New collaboration with Loft & Amnibus was announced for Digimon Adventure!

Details about exact merch will follow soon, but the tweet states that the concept was decided by keeping the idea of 25th Anniversary in focus but the art itself is flower + wedding outfit themed. The collab will start in June which is considered a good month for brides in Japan and so we see many wedding themed anime illustrations get released during this time every year.

Now it is time for another certified Ayushi breakdown 🫡

Taichi and Agumon are seen holding Edelweiss, with a pattern of the flower drawn beautifully on Taichi's shirt as well. Edelweiss in Japanese Language of Flowers (Hanakotoba) is meant to symbolise 'cherished memories/大切な思い出' and 'courage/勇気', while in Western Language of Flowers it's meant to symbolise 'noble courage' and 'daring' - both of which are apt for our best leader 🧡

Yamato and Gabumon are seen holding Alstroemeria (Lily of the Incas, Peruvian Lily), and while the flower motif is not drawn onto his clothes, Yamato's coat's breast pocket is decorated with the flower as well. In Hanakotoba, Alstroemeria is meant to symbolise 'persistence/持続' or 'longing for the future/未来への憧れ', while in Western Language of Flowers it's meant to symbolise 'friendship' and 'devotion'. All meanings are apt for him imo, but especially persistence and longing for the future are very representative of his arc from the first series till Kizuna.

Sora and Piyomon are seen with Pink Carnations, with the neckline of Sora's jumpsuit lined with a bunch of the flowers. I personally love the visual of Sora in this pink jumpsuit, it plays into her slightly tomboyish yet extremely gentle personality so well! In Hanakotoba carnations symbolise 'innocent and deep love/無垢で深い愛' and pink carnations specifically symbolise 'love of a woman/女性の' 'passionate love/熱愛' and "beautiful gesture/美しいしぐさ'. In Western Language of Flowers carnations symbolise 'fascination' and love'. All meanings are pretty accurate for Sora, but red carnations are used to symbolise Mother's love in Japan so it would've been nice if they threw in a mix of red and pink to hint at her relationship with her mother!

Koushiro and Tentomon are seen holding Violet Sage, which at first glance I thought was Lavender. The flower pattern is also visible on his waistcoat and bowtie, which ties together his outfit very nicely! In Hanakotoba, Sage seems to have many symbolisations, 'respect/尊敬', 'wisdom/知恵', 'good home/良い家庭', and 'family love/家族愛'. But Blue (Violet) Sage specifically signify respect and wisdom. In Western Language of Flowers, Sage symbolises 'esteem', 'wisdom' and 'domestic virtue'. Again, a perfect choice for Koushiro, I personally would prefer to believe that they picked this not because of his crest but because of 'good home' and 'family love' since that part of Koushiro's arc in the first series was probably the most impressionable aspect of his character.

Mimi and Palmon are seen holding baby's breath, with Mimi's dress covered in a pattern of it. Even keeping my bias towards Mimi aside, this is possibly one of the prettiest outfit of hers till date, it genuinely looks like she's about to walk down the aisle as a flower girl for a very happy couple! In Hanakotoba, Baby's Breath or Kasumisou, symbolises 'pure heart/清らかな心', 'innocence/無邪気', 'kindness/親切', and 'happiness/幸福'. In Western Language of Flowers it symbolises 'everlasting love', 'purity of heart', and 'innocence'. All meanings apply to Mimi to the T, but they're also very apt for the whole wedding theme of the merch which makes this particular outfit + flower choice my favourite from the lot.

Jou and Gomamon are seen holding Violets or Sumire. I honestly struggled to figure out the flower for a while, at first glance I thought it was Periwinkle but since that was not mentioned in the Hanakotoba reference anywhere, I searched other people's interpretations and settled with Violets. His tie also has a cute pattern of the flower, and it makes me wonder if Koushiro and Jou went shopping for their outfits together! In Hanakotoba, Sumire symbolise 'modesty/謙虚', 'sincerity/誠実', and 'small happiness/小さな幸せ'. Depending on the colour, the symbolism can change in Hanakotoba, and purple Violets specifically represent 'fidelity' along with 'love'. In Western Language of Flowers it symbolises 'modesty' and 'faithfulness'. This is as Jou as a flower can get lol.

Takeru and Patamon are seen with White Gerberas. Like Yamato, Takeru's outfit doesn't have a pattern of the flower, but the Gerberas themselves are pinned to his suspenders. In Hanakotoba, Gerbera symbolises 'hope/希望' and 'always moving forward/常に前進'. White Gerbera specifically are used to symbolise 'hope' and 'honesty/律儀'. In Western Language of Flowers it is meant to symbolise 'cheerfulness' and 'beauty'. All meanings are accurate for Takeru, no comment needed!

Hikari and Tailmon are seen with Sunflowers. I personally feel that Hikari's outfit is a little too much compared to the rest, just the sunflower belt would've been enough but they added that extra line at the hem and it's kind of an overdose. In Hanakotoba, Sunflowers symbolise 'I gaze only at you/私はあなただけを見つめる', 'adoration/愛慕', and 'worship/崇拝'. In Western Language of Flowers, it symbolises 'adoration' and 'false riches'. I understand that they wanted to go with a bright or perky flower for Hikari but something like a Pink Aster which symbolises patience or Cosmos which symbolises harmony, peace etc. might suit Hikari better given the overall theme of the illustration. The only miss in the otherwise perfectly depicted theme and art!

ohhh i saw ur awnser to that ask and i remembered something. what do you think about esma? im moving to france next year and i was searching for some art colleges there. i went to their website and i found their illustration classes rlly interesting, and i also heard that they are a pretty popular school there, do you know anything about it? thanks in advance (⁠◍⁠•⁠ᴗ⁠•⁠◍⁠)⁠✧⁠*⁠。

i know the school by name but it never came up in my list of college choices

but i looked at the website, i suppose you're talking about the illustration concept art course so here's my take on it !

it's in 4 years (prep year included) and it's certified which is good ! the prices are cheaper than usual so think what you want about this info

it's weird to put illustration and concept art together imo since they're both different things (especially since illustration here is actually narration illustration), so you might learn both things but it will be hard to be specialized in one of them

there's also 2 prep year (design and entertainment) they recommend you do the design one to go in your course but i would go into the entertainment one because it makes more sense ? you should ask them about it !

i also found no old students who took this course so i'm guessing it either new or not what the school is famous for (which seems to be animation/graphic design)

i think you should ask more about this course and compare it to other schools, for me it seems like an ok school !!

well uhhh rip to the CSP folks I guess lol? Figure I’ll throw my two cents out here. Even though some people are claiming V3 will be a perpetual license (which also I do not see anywhere in their article) I’ve never seen a piece of software that starts a subscription model maintain their perpetual licenses. I’ve watched that happen to both the Substance suite (acquired by good old Adobe) and ZBrush (after being acquired by Maxon).

A couple shoutouts: Krita is free and open source, and currently my software of choice. It has oodles of different brushes and features, multiple different brush engines including compatibilty with MyPaint, and although 2D animation is the bane of my existence, it’s more friendly to starting animators IMO than actual animation programs.

Paint Tool SAI still operates under the most forgiving license I have ever seen. There is a version 2 in development that you can download builds for if you have a license, and by and large I find that they are pretty stable / not prone to crashing. While somewhat lacking in features compared to other programs, V2 has some good basics, and the brush engine itself is one of the best I’ve ever seen for color mixing.

If you’re interested in vector art at all, Affinity Designer tends to be what I use for work. The Affinity Suite by Serif is designed to be an alternative to the Adobe triad of Photoshop-Illustrator-InDesign with a perpetual license. Designer is essentially the Illustrator equivalent and I feel the most robust competitor of the three, although all three I would say are more user-friendly than Adobe’s.

