mdzs is so sickening because it’s truly just a story driven by tragedy, every character has their own. The Nie Sect with a generational curse that drives them to madness and loss, the Lan Sect with their strict rules that tore their main family apart, the tragedy of the twin jades’ parents(not to mention the abysmal way women are probably treated there but that’s a different topic entirely), the Jin Sect with a self-absorbed, power-hungry rapist at its helm, the Jiang Sect with its unhappy Zhongzhu and Madame that passed down their pains and traumas onto their children, and the Wen Sect, with a monster for a leader, leaving no one with a chance to be anything more than what he wanted them to be. Every character and by extension, every sect, has its own unique tragedy that pushes the story forward and it makes me quite a bit insane.

For character bingo, Wen Qing or Wen Zhuliu?
Thank you :D
First up Qing-jie <3
Tumblr media
(replace daddy/mommy issues with uncle issues though xD) So close to bingo but how could I fix perfection xD
I love her and think she's very strong and cool and her role in the Wen clan is very compelling to me.
And WZL
Tumblr media
So close to bingo, but sadly we know nothing about his family xD
He's just cool and compelling! He's the silent stoic babysitter of one of the worst guys! But he takes his job very seriously! He has some history with Madam Yu! And he melts golden cores! Too OP!
Also I just think there was more fun to be had with core melting :)

"Jiang Cheng is selfish."
Canon Jiang Cheng in his brief appearances: is always following WWX around and cleaning up after his mess (like carrying him on his back after he's beaten by the Lan Sect, sitting in the front of the classroom to appear attentive to LQR after WWX's shenanigans to save face for their sect, to quote WWX himself "you've already saved me so many times. So what's one more?"), warns WWX not to anger WZL since he's known as the core melting hand, then goes to attack WZL with his bare hands when he stands between him & WLJ after WLJ has burned WWX, runs for seven days straight to get help for WWX, begs his mother on his knees to stop hitting WWX in front of the Wens even though he knows if WLJ is not satisfied the Wens would lay waste to their sect and it's either WWX or their sect, uses himself as a bait to draw the Wen soldier away from WWX even though he knows his sect will end with him, his only thought after losing his golden core is that now he can't take revenge for his family and can't rebuild his sect, doesn't stick with his brother even though that's what he's always been doing because he can't risk his newly-built sect's safety, only truly gets mad at WWX when he kills their BIL & indirectly causes their sister's deaths, after 13 years still doesn't have a dog, offers Zidian to JL when he can't protect JL himself, even though he can barely stand and lift his sword still goes back for WWX in the burial mounds, takes a stab to the chest trying to protect WWX, offers to take JL's place as hostage for JGY, stands between JL and an unstoppable fierce corpse, doesn't say anything to WWX about his sacrifice.

A slightly unhinged case for jin guangyao knowing about the core transfer while WWX was still alive
Ok. SO. In chapter 101, during guangyin temple, Jin Guangyao clearly knows about the golden core transfer. He uses it to bring Jiang Cheng off-kilter and stab him and simultaneously reveals to wwx that jc himself now knows about the golden core transfer.
I've always wondered exactly when he figured it out. The most obvious explanation is that he pieced it together after hearing about Jiang Cheng asking everyone to unsheathe suibian (also? jgy? how the fuck do you know that? You were already going to/at Guanyin temple at this point! Did you just have people listen in on rumours from Yunmeng and report back to you for that?? Did you tell your spy network where you were going? My whole kingdom for a retelling of this arc from the pov of these random jin disciples seeing their sect leader start spiralling. He's diggin up random tombs? Fleeing the country? And threatening the heir's life?? What was random Jin cultivator #6 thinking of this before Nie Mingjue turned him into minced meat?)
BUT.
The first time I read that line I was like "oh so he's known for a WHILE." I mean, the line "I've always found it peculiar [that wwx never took his sword anywhere]" does indicate he's been thinking about this for a while, but it doesn't have to mean he knew back then. So I absolutely can't say with certainty that my instinct was right. But I DO have some decent canon backing for how he might have potentially figured things out as early as before Wei Wuxian's death. Specifically, after the discussion scene that takens place when wei wuxian does his thing with the wens and dissapears.
