The "Top" fics in fandom are not the "Best"

I've seen a couple of posts here in there implying that the ways to find the best fics in fandoms are just to go to ao3, and sort by 'Most Kudoses', 'Most Bookmarks', 'Most Comments', etc. I've also seen some folks say they feel like their fics are failures if they don't make it to the front page(s), or at least near there.

But the simple fact: this is not true.

Now, I'm not saying that the top-rated fics in a fandom are bad.

Far from it! They're often very popular for a reason. Well written, fun dynamics, cool plots, etc. A lot of my own favourite fics have made it to the first page when you sort by "Most Kudos"-- but then, a lot of mine also haven't.

Why?

Because those selections are inherently biased.

What do I mean by that? Just that there are other factors influencing what stories accumulate the most comments/kudoses/etc in a fandom, meaning none of these serve as a neutral metric of quality.

I'm going to explain some of these biases briefly, just so folks get a sense of what I mean:

Age Bias This, I think, is the easiest to grasp. A fic that is three years old just has had more time to gain views than a fic that's three days old. Also, consider that pretty much any fandom needs time to grow. If you're in the first days/weeks/months of a fandom, there probably just isn't that much content being made. If there's only 10 fics on the archive, then 11th one stands out. It'll get a lot of attention. But if that same fic were to come out a couple years later, when there were 11 fics published in a single day, well, people are more likely to miss it. If you doubt me, take a look at the front page of 'Most Kudos' for a fandom of your choice. You'll probably see a lot of the stories there are on the older side- and this is exactly why.

Multi-Chapter Bias There are a lot of ways people find new fics to read, and one of the most basic is just: look at the front page of the most recent updates. Now, this way of sorting fics is exactly what it sounds like. A list of fics in order of when they were most recently posted/updated. But, obviously, if a fic has multiple chapters, it's going to appear on that front page way more often. A 50 chapter epic has 49 more chances to get seen this way than a one-shot. This issue becomes even more intense when you consider the Most Comments sort option. For a one shot, a person is probably likely to only comment once. Maybe if they really love the story and revisit, they'll leave a second or third. But multi-factor fics? By design, people come back every update. And that means a lot of people leave comments every single time. (Or at the very least, after big plot developments and twists!) This is what leads to long-running multi-chapter epics dominating the 'Most Comments' rankings in most fandoms.

Popular Pairing Bias Again, this is just obvious. Some pairings are more popular than others. A rare-pair fic can be just as soulful, hot, and well-written as a story featuring the fandom's powerhouse fic, but if only 30 people are interested, well... [shrug] Less people will click on it, kudos it, and leave a comment. To a lesser extent, you can expand this to any trope. 'Coffee Shop AUs' just seem to be more popular than, say, '1930s Mobster AUs'. That effects what tags people search, and what fics they find. But shipping is such an important element of many fandom cultures I thought it would be the most illustrative.

Positive Feedback Loop Bias And honestly, this is maybe the real clincher. Because I've established some of the things that can cause a story to start gathering lots of kudos, comments, and bookmarks in a first place. But once that starts, you get a positive feedback loop going. Because what's one of the first things a person does when they're looking for good stories in a fandom? They sort by 'Most Kudos'. And then they select the first story on the list, and they like it. So they leave a comment and kudos and... Yeaaaah.

So... What do we do about it?

Well. Nothing really. This isn't really a problem. It's just something to be aware of.

Any attempt to put metrics on something as subjective as art is going to fall short. So don't go rating the quality of your own stories about how well it performs, and don't go chasing those coveted top spots. You'll have a lot more fun if you just write stuff that you enjoy, make some friends, and recognise a lot of factors influence fanfic statistics beyond just quality.

Searching via most comments/kudoses/bookmarks remains one of the easiest and quickest ways to start diving into a new fandom. It's often the first things I do, and found stories I love that way.

That said: I highly encourage you to search for fics beyond just that method. Here are some of my suggestions if you want to figure out ways to get started:

Search up Fanfic Rec Lists. Lots of people put them on their blogs, and websites like TVTropes even have that as a whole feature

Ask for fic recs! Seriously! Post about it in the fandom's tumblr tag, join Discord communities, etc, and just say, "Hey, I'd love to read a story where... [insert the general themes, characters, or plot points you like". People will be EXCITED to share.

Search by specific tags Like, do you really, really love time loops? Search the 'Time Loop' tag in your favourite fandoms. A lot of specific tropes, AUs, etc. are canonized, so you can find a lot of stuff up your alley that way

Browse the most recently updated fics Yeah, I know, it's old school. But seriously, you can find some awesome stuff there-- including stories from new authors just starting out, who could really use a boost!

And hey... if you find some stories you like... Consider writing some fic recommendation lists of your own. Spread the love!

5K Fic Celebration!

AO3 hit 5,000 Dimension 20 works on AO3 today, thanks to a lot of great writers over the years <3

For those who spend less time there than me, some stats on the most popular characters at this point and all. I'm going to list an overall edition and then one that excludes Fantasy High characters, as Fantasy High dominates the lists otherwise:

Overall Characters: Adaine Riz Fig Fabian Kristen Gorgug Aelwyn Ayda The Bad Kids as a whole Jawbone

Hob is 11th, if you were to exclude the Bad Kids tag. There's a sizable gap in between Fabian and Kristen, though it's actually shrunk slightly since Junior Year started; I think we might see a lot of Kristen and Gorgug fic with their Junior Year selves in the books. There's a big drop between the PCs and the NPCs, though Aelwyn and Ayda are the two most popular NPCs by a mile. They used to be closer to each other, but Aelwyn's been in Junior Year more than Ayda and she's been increasing her lead as a result.

Overall Ships: Riz/Fabian Ayda/Fig Hob/Rue Adaine & Aelwyn Kristen/Tracker Riz & Fabian The Bad Kids & The Bad Kids Zelda/Gorgug Adaine/Fig The Bad Kids & Riz (If we exclude the Bad Kids relationships:) Esther/Ricky Adaine & Riz

My guess is that Riz/Fabian gets dethroned in the next few months; this used to be the most popular pairing by a mile, and Ayda/Fig are close on their heels now. A lot of the popularity of that pairing is from prior to Sophomore Year finishing, though it's not totally waned, obviously.

