1. Hello, I have lost a fic! It was an arranged-marriage au where WWX marries into the Lan sect. During the wedding all the Lans refuse to look towards WWX which hurts him deeply. Later on LWJ explains it is Lan tradition for no one to look upon the bride until the husband has removed her veil. This was just one of many cultural differences between the Lan and Jiang that the fic explored. Overall I think the fic was kind of somber and angsty? Probably had a happy ending though. Any ideas?

2. Hello, I need help finding a fic. I'm pretty sure I found this fic through your blog.

It's from Lan Wangji's perspective and takes place during the early sunshot campaign before Wei Wuxian's return. Wen outposts are attacked by some unknown entity and Lan Wangji goes to investigate. The culprit is a human shaped being covered in resentful energy. After a few confrontations Lan Wangji discovers that the being is an unconscious Wei Wuxian and finds a way to free him from the resentful energy. @bluekittenfire

4. Hi! I’m sorry to bother you, but maybe you can help me? I’m looking for a fic where Wei Wuxian is fighting at what I remember to be Qiongqi Path. I think Jiang Cheng makes a smart remark (something like “Are you just gonna play your flute or you going to help us?!”) and Wei Wuxian stops playing his dizi long enough to give JC the finger… only for them to realise what it means that he’s stopped playing and a flute can still be heard. Not long after LWJ pulls Su She out of the foliage with the other flute.

Vaguely I remember it being a fix it fic where less people die than in canon.

5. hi!! i’m been looking for a fic for days. i read it forever ago but it’s during the cloud recess study arc and in it lan xichen realizes how awful the jiangs are treating wwx and tries to subtly convince him to leave tywng and stay in gusu bc he knows how much lwj likes him and he sees how talented wwx is and knows he would be a good asset for any sect to have. a specific scene i remember is that lxc would pretend to accidentally bump into wwx to talk to him. and they would go on walks and lwj saw it and got jealous. i think lxc was lowkey manipulative but in a way where he was doing it to make wwx care enough about himself to leave the jiangs. it was not jiang clan friendly at all. i kno this is so vague sorry about that. but it’s driving me crazy how i can’t find it when i know ive read it more then once. thanks for any help u can give

It sounds like the last extra chapter. / Not saying there isn't a fic involving it, but #14 sounds a lot like the Yunmeng extra in book five, as well. Ring toss, ugly turtle statue, and Wei Wuxian considering pranking Lan Qiren included. The only difference is the location. Your searcher may have mistaken it for fic, especially if they read translations online. / #14 is one of the extra chapters from the actual novel (Extra 7 in the official English translation)

Summary: Wen Qing would probably never know who their nameless cultivator used to be, or what kind of secret grief he hides beneath his bowed shoulders. But the man makes Wei Wuxian smile, in a way he doesn't anymore after Lan Wangji refused to stay for dinner and never visited again. And perhaps, surrounded by death and resentment as they are, perhaps that's enough. After wandering the realm for years in the wake of his wife's death, Qingheng-Jun came to the Burial Mounds - And stayed. Kay's comments: Qingheng-Jun/Wei Wuxian is not a pairing I would have ever read on my own, but since it was written by ChilianXianzi, I knew I had to give it a try and I wasn't disappointed! Nothing happens between them and the story is endgame Wangxian, but Qingheng-Jun certainly develops feelings for our Xiao-laozu. Really loved the idea of him just becoming a rogue cultivator after his wife's death and the Lan clan merely saying he's in seclusion because they have no idea where he is. In the end, it all works out too and he goes to scold his nephews and brother into making things right with Wei Wuxian and the Wens. Mostly The Untamed canon! Excerpt: "Aiyah, Daozhang, you're so good at this," Wei Wuxian sighs, "Are you sure you were a rogue cultivator and not some prodigious farmer, huh?" "My-" Daozhang Zhou's voice falters for the briefest moment, and Wen Qing holds herself against looking up from tending to her own herbs, ears pricking, "Someone very dear to me was fond of growing things, and I suppose I learned some things, watching her." "She used to plant all sorts of things, made them grow so beautifully," Daozhang Zhou continues, his voice now quiet and musing, as if he's not talking to Wei Wuxian anymore, "But she loved gentians, covered her garden with it, and gave me the dried blossoms to keep." Even Wei Wuxian has turned quiet beside the Daozhang, a heartbreaking understanding in his grey eyes. Wen Qing had always wondered what their nameless Daozhang had lost, what ghosts he carries around his shoulders so heavily - But now that she's seen the outline of it forms, it just makes her feel a too-familiar bereftness. A kindred grief. Wen Qing stands quietly, and leaves the two to their shared grief and potatoes.

Since they seem to be a hot topic, what is your opinion of Lan Xichen, Lan Qiren, and Jiang Yanli?

Like personally they rub me a wrong way to varying degrees. Not because they are bad people but mostly little things. I will admit that I have to reread the book, so fics and meta might be coloring my view. Anyway, what are your thoughts on them?

Hi! Thank you for waiting for me to answer this, since they are often such hot topics I had to wait for a day in which I was prepared for dissent in my notes to answer.

This got quite a bit longer than intended, so cutting for length.

In order of your listing of them:

Lan Xichen:

I think that he is a great character, I quite enjoy his personality type, his virtues and his flaws. He is a man who wants to do well in the world and does his best to treat those he knows with equal respect without being blinded by what others say about them. Unfortunately this creates a double edged sword as he will only accept his own opinion and that of those he trusts implicitly on matters, and he is not the best judge of character in the world, thus leaving him open to manipulation in a way that can cause a lot of harm given his position.

