hi dandy ! a ship question : what pkmn does juno have ? have guzma and juno ever traded / gifted pkmn to each other ? what does guzma's pkmn think abt juno, and vice versa? dont feel pressured to answer all of these if u dont want to , just a bunch of questions out of interest ^^ - @dmclr
AWAUUHH HI CLARA !! thank u so much for the questions omg :O !!
i gotta put it under a cut because OUGH AUGH THE RAMBLER'S CURSE GOT ME,,, IT'S SO LONG IM SO SORRY OH MY GOD HELP FSDJKL
my s/i's main team is piplup (Henry), houndoom (Greer), psyduck (Huey), greavard (Grimsby), and a still unnamed chatot and banette (im slooowly playing through platinum so i'm waiting til i catch them in-game to decide on names), buuuut i might swap someone out of there because I've grown to really love my mareep named Mung Bean in pkmn sleep !! :3
I'VE NEVER RLY THOUGHT ABT THE SECOND QUESTION OMG.... guz would absolutely gift juno a wimpod at some point though,, I like to think they go hunt for wimpods sometimes as a shared interest activity :D guzma would also definitely gift juno a cutiefly early on maybe before they start dating because... how could he not HFSDJKL, he is fluent in bug-types and would want to flirt through bug-types hehe :3 also somewhat related, once he finds out about juno's interest in cataloguing the differences in plants in the different regions, he'd probably look into the alolan variants of pkmn (like vulpix and meowth and rattata etc) and then try to impress juno w his (newly acquired) knowledge JFSJKL
juno would absolutely eagerly help him fill out his bug collection with some sinnoh bug-types that alola doesn't have !! (i need to make a list of bug-types that each region has tbh...) they'd gift him some they had in their storage box, and then help him catch any others when they go to sinnoh together :D
ooh okay i have thought abt this third question a bit fdsjkl it's so fun thinking abt the different personalities of their pkmn :3
golisopod puts on a tough act for like. a day at most. and then immediately crumbles and is actually just a big ol' softie so he warms up to juno pretty much immediately fdsjkl. ariados doesn't like juno very much just because juno's a little afraid of him dsgjkl but eventually the two of them come to some sort of mutual understanding where they get along in a vaguely strained manner (guzma never rly understands why the two of them don't get along well and tries to facilitate some bonding moments that go disastrously sideways somehow every time LMAO). scizor is kind of stand-offish and unsure about juno but once juno hangs around for a while and he sees more of them, then he accepts them as one of the squad! pinsir is a little mean (he's just mischievous tbh) and likes messing with juno but they eventually catch onto his pranks and antics, and turns it back on him one day and that earns his respect LMAO. masquerain is just happy that there's more people in the house and gets along really well with Greer to everyone's surprise, so he's a happy camper :] (at some point i want to create a proper team list for guz and maybe come up w names for them hehe)
Henry is a shy but proud lil guy and doesn't really trust Guz at first but trusts Juno's judgement so he warms up to the big boss man soon enough (plus Guz works hard to get on Henry's good side considering Henry never goes into a pokeball so he's around almost all the time LOL). Greer HATES Guz at first 😭 it takes her a long time to tolerate him - she finally starts turning around on her opinion of him when he helps Juno through a flashback/panic attack that she couldn't calm them down from on her own. Huey is super chill, so there's no issues there fdsjkl, I think he'd get along especially well with the grunts tbh LOL they'd probably try giving him a painkiller one day just to see what would happen and he'd be forever indebted to them (Juno finds out later and loses their mind because painkillers aren't made for pokemon and they have to rush him to a pokecenter to get him checked over JFDSKL). and Grimsby loves everyone, if you give him any bit of attention he'll love you forever, so Guzma gets on his good side pretty much right off the bat :3
THANK YOU AGAIN AND I'M SO SORRY ABOUT THE NOVEL-LENGTH ANSWER OMFG 😭😭 these were just such good questions and I could not make my answers any shorter than this HDSGJKL

The E4 friendship with Drayton gives me life fr so I'm coming in hot with Amarys and Drayton friendship!!
I will say that this is heavily influenced by my personal hc that Drayton has ADHD (for being unmotivated in classes, lethargic/sleepy a lot of times, eating something like the Academy Special and snacks for multiple texture, being keenly observant of his friends to name a few) but I like to think that Amarys would help him when he's like having a bad brain day
Amarys just makes me think that she has multiple items on hand that could make good fidget toys! Chains, little metal trinkets, just something that Drayton can fiddle with. Amarys also speaks in a clear, concise way that makes it easy for Drayton to understand / pick up the tone right away so he secretly appreciates that! I can also see her perhaps helping him in ways to make taking notes / organising school work more manageable when he's really not the sort to sit in the classroom
In return I can see Drayton being quick to defend Amarys if someone misunderstood her stoicism for being rude, standoffish, etc. IIRC he was the one in the game to say that despite acting that way, Amarys has a sensitive side. He's observant of his friends and cares for them a lot so he won't tolerate anyone being mean to them. Could also see Drayton showing Amarys his Archaludon and discuss various ways to care for Steel-types like how to polish em so that they don't rust, type of feed to give, etc
AND if we're having each of them giving him a Pokemon, I def love the idea of Amarys giving him a Piplup! Lil fella that plays around with the Cleffa and Torchic till they're tuckered out and now Drayton's trying to pick up three lil babies without waking any of them up
Tumblr media
Me reading that
Anon that's so fucking soft😭😭
Oh I love this, this is canon to me, this is canon in my heart
But oughgh I just answered an ask too saying that Amarys would give Drayton an A. Sandshrew bcmdnd but Piplup is still a dope choice tho, imagine if it's like Dawn's Piplup in the anime hahah love that funky lil shit hahaha
Also Amarys having lil items that are like fidget toys is just so special to me, that reminds me of my friend🥹 her letting Drayton borrow them, giving him smth to do. Y'know imagine if Amarys is one of the very few (probs the only one really lmfao) peeps who'd actually lend him her notes. I picture her like,, the one to take notes but never really using them much, she's a good student, and like Crispin she memorizes a lot of things quick (plus small hc from me, that she's the kid of Lenora and Hawes, and ofc those two are really smart ofc their kid would be smart af too hahah), so she usually just gives Drayton her notes, often telling him he could keep it
Carmine wonders why Amarys would just give her notes which she really went above and beyond to be so clear w stuff to Drayton who'd just crumple it while he's studying. If he even studies. But hey, Amarys didn't mind, not like she needed the notes much, plus she knows how Drayton has a hard time w class too, sometimes the notes would be enough to let him pass their tests
Anyways your honour BB E4 friendship real, god now I wanna make more stuff abt them, their dynamics w each other, they're interesting ofc, it'd be dope if we still get more of them if we do get bw3
But yeah anon omf love this hc, it's canon to me, this has a special place in my heart, Drayton w BB E4 friendship is so so real

Pokemon Journeys Episode 62 + 63 Review (that nobody asked for!)
These reviews I’ve been writing for Journeys have been so well-received I was honestly surprised! I think I’ll only write them for episodes that contribute to the storyline or character development rather than filler-esque episodes.
I know I’m late with episode 62 and a lot of people have already reviewed the episode. I had watched the raw on the Friday and I wanted to watch the sub to have a more informed opinion. However, my Grandmother’s dog was rushed to hospital and I was way too anxious to actually do anything other than worry. Thankfully, he was discharged and is doing a lot better!
Anyways, as usual I will keep my review below the cut, so if you want to read that’s great!
I don’t know how long this post will be given it's about two episodes but I’ll try to break it down into sections.
Build-up and the Beginning:
To be honest this was an episode that I had mixed feelings towards whilst waiting for it to air. As I have mentioned many times, one of the aspects I find frustrating about Journeys is the pacing and development, and once it was confirmed Sobble would be evolving into Drizzile after only one actual episode dedicated towards his development, I was honestly annoyed especially as Sobble was pushed to the side in favour of Grookey being the new “cute” starter.
The beginning of the episode wasn’t particularly great if I was honest, I didn’t understand the point of the television interview and then there was Sobble’s actual evolution scene. When the synopsis described Sobble’s evolution being triggered by him saving another Pokémon, I thought it was going to be something epic rather than him saving an Oddish from a falling berry. I think they could have handled Sobble’s actual evolution a lot better, they could have gone down the route of something similar to Professor Sycamore’s Garchomp when she evolved from Gible to Gabite and then to her current evolution, she was surrounded by the other laboratory Pokémon and Professor Sycamore and it was so wholesome. I think if Goh’s other Pokémon had at least witnessed the evolution it would have made the evolution sequence better, I mean Oddish didn’t even acknowledge that Sobble had saved it.
Drizzile:
For the majority of the episode, I felt so sad for Drizzile, I mean I was a little confused that he forgot about his middle evolution as Renji had it on the screen in Episode 54 (but never mind!). I just felt so sad for him after he saw his reflection and learnt he wasn’t an Inteleon yet. However, Goh’s other Pokémon didn’t help Drizzile feel any better, he was literally being tossed around left and right until he was caught by Big Bro Cinderace (that is my nickname for him) but sadly even Cinderace didn’t understand the extent of Drizzile’s feelings.
Throughout the series, we’ve had a lot of episodes surrounding a trainer and a Pokémon trying to understand one another’s feelings and they have honestly made some of the best episodes such as DP’s Stopped in the Name of Love, where Dawn’s Piplup was physically ready to evolve but emotionally he wasn’t and Dawn didn’t even realise the extent of Piplup’s feelings until Meowth translated for her. There’s even an episode in XY, where Serena didn’t understand Braixen’s attachment to her branch without James’ help. There’s probably even more but these are the two that I can think of at the top of my head. Even in these instances, Dawn and Serena didn’t realise the extent of their Pokémon’s feelings without the help of a third party (which was using Team Rocket a lot better than Journeys)
I went a bit off track, it's a lot easier for a Pokémon to understand their trainer’s feelings than a trainer to understand their Pokémon’s and that's because of a language barrier. Similar to animals in the real world, Pokémon have to use alternative means and signals to express their feelings and I think what made this episode more impactful was Goh not receiving that third party help (although Professor Cerise did give him a hint by notifying him about Pokemon experiencing personality changes when they evolve).
