Kelley Walker, “Pioneer PL-518 7-inch Series Love (Is The Answer)” (2015), Pantone 4-color process silkscreen with acrylic ink on MDF
The work above is Kelley Walker’s Pioneer PL-518 7-inch Series Love (Is The Answer) (2015) from the exhibition Terry Adkins, Christian Marclay, Kelley Walker, that was on view at Paula Cooper Gallery in NYC this past March.
From the gallery about Kelley Walker-
Known for his manipulation of long-circulating images from advertising and other sources, Kelley Walker examines the consumption of visual culture using collage, screen-printing, sculpture, and installation. Bose Glitter Stock (2016) and Untitled (Screen to Screen) (2017) contain montages of superimposed silkscreen images printed on polyester mesh substrate, the armature for screen printing. Pioneer PL-518 7-inch Series Love (Is The Answer) (2015) is a grid of silkscreened panels that reproduce vinyl records and their packaging. Walker referenced the legendary Pioneer brand of turntables, famously advertised by Andy Warhol, as part of his investigation into the visual culture of the 1970s and 1980s New York disco scene.
Below is the song that the title references. It is included among the records pictured and is from the Four Tops album, Still Waters Run Deep.

Thanks to Bottleneck Gallery and ISH, Bryan Lee O’Malley travels to the NYC sewers for the first time with a brand new anniversary variant comic cover and print celebrating 40 years of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and 25 years of IDW Comics! As BNG explained, “We know we confidently exclaimed that this is Bryan’s first foray into TMNT art, but the truth is, Bryan has been drawing the turtles and playing in their awesome, mutant-filled sewers since childhood. We’re honored, and stoked, to be able to release officially licensed comics and prints with Bryan’s TMNT art, and we’ve been poring over the details since we first saw the image. Drawing from the original comics, video games, and his own memories of the Turtles, Bryan’s image is a four-brother beat ‘em up with the Turtles coming to April O’Neil’s rescue!” Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #2 Variant Cover by Bryan Lee O’Malley is a 24”x36”hand numbered 16 color screen print.  The Red Mask Edition is limited to 100 pieces and will retail for $70, while the Color Mask Editoin is limited to 150 pieces and will retail for $70. 2.3.2024
friends fall by the wayside but we don't want to let them go, lest some precipice open its lip and swallow them whole.
what to do with all the feelings that come up? how to write them before they are dampened?
how to write about feelings when you're so accustomed to big feelings that they don't even feel so big anymore?
i haven't written an update in the better part of a week. i've been crocheting a lot, mostly. i'm making a shrug for myself, with big flared sleeves. it's coming along - the neck/chest is complete, and i'm almost done with one whole sleeve. then i gotta crochet the next sleeve and it'll be complete.
i've also been depresso sauce. i guess. not anything sensational, just the afternoon doomies reaching down from gray skies to wrap around me.
i think it's from the antibiotics. but maybe it's from lack of sunlight. but i'm taking vitamin d! maybe it's from being alone in this big house for hours while dillon and jules work all day. maybe it's from having the energy sucked out of me by spirochetes.
i don't know what to say. i gotta say something. i'm here. i'm shitting regularly again, at least. i ate a burger two nights ago, and salmon last night, after going too long without a good hunk of meat. i felt so weak. i feel a little less feeble since i got some boosts of protein.
