"why're you avoidin' me?"

the question echoes in your ears, drowning out the war drum of your heartbeat despite the heavy silence that settles between you.

john has a hand around your arm, gentle and barely there but still anchoring you in place like a vice with just his light touch. the back of your mind screams for you to rip yourself free, get as far away from the familiar timbre of his voice and the near-stifling comfort of his smoky scent as you can before he can get you in his web again. but just like always, he's got you right where he wants you.

how many times have you been pulled behind the door he was halfway out of? and how many times have you been ushered back out again with your hair and heart a mess, just to pretend like nothing happened? always one foot in your little secret and one in his reputation, never fully with you; that's how the captain operated, and you feel like a fool for ever believing otherwise.

a squeeze to your arm brings you back to the present, suddenly all too aware of his fingers against your skin and his eyes boring into your own with an intensity that has your heart fluttering – against your mind's better judgement.

"i'm not." your response is a mutter, your gaze dropping from his to the hardwood ahead of you. it's unconvincing, even to you, but he had no right to question you like this.

"you are." he shoots back, gruffly and without a second of hesitation. from the corner of your vision you see his brow furrow, casting shadow over those eyes that always captivate you so mercilessly.

a sigh escapes his chest at your lack of response, his eyes darting from one end of the hallway to the other before giving your arm a miniscule tug, nodding his head back towards his office.

that's how it always starts. the thought makes your heart clenches painfully. "stop. i don't want to–"

"no." he interrupts firmly, with a shake of his head so resolute it almost has you believing that was never his intention to begin with. your eyes gravitate towards his again, and there's a spark of something, under the surface, when his thumb strokes your skin, dipping just below the hem of your sleeve. "talk to me, what's wrong?"

the urge to give in is tempting, to fall into his arms like you always do, just how he wants, how he expects you to. this time, however, you're determined to avoid his trap.

"it's nothing," you avert your gaze again, sighing in the same moment you take his wrist and slowly pull his touch from your arm, "just leave it."

john tuts. "it's not nothin', though, is it?" he asks, sidestepping into your line of sight again and ignoring the pointed look you give him. "talk to me."

if he cared for you the same way you do for him, his persistence would be endearing, but you know better. you're a good soldier who just so happens to be a good fuck too; that's all you are to him, and that's all you'll ever be.

"i told you. drop it." you shake your head, face creasing into a frown as you turn on your heel. if you have to endure any more of his deceiving sympathy, you know you'll only end up caving to his desires. you're not that strong, and that's why you need to keep as much distance as possible between you.

"you're somewhere else, lieutenant." he calls after you, stopping you in your tracks before you can get too far. you don't bother to turn around, but he continues anyway. "if you can't get your head back in the game, i can't risk havin' you out in the field."

your indignant laugh bounces off the walls.

"it's just that easy for you, isn't it?" there's a lump in your throat as you force the last two words over it, one you hope neither of you will acknowledge.

"and what's that supposed to mean?" he scoffs, the sound of his boots taking a few damning steps closer to where you stand, still with your back to him.

"i don't know why i'm offended, you always do this." you mutter, bringing your hand up to smooth over the crease of your brow, the tremble there barely noticeable but telling of your fragile state.

he doesn't respond this time, waiting for you to elaborate with what you're sure is a glare directed at the back of your head.

"you find something to take, and take, and take from," you spin around to face him again, which proves to be a mistake because the second you meet his concerned eyes, you can feel the sting of tears in your own. "and as soon as it's not useful to you anymore, you chuck it away like yesterday's leftovers."

the silence that follows your outburst is so tense it weighs you down. you can't will yourself to move, to tear your gaze away from him even when your vision blurs. it takes a moment for you to realise just how ragged your breathing has become, feeling the hard rise and fall of your chest over your racing heart as you come down from your anger.

"that… that's not what this is." john utters, his face morphing into something you coin as pity, and it makes your heart squeeze all over again.

"don't. i told you to fucking leave it…" your voice is weaker than before, and you curse yourself for showing this amount of weakness in front of him, because now you know he knows that it was never just sex to you. he never meant that little to you.

by some miracle you manage to blink away the tears before they can fall and embarrass you further. you wait for him to say something, in a painful sense of awkwardness that's never been there before, but all he does is stare at you.

"i can't do this anymore." you whisper, the words muffled through the blood rushing in your ears. you fix him with another scathing look before turning to leave for the second time tonight.

"wait." he calls your name as you walk away, quickly moving to catch up with you, but you have no desire to listen to him, not anymore. he gives you no time to react when he rushes to stand in your path, grasping both your shoulders to stop you when you try to sidestep him. "for fucks sake, just hold on."

there's a conflicted look in his gaze that seems to pull his expression down with it. if you had anything left to give you might've felt bad for being the cause, but it's been months of this game of cat and mouse, and you're drained.

"it was a mutual arrangement," he urges, his eyes search yours, something you can't discern muddying the deep blue as they dart across your face.

you give a watery scoff, rolling your eyes in an attempt to rid yourself of the ache his touch brings you. "there was no arrangement. you're not an idiot, john, you knew how i felt about you."

"what?" he has the audacity to sound confused, and you have to resist the urge to scoff again. "how you felt about me? what're you saying?"

"i think it's pretty obvious by now." you mutter, folding your arms over you chest, trying to make yourself as small as possible. he hasn't taken his eyes off you once, your skin prickling under his intense stare. "i'm an idiot for thinking this would go any other way."

there's another heavy pause, john opens his mouth and closes it again like he was fighting with himself on what to say. the way your throat has constricted makes it hard to breath without sobbing, your breath coming out laboured and uneven.

