Because the whole Tuvix wank is rearing its head every week on Trek forums, I finally decided to rewatch this episode. I mostly avoided it because I am So Tired of the wank and how it's been relitigated for YEARS.
I was over it when it first popped up and I was even more over it with the way it's used as a bludgeon to promote 'psycho Janeway'.
But what's left out in the discussions is Kes's part in all of this, from the jump, Kes was troubled with the merging of Neelix and Tuvok, and anytime Tuvix tried to make advances, she just kept getting more uncomfortable.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(When Tuvix unconsciously touched Kes's shoulder, it looked like she had to consciously not flinch.)
To Tuvix's credit, he did give Kes space and respected her wishes but she was not happy with the whole merge because her relationship with Neelix and Tuvok is different.
We don't see the other people grieve but we see Kes's grief and confusion, which was shared by Janeway. But also, the moment the EMH had a solution to separate the two people in Tuvix, Harry jumped at the chance.
And he's already spent weeks with Tuvix.
The irony is that Janeway was coming around to thinking of Tuvix as an individual but the cure presented itself, but also as the Ship's Captain she has an obligation to care for her crew and absent or not that meant advocating for the two voices who couldn't speak up: Tuvok and Neelix.
Kes was the deciding factor. Kes made her plea to separate Neelix and Tuvok.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kes was the biggest reason why Janeway decided to separate Tuvok from Neelix.
It was such a cop-out from the Doctor that he refused to do the procedure he made and pioneered. And forced Janeway to execute it instead.
Tumblr media
Janeway is clearly not happy about the decision and she's caught between a rock and a hard place.
In Nothing Human Janeway verbalizes it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Any consequences of this decision will be my responsibility. Dismissed."
Janeway's constantly put into a wheelhouse of trolley problems, as the only high-ranking Starfleet officer, she is the final authority. In Nothing Human everyone is locked in an endless debate about the morality of using the Cardassians' methods to save B'Elanna's life. Meanwhile, the clock was running down to zero and B'Elanna could have died more.
(Honestly, the story should have been more B'Elanna, Doctor, and Janeway-centric than it was. Nothing Human is a weird episode. Especially since Seven was barely in it and seems to be the Acting Chief Engineer -- amusingly enough because the writers thought they killed Joe Carey between s2 and 3. Alas, poor Vorik, he's not getting any promotions either).
TLDR: Janeway is constantly living through what the Doctor of Doctor Who is living through. Or as the 12th Doctor once said: "Sometimes the only choices you have are bad ones, but you still have to choose."

not sure how to phrase this but something i have been ruminating on recently is that xue yang is strangely fragile. obviously he is also incredibly resilient. he survived, and continues to survive, impossible things. he has a million barriers between himself and the world, but none of this actually matters when it comes to what he feels. everything is personal to him. everything pierces straight through all that armor and goes right to his battered heart, the heart that no one else believes he has. that even he is not fully cognizant of. the world strikes and strikes and strikes and so he strikes and strikes and strikes back, even (especially) when the wound is something other people would not think worthy of retribution.
xue yang would never realize this- would be outraged at the concept of it- but the way everything, everything is something to rally a defense against is in itself a form of fragility. he does not know how to let go of things, or let them pass him by. passivity is death. so he is ruthlessly cruel and violent. he projects himself as a lunatic untouchable by anything you might possibly do to him, and on some level he even believes this. but in actuality he is one raw emotional wound. he never learned to separate himself from his emotions, much less process them. the volatility is not so much insanity as it is the constant lashing out of an animal in a trap, and the trap is the world, and the trap is himself, and he is never going to get out. and like so much else, this pain is just part of the background radiation of his life. it hardly registers. to be able to register the hurt, you would have to be able to register a time in which you were not hurt.
i feel like it is a fragility that could blossom into such tenderness, given exactly the right set of circumstances. how at the very first touch of softness in his life he fell into a domesticity from which he never recovered. how much was there, still, to be salvaged from the cruelty. on some level i am always thinking about the little apple bunnies. about the meal for daozhang and the straw in a-qing's bed.
it was too little, too late. it shattered like glass when the world intruded back in. but the tenderness was there. no one, least of all xue yang, knows what might have happened had it been unearthed in him any sooner.