my one friend in particular, whose name i won't mention (i don't want to put his shit on blast) is going through it. he always is. he has been for several years. we met at my third high school, city-as, the one i actually graduated from. we had a class together and sat next to each other and found out that both of us were really into film and wanted to make movies. we swapped movie recs, we talked about cinematography. he was also a talented photographer of all things very nyc. all of us city-as homies used to go to what we called "thirsty thursdays" at the galleries in chelsea. the school was in the west village. after school on thursdays, like clockwork, we'd trek up to chelsea and go to free gallery openings, where we'd look at the art and get drunk off of free wine and beer that they served at these things. it was awesome. sometimes, we'd sneak into gallery stairwells to smoke weed. sometimes we'd walk the couple blocks to riverside park to light up. either way, this was definitely a highlight every week. this friend of mine, he would come. and later, after we'd all graduated, he actually had a show there! his debut photography exhibit. this kid could go places. he had something, a special kind of sight, that he gave us all through his photographs. he's still around, but for the last several years, pretty much since high school (almost ten years ago, jesus! i feel old) he's been dealing with dope addiction. he can't afford a phone, hasn't been able to for years, but we keep in touch over instagram, which he sometimes gets to access on other people's phones, and he calls me every so often from random numbers. he usually is asking for money. i throw down, because i love this kid. i want him to be safe and i don't want him to have to do sex work for money because i know for a fact that he hates it. anyway, he called me last week for money. i told him i could send him a few bucks, but that i'm broke and what money i do have came from my gofundme and it's set aside exclusively to be used for lyme disease treatment.
i dunno why i felt the need to write about this. maybe because i'm just sad. i'm sad for him, for the loss of his father to suicide, for his dreams and his brilliance shelved. i know what it's like to be deep in addiction, and it hurts so goddamned much to know all i can do is be here for him. it hurts so much to know that i can't make things easier, that i can't make him want to stop using. i just hope he keeps up with his art - he's also a brilliant writer, by the way - and that he finds a way to keep at it and share it with the world. and i hope he stays safe and warm and out of harm's way.

NorseA blessed start to you on this second day of the week called Monday. Monday originates from the Norse God of the Moon Mani. If you ask for a psychic answer to your questions I will channel the god appropriate to the day. The exception is Thor who I can seldomly reach. Even the powerful Vikings stopped praying to him before battle at some point in history. I will explain that later, perhaps on blessed Thursday. 🔥⚡👽🌟🦋👑🌷 The magic holster I spent an entire summer to bring to this realm! The original & mold were among those destroyed/stolen. I made one chilly 4 a customer but I cannot get in touch with him. 8 ways to celebrate Native American Heritage Month and ART’N Month in Tampa Bay this November
November is Native American Heritage Month and ART’n Month. Here are eight ways to celebrate in Tampa Bay.
1. Watch The Dali’s “Coffee with a Curator: The Cultural Legacy of Native American Artists” on YouTube.
The Dali started November by inviting James Museum curators Emily Kapes and Ernest Gendron to discuss Native American art in the James Museum collection as part of their “Coffee with a Curator” series. In the talk, they share work from contemporary Native American artists Tammy Garcia, Allan Houser, Preston Singletary, and Victoria Standing Bear Conroy, all of whom are represented in the James Museum’s permanent collection.
2. Go see Tammy Garcia, Allan Houser, Preston Singletary, and Victoria Standing Bear Conroy’s work at The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art in St. Pete.
I’d be surprised if you didn’t want to see the art in person after hearing about it in the talk (see #1).
While you’re there, don’t miss “From Far East to West: The Chinese American Frontier” which I recently reviewed for Creative Loafing.
3. Experience “Native America: In Translation” via USF CAM.
Wendy Red Star assembled a stellar collection of work from Native American lens-based artists for NYC-based photography magazine Aperture, published in Fall 2020.
Two years later, the collection started traveling the U.S. as “Native America: In Translation.”
Through the end of November, Tampa Bay residents can experience “Native America: In Translation” at the University of South Florida’s Contemporary Art Museum for free (although you will have to drop a couple bucks for parking on ParkMobile).
USF CAM host three special events in conjunction with the exhibition — an indigenous perspectives forum at Barness Hall on Sat. Nov. 4 at 11 a.m., a free film screening of Night Raiders on the lawn Thurs. Nov. 9 and 6:30 p.m., and student led exhibition tours on Thurs. Nov. 30 at 6 and 7 p.m.