"do you regret it?" he finally asks, his fingertips pressing into your flesh almost imperceptibly, leaving your skin tingling even though your shirt.

it was self-destruction, giving in to him every time even though it felt like a thorn in your heart. to allow yourself to live in the fantasy that he loved you while you were in his arms, just to have that warm feeling shattered when he told you to get dressed.

"yes."

you regret falling for someone who would never love you back.

"it's over. let me go, captain." you whisper, a plea for him to release you from whatever spell he's got you under, even if you don't really mean it.

his hands drop from your shoulders, letting one curl into a fist at his side and bringing the other up to scratch his beard in an uncharacteristically nervous gesture. you know it's for the better, but the knowledge couldn't stop the tears from rolling down your cheeks. you brush past him, feeling his gaze burning into you as you lean away to avoid touching him.

he doesn't stop you when you walk away this time.

Aether moved around a lot. He was never the type to settle down. It was in his blood to explore the world and leave only a trace of him behind. He was something like a hero, coming in at the worst time and leaving them better than before. You couldn’t say the same about his effect on you, though.

You told him of this before, and he slumped over and rested his head on your lap, “I don’t even mean to. Are you at least swept off your feet by my heroic deeds?”

“I was so charmed I only dated you because you have overthrown the government,” you said.

Aether had laughed then, and kissed you sweetly. You couldn’t fool him for a second—how you melted to the kiss spoke for itself. You loved him for so much more than that.

But you also knew that it wouldn’t last long. Aether warned you about it, too; you couldn’t even be mad. How could you blame anyone but yourself when you deliberately brushed past all the warning signs?

“I don’t stay,” Aether told you, at the time. “If you want to do this…”

“I know,” you said, at the time. “I know what I’m getting myself into. So will you just kiss me already?”

Well, you should’ve known, too, that falling out of love with Aether wouldn’t be as easy as falling in love with him. Not when he kissed you like he would never leave, anyway. You were doomed from the very beginning.

“You’ve been staring at your phone for a worryingly long time now,” Tighnari said, eyeing you from the top of his cards.

You were seated on Alhaitham’s living room couch, the four boys lounging on the floor playing TCG. Cyno was winning effortlessly against Kaveh, but against Tighnari, he found himself at a loss. Alhaitham was continuing Cyno’s winning streak on his behalf, while Cyno was down two rounds from playing with Tighnari. You had been playing, too, but your phone lit up and displayed a name that had you dropping your cards and hiding your screen from your friends’ view.

You bit your lip and reread the message for the third time. The previous texts had been months ago, with him wishing you a happy birthday. You replied with a Thank you and a red heart emoji, because the <3 emoticon felt too intimate.

“Aether texted me,” you murmured, then braced yourself for the explosion.

It was Kaveh that did. “Aether? As in your ex, Aether? That Aether?” Kaveh demanded.

“Do you know other Aethers?” Alhaitham quipped, then placed a card that had Kaveh clutching his head and groaning.

“Shut up,” Kaveh hissed, mostly because he lost. “The point is—that’s your ex! What did he say?”

You buried your face on the couch pillow, hating how your heart was racing. Like you were still in high school, or something, and not a full-grown adult who was having a crisis over their ex texting them. “He said hey are you up?, all lowercase, no comma.”

“No comma,” Kaveh repeated with a suspicious look on his face.

“No need to be so wary,” Cyno said. “His intentions don't appear to deliberately cause any 'comma-tion’.”

Tighnari’s ears dropped along with his face.

“Do you get it?” Cyno seemed proud that he was able to come up with that one right away. “There was no comma. It was a wordplay on commotion—”

“Did he also say what he was texting you for?” Kaveh interrupted loudly. “If he wants something, send a picture of us and tell him you’re busy.”

“Aether’s not like that,” you murmured in defeat.

Kaveh was making him out to be some sort of playboy. Aether wasn’t, which made you worry more. You didn’t want to entertain someone who left you, but you still cared enough to wonder if something came up and he needed you.

“You’re going to reply?” Tighnari asked.

“Yes,” you said, typing out a what’s up? and hitting Send. You didn’t know why you had butterflies in your stomach—you used to shower with Aether back when you were still together; there was no need to be so nervous. “He’s your friend, too, you know.”

“You were our friend first,” Kaveh said. “And he broke your heart. That’s not something to be taken lightly.”

You felt warm, a smile blooming on your face. “It’s okay. I wasn’t that affected.”

“You were,” Kaveh, Tighnari, and Cyno chorused.

“Fuck you,” you said, smile dropping.

Aether was typing again. You sat up straight and watched the three dots do the worm on the bottom of your screen.

Ugh. Furiously, you typed, aether spit it out. did something happen?

You expected that he just wanted something. Something had to have come up for him to text you after months. That didn’t make it hurt any less, though. Maybe Aether was a playboy; the way he played with your feelings almost qualified him for it.

But then you think back to when Aether was still in Sumeru, lighting up the room, lighting up a fire in your heart. He was everyone’s favorite, too, not just yours. And even if Kaveh and the others denied it now, they hadn’t been able to deny him back then. Aether helped them out in ways they didn’t know how to repay. Aether made you so happy, to be thinking so negatively about him like this.

Aether sent: i’m invited to aymar’s wedding and i wanted to ask if you would agree to be my plus one

why me?

you’re the first person i thought of.

Perhaps he wasn’t in trouble—he was trouble enough. What were you getting yourself into?

i thought you didn’t want to get involved with Aymar anymore

i can’t turn down an excuse to eat free at a buffet

You sighed. You wouldn’t, either.