Hob/Rue are, for the record, tagged in one more fic than Rue themselves is, which I think is hilarious.

It wouldn't surprise me if long-term Zelda/Gorgug in particular falls entirely off this list; we'll see what we get the rest of the season though.

Also, speaking for my non-romance writing aroace self, I LOVE that there are so many platonic relationships on this list.

Not-Fantasy High Edition! Characters first: KP Hob Amethar Rocks Theobald Gumbar Ruby Rocks Delloso de la Rue Pete Conlan Jet Rocks Caramelinda Rocks Liam Wilhelmina

This is maybe a surprising list, a mix mostly of Crown of Candy and ACoFaF with Pete at least making the list to break up that monopoly - this tracks as those are by far the second and third biggest campaigns for fics on AO3. To me the biggest highlight here is Caramelinda making it at ninth, above Liam and Lapin among others.

Rue/Hob Ricky/Esther Lapin/Theobald Andhera/Binx Caramelinda/Lazuli Elody/Gerard Deli/Colin Jet & Ruby Calroy/Amethar Dale/Sofia

I mean, I have a Rue/Hob fic that certainly doesn't present the relationship in a positive light. I feel like it's less interesting in a happy light than the others of ACoFaF, alas, and the gap between first and second on this list is massive - there's more than twice as many RueHob fics as Ricky/Esther. Half or more of the Elody/Gerard fics are focused on them breaking up, which is reasonable.

Now three months into your official relationship you began to explore each other’s family lives. Aemond knew about your upbringing. Where you studied, who your parents were, how you met your friend group. After a while of coaxing on your part, Aemond opened up about his family.

It seemed they were rich. His father owned a finance firm. His half-sister and older brother were CEOs of the bank. Jace was his cousin and the next in line for the seat of CEO after his mother. He rolled his eyes when he told you about his family. “We are a mess, actually. My big sister Helaena was right when she told me to grab my fund and run.”

You were sitting at his kitchen bar on a stool watching your boyfriend cook some brunch. It was oddly satisfying to watch him do domestic things like cooking. It was strange seeing him so calm and casual. You only knew him as the up-tight, stiff surgeon.

“So tell me Doc,” You laid your head in your hand. “Why not the family business? Why did you choose to work in a hectic field where people can scream, vomit or put other bodily fluids on you?” Your eyebrows were slightly furrowed.

Aemond chuckled as he turned to you with the skillet he made an omelette in. He plated it and sat it in front of you with some cluttery. “First off, I’m a surgeon. I don’t get yelled at so much. Second, blood is mainly one of the only bodily fluids I get in my scrubs. Third and last, if I would work for my father I would work myself into a burnout in the first year of my working in the company.”

Your eyebrows raised. “Why do you know this for sure?” Aemond sat next to you and began to part his own omelette to let it cool down. “I would have to do my workload and that of my older brother. He is just in the firm so he has a job at all. My mom had to beg my father to employ him. Aegon attended business school and had relatively good grades. He just got involved with the wrong crowd. He has seen two rehab clinics by now.” Your eyes were wide.

Aemond ate his food without looking at you. A clear sign he wanted to end the conversation. You left it at this. A little overwhelmed by the news.

Later that evening you walked around his apartment. It was like a furniture magazine come to life. Everything had its particular place. There was no grain of dust in any of the rooms. Currently, you were snooping around in his study looking at his literary collection. His bookshelves were massive. You stopped at some graphic novels and old comic books. So he was a nerd after all. Your eyes grew wide as you discovered a rather spicy genre of Manga.

“Oh, my gods!” Aemond heard your exclamation from the living room he currently read a file for his next patient. He flung the manila map to his coffee table and rushed into his study. Your exclamation worried him; he thought you hurt yourself. He froze as he saw what you had in your hand.

Your eyebrows were raised as you wore a teasing smirk on your lips, “Doctor Targaryen, I didn’t know you read Hantai!” You smirked at the revelation. “How naughty!” Aemond chuckled nervously. A blush crept up his neck. “If I tell you I wasn’t the most popular kid in middle and high school would you believe me?”

I pointed at his collection of graphic novels and comic books. “No, you must have been a charmer.” Aemond chuckled. “Loner would fit better.” You walked over to him, still with one of his Hantai books in your hand. “I would have sat next to you at lunch.” Aemond grinned, “Really? Little Miss ‘popular theatre girl’ would have sat next to me?”

You grinned as he used your past hobby as a leverage point. “Yes, I would have. And in high school, we would have probably been the ‘IT Couple’.” You grinned. Aemond rolled his eye, “Yeah right. Maybe because we would have dressed like characters from IT to Halloween.” He scoffed. Your grin widens. “You get my point, honey!” He scoffed again.

You put your hands on your hips. “You don’t believe me? I saw your high school pictures. You must have been a fantasy for some girls.” Your boyfriend chuckled as he walked closer to you. He snaked his arms around your waist and pulled you closer to him. “Maybe. But right now I want to be only one girl’s fantasy.” He looked down at you before capturing your lips with his in a searing kiss.

Happy 2024 from Silmkinkmeme

Happy 2024! I hope it will be great year for all of you. 2023 was pretty great for the kinkmeme thanks to all the wonderful authors and prompters.

We end the year with 240 prompts and 117 works. Our Prompt Post 1 has also seen it's fair share of activity․

And now, because it's New Year, I'm going to reveal a stat that only I can see. We have 171 UNPOSTED CLAIMS on Ao3! Of course, some of these claims won't become fics, but so many people are interested in the prompts.

Thank you all for your participation and here's to a more fruitful year.

Just for fun, I'm going to compare the kinkmeme Ao3 trends with the general Silm fandom under the cut.

Right off the bat, the kinkmeme differs from the general fandom. We have 77 explicit works, followed by mature (17), teen (15) and gen (8), while gen works are the biggest part of the larger fandom, followed by teen, explicit and mature.

As for the warnings, the first two places align - No Archive Warnings and Chose Not to Use Warnings. But after these, it's violence, rape and death in the kinkmeme in that order and death, violence and rape in the larger fandom. The kinkmeme doesn't have any fics tagged Underage, and that tag is in the last place in the general fandom.