4. Attend Creative Pinellas’ Arts Annual Event.
Creative Pinellas’ Arts Annual is ART’n month’s flagship event. This month-long art party + art festival + art exhibition, held at Creative Pinellas in Largo, is the best way to get to know Pinellas County’s arts scene. The party starts Nov. 9, 6-9 p.m.
5. Explore Pinellas County’s arts scene via Creative Pinellas’ ART’n Month scavenger hunt
The second-best way to get to know Pinellas County’s art scene is to participate in Creative Pinellas’ ART’n Month scavenger hunt. The hunt takes participants to art museums, galleries, and public art throughout Pinellas County. All you need do to participate is download the Scavify Scavenger Hunt app on your cell phone, sign up, and start ticking off tasks. I’m documenting the hunt for Creative Pinellas this month, so reach out via social media if you’re participating.
6. Stay in and stream PBS’s Native American & Alaska Native Heritage Month programming. In addition to several documentaries, PBS’s Native American and Alaska Native Month programming leads you into Native American kitchens in “Alter-NATIVE Kitchen” and takes you on a journey of self-discovery with Bezhig Little Bird in the 6-episode series “Little Bird.”
7. Read this month’s issue of Arts Coast Magazine. If you haven’t read Creative Pinellas’ Arts Coast Magazine, now’s a great time to start. It only exists online, but it’s free to read, and it’s organized into categories reflecting the great variety of arts we have in Pinellas County. I wrote stories for the Arts & Education, Literary Arts, and Visual Arts & Film categories this month. But my content is only a small fraction of what’s available to read when you click on the link below.
8. Take a fun online quiz to help you plan your Arts Coast Adventure. If this seems like a lot, that’s probably because it is. There’s always a lot of great art happening in the Tampa Bay area, which is why Creative Pinellas created their Arts Navigator. Click on the link below, take the quiz, and the Arts Navigator will plan a custom Arts Coast Adventure for you. Even if you don’t do the adventure, you should take the quiz. It asks you fun questions like what your spirit animal is.

Ghanaian Painter Tafa: ‘The Painting Is Greater Than The Artist’
The acclaimed artist made his way from Ghana to being feted by New York’s high society and is now showcasing his varied work in a Chelsea exhibition
— Veronica Esposito | Thursday 16 February 2023
Ghanaian artist Tafa Fiadzigbe – known to the art world simply as Tafa – has come a long way. “I grew up in the slums of Ghana, and the slums in the third world are very different from slums here in America,” he said to the Guardian. “I knew people who ate from garbage dumps. When I was growing up, if someone told me I was going to be in the company of people like Bill Clinton and have them support my art, I’d have thought they were crazy.”
Now showing at Chelsea’s Pictor Gallery in New York until 25 February, Tafa’s art is at once visceral, transcendent, and abstract. The pieces at his show include a frenzied protest march against police violence, an ethereal image of a goddess making her ascent, and a homage to Sarah Baartman, a Khoikhoi woman who was exoticized by 19th-century Europeans for her bodily proportions.
Pursuing his vocation, Tafa studied art as a college student in Ghana before setting his sights on New York City. Upon arriving in 1993, he quickly realized he had some major misconceptions about his adopted home. “Originally I thought there were just a few hundred artists in New York. Eventually I realized there were thousands and thousands from all over the world.”
Looking back, Tafa now believes that his lack of knowledge was actually an asset. “Maybe 95% of artists in NYC don’t make a living from their art. I didn’t know how hard it was to make your living from art. If I knew what I knew 10 years later, I probably wouldn’t have done it. I was lucky.”
Tumblr media
Tafa – The Canonization of Sarah Baartman, from 2022. Photograph: Courtesy of the artist
A lauded innovator with the palette knife, Tafa turns countless lumps of color into paintings that cause intense feelings of motion and exuberance. Although his subjects vary widely, frequent themes are the Black struggle for equal rights, the majesty of contemporary sports, and the rhythms and movement of music. Whatever he is composing, for Tafa, dynamism is key.
