okay I don’t love ranting about Christians on this page because I try to keep this space free of religious shenanigans but I need to rant about this because it’s actually SO irritating. This is coming steaming hot right off the top of the dome so excuse my grammar and all caps.

Lately my instagram page (thrashkink_art check me out I’m awesome) has been getting a lot of attention from Christians for some reason, and I’ve been getting dmd by people wanting desperately to debate and/ or convert me. They all come at me with the assumption that I’m either an extreme atheist that’s just super mad at God or a complete dumbass that’s simply never read the first few pages of Genesis. I must either be angry or stupid. There’s no way I could have read the Bible and known the story of Jesus without subscribing to it. Anyone who isn’t Christian must not know the story! “Have you heard about JESUS? DID YOU 🫵 KNOW He died for your sins? 😃” Whatever

The thing that is so frustrating is that, EVERY SINGLE TIME I share some information with them about the Bible or religion that they didn’t know, they immediately BLOCK ME. EVERY TIME. And it’s like??? If you want to have a debate and go bar for bar then I’ll humor you. Hey, who knows! Maybe I’ll even learn something new and convert! I’m always open to new information! I love learning about religion! But apparently it doesn’t go both ways because the second I present information they can’t grapple with, they IMMEDIATELY BLOCK ME. AAAAAA

Me: well if we’re really going based off of the Bible, the entire concept of Hell doesn’t originate in the Isrealite religion. Actually, there’s no mention of a Hell in the OT at all, Hell is a Greek concept and so is Lucifer.

Tbh I don't think these connections are very healthy in general and although individual synastry will also dictate the course of a relationship, I feel like while Rahuvians are drawn to Yang planets/Solar men because they're in the darkness and reaching for the light, the people whose light or energy they seek to absorb is bound to feel very ??? by their presence. They could feel drained by you or they could feel irritated bc they can sense you trying to draw them in and they don't want to give you their "light" if that makes sense? Sun in general is self serving, it represents the ego, Solar men do not have a very "giving nature" in my observations. I have noticed a similar dynamic with Ketu & Jupiter as well. Ketuvians are pulled in by Jupiter's expansiveness and Jupiter being very giving leads to a very obsessive but abusive and unhealthy relationships

Nodal people in general tend to be very obsessive in romance and the source of this obsession/limerence is their need to feed on someone's yang energy/light to feel stable. I had a friend with Rahu & Ketu big 3 who for a few years was obsessed with a certain celebrity to a creepy concerning extent and then finally she moved on but I always thought it was a way for her to hang on to something?? i think it's very easy to project onto someone and be completely obsessed with them when in reality the fact that they ignore u or pay u no mind is enough to lose interest in them entirely???

The way I see it, there's two ways this thing would go….

An emotional, lively, feminine woman who has strong family values would be a dream come true for König. If you identify with the concept of marianismo at all, if you're loving and loyal and want to support your husband-to-be (König won't settle being just your 'boyfriend'), want to get married too and embrace your femininity while he gets to be The Man, your provider and protector, well, damn. OKAY SO

Idk about 911 being queerbait guys...i dont think it ever was. I think we have entered a new era of fanservice. Usually with queerbait, the creators and people involved in the show are quite vicious to shippers and queer fans generally, and any easter egg or "moment" feels like crumbs to keep us hooked enough.

911 acknowledged the shipping very very early. Like second half of season 2, and there has never ONCE been a joke at the expense of the concept of being gay, or about buck or eddie being queer. It was simply a nod, like "hey, we get it, you want it, thats all good."

Its not 2010 anymore, gay people are accepted and visible in a way that has never been a reality in the past. In fact, gay people, especially gay men, have come to be understood as a fantastic marketing tool.

This is where i get jaded and cynical, but listen the outcome is the same so stick with me here. Gay pairings and relationships = money is not a groundbreaking concept. It's why they did queerbait. But with stuff like supernatural, it seemed like a far greater risk to make the repressed men kiss than to piss of the queer fanbase. But times have changed. But since the age of queerbait, there has been a rise in gay romance content being made, and being made FOR the fangirls, boys and theys. Think Red, White and Royal Blue, or Heartstopper, or Young Royals, or Our Flag Means Death, or Good Omens. Gay isn't a risk anymore, its a marketing category with a level of guaranteed success. And not just in the global north, Boys Love content has been booming in places like Japan, Thailand, Korea for decades, but never more than now. TV companies in these places figured out very quickly that producing fluffy, comforting gay love stories earns them billions, and have not hesitated to seize this opportunity. My point being, gay dudes sell as fuck.