Whilst, I believe part of Drizzile’s depression stemmed from the fact he wasn’t an Inteleon yet, I think he was confused and emotionally drained due to these new innate traits he’s suddenly developed such as laziness. Whilst, the episode does acknowledge and try to address this issue for Drizzile, I don’t think it entirely hit the mark. Compared to the BW episode, A Village Homecoming, where a Zweilous under the care of Iris’ friend evolved into Hydreigon it went on a rampage because it was confused by the sudden change and scared until Iris calmed it down (which was some good development for her). Whilst, I respect the fact Goh gave Drizzile space and time to process his emotions, this ending is a little bit unsatisfactory to me, I’m sad Drizzile is just sat in a cave all alone, I was hoping by the end of the episode he would overcome his depression and accept his new form and traits. Plus, if the writers pull what they did with Farfetch’d and forget Drizzile exists, I’m going over there with a pitchfork!
Goh’s emotional development:
Now I won’t lie, lately, Goh has been getting on my nerves and I hate feeling that way especially given he’s meant to be a main character. However, one of the aspects that was annoying me was his rapid development particularly in the area of battle but this episode did an amazing job of representing Goh’s emotional development.
If this was Goh at the beginning of the series, there would have been no doubt he would have tried to drag Drizzile out of that cave instead he was taking his time and trying to coax Drizzile out until Cinderace decided to drag the poor boy out and it broke my heart seeing the single tear slide down Drizzile’s cheek more than it did every instance he cried as a Sobble.
What I love about this episode is Goh learning from his mistakes and recognising that Drizzile’s personality change was similar to when Scorbunny evolved to Raboot and then Raboot to Cinderace. Although they missed an opportunity with Ash, he could have brought up his experience with evolution and personality change with his Charizard. Anyway! As I mentioned in the Drizzile section it's harder for a Pokémon to articulate their feelings as humans do. However, even humans have difficulty expressing or even understanding their own feelings sometimes and Goh understood that.
That heart-to-heart, Goh had with Drizzile made me cry but it did such a great job reflecting Goh’s emotional development and that moment Drizzile wiped Goh’s tear as Goh had once done for him was so moving. As I previously mentioned, I like the message of giving someone space and time to process their feelings but as I previously mentioned that ending left me with some mixed feelings.
Conclusion:
Whilst, I would have preferred Sobble have more development before evolving and for the actual evolution to have been handled better. All in all, it was a good episode that honestly had me crying. The ending for me was a little unsatisfactory but I definitely think this has been one of the better Journeys episodes to have come out as of late.
Episode 63
It’s a miracle! They didn’t wait for 20 episodes to give Chloe and Eevee development and they went to a different region!
Prologue and Continuity:
At the beginning of the episode, the group are watching the Adult division of the Marine Athletics Race held in Hoenn. Eevee takes a particular interest as a Vaporeon is participating in the race and I really loved this link to her debut episode where she was copying all the Eeveelutions such as walking elegantly like Sylveon and attempting to swim like Vaporeon before nearly drowning (God love her!)
However, I love the fact similar to the Ponyta episode, Chloe takes the initiative and wants to meet Vaporeon and his trainer as it may be good to expose Eevee not only to her evolved forms but also learn from other trainers that have had an Eevee why they evolved them into certain forms (Ash this would have been a great opportunity to call May and Serena! Or even Virgil!)
Kairi and Vaporeon:
I honestly loved the dinner scene after the group tried the racecourse and it's a miracle Ash is actually using Dracovish! I loved the discussion Chloe had with Kairi asking why he chose to evolve his Eevee into a Vaporeon. And I liked the fact his answer was simple, his Eevee loved the sea, was a natural on a surfboard and evolving Eevee into a Vaporeon was a natural fit for the two of them.
I’ve only watched the episode raw, there’s a bit where I assume Goh asked Chloe what she would want her Eevee to evolve into. I think Chloe’s answer focused around the fact she wants Eevee to decide for herself rather than have her or someone else decide her path, a feeling Chloe probably relates to as her classmates all assumed she would want to be a Pokémon Professor like her father. Also, Eevee sleeping on top of Vaporeon was so wholesome, I’m sorry why are not talking about this!
The Ending:
After the incident caused by Goh’s Dewgong (honestly going from the episode preview I thought it was something to do with Team Rocket so Dewgong causing trouble was a nice change of pace and not doing Team Rocket dirty by using them as convenient plot devices!) Anyways, I loved the ending, as Kairi gave Chloe a Water Stone and I love the fact it doesn’t mean Chloe has to use the stone immediately but the stone is around and is there as an option. Chloe and Eevee can keep deepening their relationship which already increases Eevee’s evolution potential as three of her evolutions are triggered by the bond between trainer and Pokémon. Going down the line, I think Chloe meeting other trainers that have an Eevee or one of the Eeveelutions is a great way for her to develop and learn from other trainers.
All in all, this was a great Chloe and Eevee-focused episode (as mentioned in my overall Journeys critique I’m just sad Yamper is being pushed to the side when Chloe’s earlier development is attributed to her bond with him). Hopefully, in future episodes, Yamper can be more involved. Overall, the last two episodes of Journeys have been good. The trailer/preview they showed, Infernape’s BACK!!! Also, seeing more of Ash’s old Pokémon like Hawlucha and Noivern my favourite father-son duo!! Journeys finally delivering on what the fandom wanted! Also, I think I heard Kakihara’s voice in the trailer and if I’m right, I’ll be over the moon, he’s honestly one of my favourite voice actors >o<
All in all, Journeys might have some good content coming up, my only complaint being I don’t like how all the Gen 8 content is being shoe-horned into these mini arcs and we’re hardly seeing any Galar characters.

Momentary ~ A Pokeshipping Oneshot
A/N: So this was written sometime around Sun and Moon had just begun airing and a cameo by Misty and Brock were a distant, distant dream. So consider this an AU where Misty and Brock do not meet up with Ash during his Alola run. Their ages go from 15 to 18 by the end of the story. Hope you enjoy reading this!
Summary: Fifteen moments in the lives of Ash and Misty as they grow older and apart. Some short and some not long enough, but each somewhat important in bringing them closer.
FF.NET
 15
She sits down abruptly, the ground is slightly damp and she can feel the mud attach itself to her clothes but it doesn’t bother her. Summer nights are pleasant in Kanto, and all she wanted to do was take a stroll in the woods near Cerulean city, but she had forgotten how confusing the forests could be at night, even if it was one she had been visiting since she was a child. So she sits down, not caring about the dirt, to gather her thoughts and find her way back. But it is then that she wonders, whether she even wants to go back. Her family was tiring, the gym was tiring, her pokemon and an occasional visit or letter from old friends was her only relief. She had grown up too fast and she wanted to go back. Back to those days when crossing forests was something she could do with her eyes closed, to those days when she could sleep under the open sky with the warmth of the campfire making her feel safe. However, decisions needed to be taken and she had settled with the right one.
She heard a familiar groan and a chirp, a nag and a sigh, her eyes shone as she watched a fading image of her younger self passed her by, heading deeper into the forest accompanied by her three travelling companions and the usual chatter that surrounded them. A smile appeared on her lips as the ghosts of her past vanished into thin air, they were going to get lost, she remembered. She chuckled and looked up at the star studded sky, it was a beautiful night and she needed to enjoy it, she thought, even if she had to do it alone. She stood up and let her feet take control, knowing that no matter what, she’d find her way home.
 14
Ash was a forgetful person, everyone knew that. He also didn’t like thinking about complicated things, it gave him a headache and he could feel himself getting older. He was insensitive at times, and very stubborn too, once he set his mind on something it was difficult to stop him. But there were some sides to his personality that none were aware of. He had a terrible habit of writing letters but never posting them, he had a habit of dialing a phone number but hanging up before the call went through, he had a habit of buying things that he thought someone would like but never giving it to them. Somehow, this overtly clumsy side of his only showed itself when a certain redhead was involved. Every time he’d come home from his travels, the pile of unsent letters and tiny packages he’d hidden in his room would grow larger. He’d been in Alola for sometime now, longer than his usual journeys, and he was starting to get anxious about his mother snooping around in his room. He voiced his concern to Pikachu one night, but his best friend was no expert in human emotions so he only repeated that Mom was a good person. Ash wasn’t doubting his mother’s kindness, just her ability to stay out of his business but he could not get Pikachu to understand him so he sighed and gave up, what has to happen, will happen, he thought.
What happened was, in a drive to clean every inch of the house, Mr. Mime discovered the Ash’s pile of regrets and presented it to Delia. One look at the top letter and the little gifts, she understood her son’s intentions, and being the kind and helpful mother that she was, she packed all of it in a box and posted it to the person it was meant for.
 13
Misty had slept in the same clothes that she had worn for her midnight stroll, so when she woke up she wasn’t surprised to see the mud on her sheets only unimpressed with her past self. She was however, surprised when she began her first task of the day, which was sorting the mail and noticed the box that had arrived for her from Pallet Town. Curiosity won over shock and she hurriedly opened up the box.
She spent the next few hours locked up in her room, informing her sisters that she was down with a bad flu and they should stay away from her, which they promptly did. She couldn’t process what was happening, there was a pen with a Piplup on it, a box with Oshawott shaped cookies, a Manaphy locket and a Tympole t-shirt inside the box along with a stack of letters. She took a deep breath and began reading from the bottom of the pile.
12
Pikachu couldn’t understand why his trainer looked like his soul had left his body. Their new companions looked at him expectantly as they knew that Pikachu understood Ash more than they did, but sadly the yellow rodent had no answer for his friends. The call with Mom had gone well in Pikachu’s opinion, but at the end of it Mom said something that made Ash scream and end the call abruptly. He had been sitting on his couch-bed ever since, looking like a dead man.
11
Delia was pleasantly surprised with the doorbell ringing so early in the morning as she hadn’t been expecting anyone today. When she opened the door, she was greeted by a slightly out of breath but seemingly upset Misty. She understood why the redhead was here and ushered the girl into her kitchen so she could quickly whip up some breakfast for the long chat that lay ahead of them.
“Did you send them or did he?” Misty asked, without missing a beat.
Delia had only just begun pulling out the pancake mix from the cupboard, she paused midway and turned around to face the redhead, “I did...” she replied earnestly. She watched as Misty’s face fell and she got up, as if to leave so Delia rushed to her side, putting her arms on the younger girl’s shoulders she continued, “You know how forgetful Ash can be, I’m sure he meant to-”
“If he really did want to send them, he would have.”