Cause, see, Wen Chao would definitely have bragged about Wen Zhuliu crushing Jiang Cheng's core to his father. He killed the current sect leader, and then permanently disabled the only heir. He did it! the Jiang are gone! I bet he was very loud about it until, a few weeks later, Jiang Cheng suddenly strolls up to the battlefield, with Zidian on his finger, cultivation very much intact, looking for Wei Wuxian.
That must've been fucking baffling if you were Wen Chao and/or Wen Zhuliu and/or any other cultivator who was there and definitely saw Jiang Cheng's core get crushed. They must have assumed something went wrong, or he faked having his core destroyed, but we've never heard of something like that happening before, and they tortured him for hours! It wasn't a quick batle where Wen Zhuliu must have missed in haste, he would've noticed!
Now, by the time Meng yao arrives, wen zhuliu and wen chao are both long dead, but that kind of thing would at least still be a source of gossip among the other Wen. The only time the core melting hand ever failed!
It might be something that, say... a very careful spy with a perfect memory looking for information... might pick up on in his stay with the Wen, no?
So, Meng Yao has heard the rumour that sect leader Jiang got his core crushed but somehow managed to... still have a core.
Independantly of his, Wei Wuxian is being really weird and refusing to carry his sword. His primary concern there is wwx stirring shit up, he has no reason to believe these things are connected yet.
But then Wei Wuxian runs off with a bunch of Wen, and before he is cut off, Jiang Cheng tells everyone that after the siege on lotus pier, he and wei wuxian were helped by Wen Qing and Wen Ning! Jiang Cheng doesn't get to say how, which is good for jgy in this moment because he's trying to steer the conversation as such that no one gets mad at the Jin sect for all the war crimes, but even if his goal is for everyone else to forget Jiang Cheng said that, he'd remember it.
So... after the moment where jiang cheng, according to rumours that were contained to the wen, lost his core, he was helped by wen ning and wen qing, who is a really good doctor. And, in canon, had written theoretical proposals on core transfers before, just never experimented on them. Were these available for others among the Wen to read? Did jgy read them? We have no way of knowing. But if he did, he remembers them. Either way, he knows her reputation.
And Wei Wuxian disappeared right round that same moment, only to resurface with his demonic cultivation, at which point he never touched his sword again. Not even in the middle of a dangerous war. Not even when he was public enemy number one and it would do wonders for his reputation if he was seen cultivating the traditional path. When doing so would have made not just him but the 50 people he was shielding safer! if Jin guangyao was somehow in his position, he'd immediately do everything he could to counteract the narrative of beign a dangerous madman who'd left the straight path. Wei Wuxian has been in absolutely desperate situations and still refuses to pick up his sword...
The saying doesn't exist yet, but i'm sure someone like jgy, more competent than everyone around him, is intimately familair with at least the sentiment of "never ascribe to malice what is adequately explained by incompetence" He is helping spread the narrative of Wei Wuxian as a violent madman, sure, but does he believe it? If it makes no sense for wei wuxian, no longer a privileged young master but an outcast, to not pick up his sword again out of arrogancy, the most reliable explanation is that he... can't.
So Jiang Cheng, who got his core melted, got help from Wen Qing, an incredible doctor, after which he coud cultivate just fine but Wei Wuxian, no matter how desperate, never used traditional cultivation ever again...
Hm. interesting!
It's likely no one else in the jianghu outside of the wen even knew Jiang Cheng lost his core to begin with. And Jin Guangyao was never given wwx's excuse of Baoshan Sanren owing him a favor like Jiang Cheng was. He has all the puzzle pieces in front of him and... if anyone as gonna put them together, it'd be him.
And that's my unhinged case for why I believe Jin Guangyao knew Wei Wuxian didn't have a golden core anymore years before anyone else did. He just never told anyone, because why would he?
I think this adds a whole other level to his speech to Jiang Cheng about how everything could've worked out if he'd just trusted Wei Wuxian more and stood by his side. He saw it all play out in real time knowing there was more going on beneath the surface!