Finally, I just want to add that while I know a lot of y’all that follow me are just hobbyists, which is perfectly fine, but if you can afford to throw money at programs like these I encourage you do so. SAI in particular (to my knowledge) is still being developed by just one person, and unfortunately, even software devs are still bound by capitalism as much as the rest of us. Free, donation-driven models are totally viable. I mean god, Blender’s been doing it for 20 years now! But the people behind it are real folks in need of support, and I hope those of y’all looking for a CSP alt will keep that in mind.

i was gonna draw tonight but i dropped my tablet pen and the barrel of the pen broke off and flew somewhere underneath (??) my bed (?) and now i cant find it so I’m just gonna answer asks before bed instead. just some art asks and more mentions of infinity train LOL

What program and brushes do you use when making your art?

@ravki hi! part of this is in my FAQ but i’ll say it again anyways LOL: I use photoshop CC and have used photoshop for pretty much....my whole art career. I’ve dabbled in clip and paint tool sai in the past but photoshop is my true wife, we eloped away from her awful father adobe many years ago and are very happy together.

as for brushes... I should prob put this info in my FAQ too lol,... my default brush set is actually free to download here! Tho I will say I also use steve ahn’s storyboarding brush sometimes and lately i’ve been using shiyoon kim’s brushes A TON. Shiyoon’s cost a couple bucks but they’re super worth it imo

How do you choose colors?

This is kind of a difficult one to describe from scratch but hmm.... I’ll put it this way. Generally when I go into coloring or painting something I already have some colors in mind. Like for a certain piece I know I want a bright green, or a magenta, or a dark blue in certain areas. A lot of the time I know a mood I want. So I’ll start with that core color tone and build around it. I’ll use an example from a recent piece

So you can see here that the first color I accessed was that bright cyan. So I start with that bright cyan and then bring in its “friends” in the form of analogous colors (shown below on the far left)

greens greys etc. THEN I know I want the characters to stand out against all the blue so I start laying down warm contrasting colors for them (middle group). the mat under them is orange, skin tones are warm, ryans flannel is red etc. then to get them to work together I work more cool colors into the shadows and slightly warmer (not too warm because its a cool img overall so in this case, greener LOL) colors into highlights.

hope that makes sense? for me choosing colors is a lot about story and composition. If you know what you want to say, the mood you want to create, where you want to go, the path to get there becomes a lot clearer imo.

Have you ever considered making an art book?

I have! But I don’t think I currently have enough...original illustrations for one LOL? Not that an art book has to be all original work but if I were putting fanart in an art book...at that point I’d just make a fanzine. I’m making more original work lately though so maybe this year....? Who knows. For now, I do have a sketchbook up on gumroad. Hoping to do one of those next year too.

Any tips for keeping background drawings from getting super stiff, especially since things like interiors have a lot of straight lines?

This is a really interesting ask. Really great question that I don’t think gets asked enough - forgive me if I get a bit art school here but I drew up some examples.

First I think we have to investigate the assumption that straight lines make things stiff. That seems true on an instinctual level and certainly proves to be true very often But I don’t think its actually the straight lines themselves but the sort of arrangements and compositions they tend to dictate. Take this for instance.

pretty big difference, right? there’s a couple things that make a composition feel stiff and one of the most significant is lines that are perpendicular and parallel to the frame. it feels locked in and solid, like bricks. but the moment you shift these angles even a little the composition instantly becomes more dynamic because our innate senses of weight, gravity, and directionality can sense movement.

But it’s not just diagonals let’s take this one step further

when lines meet and terminate together those tangents can flatten and lock space so the best way to solve this is with overlap and complete intersection, forms continuing past or behind each other feel more layered and less like a flat mosaic... again, even in the simplest line drawings. So how do we apply this to a background?

ok I drew this really fast so its potentially not the best example but I think the idea is there. This space isn’t even particularly deep, it’s basically a room, a doorway, and a hallway behind it, and we’re not seeing that much of any of those things LOL. but when you draw an environmental object like a doorway in a way that lines up with the perpendicular and parallel lines of the canvas you’re automatically flattening it and making it look rigid.

and when you create tangents with objects and characters you flatten the space around them and make it difficult to tell what is actually in front or behind or if they’re on the same plane.

GOD I HOPE THIS MAKES SENSE. Anyways. avoid those things and you’ll instantly have less stiff bgs no matter what kind of bg you’re depicting.

I wanna mention however that this isn’t to say a stiff bg with flat space doesn’t have its purposes.

sometimes you want to create parallels and tangents. it can make characters feel closed in, trapped, regimented, part of a routine, etc. it’s also great for making a composition look ornamental (especially combined with symmetry).

directors like wes anderson can even use these compositional elements to make images feel uncanny or harrowing! its very versatile. I think the important thing is to just be aware of when you are making something rigid and when that’s the last thing you want to do. conscious choices.

Can you speak Tagalog?

@lemuelzero101 I can! BUT NOT VERY WELL LOL ;;; both my parents are from Visayas! but they met and had me in the states lol so I’m pretty American born and raised. We go back to visit family on occasion but not regularly. My tagalog is mostly absorbed from listening to relatives at parties lol and my parents speak bisaya at home so I’m marginally better at that. Sorry to any filipinos out there hoping I’d be better educated, I’m like a little baby...

I do love meeting and talking to other filipinos online though, I grew up in an area that was relatively diverse but the asian population was small and the filipino population basically non-existent. I was like one of maybe 2 filipino kids in my highschool of 2000.

Apart from infinity train what shows are you watching now? Have you seen jujitsu kaisen?

Man this is gonna sound so boring but I haven’t watched a lot of tv lately. It’s not really part of my daily routine. Let’s see... I was sort of watching Amphibia, Craig of the Creek, and the new Digimon Adventure 2020 but I keep falling off watching those for one reason or another. Also there’s a lot of episodes, it doesn’t feel like something I can just binge and be done with.

The last thing I binged was Succession. I want that show and Euphoria back so bad, when I’m done forcing all my friends to watch Infinity Train im cancelling my HBO subscription until Succession and Euphoria return so they know exactly what I’m on their list for LOL.

I have not watched jujitsu kaisen but I’ve kept up with some of the sakuga news (I keep up with anime industry news and production info like x5 the amt i keep up with actual anime) for it and their compositing/editing looks dope. I’ve read the manga actually LOL or at least part of the beginning. I wasn’t super keen on the whole finger eating thing. Also to be honest I kinda feel like its the new Bleach and I never particularly cared about Bleach. Characters look nice enough tho. I wholeheartedly support jjk fans.

ahh baccano, one of my old faves. I will answer as anime/light novel

My rating (1-10) anime: 7/10 - super fun and the dub and music choices are excellent, but the anime lost a lot of character depth and the dialogue sounds a bit stupid. the action and animation was good for 2007 but the off-model shots in the ova bring it down. light novel: 9/10: I can't rate the novels accurately because I've been in love with it for so many years but I always found the plots, character arcs, writing style, originality, impeccable structure and planning, and illustrations magnificent. I used to do a yearly reread but I lost steam a while ago. must say the portrayal of samsa was awful in both versions and in general narita has no idea what he's talking about when he tries to address antiblack racism in america. besides that, his treatmenf of racism in the novels overall feels very shallow and awkwardly done to me. but I do love his enthusiasm for mob movies and stuff, it really shines through and I always enjoyed his perspective and portrayal of new york. to the extent that I got excited in hs when we visited the city, lol. ah I miss my baccano liveblogging years

My favourite character: chane, claire, jacuzzi, nice, and firo/really hard to choose between all the incredible characters but my favorite character for only her novel appearance is ennis, and my favorite novel-only characters are probably rail (nonbinary traumatized scarred arsonist rly hit me) and nile (heart eyes)

My least favourite character: poet is rly annoying :/ christopher without fail is deeply hateful but only in his first appearance? after his first book he's fine. also I do not like novel firo lmao he's a better character with a lot more depth but he's a homophobic misogynist and he pisses me off. tim is boring. also renee fuck her. anime ladd is even worse than novel ladd and that's saying something

The character I think I’d be friends with: everyone would be friends with isaac and miria :) otherwise...hard to say. I'll go with nile because he's very straighforward and sincere like I hope to be and also he's very hot. oh and niki :( niki my girl. and chane and ennis too!