I do think he's a much better person than many of his generation and almost everyone of the previous generation. He has his flaws and blindspots, but he does not resist changing in the same way they do. Of every clan leader we see in the narrative, he is the only one who makes the effort to choose differently in the present over the past. His flaws do not doom him to death in the same way that it does so many others and in the end, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji do not give up on him, both of them considering him and worrying about him in their own way.

Lan Xichen makes a point of calling Wei Wuxian Wei-gongzi at all times, even when others around them refer to him with much worse and rude terms. He treats Jin Guangyao with genuine respect and tries to use his own attitude and treatment of Jin Guangyao to shame others into treating him better when they do shun him simply for being of lower rank and who his mother is, and he maintains this even when they aren't around. Considering the amount of people who cannot do this to their faces, that says something about how he wants to treat people in general. It is simply that his blind spot of wanting to trust those he knows to be good as well causes a lot of incidental harm, which he knows and will have to live with. I think he's an excellent character and does not deserve the treatment he sometimes gets from fandom. I can understand more passive trusting characters who want to care for those around them not always vibing well with someone, but it really irks me to see such traits praised in one character and bashed in another, such as those who bash Jiang Yanli for them while praising Lan Xichen and vice versa.

Lan Qiren

In all honestly, Lan Qiren is a character who how sympathetic I am to him really depends on the work and the timeline. In MDZS proper, he's kind of a toad, he very much is the negative side of conservatism, who holds grudges against the children of people that he disliked when he met them and allows his rigidity and stubbornness to color every interaction he has. He very much does cause unnecessary problems and he deserves whatever Wei Wuxian wants to throw his way in the end for refusing to let go of old bitterness and move forward.

However, there are a few areas in which even in MDZS proper I can feel sympathetic to him. His older brother was the pride and joy of the Lan Clan, their heir who would be the next leader after their father stepped down/passed away depending on which came first, but due to the snarled mess with Madam Lan and the decisions that they kept secret to just the two of them to the end of their days, he is pushed into a position that simultaneously never should have been his and is not truly his to have. He is saddled with the responsibility of leading and running their clan while his brother is in seclusion, yet he is only acting clan leader, lacking the true power of the title and ability to act as he needs while his brother remains in seclusion and as clan leader at the same time. That couldn't have been an easy bridge to walk and I do sympathize with him for that. He probably would have been a happier man in a world where he could have gone and lived the life he enjoyed without having to step up where others faltered for decades.

However, that is not an excuse to take it out on children, and my sympathies end there.

Jiang Yanli:

Jiang Yanli is a sweetie who has done the best she can in a world that leaves her little room to impact anything. She's a gentle soul, someone who prefers to lead a quiet life with the people she cares about, raised in an abusive household that she was born into. Such a thing always marks people's souls when they have to survive from the first things they can remember. She is in an engagement where her betrothed treats her terribly, where her mother transparently does not care about her outside of using her to hurt the people she loves and there is not much she can do about it beyond what she does, shielding Wei Wuxian, caring for Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng and speaking up in their defense to outsiders who would hurt them.

She isn't perfect, no one in this novel is, but she really does want to do well by the people she cares about and she goes so far to try and help Wei Wuxian when Jiang Cheng won't, even facing down Jin Zixun and everyone around him to demand apologies and respect when they insist on demeaning him, up to the point where she chooses to save Wei Wuxian's life even after he killed Jin Zixuan and she doesn't know why. She doesn't have to know why to know that she still wants him to live. There is a reason why her positive influence is so important and it's that which leads Wei Wuxian to start helping and caring for her son who has been raised so poorly, knowing that she would want better for Jin Ling and resolving to step up for him in her absence.

In a world which frequently demeans kindness, she chooses it over violence and hatred as her mother and brother would not. She deserves better than what she got, and in a good world, Wei Wuxian would get to keep the girl who chose him as her brother even when the rest of the world refused to respect that. I really like her.

In short, I guess I like all of them for being the characters they are and can see them as well rounded characters with their own weaknesses and flaws. Lan Qiren I care about far less than the other two, but I actually really like Jiang Yanli and Lan Xichen and would rate them up quite highly together (and ship them for a much happier pairing for Jiang Yanli). Jiang Yanli and Lan Xichen are very similar in character in many ways, and I think to demean one for traits the other has is to not respect either of them.

But that's just me, of course. I know that I can write as many words as I want and still people will disagree with me. As long as they give me the right to keep my opinions as well instead of trying to convince me out of them, we can still get along just fine.

How reputation works in MDZS is quite representative of the novel's themes.

Reputation in MDZS, much like in real life, does not accurately represent the truth about a person, but rather it represents how they are perceived. And how they are perceived in cultivation society has a lot more to do with status and power than what their personality is like or what they actually did. More importantly, it has to do with how well they adhere to societal expectations (a lot of which are based on status).

That's why people like YZY, whose attitude was terrible and who never did anything impressive in the novel (at any point that we're told) had a reputation as being impressive and powerful, and yet she liked to whip little boys and lost the only battle we saw her fight. She couldn't even stop WLJ of all people from sending off the signal to initiate the invasion of Lotus Pier - and we're explicitly told that WLJ was so weak she couldn't even wield a cultivation sword and had to make do with a branding iron. WLJ was absolutely not a fighter. YZY was also an incompetent leader, who failed to prepare for an attack everyone knew was coming - refused to believe the Jiang sect would be attacked despite what had happened to the Lan clan just because of her delusions of superiority born out of her classist world view - and once the Wens did arrive at her door, she handled the situation in the worst way possible by escalating it and finally choosing to sacrifice the sect for the sake of her own personal pride, again, born out of classism. To me, this means that we're supposed to notice that YZY's reputation is empty, and it actually comes from her being born with a hight status.

