Book Notes: A Suffragist’s Guide to the Antarctic
Tumblr media
My reading in the first quarter of this year has had an inadvertent theme of suffragists and polar exploration. I haven’t gone out searching for them; these books keep finding me. Which was made all the more obvious when I picked up Yi Shun Lai’s YA historical, A Suffragist’s Guide to the Antarctic.
Clara Kettering-Dunbar is 18 years old and the sole female in a British expedition to the Antarctic in the close of the year 1914. An American veteran of the suffrage movement in Britain, posing as a Canadian, Clara knows she is already pushing the boundaries of what women are societally expected to do. She does have supporters amongst the expedition crew, namely the captain, but just as many who expect her to fail. It will take all of Clara’s strength of will, and an ability to reach beyond her own well-earned beliefs, to see the lessons to be learned from the Antarctic and from her fellow crew.
The account is told as journal entries, and Clara lays bare not only her various experiences, but also her unvarnished feelings in these circumstances. She slowly reveals her unconventional upbringing, her complicated parents, and how she became involved in the suffrage movement. In all that she faces, Clara boldly stands up for her beliefs. Despite coming up against unrelenting misogyny from certain members of the crew, she will not relent in demonstrating her fitness to be part of the team. And then there’s the cold. I could feel it in my bones reading about all the many layers Clara puts on to keep herself warm, and the constant juggling required to keep the crew marginally protected and fed. Let’s just say that the Antarctic is something I’d much rather read about than actually experience. If you’re looking for a YA historical (that’s not World War II) taking on an unexpected pocket of history, give A Suffragist’s Guide to the Antarctic a try!
And if you’d like to meet the author in person, you’re in luck! We’re happy to welcome Yi Shun Lai to Island Books on Saturday, April 6th at 4:30pm. She’ll be in conversation with Justina Chen, and it’s sure to be a fascinating talk. We look forward to seeing you!

("Solar Farm" photo from the Wall Street Journal, Antarctica, 1998)
In 1950, the first solar farm was built in Antarctica. Pairing it with the immense amount of wind energy the country harvests, this led to the construction of new communities and cities, mostly in the "Four Points" county of the country.

