Squadron 17, and a tree dedication for former NASA astronaut Karol Bobko.  Kennedy Space Center, Florida  NASA Kennedy, in partnership with The Astronauts Memorial Foundation, will host a Day of Remembrance ceremony at the Space Mirror Memorial at Kennedy’s Visitor Complex at 10 a.m. EST. Kathie Fulgham, Astronaut Memorial Foundation chairman and daughter of former NASA astronaut Dick Scobee, will serve as the master of ceremonies. Scobee served as the commander of the space shuttle Challenger.   Kennedy’s Associate Director in Management, Burt Summerfield, will provide remarks during the ceremony, which will livestream on Kennedy’s Facebook, X, and YouTube pages.  Ames Research Center, California  NASA Ames will hold a remembrance ceremony at 1 p.m. PST that includes remarks from Center Director Dr. Eugene Tu, a moment of silence, and bell ringing commemoration.  Glenn Research Center, Cleveland  NASA Glenn will observe Day of Remembrance with remarks at 1 p.m. EST from Center Director Dr. Jimmy Kenyon followed by wreath placement, moment of silence, and taps at Lewis Field​.  Langley Research Center, Hampton, Virginia  NASA Langley will hold a remembrance ceremony with Center Director Clayton Turner and Acting Deputy Director Lisa Ziehmann followed by placing flags at the Langley Workers Memorial.  Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama  NASA Marshall will hold a candle-lighting ceremony and wreath placement at 9 a.m. CST. Branson flies to edge of space on SpaceShipTwo

SPACEPORT AMERICA, N.M. — Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson and five other people flew to the edge of space on the company’s SpaceShipTwo suborbital vehicle July 11, the culmination of an effort that started nearly 17 years ago.

The SpaceShipTwo vehicle, named VSS Unity, took off from Spaceport America in the southern New Mexican desert at 10:40 a.m. Eastern, attached to its WhiteKnightTwo aircraft. Takeoff was delayed by 90 minutes because of weather overnight that slowed launch preparations. The vehicles flew to an altitude of about 13,700 meters before WhiteKnightTwo released Unity at 11:25 a.m. Eastern.

Unity then ignited its hybrid rocket motor for a burn lasting 60 seconds. The suborbital spaceplane flew to an altitude of 85.9 kilometers, then glided back to Earth, landing on the runway at the spaceport at 11:38 a.m. Eastern to complete what the company called the “Unity 22” mission.

The vehicle was piloted by Dave Mackay and Mike Masucci, who previously flew on the second SpaceShipTwo flight to space in February 2019. Mackay also piloted Unity on its previous flight from Spaceport America May 22.

For the first time, Virgin Galactic flew four people in the vehicle’s cabin in addition to the two pilots. Beth Moses, chief astronaut instructor at the company who flew with Mackay and Masucci in 2019, served as the test director for cabin activities. Colin Bennett, lead operations engineer at Virgin Galactic, evaluated cabin equipment and procedures. Sirisha Bandla, vice president of government affairs and research operations at Virgin Galactic, evaluated the ability to do human-tended research by performing a plant experiment from the University of Florida arranged through NASA’s Flight Opportunities program.

However, the person on the flight that attracted the most attention was Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson, dubbed “Astronaut 001” by the company in promotional materials. Virgin Galactic’s previous plans were to fly Branson on the next SpaceShipTwo flight in the vehicle’s test program. However, the company announced July 1 that Branson would be part of this crew to “evaluate the private astronaut experience” that the company will offer to future customers.

“As part of a remarkable crew of mission specialists, I’m honored to help validate the journey our future astronauts will undertake and ensure we deliver the unique customer experience people expect from Virgin,” Branson said in the July 1 announcement of his flight.

“Tapping into Sir Richard’s expertise and long history of creating amazing customer experiences will be invaluable as we work to open the wonder of space travel and create awe-inspiring journeys for our customers,” Michael Colglazier, chief executive of Virgin Galactic, said in the same statement.

Long journey to space

In that same statement, Branson alluded to the long path to get to this flight. “After more than 16 years of research, engineering, and testing, Virgin Galactic stands at the vanguard of a new commercial space industry,” he said.