10
Ash was having difficulty sleeping ever since his mother informed him that she had sent Misty all those gifts and letters that he had set aside for her in his room. In the beginning he couldn’t sleep because he couldn’t process the thought of those things actually reaching Misty. Now his mind was clouded with what she must have thought of them.
Did the t-shirt fit her fine?
Were the cookies still edible after a year?
Did she like the locket and the pen?
Did she read all the letters or just some of them?
Did she find them interesting or boring?
He just couldn’t stop thinking about it. Every time his mother called, he’d ask her if she had replied or dropped by the house, but the answer was same, no she hadn’t. He waited patiently for a letter from her to arrive in the mail, he thought maybe she was taking her time because she didn’t know what to say or she had too much to say. But her reply never came and Ash became disappointed, then irritated and eventually, he forgot about it.
Misty wanted to leave the minute she entered the house. The Ketchum household had always felt like home to her, but she was stepping foot in it after almost three years and her last visit hadn’t exactly been enjoyable. The house was crowded, which she was grateful for, but there were a lot of unfamiliar faces as well. She had been slightly late, intentionally, so the victory party was already in full-force, with the victor in question constantly surrounded by his friends. She stuck to talking to the people she knew, occasionally her eyes would drift towards him and she watched him only from afar, too afraid to approach him.
He spent the night surrounded by the league members and champions of the different region, but later in the night, a short-haired blonde attached herself to him. Every time Misty’s eyes would reach him, she’d be there next to him, smiling and laughing naturally as if she belonged there. The more she watched them together, the more suffocated she felt. There were too many people in the room, they were being too loud, it felt as if the walls were closing in on her, so she managed to slip out into the front garden as discreetly as she could to breathe. She stood outside in the dark, breathing heavily, and trying to piece her mind back together. She placed a hand on her chest and waited patiently for her heartbeat to slow down. It took a while but she was able to pull herself together and then she decided to leave. She took a few steps forward when she heard the door open behind her, the loud noises from inside the house floated through the air for an instant but then the door was shut and the noise died down. She decided to carry on, not bothering to check if someone had come out or not but the loud familiar voice stopped her in her tracks.
 8
“I see you kept the locket,” Ash said loudly, and watched as the redhead stopped and turned around slowly.
Their eyes met for the first time in years and suddenly he felt like looking away and keeping her gaze at the same time. Fortunately for him, Misty was the first to look away as her eyes fell down onto the Manaphy locket on her neck. She didn’t meet his eye when she replied.
“Did you expect me to throw it away?”
“Not really, I expected a reply,” Ash frowned, he was seeing her after such a long time that he couldn’t seem to stop looking at her, but she was looking everywhere except at him.
She scoffed in reply and shook her head, finally looking up to meet his gaze, “Congratulations on the title.”
He could hear the sincerity in her words but her eyes looked tired and her smile wasn’t bright enough, why, he couldn’t understand. He also couldn’t understand the anger slowly churning up at the bottom of his stomach, today was supposed to be a happy day for him so why couldn’t she be happy too?
“Thanks for showing up to the finals,” the words left his mouth before he could rethink them, each letter dripping with bitterness he didn’t know he was capable of feeling.
Her cerulean eyes flashed with anger as she balled up her fists trying to keep herself in check, “Maybe I would have, if my invitation hadn’t gotten lost in the mail.” Her reply didn’t miss a beat and Ash should have known better than to challenger her head on.
Turning away and leaving was much easier when he didn’t bother to stop her. She held back her emotions until she was settled inside the rapid train back to Cerulean. As soon as her head hit the window pane, the tears began to flow out of her eyes effortlessly.
She had imagined their reunion a million times in her head.
But none had turned out like the reality she had just faced.
By the time Misty reached the comfort of her room, she had already decided that it was finally time to move on.
 6
Ash kept his voice low as he faced his mother, careful not to wake some of the guests who had fallen asleep in the living room, “You lied to me.” He stated clearly.
Delia looked over her shoulder to find her son glaring intently at her, an expression she hadn’t seen on his face for a long time. Knowing very well what this was all about she decided to play innocent for a while longer, “Whatever do you mean, sweetie?”
“Misty did reply to my letters didn’t she?” He almost spat back at her. Delia found it endearing and reminiscent of his father, the fact that Ash was still trying to be respectful despite of being livid with her.
“No, Ash. She came to see me a few days after I posted them.” Delia replied quietly, their house was still filled with guests after all.
“And what did she say? What did you tell her?” The urgency in Ash’s voice clearly indicated that Misty’s early exit from the party last night had not been because she was feeling under the weather as her message in the morning had claimed.
“She wanted to know if I posted the letters on your behalf and I simply told her the truth.” Delia said softly.
“And why did you keep this hidden from me for so long?”
Now this was the question Delia wasn’t prepared to answer, “Ash, I just…” she began but had to pause to look for the right words, “I didn’t want to be the reason you lost your focus.” They weren’t the words she had been looking for but they were the ones she remembered.
“I’m not Dad you know,” Ash muttered avoiding her gaze as he continued, “as much as I look like him. I wouldn’t have lost my focus even if you had told me the truth Mom, if there is one thing that I have been sure about in life, it’s my goal to be a Pokemon Master.”
“I’m sorry, Ash.”
 5
Her skill to hold her breath under water for minutes was something she had been proud of since she was a baby. But as a trainer it helped Misty train with her water pokemon in a way unique only to her. She had been learning the movements of Dragon Dance with her Gyarados for some time now. He’d perform the move countlessly for her underwater and she would try to copy his fluid movements but there were some turns that she just couldn’t master, so she had started to devote an hour to this training every day. Her other pokemon found it very amusing that instead of teaching them a move, she was trying to learn from them and would occasionally join in. Gyarados was more than happy to be in total control of the situation and lately, the training had evolved into more of an underwater dancing session among all the pokemon of the Cerulean Gym and their leader.
When she resurfaced and came face to face with Pikachu all of a sudden, she almost let out a shriek. From behind her Psyduck rushed to the surface to greet Pikachu, happy to see his friend after so long. The pool area of the Cerulean city gym was suddenly filled with loud, happy cries of various pokemons as they all came forward to greet their friend Pikachu, and his trainer who stood a few paces behind the electric mouse.
“Were you trying to drown yourself?” Ash asked, skipping past any greetings and explanations breezily, “I’ve been standing here for what, ten minutes?”
“No. I’m trying to learn Dragon Dance.” Misty responded, and instantly regretted it. She cursed herself mentally as she climbed out of the pool. Whatever happened to her strong resolve from last night? If nothing else, she should definitely be serving Ash with a strong silent treatment, but here she was taking the conversation forward. Once she stood up and looked at him, she found him staring at her blankly with his mouth wide open.
“You’re trying to learn a dragon-type move?” He replied, nothing but confusion covering his face.
“No, I’m trying to learn the movements to the dragon-type move,” She answered, rolling her eyes at his denseness, some things never do change.
As clarity dawned upon Ash, he ran his chocolate coloured eyes over her body with an expression of interest that she had never seen on his face before. Only recently had Misty switched from her usual one piece swimsuit to a bikini as it allowed her to move her torso more freely which made it easier to keep up with Gyarados. And up until now, she hadn’t seen it as much of a change but the glint in Ash’s eye made her immediately reconsider her wardrobe choice of the day. She felt herself redden under his gaze, and quickly made her way towards the towel rack to cover herself up.
Once she faced him again, she noticed a tint of pink on Ash’s cheeks as he himself must’ve realized that he had stared for longer than was considered normal.

Pikachu quickly climbed up on to his shoulder the moment he realized that Ash was getting nervous. He had practiced the conversation he wanted to have with the redhead with his partner on the train ride to Cerulean, so Pikachu considered himself as the torch bearer who would see Ash until the end of this situation. Obviously, the rodent didn’t comprehend that his trainer’s fidgeting wasn’t just because he was worried about the way things would turn out between him and Misty, but more so because he had seen her in a bikini for the first time. Which technically should not have affected him as much, considering she bared her mid-riff the entire time they travelled together as kids.
But, after all, they clearly weren’t kids anymore.
Pikachu nuzzled his nose against Ash’s cheek to get his attention, which broke his train of thought heading steadily down the wrong direction. The raven haired boy shook his head furiously to clear it of all thoughts except the speech he had practiced in the morning and decided to cut right to the chase.
“I just want to you to know that I didn’t send the letters, not because I didn’t want to,” he started, speaking fast so he could get it over with as soon as possible, “but because, I didn’t have the courage to.” He stopped to catch a breath and also muster up all his remaining guts for the last bit, “and that ever since we parted ways from Johto, not a single day has gone by when I haven’t thought of you.”
Ash didn’t want to wait for a reply, in fact he was dreading it so when Misty didn’t say anything immediately after he finished speaking, he turned on his heels to leave. She’d already walked out on him once, so now it was his turn to return the favour.
 3
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry for not coming to watch the finals,” she called out abruptly, Ash was already near the exit but she knew her voice had reached him as he halted in his tracks but didn’t turn around to face her. Even in the million reunion scenarios she had fantasized about in her head, she’d never had imagined Ash saying something so purely honest that made her heart beat faster than the speed of light. She wasn’t sure if she would be able to give him a similar kind of response but she knew that she at least owed him an honest apology.
So she easily closed the distance between them, slightly relieved that he still wasn’t facing her because it was easier to get the words out that way, “I know it didn’t sound like it when I said it last night, but I am really happy that you won.” She lowered her eyes towards the ground as she added, “Champion.”
Pikachu read the atmosphere faster than the two trainers and happily jumped into Misty’s arms from Ash’s shoulder and snuggled up to her, mewing softly.
Ash turned to face her even as he felt a slight blush creep up on his face from hearing her call him by his new title for the first time, grinning ear to ear he teasingly asked her, “Who’s the wannabe now?”
The redhead returned his cocky grin with an exasperated smile and hugged Pikachu even tightly as she giggled, “But the real Champion is you, Pikachu, for being able to stick with a trainer like him for so long.”
The newly crowned Champion rolled his eyes in response, when all he really wanted to do was sigh in relief. He hadn’t been able to settle down since their meeting last night and had gone to sleep thinking that despite of winning his dream, he may have lost something just as important to him. But he felt his whole body relax as the fact that everything was okay between him and Misty finally registered in his brain. Not wanting to lose the momentum, he decided to take a chance.
“So, since I’m here already. Why don’t we go out for lunch?”
It was satisfying, to put it simply, to watch Misty turn completely red under his gaze as she struggled to reply.