Everyone in this work of fiction is aged up/18+, if that bothers you—block me or keep scrolling
One Shot? NSFW Headcannons? Both.
Warnings; yandere Yuuta vibes, cursing, possessive & obsessive behavior, violent threats (Yuuta threatens to snap somebody’s fingers), rough sex, biting, breath play, dirty talk, light smacking, reader getting stuffed
••••••
Yuuta who loves you wholeheartedly yet…painfully. Obsessively. More than obsession. Whose heart beats cruelly for you. Thumping in such a rhythm he’s sure it’s in tune with the pronunciation of your name. His love for you devours him completely—and he’s high on the way you love him.
Yuuta who lets you be privy to all the dark, depraved thoughts that seem to constantly rattle through his brain.
Yuuta who aches when he has to be apart from you. Who would crawl inside your skin if he could. Who tells you so often. (your feelings are mutual)
Yuuta who takes you out bar hopping on occasion. Who gets a thrill showing off what’s his. Whose gaze is intense as he watches another below average man attempt to dance with you, his arm brushing your wrist. Who gets a sick sort pleasure curling in his chest as he takes note of the bitchy expression on your face when you shut him down.
Yuuta who throws back a shot easily. Who saunters over from his spot at the bar. Who approaches you casually, hands tucked away in his pockets, curled into fists. Whose lips are pulled into a sweet grin, sleepy eyes flitting between you and below average Joe.
Yuuta whose entirely fake calm demeanor forces a cold thrill to shiver down your spine, because you know the beast that lurks just beneath. Who makes your blood thrum as he leans into the man’s face, lazy smile never faltering when he speaks.
Yuuta who you know has a boiling rage licking in between his rib cage when he threatens the man with a serene voice. Your hair stands on end when Yuuta’s posture drops the temperature around you by a few degrees. Who tells the stranger in a voice that rivals the Antarctic, I’ll snap your fucking fingers one by one if you ever touch what’s mine again. (your heart’s in your throat. you need Yuuta to take you home. now.)
Yuuta who studies the man’s face as it pales, as he turns, running with his tail tucked between his legs. Yuuta who then turns to you, smile so sweet your teeth ache.
Yuuta who lets his fingers grip your wrist too tightly. Forcing your finger tips to pulsate from lack of blood flow as he drags you out the bar & to your home. (The anticipatory butterflies knock around your belly because you know he’s gonna remind you who you belong too—you can’t fucking wait)
Yuuta who lets the tension in the air thicken to the point of suffocating. Who whistles a bright tune as he walks leisurely to your bedroom—giving you chills at how eerie it is. Who lets you follow behind before he’s slamming the door hard enough to rock the foundation.
Yuuta who slams you up against the door, your skull knocking into the wood. Pain radiating down to your neck. Whose finger tips dig harshly into the muscle of your jaw as he forces it to stay shut.
Yuuta whose face flattens into an expression you’ve only ever seen on sociopaths. Whose sanpaku eyes look empty, but you know he’s livid on the inside.
Yuuta who invades your personal space, making your teeth creak in his grasp. Who murmurs low & rough you wanted to watch me break that fuckers arm didn’t you baby? You can only whine in agreement, body flushing hotly.
Yuuta who hums in acknowledgment. Who gives you a pretty smile because he knows you’re just as twisted as he is. Who coos you only have to ask, my heart—I’ll slice anyone in half if you so desire. You know how much I love you.
Yuuta who lets go of your jaw, kissing you eagerly, teeth knocking yours. Whose lips are hot, slick but ultimately soft when they meet yours again & again. Who moans beautifully into your mouth, tongue playing sweetly with yours.
Yuuta who then bites down on your warm tongue—hard enough to make you bleed. Who grins, giggling into your kiss when you sink your own teeth into his lower lip just as brutally. Pulling on it. Releasing it with a wet pop.
Yuuta who strips you both bare. Whose cock is already achingly hard as he forces you onto your back on the bed. Who places a warm palm in the middle of your sternum, roughly pinning you to the mattress. Who admires the way your tits gently bounce whenever you squirm under his grip.
Yuuta who pushes two fingers into your mouth, purring at you to suck them like you’re sucking my cock baby. Who groans softly when you do just as you’re told. Who rips his fingers from your mouth—sinking his canines into the flesh of your shoulder & gripping your tits. Who lets his shaft spread the lips of your slick pussy, rolling his hips—never letting his teeth free of your shoulder.
Yuuta who listens to you whimper & choke on your moans, whining Yuuta, please my love—nngh, want you to fuck me! Who finally releases his bite, who stares down at you with a reassuring half smile—who then smacks you across the cheek hard enough to whip your head to one side, making you yelp. Who knows you love when he treats you this way.
Yuuta who is still too pissed off about earlier, not wasting any more energy on foreplay tonight. Who knows your pussy drools for him anyways as he bends to your whim—even if he tries not to show it.
Yuuta who sits back on his heels. Who presses just the tip inside your warm, silky pussy—already trying to swallow his cock entirely. Who listens to your soft cries of pleasure & fills you completely with no hesitation, no resistance. Who moans with you when his balls are snug against your ass.
Yuuta whose eyes flutter shut as he grips your ankle, pulling one leg over his shoulder. Who bends forward, splitting you open over & over as he fucks you harshly from the beginning. Who revels in the wet hiccups & whines you’re gifting him. Pleading just like—oh fuck! fuck yes Yuuta, right there, please make me cum!
Yuuta who laughs humorlessly, cock pulsing when your sweet voice begs for him. Who purposely lets his tip kiss your cervix repeatedly. Whose tone is so mean when he speaks oh? you wanna cum? then you better fucking cum hard on my cock. your pussy is all for me, my heart. I own you—don’t forget it.
Yuuta who braces a hand on the bed, bending you further in half. Who uses the large palm of his free hand to encase your mouth & nose, cutting off your air. Who tilts his hips just right, taunting you—mm if you don’t wanna pass out, you better cum quickly for me. Who chomps down on his lower lip while he gazes at your face, eyes eternally sleepy. Who loves the feel of your nails sinking into his forearms.
Yuuta who feels his balls tighten up when your back arches off the bed, writhing because you can’t breathe. Who can feel your pussy starting to flutter as your eyes roll back in your head. Who snarls god, you’re gonna cum aren’t you? looks like you’re running out of air, but who isn’t fairing any better. Whose cheeks are bright red, who’s huffing as he thrusts, who has sweat trailing down his temple.
Yuuta who inhales sharply through his teeth as your pussy gets unbearably tight, who immediately allows you to breathe as soon as you start to cum, suffocating his cock in the best kind of way. Who makes you dizzy with the intensity of your orgasm as your lungs burn for air.
Yuuta who does a 180. Mouth falling open, eyebrows scrunching. Mean streak disappearing completely. Who lets out a sweet moan as he lets your leg down, smothering his face in your neck. Whose breath hitches, whining fuck—ah, I’m gonna cum baby. Whose cock twitches as he starts to climax, shallowly thrusting, stuffing you full with sticky ribbons of his release.
Yuuta who chants, I love you baby, love you so goddamn much. I’ll do anything for you, my heart. Who pants hotly against your skin as he goes limp, snaking his arms underneath you in a tight hug.
Yuuta who all but purrs as your nails scratch soothingly over his scalp, sending shivers down his spine. Who feels warm & pleasantly gooey when you coo at him, whispering his praises & how much you love him into his ear as you lay intertwined.
Yuuta who takes care of you afterwards, cleaning you up, rubbing your back and hugging you close under the blankets. Who tells you how good you were for him, what a sweet girl you are. Whispering he loves you at least a thousand times. Who turns you around to be his little spoon, molding his body to the back of yours. Who slips an arm around your waist, forehead pressed against your back.
Yuuta who loves you an unhealthy amount. Who’s menacing, insane—unbelievably loving. But it’s all okay with you, you’re just as obsessed as he is.