911 got cancelled and had to move networks. The budget is too high and they need to pull viewership and quick. I think their answer is canonise that ship! I couldn't tell you if that was there original intent, but i do believe that it would be far less lucrative to fuck over their viewer base. I could be wrong, this could be a crazy long game to make the fans trust the show, then pull the rug from under them. But i truly think we are past that point with shows like this.

911 is pure fluff! No one ever dies, if someone is hurt they recover quickly and with no complications, conflict is tame and easily resolvable, and everyone is a sickeningly good person. And the show is also about family, found family, unconventional families. I think originally, the unconventionality of the eddie, buck and chris family dynamic was that it is two men who are not together or married raising a child as coparents and friends. Which is a great story, but even better fanfiction fodder.

I think they are going to do it like the fanfiction. It's the easiest way to bridge the epistemic gap between the current cannon and the reality of both buck and eddie being queer and having feelings for each other. they could try and explain it in their own way, but the fans have already done it, and have clearly agreed on some elements of how this love story plays out, so i think that will be the route they go down. Currently my evidence is that Buck is now canonically bisexual. For some reason a lot of the ships people have have one bisexual and one gay, so the trope is being realised. My next piece of evidence is the catholic thing for eddie. This has literally never come up, its a fan invention, and its in the show now. The eddie and marisol plot line is slightly bizzare, but i think the reason for that is that it is eddie making sense of why he struggles so much to commit to the women he dates. Or its just a bad storyline and isnt very coherent. I guess we will see. My next evidence is the whole set up of Tommy. He is so clearly a way to push eddie and buck together in my opinion. From his introduction, he acts as a wedge between the two that neither of them can make sense of. Very love triangle energy. And my last evidence is all of those goddamn interviews. It seems no one can shut up about these fire fighters getting it on with each other. I feel if they weren't doing it, there would be more effort to shut down the clowning gently, as they have done previously.

In conclusion, i too am a clown. My theory has rocky foundations, a rocky middle and an equally rocky conclusion. I am so tired and delulu right now. I'm with you girlies, this is stressful.

Hey there! Im just gonna jump into it and lay it all out so I don’t get a message from someone who didn’t bother to read the ad (that happens a lot and I’m sure I’m not the only one with that struggle lmao)

Also, apologies in advance, it’s kind of all over the place and a bit repetitive, so please bear with me here.

I’m 22F and seeking other female or non-binary partners who enjoy writing male mains. I prefer playing a female main in MxF settings. I also only play in (preferably modern) fantasy settings with fantasy OCs, no furries, I don’t play as furries, my OCs are all humanoid, the worst being some form of animal ears or tails, or pointed ears, horns, different hair and eye color, etc- but the rest of their forms are human looking. I have to specify this because I’ve had people message me and ask me to make my OCs human and non-magical which I won’t do. Respect my characters, and I’ll respect yours! I just wanna have fun with magical shenanigans. I love a magical story with twists, turns, angst and romance, so if you’re vibing, I would love to hear from you! I would love to gush over our characters too! I want someone to love my characters too like I will love theirs! I want mutual excitement so we can both fawn and fangirl over our OCs and stuff!

I notice lately all the ads are fandom based- I hardly see anyone write originals, which is totally cool! No hate on fandom content at all, I just hope to find someone else who enjoys original pairs, characters and settings and what not. I hope to find someone chill I can vibe with.

To expand on my “preferably modern” comment in the above statement, I have a bit of a multi-dimensional thing going on- all dimensions, timelines, alternate realities exist within a larger scale dimensional plane. Technically, anything is possible, which is great for world crossovers so nobody has to change their own worlds or characters or anything like that. However, I am not good at anything requiring historical accuracy and I find most medieval setting quite dull. I like the aspect of modern earth and having fantasy beings and magic thrown into it. However, I also love having original worlds completely different from earth with their own rules, cultures, and magic and what not. So I’m looking for something flexible I suppose, but I would definitely enjoy something like fantasy characters living on modern earth away from their respective worlds- but eventually we take a journey into our characters unique worlds and settings! I hope that makes sense, I kinda suck at explaining things.

