This cover is so important.

This is one of the retail incentive covers of IDW Sonic issue 1, 5th Anniversary Edition, illustrated by Adam Bryce Thomas and coloured by Reggie Graham. When I look at it, something about it tells a story to me, and that story is beautiful.

Sonic and Amy are at the Riverside Romp with Cream and Vanilla, but the rabbits are clearly giving them some space while doing their own thing.

Riverside is the town where Sonic and Amy meet for the first time in the comic series. The archway that holds the sign is also one of the decaying legs from Eggman’s crab mech, the first mech they fight together. Riverside is incredibly symbolic to them both, like how Never Lake would be in the games.

Their journey started rocky at Riverside. They couldn’t see eye-to-eye and had different approaches to how they both could help restore the world after the war. And yet, they still fully respected each other, dishing out compliments and praise and a desire to work together (in different ways). Amy even professes her love for Sonic and vows to him that she never wants to change him, and he bashfully asks her to stay with him in return. They cared for each other, loved each other, immensely then, and now, they’ve chosen to return to Riverside stronger as a pair and as individuals.

Sonic and Amy spend their day together, but they’re both their own people. Amy fawns over the sweets and the loving decorations while Sonic ogles a chilidog. They both indulge in their interests, but close together. One doesn’t need to be exactly like the other, and neither of them want that for the other. As long as they know the other’s there and always will be, that’s all they need. Being their own people despite their connection is what strengthens their bond, because the admiration they have for each other and their differences is so high.

But then, they still want to be together. They dance and cheer with interlocked fingers while sparks fly between their hearts. Cherry blossom petals sway around them, delighting in new beginnings and young love. Sonic and Amy compliment each other, bringing out the brighter sides of theirs souls. Amy’s having the time of her life, living in the moment knowing that Sonic is there with her now and always. But, beautifully, Sonic’s living the moment with with her, taking in her excitement and beauty. He usually doesn’t allow himself the pleasure, but he can’t help it, now.

Sonic and Amy have such a deep understanding of each other that it transcends language. They are in love, and I am in love with them.

Okay 4 things in the new Scrapnik Island Issue #3 I can't get over.

For #1:

Sonic is in danger and Tails immediately makes guns for himself and his new squad. Just no Sonic around and he goes straight to making lethal weaponry.

Bonus 1.5:

He blep when concentrating

For #2:

Tails went full Black Ops strike team with a little 'gamerish trying to sound cool' lingo there and I love him for it. "Stay Frosty you guys" is so cheesy and I love it. Look at him take charge and lead a covert ops team. He got whole outfit on too. It's a look not gonna lie.

For #3:

Mecha does remember Tails can fly right????...like he's not a character you can let gravity decide this with...he can fly. I feel like next issue is gonna have a moment with Tails where he basically comes back, looks Mecha in the eyes and is basically is like "...are you dumb???...cause I think you might stupid or have very poor planning....I can fly rust nuts remember"

Maybe the walls are too close for him to fly but this has to come back and bite Mecha in the ass. It's just shock value bait I'm calling it now you can't just drop a flying character and think "welp that's the end of that!!... dum de dum dee dum going about my day now" with no consequences.

And lastly #4:

I will never shut up about this. Look at Sonic he gets one hint Tails might be in danger or hurt and protective older brother instincts go into over drive. He get out of those restraints before Tails shows back up okay and he might be catching a metal body, forget any moral codes he has. Sonic just looks like he's about to go off on Mecha when he thinks Tails might be in danger.

Extra Bonus:

Do you know how much I would give if they let Tails go off here. You know Tails the character who canonically was living on his own as a tiny child in the woods and then found and practically raised by Sonic cause he had been abandoned and ostracized by his own village and possibly parents. Just when Mecha said this I wish they basically let Tails reply with a:

"Bitch join the club, you ain't special"

Cause like out of anyone Mecha could talk to that understands that feeling of being abandoned and forgotten....it's gonna be Tails. He chose the wrong person to try and use the "oh you could never understand me" trope on. Welcome to Tails whole backstory Mecha you empty soup can for a brain.

Pete wakes up by Vegas' choked cries echoing in his ears. He's trembling below the white sheets, clutching onto Pete's T-shirt with both hands like a lifeline. Another nightmare. Pete sighs and shakes his shoulder softly to snap him out of it. Vegas gasps and opens his eyes, his gaze full of fear and contempt. It doesn't go away when Vegas realizes he's looking at Pete and not at the hungry ghost that's been haunting his dreams since the coup. The dream must have involved Pete somehow. He tries not to think about how hurt he feels. "Vegas," he whispers; any words uttered at a higher volume would make Vegas flinch. Pete doesn't want that. "It's ok. He's not here." He moves his hand closer to Vegas' face with the intention to wipe the stray tear trickling down his hollow cheek, but Vegas slaps it away. Pete's breath hitches. "Fuck you." It's fine. Vegas is just shaken from the dream. He didn't get punished. He's not holding anything in his hands to drop. There's nothing to ruin. Pete barely notices how tense his own body is. He does when Vegas burrows his head at the crook of his neck and sobs. Pete slowly relaxes as he caresses Vegas' back, mimicking the way his grandma used to do it years ago. "I hate this," he hears Vegas murmur after he manages to calm down. His hot breath makes Pete shiver and smile all at once. "How did you make it stop?" he asks, and it sounds like a genuine question. There's a mistake Vegas always makes when it comes to Pete. He thinks Pete looks down on him for being stuck in the past, stuck in his desperation to get approval from someone who never gave it to him, someone who never will. But there's a reason Pete doesn't box anymore. There are cracks in the mirror, but the reflection remains the same. Pete can't bare to look.