We also have JZXun, who we all know was an imbecile and cruel, arrogant and mean person, whose deeds can all be summarized as abusing and preying of the weak while overestimating himself. He was the one who ambushed WWX with 300 archers by his side, and yet he was seen as a victim by society as the victim, and defended as such, and his flaws were consistently ingnored.

Then we have JC, who built up his reputation by slaughtering the Wens in the burial mounds, people he himself had identified as the weak, the old the women and children. He then went on to spend the next 13 years kidnapping, torturing a d killing people he suspected of being demonic cultivator, and didn't let go even when proven wrong. I won't bring up the life debt he owed the Wen siblings and the golden core he owed WWX because society at large didn't know about those. The point here is that even with all that despite not being liked by people who actually met him, being known to have a bad temper, to not protect his own people unless it either brought him glory or somebody died first, and being known to act like a tyrant, at the time of WWX's resurrection into MXY's body JC was known as a war hero. That's because he was a sect leader. Had JC not had his status, he wouldn't have had anything else either.

Then we have WWX who was always righteous. When he was fighting for the sects in the SSC, everyone approved of him, when the war ended and he didn't act submissive, they feared and hated him. During the Phoenix Mountain Hunt, WWX took down one third of the prey and NMJ took down another another third, and yet, everyone was criticizing WWX, accusing him of breaking the (inexistent) rules and disapproving of him for acting above his status. On the other hand, nobody thought there was anything wrong with NMJ doing the very same thing WWX did. In fact, the thing the cultivation society hated the most about WWX wasn't his cultivation, evidenced by the fact that nobody cared that the Jin sect had XY experiment with demonic cultivation until XY went and murdered a whole clan (and even then, only NMJ did anything about it and it was only the murder he seemed to have a problem with), and nobody had any qualms about using WWX's knowledge and inventions. In fact, what the cultivation society hated the most about WWX was that he dared to act above his status. Just like this, WWX who was a truly good man had a much worse reputation than all those men mentioned above, all of whom were incomparably worse people than he.

We see a few cases like LWJ's, whose reputation was quite accurate and whose exalted deeds were true. Crucially, LWJ was a member of the Lan clan, the son of a sect leader and then the brother of one. He was famous for going where the chaos was, and helping anyone regardless of their identity. The pinacle of what a cultivator should be like, a truly righteous man. And yet, the moment he sided with WWX, the man they had previously slandered to death, cultivation society was ready to turn against him. It was only by the intervention of NHS that LWJ and WWX even got the chance to prove their innocence and expose the true culprits. Crucially, NHS was a sect leader who had real power (unlike LWJ who was the brother of a sect leader and therefore had high status bit little power).

NHS himself had a high status but a reputation as an incompetent and useless brat. However, NHS's case is different from WWX's because NHS had such a reputation intentionally, and used it as means to achieve his goals.

Anyway, I'm just ranting here because I got tired of seeing JC and YZY stans using their reputation of all things to claim that they were "badass" or somehow good or heroic when it doesn't match the actuality of their actions and capabilities in the novel.

Jadecest Week 2023 | Day 4 Sacrifice

Fandom: Mo Dao Zu Shi

Summary:

The artform of suffering is a craft which Xichen has not considered himself a connoisseur of. It’s not that he hasn’t suffered, because the woven webs of tragedy that lead to his birth ensured that suffering would be a consistent staple of his life. There is a performative aspect to the act of suffering that Xichen, for all his talent and desire to learn cannot harness.

Too much of him already belongs to other people—his family, his clan, the cultivation world, the mass of commoners—they all lay claim to the idea of him, and reality doesn’t matter. The reality of all that Xichen is, a mere afterthought to the glory of the great Zewu-Jun. Lan Xichen is merely the necessary sacrifice to maintain—uphold, praise, revere—the idolatry of Zewu-Jun.

Zewu-Jun must be loved, and so that is facilitated through Xichen. Zewu-Jun must be praised, and so Xichen is praised. Zewu-Jun must be a defender, and so Xichen spends his life protecting others. Zewu-Jun must endure, and so Xichen endures.

In between all of that, there’s hardly much room for the act of suffering regardless of what he is subjected to.

The one bright spot in the macabre facade that is Xichen’s life is A-Zhan. In his darkest moments, he wakes up grateful that what plagues him doesn’t seem to affect A-Zhan. A-Zhan loves and accepts him for who he is. A-Zhan requires no sacrifices from him. All he has to do is be a good brother and A-Zhan will love him. A-Zhan loves him and that’s everything; it’s enough for Xichen.

As is the nature of his luck, it is not the same for A-Zhan. A-Zhan opens his mouth and words of love come tumbling out—

Xichen’s stomach holds a pit of vengeful snakes as it sinks to somewhere around his ankles.

Brothers are supposed to love each other. But not like this. Never like this. —

Xichen knows what is expected of him. He knows what he’s supposed to do. The problem with all of the proper answers and solutions is that they all will lead to A-Zhan leaving at some point. If Xichen pushes him away—unacceptable.

He is tired, his entire life has been one of sacrifice. And yet, life is still worth living.

Perhaps, living is a sacrifice. Xichen is familiar with sacrifice. He knows how to endure.

— Xichen is not willing to sacrifice A-Zhan. He refuses to live in a world where he has to sacrifice everything that lays between he and A-Zhan.

Xichen loves his brother, as he does everything else in life, with efficient excellence. Every step taken by A-Zhan is matched by Xichen. Every night A-Zhan comes to him, Xichen welcomes him with open arms. Xichen now walks a delicate balance of loving his brother with a fervent ardor while trying to keep himself sane.