The character I think I won’t hit off with: FIRO. actually most of them tbh everyone is off the walls ad I would be afraid for my life

My favourite episode/scene: RAIL TRACER REVEAL/*googles novel titles* Grand Punk Railroad obvs, The Slash, Crack Flag is slightly messy but struturally brilliant, uhh for scenes I don't remember too many specifically but anything with claire and chane just makes me melt even tho they are slightly problematic. end of grand punk railroad with jacuzzi too! the anime got some of the greatest scenes from the novels in imo

Whose clothing style I like best: anyone in the 1930s arc plus monica. I LOVE 1930s style especially with the caps I think they're so neat. nothing in the 2000s I really disliked that arc. it contains every trope I hate for married couples and for romantic plots. even though I think it was rly well done and I love illness and the Reveal is Very Good

Times I watched it (and if I would again): 5 or 6 times?/ at least 5. idk if I'd watch the show again I kind of have it memorized and I like the novel plot more. I will definitely read the novels again we're just waiting on those last two books.

for anyone reading, I want to note that the baccano anime is extremely gory and contains depictions of torture, including child torture, fantasy cannibalism, child abuse, and gun/knife violence*

the light novels contain all these, plus fictional cults that abuse children, suicide, references to sexual assault and child sexual assault as backstory, and joking references to incest (thanks, 2002) - this is not comprehensive, it's been a few years. it's an intense series so stay safe if you're interested. I think a lot of the assault and cult topics are used for shock value tbh.

in celebration of the English fan translation of 2.43 reaching the end of the first bunkobon, i present even more of my (unorganized) thoughts about Oda and Aoki...

a thing i really like about book!Oda is that he essentially sees himself as a selfish person, and his relationship with Aoki is more complicated than it seems in the anime. like YuniChika, Oda and Aoki also have problems communicating with each other in a straightforward manner, which is interesting because they appear to function well as a unit in the eyes of their underclassmen

regarding the complications in their relationship, i think 2 pieces of information introduced in Ch 3 of the book illustrates it particularly well: the first is about how Oda became captain (spoiler: he wasn’t originally supposed to!), and the University Consultation Deception shows readers that they are willing to lie or otherwise keep things from each other. Oda regrets that he and Aoki are unable to “punch each other hard and tell each other their true thoughts,” and he is simultaneously grateful for Aoki’s support and jealous of his assets (primarily his height, but also his possession of what seems to be complete self-assuredness to Oda). this is also mixed with a sense of guilt for what he sees as dragging Aoki along with his selfish pursuits, and thinking everything Aoki’s done for him is a debt to be repaid, unable to realize that it’s ultimately Aoki’s choice to support him. (“You don’t have to understand,” which we WILL talk about later.)

the University Consultation Deception in particular highlights that both are hiding things from each other: Aoki doesn’t tell Oda about his goal to get into Kyoto University Law dept, choosing to lie instead (we aren’t explicitly told why Aoki lied, but I think one of the reasons might be because he doesn’t want Oda to let him go early so he could focus on his exams, even if it’s just out of politeness).

Meanwhile Oda, who had already heard the rumor about Aoki’s future plans but pretended he didn’t know, silently admits that he couldn’t bring it up with Aoki, out of fear that Aoki would in fact choose to retire early and prioritize his studies. he’s also afraid that Aoki would realize that Oda is a “boring person” if you strip volleyball away from him (hence “Hey, do you... enjoy being with me?” in Ch 3.3)

Oda also flat out admits to himself that even if a confrontation about the university happens, he wouldn’t be able to let Aoki go without a fuss; he’d find excuses to make Aoki stay on the team for his “self-serving convenience,” although he also concedes that Aoki would prolong his retirement for as long as possible immediately afterwards and feels guilty for being indebted to Aoki (again).

(but still, it was a shock to find out that Aoki is willing to lie to him when asked point blank.)

When Aoki remarked on Yuni and Chika’s situation at the Ball Game Tournament, saying they should just let YuniChika fight and get everything out in the open, Oda immediately thinks that he and Aoki never got the chance to do that:

Although he and Aoki had their disagreements, they always ended up sidestepping the issue instead of getting into a serious quarrel. Even though Aoki would attack others with a sharp tongue as much as he wanted when necessary, but when it came to Oda, he would take a step back. He didn’t have to retract his opinion if there was something he didn’t like about the possibility of Haijima joining the team. I’m not such a tyrant that I won’t respect the opinion of the vice captain.

Oda still wasn’t convinced about how he was chosen as captain in the first place. Whenever Aoki gave him his due because he was the captain, it stimulated a deep sense of inferiority within him.

it turns out that Oda was not recommended for captain by their upperclassmen, and they had wanted Aoki instead, due to his analytical mind and ability to be cool under pressure. they also recommended Oda to switch to playing libero instead of a spiker, because they genuinely think Oda can get more out of the sport in that position. Oda was humiliated by this, which Aoki noticed.

so Aoki suddenly joined the student council and took advantage of school rules surrounding club activities to make sure Oda became the only candidate suitable for captaincy within the team, which meant he cannot be reassigned as a libero as per the school rules. this feeds further into Oda’s insecurities, and he's upset because it feels like only reason he got the position was because Aoki didn’t want it:

What’s with you? Do you pity me, who never grew taller? Or do tall guys have the freedom to do whatever they want? He was furious. However, he was unable to lay bare such ugly emotions in front of Aoki, and in the end it didn’t turn into a serious conflict at the time. The comfortable relationship that they had since they started high school had somehow created a wall instead, and there was an atmosphere where it would be too awkward to share their feelings at this point.

Although Aoki was his best friend and a trustworthy partner who was more easy to get on with than anyone, he also harbored a strangely twisted gloominess towards him.

as for why Aoki did it... while in the epilogue Aoki does think “no, I think you are a pretty unfortunate person,” pity isn’t why he does all this for Oda (if it were only pity, it would have burned out long ago). just as Chika’s volleyball changed Yuni’s world, Oda’s (passion for) volleyball changed Aoki’s. In Aoki’s mind there is nobody more deserving of being captain, but ironically Aoki’s respect and devotion seems to have created the opposite feeling in Oda, who feels indebted the more he does for him.

it’s also really interesting that, although Oda feels guilty receiving Aoki’s help, he also isn’t afraid to ask for it, knowing that Aoki would support him. i feel like Oda’s willingness to rely on Aoki, even though he feels conflicted about it, is pretty refreshing in these kinds of narratives, especially when they technically still haven’t “fought and told each other their true thoughts” directly.

During this ball game tournament, which included preparations, while Oda was just saying he wanted Haijima like a spoiled brat, just how hard was Aoki working, even using his influence, for the sake of the whole team? Even though he supposedly didn’t agree with having Haijima join the team, he considered Oda’s feelings and took action like it was a matter of course. [...]

[...] The prodigy who had student council duties, and who on top of that could get accepted to Kyoto University, probably had any number of things he could do besides volleyball, unlike Oda. He felt a deep sense of guilt that because he invited Aoki that day—because they were “Aoki” and “Oda”, an unexpected intrusion came into Aoki’s life.

“Ah, hey…thanks for everything…”

It was too embarrassing to say it now after two years, and he couldn’t look him in the eyes. He was grateful for the gap between their lines of sight right then. Every time he was helped, it only deepened his own sense of inferiority, and he had never thanked him face-to-face until now.

Good grief, it’s not just my outside, I’m also tiny and worthless on the inside.

“But, sorry…you’re going to have to go along with my selfishness for just a little longer.”

His debt would increase even more in the future. It seemed that Aoki won’t be able to concentrate on his exams for a while yet.