#he is easy to hurt. this is a fact. it is also anathema to his own self conception as well as the model of him in anyone elses minds.#xue yang#yi city#mdzs#aphelion.txt#xy#Contact is crisis; every touch is a modified blow#<- xycore anne carson quote. if you even care#meta#i guess? idk#it is always character analysis hour in my head#with a disclaimer that whether or not someone experiences empathy is NOT correlated to their morality#i dont think its necessarily that xy is incapable of empathy it's that any empathy that might exist in him is deeply deeply repressed#bc he views it as a death warrant. he (at every moment in his head and really quite often in reality) is on trial for his life#and it would be suicidal to give a shit about anyone who is not him.#especially since he knows- down to his bones- that no one is ever going to give a shit about him EXCEPT FOR him#the one chance he ever got to escape this cycle of brutality came with an expiration date built in by consequence of his past atrocities#and he only first started to comprehend anything about his own emotions after it was all already irrevocably fucked#in canon he is doomed. in fandom i am always picking him up and putting him somewhere kinder#shakes you by the shoulders do you understand what he does to me. do you. do you#if you tell me im excusing his crimes i will kill you w my lazer beam.#this isnt ABOUT THAT. this is ME BEING UNHINGED ABT HIS PSYCHOLOGY in a moral vaccuum.#i'm not saying 'hes sensitive uwu' but like i kind of am. unfortunately it mostly just motivates him to murder people#OH and when i connect the fragility to the tenderness i dont mean that i believe hes like. secretly soft#i mean that being as he is so deeply impacted by people's slights against him. he is just as deeply impacted by people's kindnesses#and he's not incapable of reciprocating it. he is INCREDIBLY fucking bad at it. but not incapable#ok i have to post this before i feel compelled to ramble any longer in the tags. jesus#got consumed by my a-yang feelings on a sunday morning sorry#not sure why i worded it as 'continues to survive' other than a constant subconscious denial that xue yang is dead

Very long post so I’m putting it under the cut. Analysis of Tobey trying to figure out WordGirl’s identity.
When Tobey brought up “Cash or Pie” in the first episode of WordGirl (Tobey or Consequences), he was making a callback to the episode The Wrath of Tobey from The Amazing Colossal Adventures of WordGirl (the shorts about WordGirl before it became an actual full show), the third episode from the trilogy about the day WordGirl met him for the first time (the first two being Play Date and Tobey or Not Tobey). That show was on tv on the same day he accused Becky of being WordGirl, she used it as an example of a hullabaloo. But it might not have just been a callback for observant viewers, what if him confirming that WordGirl is familiar with Cash or Pie was part of him putting together that she is becky? What if he's 24/7 trying to prove that, even when not in an episode about figuring it out and being convinced he was wrong?
This happened once in the previously mentioned episodes of The Amazing Colossal Adventures of WordGirl, and once in WordGirl. It’s in my memory that in other episodes he’s been suspicious of Becky being WordGirl even if he doesn't make an explicit accusation, but upon rewatching episodes I thought had this happen, he simply makes confused remarks and completely believes Becky’s excuses, so unless it happens in other ones I forgot about, this may be a false memory. He is still, however. the only one who ever deduces that Becky is WordGirl, possibly because he is the only with a personal relationship with both, also he stalks WordGirl but it’s also a testimate to his intelligence.
You may be tempted to mention how Dr. Two Brains figured it out once, but that only happened because he made a giant ear to listen in on cheese-related conversations and accidentally heard her talking about her identity, it was by complete luck. And while Violet and Scoops have found out, both only did so because they saw Becky transform into WordGirl, and Becky admitted to it after being asked about it, they didn’t figure it out.
Tobey, however, deduced it completely on his own, and his 'Prove Becky is WordGirl' plans are always quite smart: trap becky with him while he has his robots attacking the city, which forces her into only having the options of revealing her identity and saving the city, or letting it get crushed by robots, but the in the latter the fact WordGirl wouldn’t show up would make her seem pretty dang suspicious anyway (see later paragraph). Both times they get out of it by having Huggy pretend to be her.
The first time they were in her front yard, close by in a small space where Tobey didn’t have his eyes locked on her, so she had Huggy go in dressed as WordGirl. This made him look over at Huggy, thinking WordGirl was there and Becky was still next to him, thinking Becky and WordGirl were both present, then she quickly flew over and defeated the robot before flying back beside Tobey as Becky, completing the ruse.