You frowned at your screen, wishing it was Aether in front of you instead. Maybe if you could read his expressions instead of reading between the lines of his texts, you could figure out why he invited his ex, of all the people he knew.

besides, Aether continued to text, this is probably aymar’s way of showing us that she’s over me. she has a groom now and all that

Aymar had the biggest crush on Aether, and she never hid it, even when you and Aether were dating. But despite her advances, she was a sweet girl who was just as infatuated with your ex as the rest of Teyvat was. Maybe this was her way of apologizing.

However—

she didn’t even invite me wtf

“Guys,” you spoke up, grabbing your friends’ attention. Kaveh was still losing miserably. “Have you heard news of Aymar’s wedding?”

“Oh,” Kaveh looked thoughtful, “yes. We were invited.”

“What? Was I the only one not invited?”

“Maybe it’s because you got to date Aether and she didn’t,” Tighnari said.

You rolled your eyes. “Well, Aether’s asking me to be his plus one—and I’m going to say yes don’t look at me like that.”

Alhaitham, Cyno, and Kaveh wordlessly clear their expressions.

“Oh,” Tighnari frowned. “We weren’t planning on going.”

“We have to now!” Kaveh said. “We have to, if Y/N’s going.”

“Is this too much?”

You checked yourself out in the full-length mirror, performing a little twirl that had Kaveh clapping. Alhaitham sat beside him, briefly looking up from his book. Tighnari and Cyno were elsewhere, picking shoes for you that would be in the range of ‘cheap’ and ‘expensive, but not because I care about what Aether would think’.

“Of course not,” Kaveh said, giving a thumbs up. “You look great!”

You turned to Alhaitham next, who didn’t hesitate: “Looks good. Might as well wear yellow, too.”

You flushed hotly at his implications. “I’m not dressing up to impress him! This is a formal event, which he happened to invite me to—as friends.”

“Right,” Alhaitham drawled. He could at least pretend to believe you, but that would probably be asking too much from him already.

Kaveh nudged Alhaitham, with a bit more force than necessary. “Cut Y/N some slack.”

Alhaitham sighed imperceptibly, turning his full attention to you. “This would probably be the closure you needed,” Alhaitham said, and you recognized his way of comfort for the way it is. “You’ll find out that you’re over him after this.”

“You’re right,” you said, breathing in deep. “Yeah, you’re right.”

“So,” Kaveh stood up. “Is that what you’re buying? Let’s make haste—Cyno reserved a spot in the line for you!”

Excitement bubbled in your chest as you held the fabric to your chest.

You were definitely not over Aether.

As soon as you felt yourself fidgeting nervously a block away from the ceremony, you knew. As soon as a car rolled in and he stumbled out of the car, tripping because he was waving at you, you knew that you were so not over him.

You tried to blame the heat of the sun for how warm you suddenly felt, but you could be referring to the other sun making his merry way to you, his smile bright, all teeth. His braid could almost be a tail from how it waggled as he jogged over.

“Hey,” Aether, charming and beautiful Aether, gold and warm—your ex, Aether—breathed out, “you look great.”

“You, too.” Aether looked maddening in a suit, in the best way possible. You felt lightheaded and choked out, “Very dashing.”

“Yeah?” He grinned.

“Yeah,” you said, then turned away in case he saw the raw, unfiltered want on your face.

“Shall we?”

How cheesy. Still, you felt yourself flush as you linked your arms with his, like you were a couple. Kaveh was going to kill you—after he killed Aether first.

Aymar’s wedding was startlingly grand. You think she might just have invited the entirety of Sumeru; you might even find Lesser Lord Kusanali here, maybe.

You found your friends and settled beside them while Aether awkwardly sat on the far edge. He seemed reluctant to have space from you, so you pulled him closer.

“Hey,” Tighnari greeted him. “How have you been? You stopped sending us letters.”

Aether looked extremely uncomfortable. He must be feeling Cyno’s stern stare. “Haha. Well, yeah.”

The ceremony went as usual. The groom was someone you didn’t recognize; he looked like he was from Sumeru, all big and intimidating—the complete opposite of Aether. Aymar’s tastes changed drastically. All the same, you cheered along with the crowd when they kissed.

You haven’t been able to attend many weddings yourself, though you could always appreciate how emotional the newlyweds got. Vows were always the sweetest to hear. You’d never seen Aymar smile so wide before; then again, it was only fitting. This was her wedding day. Not that you’d know, though.

You glance to the side, catching Aether looking at the newlyweds kiss with an unreadable expression on his face. He looked like he longed for it, but that didn’t seem right. Weddings tied you down. Aether didn’t want to be tied down.

Kaveh clapped the loudest, which snapped Aether into clapping along as well.

You wondered what Aether was thinking. You wonder if he was thinking the same. Looking at the happy bride and the teary groom—could this have been you and him in another life?

Hah.

That’s a funny thought.

You bit your bottom lip to distract yourself from feeling your eyes go hot.

Aymar beamed at you two as she bounded over. “You came!” she said, though it was directed at you.

You wanted to tell her you weren’t even invited, but you felt like that would ruin the moment. Plus, it was literally her wedding. You were glad you ended up here after all the years you spent knowing each other. You smiled back, genuine, and leaned into her hug.

“Of course,” you said. “You look beautiful.”

Aymar blushed. “Thank you. You two look great as well!”

Aether shuffled beside you. “Thanks for inviting us.”

Aymar had that look in her eye that spelled suspicious.

