Thinking about the Fate-unravelling incantation once again.

Moros spoke of how he was not only the Fates' brother but also their guardian, and that they raised him under their watch. He was privy to their weavings, as the sole emissary to this trio of all-powerful, reclusive deities whose threads bind even the gods.

So, surely, he was there when Nyx met with the Fates to bring Zagreus back to life? We know that quite a lot of Nyx's children are old old—Thanatos has known Megaera much longer than Zagreus has ever been alive, yet he is implied to be one of the younger or at least middle children—so it's not entirely out of the question that Moros is already grown up enough to work with and for the Fates.

Moros knew of the price and consequences of defying the Fates' weavings. Of which their Mother, the Primordial Night herself, refuses to speak about even to this day, whatever terrible things it cost her or involved. She doesn't even allow any discussion about the Fates themselves, either. It was THAT bad and that's all we need to know.

It speaks volumes of how dire the present situation is, and how much Moros wants to assist Melinoë's task—not just help it, but make it possible in the first place (re: her bloodline curse)—that he straight up defies the top brass of the celestial bureaucracy by doing the godly equivalent of a younger sibling who overheard his older siblings had put some leftovers in the fridge to eat later, then went and stole the food for himself when they left the house.

Oh Moros, you've got it bad. At least you don't officially condone Mel's actions. We all know that's how bureaucracy works, right?

🚬 Holding his title far from the grasp of the Gods, Leonidas despised being told what to do, so, when your second youngest, Thanatos, began to hold himself to a standard against Leonidas, you were called in by Hypnos to help out

🚬 Watching as parts of the sky began to fall down and form a humanoid shape was something far new to Leonidas, and because of that he stepped back and readied his weapon to protect himself in case something happened

" There is no need for that King Leonidas I, I am merely here to retrieve my pain in the ass son. " " Pain in the ass? But Mom/Dad, he- " " Enough! I will listen to your side of the story when you take a break in the next few millennia, Thanatos. "

🚬 The King of Sparta watched as you grabbed Thanatos' ear and tugged on it like a parent would when scolding a child for doing something badly, like hitting a kid for example

🚬 Watching a Deity of your stature just treat your son like a human parent would made Leonidas' guard come down slightly, sensing you weren't going to attack him out of nowhere, you had a sense of understanding radiating off you

" Hypnos, please bring your brother back home and also let Aether and Hemera know that he is grounded for the next few months. No using his scythe during that time, only his old training stick. " " What?! "

🚬 Sighing as Hypnos dragged his brother through a portal he summoned, you turned to look back at the human and you smiled nervously, holding your hands out in defense

" I apologize for my son's actions, he sometimes gets in his own head and begins to believe himself to be more powerful than he really is. I think he's spending to much time with the Olympian Brothers... " " It's... alright, I suppose. "

🚬 Smiling gently, you held your hand out for the mortal to shake, making his raise his eyebrows slightly, he was surprised that a Deity of your ranking would actually try touching a human

🚬 Allowing his weapon to lean back up against the building's wall, Leonidas shook your hand, making you mentally sigh, thanking your creators for allowing him to forgive you and shake your hand as a sign of that forgiveness, since every other human just tried disrespecting you for your parenting skills

🚬 Letting go of his hand, you pulled your cloak's hood down and allowed your markings of stars and the moon to shimmer out against the sunlight, making Leonidas mentally swoon; you were quite the looker, how could Zeus fear you and not admire you?

" I hope I see you once again, King Leonidas I of Sparta. " " Just call me Leonidas. And I agree, I hope we meet once again. "

If Melinoe is the ghost goddess/chthonic nymph and has the same hair color as Persephone, and following the Melinoe hymn it's said that "whom revered Persephone bore by the mouth of the Kokytos river", I'm betting money on the fact that she was born just after Zagreus, but since Mel was... you know, phantom-like:

Persephone could not just leave her to be or get back to the Underworld, so I'm theorizing she did the second best thing: leave Melinoe with someone else who was more apt to take care of her, someone like...

since Melinoe was called a, you know:

and she also calls the new big mommy Headmistress, so if I'm theorizing right said headmistress could either be Hecate, Circe, or Medea. Circe is a good option because of her island, which is somewhere the teaser seems to be happening at? Or a garden of some kind, or Olympus garden for all that I know because Chronos got himself free and brought war upon the Olympians, and on that note, I would like to point out that this place can very much be Poseidon's domain:

Why the twins abandoned Draxum

Ok, i promised more Imaginary Friend content, and i am here to deliver!

this is a little more of the plot side of things rather than the shenanigans.

i'll put it under the cut since it's long. again.

Ok, so they sneak out to meet with Mikey and Raph for about three years before Draxum realizes what's going on. (or part of what's going on. He knows they have been sneaking out and the caretaker hasn't been doing his job properly, but he doesn't know they were sneakign out to meet, or even who they were meeting.)

Upon finding this out, the caretaker is fired and Draxum decides that, if they are competent enough to constantly leave the house on their own and come back fine, they are competent enough to be properly trained. This means they no longer have the opportunity to sneak out.

Mikey and Raph try to reach out to them via mind meld, but it's too far for a strong enough connection to communicate, not to mention the twins keep purposefully shutting them out. the twins figure that since they can no longer meet up with them, that It's better to cut themselves off completely now than continuing to long for a time, they believe, is gone.

It's two more years before they meet again, and it's on accident.

When Mayhem stole the emperium, Draxum sent the twins to fetch it, treating it as a test.

They're sent out to fetch the emperium, and, of course, run into Mikey and Raph (and April). It's very much a surprise, especially considering they're standing between them and their mission. They're careful not to hurt their siblings but do get Mayhem away Donnie sending Mikey a quick "do not follow us. it's dangerous" mind meld message before they nope on out through Leo's portal. a portal that both April and the soon-to-be imitation crab man go through before it closes.