 1
“Su-sure…lunch would be doable,” Mew, she hated how her voice sounded right now, but what was more annoying was how much Ash was enjoying watching her squirm. He’d managed to get so much more confident and cocky after gaining a mere two centimeters over her.
“Let me just get dressed quickly,” She managed in her normal bossy tone, gesturing towards her swimsuit.
“Why, I’d prefer you in this than any other clothes any day,” Ash tilted his head and smirked at her, indicating that he had clearly won this round.
It was only a second later that the mallet knocked him straight to the ground.

In which a temporary team is formed
Tumblr media
First: In which the human is transformed Next: In which they finish building a house Previous: In which they go to the kangaskhan’s home
In the morning, the group enjoyed a quick breakfast with Kangaskhan, who had to get up early for her job, before heading back to Pokemon Square to complete some missions. When they stopped by the mission board, they were reminded that Peaky still wanted to show them those wanted posters that Team Meanies had made up, so they decided to make a quick stop there, now that business at the post office had slowed down mostly to normality.
However, for once Peaky wasn’t available to speak with them, so they decided that they would have to return later. Luckily, Alex’s badge had arrived, so the stop wasn’t pointless. His badge had a similar appearance to Keahi and Nelvana’s, however smaller than theirs. He cheerfully pinned it onto the bag, as he lacked an accessory like the leading pair, and off they went.
There were still a few dungeons left to show Tsuki, and there ended up being enough jobs for those locations to take up the morning. They returned to Pokemon Square early, and enjoyed a simple picnic lunch before trying to check back in at the Pelipper Post Office. This time, Peaky was chatting with a pidgeotto behind the counter. They looked up at the sound of the quartet entering, and Peaky hopped over to greet them.
“Hey Team Galaxy! You here to send a letter?” Peaky chirped.
“Actually, we were hoping to see those posters you mentioned a couple days ago,” Keahi told them.
“Oh! Right! Here, I’ll grab one!” Peaky exclaimed, scurrying back behind the counter. “Each copy looks different, I think that they drew each one individually!” they added, “ah! Here we are!” Peaky hopped back over to the team, laying down a large paper in front of them.
Across the top of the page written “WANTED” in letters so big that there wasn’t enough room, and it had to be squeezed together to have the entire word. Underneath, written slightly more properly, was “Team Galaxy: Dead or Alive,” which made Nelvana take in an uneasy gulp of breath as she silently read it. Below all the text, were three poorly done drawings of Keahi, Nelvana, and Alex respectively. Whichever of the Team Meanies members had drawn up this particular poster seemed to have had a lot of difficulty with Keahi’s beak and Nelvana’s skull, the former ending up as just a triangle, and the latter being practically a spiky ball surrounded by pencil smudges.
“Huh, they forgot to write down the reward for catching us,” Alex commented, “I guess we’re priceless,” he joked.
Nelvana snickered, her tension at the text melting away the longer she looked at the drawings, “I have to give them some credit on my portrait, cubone skulls are challenging to get the hang of drawing,” she said, “that doesn’t excuse Alex’s nose though. At least they remembered your scar.”
“Yeah, but they forgot where! Why did they draw it through my eye?” Alex responded.
“I guess it looks more intimidating?” Nelvana suggested, “I think you really scared Gengar. Plus, they all had to draw from memory. And the one he could base off, he was probably more focused on finding more excuses.”
Keahi giggled, “they drew one of my eyes bigger than the other! And look at the feathers! They’re practically just one big mound!”
“I wonder if they’re just bad at drawing, or if they needed reference?” Nelvana asked no on in particular.
“I guess we’ll never know,” Alex answered, stepping back from the poster to signal that he was finished looking.
“Perhaps they should have taken art lessons from you, Nel,” Tsuki suggested, “then again, there is still the matter of whether you’d even give lessons.”
“Uhh, I don’t consider myself a good enough teacher to give lessons to anyone,” Nelvana murmured.
“Thanks for letting us see this anyway, Peaky!” Keahi chirped.
“No problem! Now I guess all of us should get to work, shouldn’t we? See you guys later!” Peaky replied.
The spearow fluttered back to the pidgeotto, who was patiently waiting for their return, and Team Galaxy turned and left the office. They went back home, and watched Nelvana doodled in the dirt while they waited for the others to arrive so they could get started.
Wynaut and Wobbuffet were punctual, arriving at noon, excited to get to work and help out the silver-ranked rescue team with their base. It was another ten minutes before the mankeys arrived, but they had reluctantly brought Primeape with them. It turned out that she had forcefully come along to assist with the basics, certain that everyone just needed a better push to get started than the next to no experience most of them had. She had modified their notes, and went ahead and put an order for all the supplies, which left Team Galaxy in a mix of thankfulness, and bitterness at their work being discarded so easily, when they had thought that they had a better grasp on all of this.
The materials wouldn’t arrive until the next day, but fortunately there was still work to be done. They had to prepare the land for building a new base, which mainly meant that they had to get rid of the old one. By breaking it apart. It was sad to have to destroy their old home, but knowing that they would build a better one kept their spirits up, and it helped release some tension. Wynaut and Wobbuffet weren’t able to help terribly much, but the mankeys enjoyed themselves in the destruction. Primeape simply continued supervising everyone, over calling out a comment or critique every so often, much to the displeasure of Team Galaxy, especially since the fighting-type wasn’t actually assisting with the manual labor.
With the area cleared out, they were left with no way to progress until the supplies arrived, and so everyone left for the day. Team Galaxy ended up having enough time to complete a few more missions before heading back to the cottage with Kangaskhan, enjoying another evening with the normal-type family.
It was the next morning that they spotted a new arrival in Pokemon Square; Shiftry. The older grass-dark-type was brooding off to the side of town, and surprising, Lombre was standing beside him. They appeared to be speaking to each other, but it was being done much too quietly to be heard by bystanders.
“Shiftry? He’s back? And there’s Lombre too?” Keahi whispered.
    “Who’s Shiftry?” Tsuki asked.
“He…” Keahi trailed off, “He was the nuzleaves’ team leader.”
“Ah,” Tsuki murmured, “do you know him well?”
“No, we only watched his team accept Jumpluff’s mission,” Nelvana answered quietly, tracing the cracks on her club as she recalled the event.
Despite them staying quiet, it didn’t take long for Shiftry to look up and notice the team. Lombre looked over as well, and stiffened upon seeing them. He was about to sneak away, but Shiftry dragged the grass-water-type over to the quartet.
“Hello Team Galaxy,” Shiftry greeted somberly.
“H-Hey,” Lombre mumbled, struggling against Shiftry in a way to try not to make it obvious what he was doing, but failing in all forms.
“Hi guys!” Keahi greeted, “we… we haven’t seen either of you in awhile, how are you?”
“I’ve… been managing,” Shiftry sighed, “look, I just wanted to thank you guys. For everything. You rescued me from Zapdos, and while you couldn’t rescue my teammates… you brought that damned murder to justice. So, thank you for that.”
“Oh, uh, no problem!” Keahi replied, “look, we…”
Shiftry shook his head, “look, don’t worry about it. I just want to move on, alright? Just needed to give you your thanks first. You deserve it.”
“Okay,” Keahi sighed, “so, you’re staying here now?”
“For now.” Shiftry nodded. “Anyway, this lil’ frog has something to say too,” he continued, shoving Lombre at them.
“Ack!” Lombre croaked, stumbling forward. “Geez, you don’t need to be so rough…” he huffed, brushing off his arms before turning back to Team Galaxy and stiffening again. “Shoot…”
Shiftry glowered down at Lombre, who was looking more uncomfortable by the minute.
“F-Fine!” Lombre hissed, “I’m sorry for distrusting you like that! And for almost joining Team Meanies to hunt you down! And for… and I really messed up, didn’t I? I’m sorry.”
Keahi smiled warmly at Lombre, “it’s alright. You messed up, but we forgive you.”
“Would have been nice to not have you be so reluctant about apologizing though,” Alex mumbled.
“He’s just a wimp,” Shiftry chuckled, harshly nudging Lombre.
“Yeah, yeah. Can I go now?” Lombre sighed.
“Sure, go ahead, frog,” Shiftry hummed.
Just as he said, Shiftry stuck around Pokemon Square during the next few days. He continued avoiding most of the townsfolk, but would give Team Galaxy a wave as they went by, and sometimes they would see him chatting with the kecleon brothers.
Construction continued as well, the supplies arriving on time to the Kecleon Shop for further work. Primeape kept coming with the mankeys to contribute with her advice, and by the end of the day, was actually helping with the work instead of sitting on the sidelines. It was a new, challenging, and long job, but they all found themselves enjoying their first few days of working.
It was the fourth day that brought more change. Arriving in Pokemon Square with Kangaskhan that morning greeted them with a large crowd in the center of town with many unfamiliar pokemon.
“Woah, that’s a big crowd. Wonder what’s happening this time?” Keahi gasped, “hey look! Those guys have badges! And so do they! And… is everyone here part of a team?” zie continued.
“Look, there’s Team New Blooms, let’s go ask them,” Nelvana suggested, pointing over to the familiar chikorita and machop.
The quartet weaved their way around the crowd towards the pair, who were standing beside a piplup and chimchar wearing matching scarves around their necks.
“Oh, hey Galaxy!” Melanie greeted, “you’re late!”
    “Late for what?” Keahi asked.
“We… we don’t know,” Everett admitted, “Shiftry sent out letters to every team asking us to meet here yesterday, but didn’t specify why.”
“Yeah, didn’t you guys get one?” Melanie questioned.
“No… but that might be because we don’t have a mailbox right now. We’re rebuilding,” Nelvana told them.
“Ah! That explains it!” Everett chirped, “anyway, this is Team Disaster! We started talking while we were waiting for Shiftry to get this meeting started,” he added, acknowledging the other duo.
“Hello! I’m Cecil, and this is my partner Poplar,” the chimchar said.
“Hey there,” Poplar huffed, crossing her flippers across her chest. “Let’s hope this starts soon, this is boring.”
“Be patient Poplar…” Cecil sighed, not looking to pleased to be waiting so long himself.
As if on cue, Shiftry began speaking, “alright everyone! Quiet down!” he yelled, and waited until the huge group went quiet. “Look, I know you’re all antsy and confused, so I’ll do my best to be quick, alright?” he continued, “I don’t like giving public speeches much anyway,” he added under his breath. “Team A.C.T. left to fight Groudon nearly a week ago, and no one has heard from them since!”
