Re-reading Sherlock Holmes and it strikes me all over again that the main draw of this man is not his intelligence but his kindness and courteousness towards his distressed clients, most especially women. I was like ten when I read my Dad's copy of Adventures and so fascinated and attached to him immediately. It could never be replicated by modern interpretations, especially Moffat's Sherlock. *soul deep shudder* I hated the series from the get-go and couldn't figure out why until I saw that Tumblr post that pointed it out.
Also? Irene Adler's sexualisation is obviously gross and so much less progressive and agentive than the version this Victorian man wrote, but I'm also repulsed by the sexualisation of Sherlock Holmes. The man hasn't had a boner in his life. It's canon that he's never had any interest in women and his only close relationship with a man was Watson, and all power to slash fans, but there's absolutely nothing in canon that hints at anything but a friendship of, get this, mutual respect and admiration. This is the most aroace character in the English canon is what I'm saying, and the most generous interpretation of his relationship with Watson is a queerplatonic connection.
TL;DR: Perpetually flabbergasted how we got from a very gentlemanly, deeply compassionate, grown-ass adult who never talks down to Watson nor burdens anyone, to this entitled misogynistic manbaby with the social skills of a hornet.

Saw a post trying to claim that the cutesy Sherlock interactions on tumblr stopped because cringe culture happened. And I’m here to say it stopped because a lot of people realized that show was absolutely fucking garbage. And the only people left to like it are people who ship the two blandest white boys alive or are conspiracy theorists about the show.

I've heard about the phenomenon of SuperWhoLock, and I don't think any of those shows are that great (with the possible exception of Doctor Who). Supernatural sounds like a dumb horror show (and you know how I hate horror), Sherlock doesn't sound much better (I read a bunch of the original short stories a few years ago, and enjoyed those however) and doctor who has always had a better cast than a better story, but that's just because I hate horror and sci-fi. My favorite doctor is Jon Pertwee. His fashion sense was so fancy and eloquent, and his stories seem more like spy stories.

Sometimes I wanna return to that Sherlock AU I started plotting like four years ago, where Sebastian is part of Lestrade's team and has just NO patience for Sherlock. He might get to the cabbie from A Study in Pink on ways different from Sherlock and when the cabbie tries his game on Sebastian he'd just arrest him and let the state attorneys figure out if and how he could be tried for the "murders". Which would of course draw Jim's attention, so they could eventually devolve into a Hannigram-esque dynamic...

You know how I complain about the lack of emotional resolution in The Final Problem? It's not an issue exclusive to that episode.
In The Great Game, there is an explosion at 221B, when John enters the room expecting to see a hurt or injured Sherlock, but instead, we see Mycroft and Sherlock talk about a case.
Why is this interesting? We know Mycroft went straight there after he heard about the explosion, most likely for reasons other than the case like, idk, to check if his brother is still alive? We are not shown that. If Mycroft showed any concern towards him, it is entirely off screen.
We are shown Mycroft watch Sherlock get tortured and speak to him in bad Serbian (why was the Serbian so bad? Was it supposed to be bad?), mirror the actions of his torturers and refer to his torture as a "holiday."
What are we not shown? Mycroft helping him out of the chains. Arranging for him to get his wounds mended. Any possible show of concern. See a pattern?
The Great Game was mostly from John's pov, so it makes sense there. John wasn't there. Here you have no excuse, as season 3 is mostly Sherlock's pov.
So why did they not show us that? They were afraid of consequences. It's the same reason the Lazarus explanation felt like a retcon and a cop-out to people.
I saw a hypothesis that just as Option 1 was Anderson's fantasy and Option 2 was the fangirl fantasy, Lazarus is Sherlock's fantasy.
In this version, he had the events perfectly in control, Mycroft didn't cause him to get screwed over and it was all intentional and they worked together, John, Mrs H and Lestrade were not in any real danger, Sherlock didn't get as emotional on the roof and didn't cry etc. etc. etc.
You see if Mycroft was to blame for the fall, if he was what truly led to Sherlock's downfall and it wasn't all premeditated, you would have to address that.
Sherlock would be angry with him. He would resent him for something he actually did as opposed to a vague reason we were never given or explained.
You wanted to play with emotional stakes, but you didn't want any relationships to actually evolve.
That's why John's beating of Sherlock is not addressed in The Final Problem even when it would be relevant.
That's why Molly is shown back in 221B at the end when the last time we saw her, Eurus put her friendship with Sherlock in serious jeopardy if not outright kill it.
That's why they wrote Rosie into the show and then did next to nothing with her.
That's why 221B explodes and then is rebuilt in a quick montage at the end of the episode.
That's why Eurus is put back into the very same prison she had no issue mindfucking everyone in and escaping from.
That's why we don't see Sherlock reacting to Mycroft being freed or have them discuss events of Sherrinford.
Because they wanted to put these characters through hell, but not actually have anything change.