“…That’s just like you.” Aoki mumbled to himself, his head still turned away. [...] “You’re giving me too much credit, I feel guilty now. Playing volleyball with you is what I want to do right now, and I’m not doing it unwillingly. I don’t need to be thanked at all. I’ve been saying this since before, but me not liking Haijima is completely my personal feelings, and I’m the one who’s just being selfish. a few things about that conversation: 1) it feels like Aoki just confessed to Oda... imo the entire conversation is Loaded with Implications™ (particularly his “ulterior motives,” the willingness to throw away his chance to get into the top school in Japan as soon as Oda gives an indication that he wants them to attend the same university, and “you don’t have to understand”)

2) it’s interesting that both Aoki and Oda both remarked that the other wouldn’t be able to understand them in this chapter: while talking to Chika about volleyball, Oda thought that “Aoki wouldn’t understand this much either,”* because ultimately Aoki’s devotion isn’t for the sport. and at the end of the chapter, Aoki essentially acknowledged that Oda wouldn’t understand his motives either, because while Aoki looks at Oda and sees the sun, Oda isn’t able to comprehend that he, with his passion and determination, changed Aoki’s life—and even when Oda feels inferior, Aoki thinks he’s the coolest, strongest super ace *in the published Chinese translation, the line is rendered as “Even Aoki wouldn’t be able to understand. He’d understand that it’s just who I am as a person, but he wouldn’t be able to feel what I feel.”

3) i must stress the fact that, IMMEDIATELY AFTER Oda berated himself for his selfishness, he asks Aoki to go along with his selfishness for a little longer... the man knows what he wants (to play in the Spring Tournament)

okay, let's start with levi (my beloved):

hogwarts house: gryffindor (maybe....?) | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff

ugh, the hp sorting house system is way too reductive. he has qualities of gryffindor, slytherin, and hufflepuff - brave, astute, loyal to a fault, etc. so it's a hard choice. but if i really have to choose, i'd go for gryffindor. i know that his Bad Boy facade shouts slytherin, but while he has larger goals (killing all the titans, then saving the world etc.), he's got no actual ambition for himself. hufflepuff would also be a good option.

daemon (from the his dark materials series): (because i've just decided that's just way more accurate than the hp method) some kind of big feline. maybe a panther - a black panther would be the ideal - aloof, predatory, dangerous, fiercely independent.

best quality: besides his obvious strenghts as a leader and warrior, the way he cares for his comrades-in-arms. it's very hard to gain his trust and respect, but once you have it, it's forever. he's pragmatic and ruthless, yes, but he also has a huge capacity for compassion and friendship. not that he would be effusive about his affections, of course.

worst quality: none, he's absolutely perfect ❤ jklsdfhjk jokes aside, he really struggles to open up (a serious understatement), idt he ever talked about his traumatic past with anyone. i mean, maybe he mentioned it to hange and erwin (erwin knew him when he was still an undergound thug, so...), but... he's not great with feelings. despite his apathetic, intimidating mask, he feels and cares deeply, but he has a long history with losing the people he loves, so he tries to not personally care about his squadmates, which can be both a strenght and a weakness. of course, he spectacularly fails at this.

ship them with: well, it's not a secret that i'm a huge rivamika fan, this ship is almost literally consuming my waking thoughts lmao. imo they're perfectly compatible: very similar personalities (stoic, the strongest warriors, absolutely terrifying on the battlefield but with a soft underbelly), very similar pasts/experiences, so many parallels that it's actually ridiculous, etc. i love how they're both each other's equals and likeness (yes, i took it from jane eyre. no, i don't regret anything lmao). a lot of tropes i love, too: Terrible First Impression (the Pride and Prejudice vibes are so strong with these two, you have no idea), Kindred Spirits/Mirror Images, Veteran/Young Prodigy, The Last of Their Kind, even Height Difference lmao. i could write a whole rivamika manifesto, but this is already too long. (maybe for some other time 👀) i would've loved for their dynamic to be more explored in canon but alas, isayama clearly didn't give a shit about the ackerman legacy, he just used it as a plot shortcut to give them conveniently unique powers, since they never really talked about it 🙄 (and before some troll comes into my askbox shouting "you iNcEsT fReAk!!!!1!!", they're only very distantly related. we know shit about the ackermans but we know for sure that they've got at least several generations between them. biologically their shared DNA is 0%, obviously they don't see each other as family, all the eldians have a dead ass common ancestor from 2000 years ago so they're all basically ⁓related anyway. if you really wanna scream about i.ncest, go watch got/dark/the borgias and shut the fuck up please. or alternatively go outside and touch some grass) sorry for the rant, uh. anyway, i can also see levi/erwin. idk if i'd ever care enough to read a fic about them (i'm usually a huge multishipper, but for some weird reason not when it comes to rivamika? same with braime and kastle tbh), but still, i can see it.

misc. thoughts: besides the stupid teenage fangirl crush i have on him, i'm genuinely fascinated by the man himself. he's a huge mess of a contradictions, and yet somehow it works: he's violent and brash and kind of an asshole, but also has a strong moral code and integrity; he's obv very skilled at all the killing/torturing stuff and yet he has a huge respect for life; he's got a potty mouth to say the least, and yet some very aristocratic manners/tastes (the way he sits, his preference for tea and usually refined clothes); he comes from what's supposed to be an illustrous bloodline, he's methodical and very precise, and yet he was born and raised in the underground, he's been used to filth and blood and poverty since he was a child, kenny of all people was his father figure, and probably has known no other life than a perennial survival mode existence. he's "humanity's strongest soldier", but while well-built he's also small, the david to the titans' goliah, and probably not what people would assume a born warrior looks like. he's also one of the few characters who stayed true to himself and his original characterization until the end, bless you smol king ❤

mikasa:

hogwarts house: gryffindor | slytherin | ravenclaw | hufflepuff

this is actually easy: mikasa belongs to hufflepuff and no, i won't take criticism (just joking lol). enough with this "hufflepuffs are fluffy puppies/Cinnamon Rolls <3" thing: mikasa values loyalty and duty more than anything else. she's also hardworking... and fierce, strong, lethal. yes, hufflepuff and lethal are not mutually exclusive concepts.

daemon: (finally the better option) a she-wolf, fiercely protective of her pack.

best quality: loyal, brave, incredibly strong (alongside her more fragile qualities). practical and level-headed on the battlefield, at least when eren is not included in the picture.

worst quality: struggles to let go of the past (understandable, considering her trauma). tunnel-vision when it comes to eren, obv. extreme levels of delusions ("if only i spoke openly about my romantic feelings for him - as if i didn't made them abundantly clear in ⁓6 years - he wouldn't kill 80% of humanity :(((" lmao okay. just. okay), but that's more on the writing. she's sadly more static than any other main character throughtout the whole series.

ship them with: see above :) but recently i've also started to be intrigued by mikasa/annie and mikasa/sasha. also, i'm sympathetic to jeankasa fans, though i don't actually care for the ship.

brotp them with: EMA trio, especially armin+mikasa. their friendship is so beautiful and special. also sasha.

needs to stay away from: ...... eren, at least romantically. again, that's more on the writing than anything else, but e.remika unfortunately encompasses many tropes i loathe with all the strength of my old shriveled heart: childhood friends-to lovers where the (male) childhood friend doesn't acknolewdge/is completely indifferent to the other (female) friend's romantic feelings, she hopelessly pines for him for years without anything more than a cold shoulder... until in the last chapter it's revealed that he loved her all along and doesn't "want other men to have her!!! :((" (then why did you have no reaction whatsoever to jean's years-long crush on her while she was jealous of any vaguely female-shaped human being you were friendly to, including hange? are you that dumb, man?); the female character's development and entire arc 100% revolves around the male protagonist - she has no goals, no dreams of her own except staying with him forever and ever; the romance is based on an idealized childhood dream, therefore reaffirming those childish illusions would make the character regress, not actually grow up (and nope, epilogue!jk doesn’t count; that also lacks build-up - i would’ve said the same about rm as well, so it’s not about shipping, guys, it really isn’t - and mikasa needed an inner change; getting married to another man but still praying to eren’s shrine is not substitute to actual development lol). post-time skip she's never really frustrated/angry with him, they never get a confrontation about him becoming a, y'know, mass-murderer of gigantic (pun intended) proportions; she puts him on a pedestal, and never stops idealizing him/never sees him for what he actually is (the narrative framing him as some kind of tragic martyr/saint eren from paradis with zero agency and basically... no clear motivation for the abovementioned mass murder, and not the actual complex tragic anti-hero/villain motivated by revenge and righteous fury he deserved to be, does not help). it lacks a good or even decent build-up - it's basically all tell and not show. now, if they'd actually been childhood friends to enemies to lovers/mutually co-dependent... it could have been interesting. sadly, it's not my cup of tea. of course this is just my personal preference, no hard feelings to the shippers.