Slowly, but surely, Xichen learns the leisurely act of suffering. He learns that suffering never abandons you once you begin the practice. It accompanies you, wraps itself as a loving noose around his neck. He learns that suffering can be found in all moments, even those of the highest pleasure. He learns that suffering takes many shapes; be it love, sacrifice, guilt, fear, or even pleasure. He learns that sometimes, suffering is pure selfishness.

He learns that for him, suffering—well, it only ever had one face. —

Xichen makes another sacrifice—he tears himself asunder. Someone needs to match his brother’s jagged edges.

for All intents and purposes, 90% of anything that i say do or create for the birthers of the canon mdzs generation are either speculative or headcanons. idk if i'm going to Stop with the lan & jiang sects or if i'm going to go all out & include the nie, jin & wen sects & all their affiliates, & really the only characters i Truly Want to draw are the last Nie clan leader & his 2 wives & lan furen. Clan Leader Nie is slowly giving me uzui tengen vibes, if for no other reason than I Like to Think that Nie Huaisang's Mother is a crybaby like Suma & Mingjue's mother like hinatsuru

all that being said, i'm gonna log some headcanons

Wei Changze is an unfortunate only child, though there's a high chance that he's milk-brothers with Fengmian. wcz's only living relative is his mother, a small woman with no spiritual power to speak of who is nervous in the presence of men. the wei family in general is Small, & any extended family that still lives are so estranged from wei changze and his mother that they may as well not exist at all. while the jiang family was well-off and in no need of any new servants, a young man came by some few decades ago and bartered his sister off to the family in exchange for money and some supplies for travel. the then-clan leader took pity on the woman being sold off by her own flesh and blood and let her work for them, but within a month it became obvious that the reason her brother didn't want her was because they were going to happen on another mouth to feed and no man to claim a bastard. despite her reservation towards men, wei changze grows into the type of person who's unreasonably gentle with his own mother and he's one of the extremely few men that can exist in the same room as her alone without her breaking into an awful fit of trembling. his mother ends up being one of the midwives that helps bring jiang fengmian into the world.

knowing that she was raised on a Celestial mountain under an immortal, & knowing that xiao xingchen's name has multiple instances of the Sun radical in it, i have hcs that cssr's Name has moon radicals in it. i've tried thinking for sun & stars but i dont like it so the yue radical is in there, most likely under Radiant. she's a feral child, less in the sense of being a creature that acts impulsively and lashes out, and more in the sense that she just refuses to be tamed, by her master, by the sects, by the world at large. she's living life & enjoying it, "ain't nothin gonna break my stride, nobody gonna slow me down" kinda girl. she's level headed, very much likes to think things through, but she knows definitively what she does not want.

fengmian has an instant crush on jiejie, though to be wholly fair cssr descended on them like a celestial being herself to wreak havoc on lqr Immediately. wcz is enamored, but knowing he has no hope and lives with expectations of finding a nice subservient wife to fulfill his nice subservient life, he makes no move towards her & instead enjoys the light that jfm's eyes give.

cssr doesn't see the jiang disciples again for another year at Least, after the cloud-recesses incident that ends with her yanking Qiren's goatee out. she spends time in each sect as she wanders around, making friends in each one and by the time she's around yunmeng, her closest companion currently being the nie heir. like a boy in love, fengmian is intent on spending as much time as he can with her, learning her quirks and likes and dislikes, and she can see clearly that he's looking at her with rose-tinted glasses but makes no move or indication that she's intent on returning the feelings, mostly because she's not interested in him but also the idea of being a sect-leader's Wife, a position that would put her in the very proximity of the politics her master held such disdain for, was wholly unappealing

nie zhongzu was a trailblazer. he was very much a man who did not care of other people's opinions and very blatantly lived in a righteous way. if he wanted to do something that didn't affect the people around him in any direct way, he'd do it (like promoting a concubine to the status of Wife when doing so was highly frowned upon). he'd be a himbo if it weren't for the fact that he was a master of the 5 arts, extremely well read and the heir to a clan knee deep in sect politics raised with the expectation of taking this mantel. that aside i like to think he had sisters that carried that big beefy nie blood.

nie furen was a tall woman, her husband was just taller. the man was built like mingjue, a bull. she gives off willow-tree vibes, is probably a strong cultivator, collected in nature and relatively subservient. she doesn't want for much and has accepted her roll in being the political tie to the nies and behaves accordingly. really the only person that can make nie furen flustered is her husband's concubine, and not even in the competitive way. nie furen is gay & she enjoys huaisang's mother Very much as both company and eye candy.

concubine xiao laopo is nie zhongzu's childhood friend. well really she's one of the nie servants that got promoted to concubine after nie zhongzhu announced that he was going to marry her when they were children and the elders rushed to put a stop to his insanity. she's not a cultivator, and because she's not, she doesn't have much of an eye for either the education they receive nor a true understanding of the work they perform outside of "important" & "helpful to all" & "spiritual." that being said, her heart is still moved by whatever arts are presented to her. she's bubbly and quick to make friends with nie furen when the furen is married into the clan, and takes solace in the idea that their husband is a pretty open-minded man to bypass any shame she would otherwise feel behaving towards the recognized wife of the nie clan. xlp has an equal interest in men and women and was Probably present when nmj was conceived. i wanna name her Bu but i feel like thats too on the nose for the Me who recently got into cdramas

wen-sibling parents have the classic shounen + love interest dynamic, borderline main character & his tsun girl who berates him for his recklessness, except roll reversed. their mom is a physically strong woman, tall, wonderful cultivator, probably only shorter than nie-zhongzhu ((honestly she herself might be a nie descendant)). she's a bit on the stoic side and pretty headstrong, meanwhile their dad is a relatively small man who constantly gets into spats with his wife because she'll often have another wound that needs tending to whenever she comes back from hunts. he's Technically a cultivator, but no notably strong golden core and rather spends his time studying the flow of qi & how to best clear blockages in meridians. honestly before they're even married it's highly speculated that she gets hurt just to be doted on. she'll bite back but let him win arguments, and on distant night hunts she'll bring him back bushels of herbs that can't be found in qishan. more often than not she won't present them with any fanfare, but rather just leave them in a place he can find. they're awkward around each other before marriage & argue for the sake of filling white noise afterwards.