They appear right in the middle of the lab so neither of the twins quite realize they have stowaways until it's too late. They recognize April as one of Mikey and Raph's friends and figure it's not a good idea for Draxum to realize she's there, so they hide her in a nearby closet before Draxum can notice, miming for her to stay quiet. once Draxum leaves again, Leo portals her back out of the building (he's aiming for topside but ends up just setting her down on their front porch for Mikey and Raph to find.)

Anyways! Mikey and Raph (and April) show up like canon, and, of course Draxum is seeing stars. It's the other two. He could have a full set once again! but they prove to be difficult to coerce into joining him, so he creates that vine monster to fight them (and test them while they're at it.) He sends Leo and Donnie after them as well, but they linger, choosing halfheartedly fight April rather than their brothers. That is, until Mikey ends up weaponless and the target of an attack that could hurt him.

Then the above happens. Donnie instinctively protects Mikey, which angers Draxum, which causes Leo to portal Donnie behind him so he's away from him, and, then they defect, choosing to get their brothers, April, and Mayhem out of the soon-to-explode lab rather than continue fighting.

but yeah, that's how they get away from Draxum. The power of little brother in peril lol.

(fun fact i'm just coming up with now (but have been thinking about) Draxum was super extra dramatic when he named the twins originally. He named them Thanatos and Somnus. though neither of them really acknowledge those names b/c they so rarely heard them growing up. Literally only Draxum used them. which is why when Mikey asked thier names, they just shrugged. Why is that Draxum beign extra, b/c those are the twin personifications of death and sleep respectively (though Somnus is technically the Roman name. but since Somnus's Greek name is Hypnos, i thought it would be too confusing.) also, according to Greek Mythology, Thanatos and Hypnos are the twin sons of Nyx (goddess of night) and Erebus (god of the dark). The rest of this will be of my own personal experiences with interacting with Thanatos, everyone has their own experiences so yours is likely not going to be the same. I will also include some things I personally associate with him.

As soon as I had reached out to Thanatos through my Tarot he answered almost immediately, however as someone who had only done a reading once and correctly translated Hestia's message to a friend who was confused on what she was trying to say I am not good with any other Tarot spread as the friend had used a custom spread that was similar in layout to a Yes/No spread. The type of spread I use is the Yes/No spread, where you lay out five (5) cards with Major Arcana and even number Minor Arcana being for "yes" and the Suits and odd numbered Minor Arcana being "no". Personally I prefer this as it's easier for me to understand with my silly little Autistic brain.

The first thing I did after connecting with him through Tarot was actually ask him how he was doing, I don't know why I chose to ask him that, but I said "yes is for if you're doing good, and no is for if you aren't" and then placed out my cards. His answer to me was "No" with a hidden message within the cards in order to explain to me that something didn't go well that day and he was upset, to which I replied with an apology for the fact he was feeling upset and then I asked him if he'd like to just hangout and sit with me the rest of the day, his answer was a yes and as soon as he answered I began crying. I'm naturally sensitive to the presences of beings that aren't exactly within our plane of existence; such as ghosts, spirits, demons, and deities, it's just with everything else besides deities I get a shortness of breath but all presences give me that same sort of tingly feeling one might get when they look down from somewhere up high or are in an elevator and it's going up/down.

From that single interaction alone I've learned that Thanatos is a rather kind individual and enjoys interacting with others. I always thought he was more of a reserved and quiet individual as one may think Death to be, and while he is rather quiet he's far from reserved. The best way to explain him is someone who wants to be around others but can easily become a bit anxious if he feels as if he's making the person uncomfortable and depending on his mood he can become rather introverted. If you feel like he's possibly becoming anxious over something the first time interacting with you, especially if you're as sensitive as I am to the presence of other beings, the best thing to do is reassure him that it's alright and he doesn't have to limit his interactions with you. I had told him near the end of the day that from now on he can come and hangout whenever he wants without me getting his attention first, but he instantly became unsure and worried that he'd overwhelm me due to my sensitivity. Thankfully he calmed down after I explained to him that I'm not overwhelmed and explained my sensitivity to him.

I've only seen him twice in some dreams, the first time he had gotten lost in it (as my dreams are chaotic and I can't control them if they choose to shift to something else) after like 10-20 minutes into the dream, but from that first appearance, he chose to appear as a mix of how he really looks like and the design of the character Thanatos from the game Hades. Turns out, after asking him about it the next day, he had chosen to appear that way just to mess with me and to be funny. Second dream I remember nothing about other than the fact he was there looking normal. Third dream he wasn't there but at the end of it he did send some butterflies in order to say hello.

Normally, Thanatos doesn't need to try and reach out to me, he's done so once through a butterfly, a few days after our dog had passed away but that was just to say hi and for no other reason. I had also drawn the Death Tarot, which was reversed but there was no hidden message. He seems content enough to come and sit with me without me knowing or to watch over me, plus most the time I'm the one suddenly getting his attention by talking to him at random and he's fully aware that due to my Autism and ADHD I wont exactly go and grab my Tarot to talk to him and is content with just listening, dealing with me being extremely random, or, something he did yesterday (28th) and yesterday night (27th) was sit directly next to me on my bed and lean in extremely close just to stare at my laptop screen. I'm unsure if he was trying to comfort me after Hecate scared the fuck out of me with a spider because I was paranoid and refused to sleep at all even after coming to an agreement that no more spiders will be sent into my bedroom with Hecate.