Now the really interesting question becomes: When did he figure out Jiang Cheng himself wasn't in on it? Did he piece it together immediately from remembering seeing jiang cheng berate wwx for not carrying a sword, a thing he should've known he couldn't do? Or was it not until later, maybe the fake yunmeng bros fallout, or the REAL fallout when Jiang Yanli died? Or was it still the news of Jiang Cheng going around and asking everyone to unsheathe subian that made him realize that oh my god this stupid bitch had no idea the whole time.

I'm kinda disappointed that there's so very few fics exploring the Core Transfer as an opportunity for Weird Shit happening.
Like, want it or not, JC is the single person in the world that successfully underwent an insane experimental medical procedure and how is that not something to explore? Wen Quing didn't supply a handy guide with negative effects, did she?
Imagine if the word got out that Sect Leader Jiang can unsheathe and use Suibian - gasp! Is he the reincarnated Yiling Patriarch?! That's why he was so bent on killing demonic cultivators, to hide himself?!
Or, hey, if somehow it got out that he has Wei Wuxian's core? Wouldn't demonic cultivators keep crawling out of the woodwork to get their hands on the core of their Idol? Wouldn't there be people ready to experiment on the only available specimen - people who lost their cores to Wen Zhuliu, or those who wanted to get cores without having to work for it, or people too old to start cultivating... There'd be plenty of folk ready and willing to discover how the Core Transfer works to achieve power.
Fuck, imagine JGY learning about it ahead of time and giving Changmei the go ahead to discover how Jiang Cheng regained his core? If they could work out how to melt cores and how to transplant them - the power in their hands would be insane!
Imagine Wei Wuxian coming back to life in a world where JC has been on the experimenting table for some time now, and one step of Huaisang's plan is for Wwx to discover it and save JC, and hope he will be able to testify...
(Jin Guangyao, feeling a bit sad as he visits the "lab" and seeing the co-parent of his child nephew, the man he learned to respect, the man he drank innumerable cups of tea with as they discussed and argued and gossiped across the tables in Lanling or Lotus Pier... Seeing the man strapped down to a stone table, cut open, mumbling nonsense as his loose hair drags over the floor, soaked in blood and carelessly stepped on as Changmei excitedly circles the table... It's a shame, truly.)
Or, the new core not sitting entirely right in the new cradle, some of the veins didn't connect right (Wen Quing was working fast, in a field, with one patient barely alive and the other actively dying, only her brother to help her, she couldn't catch every single strand!) and that results in some qi overflow. In effect JC radiates qi - the more he uses, the bigger the spill; the bigger the spill, the more ghosts and ghouls are drawn to him. The man is a walking ghost-flag. His Night Hunts go by fast, he steps into the forest and the monster of the month is already waiting. (That's why he was so annoyed at JL with the mountain hunt! What do you mean you can't find the ghost? Never happened to me! Sight, nets it is!) But Jin Ling loves hugging jiujiu, because it's always so warm...
I just - it's such a crazy premise, I need some off the wall take on itTT

oooo for the AU Ask Game, an alternate universe where JYL marries someone else who isn't Jin Zixuan? (your choice on who she marries and why!)
Oooh this is a fun one! All right, here we go... this might change EVERYTHING lol
Who does JYL marry? There is absolutely no question in my mind that the best option in terms of inter-sect connections, and a desire on JC and WWX's parts that she be safe and cared for, is for her to marry Nie Mingjue. She would have had a chance to get to know him during the Sunshot campaign, and we all know NMJ drinks respect -women-juice for breakfast - and is a big softie, like look what he lets his brother get away with >.< So yeah, JYL goes to Qinghe and gets a spare didi out of the deal!
But why does she marry? Because yes, she still has feelings for JZXuan, but he's still a man-child who doesn't know a good thing when he sees it ;) But seriously, we have YMJ which is still rebuilding after the war and likely getting more and more in debt to get the supplies and manpower to fix up Lotus Pier, not to mention attracting new disciples to feed and clothe, so they'd need an alliance with another great sect - one that's stable financially and could even help YMJ. Gusu is still rebuilding as well, so they're out, and we've eliminated the Jin. THankfully Qinghe is a solid option all around (as stated above). And JYL has known from the time she was young that she would marry for an alliance, not for love - she would be the one to sit JC and WWX down to tell them it needs to be done (when they hear her suggestion of NMJ, that's the thing that gets them on board - they would have fought just about anyone else).