Branson announced plans for Virgin Galactic in September 2004, agreeing to license technology developed by Scaled Composites for its SpaceShipOne suborbital vehicle, at the time on the cusp of winning the $10 million Ansari X Prize. At the time, Virgin projected beginning commercial service within a few years.

Extended delays in the development of what became known as SpaceShipTwo repeatedly pushed out the start of commercial service, a process punctuated by tragedy. In 2007, three Scaled Composites employees were killed and three others injured during a test of the hybrid propulsion system the company was developing for SpaceShipTwo.

In October 2014, the first SpaceShipTwo, VSS Enterprise, broke apart in flight when co-pilot Mike Alsbury prematurely unlocked the feathering mechanism that raises the vehicle’s twin booms for reentry. Alsbury died and pilot Peter Siebold was seriously injured.

Virgin Galactic rolled out VSS Unity in February 2016 and, after a series of glide and powered test flights, finally reached the altitude the company considered space — 50 miles (80 kilometers), the point at which U.S. government agencies award astronaut wings — on a December 2018 flight from the Mojave Air and Space Port in California. The company performed a second flight beyond 80 kilometers in February 2019 before doing additional work on the vehicle, including upgrades to a horizontal stabilizer that suffered damage in the February 2019 flight.

Virgin Galactic shifted operations from Mojave to Spaceport America in early 2020. However, the first powered flight to space from the spaceport, in December, was aborted at engine ignition because of a computer reset. It took the company several months to complete modifications the vehicle’s electronics, which were successfully tested on the May 22 flight.

Battle of the billionaires

Branson’s decision to go on this flight rather than the later one as previously planned appeared to be a game of one-upmanship with Virgin’s rival, Blue Origin, and its own billionaire founder, Jeff Bezos.

Blue Origin announced May 5 that, after 15 uncrewed tests of its New Shepard suborbital vehicle, it would fly people for the first time on New Shepard on July 20. The company did not immediately disclose who would be on board beyond announcing an auction for one of the seats, with the proceeds going to Club for the Future, an educational nonprofit affiliated with Blue Origin.

Bezos then announced June 7 that he would be on that first flight along with his brother Mark. On July 1, just hours before Virgin Galactic revealed that Branson would be on the upcoming SpaceShipTwo flight, Blue Origin said that the third person would be Wally Funk, one of the “Mercury 13” women who underwent astronaut tests in the early 1960s but never given the opportunity to fly in space. Blue Origin has not yet disclosed the identity of the fourth person, who submitted the winning bid of $28 million for the seat in the auction that closed June 12.

Branson’s decision to fly nine days before Bezos is the latest round in the rivalry between the two billionaires and their companies. On July 9, Blue Origin published an infographic that compared the two companies’ vehicles. It boasted of the “largest windows in space” on New Shepard compared to “airplane-sized windows” on SpaceShipTwo, as well as an escape system on New Shepard that SpaceShipTwo lacks and a “minimal” impact on the ozone layer.

It also highlighted the differences in altitude the two vehicles reach. While SpaceShipTwo has not flown higher than about 90 kilometers, New Shepard routinely exceeds 100 kilometers on its flights, putting it above the 100-kilometer Kármán Line frequently used as one definition of space. Blue Origin called the Kármán Line the “internationally recognized boundary of space” although that boundary has no international legal significance.

Blue Origin’s decision to publish that infographic two days before Branson’s flight struck many as petty. The argument is not new, though: in an interview in February 2019 Bezos warned that those who fly on SpaceShipTwo might not be considered astronauts. “We’ve always had as our mission that we always wanted to fly above the Kármán Line because we didn’t want there to be any asterisks next to your name about whether you’re an astronaut or not,” he said, comparing New Shepard with SpaceShipTwo. “And so that’s something they’re going to have to address in my opinion.”

Bezos and Blue Origin were more conciliatory in an Instagram post the day before the flight. “Wishing you and the whole team a successful and safe flight tomorrow,” Bezos wrote. “Best of luck!”
