spider ramble... particularly about false widows

in a Mood™ abt spiders currently, ESPECIALLY false widows. been going back over my arachnid section of the invertebrate module bc i have exams soon and its late and im frustrated abt how false widows get portrayed by the media and percieved by the british public... this is gonna be long and rambly and probably not make much sense and go off in a million and one diff directions sorry i just feel like talking abt spiders. this also came about bc of the big fuckoff house spider that was in my room last night on the top of my door frame but since it was late (like. midnight) and also out of my reach i went eh. ill deal with it in the morning. and then i woke up in the morning and no more spider to deal with! which i should be more stressed about i feel but im so exhausted from the run up to exams and other life stuff that im just like ok cool thats Around somewhere now ig. im guessing it was a female from the size but i cant be sure... anyway without further ado onto the main show.

so here in the uk we arent exactly known for our venomous animals. we have some but they're nothing really that dangerous (to us as humans at least. im not going into venom-prey specificity rn ive had ENOUGH of that recently). we have the european adder (which is also percieved as terrifying bc its a venomous snake but it poses very little risk to us as humans bc they are very shy and i have a lot to say abt adders but thats for another day), wasps, bees, some venomous fish (didnt know this until i found one rockpooling they r pretty neat), even some stinging jellyfish and siphonophores like the portuguese man o war. and then we have the spiders. all species of spider are venomous (minus the uloboridae family, aka the cribellate orb weavers which im not too sure off the top of my head if we have those in the uk... we might have one or two species?? idk but they arent venomous and i think theres another family that has some non venomous spiders BUT THE POINT IM MAKING IS PRETTY MUCH ALL SPIDERS ARE VENOMOUS). there are 650ish spp of spider in the uk and of those VERY FEW are at all medically significant. of these few are the rabbit hutch spider, the cupboard spider, and... the noble false widow. these 3 spiders are all known as false widow spiders. we also occasionally get the meditterreanean false widow, but to my knowledge these only arrive on imports and dont have a population within the uk.

belonging to the genus steatoda, false widows are usually seen as these terrifying death spiders that will kill you just for looking at them when really... they arent actually that dangerous. most cases of bites being severe are either a) a result of an allergy or b) it was actually caused by something other than the bite itself (such as a bacterial infection in the bite, or the "bite" not actually being a bite) or even c) greatly exaggerated by the tabloids (shocker)... like ok we dont have many scary animals in the uk but. we dont need to overexaggerate the ones that really arent as bad as people think! badgers probably pose more of a threat to you than a false widow does. have you seen a badger?! they look so cute but they are VICIOUS those things will FUCK YOU UP and give you TB on top of getting absolutely mauled. a false widow will, at most, just make you feel a bit ill for a couple of days. me personally i would take a falsie over the badger. false widows also only bite in defense! most of the time they bite because you didn't see them and happened to be a very big thing up in their personal space! tbh i would bite too

false widow bites are, to most people, no more harmful than a wasp sting. so its not exactly a fun time but its not exactly the limb destroying death bite that the british media loves to make it out to be. most bites are probably dry bites or have near neglible amounts of venom, so won't cause anything more than a bit of pain. when venom does get involved it gets a bit more complicated bc it depends on how ur body reacts to it. as i said before, most ppl its not much worse than a wasp sting but it can cause things like muscle spasms, sweating, and a raised temperature. it rarely gets worse than that. of course you can be allergic to it which will cause anaphylaxis which is a medical emergency, but this is an exceptional circumstance. most ppl bitten by a false widow will not experience that. the panic over false widows in the uk is a mixture of media-driven mass hysteria and arachnophobia.

anyway in conclusion shoutout brandon collier who did an amazing talk abt false widows during the bhs venom day both at the 2022 and 2023 events both of which i was lucky enough to attend. if i cant go to venom day this year you will see me on the news.

SPIDER FIT CHECK: KAINE PARKER

Woo! Time for round 2 baby! This time looking at Peter parkers edgier brother, Kaine. He has a few less than Ben, but his looks are more....varied.