The kinkmeme's biggest category is M/M with 56 fics. I would call it unsurprising if the larger fandom's biggest category wasn't Gen. M/M is in the second place in the fandom, while Gen is in the fourth place in the kinkmeme. F/M is in the second place in the kinkmeme and in the third place in the fandom. F/F is in the fourth place in the kinkmeme and in the fifth place in the fandom.

Now for the most interesting tags. Maedhros unsurprisingly dominates the character tag both in the kinkmeme and the larger fandom. Maglor is in the second place in both. Interestingly, Elrond who is third in the fandom doesn't even feature in the top ten character tags in the kinkmeme. In the third place, we have Fingon who is fourth in the larger fandom. Notably absent from the top ten of the kinkmeme are Sauron, Celegorm, Celebrimbor, Glorfindel and Morgoth who are all in the top ten for the fandom. Instead, we have Finrod and Curufin. The kinkmeme also has four ladies in the top ten - Aredhel, Nerdanel, Idril and Lúthien - while the fandom has none.

It gets even more interesting in the relationship section. Fingon/Maedhros is of course the most shipped pairing on Ao3, but the first place in the kinkmeme goes to Maedhros/Maglor with Russingon falling behind them. Maemags isn't even in the top ten relationships for the general fandom, which apparently prefers Maedhros & Maglor (fourth most popular relationship in the fandom and outside the top ten in the kinkmeme). Fandom straple Angbang is absent from kinkmeme's top ten and so is Silvergifting, while the former is in the second place and the latter is in the sixth place in the larger fandom. Celebrian/Elrond, Fëanor/Fingolfin, Erestor/Glorfindel, Elrond & Maglor, Fingon & Maedhros, which are all top ten relationships in the fandom didn't make it to the kinkmeme's top ten. Instead, we have five Aegnor/Andreth, four Aredhel/Maedhros and Galadriel/Lúthien, three Celebrimbor/Maeglin, Fingon/Maedhros/Maglor and minor relationships.

The only overlap between the kinkmeme and the general fandom in the additional tags are Angst (third in the kinkmeme, first in the fandom) and Hurt/Comfort (sixth in the kinkmeme, fourth in the fandom). The remaining kinkmeme tags are almost all sexual in nature - starting with PWP and Anal Sex (first and second respectively) and ending with Cunnilingus. There are no sex-related tags in the fandom's top ten additional tags.

Ngl, is it just me or does shipping non-canon ships like, really unnecessary??

OKAY OKAY, don't come at me, I am not gonna harass you for shipping something other than the canon, just stating my opinion, no harassment twords me:3

I really don't get it honestly, what's the point of shipping a character with an already canon love interest or is already dating? It never like, made sense to me, and it's not just me hating on non canon ships like I'm genuinely confused

There's three types of non canon ships

Ships where characters have actually good interactions, chemistry, and lots of their stuff together just makes sense but can't cause they're already dating/have a crush on someone else

Ships that are either "crackships" and are most likely either hated or loved and just randomly became popular

And ships that are either just literally pr0ship or just for shitpost to annoy the fuck outta people

And the infamous "rare pairs"

The first types of ships I mentioned are like willuz or amawillow or willumity, yes, they're both actually really cute ships, have decent chemistry, either characters had a redemption and are better people now, and good interactions, sure they're not canon but pretty damn sure they could work out if Dana would want to add it in TOH

The second types of ships are like...oh god this is a lot...goldrick,huntmira,lunter,guster/gunter, amiter,vinria,jerbic,skarlow, cameda, and so on, none of the ships makes sense in my eyes really cause I just don't see them happening or they are already dating, have a love interest, or just random background characters that pop up on a few episodes each season

The third types ships are really obscure, some not as much as other but nonetheless pr0ship or just plain out random, such ships as hootith (Hooty x Lilith), Beluz, anyone x the Collector, Eduz, Luz x King, Skinger (Skara x King, and yes that fucking exists) and so on

For the rare pairs, if you haven't heard of those yet it's basically just rare characters being shipped together that much people haven't heard/seen, such ships are like gusity (Gus x Amity), Veeity (Vee x Amity), Gus x Vee cause their names together sound fucking stupid, Brischa (personal fav XD), Dareda, Adrian Grey x Raine cause I can't remember the fucking name, skarter (Hunter x skara), and I'mm not sure if there's more lol

And some of the people who ship rare pairs are extremely toxic, I remember once on Tumblr I scrolled down a bit on my feed and I saw this account showing a rare pairs titled "Veeity" which is basically Vee x Amity, I just ignored it for the most part cause rare pairs in my eyes never made sense, I thought the account was fine until I saw the tags, I was tempted to block them but just refreshed my feed, the tags where, and I think in caps lock, "I really fucking hate Lumity and Veesha so I'm just gonna ship this" or something like that, if that tag isn't a red flag to you then I don't know what is

Rules: Give us the links to your fic with the most hits, second most kudos, third most comments, fourth most bookmarks, fifth most words, and fic with the fewest words.

Most hits: Maps, which I'm enjoying writing but am not in fact putting a lot of effort into. But Russingon is a very popular pairing, as we all know!

Second most kudos: And They Looked Up and Saw a Star, the fic that is currently the bane of my existence.

Third most comments: A Stitch in Time, which is one of my favorite stories and which I never expected to get as much attention as it has.

Fourth most bookmarks: Speak No Evil, which is another story I'm quite pleased with. I just really love the idea of Maedhros speaking the language of the orcs and teaching it to the twins.

Fifth most words: Home Is Behind, a multichap WIP about young Ereiniel and her parents in the aftermath of the Dagor Bragollach. I've been rotating this story in my mind, writing bits of it down, posting pieces and deleting them for ten years now. This story gives me so much agita, but I really want to tell it and tell it right.

Fewest words: Lullaby, a brief bit of fluff between Fingon and his pregnant wife. I know Ianneth is not my most popular OC, but I love her and that's what counts.

What are my Flaws

Pairing: Dinger Holfield x Fem!Reader

Warning: Swearing, Underage Drinking, Use of Weed

Summary: After being invited to a party some truths come out after a silly drunken conversation.