- Please be okay with dark themes, I have very few limits and would prefer someone with minimal limits/triggers other than the usual stuff obviously, but I personally love dark, angsty and downright cruel themes to throw our characters into lol

- Please please PLEASE be literate. No one liners, no one paragraph responses. I write a minimum of 2-3 paragraphs depending on what’s going on in the story whether it’s slow or not, but often I will write up to 5 or maybe over 10 or more paragraphs- and look, I’m not a stickler that much- I don’t expect anyone to write a novel or anything, that gets exhausting. I just want something I can work with, something with detail, emotion, expressive actions and dynamics and good dialogue. If you could write at least 3 or more paragraphs, I would appreciate that so much, but I also understand that things get slow and there just isn’t that much to write about. Which is usually when I go to ooc to try and plot something out to spice it up haha.

- Please plot with me, like be active in the planning, I hate when I’m left alone to plan everything and when I’m the only one actively trying to figure out ideas and stuff, if you don’t help me plan, I tend to lose interest altogether. Plus, the planning is the fun part! I love coming up with ideas and things for our characters!! I would love to make friends too and just have a good time.

Well, doing big posts all together worked for a while but lately I’ve been putting it off because it takes a long time to get them done. I think I’m gonna try switching back to answering asks whenever I can fit it in and posting them one at a time instead of waiting until I’ve filled out one of these major collections.

You would have to buy it twice if you want it in both places, I’m sorry. To repeat myself a little, Steam doesn’t like the key trading thing. Itch may support giving keys for another site, but the reverse isn’t doable with Steam and Steam doesn’t even really want you to get a Steam key for buying somewhere else either. So we just don’t mess around with that.

If you don’t really keep in touch with him and clearly move on with your life, Derek will too and he’ll be over it. But if you are still close as best as you can be, he’ll still think the MC is special. Though, he’ll always support your relationship with someone else if that’s what’ll make you happy.

She’s related to Pamela and Pamela’s last name is the one they use, so the MC has the same last name as Lee.

Will we be able to choose which (they or he) we tend to call Qiu by more often, or will it randomly change depending on the moment?

Qiu knows which pronoun they’re comfortable with at a time and you’ll call them what they’re happy with. And it doesn’t change between lines, it takes multiple scenes or even full Steps for it to switch. So for extended periods Qiu will be totally a guy or fully agender.

Will Step 4 of OL2 have moments?

It’ll be an epilogue like it is in OL1, so it won’t have a bunch of different Moments.

You wouldn’t get the DLCs for backing there. The Patreon is for extra bonus content/early access, rather than being a storefront to purchase the normal DLCs. Rarely we give them out as a side gift, but it hardly happens and if what you want is the DLCs it’s best to ignore the Patreon and buy keys for those directly from Itch or Steam. I’m sorry for the confusion.

It’s great to hear you enjoyed the friendship story! You can live with Cove, but you can’t marry him platonically. Cove has familial affection for the MC if they’re best-est friends. He wouldn’t think to marry someone he loves like family and even grew up with as though they truly were siblings.

Maybe you missed telling Cove you were in love with him even if you mentioned wanting to get married or you might’ve accidentally said earlier in the game that you don’t want to progress your relationship further with Cove. We haven’t removed them, so you can get the scene again. It’s just kind of easy to miss since there’s multiple requirements. You can read a little guide in the FAQ.

Technically, yes. We treat the non-romantic relationship options as truly non-romantic since we don’t want to bait and switch people. But there’s nothing wrong with headcanoning that Cove does have feelings developing for the MC even before the MC has.

No, they just don’t have enough time together.

No, she doesn’t. As for the other questions included, to be honest, I don’t have to explain/defend having romance options of different sizes. I’m sorry if you’re dealing with unhappiness that’s connected to body image, if that’s where the negative emotions are coming from, but even so I can’t meet you on that level and pretend it’s a problem that needs an answer. A girl who simply isn’t thin being a main love interest is just not an unreasonable concept. Also, Tamarack isn’t a lesbian. Yes, she can date a female MC, but that doesn’t undo her actual sexuality, so I’m not sure where that one part at the end was coming from.

Step 1: 2006 Step 2: 2011 Step 3: 2016 Step 4: 2021

And we don’t currently plan on making a game like that. The Our Life series exists to be a safer environment for people to play around in and if we did do a brand new series that was harsher edged it’d be something more fantastical and/or plot-driven instead of a different type of modern day slice-of-life growing up story. I’m sorry.