wen daifu is wen ruohan's third cousin. he doesn't wear his hair with any real embellishments or guans that denote status in the clan or even allude to his affiliation with the clan, despite the fact that his robes would give it away regardless. he has a gnarly scar on his body courtesy of the main family's children, and is often bullied onto nighthunts with them because he is the best practicing doctor of their generation. despite being brought on as a healer for the longer nighthunts and ruohan taking special interest on keeping his cousin by his side, wen daifu is pretty adamant about healing anyone from any sect that is injured in front of him. he's not taller than 5'7"/170cm, but his curt and clear way of speaking makes up for any attention he'd fail to garner just by existing.

wen ruohan is the middle of 3 boys and quite fond of playing weiqi. his older brother has no patience for sitting and playing board games with his younger brother, being a relatively active kid that enjoys pushing his weight around with other cultivators from his generation. his younger brother is half his age and takes a great deal of satisfaction in imitating their eldest brother but still looks to ruohan for approval. despite his attempts at imitating the eldest son, the youngest brother often finds himself on the receiving end of his peer's fists whenever their squabbles get out of hand. despite his penchant for being all-smiles, ruohan is fond of neither brother.

jin guangshan is the only boy in a family of daughters. all of the jin children are spoiled, and many of his older sisters made it a point to spoil him rotten. his father being elated that they finally have a boy to inherit the clan dotes on him and gives his boy anything he asks for, pardons any misgivings, and creates an environment that caters to his son's every whim. when he meets his future wife at the behest of his parents, his response is lackluster and despite being a beautiful boy, crushes her hopes with the weird faces he makes in response to being introduced to her.

qingheng-jun is every bit as quiet and intimidating as his youngest son grows up to be. he's a leader that gives off a cold and impenetrable aura that makes it extremely difficult for anyone to challenge his logic as sect-leader-to-be, but really quite enjoys it when someone is bold enough to challenge him. he's not the Most expressive person, but he is more than wangji. he just finds that there's not much worth having an expression over, certainly not in excess, and is adept at handling his tasks with the same grace his eldest will exude.

lan furen is a non-cultivator who was raised on horseback, traveling between the central plateaus and the eastern oceanfront. she's adept at living off of the land and while she isn't an inherently kind or social woman, it's easy to see that her heart lies calmest racing across the continent under the wide expanse of sky. she's an excellent marksman and roams with a band of for-hire escorts that keep cargo and people from harm on long treks. despite being a non-cultivator, she probably has the budding of a strong golden core that just isn't focused on in her daily life.

yu ziyuan is a girl about as demur as any other when she's sent to yunmeng jiang as a means of formal introduction to jiang fengmian. she's doll-like in both appearance and personality, but her chaperone comes with gifts from meishan yu to help push along the betrothal process. the gifts in question are resources forged through meishan yu, crystals refined in such a way that can react to and absorb spiritual power, much like how zidian functions. her meeting with cssr turns her bitter towards the prospect of marrying jfm but she is too proud and too filial to let feelings disrupt the process of their betrothal.

Jiang Gunian Made A Change Part 11

Waiting was challenging. There was no news from Qishan. No news as to how the Wen were handling the Indoctrination lessons when the heirs were missing. No news from anywhere. Jiang YanLi paced in the comfort and privacy of her room and exuded as much regal serenity as she was capable when walking around in public.

“Lan Zongzhu, How many cultivators with our talismans do you have remaining at Cloud Recesses?”

“One,” he answered. “He is under instructions to activate it only under the most extreme circumstances.”

She worried at her bottom lip. “A’Cheng?”

“I think over ten remain. One was supposed to go to the Indoctrination Center.”

“Ten. And none have anything to report.”

“They can’t all be dead, Shijie,” Wei WuXian soothed. “I handpicked the fastest flyers with the strongest self-preservation instincts. When the Wen attack, at least some of them will make it here.”

“When the Wen attack....” she echoed. “Why aren’t they attacking?” It bothered her, this stillness. The insult of none of the major sects’ heirs attending should have done something. “Nie HuaiSang. Any news from Qinghe?”

“None, Jiang Gunian. We have several strong flyers with eyes on several sects in Qinghe. None of them have reported in.”

She worried at her lip again. “We need eyes and ears in Qishan. At the Nightless City. We can prepare for war, but unless we have information on what they are planning....”

“Shijie... worrying helps no one,” Wei WuXian tried to calm their leader again. “We have sufficient people who will come to us when the Wen make their move.”

Speaking with the fortune teller didn’t help a lot, either. “What is supposed to happen?”

The fortune teller, Xia KeXin, sighed. “I told you what I knew was supposed to happen. You’ve changed things. It’s anyone’s guess now.”

“What happened. During the Indoctrination. Tell me again.”

Xia KeXian settled on her mat. “The cultivators arrive. Wen Chao is in charge. He says they are to study the Quintessence of Wen Mao. Their swords are taken away. There are night hunts where the students act as bait for Wen Chao to take down his prey. The last night hunt is to some mountain and a cave hidden in its depths. Wei WuXian is the one who reveals the cave location. The students are forced into the cave. There’s a fight, and they wake the monster. The Wen escape. Jiang Cheng leads most of the students to safety by swimming. Wei WuXian and Lan WangJi are left behind. They kill the monster. Jin ZiXuan leads the rescue party.