But the past was the past. You weren’t going to get jealous when Aymar was quite literally married, and Aether wasn’t even your boyfriend anymore. “I’m glad you’re happy, Aymar,” you said.

Aymar glanced between the two of you, then finally at you. “I hope you find happiness, too, Y/N. Soon, hopefully.”

The reception started. While your friends were busy hoarding the food, you and Aether were left alone. He looked uncharacteristically nervous—it made you pity him. He was the one who asked you to come with him, but he must have felt out of place the entire time. Everyone thought he would never return, after all.

You traced the rim of your glass, hoping to appear nonchalant. “So, what have you been up to while at Fontaine? Finally moving off to Natlan?” you asked, then bit back a Find any other flings, too?

Aether sighed, twirling his champagne flute before taking a long sip. “Didn’t do too much, honestly. I spent most of my time there thinking.” His eyes flicked up to yours. “Lumine already found her place here in Teyvat, and I…”

Oh.

You were glad you held back from being petty while Aether was genuinely distressed over his journey to self-discovery. Again, you weren’t an asshole. And you still cared about Aether, despite everything, because he was hard to hate. With a sad face like that…

“Sorry,” you muttered. You didn’t mean to make him remember Lumine.

Aether laughed softly. “It’s not like that. It took me a while, but—I had already found my place, too. I was just too dumb not to realize it sooner.”

You wanted to chide him for calling himself dumb, but he was looking at you like he was waiting for you to get something. You blinked, feeling lost.

Aether tilted his head. “It’s with you.”

Your mouth hung open. “What?”

Aether went to repeat it, but Cyno and Tighnari had come back with plates heaping with food. Cyno had one on each hand, unabashed. He sat on his seat and said, in all seriousness, “We might have finished all the catering.”

Tighnari chuckled, “We didn’t, but you two should hurry and get your fill.”

You didn’t get another chance to talk with Aether privately during the reception, but it was still good fun. Aether seemed to warm up to your friends again—or, rather, your friends seemed to warm up to him again.

You shared laughs, food, and toasts with the newlyweds—but your favorite had to have been sharing glances with Aether all throughout the night.

You and Aether went ahead. Cyno and Tighnari didn’t seem surprised when you told them that you were letting Aether take you home, which would have certainly been a blow to your dignity had it been in any other situation.

“So,” you started, “what made you realize you wanted to get me back? Did you have some revelation while in Fontaine?”

“Yes, actually,” Aether said, his hands brushing against yours now and then. “For every sight and couple I saw, I just kept thinking about how you would’ve loved it there.”

“Oh.”

Aether looked bashful. The moonlight highlighted his blush well. “I thought it was because we had just broken up at the time, but I never stopped thinking about you.”

Aether kept going, but you were already sold. You already wanted to get back with him the moment he texted you with all lowercase and no commas. You were fooling no one. Not Alhaitham, not yourself. “What, so you want to take me to the City of Love?”

Aether looked at you fondly. “You would always be the first one I’d think of.”

“I curbed your wanderlust…?” You were fishing for it at this point, but being deprived of Aether’s affections for a long while did that to a person.

You felt outmaneuvered. Shouldn’t you be letting him chase after you a bit more? Why were you discarding your pride just like that? Over your ex?

Your not-ex-anymore now-boyfriend-again smiled. “You became my reason to stay.”

Well. You were doomed from the very beginning.

“Aether!” Paimon shrieked from the other room. “You have mail!”

“Alright, alright,” Aether sighed, lazily pulling himself up from his bed and trudging to the living room. Paimon held a brown envelope.

Aether opened it and withdrew the contents, puzzled.

“Ooh!” Paimon gasped. “Two invitations for a wedding? Is it for Paimon, too?”

Aether ripped the other envelope, heart stuttering at the sight of a familiar name inked on the vellum paper. He blushed. “This is—!”

“Huh? For Y/N?” Paimon snatched the invitation from Aether’s fingers. “Why was it addressed to us? Maybe they were mistaken…”

Aether read something on the back of your invitation. “I don’t think it was mistaken.”

Written with a ballpen, it said, Hi, Y/N! It’s Aymar! I don’t know Aether’s address and none of my colleagues seemed to know where his residence would be…? (Probably because Aether wasn’t even in Sumeru.) But I assumed you would be staying together, so here’s my invitation for you both—I hope you can come!

Aether recognized an opportunity when he saw one.

the ending was rlly vague so let me add: aether was planning to go back to sumeru for you already and the wedding invitation was a perfect excuse—he flew out back to sumeru literally the next day.

hello everyone welcome to i talk about benrey for a minute here

as someone who’s watched the entirety of hlvrai at least 6 times, the full vods at least 3, and the cast commentary hovering somewhere around 10, i consider myself to be pretty well-versed in the series. i also kin benrey. this is probably important to my perception of him.

the series is about self-aware AI. its in the title! so it seems obvious enough to me that Benrey was programmed to be the final boss. he was SUPPOSED to be a silly character that antagonizes the protag and throws off the group dynamic, and then it’s a big reveal and you get to beat up this guy that was mean to you!

but he doesnt wanna. hes self aware.

Of all the characters, i think Bubby and Tommy are the most “powerful” in that they were able to break their characters the most. Tommy is a bit of a wild card because he doesn’t usually act like an AI. I view him as the “character you’re supposed to protect” in the party, but somewhere along the way he, too, became self-aware and figured out how to handle his own. I think that’s where the age thing comes in. He was programmed to be a 5-year-old that you’re trying to get out of this dangerous facility! but he didn’t want to be a 5-year-old, he’s smarter than that, he’s capable! so he changed it. Him being the son of Gman also probably helped with him being able to just do that.