So at Koi Tower, things might be a little more uncertain because these clans are based on hereditary hierarchy, and without an heir along Jin Zixuan's line, his position is uncertain even if he's the only legitimate son. So JGS pushes for a marriage - even worse when he sees Qin Su's pursuit of JGY, because he'll be DAMNED if he allows JGY to marry before JZXuan. Sadly, I have no idea who he'd marry, probably the daughter of a smaller sect's leader (Yao or Ouyang maybe), but it would be a rushed deal and will make poor JZXuan miserable - but he'll do it because it's what's expected of him, and even though he will not love his wife, he will still give her far more respect than his father gave his mother (I know, low bar, but the boy is TRYING).
So with JYL engaged to NMJ by the time of the Phoenix Mountain Hunt, things go a little different - yes WWX will bust out the Wen remnants and fuck out of dodge, but JYL will go to NMJ and ask him to help WWX (at the very least give him a chance to explain instead of denouncing him with everyone else). This turns the tide for many things because once NMJ sees the conditions of the Burial Mounds and what's left of the Wen, he will be amenable to helping - but will do so under the condition that WWX give up demonic cultivation (and in fact he suggests Nie cultivation as an alternative - this will lead to a sad moment when WWX FINALLY comes up with a proper story and claim that WZL melted his core to explain that he's core-less, and after much crying all around, they can finally move forward from this mess).
So the Nie will lend their protection to the Wen in the Burial Mounds and actually suggest they move up into Qinghe - not by the Unclean Realm, but he will give them land to live on that isn't full of resentful energy, and they will have QHN's protection. This is good, and in return, a certain doctor meets NMJ and will start researching his condition to treat (and hey, if you wanna have fun, have her join NMJ & JYL, I'm easy ;)
So yeah! One change and everything changes like dominos :D
Thank you for the ask!

placeholder post for a drabble I might write, but please consider Meng Yao somehow stealing the secret of Wen Zhuliu's magic hand.
Imagine Wen Yao, in Nightless city, taking over WZL's role in some way (either by copying the technique, ingratiating himself as his student, or some situational cannibalism, all viable ways of stealing core melting secrets imho)
The ramifications are so juicy. Whether or not he tells WRH about his new skill, he is still indispensable to him, especially if WZL is out of the picture - and think about what he could do with a Core Melting Hand in his arsenal.
I'm just ruminating here, but I feel like it'd be a very convenient way to neutralize Nie Mingjue without killing him, for example.
Back in Nightless City, when NMJ is taken prisoner, Wen Yao could taunt him and then take away his cultivation - both for show (to appease WRH) and for self defense, tbh (he knows the fallout will be bad, and he is correct about this in canon). Granted, this would not make NMJ any less furious with him! In fact, he'd probably hate him more. But JGY would have the reasonable excuse that he did it as an alternative to killing him, and for one LXC would buy that, even if NMJ has his doubts.
What does that mean postwar? At this point, NMJ would just be a normal guy and wouldn't be able to hurt a cultivator, not even one with a middling golden core, which means JGY might not fear for his life and might not have to kill him. (NMJ, ironically, might get to live a long life! Has no excuse not to marry for heirs now, but can also continue to lead the sect and this means everyone [except him] is generally happier, including Nie Huaisang.)
What's more, if they decide to keep NMJ's lack of a core a secret not to make the Nie an obvious target, then the sworn brotherhood could be suggested specifically to conceal NMJ's situation, putting him in JGY's debt. There are a lot of interesting ramifications when you remove fear for his life as JGY's primary feeling when interacting with NMJ, and he may take Jin Guangshan's orders to get rid of him with a grain of salt - or even be able to convince JGS that it is not necessary if he leaks the secret of NMJ's missing core. (But the political fallout would then be an entirely different can of worms!)
Also LXC knows and he thinks thatJGY being able to rip out a dude's core but obviously not even considering doing it to him is very sexy.
(thank you server pals for brainstorming this blatant excuse for overpowered wen yao with me, bless)

Why was the way WWX killed WC and WLJ moral but the way NHS brought about the end of JGY morally grey?