The crowd began whispered amongst one another again, and Shiftry waited for everyone to calm down again before continuing.
“So, this probably means they got stuck, and their badges malfunctioned. And I refuse to leave them there a moment longer! Which means we have to send out a team to rescue them! That’s why you’re all here! I sent letters out to every team that’s a silver or gold rank in hopes that we can combine forces for a search team,” Shiftry explained, “since clearly, as none of us have been able to achieve platinum rank on our own, there is no way just sending one team will be successful. I suggest that the stronger among us to face the perils of Magma Cavern, where Groudon resides. Any volunteers?”
This final question was met by silence for the first few seconds, filling the air with a tense silence, everyone wondering who would volunteer to go into the dungeon that the highest ranked team hadn’t returned from.
“Maybe we should go!” Keahi whispered to zir teammates.
“We should…” Nelvana agreed, but hesitated.
“What about the base?” Tsuki pointed out.
Keahi scrunched up zir face, “oh right… this feels more important though.”
“Look, if no one else volunteers, then we will, alright?” Nelvana offered.
    “Okay,” Keahi nodded.
    “I’ll go.”
A large blastoise wearing a striped green bandanna on his head walked from out of the crowd, and up to Shiftry.
“Magma Cavern sounds like there will be a lot of fire-types, and my water-type attacks will blast right through them!” Blastoise proclaimed.
With first volunteer, the ice seemed to be broken for others to join in this make-shift team as well.
“Very well, I’ll help out too,” Octillery, who wore a lavender sash around her neck, announced. “You’ll need the extra strength here, sweetheart,” she purred.
“Me too!” Golem, one of the few in the crowd with no accessory, called out. “We can’t only send in water-types! My rock and ground moves will shake up those caverns!” he boasted.
“Two waters and a rock-ground…” Nelvana murmured, “but… Groudon is a ground-type with drought. This won’t be enough to beat them if we’re just going off of type, which seems to be what they think they’re focusing on.”
Alex blinked, “you’re right… should we tell them? We should, shouldn’t we…”
Nelvana bit her lip, but nodded. With a glance back at their teammates, along with Team New Bloom and Team Disaster, they took a step further into the crowd.
“Hey, just a warning, Groudon is a ground-type with drought! Are you sure this is the plan you want to go with?” Alex yelled.
Everyone turned towards the pair, causing both of them to stiffen uncomfortably from being stared at. Keahi and Tsuki quickly joined them, Keahi leaning close beside Nelvana to comfort her.
“Knew it was a ground-type, but drought, huh? Where did you hear that?” Blastoise questioned.
“Ditto,” Nelvana answered courtly before Alex could.
Blastoise blinked in surprise, but Octillery chimed in, “don’t you kids worry about it. We shouldn’t have to fight Groudon, this is just a search mission. We just need to get through the dungeon, which will have fire-types,” she told them.
“Thanks for the tip though!” Golem added, “I think we’ve got this though!”
“Anyone else, then?” Shiftry asked, his eyes lingering on Team Galaxy for a moment as he scanned the crowd, before passing them by.
“I think we can take this! Feeling pretty confident about this mission!” Blastoise exclaimed.
“We should name our team, for good luck!” Golem announced.
“Boys… I don’t think we have time for that,” Octillery sighed.
Shiftry coughed, “you three can decide that on your own. If no one else wants to join them, then meeting dismissed, I suppose.”
Eagerly taking the chance to do their own thing, nearly all the teams departed, many of them to the Pelipper Post Office, and the rest out of town. Team Galaxy and a couple others lingered around the center of Pokemon Square, whispering to one another. Shiftry left the temporary team and walked up to the quartet.
“I’m surprised you guys didn’t volunteer,” Shiftry commented.
“No offense, but it might be for the better,” Blastoise, rudely barging into a beginning conversation that wasn’t his, said. “Look, Team Galaxy, you may have been through that path and beaten the bird trio, but Groudon is an entirely different story. We’re more experienced, we can handle this.”
Shiftry growled, rolling his eyes at Blastoise’s comment before turning and leaving towards Whiscash Pond. Octillery and Golem, along with their actual teams, who were the other few lingerers, waved Blastoise back over to them, leaving Team Galaxy along.
“Jeez, what a jerk,” Alex snapped, glowering at Blastoise. “Ditto though? Good excuse, helps keep us from explaining a lot.”
    “It wasn’t a ditto? I can’t remember…” Nelvana murmured.
“Nah, it was an illusion. Ditto worked better as a quick answer though,” Alex replied.
“Wait, you guys fought Groudon before?” Keahi questioned, zir beak gaping open in surprise.
“Not the real one, but yes,” Alex answered.
“…I… have a bad feeling about this search mission,” Nelvana admitted.
“Me too,” Tsuki agreed, “but it isn’t me sensing it yet, so we’ll have to see how this turns out. Hopefully it just stays as a bad feeling.”

Safe Travels - Part 1: In Abundant Relations, Chapter 1
Surprise! Happy Ikarishipping Day!
Pairings: Paul/Dawn, May/Drew, Candice/Zoey, Steven Stone/Cynthia, Wallace/Winona, and a lil Togekiss/Honchkrow
Rating: General
Summary: Paul loses to Brandon at their rematch in Snowpoint City and intends on challenging him once more in Hoenn. Dawn, who intends to participate in Hoenn contests, runs into him on the ship ride to Slateport City. Paul seeks Dawn’s coordinating expertise for a contest that Cynthia tells him he should participate in, and so, while Dawn is puzzled as to why Paul has to partake in the contest, so begins their journey together — ikarishipping.
This can also be found on AO3. (Please note: This will not be posted on Ffn until I finish it posting the first part completely on AO3 or until I decide how to approach posting the multiple parts on Ffn, since it doesn't have a series grouping system like AO3.)
Notes: I'm not done with this series yet, but I wanted to post at least the first two chapters of the Part 1 in celebration of the ikari revival! I will also post the remaining previews left on Tumblr soon, so be sure to check them out! From what I have planned, the setting of this fic is not just restricted to Hoenn, but will feature other regions as well. There will be A LOT of characters, needless to say, and I’ll probably squeeze in a few implied or minor ships in there, too. There are quite a few twists that I’m excited but also nervous to write and put out there, but buckle your seatbelts, guys, because from here on out, it's going to be a very, long ride.
“Pip, piplup!”
Dawn’s Piplup races to the other end of the outer deck, nearly tripping on his way there.
“Hey!” Dawn pants out. She is crouched down, with her hands on her knees, trying to recover her breath. “Slow down, Piplup!” With a final huff, she straightens up and continues running after her Pokémon.
The ship that Dawn is on has only left Sandgem Town a few hours ago. Things have moving in such a whirlwind that she still can’t believe that she is on her way to Hoenn – the land of the birth of contests. She is overwhelmed and is nervous to be traveling far from home, but also excited to see what new adventures she will embark on.
When she finally catches up to the Penguin-like creature, she is surprised to see the familiar, purple-haired boy Piplup is pointing to.
“Pip, lup!”
“Huh? That’s Paul,” Dawn states in surprise. “Hey, Paul!” she calls out, waving her hands. Piplup waves and cries cheerfully as well.
He turns around at the sound of her voice and meets her face. His eyes light up in recognition and he raises his hand slightly. “Hey.” He’s quiet for a moment while Dawn walks up to him.
She grins. “Remember who I am this time?” she teases.
He ignores her words. “Is Ash with you? I’d like a battle with him.”
Her elated smile falls into a frown, though not by much, because he does remember her as Ash’s friend. “Oh, I’m sorry, Paul, but he went back to Kanto last month . . . though, I think he’s in Unova now.”
“I see . . .” he trails off, as his eyes inspect her face, struggling to remember.
You’ve got to be kidding me! Dawn scowls, feeling the annoyance bubble in her chest. He really doesn’t remember her name. She opens her mouth, ready to shout. ‘Excuse me, Sir Rudeness, it’s Dawn! D-A-W-N!’
“Dawn. The coordinator friend.”
Her eyes widen in surprise, before her lips curl into a smile. “You do remember!”
He says nothing, but stares at her smiling face blankly for a few moments. “See you,” he finally says, before walking away.
Dawn’s smile slowly fades away, and then she sighs to herself and shakes her head knowingly, as Piplup cries in confusion.
“Pip, pip?” That’s it?
“No need to worry, Piplup. That’s just Paul for you.”
“ . . . and I have to show you all of the best places to eat in Petalburg!”
“Only in Petalburg?” Dawn teases the girl on the screen in front of her. “What about the rest of Hoenn, May?”
On the screen, she sees May smirk. “I’m going to give you a list of the best restaurants in Hoenn before I go back to Johto, silly!”
She smiles back at her friend cheerfully. “I’ll hold you to it!”
Dawn is about to ask May about Professor Birch, but she swears she sees a flash of purple from the corner of her eye. She turns her head from side to side, as her Piplup, who is in his usual spot in her arms, questions her.
“Pip, pip?”
“What’s wrong, Dawn?”
She shakes her head. “I thought I saw something, but I think I might have just imagined it. No need to worry. What were you going to say?”
“I was going to tell you that Drew and I talked to Professor Birch and he’s more than happy to give you one.”
“Awesome!” She looks down at Piplup. “Did you hear, Piplup? We’re getting our first, new Hoenn Pokémon added to the team!”
Piplup chirps back at her happily, “Pip piplup!”
May goes on to explain the three Hoenn starters Pokémon to Dawn, and they chat a little more until Piplup’s stomach growls loudly, much to his embarrassment. With a laugh, Dawn decides to bid an also chuckling May goodbye and head down for dinner.
The trainer’s dining area is not so shabby, though it is not too formal, either. It’s a huge, bustling auditorium where trainers partake in a buffet, sit together and dine; because of the ample space, they are able to let their Pokémon out of their Pokéballs and feed them as well.
Dawn’s eyes scan through the hall to find a place to sit. Though she doesn’t mind sitting with strangers, there aren’t a lot of empty seats in the first place. She did not realize that she was on the phone with May for so long.
“Piplup!”
“Huh?” Dawn glances to where her Pokémon points. She smiles at him graciously. “Thanks, Piplup! I can always count on you!” She pushes the cart of her and her Pokémon’s food hurriedly to the table before someone else can take the unoccupied seat.
“Hey, Paul,” she says, as she approaches his small table, where he and his Pokémon, on the ground near him, eat, “ do you mind if we sit here?”