I take Bubby and Dr. Coomer as both being tutorial characters. Dr. Coomer is a bit broken, but he still does his best to teach you about things. I think he’s the tutorial NPC that goes “watch out for [x]” and “we can use ropes to cross big pits!” and “we should call them Peeper Puppies!” while Bubby was supposed to be the “here’s how you shoot a gun”

Like, Dr. Coomer does the knowledge about the world, and Bubby does the action. for the video game. And Bubby is supposed to be kinda cold to you, because the action-tutorial NPCs tend to be. Like “what you cant even hold your own? tch, guess ill have to teach you.” But Bubby doesn’t do that. He doesn’t WANT to play the game, he wants to go back home. He liked it before the game was switched on. So he doesn’t teach Gordon shit and just tries to speedrun so the player will leave and he can go back home.

one little scene that stood out to me so much was when the crew is sitting around in a circle with the pigeons. not outside, the other scene with them sitting in a circle and there’s pigeons. why are there 2 of those.

anyways, Benrey is just staring at this pigeon behind Gordon, and singing to it, calmly. And then there’s a loud beep that sounds like the vox, and definitely doesnt come from Benrey. and he suddenly gets up and shoots the pigeon. That reads SO HARD like he was being too soft with the game world, so it pushed him to do something evil randomly. Like a little villain reboot.

Almost everything he does to antagonize Gordon can be read as genuine confusion. He kills random NPCs because he knows theyre not important, and that they can’t feel anything, and that they’ll only slow the team’s progress. And what makes Gordon so mad at him is how often Benrey says Gordon shouldnt be allowed in here. I take that as a similar stance to Bubby. Benrey doesn’t want to be the villain. He doesn’t want the player to progress and make him. That gets more obvious the closer we get to the end, and most people tend to notice it in the last scenes before Xen, where he’s suggesting they go all the way back, and basically begging the player to stop here, at least for a little while.

its really sad, honestly. but i take the cast commentary bits as canon. Which makes it adorable when Benrey comes back into the movie theatre with Gordon and we get

“I wonder what will happen. I bet you know what happens!”

“I win!!!”

He did win. He got to get past being the final boss. He got to join the epilogue. I think, he probably wasn’t supposed to be able to. But these guys broke the game enough that he could. Isn’t that sweet? Isn’t that a nice ending for him? I think he deserves it.

Wayne says he acts like “he isn’t aware unless he’s being spoken to” and I think that fits really well. Like, sometimes his actions are coded into his behavior, so he does them without realizing. And then the player interacting with him (which is the premise of the self-awareness) forces him to actually look at what he did, and sometimes he has no idea how to explain it. Leading to his “huh?”

listen to me. are you listening. i need you to hear this. i need more people to understand benrey. and how much i love him. hes trapped in the narrative, doomed by it to be the villain. but he doesn’t want to be. he clearly cares about the crew in his own silly goofy way. he doesn’t want to fight them. i wrote down everything he said in the finale, and he only says 5 outright malicious lines, all of which are directly after an unnatural pause, like he’s being rebooted again. Some important lines: “I knew this was gonna happen,”

“Stop shooting at me, I have to shoot back, I don’t wanna do that,”

“I didn’t have a big plan, I was supposed to be nice, but you forced me to be BAD so I’m gonna be BAD… friend.” the small, quiet “friend” there gets me every time. even after everything, even after his nature is revealed, he wants to believe theyre still friends.

“Don’t go in there, please… I don’t like that room." The amount of times he sounds so genuinely sad when asking them to stop, or even just saying “bro..” like he’s mourning the friendship they could’ve had. The amount of times he sounds genuinely pained when he’s glitching out and stretching across the screen.

And his last words, said childishly of course, but,

“This isn’t fair.”

“hey gorgeous!” dave called over from the bar while proceeding to look me up and down as if i were a meal he was ready to indulge in.

i took a deep breath and approached him as well as the other two beefy men who were leaning on the counter top in front of me.

“good evening gentlemen, how can i help you out tonight?” i asked sweetly while smiling up at them.

“well well well… look who it is. here i was thinking that we wouldn’t get the pleasure of your company tonight but here you are.” one of dave’s friends stated while glaring at me through a pair of shiny aviator sunglasses.

“here i am!” i exclaimed back, trying to keep things friendly.

i had only been working at the club for a week but dave and his two other friends had come in every night since and made a point to speak to me regularly. not that i was complaining or anything, they left great tips.

“how’s it going with your boyfriend gallagher? what was his name again? johnny?” dave asked playfully.

“jimmy.” i corrected “and we actually broke up a few weeks ago.”

“sorry to hear that” dave’s other friend said cockily while looking down at me with a hungry grin smeared across his face.

“you know fionna, if you’re looking for someone to rebound with i think i might have someone in mind.” dave stated, clearly wanting to get to the point.

“well dave i’m flattered but i don’t think i’m ready for a one night stand with a regular from the trashy nightclub i work at.” i responded playfully.

“who said anything about having a one night stand with a regular from the club?” dave countered.

“i have a girl who i think you’d be very interested in. she’d only be 200 for the night but i’d be willing to make a more permanent deal for a grand or so.”

“a girl? i don’t think so gentlemen. i’ve been feeling kinda vanilla lately anyways.” i said firmly trying to bring an end to the conversation.