misc. thoughts: enormous potential. she's been my fav female character since s1 - and ah, i miss s1!mikasa, when she had actually other stuff to do besides mothering eren. i love that she's the strongest warrior (second only to levi, obv), that her skills are never called into questions despite her gender, i love how she stands up for herself and the people she loves, that she may seem cold and stoic and yet has a such a huge heart, that she's not perfect but also sometimes awe-inspiring. sadly, she never really gets out of eren's shadow; what she lacks is an arc focused on herself. that's why imo getting deeper into the ackerman lore would've helped (also, you cannot make the main female character and the most popular male character descend from the same Unique Bloodline or whatever, and never really make them acknowledge it out loud; as a writer, you just can't lol). my spite is so strong that i'm currently writing a ridiculously pretentious fic that's 70% development for her character, to give her a voice, and 30% ackerthirsting. (yes, that's the fic i'm always vagueblogging about lmao, rip @ my brain). if any other rivamika fan is interested… mind you, it’s in italian tho, and idt i have the skills to translate into english.

misa:

daemon: mmh, maybe some kind of butterfly? beautiful, colorful, and short-lived.

best quality: glorious fashion sense, more inventive and ingenious than fans actually give her credit for.

ship them with: rem, kinda (monster/human ftw!). also weirdly enough mogi, a little bit? she deserves someone who actually respects her… though she’s far from being a perfect angel. she may actually be crazier than light on some aspects. but in this house we stan evil ladies anyway, so i have no problem with that <3

brotp them with: uh, idk, maybe matsuda?

needs to stay away from: obv light. also takada.

misc. thoughts: a tragic victim of sexist writing. she may be… unhinged to say the least, but she didn’t deserve the abuse she got from light (and from the fans). the female characters’ writing in dn is so bad that idk if it’s on purpose, to kinda mirror the reality of women in a patriarchal society (dependent on men, housewives whose life entirely revolves around their husband/boyfriend etc.), or just casual misogyny lol. it’s even more baffling since we don’t know the author’s gender (they may be a man, a woman, nb, anything really). i tend for the latter option tho.

If sasuke and itachi belonged to an academically inclined family in our world, do you think they would be the type to attend oxbridge? I just wanted to know how you see them in an academic setting. What kind of students they would be.. what habits you think they'd have? The kind of departments they'd choose? I had a random hc about them being roommates. But, yeah.. thoughts?

uh sorry I don’t know what oxbridge is, I’m not from an english/american/australian/other english speaking country with that kind of culture and I get it’s something university related but putting it in universal terms, even tho my country is not as small and influential as english speaking ones it would be as if I told you about dams lol

In an academically inclined family: this is a good premise you made, it’s important because I think that first of all it depends on their family’s and specifically their father’s academic choice.

Following their canon dynamics, their father would have a great influence on them, and they would be a traditional family, where the elder would be pushed to follow his father’s footsteps, to take over the family firm/activity for example, to keep the family name and reputation high, and Sasuke too would be pushed in that direction, and he would be proud of it, but he would have good but less stunning results compared to Itachi. This might either bring him to just keep doing what he’s supposed to, or choose something else, as once that his father has lower expectations on him he would lose self esteem but paradoxically gain more freedom. This kind of AUs are a modern kind of non massacre AUs so I don’t see Itachi revolting against his family for whatever reason.

So if Fugaku runs a business, Itachi and Sasuke would study economics, taking some specialization because they’re brilliant; then Itachi would effortlessly be given some cool director role where he would have out-of-the-box ideas that his father would be a little suspicious of, being traditional, but would support, while Sasuke would have a lesser role compared to Itachi but he would also have eclectic ideas and solutions, that Itachi would support, unlike their father.

So if Fugaku has a law firm or a business, Itachi and Sasuke would study law, I can see Itachi as one of those cool lawyers involved in controversial cases, with his manipulative rhetoric and manners going from polite and respectful to cold and talking down-ish (sorry for my bad english explanations here). I can imagine Sasuke putting his personal opinions aside for a job because he did it in canon many times, but I can also see him leaving the firm (in the case ) and becoming a prosecutor, as he has his personal ethics and he believes in justice.

If Fugaku is a successful doctor, or better the head of the hospital, Itachi and Sasuke would study medicine. Itachi would specialize in surgery because ofc, Sasuke would maybe try it too but he would end changing, like doing internal medicine or specialize in some rare stuff because he’s close to underdogs and minorities, included those who can’t find a cure for their illness. Or he’d become a veterinarian, as he loves animals, and he protects those who don’t have a voice.

(also consider animal right activist Sasuke with Team Taka pls)

If Fugaku was a successful scientist, phisics, astronomy, biology, but also archeologist, historian, journalist, literary critic or whatever, Itachi and Sasuke’s behavior would follow the same scheme, Itachi would be pushed to follow his father’s footstep closer, and Sasuke would too but not being as good (but still amazing!) as his older brother he’d be ignored and he might decide to change subject/department/specialization.

If we want to consider this with more freedom of choices for them I think there are two options: that Fugaku/both parents are dead for some reason, or that he/they are in the field of humanities, as usually people in this field are more open minded. So if Fugaku’s profession was in this area, or in social studies area, he would be strict but less imposing, and his sons would have more freedom of choice.

And, about the roommates thing, they are brothers and since in my country the default option is NOT to live in a student residence or a dorm, but to either stay at home or, if the university is somewhere else, rent an apartment or a room, I automatically imagine them staying in their house, with or without parents depending on the context, or even if they’re not dead renting an spartment closer to university or smth, so ofc they would live together, since they’re brothers. I prefer this to being roommates. Privacy is important lol

And they would be good students, being quick learners enough to not even have to stay up all nights to finish studying in time for exams.

Itachi might choose psychology, psychiatry or anything brain related, not because he would want to help people but for academic interest. Sasuke instead might choose something that would make him help people in a more practical way, not like becoming a therapist though, I don’t really see them this way.

Itachi might choose philosophy (idk elsewhere but in my country it’s history and philosophy which would be perfect) and Sasuke literature, or art, or music something, as in official illustrations he’s shown with instruments, which show an artistic sensitivity, that could also be related to art, art history or literature. Or cultural antropology, since he’s open minded, more than anyone else, and he respects others and different cultures and habits.

I was following Sucker Love by ShurikenX where Sasuke studied literature and Itachi art, and he painted too. It’s a cool combination, I never thought about Itachi as an artist because he’s closed off about his feelings and art is self-expression but in a calm and safe context it would be cool that he had art as a channel for his inner states. And Sasuke as a literature student is really cool imo, since he has a deep sensitivity and the kind of independent thinking that goes well with humanities.

Anything can go actually, with the proper context.

Hi! Thank you so much for your words!

I’m a bit unsure if you’re asking for tips on digital art itself or on chara design?

In doubt, I’m going to go with “digital art” in this post, if you meant chara des hit me up with an ask and I’ll happily provide for that :)

*necessary intro*: please consider that my art education ended 10 years ago and never prepared me for more stylized/cartoon styles, so I’m self taught for almost all intents (100% regarding digital art).

Long wall of text under the cut:

First suggestion is to get a good, reliable art program.

Plenty of artists use Paint Tool SAI and Clip Studio Paint (currently using CSP myself and don’t plan to ever abandon it). Neither of them is free but both are less pricey than Adobe bundles and both were created more for illustrating than “photoshopping” purposes. There’s plenty more but those are two I used and can recommend. Many art programs usually offer a 30 days trial so my suggestion would be to try them out and see which is more to your liking and offers the best quality/price wise.

By personal experience, it’s much better to pay and have support than to find a free unofficial version and then get fucked and lose all your works when you update your operating system and discover the bootleg program doesn’t work anymore. Learn from me, don’t risk it.