Based on that interaction, I feel as if Thanatos can become rather protective over people he's taken a liking to, his presence itself being rather warm, comforting, sometimes it's enough to make me feel like crying because suddenly all my anxieties, everything is just gone and I feel as if I don't have to worry about anything. Sometimes I'm unsure if I'm smelling lavender or some other floral scent, or even chamomile, which sometimes makes me think he's literally gone and gotten into my teas. I believe at times he's also gone and woken up Hypnos some nights just in order to get me to sleep. While writing this, I've felt warmth against my ear, cheek, felt peaceful, I smell a familiar scent that smells floral of some sort, so another thing is that Thanatos also seems to be rather curious once he's gotten used to someone. Although, as I don't find many people talking about their interactions with him, and based on how he told me that no one had ever really offered to let him just hangout whenever he wants with them before, I have a feeling that a lot of this is actually Thanatos feeling as if he is free to just be himself and that he's in a safe place because when I interact with him I don't see him as Death itself or as a literal Greek God/Deity, instead I treat him as if he's just like anyone else, I don't reach out to him for advice or help, I reach out to him because I genuinely enjoy interacting with him and I'm one of those few people who aren't afraid of death or dying, at least, not the concept of dying, as I would never do anything that actually puts me at a risk of death out of fear of being forgotten and also because I want to enjoy life as much as I can before it comes naturally.

I've also had a natural affinity towards death and the concept of an afterlife and Gods of Death, so to me, Death is a friend and is my friend, which I believe is why Thanatos interacts differently with me.

Warnings; my terrible english, grammar mistakes, sleeping issues are mentioned once, Morpheus (NOT the Sandman version.) Is briefly mentioned along with Phobetor (personification of nightmares) and Phantasos (personification of inanimate objects), Nyx, Erebus and Thanatos are also briefly involved.

I know only so much about Greek mythology and google can only give me so many answers, so don't correct me. I'm writing this purely for fun, not to be corrected.

Hypnos as a partner would honestly be interesting.

If you struggle with any sort of sleeping issues. He'll gladly help you. As those type of issues are right up his lane!

So don't try lying to him. If he notices or is informed that you've been skipping out on your usually sleeping schedule. He'll merely chuckled and sent you into a deep slumber. With only the best dream's, thanks to his son Morpheus.

Speaking of Morpheus, he's most likely the first to figure out your relationship with his father. As he's noticed you've been dreaming of him (Hypnos). A lot.

He doesn't worry too much about it. As you don't seem aggressive or have aggressive intentions towards his father. But, as time goes on. He grows curious, and eventually asks Hypnos what the relationship between the two of you is.

Hypnos happily replied, saying that the two of you were together. With this new information, he quickly informs his brothers.

Phobetor doesn't exactly have much to say on your relationship with their father. They aren't upset nor are they too happy. As for Phantasos who also seems a bit more relaxed upon the news with their father and you getting together.

Thanatos is the next to find out, through the talk of mortals. And, he's genuinely happy for his brother. Following that, Nyx and Erebus, are surprisingly the last to find out. Them- being pretty good parents, unlike some. Each showed their satisfaction in their own ways.

Hypnos is said to be located in the underworld, were not a lot of mortals can enter and leave as they please, (with the few exeptions of warrior's like; Heracles, Orpheus, etc) so, with that being said. He often visits you during your dreams.

Or he'll wait until it's night to visit you. As he isn't too fond of the sunlight.

Whenever he does visit you, he'll shape-shift (so other mortals don't notice him). Into a form more comfortable for him. And recognizable enough for you, to know it's him and not some random mortal.

He'll also bring you the best pillows and blankets, made out of the softest cotton and wool. With the occasional poppy tucked inside.

Hypnos loves when you run your hands through the wing(s) located on the side of his head.

Speaking of the wing(s) on his head. The part that connects right above his ears can be very sensitive. So, please be careful not to pull or scratch too hard.

Although. It can be rare, Hypnos does get jealous of the occasional mortal or even other god/goddess trying to court you. And, when he is jealous, he becomes rather scary.

He'll simply puts them into a deep sleep, for at least an eternity or so. With the most horrific nightmare's known to both mortal and god.

And if they're lucky. They might just wake up.

Decaying Godhood- Prologue

Chapter 1 ->

Spoiler warning for P3! Also a content warning for mild violence/gore!

“…I’m sorry, I could’ve done something… both of you, I could have saved you…”

The gentle voice rang through her ears once again. Of course, she knew these words were not meant for her. Though she couldn’t see, she gathered from the sounds of his movements that whoever he was talking to were on either side of her.

This moment seemed different, though. She felt something. Something cold around her neck and wrists.

“This… is all your fault.”

Now she knew his words were directed at her.

“Why is it that you now have skin, hair… while they had their humanity stripped away from them? Now they’re just stone cold husks…”

Then he started to cry.

What was this feeling now, though? She had heard him cry time and time again, feeling nothing. But now this unfamiliar sensation in her chest made her uncomfortable.

It was odd. She knew what he went through, yet she never understood why it caused him to act out the way he was now. After all, living as a human was a farce, right?

She reflected for a moment. That’s right, she had felt this pain before. It wasn’t her pain though, it was his.

January 31st, the date he had put in her mind. The melding of their forms, their minds. That night, she had taken Ryoji Mochizuki’s freedom, turning him against those he loved.

At first, she found it weird. Why would Thanatos willingly leave behind his godhood to live with the humans he was meant to destroy?

She pondered the night some more. She knew what he appeared as, an avatar of herself, an entity far from human. Yet despite the frightening appearance, the group still referred to him as Ryoji, the name of their friend.

She recalled the longing and harmed gaze of the one with blue hair. Minato was his name, right? The girl next to him, Minako, her eyes were less forgiving. Yet she, too, promised Ryoji they would help him.