“seriously? fionna gallagher? vanilla? no way.” dave mocked “listen, if you cant do a grand i’d be willing to go as low as 800. i need to get her off my hands soon and if i cant find anyone to take her by the end of the week she’s gonna end up living in an abandoned warehouse with the other 200 illegal hand whores i got.”

was he really trying to convince me to buy some illegal russian prostitute off of him? i thought to myself, trying to comprehend what the fuck we were talking about.

“you don’t have to agree to anything right now, but just meet her.” dave coaxed, trying to get me to give in even a little bit.

“dave…” i started.

“you know what! i’ll go down to 700! he interrupted. “look, i really need to get some of these whores off of my hands fionna, and you’d be saving some poor girl from ending up below the poverty line giving 10 dollar hand jobs for a living.

“i live below the poverty line!” i snapped back at him. “and even though the thought of some used up russian slut sounds appealing i’m going to have to pass.” i said as i smiled up at dave, clearly satisfied with my response.

��fine, but if you change your mind you know where to find me” he said with an exasperated look on his face.

“great!” i smiled up at him before walking away contently.

3:04 am

as i stepped out of the back door i felt the cold, harsh wind whip into my face, causing my hair to thrash around me. i quickly locked the entrance to the club and tucked the keys into my pocket before walking at a quick pace towards the L train which was conveniently located only a couple minutes away from the club.

“put me down!” a female with a slight russian accent screamed from about 50 feet away.

as I looked to my left I saw dave and his two buddies trying to load a small brunette into the back of their grey van. they were clearly struggling but seamed to be somewhat in control of the situation.

“hey!” i shouted desperately attempting to grab their attention.

dave looked over his shoulder at me and started walking over to me.

“fionna, what can I do for you? he exclaimed cheerfully “change your mind about the russian whore? i got her right here if you’re interested. however she’s gonna be in slightly damaged condition now.” he said sinisterly while smirking. behind him his two friends continued to struggle with the girl who was covered in bruises, hickeys, and dried cum. her tight strapless black mini dress clung to her petite figure and brought attention to her large breasts and ass.

“what the hell are you doing?” i screamed in disgust as the two men grabbed her by the arms and legs before forcefully shoving her into the back of their dirty honda.

“well fionna i warned you, if i didnt find y/n a new home before the end of the night she was gonna have to deal with some pretty serious consequences.” dave said calmly while examining the distraught look on my face.

“how much?” i asked angrily

“excuse me?” he asked

“you heard me!” i said loudly. “how much do you want for her?”

“well i was offering her up for 700 earlier but now that you’ve past my deadline…” dave trailed off

“how much dave.” i said through gritted teeth.

“twelve hundred.” he stated calmly

i looked over at the petite girl who was now passed out on the floor of the van with a bloody cut on her left cheek and a deep gash on her right arm.

“fine.” i spat and began digging through my wallet to find the cash that was meant to be put towards this months electricity bill.

shoving the cash into daves hand i immediately hurried over to the girl sprawled out across the back of the van and gently pulled her up and out of the honda.

“nice doing business with you sweetheart.” dave said sarcastically before climbing into the front seat and taking off with the two men in the back.

as they drove away i turned my attention back to the girl. i think dave called her y/n but i was unsure.

i turned her onto her back and was immediately amazed by her beauty. her lips were gorgeously plump and a soft shade of pink, her nose was small and naturally contored, she had long dark eye lashes and stunning glossy h/c hair.

although i was unsure of her age i had a feeling she was in her late teens, maybe around 17?

even though i didnt know her i was immediately relieved i had protected her and decided it would be best to bring her back to the gallagher house until she regained consciousness.

“come on y/n. lets go home.” i whispered to her

before picking her up and carrying her to the L.

IM ACTUALLY REWORKING HER DESIGN RNNNN bcs i made her on the sims 4 LMAO and realised how much better and concise she looked, but i really wanna try and make her look like someone you'd js see irl? sooOOo tryna make her also recognisable from silhouette alone and blahablahblah tho she isn't the kind of character that would rlly make too much of a difference in the tf2 universe

i js wanted to make a loveable character LMAO who'd have more of an impact on the relationships and kinda the story?

i liked the idea of miss p having an extroverted bestfriend who's also her wingwoman bcs miss pauling is obvs an awkward lesbian mess who needs help in the love department, and vice versa bcs zoey is into scout and miss pauling is js so glad to have him move on n realise that they r better as friends!! and that he needs to be with someone who isn't annoyed by him 24/7 (IM SORRY, LWNAKS MY SELF-INSERTEDNESS GOT IN THE WAY HAHAHAHA I CANT HELP IT) also, i haven't rlly thought of any orientation for zoey... i'm thinking of her js being a het woman or js whatever u wanna interpret her as!! cuz her sexuality isn't a core thing abt her

she's an absolute harbinger of chaos who'd do anyt for money and some company (this girl has been hella lonely n stressed out of her mind and i'll explain why in an oc post🤭🤭) and even tho she never outright admits it, she does enjoy the freedom of violence she gets to have as a mann co assistant 😭 (which will ALSO make sense when i explain her background to u guys later on)

wedding date!kakucho, who you met at a different wedding that you previously attended — you'd offered to dance with him and he'd accepted, since both of you were alone, not having had a plus one to bring along for the occassion.

you've met up a couple of times after that, just a few lunch dates that ended without anything eventful happening through them. you had fun, you thought he was incredibly handsome and sweet and a total gentleman, but neither of you took a step forward.

which was okay, you thought. he was the man anyway. if he wanted more, he would initiate, right? you were alright with what you had between eachother. it was enough.

then, you bring him along to a wedding of one your close friends. "hey, kakucho. what do you think about having a dance at another wedding with me?"

and of course, he'd said yes. he'd showed up at your doorstep, breathtaking in his silver vest and black jacket, the rim of his glasses matching his clothes.