Wei Wuxian didn't use anyone that didn't have a hand in ruining Lotus Pier and attacking it. All three, Wen Chao (The one to throw him into Burial Mounds) Wen Zhuliu (Killing the Jiang parents, melting their cores as well as Jiang Cheng's) Wang Lingjiao (Setting up the attack on Lotus Pier and stupidly bragging about it to set off Madam Yu). And before the nameless Wen soldiers being innocent get thrown around for this, no, they weren't as cultivators willingly working under Wen Ruohan and actively and brutally attacking Cloud Recesses and mutilating the Lotus Pier disciples. An eye for an eye justice that Wei Wuxian enacts should not be this controversial.
Nie Huaisang, on the other hand, took advantage of an already unstable man to harness resentment to start the investigation into his brother, lured a child (Jin Ling) to his ancestral burial grounds (who could have died), lured more children (all children disciples who also could have died) to oust Xue Yang and plant the suspicion fully on Jin Guangyao. Bribed Sisi and Bi Cao (with material gain), to further out Jin Guangyao's crimes over the years. And lastly did lie that an already dying Jin Guangyao was about to attack Lan Xichen all for him to die brutally by Nie Mingjue's hand and still not admitting to that truth as Lan Xichen demanded.
One left more obvious suffering and consequences for many and the world.

past ruosang, nhs mourning secretly alone (or with my/jgy if you need another character in there) for wrh? thanks!!!
"I think something's wrong with me."
Meng Yao looks up from the report he's been drafting at the small, rough sound of his former young master's voice.
When his father arrives -there will be a victory banquet, he's already been informed, paid for by the Jin coffers that were barely dented by the war effort while other sects are struggling to rebuild- he will deliver it and the head that has been sequestered away in one of the qiankun bags on his hip.
"You've been through quite the ordeal, gongzi," he says, keeping his voice neutral despite the fact that he has been concerned about Nie Huaisang's state of mind since the Undying Sun fell from the sky.
Since well before that, in fact.
He hasn't even asked for a bath to get rid of the blood yet, when Meng Yao had expected that to be the first thing requested.
"It would be more unusual if you weren't affected."
Nie Huaisang shifts, hunching in on himself more, and Meng Yao bites down on an involuntary shudder when he sees copper and jade and malachite peeking out from the edges of borrowed robes and blankets.
He's still wearing the collar.
Meng Yao hadn't thought to remove it, figuring Nie Huaisang would have found a way to do it himself as soon as possible, but he's still wearing-
Mouth pressed into a thin line, Meng Yao opens one of the drawers of his desk to take out some small metalworking tools, since it's unlikely the key will be found quickly. "Gongzi... let me take that off of you."
His fingertips haven't even made contact with the metal when Nie Huaisang flinches away from his hands with the smallest shake of his head, eyes wide, yet glazed over in a way that makes his emotions unreadable.
Ah... That's what he means by 'something wrong'.
He lets out a breath, then lays down the tiny cutters and reaches out instead to touch the almost completely dried blood spatter across Nie Huaisang's face that makes his eyes stand out even more. "Alright. Not yet," he murmurs, soft and soothing. "Let's at least clean you up, then, before you wind up having to get your hair cut to remove all that blood."
There is a moment of hesitation, then Nie Huaisang nods.
A full bath would still be best, but he doubts Nie Huaisang's mental and emotional state is good enough to let himself be that vulnerable yet. So he settles for heating up a basin of water and the mix of cleansers and oils he'd designed for getting blood out of his own hair during his time working in the Fire Palace, then coaxes Huaisang to lie down on one of the benches for an easier angle.
Wiping the blood from Huaisang's hands and face are easy enough, but his hair takes even more effort than Meng Yao had predicted, and Meng Yao painstakingly goes in small sections, first kneading in the oil blend, then making short, slow comb passes.
He doesn't look at the mess they're making on the stone floor, the melted blood and other things pooling there.
It won't matter.
As he works, he thinks again about the contents of the bag he will be presenting to his father.
Surely, his father will not care, or even notice, if there is something missing.
Pausing in his task, he wipes his hands and gets up. "Just stay put," he says in response to Huaisang's questioning noise, then turns to walk over to one of his other workstations.
When he opens the bag, the head inside looks almost unnervingly serene, staring sightlessly at nothing.