Clone Saga: 8/10 

Kaine begins his costumed career as a caped vigilante in the clone sage who is very much obsessed with killing other clones. I like the pink ripped up cape and exposed veins crawling around his suit, really sells the whole ‘failed clone’ thing. Also this starts the trend of Kaine having just the nicest hair.

Dark Reign: 7/10

Getting alot of Resident Evil Mr.X vibes from this one.The locks remain flowing and lucious, despite the fact he is in fact a complete garbage man who probably eats rats. Cool coat tho

Tarantula: 8/10

Hell yes freaky monster man Kaine. In the Spider-Island event Kaine was revived from the dead by his dead beat dad as a giant spider monster. This is not the only time that Kaine is going to be a large spider monster

Big Time Suit (Stealth Mode): 9/10

Kaine finally gains his color scheme! After Peter frees him from being a spider-furry Kaine dons the Big Time suit Peter had worn earlier in the run, swapping out its normal green for red. I think it works extremely well.

Scarlet Spider: 12/10

The primarily red suit with the black shoulder coating, taking his brothers name and symbol to honor him, the second Scarlet Spider suit is a banger. i love this costume so much.

The Other: 9/10

Giant Monster Kaine returns! This time he has a bit more fur on him, and is more of a spider centaur? I dig it. Thankfully he can do this on command and isnt stuck like this.

Kaine might have less suits than either of his brothers but hey, quality over quantity.

ruby tailed wasp. it rolls up like a pillbug to protect itself and cannot sting. it lays its eggs in other wasp nests

blue mud dauber. not aggressive, males cannot sting. adults are pollinators, their young eat black widow spiders. It's also blue if you can believe that

pelecinid wasp. cannot sting. this has two population groups - one in the southern us & most of south america that does regular parasitic wasp stuff, and a population in the rest of north america consisting only of females that reproduce asexually.

baeus wasp. this guy is fucking crazy. flightless & preys on spider eggs. and it's small as hell

fairyfly. world's smallest insect. lays eggs in other insects' eggs and only lives a few days.

doddifoenus rex. having trouble finding more information about the species.

chalcura. check out those antennae! preys on ants.

tarantula hawk. even more pretty antennae! one of the largest parasitoid wasps. preys on tarantulas. very docile, but does have one of the most painful recorded stings of all insects - it's beat only by the bullet ant on the schmidt pain index. just don't fuck with it though it's not going to go after you

thread waisted wasp. isnt she cool! one got stuck in my bathroom once.

giant ichneumon wasp. isn't that crazy! unable to sting. preys on one specific other species of wasp (pigeon horntail).

organ pipe mud dauber. described by wikipedia as "exceedingly docile" so you know she knows what's up... and she makes nests out of clay because she's a beautiful little potter. so apparently these guys are haplodiploid, which means that they'll just lay eggs and any unfertilized eggs generate males and fertilized eggs generate females. that's weird.

steel blue cricket hunter. You'll never guess what she hunts.

anyway umm yes. WASPS. theres so many cool wasps out there. Dont let yellow jackets poison wasps for you i promise theyre not all like that ...

random lov headcanons

tomura was (and is) the biggest bug kid. he loves them. after he came to afo he was wary of dogs bc of mon and wasn’t allowed any other pets/friends anyway, so he got fond of the spiders and creepy crawlies he found around the bar. he also likes them because theyre also misunderstood and disliked for no reason.

after he gets out of prison he gets a pet tarantula. shuuichi puts up with her bc he’s a good boyfriend and eventually grows fond. dabi and kurogiri are entirely indifferent but the rest of the league refuse to touch/go near her

when compress and kurogiri started to flirt tomura was extremely protective and suspicious of compress. he enlisted the rest of the league (this was post kamino but pre-kurogiri’s arrest) to secretly investigate compress for anything sketchy. unfortunately none of them including tomura really knew what constituted sketchiness amongst a group of supervillains so after a while they gave up. tomura kept a close eye on compress for a long time tho.

dabi has his real name tattooed onto his inner lip along with his date of birth. he got it done when he was 19 just in case he died on the street before he could reveal anything, in the hopes that maybe an autopsy would be conducted.

