"By comparison with numerous ‘workshop’ versions, this rediscovered print from an apparently lost portrait of Anne Boleyn has every appearance of an authentic likeness, with its claim to represent Anne supported by Sir Roy Strong’s Tudor and Jacobean iconography and Eric Ives’s work in establishing a link between the portrait style and the gold and enamel image in the ‘Queen Elizabeth’s ring’, currently held by the Trustees of Chequers. Two copies of the print have so far emerged – one revealing the inscription near the top: ANNA BOLINA UXOR HVIII, perhaps added at a later date, and the other, of lesser quality, showing a little more of the shadowed background to the portrait and of the sitter’s wide black sleeves. It would not appear that the portrait is by Holbein. But in style and pose it does correspond closely to other contemporary female paintings by the German artist, Joos van Cleve, particularly his 1530 portrait of Eleanor, Queen of France (below).

[...] It is further significant that its sitter’s features, unlike those of other ‘workshop’ copies, bear close comparison with the Holbein ‘Anne Boleyn’ drawing in the British Museum, which has been and is still disputed as a likeness. With the ‘Van Cleve’ portrait reversed and the two images set side by side, the lines of forehead, cheek and chin appear virtually identical. The long, narrow jawline – also evident in portraits of Anne’s daughter, Elizabeth, and of her Howard and Carey relatives – is accentuated in the painting by the (invisibly narrow) ribbon which holds the French crépine head-dress in place. The shapes of the nose, mouth and brows, a little flattered in the painting, are essentially similar; while something indefinable in the expression of the dark eyes establishes a common likeness.

Moreover, there are good reasons for supposing that Van Cleve had the opportunity to paint Anne Boleyn in 1532. His well attested portrait of Henry VIII has been dated for the early 1530s and it has been suggested that Van Cleve came to England for the commission. According to the Royal Collection Trust, this portrait ‘may have been painted to commemorate his visit to Calais in 1532’. In fact, it is more likely that the King sat for the artist in Calais or Boulogne during the visit itself; and it follows that a portrait of Anne Boleyn by Van Cleve could also have been undertaken while she was there with him. It is known that Van Cleve was summoned to work at the French court by François I in the early 1530s, and the 32 days Henry and Anne spent in France in the autumn of 1532 would have allowed ample time for preliminary sketches, if not for completed portraits. The question of how a portrait of Anne Boleyn, sketched in 1532 and perhaps completed in time for her coronation in 1533, survived her disgrace and death in 1536, when other images of her were deliberately destroyed, might be explained by the fact that artists were frequently required to undertake multiple versions of royal portraits. Van Cleve was known for his ‘impressive studio organisation and collaboration’, and at least two versions of his portrait of Eleanor of France survive, wearing different costumes and jewellery. There are also two copies of Henry VIII’s portrait by Van Cleve, both of good quality, in the Royal Collection and that of Burghley House. If Anne Boleyn did sit for Van Cleve in Calais, one would expect official versions of the portrait to feature jewellery obtained for her from Katherine of Aragon in time for the French visit; (e.g. the jewelled cross with pendant pearl in Katherine’s miniature by Lucas Horenbout, and worn successively by Anne in her portrait medal of 1534, Queen Jane in the Whitehall Mural and by Catherine Parr in another Horenbout miniature.) Moreover, if the one surviving original portrait of Anne features a symbolically initialled ‘B’ pendant – with B being for Boleyn, rather than A for Anne – it was very possibly ordered by her father, Thomas Boleyn, for his portrait gallery at Hever, where a later copy hangs today. In similar circumstances, Edward Seymour commissioned his own portrait of his sister Jane. Nor is it hard to imagine a plausible chain of ownership for such a survival – from Thomas Boleyn’s death in 1539 – through Anna of Cleves, who gained Hever Castle and its contents as a part of her divorce settlement in 1541 – to her executor, Henry Fitzalan, who had charge of her effects on Anna’s death in 1557 – to his son-in-law, John, Baron Lumley, who inherited Fitzalan’s paintings in 1580 and included a likeness of Anne Boleyn in his inventory of 1590. It is known that Anna of Cleves personally occupied Hever Castle and would have been familiar with its paintings. If she had decided to sell a portrait of her disgraced predecessor by her countryman, Van Cleve – as a notable art collector, her friend Henry Fitzalan, Earl of Arundel would have been an obvious buyer. Alternatively, if she’d left the painting for his disposal as her executor, he’d surely have taken the opportunity to acquire it, having known Anne Boleyn personally and accompanied her to Calais in 1532. On Henry Fitzalan’s death, his art collection was merged with that of his son-in-law and heir, John, Baron Lumley, which a decade later certainly did include a portrait of Anne Boleyn. The fact that the portrait in the Lumley Inventory of 1590 is described as ‘full-length’ would not have made it unusual (Queens Jane Seymour and Catherine Parr were both painted full-length) or incompatible with other commissions for Joos van Cleve’s studio. We now know that the Lumley portrait was cut down at a later date; and if the rediscovered head-and-shoulders print is amalgamated with another three-quarter-length female portrait by Van Cleve (as below), some idea can be gained of how such a painting might originally have appeared."