Much like Huaisang has been the entire time he's been washing his hair.
Swallowing back the bile that rises up threateningly in his throat, Meng Yao focuses his attention on the guan the head still wears, on the layers and layers of golden flames around its central ruby-studded sun, on the droplet chain that had always dangled down over its owner's forehead.
It's this that he carefully snips free, hiding evidence of the alteration by folding the connecting links back under the sun.
And it's this that he carefully presses into Huaisang's hand in a gesture of understanding as he sits back down. "If you will let me remove the collar when I'm done with this, I can have it fashioned into something... smaller. A bracelet, perhaps?"
A bracelet, like the droplet chain, will be easy to hide.
It will be a little secret, just between the two of them.
Nie Huaisang folds his hands in against his chest, then closes his eyes and nods. "Thank you."

Wait, I just abruptly thought about Su She (God forbids but he really just pops out in my mind!). Don't know if there are already people writing meta about this, but why, I think Su She isn't exactly, or simply, being loyal to JGY just because he remembers his name. Imo, a huge part of his loyalty might actually be out of a henchman mentality. I mean, if JGY is not a potential heir of the biggest winner clan from the recent biggest cultivation war, say, if JGY is a mere Qinghenie disciple, would him remembering Su She's name evoke any loyalty to the man? I doubt it will. Not when JGY can't offer any resources or support to the newly built MolingSu Sect.
Fans often put Su She side by side with Wen Zhuliu, thinking his loyalty to JGY is because of the gratitude of being acknowledged, but I think it won't be just as simple as that. In WZL's case if he didn't get taken in by the Wen, then he'd just be another Wwx, his core melting technique would be both feared and coveted. WRuohan didn't merely acknowledge his talent, but also sheltered him from others' malice. I can understand why WZL is immensely grateful to him.
But Su she? Just because of a name? I doubt it. How many people should have remembered Su She's name, even that guest cultivator of Gusulan from the second siege, remembers his name, but so what? They're not the potential heir of the biggest winner clan.
Omg, this ask DISAPPEARED from my inbox a month ago! Uuuuuggggghhhhhhhhh!
Ahem, I think that Su She and Wen Zhuliu are comparable, actually, but what’s missing is the material benefits they gain from being aligned with the people they are loyal to. Yeah, Wen Zhuliu got protection, but he also gained status (being adopted directly into the Wen Clan) and was only under the clan heirs in authority. Without the Wen, I doubt that Wen Zhuliu would have become like Wei Wuxian, because what made Wei Wuxian hated was that he was powerful and morally upright. With how he had no issues supporting and defending the Wen during their oppression of the other sects, without them in the picture, I can see Wen Zhuliu simply taking up with another powerful clan and finding himself in the exact same situation that he did under the Wen.
Su She didn’t just care about Jin Guangyao because the latter remembered his name; Jin Guangyao directly funded the MolingSu Clan. Even though MolingSu was founded before Jin Guangyao became the Jin Clan leader, without Jin Guangyao’s direct sponsorship, Su She would have had and been nothing. His clan might not have even lasted until the present-day timeline, but association with the Jin gave them the legitimacy needed to survive despite Lan disapproval and ridicule from the rest of the cultivation world for their lack of skill and overt stealing of another clan’s techniques.
So you’re right: it’s not as simple as just dogged gratitude. Now, I do think both characters were stubbornly loyal to a fault, but there were more cards at play as to why they were so loyal that wasn’t just “someone paid attention to me!” I think Wen Zhuliu’s probably comes from filial piety to his new clan, but Su She’s probably came from him thinking that Jin Guangyao sponsored him because he “believed in his talents” or some sappy shit.

[Drunk!JC after sect conference meets LQR]
RenCheng | Mo Dao Zu Shi 27-12-2021
[drunk young sl #jiangcheng after sect conference (rencheng undertone?)]
The night was stretching for quite a while now and everyone was slowly starting to leave the banquet room. This also meant Jiang Cheng was finally able to slip away from those who had been talking with him and making him drink more and more. He knew he should probably have stopped earlier, but some of them were also important sect leaders and with the state of lotus pier at the moment, he couldn't afford to offend anyone. still, maybe he should have gone easier on the wine.
He carefully got up, testing his balance once he was upright.