all the league donate blood to himiko on the regular, so long as she uses clean needles

himiko usually has a supply of league blood on her, and even if not she usually still has some in her system, and she transforms into them whenever she feels unsafe.

after they get out of prison tomura is finally free to express himself with his body. afo banned body mods bc a.) tomura wasnt supposed to go outside and b.) because that’s going to be his body someday

tomura has his hair cut short whilst he was in prison, but ends up growing it out again afterwards bc it just felt weird

he gets tattoos. i havent decided exactly what but he definitely lets each of the league design a small stick and poke each for him. probably gets a few video game themed ones too, and some flowers in honour of hana and the rest of his family (sans his father).

during his surgery to get new skin grafts dabi loses all his staples and piercings. after he gets out endeavour gives him some money (with the offer of more if dabi is willing to move back home) but instead touya uses it to replace all his old piercings and get new ones

he convinces tomura to go with him. tomura gets a lip ring and a helix piercing.

dabi always wanted a pet (specifically a dog but he wasnt fussy) growing up but was never allowed one. during prison he was approved for a therapy cat, a scraggly black rescue. she spends 90% of her time riding on his shoulders and hates everyone but him.

at some point he also gets a dog as well. i havent decided what breed yet. he spends an ungodly amount of time training it even tho he insists he doesnt care.

dabi, tomura and shuuichi have never been to a hairdresser before and none of them ever plan to. they either cut their own hair (dabi and shuuichi) or just dont cut it at all (tomura)

dabi and kurogiri are amazing cooks. tomura is an ok cook but only cooks and eats the plainest foods imaginable. himiko, shuuichi, magne and jin are all decent cooks, they just don’t have any particular passion for it. compress isnt allowed near the kitchen unsupervised under any circumstances.

after they find out about dabis 3 year coma the league decides that it means that dabi is actually 3 years younger than he says he is, making him 20 when he joined the league. dabi calls bullshit but both tomura and shuuichi insist that they’re actually older and therefore he has to respect them as his elders. 

maybe at some point after he gets out of jail the todoroki sibs jump on this too. touya is Not Pleased.

dabi and atsuhiro often get high and watch the worst/most obscure movies they can find together

all of the league love watching horror movies together and laughing at them.

garaki replaced the piece of jawbone dabi lost with a piece of someone else’s skeleton. he did a reasonably good job but dabi’s jaw is still ever so slightly lopsided.

bc of the burns on his throat sometimes he ends up not being able to talk, sometimes for up to a few days at a time. in the begining he’d just disappear until he got better or else write down what he wanted to say, but his handwriting is shit so in the end he begrudgingly admitted defeat and learnt sign language. the whole league learnt with him.

kurogiri is half ghanaian and dabi is quarter chinese

spinner had a tail when he was born but his parents ended up paying for it to be amputated when he was young. thanks to stress and a poor diet it never grew back, but after he gets out of prison it does (though it’s always a little shorter than it would’ve been had it grown normally)

they also had his retractable claws removed. later on before he joined the league he got new claws fitted, ones made of metal, but they’re non-retractable

spinner requires more protein in his diet than the baseline human. dabi needs a lot of calories bc his quirk burns through them so fast even when he’s not actively using it.

neither of them realise this until they’re being rehabilitated. they still get prison food, but it is catered to their dietary needs and they both have  realisations of oh so THAT’S why i felt so shitty all the time

after getting out of prison tomura starts going by tenko, but he still responds to tomura

touya considers changing his name to something completely new, but eventually decides not to. he does usually dispense with his surname entirely tho

he usually goes by just touya, no last name

if he absolutely has to give a surname (outside of a legal documents where he has to put down todoroki) he usually just picks one from the league. sometimes he’ll put it down as hikiishi touya, sometimes sako touya, etc.

i headcanon alagadda as being mainly insect humanoid mixes !! avian too :-) i really like bugs and tought. why not make mine insect focused.

so far the ones that were decided: black lord (spider/tarantula), white lord (moth), red lord (centipede) yellow lord (wasp, but im thinking of changing to some type of beetle?) and recently i tought of making 049 a crow mixed with crow moth or butterfly details. because crow. (the last artwork i made of him isnt really a finished design,,)

the inhabitants too! bugs are great.