Next suggestion, get a drawing tablet or a tablet. Nothing too pricey as a beginner, when paired with a good program any decent tablet will do its job. What you really need is pen pressure, everything else is optional. People draw on their iPads with great results but never having tried I can’t give suggestions here, if not to look for artist who do and see how they work (YT surely has tutorials ‘bout it).

With hardware and software out of the way, let’s get down to proper drawing business:

First of all, forget that “but you’re not a real artist if you use references/copy poses” noise: use references, use all the references you want.

If you want to paint a starry sky and don’t know how to rend the effect, maybe the glowing of a nebula? Look up Youtube and Deviantart tutorials, tumblr tutorials, look up on how all the artist you like paint and their tips, all the IRL photos in google.

Something I personally find very helpful are tutorials comparing realistic and stylized styles and showing how to go from one to another, how to simplify shapes etc.

Renaissance artist invented the darkroom/camera oscura to help them drawing perspective and then traced over that shit. If Caravaggio traced to save time, then so can we.

And there’s so many different ways to reach a similar result that maybe your first attempts will look like copycats of that tutorial you saw or that really inspiring artist. It’s fine. But the more attempts and the more you play with your program of choice, brushes you like/find more comfortable, the more you look up different sources and integrate bits of them all in a singular piece, the more your work will be distinct.

Now, onto one of the big elephants in the room: do you know how to correctly sketch a human body from scratch? If yes, amazing! (all my respect).

If not, there’s plenty of solutions without having to learn how to (which is the way I currently work bc drawing is a 100% hobby and I’d rather spend my time elsewhere than in re-learning human anatomy) and working digitally makes these solutions way easier.

After you find a “how to draw anatomy” book or blog or tutorials and safely store it somewhere safe to go back and reference, then you can

1. find stock photos, either from google (be careful not to use copyrighted stuff) or in bundles specifically created for artists to use as bases or references. On Deviantart for example there’s SenshiStock, incredible project with hundreds of photos free to use. The anatomy book/blog here will be useful if you want a certain body shape and your reference doesn’t match with your idea.

2. chose a program like CSP or similar that comes with 3D stock poses which you can then alter as much as you like in size, weight, rotation, light direction, position of every body part down to each finger (in CSP’s case, you can also download plenty more free to use poses, brushes, 3d objects, patterns etc created by the userbase and shared in the library bundled with the program).

3. if your main art program doesn’t come with human poses? no problem at all, get one just for this specific purpose, like Design Doll (both free/pay ver, imo free ver is more than enough), Posemaniacs (free, online, uses flash), MagicPoser (free with option of in-app purchases, it’s an app, good reviews, just tried it a little and seems quite good).

4. less conventional but imo still useful, especially if you want to draw in “anime” style and proportions for Servants designs: go to My figure collections and use figmas.

They’re highly posable plastic figures from the most different jp (and not) characters, each one with a photo gallery and as long as you modify the final piece and -important!- don’t sell it if you base it on a specific user photo? I’d say go for it. Or mix body parts of different figmas, or use the “archetype” products, naked bodies made precisely for drawing bases, there’s options with both more “anime” and more realistic proportion.

I collect them for both owning Fate/other characters without spending a fortune and for drawing references and I find them quite well suited for this purpose. Why on earth despair if I’d ever want to draw Arturia in armor when I can just grab my figma of her, pose it, take a photo and then draw on it? :P

Now, hardware and software check, way to find poses check, what else?

Layers are your best friends. For example, Bradamante? A good 50+ layers, some of them stored in folders so I could just select and deselect them to remove or put on mantle, lance, shield, sword etc. Just... remember to name them to save yourself a lot of time.

And changing a layer’s opacity too, especially to draw the definitive lineart over the first rough sketch or for shading or highlights.

The more I write the more I find things to write about so I’ll call it for now, this post is already a WoT as it is. Hopefully I was of use, but if you need more, ask right away and I’ll do my best! :)

97 anime likes:

the animation, including the like, yk the more detailed stills they pan over in place of action or to punctuate important moments, i love it

the gorgeous backgrounds

most of the colour choices. red eclipse, femto’s blue eyes, casca’s skintone, griffith’s mauve clothes, etc.

how close it is to the manga. like, it’s a solid adaption just by virtue of making very few changes.

so like, most of it really, because i like the manga

special mention to the entire lead up to the eclipse from griffith’s reality break to the sacrifice tho, because i think that was all pretty damn perfect. it’s the most important scene and they did it right.

actually also shout out to casca’s flashback to griffith and the dead kid, gennon, the river scene, all that. another difficult v emotional sequence that they nailed imo.

griffith thinking about how he “loves” guts during the monologue

skipped most of the griffith/charlotte sex scene iirc which i approve of

the glimpse of black swordsman guts in ep 1. it’s not perfect but it’s way better than the ovas starting w/ 15 yr old guts

the opening and closing themes. fucking love both songs ngl

also the opening monologue. never get tired of hearing it

the portrayal of griffith was honestly pretty solid imo. i have very few issues there. and lbr that’s important lol

97 anime dislikes:

not a big fan of griffith or guts’ character designs.

just about everything that isn’t identical to the manga is a change for the worse

turned griffith’s scratch marks into that giant unexplained scar

adding extra scenes where casca is secretly impressed with guts’ skills in battle in an attempt to build up their relationship better, which instead just made casca look unfair for still being a dick to him for 3 years and made guts stupidly gary stu-ish

obviously the straightforwardly romantic portrayal of guts and casca’s relationship

through several seemingly minor changes (eg, skipping guts’ night of self-doubt after he leaves, giving guts’ stay with godo its own half-episode, making guts inviting casca along super romantic rather than the incredibly casual and assholish way he does it in the manga, etc) it makes Guts’ dream seem legitimately noble and worthwhile, with none of the like… implicit critique the manga has. like honestly it completely fucks up what i consider one of the central themes of the story lol

the pre eclipse stuff also fails to sell guts’ sense of regret - through things like playing guts’ theme while judeau is telling guts to leave, not repeating guts’ statement of regret after casca tells him to leave again, the tone remains consistently in favour of guts’ dream. wrong and bad.

like it really reads like the suggested tragedy is that guts doesn’t get the chance to ditch griffith with judeau and take off with casca and the raiders lol

also fucks it up by never directly mentioning guts’ csa trauma

also fucks it up by losing guts’ self-destructive single-minded urge to fight monsters that we saw thru the wyald stuff. i’m not gonna say that losing wyald was a bad decision, but they should’ve at least moved erika suggesting that guts just wants to fight zodd again to the fucking waterfall scene in question, which they portrayed completely sans zodd discussion, completely sans implication of the self-destructiveness of guts’ dream

like in the manga he nearly gets killed by the falling logs and just laughs it off like a dumbass while erika is concerned and suggests that guts is driven by something irrational and not actually a ~noble~ dream, ie, wanting to fight zodd again (ie, going deeper, his csa trauma), while in the anime we get a 2nd scene where he successfully slices through the logs as a super basic symbol of growth and a narrative pat on guts’ back that shouldn’t be there!

honestly just fucking everything about the portrayal of guts’ dream lol it just takes it at face value in a way the manga consistently never did and always undermined and critiqued, and it bugs the hell out of me.

guts is just drawn in a way that makes him look angry way too often and he often feels ooc to me bc of it. like he lacks a lot of the warmth he has in the manga imo

showing that griffith is awake when guts says “i’ll stay too” even tho in the manga those words are placed over a panel of him asleep for a reason like, ffs

lots of other random nitpicky details that only i give a fuck about because my opinions and feelings about the story are too strong lol. like not showing griffith’s face when he asks if guts thinks he’s cruel

oh huge one: moving the scene where the torturer rips off griffith’s behelit from about a day after he was imprisoned to right before his rescue. completely trivializes griffith’s torture because it still looks like he’s been in there for a day at most

why on earth did it end where it ended????????????? who’s bright idea was that? the perfect ending is skull knight riding tf out with guts and casca and femto not killing them, but then they also cut out skull knight’s first appearance so idfk man.