“Wen Chao sends his... partner... to Lotus Pier to have Wei WuXian flogged and his sword hand cut off for fighting him in the cave and for killing the monster. Your mother accedes to the first request, but refuses the second upon realizing that the Wang woman intends to take charge of Lotus Pier. There’s a fight. Jiang Cheng and Wei WuXian escape; your parents and most of your clan are killed.”

Jiang YanLi stopped the older woman. “You really should address my brother properly. Can we... can we assume that Wen Chao will not be able to find the monster since Wei WuXian is not there to find the cave?“

Xia KeXin thought for a moment. “I would not assume that. It is possible that the cave is found through intense work. But intense work is not Wen Chao’s strong point. It is likely he abandoned that quest.”

“So if... when they attack Lotus Pier, there will be some other pretense.”

“Pretense? I would think the justification for attacking would be obvious. YunmengJiang were required to send its heir and strongest disciples. You’re all here. My assumption is that the Lotus Pier disciples sent to Qishan are dead or imprisoned for the affront, and one of the Wen brothers has already assembled a faction to attack your home.”

Jiang YanLi agreed with the old woman. it was only a matter of time before her home was attacked and her parents and friends.... She hoped they would all survive. “We need spies. We need to be able to communicate. We need current information,” she seethed. “Jin ZiXuan? Will you give us the knowledge of how to send butterflies?”

“No?” he sputtered. “That’s proprietary!”

“A’Xian.” she turned to face her head disciple. “Can you emulate the butterflies?”

He nodded. “It will take some time to design it and perfect it.”

“I need the same capabilities. Ear to ear, person to person. Short messages so we can be informed as to what’s happening out there.”

Waiting was challenging. No news was frustrating.

Then the waiting was broken, but not by a YunmengJiang disciple. The cultivator who stumbled, bleeding, into their settlement was wearing Jin gold. “Koi Tower has fallen.”

In the case of SongXiaoXue going perfectly fix it style (XY meets the other two early, has a life-changing field trip and so manages to just pull himself back from massacring all the Chang Clan, decreases his canon atrocities and joins them in a polycule and becomes A-Qing's annoying uncle), how would JGY interact with them?

Like, thanks to them Chingmei isn't causing too much of a hassle, they'd be supportive of the Watchtower programme, he broadly likes their sect ideas etc, so I guess he'd like them, and it would add another base of support for him.

putting aside that I think convincing Xue Yang to not kill the Chang is...not impossible but pretty damn hard to do, which is why I don't think I've ever written him just straight up not doing it--

(working with novel timeline here, for the most part, because it just makes more sense)

man, that changes a lot of things, though. like, how does that interact with Xue Yang being a Jin disciple at the time (which he would be, if this is pre-Chang massacre, or even if it was afterwards), and specifically while Jin Guangshan is the sect leader? Because while I can see Jin Guangyao being willing to let Xue Yang fuck off and have quality independent daoshi time, I do not think Jin Guangshan would be so inclined; if anything, the second Xue Yang had a remotely positive relationship with Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan, Jin Guangshan wants to use that to draw the pair of them into association with the Jin Sect, which Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan are vehemently going to be not in favor of. That's going to be a hard and probably somewhat insulting nope!

(I mean, I'm picturing Song Lan giving a slightly more diplomatic refusal and Xiao Xingchen is just straight up like "no thank you, I don't want to participate in the corrupt and self-serving sect system :)" which. great move on his part for sure! not going to make him any powerful enemies! one of my favorite things about Xiao Xingchen is his complete indifference to social norms and refusal to be politic about anything, ever. It makes Song Lan's life harder even if he agrees with him most of the time; Xue Yang thinks it's great.)

and while Xue Yang would be happy to ignore Jin Guangshan and fuck off without permission, but that's going to, uh, not go over well and end up with everyone involved in a whole lot of trouble, and as we know, Jin Guangshan is very good at making problems for people when he doesn't like them.

so...that's a problem, and it's not really up to Jin Guangyao.

If they did figure out a way to make it work, and it comes up down the line with Jin Guangyao in trouble...unfortunately, even if they were to get involved (and I think Xue Yang's instinct, friendship or not, would be to go "nope! not getting in that, sorry a-Yao," and Song Lan would be equally disinclined to get into the political morass that's...everything there. Xiao Xingchen might be a little more inclined toward intervention, but I don't think enough to overrule the other two. I do think they'd approve of the watchtowers, you're right! but ultimately there's probably a general sort of distrust of everyone in that whole system (while Xiao Xingchen in this universe might actually still have more faith in the existing systems because he hasn't witnessed via Xue Yang's exculpation how corrupt it is, Song Lan is more jaded, and Xue Yang is the most jaded.). And they definitely wouldn't approve of Jin Guangyao's killing Nie Mingjue or Jin Guangshan, just on principle. So that's going to outweigh any casual existing goodwill from the daoshi, and Xue Yang has too much of a sense of self-preservation to not look at that whole situation and go "yeah that's a lost cause."

and even if they did go to bat for Jin Guangyao, in the face of everyone else turning on him...their word is not going to carry a lot of weight, and by that I mean their word is going to carry no weight at all. I think the most likely outcome there would be Xue Yang getting tarred by association (regardless of what he's actually done, as we know that's not really relevant when the accusations start flying in the cultivation world) and the daoshi getting labeled as poor naive fools taken in by the sinister wiles of Jin Guangyao, etc. etc. It would be very condescending "you don't know what you're talking about."

so...yeah, regardless of how they felt about it, I don't think it would ultimately matter. which is the general tragedy of the Yi City characters, actually (or one of them) - their sheer unimportance and insignificance. nobody, in the larger sense, cares what happens to them! Xiao Xingchen's pleas for justice are ignored. A-Qing's attempts to get people to listen to her before Xue Yang kills her are ignored. Song Lan and Xiao Xingchen both disappear without a trace and, once he falls out of the Jin orbit, so does Xue Yang. I know people don't like the Yi City Arc because they feel it's "pointless" or "sidetracks the plot" and to that I say yes absolutely it sidetracks the plot and it is pointless (in the sense of it all already being over by the time anybody else arrives) and that's part of what makes it so good and so painful because nobody! cares!!! and that makes me so miserable.

