Week Seven - Exercises + Messaging

In class the focus was on solidifying the message and big idea of our campaigns. As we move into the testing, making, and prototyping stage of our campaigns, having a solid grasp on this will be very important. The main idea of my campaign is that microplastics are being ingested and are harmful. When I talked to Paul, we discussed how the main obstacle for my campaign to communicate is to make people care about the issue. This is a similar obstacle faced by anti smoking campaigns, because despite the knowledge that smoking is harmful being very well known, it doesn’t put everyone off.

Sketches

Some sketches of character ideas. For the poster task I didn’t end up using this as It didn’t fit with the style of my other elements. However, the what’s for dinner? slogan used in some of these sketches did guide me quite a lot for the poster activity. I also didn’t feel like the animal personification was relevant to my campaign either. However, I did think a mosquito could be a possible animal as they are harmful, quite universal, and in large numbers.

From these sketches I used some ideas in the making of some draft digital assets. I like the idea of the bite marks, as it is a very distilled way of communicating ingestion. I tried using the marks in a typographic arrangement and as a logographic idea.

Is there anything more delicious than a handful of blueberries? Native to North America, these tasty berries are only 10% sugar and qualify as having a low glycemic index. So even though they taste like a handful of candy, they are much, much better for you. They also have high amounts of vitamin K and manganese, which both help to maintain strong bones. You may have also heard that they are jam-packed with anthocyanin, which is the pigment that gives them the beautiful dark blue / purple color. This is true, but it is still unclear if this is a benefit or not for humans. Some claim the pigment is an “antioxidant,” “anti-cancer,” “anti-aging” super molecule. The truth is that when studied in test tubes, anthocyanin does act as an antioxidant, meaning it prevents oxidizing damage to cells. However, studies on live humans have not replicated these results or shown any benefits to consuming anthocyanin. The claims have therefore become controversial and we’ll need more studies to better understand the effects on humans. While we wait for more studies to either prove or disprove the benefits of that deep blue pigment, we might as well enjoy a handful of these tasty little jewels.