His hand, holding a dinner roll, pauses in the air. He seems mildly annoyed but shrugs anyway. “I don’t care.” He takes a bite into the bread.
Dawn turns to Piplup. “Alright.” She takes out her Pokéballs and throws them into the air. “Time to eat, everyone!”
A chorus of her Pokémon’s cries is heard as they’re released from their Pokéballs and cheer in happiness.
She then pulls the Pokémon food from the cart and sets each bowl down in front of her Pokémon, the biggest going to her Mamoswine, of course. She then rummages through her backpack and pulls out her big container of poffins (and though it doesn’t look that big, it holds a lot more than one might think, which is why Dawn loves it so much). She puts a few poffins into each of their bowls as well.
When she gets to Togekiss’s bowl, Paul’s Honchkrow comes forward to them.
“Hey, Honchkrow!” Dawn smiles warmly, petting the top of his head lightly. “Would you like a poffin?” She holds a pink one out for him. He sniffs it hesitantly, but Togekiss reassures him that it is good. To Dawn’s surprise, Honchkrow has a sudden infatuated look in his eyes, and opens his mouth wide for the poffin. She giggles knowingly and feeds him, and then stands up from her crouched position, stretching as she does. She then walks over to the table so she can sit down and finally eat.
“What did you do to my Honchkrow?”
Dawn looks up to meet Paul’s narrowed eyes. “I fed him a poffin,” she informs him innocently, deciding to withhold that his Honchkrow has a crush on her Togekiss for now. “You don’t mind, right? They’re supposed to be good for Pokémon.”
He looks displeased, and opens his mouth to say something, but she beats him to it.
“Reggie would approve of them. They’re not store-bought or anything – I make my poffins myself using different types of berries. No need to worry, Paul!” she assures him.
He turns his face away and grunts before answering, “Fine.”
Dawn is satisfied with his answer, and quickly digs into her food. Arceus, she’s starving.
“Fros, froslass?”
Dawn looks up from her meal to see Paul’s Froslass in front of her. It looks like Honchkrow has spread the word. She holds back a giggle at the thought. “You want a poffin, too, Froslass?”
“Froslass,” Paul warns, giving her a steady glare. “Go eat your food.”
“Fros.” Her little shoulders slump, as the Pokémon turns around.
“Hey,” Dawn exclaims, grabbing Froslass’s shoulder, feeling the Pokémon’s cold skin beneath her fingers, and then turning to frown at Paul. “Don’t do that. I have more than enough to go around. I made a fresh batch last night before we left Sinnoh.” She passes the open container on the table to Froslass, who takes it hesitantly from her. “Here,” she says softly. “For you and for the rest of Paul’s Pokémon, too.”
“Lass?” Froslass gives her trainer a questioning stare; Paul nods curtly.
After Froslass drifts away, he glares at Dawn, who resumes eating. “Please, don’t spoil my Pokémon. I’ve worked hard to get to where I want them to be, and I don’t need you to ruin it for me now.”
“Now, hold on, Paul.” She puts her fork down and her eyes meet his. “There’s a difference between taking care of your Pokémon and spoiling them. I understand them you feed them regularly and all, but, sometimes, it’s good to treat them for all of the hard work they’ve done, you know?”
Paul sighs. “I already told you once that I’m not like Ash. I’ll admit that I’ve learned some things from him . . . but this pampering . . . it’s just not my thing.” He looks up at her, and, for the first time ever, Dawn sees uncertainty in his eyes.
Dawn smiles softly, almost in reassurance. “You don’t have to do what Ash does. And no one said you have to pamper your Pokémon, either.” She turns around to see his Pokémon eating the poffins happily, while they also talk and play with Dawn’s Pokémon.
“They work and train hard to fulfill your desire of getting stronger and stronger, and they don’t mind that you may get a little too hard on them – you can tell that they love you a lot. All they need in return is just a little love from you, too. Maybe playing with your Pokémon isn’t your thing, but a little treat now and then, a little break every once in a while, or even some words of encouragement from you . . . it would mean the world to them.”
She looks back at Paul’s pensive face. “And with that, your bond with them will grow stronger. You and your team will grow stronger, as well.”
It’s quiet for a moment before Paul shrugs, and then resumes eating. Dawn sighs in defeat, as it seems that her words probably haven’t gone through his thick skull, and goes back to digging into her food.
“Which starter are you picking from Professor Birch?”
Dawn’s eyes widen and she then sets her dinner roll down onto her plate – she’s never going to be able to finish this meal. “Aha!” she cries out triumphantly, pointing at him. “I knew I saw you! You were eavesdropping on my conversation with May!”
He narrows his eyes at her. “And? You once eavesdropped on my conversation with Reggie.”
A warm blush rises to her cheeks. “A-Ah! Right. I forgot about that.” She scratches the back of her head and smiles sheepishly at him. “Let’s consider it even, then.”
“Whatever.” He crosses his arms over his chest. “Answer the question.”
Geez, he’s so bossy. “I . . . I don’t know. They all sound great, really.”
“Pathetic.” He sighs and rolls his eyes. “I should have suspected as much from someone like you.”
Dawn narrows his eyes at him. “What’s that supposed to mean!?”
“Exactly what I said.” His smirk is taunting, causing feelings of impatience to arise within Dawn.
“Oh, yeah? What Hoenn starter would you choose?”
“I didn’t get a chance to receive one, so I haven’t given much thought to it.”
“Huh.” That causes Dawn’s annoyance to cease. “You know, I can ask Professor Birch to give you a Pokémon as well,” she offers, but the words surprise her. She doesn’t know where that came from – hell, she doesn’t even know if the Professor would be willing to give him a Pokémon as well, since May was the one who asked him to give Dawn one. She begins to anxiously pick at and rip apart her dinner roll as she waits for his answer.
“No, thanks. I’m not interested.” His voice is curt. Dawn looks at his plate and realizes that he has finished eating.
“Why?” she questions, twisting the bread further in her hands. “You can train it up to participate in the Hoenn League!”
He exhales sharply in frustration, the fork in his hand dropping onto his plate with a loud clank. Dawn takes the moment to munch on the deconstructed roll. “I’ve already beaten eight gym leaders, and have fought and lost in the Ever Grande Conference.”
She swallows down her food before speaking. “Oh. I forgot you travelled through Hoenn already.” She rubs the back of her neck sheepishly. “I figured you caught some of your Pokémon from other regions, but I wasn’t able to tell if any were from Hoenn.”
He nods. “Hoenn was the second region I travelled through. I caught my Hariyama, Froslass, and Aron there.” He reaches into his pocket to grab his Pokéballs and recall his Pokémon.
“I see. Is there a reason that you’re going back again, then?”
“Hmph.” He stands up from the table, empty plate in hand. He reaches down to pick up the bowls his Pokémon ate from, stacking them one on top of the other and carrying them effortlessly, and it makes Dawn slightly envious of how easy he makes it look. “That’s none of your concern.”
She feels irritation rush through her once more – Paul has a talent for stirring such feelings within her. “Well, excuse me for trying to make small talk,” she grumbles scornfully, as she crosses her arms over her chest.
“There’s no need for that.” He exhales sharply. “What a troublesome girl,” he mutters to himself as he walks away from Dawn’s fuming figure.
Her eyebrows shoot up to her forehead, gone from irritated to furious. “What did you call me!?”
He smirks, tilting his head slightly to the left so it is angled towards her. “Hm, like I said – troublesome girl.”
And then he walks away, leaving behind a fuming Dawn.
Dawn and Piplup are enraptured by the lights.
Being from the small Twinleaf Town, Dawn never got to see the city lights often, until she travelled through cities with Ash and Brock. But none of those city lights compare to what she sees now – not even the gorgeous Valor Lakefront, where Dawn had participated in the Wallace Cup and Sinnoh Grand Festival.
“Look at all of the lights, Piplup!” she tells her penguin companion, as they marvel from the upper deck of the cruise liner. “That’s Pokétopia! It’s where really powerful trainers go to participate in coliseum battles.”
“Piplup, piplup!” Her Pokémon points to one of the skyscrapers and puffs his chest out proudly.
Dawn follows where Piplup is pointing to and gasps. “There’s a Piplup on the top of that building!” She points to the other buildings with widened eyes. “Ahh, there’s a Toxicroak, Turtwig, and Chimchar, too! Oh, and look at the Bronzor Ferris wheel!”
“Pokétopia has a lot of Sinnohan influence, since the head architect who designed the buildings is from Sinnoh.”
A “Huh?” slips out from Dawn’s lips, before she turns to her left to see Paul standing next to her, staring at the Pokétopia Skyline intently. When did he get here? She’s not mad at him anymore, of course, but she is surprised that he is voluntarily approaching and talking to her, without her prompting him to.
He moves to look at her, his onyx eyes boring into hers. It takes her a moment to realize that he has his finger outstretched towards a pink building and is talking.
“See that skyscraper?”
She snaps out of her trace and glances at the structure in question. “Y-Yeah, it’s a Lickilicky.”
He nods as his eyes leave hers to look at the building once more. “Look at its tongue.” His finger trails the length of the slanted line. “The yellow line in its tongue is actually the transparent roof of the escalator inside the building.”
Her eyes widen as she sees “Oh, wow, I didn’t even notice that!” Dawn pauses for a moment before she gathers the courage to ask him a question. “Hey, Paul, how do you know so much about this place anyway? Have you been here before?”
“That’s none of your business.”
Dawn huffs at him, and puts her hands on her hips. “Well, your rudeness, I’m sorry for trying to be friendly.” Oh, well. She knows she wouldn’t be able to get Paul to open up so easily, but it was worth a shot.
And so they stand next to each other in silence to stare at the bright, flashing lights of the buildings of the lively city and the spotlight beams waving around in the night sky. Dawn enjoys the night breeze and, surprisingly, Paul’s company, while Paul appreciates the silence between them contently.
After that, they – Paul with his hands in his pockets, and Dawn not having Piplup in her arms for once, since he was sleepy and was put back into his Pokéball – walk back to their rooms together.
Dawn is surprised how pleasant Paul has been. His final battle with Ash must have changed his demeanor significantly.
“Oh!” Dawn suddenly exclaims, as she stops walking. “Ash told me you were going to battle Brandon again. How did your rematch with Brandon go?”
He stops walking as well, and turns to face her. “I lost.”