pros- dwarf species so space isnt a problem even as an adult, even a 2" kiddo can just go into an adult enclosure as is. confirmed female available if i cough up the money for her :')

cons- not much info on temperament and anecdotal discussions of them being flighty and kicky

g. pulchra:

pros- oh my god i want one so bad Big Fucking Beautiful Creature That Lives Forever, usually chill but visible, even if i get male i'll have him for several years

cons- GET ENORMOUS (both pro and con tbh), will eventually need a huge enclosure

curly hair:

pros- cute, cheap, easy to care for, usually very docile. my fav tarantula i worked with was a weirdly temperamental curly hair and i have a soft spot for them

cons- none really as far as husbandry, zero brain cells tho and they can be a bit of a pet rock, and i'd like to try a taxa i havent worked with as much

b. emilia

pros: SO PRETTY and don't get huge like some other brachypelmas/tlitocatls, are apparently pretty calm and like to hang out in the open. i've come extremely close to buying one of these twice now in the past 3 years so this def isnt an impulse lmao

cons: EXPENSIVE my god. like technically doable but good lord thats almost a third of my paycheck for a juvenile

I feel like that in itself is a metaphor. something that is shamed by many is still loved by someone. ( not to sound like I'm reading too far into it lol ) I don't like that ppl associate most insects with negative things in symbolism, it feels almost cruel to them. I like your art including insects so much because it always feels like they and the subject of the piece are cared about, acknowledged as a regular living being, and as u said, loved.

the thing is that althaea is never shamed or feels shame though, a big part of althaea's lore is that she doesnt know what shes doing is disliked by some and seen as weird!

althaea and those around her never feel ashamed for loving her and the insects in her art are never about shame, the metaphor has always been about love :] because i often make it sound like althaea is horribly disliked or outcasted when its quite the opposite, due to amaurotine culture people Cant Really shame althaea because shes a high seated person who does a lot of work for the people, so everyone holds their tongue, thus continuing the fact that althaea knows no concept of shame :-------o its sort of hard for me to explain but if i can get some photos i can show you

this one was captioned "Predators quickly become sick after eating the monarch butterfly, which is why many predators go after the eggs or the caterpillars instead" which was about how the Milkweed plant has toxins in it that make birds sick but monarch butterflies can eat, and it shows a monarch caterpillar eating through althaea like a leaf

this was a specific piece about althaea's pregnancy, because she has an ectoptic pregnancy where the fertilized egg groes outside of the uterus. Althaea accepts what may happen with a pregnancy like this, which is often painful and life threatening, but althaea still accepts this --- this is represented by a monarch caterpillar eating at her internally and her gently letting it touch her finger, while her hands are almost in a craddled position like she is holding a child. The caterpillar can become toxic upon metamorphosizing into a butterfly, like how her pregnancy can become dangerous if she continues to let it fertilize, but she still lets it bore its holes in her body because she loves it. this is why i say even in ''negative'' pieces the subject of the bug is still neutral to positive --- this represents something negative, but the piece itself shows althaea still giving the ''bug'' her kindness for its nature

this themis piece was captioned with a chunk from the wikipedia page for Matriphagy --- the act of the children of an animal eating their mothers soon after birth. The drawing itself isnt a representation of matriphagy, but rather the fact that many people are scared of matriphagy naturally occuring in certain animals because they see it as bizarre and frightening, especially from animals they already see as ''creepy/violent'' like tarantulas

the tarantula outline here, representing althaea, hangs over a cradled themis, whos hands and body and clothes are smeared with a substance the same color as the tarantula's body. This was a general illustration to depict how willing Althaea was to give over herself to Themis despite them being entirely unrelated, because Althaea doted on and oversaw themis as a child like a motherly figure. She is someone willing to do anything and sacrifice anything for him, so its represented in how if they were both tarantulas, althaea would willingly give herself over to matriphagy if it meant the survival of those she cares about, themis being one of them.