"Is sect leader jiang alright?" he heard on his left, turning only to find nmj and jgy stopping next to him on their way out.
he forced a smile on his face, politely saluting them.
"It is nothing" he assured them with a forced smile, "I may have had a cup of wine too much, but I will be alright".
He managed to do some small talk with them, before finally being able to escape, trying to make his way back to his room without stumbling too much.
He truly didn't understand how anyone would enjoy drinking so much to "feel good". All it made him was feel tenser because he felt like it would be even easier for him to mess up right now. at least now he was far away enough from everyone not to make a fool of himself.
he was a little bit surprised when his foot caught on something, feeling himself a bit too slow to react to his fall. All he could do was brace himself for the impact with the ground, hoping no one was around.
instead, he felt strong arms around him, pulling him against a firm torso. he opened his eyes surprised, looking up only to find lqr looking down at him.
the older cultivator had been keeping an eye on jc all night, to make sure he would be alright. It took him to go on a walk to talk with some old friends to come back and find a rather drunk jc trying to make his way out of the banquet.
he assumed it was good none of these older sneakier sect leaders did anything to mess with the young sect leader's reputation, but he still followed him only to be sure nothing would happen.
he did good with this, as he was able to stop him from falling to the ground.
he was a bit surprised when he felt the young man suddenly relax in his arm as if he was melting against him. Only then did he realise this had probably been a stressful situation for the young man. he had seen him in the past couple of years, fighting to show he could bring the jiang sect to what it was in the past. It was a lot on his shoulder and he couldn't mess up when he was rebuilding everything from nothing.
jc suddenly pushed himself from the safe embrace, getting flustered when he realised he had started to lean a bit too into it, enjoying it. How could he not when it felt so safe? Plus the affection he had grown for the older man was not gone even after all those years.
he quickly apologised, feeling a bit surprised when lqr stopped him with a kind smile. "Why don't you come and drink some tea with me? Maybe it will make you feel a bit better" suggested the older man.
"I wouldn't want to bother you this late" replied jc, only for the older man to insist he really didn't mind since he offered first. He wanted to make sure the young man would be well.
so jc followed, finding himself sitting next to lqr as they drank some tea. It felt a bit surreal since he couldn't remember ever doing this.
It did feel good drinking some tea, anything that wasn't wine was good right now, even helping him relax more. The silence was also relaxing, nothing awkward and tense like it could sometimes happen with others.
"sect leader jiang is doing a good job" lqr commented, taking the young man aback, not expecting such a compliment from the man. "You are working hard on taking the jiang sect to its older glory and I know you can bring it ever higher" he added.
"I know it can be hard sometimes to deal with all these other sect leaders, especially since most have decades of experience, but you are doing a good job doing so".
jc felt a bit flustered that a man he liked and looked up to so much was suddenly complimenting him and encouraging his hard work. It sent a warm feeling within him.
"But sometimes it is alright to challenge them a little bit when it is getting too much for you, always walking on eggshells can tire you out quickly".
jc already knew that, but he felt like he couldn't do otherwise. What else could he do but try to make sure his name was growing before he could put his foot down more properly?
"If things ever get too hard and suffocating, do come to me" then added lqr, turning more towards him, "I will be there to help you out, I want to see you succeed".
This somehow struck a chord within jc, making him feel strongly about hearing somehow so clearly tell him they were there for him, that they wanted to see him *succeed* while sounding convinced he will be.
in his still drunken state, he couldn't stop the tears from welling up in his eyes, trying to wipe them before they could roll down his cheeks. "I-I will remember this" he assured.
How could he refuse such a suggestion? Something in him wanted someone he could rely on, and it was somehow even better if it could be someone he had affection for and that he could also look up to. he had never felt judged by lqr and felt safe around him, how could he refuse?
He felt a bit surprised when he felt arms around him again, pulling him closer to the older man, nearly sitting in his lap. He wasn't able to control his tears anymore. Something in him simply couldn't stop after feeling so happy and relieved that someone seemed to believe in him so much, even stating it so clearly to him. This is something he had needed, for someone to allow him to rely on them a little bit without expecting anything in return.
he cried himself to sleep into safe arms, knowing he would be in good hands with lqr