Drunk Lan Naofumi 🍶

I have yet another MDZS x Shield Hero idea!

Naofumi is a Lan. Could be a regular disciple or part of the main Clan, I honestly don't care right now.

And he acts like a Lan, following the rules as much as he's able to in this new world. Until the duel against Motoyasu in which Motoyasu cuts Naofumi's forehead ribbon, unleashing the rage Naofumi had kept hidden deep inside.

After the duel, when he and Raphtalia leave, he decides to think everything over. If he'd just listened less to the rules impeded upon him from childhood, they'd probably have fewer problems and enemies. If he'd just said what he wanted, used more words to explain.

And, he shouldn't be impeding the rules upon Raphtalia as they'll be taken as laws upon her because of the slave crest. So, he starts living a little freer and surviving and becoming stronger in this new world.

However, even with the Shield's resistance to any kind of poison, it can't win over the Lan's terrible alcohol tolerance.

Surprisingly, Naofumi manages a whole three cups of alcohol before he passes out without as much as a word, worrying his whole party and L'Arc and Therese.

When he wakes, his face is carefully blank, but his eyes are slightly glazed, and his lips are slightly puckered in an almost-pout.

As Filo returns to playing around, and Raphtalia starts arm-wrestling people again, L'Arc and Therese are looking contemplatively at Naofumi, who seems to be pouting at his empty cup, for some reason.

A few minutes later, he looks up from his cup, coming face to face with L'Arc and Therese both looking at him. His lips parted slightly, in a silent, awed gasp.

"Heeey, Naofumi! Are you drunk already? I saw you passed out!" Motoyasu comes over, cup in his hand and drunken flush on his cheeks, standing close beside Therese, who calmly leans away from the drunk man.

Naofumi is not as calm. He quickly stands up to childishly push Motoyasu away from Therese.

"Don't touch," Naofumi says, putting his hands on his hips, seemingly trying to glare at Motoyasu, but to his party and L'Arc and Therese he's pouting fiercely, and to anyone else, his face is blank as always.

L'Arc and Therese's thoughts: 'Cute'

Motoyasu whines for a few moments but then moves to go back to Myne and his party. (Naofumi is a Lan here. As if he would ever even utter the words Bitch or Whore. He just had her stripped of every valuable possession and political and royal powers.)

Then, Naofumi sits back down between Therese and L'Arc, letting out a gentle huff of breath, satisfied with himself.

As he looks at the table and his empty cup again, he sees both L'Arc and Therese's hands resting on the table near their cups as they watch drunk Naofumi in intrigue.

Pursing his lips slightly more, Naofumi reaches up, and pulls off his forehead ribbon. L'Arc and Therese are a little confused, as they've never seen him take it off around them, and Raphtalia only explained that it was something important to Naofumi, which no one else was allowed to touch except himself and his family (Including Raphtalia and Filo, as his children).

A moment later, Naofumi had tied one end of the ribbon around L'Arc's wrist, and around his own, leaving half of the ribbon free. In their confusion, L'Arc and Therese don't move as Naofumi proceeds to tie the other half of the ribbon around his other wrist, and then the end around Therese's.

Only as he looks proud and satisfied by his work, do his eyes widen, suddenly realizing he bound his own wrists together with little moving space. A pout forms on his face again, which L'Arc and Therese take as him being uncomfortable.

"Do you wanna take it off, Kiddo-" L'Arc asks

"No." Naofumi says immediately.

"Are you sure-" Therese asks

"Keep it on," Naofumi says, determined as he reached over to hold L'Arc and Therese's bound hands in his own

A few minutes later, L'Arc and Therese decide it's time to get Naofumi to bed.

As they get him to his room, Naofumi refuses to let go of their hands, laying on his side on the edge of the bed. Only, when they sit down on the bed to wait until he falls asleep, he moves, hauling the two onto the bed as he moved back to make space. Before they can move, Therese laying on top of L'Arc and both their bound hands held firmly in Naofumi's, who-

Who's already asleep. Welp.

For a few minutes, they maneuver around to get all three pairs of boots off and off the bed, before deciding to just stay and rest for a bit.

(In the morning, Raphtalia will splutter to herself as she remembers what she saw as L'Arc and Therese left the party with Naofumi, while Naofumi only remembers what happened until he pushed Motoyasu away.)

In the morning, Naofumi wakes up being cuddled by both L'Arc and Therese. He's holding Therese's bound hand in his, close to his chest, while L'Arc has somehow moved behind Naofumi, his bound hand under Naofumi to also be held close to his chest.

