Asili: Freak Out

Way ahead of you, buddy. Freedom’s fists is torn from your shirt and you sink onto the deck. The sound of waves cutting into the ship is drilling into your spine and ears. It hurts, and you want to crawl into a dark space and lie down until it all stops.

The metal key with that eye staring at you. Orange-yellow. Bright. Hungry. It has you. Sees you for who you truly are.

Small, feet partering in the space too large, all those eyes either grazing over, or turning upon you with gleeful malice. As long as you are useful they will refrain from hurting you, they’ll even let you sit by them if your hands are still or if you pour enough kindness around yourself for them to owe… pathetic.

Weak.

You hate the bite of metal digging into your palm. The crew tip toe around it, try to pry the key away from the iron grip in your right hand. Their hands phase through the key as if it was air. The contact between the key and their hands on yours is like raw eggs sliding over your skin. It hurts your eyes to see it. You want them to stop, to just toss the blasted thing into the waves and wash way the sensory stimuli until your skin is raw.

But you know without a shadow of a doubt that if you let go, something bad might happen. Taking it was a mistake, but letting go will be a bigger one.

You tear your gaze away from the eye, only to make eyecontact with your girlfriend. Who is staring at you with bright yellow eyes, wide. She is making those low clicks and rythmic puff of breath that is between you two alone. Her worry is crashing down on you in waves.

And you.

Just.

Oh, the ingrained response of not really trusting your own judgement, so you look to others to do it.

Recent example, a customer that comes in every day AND my niece has told me to chill and just. Treat the job as a job and not care that much. The world doesn’t end if the bread is late (AGAIN) this morning.

Who cares if a customer reported that someone working the cashier was sour? It’s retail, that can mean anything, it doesn’t neccesarily mean it’s me. No reason to agonize over it.

So yeah, I’ll try to chill more. Outsourcing my own judgemental skills. Like a boss.