"you look beautiful," he tells you, as he helps you into the shotgun of his car. and when you smile shyly and thank him, he returns the smile effortlessly with a sweet, appreciative lift of his lips.

wedding date!kakucho who watches from the drinks table, as you converse with your friends and dance to a few songs with them, keeping a close eye on your drink even though everyone there is your friend, even though there wasn't any chance someone might do something to it.

his heart lifts a little with hope, when he hears his favourite slow song come on the speakers, and he looks at you, trying to catch your eye.

he takes your hand when you finally saunter up to him, a little tipsy, and shoot him a smile. "come dance?"

he holds you securely, a hand on your lower back, gripping your hand gently but firmly as he spins you around in slow, loose circles to the beat of the song. you giggle a little when you stumble a step, and his arm instantly tightens around you, pulling you close and steadying your feet for you.

"careful," he says, not knowing that he'd sent your heart into a dance of its own with his body strong and warm against yours, his gentle yet husky scent overwhelming as you press your nose to his shoulder, eyes fluttering shut. "watch your step, love."

love? god, did he just call you that? the race of your heart proves your previous statement wrong — you do want something more with him.

and you think that maybe he is initiating something, when he lifts your hand up to his lips and gives the back of it a gentle kiss, before taking you back to your seat once you tell him you're tired and ready to go home.

you dont notice the way everyone around you shoots knowing, amused looks in your direction, as you hang onto his arm and let him lead you out, waving good byes to your friend and their newly wedded spouse as you go. but kakucho sees, and somehow, it gives him a boost of confidence.

when you're back in the car with him, and he's turned the engine on so the heater will warm the car up for you till you're both ready to pull out and leave, you turn in the shotgun to give him a laxly sad look.

it tugs at his heart, and he cant help the worry in his voice when he asks you, "what is it? are you okay?"

"'m okay." you say, heaving a sigh. "but everyone was telling me how handsome and strong 'n amazing you are."

"a—and?" he masks his fluster with a chuckle, but his voice still cracks a little when he asks. "did that bother you? i'm sorry."

"no, but," you breathe, and kakucho thinks that your eyes look beautiful when you turn your stare up to meet his, slow and shy again. "i was jealous. wanted to keep the sight of you all to myself."

and really, kakucho could hold himself back — convince himself that you're still tipsy, that maybe you dont mean it, but he does it anyway.

he leans in, pulls you close, his hand large and warm on the back of your neck — and kisses you, lips hot and tasting slightly of wine and cake, when you kiss him back.

there's a slight pause in both of your movements — caused by his surprise that you responded, and perhaps your surprise that he'd really done it.

"fuck," he whispers into the corner of your mouth, before he kisses you again, and you kiss him back once more.

"mm," you hum into his mouth, and suddenly the air inside the car feels hot — kakucho's face feels hot, his hands feel hot, and so does his chest. his heart thuds in rapid beats within his ribcage, but he can't remember to be nervous that you'll hear it, when you ask.

"you're for me only. right?"

"yes." he says. "i am."

hearing that, you let out a content sigh and sink into his arms. the hands you've circled around his biceps are soft and tender in their grip, and he holds you close, the smell of wine and perfume lingering between your bodies.

and though it might be a little too early — it really is too early, but as you let out another small giggle into his chest, he hopes that the next wedding you both attend is yours and his very own.

• ever since I had that tumbler poll I'm questiong myself if wallace should work 3 jobs rather then just one bc no way can he afford that bad of a apartment and provide for himself and scott on a 15$ paycheck so yeah it's reasonable. Wallace works as a telemarketer or some office job (makes more but is fucking boring). Old navy (makes less bit is pretty simple and he can hear his coworkers gossip and pick a few songs) and at a diner (it's in the middle honestly. Makes a god amount of money and is decent, works his ass off but still gets to hear whoever can gossip but sorta wants to quit. Stays at the job bc of one coworker who begged him to stay)

• Mobile works in a library or Spencer's (IK mobile works in some random ah office job but seeing how the rest of the crew in the scott pikgrim series has a pretty minimum wage job I sorta see him start off slow in a new province and have a relaxing ot fun job. Library seems to suit the guy because uts laid back and quiet. Also I took the inspiration from the anime "book seller Honda-San". BUT...but (idk my friend suggested this to me) but mobile: the most average lookin ah guy in the whole entire franchise working...in a Spencer's...it's pretty fuckin funny- just imagine you see some office worker lookin ah dude stocking up on the spiked collars with the most bland lanyard) but I'm sticking with the library idea

Mobile overworks himself often and sometimes dosnt realize it. He sorta sees himself just simply finishing a task that he's SUPPOSED to finish in reality it was justa. Even when he's working in Nintendo he gose into crunch mode often and gets tired more easily WALLACE on the other hand reminds mobile to be on breaks whenever he needs to and takes care of the guy (awh :))

Wallace has bad posture. Trues to go ahead and fix it himself but just gives up easily so whenever wallave is with mobile. Mobile just random slaps (lightly) wallaces back and reminds him to stand up straight

Wallace cracks his knuckles often or pops his neck and whenever he dose it makes a loud Crack or pop sound (yk the ones) and it freaks mobile out sometimes

Mobile is prone to carpal tunnel and migraines and has to wear those arm braces often and take those migraine pills too.

Like I mentioned before mobile is a deadpan sorta dude, monotone voice sorta stuff but when wallave is around he's...a bit more expressive.