A/N: Not posted in absolutely ages sorry about that!

Word Count: 2.8k

Lainie Diamond, the school's popular sweetheart, most people feel a streak of jealousy when they see her walk through the halls with a herd of teenage boys, sometimes even girls, i"m not one to judge, trailing behind her. Although I should hate her, I mean she pretty much stole my ex from me, it's not her fault though, she's honestly breathtaking. I love her more than anything, we've had this bond like no other since she moved here about 4 years ago and ever since we've been attached at the hip.

Of course always being with the school's, hell maybe even the state's, wow girl can have it's downsides, like bringing her with me to meet a boy and him totally falling for him, or having to third wheel almost all the time!

Even though there are a few downsides I would never change her for the world, she has the most golden heart and intriguing personality, what is there not to like?

"Hey Y/N!" Lainie shouted across the classroom as I walked into maths, earning a hush from the balding teacher at the chalkboard, she rolled her eyes.

"Is that Lainie Diamond? In the flesh?" I laughed as I walked towards my desk.

"Yes it is, now be shocked," she teased back, causing me to faux gasp.

When I sat in my seat I immediately felt the presence of a certain redhead sitting behind me, I rolled my eyes, as much as I love my friends. Dinger and Joel always seemed to get me riled up, more so Dinger, he just always knew how to push my buttons.

"Good morning, Y/L/N" Dinger whispered from behind me.

"Dinger," I nodded, while trying to copy down what's on the blackboard.

"Not even a good morning, wow, fuck you too then." He gasped and muttered, making me huff in frustration.

"Calm down it's nine in the morning jesus." I groaned, I could hear him snicker to himself, he definitely knew that he got a rise of me. I just know there's going to be a long day ahead.

By the time lunch had rolled around I was on my last nerve with Dinger, I guess I'm feeling really irritable today, usually, I can keep my anger in until last period before he truly pisses me off.

I don't get how one person can have that many annoying characteristics, he's not even that bad a person to others, but he just has something out for me, I'm telling you. For example, when Bobby first introduced us, he was nothing but nice to me, mind that was about five or six years ago.

Ever since we were 15 he just seemed to have it out to annoy me, which influenced Joel to tag along and piss me off, it's two years later and they're still doing it, you'd think they would mature a bit, but no, only seems that me and Lainie have.

I mean even Bobby is more level-headed than him and trust me Bobby is a nutter and a half.

"If you glare any harder holes might actually burn in his back," Bobby chuckled, snapping me out of my hateful thoughts.

"How come I'm the only one truly irritated by his mere existence?" I question, facing the black-haired boy next to me.

"Maybe you like him!" He teased, nudging my shoulder.

"Yeah, no," I deadpan, now I'll admit he is a decent-looking boy but his personality is definitely off-putting. Bobby then gives me a knowing look, "as if, have you seen how he acts, I'd rather drown in scolding hot lava than date him for more than five seconds."

"Woah, that was a bit harsh princess," Dinger hummed. Great just great, why does he have to be near me whenever I don't want him there whatsoever.

"Don't be such a smart ass then Holfield and maybe my opinion on you will change," I scan his face for a moment, seeing a trace of a smirk, I continue, "which is extremely unliking since the thought of being with you is simply revolting."

I smiled to myself watching him give up and turn away to go talk to Joel, finally I had gotten a rise out of him.

Before I knew it lunch was over and I had to go back to class, I trudged through to halls toward my Physics room, dreading the next hour of my life. Luckily I sat next to a sweet girl, Evie.

"You don't look too happy," she commented when I practically flung myself in my seat.

"How could you tell?" I replied flatly.

"Well what's pissed you off, or who?" She questioned, slight humour in her voice.

"That stupid fuck, Dinger Holfield, god knows why I keep him in my life he's so incredibly frustrating!" I huffed, crossing my arms.

"I mean at least he talks to you, I would die if a boy with his looks even spared me a glance." She reasoned, a day-dreamy look in her eyes.

Her comment made me feel a bit distasteful, I don't really understand why but I pay it no mind and reply. "Sure he's ok looking but his personality is his main downfall."

Before Evie could reply the whole room was silenced by our teacher, she finally seemed annoyed by the class's constant chatter. After a treacherous class, the bell finally rang signalling it was the last period.

"What class are you off to?" I ask Evie as we gather our stuff.

"English," she groaned, "you?"

"Art," I answered happily, I honestly quite enjoyed art, well it's better than maths or english.

She quickly smiled at me when we parted ways to go to our separate classes.

Sadly my peace had been interrupted by none other than Dinger Holfield, who was slinging an arm over my shoulder.

"Dinger, what are you up to?" I inquired, my eyes flicking between his face and the arm over my shoulders while my cheeks flushed red.

"You looked quite lonely there, like a small puppy, so I'm here to walk you to class!" He cheered as if he was the kindest person in the world.

"Well I'm Mr Mackal's room, so we're nearly there," I told him, hoping to get away from the encounter as soon as possible.

He took his arm off my shoulder and started to fiddle with the zip of his army green jacket, "Me, Joel and Bobby are going to a party tonight, come with us will you?" He spluttered out. I just nodded in response, face still flushed, "and- uh- bring Lainie!" He finished his sentence, while trying to redeem himself.

I nodded again and chuckled as he practically sped-walked away, I didn't realise I was that scary. I shook off the slightly odd behaviour and entered my class.

Before I knew it the time of the party, Dinger had invited me and Lainie to, had rolled in. The boys were going to pick us up at seven so we had just over an hour to get ready.

"What are you wearing?" Lainie asked you slightly panicked at the time.

"Just a mini dress, or maybe a nice top and a skirt." I answer, rummaging through my closet, "you can wear one of my outfits, yeah?"

"Yes, please! You are honestly a lifesaver!" She smiled widely. I picked her out a black fitted skirt and a silver sparkling cropped vest to match, it was more my style than hers but it didn't matter, she suited everything.

While she changed into her outfit I started deciding between a dress to wear, I was thinking a black one with mesh arms, and perhaps some silver heels to match so that me and Lainey would be somewhat corresponding.

I changed into my outfit and we started to jokingly model about my room, "You have the best clothes, Y/N, I swear," Lainie praises, her comment made me beam, I was infatuated by her mere presence never mind her sweet words.