She frowns, suddenly embarrassed to have asked him at all. “Oh . . . I’m sorry to hear that.”
“I don’t need your pity. My team just wasn’t strong enough.”
She is pensive for a moment, before realization hits her like a brick. “Is that why you’re going to Hoenn? To train more?”
“Among other reasons,” he answers, his face impassive once more, and Dawn feels happy that he’s finally revealing some information about his plans. “Brandon is in Hoenn to work on the Battle Frontier Project. After training my team more, I’ll challenge him there.”
She furrows her eyebrows. “Isn’t the Battle Frontier in the Kanto region, though?” she questions, recalling that Ash fought Brandon in Kanto.
“They’re planning on moving it to the Battle Resort island area in Hoenn.”
“Oh.”
They don’t continue walking to their rooms. Instead, Paul just stands there in silence, lost in thought, while Dawn watches him, pondering as to what he’s thinking about.
“Let’s battle,” he suggests suddenly, causing Dawn to let out a gasp. Did she just hear him correctly?
“Uh, a battle!?” she sputters out. Paul is surely going to win – he is a more powerful trainer than her for sure.
Paul shakes his head. “A contest battle.”
She blinks. “Huh? A contest battle?” It’s nearly 1AM in the morning, and he wants to have a contest battle with her? Is she so tired that she is starting to imagine things? What business would he have in a contest battle with her, anyway?
He groans and slaps a palm to his forehead – he seems to be frustrated by her response. “Forget it.”
“W-Wait, no – ”
Her arm stretches out, trying to reach for him, but he’s already walking away.

Pip Story Chapter Four
Pip rubs her head, her eardrums hurt, and also her throat did too. She wouldn't be able to go over the papers today. That was the last time she was sneaking out. Pip walks out of her room and trips, falling on her face. She sits up. stretching her limbs.
"Mornin', child. Up and movin'?"
Pip grumbles something in response. At least Nuzleaf got some blissful sleep.
"You sure got an earful last night, huh?"
"Yeah, now my head fudging hurts." She was annoyed, cranky, and bitter.
"But, I'm sure Carracosta is just lookin' out for you kids..."
Pip resists the urge to fold her flippers and roll her eyes.
I DO NOT need a huge water type looking out for me. He could fucking crush me like a mashed berry.
"He was probably just worried sick by that stunt you pulled."
The stunt that was not my idea in the first place?
"Have you regained any memories yet?"
"...No."
I lied. I remembered...that my parents don't want me....just because I can't evolve.
"Not even a little, huh...Well, no need to push yourself."
Pip is silent for a few seconds.
"...Hey, Nuzleaf, there's something...I've been meaning to tell you." Pip rocks on her feet anxiously.
"Huh? What is it?"
By the way she answered, maybe she was admitting to lying-
"I hate going on adventures."
"You...hate going on adventures?"
"Y...Yeah. The first day I was here, I honestly was only saving someone, the next one I had to go, I just do not see the appeal. Not to mention they're dangerous, you could end up dying in there and then Pokemon find your bones-"
"O-Okay, Pip slow down. No need to put those kinds of morbid thoughts in my head."
Pip smiles innocently, fixes her green bow that she got a while ago. (Meg that never seen Pip so happy to get the bow.)
Five minutes later Pip was struggling to stay inside.
"It's summer vacation! Why do I need to go outside?"
"Pip, there's nothin' wrong with fresh air."
"I'm allergic."
"No, you're not."
"I don't want to go outside!"
"You can't stay inside and just read all day."
"But the papers are important-"
Nuzleaf finally manages to get the stubborn Piplup outside. "You can go over 'em later."
Pip is startled out of her grumpy attitude when she hears yelling from Lunar and Meg's house.
-
Later that day much to Pip's annoyance, Meg and Lunar popped by to talk to her.
Then apparently Nuzleaf saw Pip 'talking' to them.
"I like seein' certain young kids bein' adventurous and gettin' out there, personally."
Pip smirks knowing very well his 'certain' was referring to her dislike of adventure, she tried to sneak back in the house. Nuzleaf didn't even look at her when he grabbed her flipper to prevent her escape.
"Really? You're totally the opposite of my old pops, then! Do you think he's wrong?"
"I wouldn't say he's wrong, no. He just cares about you, and so he worries."
It must be great having someone who worries about you...
"I'm just not the type to worry much about things. Maybe it's just 'cause I like goin' on adventures myself."
"So where around the village would you like to explore?" Lunar asked.
"Well, I reckon sure I'd sure like to see what lies up Revelation Mountain."
"Revelation Mountain?!" Lunar yelped, Meg also had some objections.
"But that's a sacred mountain! That's a place no one should ever go to!"
"Well, I reckon so...Maybe it's 'cause I'm new to these parts...and I don't rightly know exactly why that mountain's off-limits...but I feel like I oughta be able to at least go have a little look-see."
"Yeah, I know what you mean...But if I went, I'd get the lecture to end all lectures..."
Nuzleaf laughs, "No one said you had to go! All I'm tryin' to say is that you shouldn't lose that sense of curiosity and adventure. And if you really want to keep it alive, sometimes you've gotta be a bit reckless."
-
A few days passed of Meg and Lunar doing their usual adventures.
"Hold up there you two young'uns."
"Huh? Mr. Nuzleaf?"
Pip was standing by him, looking through her bag of papers which seemed to have increased.
"Come on over thisaway."
"What is it Mr. Nuzleaf?!"
Pip flinches at Lunar's outburst.
"Shhh! Keep your voices down! I've just got a little somethin' to run by you two. Come on, this way."
-
"WHAT?! Up Revelation Mountain?!"
"How many ways can I tell you to keep it quiet, child?! We're goin' in secret, naturally, so I'll thank you to keep your voice down!"
"B-But my old Pops told me just yesterday that we absolutely can't go there."
"Yeah, I know that line of thinkin'. But then, I also thought..."
"What?" Lunar questioned anxiously.
"Me. My memories might be linked to Revelation Mountain. That's why we're going up there."
Pip shuffles her papers.
"Revelation Mountain is always surrounded by some mysterious kinda veil. I asked around the village, but everyone insists they don't know nothin' about it. But maybe they do know somethin' and they just keepin' it from me..Either way,I reckon this village has been protectin' some secret up there for ages. That's what my gut tells me."
"You really think it's connected to Pip's memories?!" Lunar was still in shock.
"LUNAR, think, is for simple Pokemon, I prefer might, it's a word of power." Pip huffed, rolling her eyes.
"So, we're just going to have a peek around. If it looks dangerous, we'll turn back."
In the end, Pip convinced Lunar and Meg to come with them.
-
Pip looks at her paper that had Pokemon who would on guard and notes which said what guard would be easiest to get rid of. And just like she thought, Hippopotas was on guard.
"Just like I thought."
"Um, excuse me, Pip," Meg frowns, "how did you know Hippopotas was going to be on guard?"
The Piplup scoffs. "Because I observed the days."
That's...strange. Why would Pip care to note who would be on guard?
Maybe she did it to find out if she really did have a connection to the mountain.
"So what is your plan and why does it matter on which guard?" Meg raises an eyebrow.
Pip pockets her paper. "Just stand back and watch."
Nuzleaf comes out from hiding behind the crate to Hippopotas.
All it took was a lie from Nuzleaf?
Pip seemed able to read Meg's thoughts.
"Of course! Lies are great, you tell one, the Pokemon buys it and you walk away, lie accomplished."
Meg had to wonder if Pip has ever lied to them with that logic.
-
"Uh oh...This was not in my papers."
The sheriff and the Pokemon guarding is apparently an outcome Pip never saw coming.
"Ugh, I guess we have no choice but to turn back." She almost sighed too loudly.
-
Time passed and Meg, Lunar got a surprise visit from Nuzleaf. (It was mostly a surprise because Pip was there too)
Meg couldn't help from noticing...Pip putting one of her blades away, that had blood on it.
Hopefully she didn't attack someone.
Pip said SHE was popping by to give them supplies she found that they might find useful. While she was traveling with Mr. Nuzleaf, because...
"Wait, you came to the village because Pokemon called Beheeyem attacked you?"
"Yeah, I heard they were outside the village, but I never saw them. I don't really remember how I got to the village. I just know there were Beheeyem and blood. I think a nurse said I was lucky to be alive, so long story short, Beheeyem tried to kill me and I was saved." Pip didn't seem scared every time she mentioned the Beheeyem...just annoyed.
Maybe it was just Meg, but she would be more scared than annoyed if Pokemon tried to kill her.
-
Pip stamps her foot as she waits. Staring at the blue barrier. She pokes it again, but of course it did nothing. She just wasn't...
"Over there!"
"What in the world is Pip doing here?"
Lunar pants from the running. "Good thing she didn't get turned to stone...."
"What in the world is that though?!" Pip was standing in front of a blue thing.
"It's a barrier if you must know." The Piplup responds to her question...as if she rehearsed it and not simply answering a question.
"Waters springing up from the ground...is this...a spring?"
Pip nods instead of rolling her eyes.
Lunar runs over to a stone thing with writing on it. "What's this?"
"That there's a stone tablet. I reckon it's pretty old."
"Can anyone read it?" Pip finally glances over at them.
"...I can."
Everyone minus Pip are shocked at his simple statement.
"You?! Really?!"
"Yeah, 'Should you hope to overcome-"
Archen interrupts him, "Hold on a second! How are you able to stand there and read it like its no big deal?!"
"I don't know. But, I promise, I can read it. Anyway, 'Should you hope to overcome this crisis, summon an aqua. The aqua will have the power to break the barrier over the spring. You must summon an aqua.'"
"An aqua?" Meg slowly processed this.
"It's referring to a water type." Pip droned. "And before you ask, yes I tried to break it-"
"Hold on, WHY were you trying to break it?" The barrier had to be protecting something.
"Because...I'm suspecting...this water can be used to overcome the crisis."
Just then they got a call from someone Pip didn't know but she heard them say the Pokemon's name and...the way to bring the stone Pokemon back.
"Anyway, I couldn't break it. So I'm not the aqua. But maybe Meg can break it."
"How am I suppose to break it?"
"Hey, you there"
They all turn to see Krookodile.
"He's coming!"
Meg thought when the two other legendary pokemon appeared...that was the distraction. But Krookodile ignored them and kept coming...mumbling something.
'This wasn't part of the deal.'
"We had a deal. Where's the money?!"
"Money?" Meg whispered, beyond confused.