So we know that when Quirks first appeared, villains started making grabs for power, vigilantes appeared to stop them and restore the normal order, and some people went about forming their own dynasties with people who had similar powers.
Personally, I really want to hear more about the environmentalist vigilantes who ignored the immediate chaos and just took off to undo the harm humanity caused to nature.
People with ice Quirks who formed a coalition and rebuilt the arctic and antarctic circles.
A random person with a Quirk that allowed them to breathe in carbon gases and exhale oxygen, so they just took a couple hours out of their day peacefully reading books near a factory complex while advocating for cleaner emissions in the meantime.
The ones with plant-based Quirks stimulating plant growth in deforested areas.
Someone with an accumulation-type Quirk who could consume plastic and convert it to energy.
Other Quirk-users specifically targeting poachers
Electricity Quirk-users forming power companies of their own and stamping out the more harmful competition.
People who can talk to animals teaching animals hunted for sport (or harvested for medicinal remedies that don't work) how to avoid hunters and traps.
In the eyes of large corporations, some of these people were probably relegated to the status of villains and may have been targeted by the proto-Heroes as such, only to be met with the controversy of environmental advocates against environmentally destructive companies.
Fictional nations like Otheon and Klayd have sprung up in the My Hero world, so it stands to reason there are other new nations as well. Like if these early advocates carved out territories of their own and now areas like the Amazon or pockets of the savannah and taiga and other threatened ecosystems are currently independent oases thriving in the world.
All things considered, I feel like for all their societal problems, the My Hero world is a world that at least has its environmental stuff sorted out.

BECAUSE YOU DEMANDED IT, I'm back with more Sad Boat Books for Sad Boat People! But first, some words.
I never dreamed that a silly little graphic I made for some friends would generate this much response on twitter and here, but I'm overjoyed that it resonated with so many of you! I read every single comment and tag, and by far my favorites are all of the people who say some variation of "I thought I was the only one who loved these books." We are NOT alone, there are literally thousands of people who reblogged or retweeted this list-- people of all ages and backgrounds and gender identities. Sad Boat isn't just for old white men! I was also delighted to hear from other librarians who are using this in displays and for reader's advisory. PLEASE go forth and do so with my blessing, nothing would make me happier! I was recently laid off from my librarian job as part of a restructuring under new management (don't worry about me, it sucks right now but I'm gonna be fine), so I would love to think that I'm still contributing to the library ecosystem while I'm out of commission. I would also love to keep making these lists (including one that deals with Sad Boat fiction and one with recommendations for other types of media), and I've never had more time to do it, so if you have suggestions, please drop them in my inbox!
Anyway, enough of that-- here are more books! I've either read all of these, or the recommendation came from someone I trust, so read with confidence!