oh some downplaying of griffguts, like i can’t complain too much about this because it was still p homoerotic, but things like omitting guts assuming griffith wants to fuck him right before their first duel. boo.

ultimately at the end of the day as much as i do genuinely like the anime, it’s not telling quite the same story the manga was - the story it’s telling is more boring and basic. but because it sticks so close to the manga the good story still shines through? it just means there’s inconsistent tone choices and stuff, like the aforementioned grievances.

it’s like, they kept casca’s diatribe at guts line for line while she’s screaming that griffith needed him and a man can’t live on dreams alone, but they don’t extend that train of thought to guts going off to pursue his dream, while the manga does.

anyway despite that giant list of dislikes i still think the anime is pretty fantastic overall. i just also like, blame it for a lot of wrong fandom takes lol.

movie likes:

character designs! honestly imo everyone looked pretty great.

they played up the homoeroticism and i appreciate that

illustrating griffith being torn between guts and his dream through that lovely moment when he catches guts when he nearly falls off the stairs right before he catches charlotte, and in a more romantically suggestive way

the whole scene where griffith shows up at charlotte’s window thoroughly improved on the manga, so hats off there. loved how completely out of it he was to the point where he barely realized where he was and immediately turned to leave when charlotte was like ‘woah dude wtf,’ love that charlotte was the one to ask him to stay and then physically move his hand back to her tit, love how emphatically griffith was thinking about guts during that sex scene, etc. like it’s still not perfect, but it is a vast improvement.

griffith showing up in person after the hundred man fight was a nice touch

it was cool that they got a lot of the same english vas from the anime dub back, and they all did a gr8 job. like it’s a pretty good dub imo.

i liked that they moved ‘the crystalization of your last tear shed’ to after guts’ post-eclipse breakdown

compared to the anime at least gtsca was more low-key and chill rather than dramatically romantic. still don’t want it there, and still not as… unromantic as the manga, but i’ll take what i can get

the animation during griffith’s transformation into femto, yk that whole sequence, was cool

slan’s english voice was super sexy

ummmmm i feel like they conveyed the whole dreams are stupid theme, and guts’ decision to leave being a mistake, better than the anime? like i got the sense that the ova ppl recognized that was a theme, at least. i’d have to watch them again to really be sure of that tho

GRIFFITH’S. NARRATIVE.

like holy fuck they completely destroyed his character lmao

i cannot believe

no backstory! no tombstone of flame! no ‘do you think i’m cruel?’ THAT WAS THE REASON HE MADE THE SACRIFICE FFS HOW DO YOU SKIP IT????

no dead kid angst, gennon only in vague implication, no self harm - oh no wait we saw self inflicted scratches, they were just completely contextless and meaningless to the point where we could assume charlotte’s nails made them

no torture chamber monologue

no guts monologue in the tavern either for that matter

no rooftop scene

again barely the implication of guts’ childhood trauma, both the sexual abuse and the general parental abuse. one vague flashbacky nightmare doesn’t cut it, it’s the cornerstone of the story

like i get it, it’s a movie trilogy, you have to cut some things, but goddamn, cut out gtsca. trim the hundred man fight. add 20 minutes to the first ova and take the insanely long rape scene out of the third. trim down the whole eclipse sequence. don’t cut out like… the story. like they cut out SO MANY emotionally relevant scenes and kept so many much less relevant scenes, idek.

and like let’s be real here, they turned griffith from an immensely interesting and complex character into a 1 dimensional dude who is torn between a vaguely evil ambition and being in vaguely evil love with guts, just for the sake of streamlining the least interesting aspects of the story

they don’t even try to pretend otherwise lol, look at his fucking hilarious evil smile here

also while i’m looking at it, in general i think they failed at the whole eclipse sequence. looks, lighting, colour, build up of tension… there are a few minor improvements here and there (eg casca’s point of view shot of femto, femto telekinesising guts back a la the black swordsman arc which emphasizes his failure to act when he escapes), but overall it doesn’t work for me at all. like imo the anime has the exact same highs and lows as the manga, but while the ova avoids some lows it never reaches those highs.

they also had griffith overhear guts saying he wants to stay. i really don’t get why this happened twice lol, like… ok his face is kind of shadowed here but he’s still very clearly asleep? this is an important detail, guts’ interrupted words are even on that very panel, so why would you go out of your way to show that he’s awake and listening at that point.

the pacing sucked. 3rd movie was too long, 1st was too short, and they skipped waaaaaay too many significant scenes that should’ve been there as emotional beats

honestly the movies are pretty, they’re nicely fanservicey in ways, they capture some good subtleties and nuances at times, but they’re a husk of the story

oh did i mention the music during the eclipse rape? incredible.

also i am actually generally positive about the movies too despite what it seems like here lmao. i’ve watched them all like, 3 or more times and i find them v enjoyable.

i just have a way easier time listing nitpicky flaws than positives honestly. the flaws stand out to me, the virtues pass me by because i’m just enjoying them and not dwelling on them

and lbr here at the end of the day no adaption will ever really satisfy me unless i somehow find several million dollars lying around and make my own lol. and that would probably be a flop anyway.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS Otome Visual Novels are either a hit or a miss when it comes to it’s story narratives. Just like Collar x Malice, 7’scarlet did one hell of a job foregoing a very intriguing mystery-type plot line while having a few romantic events as an additive to its overarching deep story. Like a really good book or a TV series, it was so hard to brush off the game’s story build-up as it became curiously engaging in each chapter you progress.

With the help of it’s unique visuals and animations, playing 7’scarlet was close to watching your favorite anime series.

ART One of the things I really enjoyed while playing 7’scarlet was seeing its astonishing BG images. It’s just so pretty, it’s like wallpaper material, no kidding! (giggle)

. The game’s artist was non other than, Kurahana Chinatsu an illustrator who’s also famous for her other popular works such as the character designs for Uta no Prince-Sama, Lamento (Beyond the Void), and Togainu no Chi.

Looking at these lovely BG images reminded me of browsing through expensive art catalogs!

SOUNDTRACK AND VOICE ACTING There are two opening themes, “World’s End Syndrome” and “LOVESICK”, you can unlock the latter after finishing a certain route in the game. The BGMs are good too, some are rather simple but very fitting for the game’s setting and story transitions. Heck, I ended up buying the whole 7’scarlet soundtrack in iTunes.

And like any other game, there will always be that one song you’ll end up getting stuck with, even after completing the game. Dat-one-song that gave you so much FEELS. In 7’scarlet, mine would have to be the song “Starry”.

Hino’s story was cute. It had very few spoilers regarding the game’s overarching plot but his route did a good job catering as a story build-up for the oncoming routes you’ll get in to after finishing the first two recommended ones (his and Isora’s). I enjoyed the fact that Hino was physically a jock on the outside but covertly the biggest dork on the inside

(the guy fangirls on ‘kawaii’ things! Awww). His romance ventured more into the friendship-type-love rather than a mature one. His route wasn’t my favorite, but it was definitely a good start, nevertheless.

Just like Hino’s route, Isora’s story offers very few spoilers of the game’s underlying plot but was well written enough to create a very mysterious atmosphere of the town, Okunezato. Isora’s character depth was also deeper than I expected and I wished the writers expounded more on the justification of this character’s actions rather than just throwing it on the spot. Despite this, I love Isora Amari’s story. It had great pacing, enough to give you that creep factor you seek in every mystery-themed visual novel. His romance, on the other hand may or may not suit everyone’s preferences. Although I personally enjoyed it, I can understand how it may not work for some. ┐(︶▽︶)┌

So my first impression with Toa was: “Really?! I have to romance this clumsy nerd, seriously, game?”. Then I started playing his route just to get it over with and oh my goodness! I did not expected the sudden turn of events!

As I’ve probably mentioned repeatedly on my previous reviews… I absolutely love it when a game catches you off guard, and this route takes the cake! I was left speechless. I couldn’t talk more about his story without going into spoiler territory so I’ll leave it at this: Toa was such a great character and he deserves all the love in the world! Best boy (imo), one that’s definitely unforgettable.