Lainie reached over my bed to glance at my alarm clock, "we have fifteen minutes, give or take, before the boys come." she commented, I hummed in response.

Lainie sat on my bed fawning over the photos of Ralph Maccio and River Pheonix in my newest edition of BOP, while she was engrossed in my magazine I took the last of my curlers out, I adored doing this to my hair it always added just the right amount of volume.

"Thats the boys!" I cheer as I watch Joel's red mustang pull up infront of my house, I quickly fix my hair and then the straps on Lainie's top before we leave my front door. "Bye Dad!" I shout up the stairs.

We swiftly exit my house and walk towards the car. Lainie obviously sat shotgun next to Joel, meaning I had to be stuck between Bobby and Dinger. "Hello honey," the redhead boy laughed, leaning close into my side.

The car journey was about twenty minutes, I didn't talk much although Bobby, Lainie and Joel seemed to keep themselves occupied and Dinger was trying to understand how to work Joel's new lighter.

"Come on man, I just want a smoke!" He groaned still flicking the side of the light.

I hummed, "hand it over," he obliged and I flicked on the flame and signalled for him to put the cigarette in his mouth. He watched me with open eyes and his cheeks a shade of rose. I quickly lit his cig and moved back, registering how close to him I was. When I sat back Bobby sent me a knowing look, making me mouth 'shut up' to him.

When we arrived at the party Bobby offered me his hand and pulled me out of the car, I walked to Lainie's door and helped her out, "Dinger didn't seem too happy about Bobby helping you out the car," she whispered with a teasing smile across her lips.

"Oh shut up Lainie," I mumbled as she laughed and linked arms with me.

We walked towards the front door of the house, I didn't really know whose party this was, apparently, it was one of Bobby's friends from the neighbouring school.

The first thing we did when we entered the house was find the stock of drinks, "what are you thinking Y/N?" Lainie asked, eyes roaming the display of vodka, beer, tequila, whiskey and even some rum.

"I'm thinking of a vodka coke," I pondered, grabbing a red solo cup. Lainie nodded in agreement grabbing the vodka and a cup of her own, she poured some vodka into the two cups while I grabbed the coke and added it to the vodka in both cups until it was mainly full.

'Okay I'm away to mingle, you want to come?" She asked me, I took a swig of my drink and shook my head.

"I'll catch you up later, yeah?" I smiled.

I am honestly so confused with Dinger, sure he's annoying but we have these moments, it's as if the world stops spinning and it's just me and him. Before I knew it my drink was finished, I poured myself a new one, this time with a more generous amount of vodka.

"I really need to go talk to more people," I mumble to myself, I really had to get this prick out of my head. I walked into the crowd and started talking to some girls.

"Hey! I love your dress, where did you get it?" A girl I've seen around school asks.

"Thank you, I got it from Tommy Hilfiger! Only $70 can you believe that?" I grin before taking a gulp of my drink.

"Hey Y/N!" A girl shouts, a big group walks up to me, Evie standing at the front.

"Evie! You should have told me you were coming!" I grinned, "oh my god, are those Guess jeans! I need them!"

"Yes, the fit of them is honestly amazing!" She fawned. "Want to come and get a drink with me, there's this one whiskey that tastes just like the apple juice in the mall!"

"Hell yeah!" I beamed, the other girls followed as we made our way to the kitchen, I poured the whiskey that Evie handed me into my cup and took a drink. "Evie how much percent is this?" I asked.

"It says twenty-seven, tastes like there's none though!" She laughed, gulping down the last half of her cup.

"So introduce me to your friends," I coax, eyes scanning the group of about seven girls behind her.

She turns around and points to the first girl, "This is Chanel, her mum really likes handbags," she whispered the last bit before pointing to the next girl. "This is Tracy," she makes her way down the line saying the name of each girl. They all looked nice enough but I was really wanting to mingle with more people, my mind wasn't exactly deterred from the thought of Dinger's face.

"I'm going to head, I'll talk to you all soon!" I smiled softly, added some more whiskey to my cup and walked into the crowd, hearing a chorus of 'byes' and 'see you laters' from the girls.

"Hey beautiful, where are you going?" An unfamiliar boy said, looking into my eyes.

"Oh no where," I giggle, I don't know if he's honestly attractive or if it's just the alcohol.

"Maybe we can talk a bit," he suggested motioning me to sit on the couch. "I'm James."

"Y/N, I haven't seen you around here before," I smiled, situating myself on the couch.

"Well I would remember seeing such a pretty face so I'm assuming you don't go to ACU?" He replied.

"Yeah I don't go there, I go to the school for the dumber part of town. I joked, downing the last of the liquid in my cup, feeling it slide down my throat. "I'm going to get a new drink, I'll be back in a second."

"Wait, give me your number just in case I miss you," he offered me a pen off the nearby table, I wrote my number onto the palm of his hand and walked to the kitchen.

While I was on my way towards it a pair of hands grabbed my waist, I whipped my head around to see Dinger with a clenched jaw. "Dinger, what the fuck!" I mutter sternly. He stayed silent while he guided me into the room.

While he walked me I felt over whelmed by his redolent scent. "What do you thing think your doing," he whispered through clenched teeth.

"Getting dragged by you to the kitchen, duh!" I drunkenly laughed.

"Don't even think about fucking with me Y/N" He threatened.

I grabbed more whiskey and filled my cup to the brim, " I'm not doing anything you're the one grabbing me and dragging me away!"

"That guy! Why are you talking to him?" He questioned getting close to me, I could smell the strong stench of beer and weed in his breath.

"Cause I'm a single girl who can talk to whoever she pleases!" I babble, looking at him with the most menacing eyes my drunken state can muster.

"God you're so stupid! I like you Y/N!" He practically yelled.

"No you don't" I whisper, looking at his pleading eyes.

He backed away from me and sat on a chair at the drinks table. "What's my flaw?"

I laugh, until I realise he's deadly serious. "Well you're irritating, you have a bit of a jealous streak, clearly, and you always push my buttons." I giggle.

"So nothing physically is wrong with me?" He ponders.