Alright, memes aside--if you had to design a snake to live in Antarctica, what would you create? (With the blanket assumption that this forbidden Antarctic snake is capable of surviving the insanely cold temperatures since this is the obvious reason they aren't there).
Oooh that's tough. My first instinct...you know that fur-bearing trout cryptid? This thing?
Tumblr media
Like that, but a snake. If I'm going to give this fictional snake the best tools at my disposal to help them survive in Antarctica, the least I can do is make sure they have a coat.
That out of the way, here's what I'd do with my Antarctic snake:
They'd be diurnal so they'd be able to take advantage of what scant basking opportunity presents itself.
They'd have to be small snakes (it's easier for a small snake to stay warm) but built very heavily (so they could have an insulating layer of fat).
I'm imagining they're semi-aquatic and eat small fish.
They'd probably spend a huge chunk of the year brumating. They might wake up for as little as one month, eat a ton, breed, and then go right back to sleep. Efficiency.

Can we have a little info on all the ones you haven't drawn yet, even the Maybe Canon? ones? There's a few there I don't recognize at all, and I'm curious.
Sure thing!
Not Drawn Yet:
The angont – a serpentine dragon from North East USA and Eastern Canada
The Australian rainbow serpent – exactly as the name implies. Rainbow serpent from Australia.
Chicken headed serpents – I didn’t know about this until I read @a-book-of-creatures excellent article on Crowing Crested Cobras. I need to actually research these myself, I read the article, thought “these are cool, I will add them to Dracones Mundi”, and then didn’t read/write/draw further (yet!!!!!).
The grootslang or ‘Great Snake’ is from South African folklore.
The kongomato, a winged dragon from the Congo.
The kurrea, a crocodile serpent from Australia
The makara, a creature like a crocodile mixed with an elephant from south Asian folklore: for Dracones Mundi I am making it a relative of the phaya naga.
The markupo is a large red-crested serpent from the Phillippines.
The ropen is a glowing, flying dragon from New Guinea – I might make it a relative of the glowtail in Dracones Mundi lore
Taniwha are water spirits from New Zealand – in Dracones Mundi I am making them a species of sea serpent
Wanizame or wani are sea dragons from Japanese folklore.
Vaguely planned dragons:
The Antarctic Jaculus – dragon I 100% made up, because I was bragging about how Dracones Mundi has ‘dragons all over the map’ and a little snide voice in my head said “what, even Antarctica?” and as Antarctica is not inhabited by people for most of the year it was difficult to find folkloric serpents, so I made up another sea-bird inspired dragon. Both cliffwyrms and Antarctic Jaculus have diving behaviours, which is why their inland cousin, the jaculus, evolved it's divebombing hunting strategy.
Butterfly winged serpent; very small winged serpent with butterfly wing patterns, 100% fictional with no mythology behind it (I mean. There is Pyrausta. But I think Pyrausta would be a different sort of animal, an actual insect, in the Dracones Mundi world, so butterfly winged serpents are not pyrausta)
Oceanic Turtle Dragon; I have the Asian turtle dragon, the European turtle dragon and the Congo Plated Dragon. Running around looking for folklore on ‘turtle dragons’ you end up stumbling into some fantastic artwork for Dungeons and Dragons involving their take on turtle dragons and something about a sea-turtle inspired dragon is really fun and cool. I will see if I can do something unique and different with this concept. If not, I will not be including the oceanic turtle dragon.
Pterosaur dragon; I made dinodrakes as dragons inspired by retro palaeoart of dinosaurs, and I thought “hmm. What if I did the same for retro pterosaurs?” – it turns out there’s a lot of cryptozoology in Africa I could research into for placing these pterosaur dragons somewhere on the map.
Snapdragons; snapdragon flowers need to be named after dragons, so I have a fun idea for a small cave dwelling dragon with petal-like frills and barbels that it uses to sense it’s environment. They also can emit an eerie blue warning glow from their mouths, not dissimilar to the glow of brandy on fire in the Victorian game ‘snap dragon’.