A Gay Girl's Guide to Korean Musicals (with English subtitles!)

People often associate musicals with male gayness (both onstage and off) but there's stuff out there for female-oriented queers too! It's just harder to find, which is why I put this video together despite not knowing Korean.

This list isn't comprehensive and I deliberately chose musicals with either queer female characters or gender-free casting (i.e. female actors playing male roles), except for Bernarda Alba, which is special as it’s by far the largest-scale all-female production with 10 characters. Obviously there are many Korean musicals out there which don't meet these criteria and are still of interest to the queers, but I wanted to highlight these in particular as they are, apart from Rebecca, not as well-known. I highly recommend checking out @koreanmusicals for more information on Korean musicals generally!

Original ask:People keep saying this is Frances Brandon, but looking at the fashion and the features of the sitter, I feel it's Katherine of Aragon instead. What are your thoughts?

(we didnt have the photo originally, but now i can finally answer this).

-My first observation regarding this painting is that it cannot be Francis Brandon, because she was born in 1517. This is 1500s or 1510s fashion of Netherlands. No way she could be depicted in fashion which is from before she was even born!

On wikipedia it is labelled Portrait of Agniete van den Rijne, atributed to Joos van Cleve, located in Rijksmuseum Twenthe in Enschede, in Netherlands. And as being painted in 1st half of 16th century.

On webpage of the museum, it is labelled as Unknown woman in c.1515. I suspect it could be bit earlier(split gown, large hanging chains)-my guess would be late 1500s, max early 1510s. But my chronology of netherlandish fashion was based upon court fashion. And neckline this low is consistent with some parts of Habsburg Netherlands, but not the court. So I could be bit off. But either way-1500s or 1510s imo. Not Francis Brandon. She wasnt even born when this was in fashion.

As for Catherine of Aragon.

Not that she couldnt wear netherlandish fashion(Sittow's portrait)-but a)when she did wear it, it was same fashion as in court.

b) what cut photos deliberately left out, is that this painting has its original frame...which includes coat of arms.

And experts believe this coat of arms to be original.

They havent been able to identify it nor of the man matching the woman. But clearly not Catherine's coat of arms.

Also the focus here is on grapes-its fruit, its leaves and vines.

It is symbol of fertility and prosperity, as well as having several more meanings in christianity, but as far as i know never asociated with Catherine of Aragon specifically. And there is literally nothing to suggest it is her.

I agree that there is resemblence, but there is issue. The artist was skilled. So why upon closer inspection the nose looks so differently than hers?

Catherine's nose tip seemed to be pointing more up and it was not as large. With some people-for example Margaret of Austria, size of nose changes as they age(due to health issues). However Catherine even in mid 1520s, still has narrow nose with tip basically same as in her youth.

Angle might play part a bit...but imo it is simply different nose.

The resemblence alone cannot drive identification. Not only do we not have single major clue pointing towards Catherine, we have major clue against her(coat of arms). Also Henry was likely painted by the artist when he met Francis I at Calais-with Anne Boleyn. The artist was asociated a lot with Francis, but never proven to travel to England or to take comissions from English royal court...aside that one meeting.

I am sorry, it is not Catherine of Aragon.

I am as upset as you guys that we don't have any surviving portrait of her from 1510s, and that many portraits we only know from not so great copies.

To find more lost originals, looking through art of artists which painted relatives of the person is indeed very good strategy. It pays off in many cases. Unfortuntely not in case of Joos van Cleve.

But it might be good idea to look up painters employed by Charles V and by Francis I in 1520-because Catherine met both that year.

Henry and Charles even had joined portraits made back then.

So there is indeed potential that some portrait of Catherine was created and it might have went with visitor. And it could have been another joined portrait because Charles didnt visit alone but with Germaine of Foix.

Problem is, the most likely thing for Catherine to wear in any portrait as Queen of England is gable hood- headwear unique to England. For her portraits to not be noticed, they would either have to be overpainted/altered, misidentified, misdated or even all three.

Another option is that upon meeting Charles that she wore spanish fashion. If she got painted in that, she wouldnt be that likely to be recognized.

Or maybe we need to broaden our idea of what Catherine wore.

So my dears, the hunt is still on.

Bir kez daha meşhur “Chebol ailesi” hikayesi kaleme alınmış. Nam Shin (Seo Kang-Joon) bilim insanı ebeveynlere sahip bir çocukken, babası şüpheli bir şekilde ölünce kötü adam rolüne yakışan bir isimle dedesi Nam Gun-Ho( Park Young-Gyu)  tarafından tutsak edilir. Anne ise aileden aforoz edilmek sureti ile uzaklaştırılır. Çocuk varis olarak annesinden uzakta büyür. Annesini araması durumunda ise anneyi öldürmek ile tehdit ederler. Böyle gereksiz bir gidişat söz konusu. Anlam veremediğim nokta burada ölen baba başkanın öz oğlu. Oğluma ne oldu diye sormaması çok garipti.