"No, you're hot as hell!" I admit, feeling his eyes glued to me as a finish yet another cup of whiskey.

"Really?"

"Yeah, I mean I would be in love with, like head over heels, if you were less annoying." I chuckle grabbing the bottle and pouring the drink right into my mouth instead of a cup.

He groaned and grabbed my face, "you're so fucking confusing," he crashed his lips right into mine. I wrapped my arms around his neck and he trailed his hands down my back to my waist.

He pulled back as we heard a set of footsteps walk into the room. "Thank god! I thought you died Dinger!" The voice belonged to none other than Bobby Keller. "Y/N?"

"Hey Bobby," I replied cautiously.

"Hey girl!" He shouted, well more squealed. Yes he was definitely high. "Want to come smoke with us!"

I hummed before nodding and grabbing Dinger's hand and following Bobby towards the back garden. He handed each of us a joint and we sat on the grass while gazing at the abendrot sky while the drugged smoke filled our lungs.

AR Ship Week - Shipping in 2023

This is the first weekly post in the lead up to Alex Rider Ship Week. There's a little over 4 weeks to go!

This week we’re going to look at Alex Rider shipping fandom again, one year after our previous meta on Shipping in 2022.

Another year and a frankly spectacular amount of shipfics later, here we are again, about to look at the state of Alex Rider ship fics.

So what's new in the top five ships this year? Nothing, actually. As expected, the undisputed top ship is Yassen/Alex (1), but the entire top five remains the same, though Yalex is dominating shipping fandom more and more. Yalex now has 10 times more fics than the second most popular ship, up from 7.7 times last year.

Yalex has added an impressive 192 fics to the count (an increase of 52 percent!), while Yassen/Ian (Yian) has almost overtaken Tom/Alex (Tomlex) for the second ship on the list. Last year, Tomlex was at 48 fics and Yian at 41. Now the count is 56 and 55, which means Yian might overtake Tomlex's spot as the second ship on the list by next year.

Since the rankings remain the same, we decided to dig a little into ratings and tags instead and take a look at what characterises the three most popular ships (also the only ships with more than 50 fics each).

For all three pairings, two of the three most popular tags are 'Hurt/Comfort' and 'Fluff' (2). For Yalex, the third tag - to no one's surprise, presumably - is 'Yassen Gregorovich Lives'. For Tomlex, it's 'Angst', and for Yian, it's an equally unsurprising 'Ian Rider Lives' as the most popular tag for the pairing - a tag that exploded in popularity with the TV show's arrival. The AR ship fandom lives by the motto of 'I reject your reality and substitute my own' and will embrace it to its fullest (3).

The real differences begin to show when we look at the ratings:

Just as Yalex is hands-down the most popular pairing, it's also the horniest. 39 percent of the fics are rated 'Explicit' (4) and another 26 percent are rated 'Mature'. 'Teen And Up Audience' and 'General Audiences' together make up 32 percent.

For Tomlex, 'Teen And Up Audience' is the most popular rating (55 percent) and 'General Audiences' is a distant second at 22 percent, probably as a result of the age of both characters (5).

For Yian, 'Teen And Up Audience' is also the most popular rating (53 percent) but this time followed by 'Mature' and 'Explicit', which makes up a combined 29 percent.

In terms of general stats, there are also noticeable differences:

The average Yalex fic has around 6.6k words, 136 kudos, and just under 1700 hits. This is helped along by a number of multichapter, 50k+ fics as well as the general popularity of the pairing.

The average Tomlex fic is just under 3.2k words, has 91 kudos and around 950 hits. In contrast to Yalex, the pairing has no fics with more than 25k words, which results in the much lower mean wordcount.

The average Yian fic is just under 3.9k words, has 94 kudos, and around 750 hits. Like the Tomlex pairing, there are not yet any longfics with the pairing (the longest is around 15k), but a smaller percentage of fics below 1k words means that the average fic is longer than for Tomlex. Yian also has fewer hits but a slightly higher kudos-count.

Other fun observations:

Yalex, like all three of the most popular pairings, is generally a solo pairing. Out of 563 fics, only 9 of them have Yassen/John as a pairing as well, along with 7 fics that have Alex/OMC. Tom is tagged in 44 fics, Tulip Jones in 39, and Jack in 31.

For Tomlex, the only other pairing of note is Yian (which shows up in 6 of the 56 fics), and Jack is tagged in 11 of the fics.

For Yian, the same 6 fics Tomlex appear. The only other character of note is Alex, who appears in 23 of the 55 fics - almost half of them.

Alexmis fics are generally much more centred in the Artemis universe than the AR universe. No other AR ships commonly occur with Alexmis, and of the top ten characters, all are from the Artemis series, except Jack in 3 fics.

For Helen/John, Alex appears in 30 of the 43 fics, more than two-thirds. That can either be because of the family relation (as Alex is also commonly tagged in Yian fics) or because the tag appears as a background or past pairing in some Alex-focused fics.

There you have it: A brief overview of shipping in the AR fandom in 2023. Next week we will be back with a fresh bunch of shipping recs!

(1) On an impressive note, 89 of the Yalex fics are written by Suzie_Shooter over the course of eleven years. That's 16 percent of the total amount of Yalex fics and includes 6 of the ten most-kudosed fics of the pairing as well as a number of beloved classics.

(2) Definitions of 'fluff' and the 'comfort' part may vary between pairings, so someone looking for delicious, tooth-rotting fluff would probably want to check the rest of the tags on the fics.

(3) Though to be fair, with Ahorz's grasp on continuity and the addition of the TV show, the concept of 'reality' is probably debateable.

(4) This admittedly also covers graphic violence and similar beyond just graphic smut - or in the case of Yalex, sometimes both at the same time - but a glance at the AO3 page will reveal that yes, the fandom is, indeed, horny.