“When I paint I like movement, and for the paint to be very dynamic. I use layer and layers, I scratch the paint, all to create the balance of movement and a rippling effect. I don’t want it to be static, I want you to feel the movement and power and energy. I want you to hear the sound and voices of the people, the anger and frustration and all that.”
A breakthrough moment happened for Tafa early on in this time in New York when David Dinkins, who was then in office as the city’s first Black mayor, came to one of Tafa’s shows and bought a piece. Besides being a prominent politician, Dinkins was also a known art collector and a fierce advocate for culture, and so was in a position to get Tafa noticed. “Because of Dinkins, a lot of people started coming to me and saying ‘I saw your art.’”
Pictor Gallery’s director Denise Adler happened to meet Tafa by chance when each of their daughters attended the same high school together. She quickly knew that Tafa was an artist she wanted to pay attention to. “When I met him, I realized he was the real deal. I noticed that he was very quiet and subdued, but his work is so colorful and loud. I love his color choices, his use of paint. I’m fascinated with artists who do texture like he does. It has almost a mixed media quality to it.”
Adler added that she was compelled by Tafa’s ability to combine sensual beauty with substance and depth. “The pieces are beautiful to look at, but they speak volumes to serious topics that are interesting. You look at it once and you see one thing, you look at it again and you see another thing. You see more and more as you look more closely. I love that.”
Tumblr media
Tafa - Pelé The King Photograph: Courtesy of the artist
Professional sports has long been a favored subject of Tafa’s, and he shared that his fascination began when he was a young boy mesmerized by the soccer great Pelé. “Being a child in Ghana, everybody played soccer and knew about him,” he said. Looking back, Tafa laughed at how he had naively assumed Pelé was a compatriot: “I didn’t know he was from Brazil. I thought he was from Ghana.”
For Tafa, part of the attraction of sports is the grandeur of competition and the outsized personalities of elite athletes. This can be seen in a work like Pelé the King, which captures the precision and electricity of the soccer legend’s iconic bicycle kick. Melting into a background of bright red with one leg outstretched toward a soccer ball, Pelé looks less like a mortal than a deity.
“When I look at sport, there’s this religious aspect to it,” said Tafa. “To me, as religion becomes less and less important to parts of the world, now it seems like sports is the new religion. We have the gods and the deities and the saints at the sports bar. These are the myths and the gods of our times.”
In his artistic practice Tafa thrives on intuition, losing himself while the painting reveals itself to him. One such experience occurred live in front of a fervent audience at Madison Square Garden, when the artist composed a painting of the game while it played out before him. To Tafa, the pressure of combining performance, athletics, and his artistic vocation made the experience unforgettable. “It was so intense how everybody was looking at me. It was magical and beautiful.”
Frenzied and exhilarating, yet also calculating and controlled, Tafa’s paintings very much look like the product of a man at one with his canvas. His very diverse output is unified by a singular artistic style that speaks to Tafa’s intense connection to his work. “The painting has its own life, the painting is greater than the artist. So the painting takes you to a different direction from where you want to go. The painting sends me messages. It speaks to me – more than I try to control it, it liberates itself.”

EAST MOURNING BUS STATION
LOCATION:
The outskirts of East Mourning
PRICE RANGE:
On average a journey will cost you between $10 and $30 dollars depending on the time of day. Night buses are more expensive, landing at around $35 to make up for the fact that additional services have been provided by the station.
OPENING HOURS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
Monday: 6:00-1:00
Tuesday: 6:00-1:00
Wednesday: 6:00-1:00
Thursday: 6:00-1:00
Friday: 6:00-1:00
Saturday: 6:00-1:00
Sunday: 8:00-23:00
Unfortunately, due to the bus schedule, the buses to the city aren’t always easily accessible to supernatural creatures who need to avoid the sunlight. More often than not, these people will drive themselves, and it isn’t unusual for them to offer others a ride. On occasion a night bus will be supplied, leaving between 24:00 and 1:00, to return from NYC between 3:00 and 5:00. But these buses aren’t as reliable, or frequent.