If there was one route that got me at the edge of my seat in 7’scarlet ~ it was definitely Sosuke’s. His story had great pacing where it started off very light and warm then surprisingly escalated into a few bemusing affairs. His route also introduced a more definitive and deeper story regarding the mysteries surrounding the town of Okunezato. While the suspense was a little overwhelming in this route, I wanted to commend on how the romance never took a back seat in Sosuke’s story. His relationship with the heroine felt genuinely real and I love both his and Ichiko’s character development. I also loved the fact that Sosuke was such a neat freak and becomes very obsessive-compulsive about something so simple such as a goldfish scooping game! The perfect husbando, if you ask me! (chuckles)

While the suspense was building up in Sosuke’s previous route, Yuzuki’s story on the other hand was a power house of thrill and drama coupled with a few action packed scenes and romantic events… And although it happened so fast, all at the same time, I’ve got to say it was paced really well that it didn’t came out too forced nor too overwhelming with information. I personally love Yuzuki’s character. He’s cold and irritable on the outside but inside his icy personality is one very warm fluffy husbando!

His story was probably the most compelling as far as solving the mysteries of Okunezato goes.

Ichiko Hanamaki (You)

amnesiac heroine (explained in ??? ‘s route)

hates strawberries (explained in ??? ‘s route)

can’t swim (explained in ??? ‘s route)

Despite the the main protagonist’s naivety and recklessness to a point where you’d clearly have to question this heroine’s sense of danger

(laughs), Ichiko Hanamaki had a couple of good points up her sleeve such as her strong will and determination to look for her disappeared older brother in spite of being absolutely clueless on where to begin. Another enjoyable aspect, was how this heroine sometimes gets shamelessly clumsy in declaring her love to the gentleman of her liking. She had a couple of funny moments that got me all “wtf lol” ~ so it was never a dull moment playing her as the MC.

And it gets better… So the story doesn’t really end there. After finishing Hino, Isora, Toa, Sosuke, and Yuzuki’s route. Two more routes unlocks in this game.

Who is the culprit?

Another factor why this game was so entertaining to me was that it reminded me of playing Mafiascum; where each player gets to accuse anybody as the culprit and the accused needs to present alibis to which another player/s confirms it to prove his innocence.

As someone who’s been playing mafiascum online for a long time, the game’s conclusion was somewhat predictable but I’ve got to admit, it was one gripping read and the “True Ending” was painfully heartbreaking.

TRAILER

OVERALL THOUGHTS?

7’scarlet is a very well written mystery themed visual novel. While the story appeared so simple, the events where paced so good that the rise and fall of tension as you unravel the mysteries remained suspenseful enough to keep you wanting for more.

I had a couple of moments where I really couldn’t put down the game for a second just to eat or sleep because I had to know, I NEEED to know what will happen next!

Truth be told, I had never expected I’d get so emotionally attached to this game. It’s really one gripping read. It’s one of those titles that’s hard to get over with even after finishing the game play. I think an overall rating of 4.5/5 is an appropriate mark for 7’scarlet. The rest of the .05 completing the perfect score is just me wishing they could’ve done more with the last secret route as I did felt it to be a little lacking as far as how the story concluded.

I would say the animation and movie clips were an additional plus points. Although without it, the game still excels as one of the most compelling stories an otome game has to offer. Do I recommend this game? YESSSS! If you’re looking for a good mystery-romance themed visual novel with great art, music, animation and one unforgettable story that will rob you of words, 7’scarlet is the perfect choice. All your money’s worth it too.

So, let's talk Citrus. Currently watching this anime series alongside Yuru Camp. In short, Citrus originally began as a manga series written by Saburouta, and premiered earlier in January. The show concerns a young girl named Yuzu Aihara. She is your typical flashy girly girl who'd rather concentrate on boys than her schoolwork. Eventually, Yuzu's mother gets remarried, and they both move to a new neighborhood. Yuzu discovers that the high school she had been transferred to is an overly conservative, with even the use of her cell phone being prohibited. This gets her into conflict with the student council, but especially with its president: Mei. As if that's not enough, Yuzu discovers that Mei is her new "younger sister" by law. The two come off as pretty reluctant of each other, but gradually, Yuzu begins to realize that she was developing feelings for her young sister.

Now, this is a yuri series, and I'm pretty much an unapologetic lover of this genre. However, I do understand if the idea of two stepsisters forming romantic feelings towards each other could be seen as wrong in your eyes, but I really don't have a major problem with it. The opening and ending are also especially good. I always love seeing the illustrated ending credits for the anime. The animation is also beautiful, though what makes some decisions for is whenever Mei has her emotional breakdown and thrashes out at Yuzu. For some reason, her face is always obscured by the shadows. I guess it's to emphasis that the scene is taking a darker turn, but it does come off as unsettling. With that being said, the characters.

So far, I haven't really found myself hating any of the characters. Yuzu for instance is pretty likable. Yeah, she can sometimes go into decisions without really thinking them through, but for the most part, her heart was in the right place. Really, I especially liked when Yuzu takes it upon herself to expose their homeroom teacher of having a relationship with Mei solely for the money. Really, despite the fact that she hardly knew Mei, she chose to save her from getting hurt, even though Mei already knew what the homeroom teacher's intentions were. There's also her rebellious spirit. When she was told to wear clothes fitting to the school's standards, she does call out the utter nonsense of this. Overall, I find her pretty good.

Mei starts off as the cold Student Council President of the school. She's ruthless, beautiful, and smart among other things. For the most part, Mei's a mixed bag for me. I like certain aspects of her character, but ultimately, she just feels awful. I get that she has her issues with her father basically going around the world and how she was depicted as an object, but she just comes off as unlikable. When she first moves in with Yuzu and her mother, she doesn't bother trying to strike up any ounce of a conversation with Yuzu, and in the third episode, she coldly tells her that it was ultimately her choice to return home after her grandfather had an accident and was rendered bedridden. Worse, she has moments where she can get a little...rapey. For one, in the first episode, when Yuzu was being reprimanded for using her phone, Mei proceeds to hug her, and literally gropes her butt in order to retrieve the cell phone. She didn't have to remove the phone in that way, but she did. Or when Yuzu and Mei were bathing together (long story), Mei pins Yuzu against the wall of the bathtub, and forcefully kisses her. When asked why she did that, Mei states that she felt that [Yuzu] wanted to be touched. Or when she showed Yuzu how bad the kiss was between her and the homeroom teacher by pinning her to the bed and kisses her even when Yuzu was clearly squirming underneath her weight. The worst one however, is when Yuzu goes to see Mei after their grandfather decided to keep her at home. Mei gets overly emotional, she thrashes out at Yuzu before pushing her onto the bed, and she then rips Yuzu's shirt (with a button popping off), revealing her bra, and very well could've molested Yuzu here and there if it wasn't for Yuzu insisting that she would always be by her side. Now, while I do have the feeling that the manga explains this in full, based on the anime alone, it comes off as really, really creepy. It honestly would scare off any potential viewers of the anime because of how sudden and violent they would be.

Then there's Harumi Taniguchi, a young girl who befriends Yuzu on her first day to the school. I love this character. She's funny, loves some of the same things Yuzu does, and overall comes off as a good friend who is supportive of her when it comes to issues with the student council and Mei. And her packing items into her cleavage is also hilarious.

As for the other characters, Mei's grandfather comes off as an intolerable, and even expels Yuzu after her stunt regarding that one homeroom teacher. However, after his accident, the grandfather opens up more, being appreciative of Yuzu for alerting the ambulance, and actually gives Mei the choice to do whatever she wants. He comes off as stern, but he does truly love his granddaughter. The mother's fine, not really too interesting. The homeroom teacher I thought would be a major antagonist of the series, but he left due to the events in the second episode. Sort of a wasted potential IMO.

To sum up the show, I am so far really enjoying it, and I would recommend checking it out regardless if yuri is your favorite genre or not. If the incest subtext disturbs you, by all means, skip.