The second time, By Jove You’ve Wrecked My Robots!, Tobey was no longer a stranger to Becky, it’s almost scary seeing how smart he got, he took the time to go over every detail of their last encounter with the argument, he thought of everything. The robots were really far away, and Tobey was keeping his full attention on Becky. He knew trickery was up, so he didn’t take his eyes off her for a second, except for when he went to the bathroom, but that would have been an opportunity for Becky to transform into WordGirl, so if the robots had been defeated while he was in there he probably would have brought it up as further evidence.
He eventually brings up how he now has proof that Becky is WordGirl, since even though the city was full of robots, WordGirl hadn’t shown up to fight them, “…the only reason that she wouldn’t is if she couldn’t leave her own living room without getting caught by me!” He set up a situation where he had multiple chances to prove Becky was WordGirl, and any time things stacked up it only made it clearer for him. When Huggy was heard taking down robots while they talked (so Becky could again seem to be in two places at once), he CORRECTLY GUESSES the situation, “That’s probably just your annoying sidekick fighting my robits!,” and when Becky replies “How do you know?,” He replies, “Well, I realized that this might be a problem,” and we find out he even put cameras up on his robots, because he somehow figured out that last time Huggy had been involved. The only reason they were able to get out of this was by WordGirl and Huggy somehow figuring out he had those cameras, so while Huggy defeated the robots he put a wordgirl doll up to the cameras so it seemed like she was there. It even had a pullstring catchphrase, which helped sell it. A year or so of meticulous planning thwarted by a doll.
Watching the episodes Play Date, Tobey or Not Tobey, The Wrath of Tobey, Tobey or Consequences, and By Jove You’ve Wrecked My Robots! back to back really puts into perspective just how smart Tobey is.
I’d also like to bring up the added genius that this analysis reveals in the WordGirl fanfiction Saving Tobey by Night N. Gail (available on fanfic.net and AO3).
(Spoilers, by the way. It’s incredible, I absolutely recommended reading it, as well as its sequel Time To Go Home, and their technical prequel Captain’s Log which is really just a prequel to all of WordGirl so it’s not really relevant to the fanfic plot.)
------ Spoiler Prevention Line! ------
When Tobey finally actually found out WordGirl’s secret identity, he used basically the same tactic, but the differences were that this time they were in his house, and Huggy wasn’t there to help, which trapped Becky so much more and actually forced her to reveal herself. I won’t go into such in-depth analysis of how he did it, but changing the factors of location and Huggy availability being all he needed to outsmart her is incredible, finally he’s been able to think of every single little detail and he has her in his clutches. It’s completely understandable how terrified Becky was of what he’d do with the information, only a criminal mastermind goes to that level. But in this case it was just a smart little boy with a creepily obsessive crush.
Smart fucking author, I tell you. What an absolutely correct choice on how to have him figure it out. Read this fic, man, fuck it’s good. There’s a reason that guy keeps trying the same tactic, he knows he’s so close, so to have him continue it but get it RIGHT this time?! It feels so good. THAT’S the Tobey move right there. If the show had continued, even if it was overall written differently, I really hope he would’ve figured it out and done so in this way, it is so completely perfect. Do you even understand how much this fic and character and show matter?

Slapped in the fucking face by the concept of Dr. Kogami starting the Hanoi Project and subsequently creating the Ignis to cure Ryoken of an illness.
Like imagine. His wife is gone, his only remaining family left is his son. He'd promised on his wife's deathbed he'd protect their son in her place too and make sure he grows up happy.
Then Ryoken's health starts declining. And the symptoms are hauntingly familiar.
Turns out what took his wife is about to take their son too, the child she loved more than anything. If she were still alive, it would devastate her.
And Kogami, on the verge of despair and about to lose everything, decides no. Not again. Not their child, still so young. He will do anything, so long as it saves Ryoken's life. Even the unspeakable.
He didn't account for Ryoken hearing the children's cries.
And the guilt Ryoken carries now. The Lost Incident happened because of him. All those kids were abducted and tortured because of him. Then his father was taken away only to return home three years later in a coma. Becase of him.
And now his dad, his only family, is asking him to use the life given to him to right the mistake Kogami made.
And what else can he do but fulfill that request no matter what when this is all his fault to begin with.
Sidenotes:
While his life is no longer at risk, Ryoken still feels the effects of his illness. His immune system is garbage, achy muscles, gets short of breath easily, dizzy spells. But while this matters little in Link Vrains, Ryoken would still rather be outside in the real world.