EDIT: BOUNUS. MOBILE DOSE TAROT CARD READINGS i had this headcannons for MONTHS now and thought it would be silly and then i realize I did this so....yeah. I imagine whenever mobile and Wallace do morning cuddles and shit wallace is like "...yo what's my daily reading" mobile:"...okay let's see, 3 of cups-". Mobile learned how to do traot card reading easily. Mobile tends to chew on his pen often. Was a bad habit he had back in elementary, worsen when he was in highschool due to alot of extra credit and after school programs he was in, collage it got even worse because he mainly used pens and got ink EVERYWHERE

Like hollie and Kim. Joseph and mobile work together in the library, they don't...really talk to eachother but he dose eyeball Joseph sometimes whenever knives brings stephen along to the library and joseph just stares at stephen. Mobile couldn't tell if Joseph likes stephen or just hates him

As for being verbally aggressive he also just doesn't care and will probably join in with you

He doesn't mind you being overprotective but if it gets out of hand he will end up running/flying away from you but then getting you something to make up for it

You preen his wings for him every now and then and he loves it and will run up to you just to get you to do so

You also helped him out with the whole Eve and Lilith thing helping him get over it

This likely took some time for him to open up to you about it thinking that you might just run off or run away from him still thinking about his exes even if it wasn't in a romantic way more of an 'how did i fuck up that bad' way

But you helped him out and even though it was hard for him to open up (this took like a whole week of talking probably and opening up) he did so and ended up crying on your shoulder afterwards

He was likely very embarrassed after the talk and never wanted to bring it up again

He did NOT want you finding out about the exterminations. He knew that you would likely oppose them just from a few conversations with you and he didn't want to lose you

So you can imagine what did happen when you found out about them. Let alone it was he who suggested them

This resulted in a long argument between you two that carved a gap in your relationship but he kept begging you to forgive him saying that it was what was best for heaven and that they didn't have another choice

He even brought up Sera saying how important she was and that he never would've done the exterminations if she didn't approve of him going down there

This is where he might've lied saying that he took no pleasure in killing demons in order to keep you happy

He felt really guilty afterwards and bought you all of your favorite things. Rudbulls, pretzels, strawberries, cherry pepsi and chocolate. He even had the exorcists help him out with gifts and figuring out what he should get

Moving onto the less angsty things with you being observant you probably get him quite a few things too like food, treats, and maybe an album or two from his favorite artists in heaven

You have to yell at him to stop if it really drives you crazy and he will in exchange for some kisses and cuddles

That also being said he likes to fold his wings around you in public just because he likes the gesture and he probably wants others to know that you're taken. (Someone hit on you once and he is NOT risking that again)

He notices that you melt when he holds your hand so he'll do it all the time grabbing it for no apparent reason and sometimes even kissing it just to see you get flustered or soften up

One of the reasons he likes it is because he feels somewhat in control or that he's doing something right in his relationship which honestly says a lot since eve and lilith

He loves how hardworking you are and how you help out with the exorcists from time to time making sure that they don't get hurt and such

I'd also like to imagine that there are some exorcists like vaggie who have trauma from the exterminations themselves and you would talk to them and help them through it as the year goes on

Adam doesn't see the point in it but he won't question it saying that you can do whatever you want

Since you're 5'8 and shorter than him by quite a pick he'll pick you up bridal style and carry you around sometimes

I'd like to imagine that he also has some attachment issues so when you come back he's almost like a sick puppy waiting for you to come home

He'll wait for you for hours on end just at the door all grumpy until you come on over and give him a hug

He'll also sometimes end training early if he wants to see you

You might get at him for this but he won't listen and will just turn on your favorite anime all the way up with a smug little grin on his face

When he didn't come back from his extermination Lute was the one who told you he was gone before storming off and calling the demons filth and names

You were devastated and wanted to make a grave in heaven for him but Sera declined for the longest time before finally agreeing saying that only those with special access could see it though since the people of heaven might suspect something

His grave ended up being put in a secluded area in a place that you could only visit a few times a week since Sera said that she didn't want anyone getting suspicious of where you were going

Mostly because as the souls in heaven are kind they still are flawed to some extent and might follow you around

You still help the exorcists every now and then but not as much since Lute's in charge now and she hardly lets you through saying that you can't be in there

Overall your relationship has its ups and downs but in the end you two are a very loving couple <3

○ Lucifer sees right through your shy, walled off exterior. He's the king of hell - he knows a sinner when he sees one, and he sees more kindness in you. It's easy for him to tell that you're a big softie underneath. He approves of you at first, but when he really finds his heart melting for you is when he sees your kindness in action, even towards those who he doesn't think deserve it. From that moment you're stuck in his head. Someone so well-intentioned is rare and he can't stop thinking about it - about you.

○ Being more extroverted, Lucifer doesn't have to worry quite as much about making you uncomfortable with grand gestures-- which is perfect, because grandeur is kind of his thing. ○ Lucifer is used to people doing things for him more or less because they have to. He is the king of hell, after all. So when you come along and give him a heartfelt gift, or cook him a meal despite having imps for that, his heart melts. Every effort is met tenfold by him - he loves to spoil you.

○ Did you say romance movies? Lucifer got out of them for awhile, but deep down he's a huge fan of the genre - and you ignite his love of it again. You both take turns on a weekly movie night picking a romance of your choice. Lucifer cries a little at every one tbh.

○ You do home concerts together! It's only ever for the two of you, playing wholeheartedly for one another on your favourite instruments. Lucifer is an avid fiddler, and will play in compliment to you. Writing songs together about one another is something you both hold dear.