Static abruptly infiltrated her mind. It was painful, she wasn’t used to thinking, or feeling guilt. Yet for some reason, she felt it was justified. She did cause a lot of pain.

Her eyes began to water. She quickly brought her hand to her eyes to wipe them away, blinking aggressively to cease the crying.

 “Wait…” she gasped.

She could move. She could see too, albeit her surroundings were nothing but a white void… and her son.

Nyx turned around, nearly stumbling. Though her vision was blurry, she could make out two marble statues. She barely recognized them, but knew it was the twins who had sacrificed herself to seal her away.

She followed the chains being held  by the twins, quickly realizing that she was shackled to them. But the chains weren’t always this long, were they? From the sound of Ryoji’s voice, she would have assumed she was right next to the heroes.

Nyx gently pulled on the chains, wincing upon making a sound. She turned her head just in time to see the young man snap his head in her direction. Her vision cleared as he approached her. To say he appeared mad was an understatement.

Nyx attempted to speak, only to be met with a sharp blade to the face.

“You…”

Nyx blinked, slowly putting her hands up, “listen, I-“

“What did you do?”

“I didn’t do anything,” she coughed, “I just… was able to move.”

Ryoji narrowed his eyes, drawing back his sword. “You look different.”

“Do I?”

“I’m going to hope that you looking like a human means you also feel like one.” He folded his arms, “how did you do it, then? Did you steal what humanity they had left?”

“No, Thanatos-“

“It’s Ryoji.” He sighed angrily, “but honestly I don’t even think you have the right to call me that either.”

Ryoji moved next to the statues, placing a hand on Minato’s face.

“I heard everything you’ve said.” Nyx said, keeping her distance. She watched Ryoji place a hand on the hilt of his sword again.

“Good!” He hissed, “you do understand then, right? You ruined so many lives. You killed these two.” He laid his head against Minato. “I should be talking to them, not you.”

“I… agree…”

Ryoji laughed, shaking his head, “maybe you being in this form is the kind of punishment fate had in store for you.”

Nyx remained quiet. In her mind, she was insulted that Ryoji would talk down to her, but she felt guilty for even thinking that way. Her mind became fuzzy again, so she sat down.

“I’m… I’m sorry.”

“Well I don’t forgive you.”

“Understandable…”

What was her problem? She was a god, right? Sure, this Ryoji Mochizuki was one as well, but he should be taking orders from her… right? Nyx shook her head. Why did she suddenly care so much? Why did seeing him so upset and angry at her cause her so much pain? Thanatos had betrayed her once before, yet she simply raised her sword against him. Now she couldn’t even look him in the eyes. 

She stood up, walking towards Minako. She could feel Ryoji’s blade next to her face as she stared up at the lifeless stone face.

“I’m sorry.” Nyx said.

“They’re gone.” Ryoji hissed, his voice cracking. “They’re gone and it’s your fault.”

“Why do you care so much about them?” Nyx blurted before she could stop herself.

Ryoji stood upright, moving closer to her. He drove his sword through her chest without hesitation, narrowly missing where a heart would be. “You wouldn’t get it. I loved them.”

Nyx fell to the ground, gasping.

“I’m supposed to be the god of death, yet I couldn’t stop you from taking the lives of these two.” He laughed sadly, “I don’t care that I’m not supposed to be so involved with humans on a personal level.” He pulled the sword from her chest, “that would’ve killed a human. You’ll heal, you’ll live, and that’s not fair.”

“Ryoji please,” Nyx coughed, holding the open wound, “you don’t have to forgive me, I know I was wrong but can you at least understand… I wasn’t aware of anything then. I only knew my objective.”

“That’s not-“

“An excuse, I know. But you know what it’s like. Mindlessly doing something because it’s the only thing you know. We were simply forces of nature, yet you broke that rule restricting you, you became your own person.” Nyx pulled her knees up, “now that I can feel things too, I think that’s amazing that you were able to achieve that.”

Ryoji rolled his eyes, “I hate you. You made me feel so helpless.”

“I take responsibility for everything I’ve done.”

“That isn’t enough, though! That’s not going to solve anything!”

“But it’s a start?”

Ryoji exhaled loudly. “Start to what? You think you’re going to get out of this?” He turned away, “I promised them that I would never let you out of here. Even if it means I’m trapped here forever too.”

Nyx slowly nodded, looking up at Minako. “Don’t you find it odd though… we’ve been here for a really long time… why haven’t you lost your humanity? And why have I gained mine?”

Ryoji didn’t answer, but she could tell he was thinking.

An uncomfortable silence lingered, only interrupted by Nyx shifting slightly. She leaned her head back against the statue, closing her eyes.

A small droplet splashed on her forehead, causing Nyx to spring up. She clutched her rapidly healing wound. It was no longer bleeding.

“You… shouldn’t stab your mom, Ryoji.”

Nyx stared as Minako’s head moved up to face her. Tears were seeping from the stone.

Ryoji dropped his blade. His mouth was open, but didn’t say anything.

“Your stories are similar…” the stone of Minako’s face began to move as if she were still human. She smiled briefly, “don’t get me wrong, I’m not… pleased with you either…” Minako said weakly, “but… I understand you didn’t know any better. This is a chance to learn now.”

“Minako…” Ryoji softly hugged her, “I’m sorry I should’ve…”

“No. This is what had to be done.” Energy began returning to her voice, “but…”

“It’s a little alarming that we can talk.”

Nyx flicked her eyes to Minato, who was now facing them. Ryoji threw himself into his arms, crying softly.

“I don’t understand…” Nyx said.

“You’re more human,” Minako said, “you’re feeling things.”

“I get that but… why so suddenly? Why am I suddenly like this? Why are these,” she gestured to the chains, “so long all of the sudden? Why are you two…”

Minako frowned, “I’m no god, but… something feels off.”