Queer book recs from IFM's editors
Mantha's Rec(s)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner Series and Tamír Triad
Any chance Mantha gets they recommend Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner Series and Tamír Triad. Both set in the same world but in two different eras, these fantasy series have become so dear to them over the years.
The Nightrunner books are part fantasy, part political intrigue, part murder mystery, all while exploring themes of belonging and identity. And while they don't have genders outside the binary, the two main characters are bi, cis men (with a little gender-nonconformity in there, too.)
The Tamír Triad tells the coming of age story of a trans girl at court in the midst of political upheaval: think Knights of the Round Table but King Arthur is trans.
Flewelling's writing is impeccable. She has a gift for character, detail, and setting that creates immersive worlds. Though not recent publications - the first book came out in 1996 - they were the first books Mantha read that showed them that the sky was truly the limit in fantasy writing.
Lydia's Rec
Tumblr media
All the White Spaces by Ally Wilkes
Not for the faint of heart, All the White Spaces by Ally Wilkes is a historical thriller in which a trans man stows away on an expedition ship bound for the Antarctic from England.
Set just after WWII, the stakes are quickly raised when the ship - the only way the expedition is getting home - is destroyed just shy of their destination. Missing most of the crew and nearly all their supplies, the few remaining members of the expedition must find a way to survive the winter in Antarctica.
Stumbling across a German expedition's camp seems like a stroke of good luck - but where did the Germans go (and would they even believe the war was over?), and what lurks in the darkness just outside of the lamp light?
Sione's Rec
Tumblr media
Life Ceremony by Sayaka Murata
If you're a short story reader who loves weird, slightly dark speculative fiction (think George Saunders, Miranda July, Alexander Weinstein, Carmen Maria Machado), Sione highly recommends Sayaka Murata's book of short stories, Life Ceremony, which came out in paperback in May.
While the stories don't contain genders outside the binary, there is gay rep, asexual and aromantic spectrum rep, and neurodiversity rep.
But what really gets zir excied about this book are the themes! This is basically an entire short story collection about what's normal, who decides, and how changeable our social norms and taboos are, which opens a window into a future with many queer and neurodivergent possibilities. Ze hasn't been this excited about a new book in a very long time.

One thing I hate about BookTok
They basically pushed teenagers out of reading. Up until 2016, it was common to find a YA Novel with 13, 14 and 15 year-old protagonists, with the occasional 16 and 17 year old protagonist. In an essay I'm currently writing, there is this quote "A 13, 14, 15 and even 16 year old would see themselves in one of the teens, even if their world is fictional. Stanley digging holes in the desert, Hester and Tom's adventures, Bella falling in love with a vampire, Tally discovering the dark truth of society, the young Antarctic explorers trying to survive, Jimmy and Claire teaming up against zombies and Katniss and Peeta's love story and the revolution sparked by their win". The line is a reference to the fact that the main characters are indeed teenagers.

Cocoon (Original selkie romance, Chapter 3)
Tumblr media
Cocoon || Shipwrecked Sailor/Selkie || Explicit || 38k, In Progress
Trans Male Character, Shipwrecks, Wilderness Survival, Romance, Selkies, Cannibalism, Amputation, Blood and Injury, Huddling For Warmth, Ambiguous/Open Ending, Hopeful Ending, Mildly Dubious Consent, Fever, Abusive Parents, Fairy Tale Elements, Hurt/Comfort, Despair, Oral Sex, Frottage, Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, Animal Death (For the purposes of food)
William Caldwell is a man, and always has been. In order to escape his cruel, abusive father, and to live his life as he has always wished to, William signs up as a deckhand aboard the HMS Fearless, a ship bound for the antarctic circle. When the Fearless is sunk somewhere well south of Australia, in icy waters too frigid to navigate without a full crew, William is left stranded on a remote and deserted island with no food, no water, and no company. Except for the seal that might have saved him.
Chapter 3! Please check the author's note at the beginning regarding this chapter, because now the tags for "amputation" and "blood and injury" are coming into play!
You can read it on AO3!
As always, thank you for reading, and if you are enjoying my writing think about reblogging this! Original fiction doesn't get nearly as much traction as fanfic does, even though it's every bit as free!

A note on transportation…
Public transportation is the easiest way to get around the various cities across Antarctica. Each city has their own unique take on bus design, but they all are required to be eclectic, and also need to be able to handle the snowy terrain.