"Meg! Get that there barrier open!"
"OR I will use force!" Pip snapped, reasonably upset that Meg was just standing there.
What is this feeling? Meg looks down at her hands.
"MEG!" Lunar yelled.
"Hurry!"
Well, Pip was true to her word, she roughly shoved Meg against the barrier.
It broke.
"You did it! There goes the barrier!" Lunar's eyes sparkled.
"Well in a WAY Pip helped." Meg squints at Pip.
...
"You can't turn anyone else to stone thanks to this water!" The Charmander shouts, feeling victory in his chest as he glares at Krookodile.
"What are you talking about? I just want my money! We had a deal! I dropped those warnings, just like you asked...I came here because you told me to! Right Nuzleaf?!"
Everyone froze in shock...except Pip.
"I still think you should've let me stab him." Pip scoffs, folding her flippers.
"Huh?!"
Nuzleaf begins to laugh in a way that no one has heard him laugh before. "I reckon the time has come! I finally done broke the barrier!"
Well, I pushed Meg so technically I broke it, but whatever makes you feel better Nuzleaf.
"You done good, Krookodile! I reckon you've earned your reward!"
Pip covers her head as Nuzleaf lets out a dark looking power at the red pokemon.
"Wh-What's happening?!"
Turning him to stone.
"Krookodile turned to stone!"
It soon was revealed Nuzleaf was the turning the Pokemon to stone.
Meg had no clear proof but those papers...Pip carried were...probably information.
The days and times Pokemon were on guard, Pip was noting it to get up to the spring.
"Of course! Lies are great, you tell one, the Pokemon buys it and you walk away, lie accomplished."
Guess Pip has lied to Pokemon before.
They thought they could grab the water even though Nuzleaf might turn them to stone or since Pip had no empathy in her small body she might stab someone. Meg did not expect this huge bird to come out of nowhere...and...darkness.
-
Pip is not turned to stone (if no one has figured out) is because she is very useful with information. She is being used for information.

Let’s give a round of applause for this season’s coaches as they will spend the next 15 weeks (then playoffs) battling it out to determine who is the PDL Season 2 Champion!
I’ve announced the coaches in their pick order for the draft. Quick recap: The PDL drafts in a snake style format where pick will go 1-24 for Round 1, then 24-1 for Round 2, with this alternating every round for 10 rounds. I know a lot of the coaches have already started strategizing what they would like to draft and how they think things will play out. Now that the pick order has been released, most of the planing gets scrapped and you can revise your strategy from what is most likely to be available. For example if you are pick 24 in the draft, it is very unlikely that Tapu Koko will still be up for grabs, so you should probably not plan your draft around not getting Tapu Koko. However, if you are in one of the first spots, you only need to have a couple of Round 1 picks planned and there are quite a bit of very powerful R1 picks, so choose wisely!
How to create a good backup plan
It is almost inevitable that in a 24-person draft league that you will be sniped when trying to pick a Pokemon. It happens to everyone, and the better prepared you are for those snipes, the better your draft will turn out. This starts  with a good plan. Let’s say you want to complete that famous Fire-Water-Grass core, and you already have a Fire- and Water-type, and there is a good 30ish picks before your chance to take a good Grass-type. Depending on the draft and how many people have their own Grass-type, they might start all start getting grabbed. There is a trend in draft leagues once one person starts branching out into a popular type or role, everyone follows suit to try and get the next best option for their team. To avoid panicking and making a bad choice, it is always a good idea to list down all the viable Pokemon of the given type you are trying to get by their tiers. This way in the draft you can see which ones get taken and what still remains for you.
So you want that Grass-type and let’s say Shaymin was your top option and that gets taken, but  you still have the option of Roserade in the same tier. However, right after Shaymin someone else snags up Roserade. The top 2 on your list are gone, however you can still get Decidueye, which you have placed at your third spot. The person right before you takes Decidueye… what are you going to do? Luckily, pokemon has given us a plentiful amount of grass types over the years so there are many options still available like; Dhelmise, Whimsicott, Tsareena and if you decide to branch into T2/T4 there are more options like Breloom, and Rotom-M. The more you prepare what other mons you can take to fill the roles you want the better your draft will go. You will be able to make your pick, both with something that fills the roles and without the sense of panic that draft day can be infamous for.
Interview with Commissioner Ozzy
Clod9: Welcome Ozzy and thank you for taking the time to answer some questions about the PDL. To start, You have been around since the beta draft, and over the course of Beta to Season 2 of PDL there have been a lot of changes between Mons getting put in different tiers, new mons being added and different rules. What would you say has been the biggest change to PDL since beta?
Ozzy: Starting with the big question!  I was there at the start only as a coach initially, I wanted to get better at battling and saw that as an excellent opportunity, which it was. The beta then evolved into the PDL we know now. The most obvious and biggest change in my opinion is the number of coaches. In the beta there was only 8. We then triple that for season 1. This became interesting to manage in season 1 but for the most part we had excellent coaches that were keen to compete every week.
C9: I know there has been a lot of comments on the tiers, for those that think something is mistiered, what would you say is the best way for them to get their voice heard? (You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to)
OZ:The tiers have changed. To start with we used an existing template originally for the Beta and Season 1. We have tried to make things fair for both the experienced coaches and new coaches, finding that balance is hard. I am still relatively new to draft format and even battling so I do rely on the other commissioners to make the really hard tier decisions. After Season 1 we published a survey for coaches to voice their opinions to improve the season and I took the time to read them all. Some changes will reflect their opinions. But at some point we have to accept we can’t make everyone happy, but we try. Unfortunately by the time this article comes out I can see it will be too late to make any changes. But maybe we may take in any additions, there is no harm in asking. PM me to get that pokeball rolling.
C9:Much isnt know about the Beta league; how did you do/ what kind of team did you draft?
OZ: First rule of Beta League, you don’t talk about Beta League……….
Well fortunately I still hold the Beta Hub that I can refer to for this question.  I do remember that we actually did the draft over like 1 week, for 8 guys! It felt like it would take forever. I would be submitting my choices whilst walking the dog sometimes!
So I was relatively inexperienced to battling at the Beta, actually ‘relatively’ is a complement. So the type of team was a collection of mons the did not necessary have any synergy and if they did, I didn’t know it.
M-Gyarados
Garchomp
Mamoswine
Tangrowth
Dusknoir
Raichu
Victini
Crobat
Togetic
Registeel
The beauty of having only 8 coaches is the amount of mons available to you. And now looking at the team it wasn’t to bad a team. I ended up 6th with 4 wins and 4 losses with a 0 differential so I couldn’t complain about that performance either
C9: How did that team vary between beta and last season?
OZ: So season 1 team consisted of:
Garchomp
Slowbro
M-Mawile
Uxie
Breloom
Torkoal
Electivire
Chatot
Scolipede
Regirock
Garchomp was a favorite of mine in the Beta so wanted that straight away and I like the bulk of the Regi’s. Rest of the team was different and I tried to create a balanced team. I was happy with this bunch of mons though they did me well, even Chatot got some kills.
C9: You drafted Registeel and Regirock the last two seasons, can we expect a Regice this season?
OZ: Quiet possibly……
C9: It seems like you have learned a lot and improved drastically since Beta to Season 2, how do you think you will fair going up against some new coaches and some returning veterans?
OZ: Well I suppose I have, but when you have 0 experience the only way is up!  I am a big believer in learning from your mistake and I made a lot of them! But more importantly, members of the community were a great in help, providing me with advice and tips before during and after battles. I don’t accept to be winning the crown in season 2 but I am aiming for playoffs this season! The biggest thing for me though is to enjoy myself.  Even if it ends in a loss, as long as I had fun that’s what counts. Cheesy but true!
C9: I know last season that you just missed playoffs by tiebreakers. Does that sting or is it just more motivation to go for it next season?
OZ: No it didn’t sting. I started off the season poorley and to get to a possible playoff spot was a real surprise. I couldn’t have asked for a better finish.
C9: What was your favorite mon on your team?
OZ: Well I want to say Garchomp but thats an obvious answer and slightly boring. M-Mawile interested me during the summer league.  A certain gym leader had one and I would always find myself having a hard time with it. So I wanted her for the PDL. Mandy was a good lass, with me at the helm she managed 8 kills.  Looking through the data though Garchomp got 10. So Georgina wins it.
C9: Would you share one of your craziest sets that you ran in PDL and if it worked?
OZ: Not running EQ on Electivire! I’m still learning sets and going crazy seemed a bit too ambitious last season. Maybe this season I will feel more confident.  One of my proudest prepared mons was a Taunt, Nasty Plot, Heat Wave chatot. I won’t bore you with the battle but it was one of the battles commentated on the YouTube channel.
C9: You also do a lot of the behind the scenes work with the doc, which looks amazing by the way, did you learn to do that on your own or did you have prior training beforehand?
OZ: Why thank you. Not really, apart from usual stuff I got taught at school many years back. It has been mainly self taught with some assistance. I had looked through other examples to point me in the right direction. I enjoyed making it though.  Even the hub evolved during season1 which I have yourself to thank for. This season I have made some improvements so it runs smoother as well. Even potential new segments for PDL coaches and non PDL coaches to take part in.
C9: Ok lets learn about you as a pokemon Fan. When did you start listening to PUCL?
OZ: It will be about 1 and a half years now I reckon.
C9: What pokemon generation did you start with?
OZ: Gen 1!!!! However I didn’t play Gen 3 – 5. I only got back into it at the back end of Gen 6.
C9: What is your favorite region?
OZ: Kanto, probably for nostalgic reasons.
C9: Who is your favorite pokemon?
OZ: Arcanine. I love dogs and that was the first dog pokemon I came across.  Well growlithe was but Arcanine is bigger!
C9: If you had to pick: Attack or Special Attack?
OZ: Attack,  There is that saying, the best form of defense is attack.
C9: What is your battle style:  Stall/Hyper Offense/Bulky Offense/Balance?
OZ: I have a new style its called hyper confused. Both me and the opponent can’t figure it it!
C9: Do you prefer Speed or Trick Room?
OZ: Speed
C9: What is your favorite Weather; Hail/Sand/Rain or Sun?
OZ: Living in the UK it always rains so not that! I would like the Sun. No actually that doesn’t work either that can get uncomfortable. It’s snowing here at the moment so hail isn’t my favorite. However sand brings back bad memories, it get everywhere! So the winner is……. A nice spring day. That ability is coming in Gen 8.