That’s when it clicked. She was right. Things were not as they should be.

In honor of my pjo/greek mythology hyperfixation trying to drag me back into its clutches by the neck - your thoughts on sbi as demigods? I like to imagine phil as a son of thanatos (bc death) or hermes (bc wings). Techno as a son of eris (often considered the goddess of strife and discord but also bloodshed) or athena (obvious choice with his strategies). Wilbur as son of athena (bc he was the strategist during much of the dsmp era iirc). Now this was hard to figure out but i'd imagine Tommy as a son of hestia (bc he was loyal to a fault at times, and very attached to the people [and things] he loved and considered his family, to the point of betraying others which, i know, is the opposite of loyalty but i feel like it still fits)

I should probably preface this by saying I know absolutely nothing about Percy Jackson and all that, so I'm going 100% based on my knowledge of Greek mythology and not any in-universe lore for that franchise.

I think Hermes is pretty spot on for Phil, also being the god of travel and such. Additionally known as both a trickster AND a protector which feels very fitting for Phil. Thanatos is definitely also a fun choice. I relate Phil a lot to themes of stars and night, so Nyx could also be an interesting option.

For Techno, while a bit of a cliché choice, I think Ares fits as the god of war, courage, and bloodshed (more so in my opinion than Eris because I wouldn't personally relate Techno to her specific connotations of strife or chaos). Alternatively, I'd like to suggest Demeter. Not only does personifying Techno with the goddess of harvest and agriculture slap hard, Demeter is linked to the upholding of sacred law and the cycle of life and death, which feels fitting for Techno's anarchistic tendencies. I'd vibe with Athena or even Artemis too honestly, those are good picks.

Wilbur is the one I'd relate more to Eris, I think. It feels very fitting. Apollo could also be fun, the god of music and poetry and prophecy. Apollo is heavily tied into a bow and arrow, which always feels like a Wilbur thing to me (bonus points if Techno is the child of Artemis then, since Artemis and Apollo are twins). Another good option for Wilbur is Dionysus, god of myth and theatre, but also instability and madness. That's Wilbur to a T.

Then Tommy, I think you're again pretty spot on with Hestia, that's a very Tommy-coded goddess. Nike, goddess of victory, also feels Tommy-coded to me. But as usual my Tommy thoughts are pretty limited, sorry about that.

Do you want to make Hades headcanons

okie i was thinking a bit about Hades in his youth and then Hades much later in life, and i actually thought up some new hc's for him. also i just realised i don't have a hc post for just Hades alone so hee hee this is a good opportunity to talk about him :)

this ended up being a really long post i'm sorry hahahahahaha

Hades is technically the first-born son of Kronos and Rhea, but because Zeus acts like he's the oldest, everyone sort of just accepts it, Hades included.

but i think, sometimes, Hades does have a bit of friction with Zeus. while Poseidon, for example, is more willing to just sit down and do whatever Zeus says, i think Hades might have more critical-thinking skills and he's not so willing to blindly follow Zeus.

and i actually think Zeus loves this aspect of Hades. it's important for Zeus that he can trust his siblings, that the rulers of the other domains are smart and pro-active.

personality wise, i think the idea of Hades as a bit dark and brooding just fits so well with him. i know everybody describes him like that, but it just works!

a lot like my earlier hc's for Hestia and how she's a bit quiet and always mindful of history repeating itself with how Kronos became insane and terrible, i think Hades is also always on the look for these signs in all of his siblings and himself. there's a fear that that madness is hereditary.

i don't think Hades is much of a comedian. he doesn't usually laugh or even chuckle,,, he just smiles a bit. people who have been known to appeal to his sense of humour include Zeus, Thanatos, and, of course, Persephone later on.

anyhow. after being freed from Kronos' stomach, i think that Hades was very guarded and alert. he had natural aptitude as a leader and Zeus knew that.

one myth is that the brothers rolled dice to designate the domains, but i like the idea that the domain chooses the god, not the other way, and so, they never actually cast lots-- it just happened that Hades was meant for the Underworld.

secondly, i think that Zeus wanted someone to keep an eye on the prisons in Tartarus. he needed someone strong, someone smart to watch out for Ouranos (in case he made a comeback), the Titans, and most of all, Kronos.

i like the Orphic version where Nyx keeps Kronos as her oracle, because i think that that is a true punishment for Kronos and it would've been hell for him. but i have a hc that Nyx only agrees to do this so long as Zeus assigns someone to rule in the Underworld and watch over these prisoners. because Nyx isn't a babysitter, and she has no interest in watching Kronos everyday.

Zeus knows that Hestia has a role in guarding the hearth, Demeter needs to be above the earth tending to the harvest, Poseidon doesn't have the brains to watch the Underworld and is also a sea god, and Hera, at this time, doesn't show any indication that she would be willing to perform such an important duty. but when Zeus presents the idea of someone ruling the Underworld to Hades, i think Hades is like, "yeah ok. it needs to be done."

i have a hc that Nyx tests Hades to make sure he's a good fit. to make sure that the Underworld will respond to him and respect him as its King. so she just sorta drops him in the centre and tells him to make it out of there on his own.

now, at this point, the Underworld is untamed. Nyx's kids have stayed only in a small part of the Underworld. but there are terrifying creatures roaming free all throughout.... so it's dangerous. it's not a nice place.

but, like i said, the domain chooses the god. so i think, while Hades is stuck there, he learns to move the Earth to his will, to communicate with the spirits. to control the creatures. and he makes it to the surface, passing Nyx's test, and earns the right to become King. i don't think any other god goes through a test like that because most of the other domains have already been ruled... e.g., the sea by Oceanus and Nereus, the sky by Ouranos, the earth by Gaia... but the Underworld? Tartarus has never been active. it's completely wild and untamed. there's never been a King down there. so for Hades, it's really a fresh start.