Schedules are available online, through the help desk, and you are also able to view them on the screens within the bus station.
DESCRIPTION:
Due to East Mourning’s close proximity to New York City, the bus station has become somewhat of a hub. If you’re looking for affordable transport, this is undoubtedly the place to go. Buses run into the early hours of the morning but many humans avoid travelling after nightfall. It hasn’t gone unnoticed that the… clientele get steadily more questionable after the sun begins to set. Buses become less frequent after 18:00 but are still ready to take you to the city, and its neighbouring boroughs. The journey to New York City only takes 40 minutes so many East Mourning residents consider it worth the trip.
There is a small help desk inside the building, alongside a sparse room where you can hide from the elements while you are waiting for your bus to arrive. The coffee machine probably needed to be replaced five years ago, and only produces lukewarm coffee but it’s something, at least. The light in the vending machine has long since gone out, but it still deposits your snacks if you’re lucky.
Destinations include:
Byport (30 minutes): A small suburb with some great picturesque locations. It’s a popular destination for hiking through the surrounding forest, and for camping. Rumours of Bigfoot are abound, but has anybody ever actually seen him? Regardless of sightings, be sure to pick up a ‘I saw Bigfoot and all I got was this lousy t shirt’ shirt from the Sasquatch Settlers Camping Grounds gift shop.
Edgeburn (20 minutes): A town slightly larger than East Mourning. It doesn’t have many attractions but people often visit to see the large array of ‘Instagrammable’ coffee shops. There’s also a beautiful old fashioned sweet store, with an adjoining café famous for its hot chocolates. If you’re looking for ideas, this town has more than a few impressive options for a first date.
Morpond (30 minutes): Morpond is a small village filled with friendly locals, and welcoming pubs. There’s a strong community of artists, meaning pottery shops, art supply stores, modest galleries, and upcycling thrift stores are all incredibly common here.

May Musings
I have officially done a year’s worth of these monthly roundup posts.
Tumblr media
Is it clear how much I love to write them? I guess I’ll keep doing them until they become a bother. Here’s what went down in May!
I’m still screaming from the rooftops about how great Booksmart was, can’t get over it.
Losing my mind over how good these Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Almond Butter Cups are.
And look, I tried to try more of the collagen powder but Nathan finished it all (and his hair has been looking pretty good lately now that I think about it) and I’m waiting to get more. I promise to finally take this regularly next month.
One of the regulars in my snack rotation has been these zucchini pizza bites that are surprisingly delightful, especially if you’re adding sopressata and/or jalapeños as part of the toppings.
I saw Jason Mantzoukas walking in Soho and he was so handsome I was afraid to say anything. Like alarmingly handsome. I knew he was good looking, but in real life? Whoa.
I am in love with this font. Someone tell me if it has a name.
Tumblr media
I attempted to start season two of Barry, but it’s been so long since I saw the first season that I forgot most of what has happened. Could I have just rewatched the finale of season one and then moved on to number two? Sure. Will I? Now that’s another question.
Someone was singing this on the subway and I’d never heard it before, but Jesus Christ. So lovely.
This was a pretty heavy podcast month for me (kill me for that sentence), I did three of them! The first one is with Nathan talking about the new apartment, the second one is with Irene talking advice and the third one is with Nathan again talking abortion.
I just bought a pair of these heavenly, high-waisted, button-fly Gap jeans and I think everyone should go buy them ($42 right now with the sale), they fit like a dream. I might go back and get another pair in a different colour. Actually, yeah. I’m definitely doing that.
