Kana and Ruby were desperate to be seen by Aqua/Goro. Meanwhile, Akane sought to see—understand—the real Aqua.
Aqua shines the spotlight on Kana to save her from her bad habits. He does the same for Ruby, freeing her from her burden.
The manga puts a lot of emphasis on the way Goro was Ruby's light, on the way Aqua brought out Kana's radiance. We're shown that Sarina wants to marry him, that Kana wanted to be his idol. Despite this, neither is privy to the burden Aqua is carrying.
With Aqua and Akane, the manga paints a different picture: It actually allows Akane to get involved. Aqua saved her life and ever since she has been doing her best to save his heart in turn.
What's more: Goro has been saving people all along, but Akane is the one the manga has actively taking mesures to return the favor.

For a show that's supposedly about female empowerment, it's odd how every major female character is heavily influenced by men
Women whose fighting styles are based on men: Ruby (Qrow), Yang (Tai), Cinder (Rhodes)
Women whose ideologies are based on men: Weiss (opposition to Jacques), Blake (same as Ghira)
Women whose stories are almost completely intertwined with men: Nora (personal arc was figuring out who she was without Ren), Pyrrha (almost every scene with her prior to V3 was with Jaune), Emerald (almost every scene prior to v8 was shared with Mercury), Salem (motivated by Ozma's death, cursed by idiot brothers)
If the writing cast reflected the character cast, we probably wouldn't have this problem

obsessed w the way they explicitly state that stewy is kendall’s “third oldest friend”. like. they could easily have made the betrayals seem more significant in kendall’s life and generally more dramatic if they’d said stewy was his oldest friend, or just not specified. and it’s not like the viewer ever gets to know who kendall’s oldest and second oldest friends are. so it was completely unnecessary if not for the sole purpose of making it all a little bit awkward. toning down the drama just the right amount. “you’re my third oldest friend. you fucked me like a tied goat.” that’s so funny to me i’m sorry

i've talked about this before, but the introduction of the hound and what it stands for re: silver eyes after we learned more about them during the conversation ruby and maria had in argus is so, so good.
the light is fueled by the desire to preserve life. that is how ruby manages to use her powers; she wants to protect her friends.
but it only works against grimm, the darkness incarnate, the opposite of light. and that's where the hound comes in: what do you do when the darkness incarnate has light within it? are you going to use the light to destroy the very life it is meant to preserve? is there even preserving that life anymore, or is it already dead, only kept alive by the darkness? and wouldn't that be twisted, when it is the darkness that is preserving that life, in a very bastardized way?
it is quite a dilemma to have, more so when you add cinder—who was mentioned by ruby in her conversation with maria—into the mix. ruby already almost killed cinder once, on top of the beacon tower, with her light, which led to—incidentally—cinder becoming even more grimm—certainly more visibly so.
maria says that the only way ruby can get practice in is by "trial by fire", which is mostly about using her powers to protect people against the grimm, but i think there's a double meaning afoot that has to do with the purpose behind the light:
if there's any chance of helping those who have met the same fate as the hound and it's something ruby's willing to do (and why wouldn't she?), then the first step towards that goal is cinder—and because the light is meant to preserve life against the darkness, it does not lead to cinder's death like it almost did the first time around.
like. c'mon. this is a storyline that has been set-up since the very last episode of V3 and it's steadily coming along and watching it happen in real time is somehow mind-boggling to me. like they're really going for it. this is happening, where else would it lead with all this build-up, with the pieces they've got so far?
yes yes this is me basically being amazed at basic storytelling but after getting burnt by one too many shock twists, it should be allowed.

I finally started working on a reference model for Ruby!! I don't think I've quite finalised the outfit yet, but I'm fairly happy with what I have so far, at least~
As a reminder, Ruby is my fankid for my selfship with Pyra, so she's the daughter of Pyra and Sapphire! She's very energetic and chaotic - a friend of mine kept referring to her as "little menace (affectionate)" when I was talking through design ideas with her, and that's definitely very accurate to her personality =P She's best friends with Poppi and Ursula, and her grandad (i.e. Vandham) absolutely dotes on her, hehe. So would a fair amount of the rest of the cast, I imagine!
I'm not going to use my tag list for this render since it isn't exactly a full thing (it's just for showing off the model, haha), but I am going to tag my friend @artificervaldi for inspiring me to work on this this evening, if that's alright. Thank you for your kind words, B!~