Oh Ro-Ra (Kim Sung-Ryoung) yani annemiz aslında çok zeki ve başarılı bir bilim insanı. Bütün bunlar yaşanmadan önce insan görünümlü robotlar üzerinde çalışıyor. Hatta oğlunu modelleyerek bir prototipe ürünün sunumunu gerçekleştiriyor. Kocası öldürülüp, oğlu elinden alınca bir miktar kafayı kırıp kayıplara karışmış. 20 yıl kadar sonra ( tam net hatırlamıyorum geçen yılı ), küçük çocuk büyüyor. Tam olarak alternatifi olmayan şımarık, vurdum duymaz, kendini beğenmiş, küstah Chebol varisine dönüşüyor. Anne ise kendini yurtdışında küçük bir kasabaya kapatmış, şato gibi bir evde 20 yıl boyunca modellediği robotu oğlunun büyümesine paralel değiştirerek robot ile yaşıyor.

Erkeğimiz bu çirkin karakterinin arkasında aslında öyle değilmiş demeyi istesem de dümdüz öyle bir karakter. Ama gizli saklı bir şekilde annesini aramayı hiç bırakmamış. Bir iş ziyareti görünümlü kaçamağında, 20 yıldır onu takip eden korumaları atlatıp anasının izinden gider. Tam onu bulacakken kendisini görünce yolun ortasında mal gibi şoka girer, araba çarpar. Çünkü kadının robot oğlu, özgür ve normal insan gibi yaşamaktadır. Tam o sırada anasını bulmaya giden adamı anası bulur. Bunu böyle geri gönderemeyiz, yerine robotu gönderelim, bizde iyileşirken kazanın sorumlusunu bulalım diye dâhine bir fikir atarlar ortaya.

Ve şirket hayatı… Robot analitik bir varlık olduğu için şirkette tabi ki doğal olarak alır yürür. Gerçek sümüklü Nam Shin’in yapamadığı ne varsa şirket içinde gerçekleştirir. Bu konunun yanı sıra, bir de koruma olarak orada işe başlayan bir hanım kızımızın hikayesini izliyoruz. Kang So-Bong ( Gong Seung-Yeon) gerçek Nam Shin ile davalık olmuşken, yerine gelen robot ile en iyi arkadaş olurlar. Dizinin bir diğer mevzusu da yapay zeka ile insan aşık olabilir mi, yapay zekanın sınırı var mı gibi konular etrafında dönüyor.

Sanırım dizinin en güzel yanı Kang So-Bong karakterinin babasıydı. Bana, Kang Jae-Sik karakteri ile tanıdığımız sevdiğimiz bir yüz olan Kim Won-Hae’u görmek bile kafi geldi. Bunun dışında dizinin birazcık pembe dizi havası vardı. Oyunculuklar abartılı, senaryo yer yer saçmaydı. Işık ve ses kullanımları da bunu destekler nitelikteydi. İzlenemeyecek kadar başarısız bulmadım ama hatırda kalıcılığı çok yoktu. Farklı bir konuydu.

1. What fic of yours would you recommend to someone who had never read any of your work? (In other words, what do you think is the best introduction to your fics?)

hmm, maybe oddly for a more convenient truth? which i know is odd because there’s only like two or three people who still care enough about i am the night (2019) to write for it, but i feel like it’s because of that quietness that compelled me to write something that felt most true to myself? in that this fic is very quiet and really more of this reflection on the kinds of ways that a person touches your life, and you’re not ever going to be the same, and maybe you don’t really know what to call that relationship, but you know that you miss them anyways–and i kind of hope that sort of emphasis on relationships/stuff that’s unspoken kinda is a pattern in a lot of my other stories!

17. What highly specific AU do you want to read or write even though you might be the only person to appreciate it?

. . . so right now, i'm writing a princess diaries 2 au of some sorts but make it jwds . . . so for some reason, joo won really is a literal prince in the 21st century, and he's supposed to get married in order to become king, and he's getting annoyed about it, and then he learns if he doesn't get married, then the throne might pass onto a different family . . .

but i will say. i'm mostly looking forward to the scene where joo won smacks dong sik's chest and goes "i loathe you", and dong sik goes "well, i loathe you", and joo won goes "I LOATHED YOU FIRST' right before The Big Damn Kiss happens, because anne hathaway and chris pine were soo legendary for that

also. something something joo won yelling "you can't just go around kissing people, particularly engaged people!" while dong sik follows him around a fountain definitely makes me giggle kick my feet etc etc etc

hm . . .. a random thought i have right now is that i want to write at least 20 star trek fics, if only because well, (a) i do love star trek, but also (b) i think part of the motivation is driven by the fact that i currently. have 19 mcu related fics and you have no idea how annoyed i get when i realize that the mcu is still on my ao3 page because as much as i appreciate 18/19 year old me for liking the mcu, that franchise now has such a bad taste in my mouth that i need to wash it out wash it out wash it out or whatever macbeth said