Step 4 will be coming out very soon! OL2 is gonna take until 2023 to be anywhere near completion. But we might episodically release the Steps one at a time as they get done instead of waiting for three to be finished before launch like we did with the first game.

Hi, fabellevixxi95! They are talking about TTXS 200719′s episode, for those who are wondering when did this ask happen (yes, I know, I do answer late).

First of all, there are a lot of CPs featuring dd with a lot of people. His old bros from UNIQ, any female with whom he interacts beyond a “hi”, DZW, etc.

(There’s a really noteworthy douyin from DZW explaining the concept of “CP” to his mother: “when you’re very good bros, people start naming your friendship as CP, (...) like the one I have with WYB”. Golden).

I really can’t judge anyone for adhering to a CP, since it’s the same thing I’m doing, but leaving hateful comments, insulting, and outright refusing to back down and apologize for their insults is not right. Be careful of those people, sometimes they aren’t even fans, but antis trying to stir up problems. Don’t engage, block and report if they’re going against the guidelines of the platform they are in.

Okay, since that part is out now, I leave my thoughts about this CP under the cut.

Disclaimer: fake fake fake.

To be honest, I looked into dd-CX CP out of curiosity, to compare a little bit. I couldn’t even find the name of the CP at first, but it was apparent soon enough as to why: they use the same bjyx initials with the “xiao” being CX’s name. However “bjyx” as a CP name has long been taken over by bxg.

I think many people prefer him being with CX (or any other female celebrity actually) because of 2 reasons:

Homophobia. It was difficult for me to realize that a lot of people are lowkey homophobic. They won’t say “ew, gays”, but they’ll say “it’s obvious he’s with a girl instead of with a man, he can’t be gay”. They are much reluctant to admit the possibility of anyone being in a relationship with a person of the same gender, though they’ll often defend themselves with something along the lines of “hey, I have many queer friends, I’m not homophobic!”

There’s a type of fan (let’s call them gf-fans) that fantasize with the possibility of being their idol’s partner. This, in gg and dd’s case, happens much more often with female fans, who then will grasp at straws to continue believing that their idol is completely straight. Thus why they’re much more willing to see a CP with a female idol (when they accept that their idol might not be single): they feel much more identified with a female than a male.

There’s also a curious phenomenon with these “girlfriend-type” of fans: imo, they’re much more open to an hetero CP because they know it’s just rumours and that it’s much more likely to be false, so that fulfills their fantasy of maybe someday meeting their idol and making them fall head over heels in love with them.

(That’s why many bxg pay a lot of attention to what mtjj outright refuse to discuss about. Like hotpot).

It has often been commented that dd’s CP with CX is one of the most “solid” ones, even though CX has said:

She and dd had collaborated twice in a couple choreographies by the time she went for the first time (prior to dd’s birthday special in 2018) to TTXS, and she said both times they hadn’t said a word to each other outside of work.

She called dd “modern monk” in his birthday special last year, and said that he lacked interest in women.

They started to get along much better when they hosted a skateboarding variety show together in 2019, most likely due to shared interests and work related issues. That had to make the CP reach its peak, because I don’t think I’ve seen a lot of these fans nowadays.

(They got comfortable enough for dd to say that she is very heavy, because he couldn’t carry her princess-style, which she didn’t appreciate at all. Trust me, no idol would have liked that).

Dd started to treat CX as a friend, so it probably made people’s eyes fall out of their sockets, because his interactions with women are scarce and very controlled. It is to the point that some fans say he must be gay because of the nature of his interactions with women.

But... I kind of understand him? People tend to forget that he grew up in South Korea, at the age when boys and girls start to interact and make friends with people of the opposite gender. The majority of the boys usually play with other boys and most of the girls play with other girls, specially in countries so conservative as China or South Korea (it’s a generalization, but it’s what happens 🤷‍♀️).

So, at the age when boys and girls start to mingle, he was in South Korea, living in an all boys dorm and studying with other male trainees (from what I know, mixed dorms are extremely hard to find even for university students), in a society where skin touch between a boy and girl with no romantic relationship is frowned upon. I’m aware that there’s a spectrum of types of couples, but even holding hands is rare for some couples there (let’s leave the sexism that still exists in those countries for another day, but they certainly have room to improve in that issue).

