does near every single post-canon DE fic out there need to be tagged ‘Sober Harry Du Bois’? i’m getting so tired of it.

do i expect every single piece of fan content to have to fully delve into the often-depressing always-complex topic of addiction? not really. sometimes you just want to write/read a silly fluffy romance one-shot, whatever. i get it. but i think my issue is specifically with the fact that for nearly every sillyfluffy au out there, there almost must be a ‘sober harry du bois’ tag. and it does feel very slapped-on more often than not.

i think to me it is an unconscious statement that nothing *good* can ever happen to harry du bois until he is completely and permanently sober. before solving the next big case, he has to be sober. before quitting the force, he has to be sober. before falling in love with kim, he has to be sober. before accomplishing anything, starting any sort of recovery, making any life improvement, he must first be sober.

sobriety as a goal, as a journey, and honestly as a concept in of itself is not as cut and dry as so many people think it is. and i think it would serve a lot of people well if they did some introspection on the implications of how nearly every single post-canon fic that isn’t dealing directly with harry’s addiction have him as completely sober instead.

if the plot of the fic isn’t going to touch directly on harry’s substance use (and again, i’m not demanding that every single fic should), why does that mean that sober!harry must be the default?

i think i am just tired of reading a casefic, a smutty one-shot, a fantasy au, whatever, where it almost seems that before getting on with the plot, the author feels obligated to first assure us that the harry we’re reading about is a Sober Harry. it’s established with a couple lines in the exposition, probably about his improved appearance, a tag up top, and then never brought up again; a checkmarked box. like the societal image of An Addict has completely prevented people from being able to imagine a person just, continuing to live life, while still struggling with addiction.

life happens, with all of its backslides and achievements, mundanity and changes, to people with drug addictions just as much as people who don’t. is a post-canon harry who isn’t sober not worth writing about?

i think so. i think the game we all played thinks so too. in fact i think that sentiment is woven into the game’s very core. i just wish i saw that reflected in our fan content more.

Eventually I'll write my thoughts about stuff from the now long confirmed movie spoilers and manga events. Most of it would probably be summed up with ranting about writing (more because of the manga, but also a little because of The movie Thing), and a little bit of pros and cons of it all as far as my opinion.

But at the end of it all, it'll really only change fandom as much as you allow it. Some people are personally unhappy, and that's fine. Many probably won't let it affect their fanworks, no different from any other work with various tweaks or even aus. If people do start harassing for stupid reasons, get some block buttons ready. If the new information encourages new story ideas, that's great!

I personally like juggling possibilities, I just don't like Gosho's use of ideas nowadays, so. -sighs and shrugs- Same old same old, I guess. Even if this time caused a lot bigger drama than usual because of valid concerns.

Speaking of weird/contradictory lore JRO has written. How in the FUCK was Brainstorm simultaneously a scientist working at the New Institute (created by Zeta) but also an MTO made far enough into the war that apparently he doesn't even understand the concept of money? Like what the fuck dude.

Apparently the answer is (implied by canon and clarified by Word of God) that the New Institute continued under Prowl and he kept it hidden from Optimus, which is how Brainstorm as an MTO could've worked there but like. Fuck that honestly, "Prowl did it" is such a boring cop-out for anything morally gray/evil the Autobots do, and there's literally no way that Optimus would sanction the New Institute continuing to exist after he came into power. At the end of Autocracy he literally was shown a secret weapons stockpile Zeta made and he was like "uh no, fuck that, destroy it, we are NOT using the same methods Zeta did" so how can you expect me to believe he would allow the NEW INSTITUTE of all things to continue or not take precautions to make sure such things don't happen again.

#this is specifically about Travis and someone saying he can 'get away with all the murders he committed' #in the ending where he Laura and Ryan find and kill Silas and break the curse #that would mean that canonically Travis has committed NO murders. because he only ever crosses that line when Laura shoots him in chapter 7 #and you cannot break the curse by doing so because Laura and Travis have to work together in order to go after Silas #'going to do everything in his power not to get caught'- tell me you didn't absorb anything other than surface level detail from the game #without telling me. because i can very much tell you didn't get much of anything out of the experience #that man literally gives Laura the power to kill him before going after Silas. he is ready to atone then and there to her #he is repeatedly saying and showing that he hates the cover ups and lying and misery the curse and helping his family is causing #you can not like a character but for fuck's sake - making shit up to make you feel more self righteous about your hate is pathetic looking #and most of the information about Travis is hard fact - it is peppered throughout the game through his dialogue and notes/clues/evidence #vs. Silas who there is almost NOTHING set in stone about. you only know that he's the source of the curse and Eliza kept him caged #even Travis in the end can say he has doubts about whether he was actually Eliza's 'son' or if she didn't just take him and cage him #anyways...i know i'm biased but Travis is the most multi-faceted character in the game and he's the best <3
