the scene in west side story where the jets try to gang rape anita is so hard to watch for multiple reasons.

1) its so real. like women go through that for real. and anita screaming and trying to defend herself is so real. it just hurts, as a woman, to watch that and watch them make fun of her and rip her dress and everything.

2) the jets literally rip her dress and force her to the ground and they're like laughing and excited meanwhile one of their own- their leader- just died. in the place of a woman who hates them buy is sheltering them from the cops out of respect for tony and riff. like the jets just seem so evil in that scene. it makes my skin crawl.

3) grazie. i could write a full essay on grazie on that scene. but like. fuck she makes it so much more emotional. the jets men are taunting her and making fun of anita and grazie just wants her to leave them to grieve. she just tells her to leave. and then the men start taunting anita and grazie literally grabs balkan and forces him away from anita. she tells them to let her go, to leave her alone, to stop it. and then they all start making anita dance with them and they pull off her shawl and grazie starts yelling. she fights with them to the point that the men pick her up and have to force her out. and even then she tries to grab onto anita and stay with her and pull her away from the jets. because she's a woman and gets it and gets the fear. because she like does not care about the whole racist feud, she cares about the sisterhood and making sure other women are safe. and then they lock her out and she screams and cries and pounds on the door and begs them to not hurt anita. she stays there, doesn't run or hide so she doesn't have to watch. she stays and screams at them. and waits, even when valentina saves anita. she stands out there, waits for anita. only after anita is out and already heading home does grazie move. and even then she stands on the steps and watches anita's back. i wish they'd shown grazie try and like check on anita once she finally escapes the store. grazie is just the best example of women protecting women.

like the scene just hurts to watch. all of it. like it actually hurts. but anita and grazie grabbing each other's wrists to hold on to each other and anita screaming at grazie to help her will always be the saddest and most painful part for me.

ok, here are my “origins of bernardo, anita, and maría” headcanons:

Before we start, there is some canon information about their past, some in the script and some actually said in the movie:

María and Bernardo’s mother is implied to be dead. They have a father (who María’s taken care of since she was 6) who might be alive but it isn’t specified.

María and Bernardo are both 18. Anita is 21.

Bernardo has been in New York longer than María.

Bernardo’s been asking Anita to marry him for 5 years. At the same time,  María and their dad were on their own for 5 years.

OK HERE ARE MY HEADCANONS:

Bernardo and María are twins, but Bernardo is older by two minutes. In typical twin fashion, he’s always held this over her head.

Their mother died when they were six years old, so it fell on María to take care of their father. Bernardo spent 7 years trying to provide for them, but left for PR when he was 13 by himself.

He spent a lot time in shelters or on the streets, doing random jobs before finding a talent in boxing. He eventually made enough money to rent an apartment on his own, but it wasn’t much.

There was a growing Latin population when he first made it to NY, and Bernardo met Anita, who also came on her own and was working as a seamstress. He quickly grew a crush on her, but she just saw him as some little kid so she rejected him.

Once Bernardo got an apartment at 16, he became Anita’s neighbor, so it was near impossible to avoid him. But at this time, he really grew up. Sure, he was always mature for his age because he had to grow up so fast, but there was some new change in him. (Nowadays this would probably be very innapropriate, but I’m sure it was different back then)

Anita came to one of his matches and he won against some guy who was much more experienced then him. She was somewhat impressed and asked him out.

“It’s usually the man’s job to do that.” “You’re barely a man, Bernardo.”

They both became truly smitten. Bernardo didn’t see Anita as some pretty older girl anymore, but a real person. After a few months of dating, they realized it would be cheaper if they had roommates, so Bernardo moved into Anita’s place.

As María got older she started craving independence, but it would've been impossible to bring her father along because he was in poor health. Unfortunately he got too sick and passed away. His dying wish was for María to leave and make a life of her own.

The day María turned 18 she left on a boat and made it to New York.

you know, being a Riffnita shipper has really put into perspective for me just how lucky those of us with canon ships are. even us reylos get to have endless gifs of their kiss in the third sw film (which shall remain nameless in this house, lest i get sick🤢). but like other folks in the wss fandom who ship Riff x Graziella or Anita x Bernardo get loads of bts photos and footage, let alone content from the actual film. y’all get to have all that, and I’m really happy for you guys, truly! I’m still happy and proud to be a Reylo in spite of all that’s happened because AT LEAST my ship is CANON after all. but with Riff x Anita, a pretty (surprisingly, imo) niche ship with barely two minutes of screen time plus a couple genuinely wonderful instances of Mike and Ariana being cute together at the BAFTAs (shoulder smooch anyone?!?), me and the four (4) other people I know who also ship them (one of whom, as far as I know, isn’t even on Tumblr) really have to create most of our own content, editing together random scenes of the two characters and pretending that they’re looking at each other from across a room or dancing together in the school gym, and for the most part it’s what we put into our fics and Spotify playlists that does most of the creative heavy lifting. Honestly, if I ever find someone who can make halfway decent fan art of those two on this godforsaken hellsite I will cry actual tears of joy!!

Anyways, all this is to say that, those of us who get to have ships with substantial content to work with, PLUS ample individuals in the fandom with creativity to spare, should cherish and celebrate them, because they’re doing god’s work.