Spectre helped take care of Ryoken after the latter took him in, still in the middle of recovering. He's now hyper aware of Ryoken's health as a result.
Ryoken met Yusaku when he snuck out of the house. He was allowed out very rarely for fear he'll get worse, and even then never by himself, but the adults are rarely free to go with him, so he sometimes sneaked out. After he almost collapses outside, Yusaku walks him home. Ryoken stopped sneaking out after that.
On the more positive side Ryoken definitely knows the importance of treasuring life after thinking he was going to die as a child and at some point getting so ill he struggled leaving bed.

fic snippet (thomastair)
Alastair draws himself a hot bath when instructed in the next few notes, being liberal with the perfumed salts Thomas left out and losing himself in the heady scent of lavender. He continues to read—careful not to get the book wet in the process—until his toes are pruned and the water turns cold. He changes into the fresh pyjamas folded neatly on their bed after finding another by the towel he dries himself with, and he slides under the covers after he finds what he assumes is the final note of this elaborate event:
I hope you are feeling refreshed and thoroughly relaxed, mi amor. Now rest. Cast aside all your woes and allow the night take you on a grand adventure amongst the stars.
But there is just one final thing I’d like you to do. My final request.
Dance with me when I return from patrol?
It takes everything in him not to squeal like a little schoolgirl, and his voice is strangled as he whispers at the paper, ‘God, I love you, Tom.’ He raises it to his lips and kisses it. ‘Of course I’ll dance with you.’
With that, Alastair switches off the lamp and settles against the pillow, making sure to hold that little piece of paper over his heart. Moonlight streams through the curtain and onto the bed, silvery and bright, and he closes his eyes.
The grandfather clock downstairs fulfils its duty once again. It chimes through the silent house, a verbose sound.
One o’clock, it says. Definitely past bedtime, it says.
      But Alastair cannot sleep.
Never mind Thomas’s sweet request to dance when he returns home, as much as it presses at his mind. He wishes to be against Thomas, to feel his hands on his waist and to hear his heartbeat in his ear as they sway in each other’s arms, and his body aches for it.
But he wants Thomas home safe and well and in bed with him more.
~
no graphic this time as this is a spontaneous decision, but here, have a little sneak peek into the historic valentine's day thomastair fic i'm working on :>

If I could give one piece of advice to young, teen artists, it wouldn't be about what to do better or what to avoid in their drawing practice, it would be this:
Get in the habit of putting the date on your sketchbook page when you're done with it.
If you do one drawing per page, you know what date you drew it. If you do many doodles per page, you know you did them between that date and the date on the last page.
It may all be easy to know off the top of your head right now, but ten years from now - yes, it's a long time but, by god, it will pass - you will wonder when exactly you drew that drawing.
If I could give a second piece of advice, it would be to never fully destroy a drawing that you actually put effort into. Doodles, sure. If you don't care about them, didn't put any real effort into them, whatever. But, if you sat down and put care and effort into a drawing - even a little bit - keep it. If you have too many notebooks, keep only the special hardcopies and scan the ones that don't matter as much.
If you're like me as a teenager, and you go into your art once every year or so and look through it all, you might get tired of it Once a year seems infrequent when you're 15. That same feeling of infrequency will require 3 years when you're 25. A year will seem like nothing.
So, when you get to the point where you're tired of seeing these same drawings over and over and judging yourself for your lower skill level, when you're tempted to delete the scans or toss out the originals, do not.
If they're hardcopies you're tempted to get rid of, scan them. If they're digital, simply make a folder called "The Vault" and send them there to die temporarily. You can pretend they're gone and quit looking at the same drawings you don't like much anymore. But, after ten years, when you're longing for the physical evidence that you were once a child, once less skilled than you are now, once more naive than you are now, they will be there, waiting for you.
25 may feel like an eternity from now, but when it arrives, 15 will feel like an eternity behind you. Don't let those early works that you poured hours of your days into slip away into the unforgiving void of time.
They matter. Your history matters.
It might not feel like it in the present, but nothing ever does. A boring old dining chair from 1700 might have been an unconcerning thing to leave in the shed to rot when it was 1700 but, in decent condition now, would be worth hundreds or thousands of dollars.
Monetary value may not come into it when it's a pencil sketch from junior high, but when you're older, you will become a collector of your own history, scraping up everything you can find like an auction-goer spending their whole paycheck on a fancy, handmade chair they feel compelled to save from the forgetfulness of human memory.