i think at first, Hades really only becomes King because he hates Kronos and wants to ensure he'll never escape. but over time, especially as Zeus creates newer versions of mortals with shorter lifespans, and the Underworld's population increases with incoming souls, Hades begins to actually enjoy it. he's always liked the quiet. he loves the little bioluminescent flowers. the sounds of the rivers rushing. and he hears all sorts of stories from the spirits who come his way....... stories from children, from young lovers, the elderly. kings, thieves, heroes, murderers, physicians, pottery makers. it really is quite a pleasant place when you get used to it.

now. we can't talk about Hades w/o talking about Persephone. so i'll leave my hades x persephone hc's here. and, assuming that you've read those, i'll continue by saying that i don't really think that the guilt of kidnapping Persephone ever truly leaves Hades. especially because Demeter is forever resentful of him, and their relationship is sort of damaged in a way that can't truly be fixed. Hades knows this, and i think he never resents Demeter the way she resents him, because she's his sister, and he does love her, and he sympathises with her pain. that's why i think Hades, who usually doesn't care too much about the affairs of Olympus, does keep an eye out for Demeter.

i want to talk about Demeter x Iasion for a second because they're important to my Hades hc.

i like the versions where Iasion isn't a son of Zeus, and i sort of imagine him to be just this unimportant, simple farm boy. not a prince, not a hero, just a guy who milks cows and tends to the crops.

Demeter is a goddess who, canonically, has relationships with Zeus and Poseidon, and neither of these relationships really end all that well. i've never really thought too much about them because they're just too sad and depressing, but i think that Demeter's history of being taken advantage of by the gods of Olympus is the reason for her keeping Persephone away from Olympus, and the reason for her extreme rage when Hades defies her.

i also think this is why Iasion has to be just a simple mortal. someone unconnected to Zeus, a god who has brought Demeter a lot of pain and betrayal, and Olympus in general. curiously, this is the exact reason that Zeus hates Iasion and is jealous of him. because Zeus thinks Demeter is worthy of more; a proper god, maybe a god of his own blood. if Demeter wants a husband, he should be a noble hero, not just Some Guy. anyways. so, as the story goes, Zeus kills Iasion out of jealousy.

now, Hades comes in because he's the god of the Underworld, and Iasion's mortal soul should enter Hades' domain. but i LOVE the idea that, through events i shall not describe here because we're talking about Hades, not Demeter!, somehow or the other, Iasion becomes an Immortal, and Hades realises that Iasion's shade doesn't pass through the Underworld. it comes through temporarily, and then fades, because Iasion been turned into a god by Demeter.

I think Hades knows that Zeus will be even more furious with Iasion because of this, and could try to destroy Iasion in his immortal form, but i have this image in my head of Demeter cradling Iasion's bleeding body, while Hades stands between her and a fuming Zeus, and Hades STANDS UP for Demeter. he defends her, and he tells Zeus to let it go. to allow Iasion to ascend to godhood and be with Demeter. and Zeus complies, begrudgingly.

this is important to me because, as the King of the Underworld, Hades is entitled to his share of subjects. Iasion should remain with Hades. but Hades lets him go anyhow because i think he wants to show Demeter that he does care for her. she's still his sister. and even though Demeter will never forgive Hades, she does appreciate it. she knows what it means.

secondly, i think, while Iasion is recovering from being struck by Zeus' lightning, i think Hades coerces Asclepius into tending to Iasion... ((this is after Hades gets Asclepius killed because he was resurrecting people with his special medical powers))

obviously Asclepius indulges Hades because he's terrified of him, given their history, and i think this too is appreciated by Demeter. Hades uses all of his power to ensure that both Demeter and Iasion are protected from Zeus' wrath... and so Iasion joins Demeter in her fields forevermore, and Zeus just has to deal with it <33

For the people who dont know Hades game:

Zagreus was raised by Thanatos' mother, but they do not treat each other as brothers, in fact even when talking about the past they seem to be more like childhood friends. its fine if you're uncomfortable that they're technically adoptive brothers but they dont seem to see each other as such. Thanatos visibly treats Zagreus different from how he treats Hypnos or Charon, who are referred to as his brothers in the game.

Megaera is not and has never been, from what i can remember, implied to be Nyx's daughter. Feel free to correct me with screenshots if I'm wrong, but I played Hades for a long time and never got any dialogues about that. There are myths that say Nyx is the mother of the Furies, but there are also other origin myths for them, and it's likely the game's lore uses one of the other myths, unless I'm missing something.

There is no actual incest going on. There is an argument to be made about the fact Than and Zag were raised by the same woman, and Zagreus did believe he was her son as well, but again they did not treat each other as brothers. If you played the game and you disagree with me, I'm open to have a discussion about this but I'm not going to put up with accusations from strangers. I don't have time or energy for this.

Also yes, it is a game based on greek mythology and I will use that argument cause that's literally what it is. Things have context. They don't exist in a void for you to apply your personal morals on as if you're the only person with Good Opinions.

Once again, I will no longer engage with passive aggressive strangers throwing accusations at me.

Deity Worship Notes:

Hades and Persephone

Often the two are worshipped together, though some hellenic pagans will worship one or the other. What I've seen in most pagan spaces however is the two being worshipped alongside one another as the two deities in question are bound to each other.

Hades

Hades is god of the underworld not god of death (that's Thanatos, Nyx's son).

Son of Cronos and Rhea, when his brothers (Zues and Posideon) divided the cosmos Hades became king of the underworld. When portrayed he is seen with his faithful three headed dog, Cerberus, who guards the gates to the underworld.