(5) That, or TV!Tom's beanie is just that much of a mood killer. The jury is still out on that.

a few explanations for some things that have come up!!

why a 1v1 pvp?

tumblr polls don’t have either a ranked or a multiple choice options, so this is the best next thing. if i had more than 2 in each, i wouldn’t know what is ppl’s 2nd choice unless it is the second most frequent 1st choice, so to speak. having 1v1 polls would allow me to compare more data.

also, making ppl choose between two is less choice anxiety-inducing in my opinion. yes, a bit more work for me, but choosing between two is a little less work for y’all :)

why in order?

a few reasons.

first, i think a lot of ppl have a strong association between their opinion on the season and their opinion on the episode, so i didn’t want ppl implicitly comparing the seasons themselves instead of comparing episodes. ofc besides the finale-premiere pairings but i think the fact that they are supposed to be direct cause-effect episodes neutralizes that.

second, due to the fact that the show has a weird balance of episodic and serialized storylines, the general quality of the sequences of episodes is kind of inconsistent. this led me to thinking of this quality of the show as my own kind of randomizer. there are some pairings that are rather unfair, i admit, but that’s just how it turned out to be. i do have some failsafes installed in the calculation of the future rounds, so don’t worry abt that too much.

third, i think it’s a lot easier to compare the quality of the episodes when in context with each other. it’s just easier to remember how you felt going between one episode to another, so it would allow for a more informed opinion.

tumblr fandom is not a representative sample and is very cliquey.

you’re right! but it sure is fun to see two ppl who i know for a fact are mutuals reblog the same post and tag it with “SWEEP” for opposite choices.

on a serious note, yes, there are definitely going to be polls that were heavily influenced by where they got reblogged to, but even within the same circles, opinions range far and wide.

if it makes you feel any better, i can already tell that the polls have traveled across a variety of character-girlism association - and there’s still about a week to go for a good chunk of these polls.

what’s next?

well, we’ll see. once all polls are done, i am going to analyze how each episode did in both of its contests and how each of its opponents did in their own contests as well (and, if necessary to specify even further, how THEIR opponents did, too.)

additionally, i’ll put into consideration just how wide the winning margin is. a 51% victory is obviously different from a 90% victory.

also, even though i do hope for an approximately similar voter turnout for all polls, it would obviously not be guaranteed, as some episodes are simply much more popular or people have stronger opinions about them than about others. i would then also put into consideration just how many people were very active about promoting and voting for it…. even though i do hope i get a lot of votes in all of the polls <3

the exact plan for the future rounds is not exactly clear to me right now as i have a few different options. all would be dependent on the variety and frequency of similar results. there is a chance i would just be using the first round as a preliminary round to figure out how to sort the episodes into better fitting brackets for an actual bracketed march madness type selection. or maybe i’d try to find a way to make it a very specific ranked poll, specifically using the relative results from the first round. + other ideas i have that will become a lot more clear once i have the first batch of official results.

the best thing everybody can do now is just continue voting! all of the polls are tagged with the season number (e.g. #s4 or #s10) for the ease of navigation, so i encourage everybody to vote. the earlier seasons will finish their polls sooner than the later ones, so make sure we’re voting consistently. i would also appreciate any and all promotion for any polls that have less than average number of votes.

Hi! Sorry, I really mean no harm and I don't want to start any discourse at all, but I saw your Platoria post from a few days ago, (wait, December 4th?! And it's December 11th now?! How time flies! *cry*) and saw that you said, it was one of the most underrated ships in the fandom. Sorry, but it seems like it's one of the most popular! I know it's the third most popular ship on ao3. So I was just wondering what you meant by that. It's a great ship tho!

honestly ty so much for asking this, and you're so polite about it, which means a lot lol

so i talked about it a lot here (which may or may not have been the post you're referring to!) but i really appreciate you asking me to elaborate, because yes, from glancing at the AO3, i absolutely can see why you would think it's one of the most popular!

and before i get into this post, i first want to say that i am in NO WAY bashing the ships that i am mentioning. i love all of these ships, i think they're wonderful, but i also think it's important to recognize this issue. so please do not come for me saying that i'm shitting on people's ships.

going into the Platoria tag on Ao3, however, the top stories aren't even Platoria-centric. It's either gen pairings listed first (like non-ship), or it's Tuggoffelees or another major pairing. Or the pairing is part of a larger work, like a bunch of one-shots compiled together!

(and i will be the FIRST to admit that i do that, where i list Platoria even if it's a secondary ship in my stories!)

and honestly, saying that Platoria is the third most popular ship on Ao3 really doesn't mean that they're one of the most popular ships.

the Platoria tag has 76 stories.

The Cats the Musical fandom has 1,361 stories (as of when i'm making this post).

That means that the Platoria tag takes up less than 6% of the Cats the Musical fandom page on Ao3.

and like i said, that tag has stories that aren't even Platoria-centric, they're either a background couple or have a few stories within a collection of one-shots that also have other pairings.

While Victoria is a very well-beloved character in this fandom, Plato is almost always forgotten about. He's surprisingly one of the most underrated characters, which is a bit understandable, given that we barely see him in the second act of the show due to the actor needing to be in Macavity makeup + costume for the majority of the act.

also there was a whole thing a few years ago within this fandom where i saw a few people basically making Plato out to be this terrible manipulative character, JUST BECAUSE HIS ACTOR ALSO PLAYED MACAVITY, so i think people just don't think of Plato that much, which is so unfortunate.

and i know i always mention her when it comes to discussing this, but PLEASE go check out @munku-collar's posts about biphobia and bi erasure within the Cats fandom. it's incredibly pertinent to when i say that Platoria is underrated (as well as other m/f ships like Demestrap and Casslonzo).

m/f ships are either completely disregarded, ignored, or added in as an afterthought. Bringing up Ao3 again, Tuggoffelees has a whopping 404 fics (taking up about 29.5% of the Cats Fandom page), whereas the next biggest ship only has 198. That ship is Demestrap, which takes up about 14.5% of the page. I love Tuggoffelees, everyone knows that, but Demestrap is literally as canon as Cats the Musical can get. Yes it's wonderful when actors confirm that they're playing Tugger and Misto as a romantic pairing, but that's not how they're played all the time. But Demestrap is pretty much ALWAYS played as having romantic undertones, so I think the fact that the CANON m/f ships (Demestrap and Platoria) have less fics combined than Tuggoffelees says quite a lot.