this ones a personal favorite --- ''flight animals who eat each other'' sounded a lot like ''flight animals who need each other'' in my mind, and hermes (represented by the bird) and althaea (represented by the butterfly) work perfectly as friends --- they are more alike than they are different, and even though birds consume butterflies they are not represented by the food chain, but by the fact they need each other. Althaea needs someone who will truly see her for what she is, and Hermes needs someone who will listen to him for once, so it pairs well that they are represented by opposing animals yet they are the closest to each other :]

so none of these really represent shame, but entirely ignores the pain of being a ''weirdo'' to go straight for how much althaea is loved and loves for who she is, so i would still never consider anything i make with the bug motif have to do with shame because its moreso actively shutting out that concept entirely, going ''we will ignore the outside voices and only look in'' type of deal :] this also gave me a chance to talk about some piece sof art cause i like explaining my thinking behind stuff so thank you LOL

hello! thank you so much.... some more important lore is probably upcoming pretty soon so i wont spoil that ( if anyone even notices the lore anyway idk )

some stuff i probably wont go into much more than whats already in the comic is reds backstory, i think you can kinda pick up the vibe of whats going on with him, but i can go into it here + some stuff abt the world :) some people picked up on it fine, and some people still seem confused about it, but the uv levels output by the sun in triptrack are too high for human survival without protective measures. i dropped out of highschool and i never went to classes before that anyway, i have no idea how science works. the ozones fucked in some way. i usually call it murder sun. you can wear sunscreen but its a bit risky, and extremely expensive. only really rich people can afford it & you still need to protect your eyes & mouth. masks and gloves r more common. half masks are more of a fashion item but remove some risks associated with sunscreen.

red always wore a mask but someone he was working with (nefarious work) ripped it off to try kill him a while back, you can see a hand print on his face 125 i think, some people assumed its his own handprint but it came from that person holding him down. they were friends, so hes a bit distrustful of people now, understandably i think. It damaged his eyes a lot but he could afford to get them fixed a little bit, he only had the money to do that and nothing else, his skins still kind of actively injured, not healed bc hes never been able to afford healthcare. Red doesnt feel negative about how he looks at all, its the least of his concern- hes in excrutiating pain 24/7, he just wants his facial nerves dealt with & doesnt care about anything else- hes considered getting the handprint tattood to match the rest of his face, but he decided its better to save his money for other stuff. stealing tex will get him enough money for fairly permanent pain relief, after that i imagine he'll just get a new mask & put some less ugly clothes on and leave the whole stealing thing behind, he's very tired. triptrack wouldnt have happened if red had free healthcare.

just to like state outright, tex is a robot, some poeple believed him when he said "im not a robot", sorry i didnt even think abt people thinking he was telling the truth, my bad. shae ( if anyone remembers her its been 60 years ) isnt a robot, though. Terry is the younger brother, he shares a lot of code with tex but ms tarantula built his body, whereas she didn't tex's. tex is a lot stupider than terry because of creative differences at the time of tex's creation i guess. he can get smarter but he's been very sheltered his entire life. Terry doesnt really care about being a robot (he doesnt care about much) but tex appreciated red not knowing at least for a little bit. Shae will probably sue mt. co. if anyone. remembers. that. either. I think for my next comic im going to make whole chapters and upload them in chunks like that so people dont have to read it so slowly.

also not very important but glass city used to be an ocean!

you can see a little bit of water at the corners of this panel, and theres whale skeletons scattered around. also they tried to built a dome around it to keep the uv out but it was a disaster, shards of it also just hang out around the city from that.

also theres not very many people want windows, so all the more space for advertisement hell.

I definitely dont think i've gotten triptracks stuff across very well, but also i kind of like how vague it is. triptrack has a l o t of issues, and i want to go back to it when its done and make a like,.. triptrack dx or something lol. but its my first comic so like.... to be expected i guess.. ive learned a lot from it. paperteeth also has so many issues & i didnt really put much i learned from triptrack into it but thats because it was supposed to be a fun little side project! that i didnt have to think about too hard! then it exploded and ate triptrack for breakfast. rip. ( i am grateful though i just. didnt think that would happen, if i did, i would have tried harder lmao) so. yeah!