Ate at La Contenta and it was absolutely nothing special. Everything was too salty, overpriced and crowded.
I’ve already made three batches of these banana walnut muffins, they’re so perfect for the morning or for a snack. Ignore that they’re paleo, I promise you they’re good. Definitely not a party muffin, but a good-for-you muffin.
So excited that people will finally stop talking about Game of Thrones. Usually I don’t mind when other people love something that I don’t care about, but with this show it’s just been overkill. We get it. It was a show. Let’s move on?
So excited to hear that there’s going to be a new Mindy Kaling book next summer!
Nobody told me about how smokey it gets when you attempt to make burgers in your kitchen at home? Or was everyone aware of this already but me?
I just bought pink sunglasses (at Nathan’s encouragement) and I just became cool. May 2019. That’s when it happened. (I’d post of photo of them but I’ll be wearing them until I’m cold and dead in the ground, so believe me, you’ll see them on me soon.)
I can’t believe how good this looks. I love it when fall movies just say fuck it and come out in late summer.
I can’t say that I 100% relate to everything in this piece, but some parts of it are so on the money: “Men Have No Friends and Women Bear The Burden.“
I tried the mozzarella sticks at Big Mozz in Chelsea Market and whoa. They’re pretty serious. The tomato sauce that comes with them is insanity, too.
My niece Tianna came to visit New York for the first time! Some highlights: I finally ate a cronut and they’re waaaaay too sweet, and coming from me that should mean something because I love all things dessert. Maybe it’s because we ate it so early in the morning? I don’t know. I really don’t understand the big deal about them, though. We also walked through Chinatown and down to the financial district to get lunch at Manhatta, which was lovely. I forced her to eat my favourite pad thai at Lovely Day in Soho. We shared a cheese plate at The Cellar at Beecher’s, walked around the west village to see the Friends building and the stoop from The Cosby Show, we had dinner at L’Artusi where she had her first steak tartare. We walked through Grand Central Terminal to get to the dog museum (which is cute as hell), we saw and went backstage at the musical Waitress, had dinner at Shake Shack, saw the 9/11 memorial, shopped at Century 21, walked the Brooklyn Bridge, got pizza at Juliana’s (which wasn’t as good as I remembered?), walked with Baby Dog in Central Park to see the Balto statue, perused Chelsea Market and walked along The High Line, went to the galleries on Thursday night where we met Luis Guzman (!), and ate gelato at Grom. This was all within four days. No idea how we did that much stuff, but I slept for 13 straight hours the day after she left, so maybe I’m not as young as I once was.

I started watching the new version of The Twilight Zone with the assumption that I’d dislike it since the original is so great, however I’ve only seen one episode so far (the blue scorpion one) and I think I really like it. Obviously the classic series is untouchable, but this one is done really well.
I learned about the existence of Book Off in midtown, it’s a store “for the people who don’t want to waste.” They buy your old CDs, DVDs, books, action figures, electronics. It’s amazing.
Season three of Riverdale is over! This is the only show that I watch every week, so it was a big deal for me. And honestly, it was a fun season, despite everyone on earth’s opinions of it. Favourite tweet from the finale?

Strawberries are about to be in season, so I got a huge carton of them from a farmer’s market and made these strawberry oatmeal bars. Pretty good! They also work well crumbled up in greek yogurt.
Another good snack idea? These baked sweet potato fries.
I have made this chicken marsala so many times that I’m taking a break from them. But for the first few times I made it, it was so, so satisfying.
All right, look. I fully expected to love Wine Country on Netflix, but maaaaaan. It is not good. It isn’t funny or sweet or anything. I think I also hate it when Tina Fey tries to be a character actor, it’s always just the worst. Do not watch.
Here’s your semi-annual reminder that Bath & Body Works is having their huge twice-a-year sale starting on June 1st, I think. It’s never advertised in advance, but I’m almost positive that it’s the first week of June. Apologies that this sounds like an ad, I just really like their foaming hand soaps and I’m cheap as hell.