Demestrap, Casslonzo, Platoria, Tuggelurina, those are all ships that are often pushed aside in favor of ships like Alonzostrap, Victeazer, Tuggoffelees. and i've seen instances within this fandom of people getting asks claiming that they're being homophobic or other wild accusations the SECOND that they say they prefer an m/f ship over one of the more popular m/m or f/f ships.

so from the outside, yes, it looks like Platoria is one of the most popular ships. but when you really look at it, it isn't.

First of all, I don't get what so great about jaskier either, there are far better and more fascinating characters, especially in games and books, and lots of them. So my question is: is this only in the show bc I'm not sure if dandelion is popular among the book fans or the gamers. I think characters like Regis, Eskel, Lambert are far more popular and of course Yen and Triss and Ciri are again way more popular and the lodge too.

ooh interesting question!

if you look at ao3 before december 20th, 2019 (air date of s1) there were 586 fics with the witcher book tag, and 1,480 fics with the witcher video games tag.

for comparison, the witcher tv show tag has a whopping 22,144 fics, to this day.

it should also be noted that tw3 was what made the witcher gain popularity worldwide. if you check ao3 stats before the third game, there were only 11 works (and only 3 of those are in english).

the most popular pairings: book - games

even if you check jaskier's character tag you see there are fics, but not a lot (his character tag has been used 73 times vs geralt's 377 in the books tag)

the fan wars let's be honest, at that point, were yen vs triss (because of the games)

then you compare it to the most written pairings now:

see how he's involved in practically every pairing? (with of course the very stark difference between geralt/jaskier and yen/geralt, that's more than 18k of fics!!!!)

he's the second most written about character, after geralt!!! (notice how ciri - the actual main character of the books - is only 6th)

so i would say, yes. the popularity of jaskier is entirely to blame on the netflix show ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Stats. I have a love/hate relationship with statistics. I sucked at any kind of math in school, but wouldntchaknow I ended up having to deal with stats in my erstwhile career as a medical writer. As in, I developed passing aquaintance (read: ability to fake it) with them in order to sound less like the total ignoramus I was (and remain) when I was talking to researchers. I learned to love them in an asbtract kind of way as a language of truth that everyone could speak. So, anyway, OF COURSE I keep track of stats for my fic, and pretty much everything else in my life. Thank you to @perverse-idyll for tagging me and giving me an excuse to trot them out.

Given that I write mostly rarepairs featuring Minerva or sometimes the other old folks of the Potterverse, my stats aren't especially impressive when compared with the others doing this game, but they're mine, and I'm quite happy with them. Fact is, I write mostly for myself, and if anyone else is interested in my scribbling, I'm as chuffed as a Niffler in Cartier's.

Most Hits

Epithalamium (Minerva/Albus, 181k words), with 10,145 hits on AO3. Makes sense, as it's my longest fic, and one of my earliest forays into writing fic (and it shows.) Mostly written because a) I still love this ship and b) I couldn't find much fic about them that made any kind of sense to me. Most of what was written before JKR told us about Albus's grand amour with Grindelwald seemed to portray Albus and Minerva as adorable opposites, with Albus making extravagant romantic gestures to woo a Minerva who bore only a passing resemblance to the one in my head. (According to Fanlore, one of the early nicknames for this then-semi-popular ship was "HMS Frivolity and Felines". Shudder.) I take my Minerva/Albus with a side of toxicity.

Second Most Kudos

The Peculiar Resilience of the Refugee (Petunia & Rosmerta friendship, 7,777 words), with 218 kudos. I was pleasantly surprised at how much people seemed to like this fic, since it's gen and Petunia-centric, but I'm so glad. I loved exploring Petunia a bit more deeply and giving her (and Dudley) a shot at a happy-ish ending. It was also fun to fill in Rosmerta's backstory a bit.

Third Most Comments

Till 'A the Seas Gang Dry (Minerva/Albus, 55,110 words), with 48 comments. A sequel to Epithalamium, and one of my fluffier efforts, written for a friend who is a die-hard Minerva/Albus shipper and enjoys happier fare for this pairing than I am wont to give them. Travelogue as fic, with Venice as the star.

Because It Is Bitter, and Because It Is My Heart (Minerva/Severus 34,874). My problem child. I started this around the same time as Epithalamium because I (kind of) knew where I wanted to take that story, and I was eager to get to the oh-so-bitter end. I reworked it a bit a couple of years ago because I disliked how I handled some of the non-con in the story. I think it's better now, but still not my best work, although I think it has some good moments.

Popular ships in MHA, comparing different websites

A comparison of ships popularities among different websites. In order: AO3 (fanfics), pixiv (fanworks), tiktok (visualizations), tumblr (subscriptions to tag), deviantart (fanarts), fanfiction dot net (fanfics), google trends (search n), subreddits (total subscribers, active subscribers at different times), twitter (followers of daily-ship accounts). Let me know if you want me to add anything in particular.

AO3 numbers:

Bakudeku is the most popular BNHA ship here, and also the most popular anime ship in all of AO3 (it is the n10 in all the top100 most popular ao3 ships). In second place we have Kiribaku and then Tododeku. Erasermic is fourth, and then we have a big jump for the rest of the ships.

Izuocha is the top fm ship.

PIXIV numbers:

On pixiv I searched the Japanese names of the ships, and for the MM ships I searched and both types (ex. bakudeku and dekubaku).

In first place we have Bakudeku, second place Tododeku and third place Dekubaku. In this case Kiribaku is fourth instead of the usual second place. Differently from AO3, the most popular FM ship is Todomomo and not Izuocha.

If we sum the two versions of each MM ship (ex. Bakudeku + Dekubaku) we have:

We have a very big gap between Bakudeku/Dekubaku and second place (Tododeku), then we have very similar numbers for the third (Kiribaku) and the fourth place (Todobaku).

In general, in both graphs the FM ships have very similar numbers, a part from Kirimina that has a very low number of fanworks.

TIKTOK numbers:

These are the top 10 ships (million of views) on tiktok. Again we have Bakudeku in first place, in this case the difference between first and second place is almost double, similar to pixiv, but here we have kiribaku in second place. TUMBLR subscriptions:

Here I checked how many people subscribed to each tag. Again we have bakudeku in first place, and three main big ship, this time Tododeku is second and Kiribaku is third. Kacchako is the most popular fm ship.