Offerings for Hades

Colors: dark purples, golds, and greens.

Crystals: Jet, Obsidian, Amethyst, Jade

Herbs/plants: White poplar, mint.

Food/drink: Bread, wine, fish, cheese, vegetables, fruits (pomegranate for Persephone), and red wine

Persephone

Goddess Queen of the underworld and of spring, Persephone is the wife of Hades and the daughter of Demeter.

Offerings for Persephone.

Food/Drink: pomegranate, honey, wine, spring water, floral teas.

Colors: purples, greens, golds, pinks.

Herbs/plants: pomegranates, spring time herbs and flowers.

Crystals: peridot, green tourmaline, citrine, gold and turquoise.

My experiences with the two deities:

Back when I had moved out of my parents and in with my (now) ex Persephone was the first to reach out to me. She taught me that new beginnings may be hard but they're also worth it. Being the goddess of spring she told me to nurture new relationship and when it came time to reap what had been sown I would be rewarded. She of course, was talking about the relationship with my parents. Before moving out the relationship was very poor, and after I had moved out the relationship was on the mend. After the relationship was where I wanted it to be She and I went our separate ways.

It was near the end of my relationship with my ex that Hades came to me. As with the death card in tarot, he told me that he didn't represent literal death, instead he represented a change. One that would put me through hell and back but with his guidance I was able to make a brilliant change. While what I experienced in that time is still hard for me to talk about, Hades ensured that it was all worth it.

Hades had recently started to reappear in May of this year (2022), and I knew that it was time for another hard ending but a beautiful rebirth.

Hades and Persephone represent more than just literal death and spring. Together they make the perfect pair in helping someone get through a difficult time in life.

Today I found myself thinking about how different authors try to downplay or erase incest in godly ships in Greek mythology retellings... stuff like, "the gods don't have DNA so it's different for them" or "gods are manifestations of cosmic forces so they only consider themselves related but aren't in a biological sense." One example I think is pretty funny in its execution is the webcomic Lore Olympus.

Now, I admit I've never read it, but from what I understand, the main characters, Hades and Persephone, aren't uncle and niece. Hades is brothers with Zeus and Poseidon, but Persephone was created with magic by Demeter, who was also created with magic alongside Hera and Hestia, her non-biologically-related sisters.

However, Persephone looks A LOT like Hades' mother, Rhea, to the point that people who like the comic sometimes say Hades is getting to "do it all over again" and have a better and healthier version of his parents' marriage (Hades himself looks a lot like his father, who is still Kronos, and yes, he still ate his kids) while people who dislike it (it's pretty divisive, and idly digging into all the drama is actually the one reason I know all this) joke about him just having Oedipus complex.

I think at one point (maybe before Lore Olympus was picked up by Webtoon?) Rhea actually had a much different design, but then the author retconned that to make her more similar to Persephone. And while Rhea is essentially a giantess, being a Titan, and Persephone is usually short and petite, Persephone can ALSO become a giantess, when she unlocks her full power or something like that. I think I've even heard that Hades REALLY likes it when she does that...

Anyway, in the same series, there's also two, or rather three, other examples of "related in myth, unrelated in the comic" that I think are quite unexpected and interesting.

One is Hestia and Athena. As I said above, Hestia isn't related to Zeus, and tbh, I'm not sure if ATHENA even is at this point, but in mythology, they're aunt and niece, being respectively Zeus' sister and his daughter. Here, they run some kind of support organization for young goddesses, where all new members have to take an oath of chastity and swear off relationship for some reason, but they actually have a forbidden secret relationship themselves.

Another, even more surprising one is Kronos and Hera... which leads directly to Hades and Hera right after. From what I understand, during the Titanomachy, Hera pretended to switch sides and ally herself with Kronos, but really, she was a double agent gathering intelligence to help Zeus and the others. To do that, she seduced Kronos, but then, he developed some sort of creepy, obsessive "love" for her. I think Rhea had been killed by Kronos or otherwise died by that point. Anyway, after Zeus freed his brothers and confined Kronos in Tartarus, Hera and Hades bonded over the trauma Kronos had inflicted on them and started a relationship, which I'm pretty sure continued for a time, in some on-and-off way, even after Hera married Zeus to become his queen.

Oh, and here's a fun bonus! Aside from all of this, I've heard of some much rarer, pseudo-incestuous, "unrelated in the myths, related in the comic" type weirdness, too...

You know the myth of Hades' concubine Minthe, whom he set aside after marrying Persephone, but who kept claiming Hades would leave Persephone to come back to her one day, until either Persephone or Demeter turned her into a mint plant for it in a rage? Well, in Lore Olympus, Minthe is Hades' girlfriend at the beginning of the story, but they both have issues and they aren't a good match for each other. Which is possibly why they have an open relationship, with Hades visiting strip clubs and whatnot and Minthe having a side thing with Thanatos, who is the son of Nyx and Erebos in the myths... but here turns out to be Hades' adopted son after Nyx left him in his care as a small child.

I distinctly remember seeing a panel showing that Hades had bought a ring for Minthe, so he must have been planning to propose to her before he met Persephone... which means that Thanatos was having an affair with a woman who could have soon become his own stepmother! Personally, I like to imagine what might have happened had they kept it up even with Minthe becoming Hades' wife... but that's just me, lol. In the comic itself, Hades eventually asks Minthe to have a more committed relationship despite already having feelings for Persephone himself, so she breaks it off with Thanatos, and he then moves on to Daphne, the same one Apollo falls in obsessive love with in the myths... yep, lots of unexpected ships, it seems!

But, imho, this is also interesting because Daphne is ANOTHER character who looks kind of a lot like Persephone. And, as an outsider looking in, it almost seems like a pattern for Thanatos to me... first going for his dad's girlfriend, then for a girl who's very similar to his dad's new girlfriend...