Some tinhat in the Will Darling Adventures tag said that it's "obviously JohnLock fanfiction rewritten", which is the most horrible thing anybody could have ever said about KJ Charles, a historical romance novellist who thinks the entire aristocracy should be beheaded and writes characters of colour like they're just people. The only JohnLock resemblance I can see is the fact that Kim's a tall, self-flagellating idiot who looks a bit like a worried greyhound and Will an endearingly decent, unbelievably obstinate, terrifyingly pragmatic ex-army officer with a craving for homicidal violence like a nicotine habir. But, very crucially, both these characters are openly and deeply concerned about other people, don't treat their loved ones like shit, and generally act like normal, likeable human beings instead of egotistical self-absorbed shitstains. They're also, crucially, far younger and better looking.
Unfortunately, now that it's in my head I cannot unsee it because I am a pathetically suggestible person. Kim is easier not to cast as Bendydick Cabbagepatch because he's really not anything like Sherlock and instead so quite clearly evocative of a lissom 1920s silent film star. Will, otoh, being the POV character, doesn't give any clear description of himself at all except for being the absolute personification of mulish just-getting-on-with-it-ness, which regrettably leaves my mind too much room to conjure that racist piece of damp Hobbit bread whose only facial expression is of Some Guy stuck in the permanent realization that the crosswalk light isn't working. It's no good to reason that Will must be good-looking enough to score a hottie like Kim, which would necessarily rule out Freeman at every stage of his life. Or that Will is fundamentally not a secret asshole nor impressed by assholes and would in fact go out of his way to give a smug superior smartypants clotpole like Sherlock a wedgie out of a sense of social obligation.
It is a mistake to scroll Tumblr tags before reading things. There's too many white queers shipping middle-aged moldy white cis het toast everywhere.

Nothing like getting into Elementary after being a BBC Sherlock fan for so long. Sherlock was overhyped to the point where I was barely aware of Elementary's existence. Now having finished the first season of Elementary, I find it to be infinitely superior. (The same way I find the Davies era of Doctor Who infinitely superior to Moffat's, but that's a rant for another time.) It's incredible how a show can have roughly the same premise and elements and yet one can be so vastly superior.
Miller's Sherlock Holmes has many of the same flaws as Cumberbatch's. Miller's Sherlock can be abrasive and insensitive and even demanding at times, and yet he's far more likeable than Cumberbatch's. Elementary Sherlock Holmes endeavors to acknowledge his failings and apologize, he endeavors to do better. Where BBC Sherlock Holmes loves to humiliate people to prove his cleverness, Elementary Sherlock tries (with mixed results) not to cross lines that are too personal. Elementary Sherlock Holmes doesn't view everyone around him as a complete and utter imbecile; he respects those who put him in his place when he's being an ass. Elementary Sherlock cares about the well-being of others and at times barely manages to keep his anger under wraps when he deals with the evil of the world.
(Of course, it's okay to write a character with flaws, but when you romanticize those flaws it is quickly exhausting to watch.)
I'm usually a little hard on American adaptations despite being an American myself, but CBS Elementary respects its viewers whereas BBC Sherlock insists on treating you like a complete and utter imbecile for having the gall to ask about the giant plot holes littered throughout the show.
CBS Elementary tells a compelling story about Sherlock's struggle with mental health and addiction that humanizes the character. Sherlock has an interesting and compelling dynamic with his family where he feels neglected by his father, correctly predicting yet another failure to follow through at dinner. BBC Sherlock gives us a background for the main character that makes no sense after the writer said it would be a mistake to go there.
BBC Sherlock takes one of the most iconic female antagonists of all time and just... ruins the whole story with her. Elementary respects its female characters, isn't an all-white cast, and responds to the possibility of people being LGBT with a mere shrug, as if it's nothing out of the ordinary. (In stark contrast to BBC Sherlock that reminds you every five minutes its main characters aren't gay and then decided that they'd make their main villain scary by having him act gay to the point where it's noted by characters on screen, including said villain himself. Also his main motivation is he's obsessed with the main character I guess??)
It's... wild to think that all this time I could have been enjoying a show that didn't make me feel like an idiot for liking it. Oh well, I get to enjoy it now.

the way some of tg says tb is boring cause they're loving perfect family who don't do anything interesting while greens is just better cause they're bunch of criminals but the moment anyone from tb commits any crime y'all like nope, i draw a line here, you're an awful person, nothing can excuse you and give a list of all terrible things tb did... as if seconds ago you didn't say they're "so perfect" and you prefer interesting flawed characters of team green who actually do something