Naofumi's cheekbones and ears quickly become red. What happened last night?

i’mmm thinkin bout lan wangji. in the donghua and cql specifically, from the events of the wen indoctrination through the sunshot campaign even more specifically. [spoilers below]

like. dad-he-never-really-met’s dead, brother’s in charge now but also missing with all the sect’s books, home’s burned down, fellow disciples dead maimed in disarray, leg broken – in his fanciest white robes and a big ass guan like war regalia marching his way to and through the indoctrination refusing to give anyone the satisfaction of seeing the last lan heir (and possibly acting sect leader???) crack.

and then like, cool: false xuanwu is dead, the other hostages made it out, jin zixuan and jiang wanyin came back, wei ying is safe with his family, cool cool cool time to leg it back to gusu – no sword (leg still broken?) – to help rebuild cloud recesses and hold it down til lan xichen comes back. and lotus pier falls! war is coming! and he’s like. coordinating search parties looking for the missing yunmeng children and the elders don’t like it. that one elder (donghua) comes to him to ask him to chill lest he brings the wrath of the wen back down on them; lwj’s like “but righteousness? not bowing to tyranny?” (v nice lan qiren comes in with the assist and say’s he’s correct). lan wangji doesn’t have much success with finding the yunmeng children in either adaption but he has major success visiting the leaders of smaller clans and sects and rallying them to the cause; lxc comes back with a force of 200+ men ready to fight because lwj went and met them and asked nicely. and now he’s got more free time because his brother’s back and in charge but not a ton of free time because there’s still a war on; what’s he do with all his extra hours? he’s night hunting for the civilians who can’t rely on cultivators anymore because they’re all at war he’s earning a title about it. he’s helping jiang wanyin take out supervisory offices like he’s supposed to he’s also sneaking around with jiang wanyin looking for wei ying.

just a busy busy lad so busy. so responsible! he sees something needs to be done, he goes and he does it. he’s just there ready to work all the time ready, willing, capable, doing his best and it happens that his best is often very good.

Had some thoughts ab vague urban fantasy vampire Xicheng au

the Jiang family r apothecaries and serve both humans and non-humans. The Yu line has been p involved in criminal underbelly type stuff but Yu Ziyuan stopped doing that several yrs before they had kids together. She still teaches her children how to defend themselves.

Wei Wuxian is great at experimenting and creating new elixirs and shit, Yanli excels at putting customers at ease and figuring out what options there r for whatever help theyre seeking, and Jiang Cheng is bookkeeper/paper work extraordinaire.

YZY and JFM still hv a troubled marriage bcut the fact that since the 3 siblings started working, they fill different but essential roles and work in tandem at the shop, its gotten a bit better.

In this part of the city, non-humans r p chill and the humans who r aware of them r like “oh thats just my flatmate Marleen shes chill but like i hv to hose her down after she comes back covered in mud and twigs from a full moon romp”

So hunters r not particularly well liked even by humans bc of History, but they deal w monsters and demons that ur average person cant.

Lan Zhan walks into the shop one day looking to restock his toxin antidotes and Wei Wuxian is immediately and obliviously smitten and invites him to various parties and shit, to which he declines but keeps finding reasons to visit the shop and see Wei Ying <3

Lan Xichen is in the depression zone bc he was tricked by a black market trader (JGY?? Idk yet) into killing several innocent non humans and is seriously doubting whether he can make sound judgements and actually protect ppl. LWJ recently made him move back into their shared apartment but hes still hving a rough time.

the Wens r a vampire clan, and the Wen siblings frequent the shop too and deliver them warnings that Wen Chao is going to try to extort them

after the Jiangs refuse to give in to their extortion attempts, they burn down their shop. Their parents r alive but comatose and the siblings go into hiding

Wen goons r ab to nab WWX but JC sacrifices himself and gets killed and turned.

WWX gets LWJ’s help since the Wen extortion stuff was already a big no-no but an attack and kidnapping like this is under the Lan hunter’s perviee. WWX goes apeshit and takes 10000 psychic dmg when he goes to rescue his babie brother only to find a feral and hungry babie vampire JC.

JC is subdued and put into needle coma by Wen Qing while and WWX recuperates before going to make Wen Chao regret being born but uh oh! The Wens hv gone into hiding now that the Lans r involved.

WWX feels at fault for JC getting kidnapped and turned bc He is supposed to b Protective Older Brother and convinces Wen Qing to bag his own blood to feed JC. Yanli also offers her own blood, altho she cant donate as much.

JC eventually is pulled out of the coma, feeds, becomes lucid, and then falls in depression times as he struggled to come to turns w being a vampire now and he is an extremely hungee boy bc the Wens did something to him.

The Yunmeng sibs stay in hiding for a bit. Yanli salvages what she can from the family shop and w Wen Qing’s help, still meets w clients. WWX runs himself ragged trying to donate enough blood to keep JC lucid and sated and also trying to come up w a tonic to suppress his unnaturally strong hunger.

JC is an anxious mess wrt losing control again and also how WWX is exhausting himself w how much blood hes giving him. JC does what shop paperwork he can while learning the vampire basics from Wen Ning.

WWX finally perfects a tonic to suppress JC’s hunger and is able to recover physically and while they both love each other a lot, things r a bit rocky rn.

Now that hes feeling better, WWX starts to spend the weekends w LWJ looking for the Wens. JYL by chance gets into contact w JZX, werewolf heir to a Business Place or sth and starts trying to negotiate a deal to acquire funds to rebuild the shop while they also both navigate their own awkward mutual-but-believes-its-unrequited-attraction.

WWX and LWJ dont come back one day, and arent answering their phones. JC suspects that theyve finally gotten their heads out of their ass and r fucking. He has negative desire to bug them while Thats Happening but hes unexpectedly run out of hunger tonic and WWX’s notes r illegible.

So he finds LWJ’s address and breaks into their apartment, LXC is just vibing, lying down in bed, w the lights off when he hears someone pick the lock. The Lans hv a fair amount of enemies so hes ready to beat someones ass, esp if theyre the reason Wangji hasnt come home.

LXC catches JC by surprise and pins him against the wall in a kind of sexy way and after a lot of snark from JC LXC’s like oh ok ur chill and lets him go. Theyre both v worried ab their brothers and JC eventually explains his situation and LXC offers himself for JC to feed on while they look for them.