Made the roasted cauliflower, feta, orzo salad from Chrissy Teigen’s cookbook and yes it was really, really good. The only issue is that the portion size is way too big. We had leftovers for days and got pretty sick of eating it, so if you’re doing this for two people, definitely size it down. Also, I had no idea there were different types of feta. French feta is creamier than traditional Greek and maaaan is it good.
Loving this kale salad lemon dressing.
This shall be my June mantra.
And this is just great.
What am I looking forward to next month? I’m planning on seeing Mindy’s new movie Late Night, watching some more of the new Twilight Zone episodes, polishing off my spring list, preparing my summer list, thinking about if I’ll ignore or celebrate National Best Friend Day on June 8th, figuring out a Father’s Day gift for the 16th, I do want to see Toy Story 4 but it feels weird to not see it with a niece/nephew, and I’ll definitely take photos of the new apartment and my favourite items that I bought for the apartment post I promised last month.
If you’ve enjoyed this post, here’s a years worth of other ones like it: April 2019, March 2019, February 2019, January 2019, December 2018, November 2018, October 2018, September 2018, August 2018, July 2018, June 2018 & May 2018.

🌟 I speak of Monday... A blessed start to you on this 2nd day of the week. Monday originates from the Norse God of the Moon Mani. If you ask for a psychic answer to your questions I will channel the god appropriate to the day. The exception is Thor who I can seldomly reach. Recumbent: The Art of Lying
I am delighted to share that a very recent work of mine has been curated into Equity Gallery’s “Recumbent: The Art of Lying” exhibition in New York, on view September 8th— October 2nd, 2021.
There is an Outdoors Opening Reception: Thursday, September 9th, 6 — 8 PM at 245 Broome St., NYC*
New York Artists Equity Association is pleased to present their latest juried group exhibition, “Recumbent: The Art of Lying.” The show, juried by the founder of Two Coats of Paint, Sharon Butler, artist Judy Glantzman, and figurative artist and art writer Daniel Maidman. Over 20 artworks focus on the reclining body, one of the most popular and ubiquitous figurative positions in art history. This visual motif is firmly embedded within both Western and Eastern traditions, conjuring up a wealth of associations, which can vary greatly in meaning depending on time, place, and context.
Each of the artworks selected for this exhibition successfully re-invents and re-evaluates the trope of the reclining figure. The featured artworks explore a range of themes, including pleasure and sensuality, such as Tiantian Ma’s “Jackie With My Painting.” Others display unflinching, subversive examinations of culturally ingrained iconography originating from religion, mythology, and antiquity such as Manju Shandler’s “Medusa Column.” Also on exhibit are contemporary recontextualizations and reinventions of the classic pose, as seen in Rachael Warner’s “The Hostess,” and much more. Brought together by the unifying theme of the body in repose, the artworks in “Recumbent: The Art of Lying” create a comprehensive survey to how a single gesture is able to encompass and convey a complex and nuanced collection of cultural ideas and attitudes.
Exhibiting Artists: Cecilia André, Alaiyo Bradshaw, Petey Brown, Julia Campisi, Charis J. Carmichael Braun, Jenny Carpenter, Jeanne Ciravolo, Srishti Dass, Carol Diamond, Camilla Fallon, Patrice Lorenz, Tiantian Ma, Juliet Martin, Nina Meledandri, Alison Mustokoff, David Reisman, Cynthia Reynolds, Manju Shandler, Sylvia Vander Sluis, Rachael Warner, Brenda Zlamany
Juried by: Sharon Butler, Judy Glantzman, Daniel Maidman
*In the interest of safeguarding our community members, Equity Gallery manages access to its space and invites visitors to follow CDC and NY State Guidelines. To that end Equity Gallery is hosting an opening reception in their courtyard space; RSVP via Eventbrite to attend!