From what I think I understood about Thanatos' own subplot, Hades was a very neglectful and cold father to him because he was afraid that if he'd let himself grow close to him, eventually he'd somehow end up treating him the way Kronos had treated HIM as a child. But as a kid, Thanatos couldn't know what was actually going on in his head, and obviously he was still upset about Nyx abandoning him, so he started acting up, and then their relationship worsened from there. And so, my incest-shipping brain can't help but wonder... what if going for Minthe and then a Persephone lookalike was a subconscious way for Thanatos to try and feel closer to Hades, or maybe finally get his attention, if his affection was just too difficult to obtain...?

I think it's very unlikely I'll ever actually read Lore Olympus, because it seems longer than I usually like when it comes to romantic dramas and I've read some things about the way it handles its plot and characters, as well as certain sensitive themes (some of them showing up in the very same subplots I mentioned here, which would be the most interesting to me), that really put me off. But there's an AU of it more or less living rent-free in my head where Hades was in angsty unrequieted love with Rhea and Thanatos is now in angsty unrequieted love with Hades.

... And Hades/Persephone and Hestia/Athena are uncle/niece and aunt/niece, Kronos/Hera is father/daughter, and Hades/Hera is brosis, naturally. Because why not be as self-indulgent as I can while I'm at it, after all?

All of the incest with none of the incest? That's what this sounds like to me, lol. I do find the erasing of the incestuousness in various adaptations to be amusing. I just ignore it!

Some of these relationships in Lore Olympus sound pretty interesting. But they would be a lot more interesting if they were related!

Hypnos is Thanatos brother and is dating Hermes. Demeter son Dionysus is with Ariadne. My sister Hera is married to Zeus and dating Maia, Leto, and Metis. Letos son Apollo is with Ares. My favorite neice Athena is married to Artemis and Medusa and is with Medusa's sisters Stheno, and Euryale. Stheno, Medusa, and Euryale are with Arachne. My mother Rhea is with Gaia. Hi! Just found out in the Greek mythology, Hypnos had 3 sons?? So I was wondering if you could write hcs of Hypnos being a dad to triplets T.T I think it’d be really cute,, Ty!

Omg yes of course I can! This IS a really cute idea! I did a bit of research of my own on the subject and obviously got a lot of different information on his sons, so I’m gonna do what I do best which is headcanons lolol and take some creative liberties with these cuties.

Hypnos! Parenting headcannons!

Three kids that are all the same age are quite a handful, especially when they are equipped with omnipotent powers

So whenever he is in a bind with the young ones and doesn’t know quite what to do, he turns to the greatest parent he knows. His mom :)

Seriously, Nyx, has so many kids and she has experienced having three young ones at once as well. Practically the same situation. And while she may not have been the best parent to Hypnos he still loves her with all of his heart.

Alright, let’s address the cuties separately starting with, Morpheus, the eldest of the triplets. He has the ability to manipulate the dreams of gods and men. Because his powers are very potent he is the loudest, and the most rambunctious of the triplets.

Hypnos finds his son’s energy a bit hard to deal with when he’s awake, but he has such a kind soul, and gives Hypnos the most pleasant dreams. He just adores how cheery Morpheus is, though, it’s refreshing to have someone else smiling around the house.

Often times Hypnos will pass Morpheus over to Zagreus to watch for some time. Zagreus does not have the ability to sit still for more than a few minutes, and has no trouble keeping up with the eldest of the triplets. In fact, Morpheus returns to Hypnos tuckered out from spending the day/night running around attempting to keep up with the Prince. How ironic.

Overall, Morpheus really loves his father, and Hypnos loves Morpheus in return.

Next is Phobetor, he is a timid yet mischievous kid. He is the personification of nightmares, and he appears in dreams in the forms of animals and other nightmarish beasts.

Phobetor often hides away, he’s not as energetic as his elder sibling, and is more similar to Hypnos in that matter. But Hypnos has to be weary of falling asleep when he is around.

Phobetor is unsettling, and since he’s so quiet he uses those abilities to his advantage by playing little “pranks” on people around the house by giving them a “little” scare.

Dusa, honestly, almost turned him to stone once from how bad he got her. Hypnos had to give a lecture on not messing with the staff after that incident.

Phobetor gets along really well with Uncle Thanatos. Thanatos can also seem pretty scary due to his outward appearance and somber attitude. So most children shy away from him, except Phobetor. Phobetor finds him to be tolerable, unlike the loud prince who is unbearably cheery. So, Phobetor was kind of drawn to his uncle. He’s mesmerized and very curious about his uncle’s line of work, knowing that while it is unintentional he sparks fear into the hearts of the mortals. He likes to listen to Thanatos’ stories of the mortals that he brings in, the way they died and such, it gives him inspiration for his next big “prank”

Last but definitely not least is Phantasos. Phantasos is the god of surreal dreams, he appears as inanimate objects in prophetic dreams.

Phantasos is calm, and wise for his age. He’s pretty cryptic as well though. Hypnos finds it hard to understand his youngest son all the time, but with some help from his mother they are usually able to figure out what it is he’s trying to say.

Phantasos is nearly always talking with his grandmother Nyx, he’s enthralled with his three aunts, the fates, and uses Nyx as a sort of bridge of communication between them. Nyx often has messages for the youngest triplet from the fates themselves. They give him glimpses of things yet to come, so that he may tell humanity through the means of the dream world.

Hypnos is a pretty good dad, much to everyone’s surprise, for the most part his kids are polite, friendly, and are mindful of their responsibilities to the house. And while Hypnos isn’t the best parent around, he has people to help him get back on track when he falters. 7/10 parenting :D