Moreover, dd, for all he is bold when no words are required, is quite shy. He’s coming out of his shell, but many of his interactions with women come from a time where I think it was more shyness what made him “cold” (and many people had said that he’s shy rather than cold, and dd himself says “I’m a slow starter” meaning he needs time to be familiar with other people).

That’s why, from my pov, his stilted, uncomfortable interactions with women (in the past) steems from the environment he grew up in + knowing he’s being observed all the time. There’s a video of him dropping a pen, surrounded by girls in skirts in an event, and to pick it up, he drops carefully, facing away from the girls, and keeping his eyes locked on the pen.

(I’m leaving my own speculation about their sexuality for another post, but just as a spoiler, I’m between gay and bi, leaning towards gay for some reasons).

All in all, dd is a playful person with his friends. He has every right to be however he wants. The fact that he’s comfortable enough to tease his female coworkers is just proof that he’s grown out of his awkward phase and that he has found people he likes to work with, no matter their gender.

The fact that some people take friendship as a CP is a phenomenon that will gradually dispel once he works with more women. I really don’t understand the blind RPS with no real proof (beware of fanservicing), but I’m fine if it’s the CP of their project, ofc. So I hope the fans who want him to be straight because it fits their image of him or whatever reason can just accept that he’s living for himself, not for their fantasies.

(this is kind of a follow up idk) i also feel like. idk if you remove the Miss Ogeny of the author dandelions whole womanizer schtick is less abt just attraction as is and more abt him being a libertine and treating romance like a game. like it doesnt matter if he actually wants the person hes flirting with it matters that They want Him. idk what im trying to say other than dandelions a horrible narcissist and it doesnt matter if he likes women like hcs are hcs just dont make him het

i agree with this take. a lot of the time, it seems as though fans try to overlook his cheating and rewrite it as him just being polyamorous with open relationships. i think this subject especially is different for everyone on how they feel about cheating - for some, it might be a trigger, and so i feel like everyone should just engage with this subject how they feel is best for them.

for me, i think dandelion’s cheating is representative of his largest character flaws - arrogance and flightiness/noncommitiality. speaking from a canon standpoint, he thinks he’s better than others he engages in relationships with or flirts with (you can see it in how he engages with them thoughout the series), and seems to be never actually emotionally vulnerable with any of the women he dates, and jumps around from partner to partner making promises but never fulfilling them. as you said, “[he treats] romance like a game. it doesnt matter if he actually wants the person hes flirting with, it matters that They want Him.”

to me, it seems like an extension of his stage persona, he flirts using poetic flattery that’s really completely devoid of any true substance. of course, this relates to how sapkowski seems to equate committment in a relationship to true love (again, canonically speaking, yennefer and geralt for instance are not a “good relationship” in the beginning, solely because they can’t commit, and this is where their various behavioral issues stem from).

it also is of course part of his comic relief, the concept of a poet in poetic love being actually primarily driven by lust and not by love is humorous, on albeit a basic or primal level. additionally, “man gets his comeuppance from his partner for offending her love” is also a comedic trope. this can have a variety of executions and it depends on context to me whether it’s offensive or not - to me, scenes like the beginning of eternal flame are funny because of how the dialogue is comically melodramatic (with insults flying), dandelion is obviously in no position of power over vespula and is not violent at all, and the whole thing is treated comically in a “no one got hurt, this is petty drama with comic supporting characters” sense. i’m able to find humor in this because no one is the butt of the joke, except dandelion, who has wronged his lady and now must face the consequences, which defangs the idea of cheating in my perspective. of course, others might disagree, this is just my personal response to scenes like this. i try not to read too much into dandelion’s canonical love life scenes other than treating them as comic relief, because i feel that is their intended purpose (for example, i have seen takes that anna henrietta sentencing dandelion to execution was abuse on her part... to me this feels extreme and i’d rather just see it as the humor it was intended to be, for reference i just explained why i am able to find it funny and accept that others may not be able to).

but back to the subject - yes, i think that dandelion’s cheating and wronging his partners is more representative of his character flaws, and this is why i think they need to be acknowledged when addressing his character. if you remove the context of cheating and say, “see, he is only ever flirty and sweet,” i think it removes a lot of the imperfections from his character. and these imperfections are significant, because he later demonstrates commitment and humility in other ways -- mainly to geralt, who he follows into brokilon in time of contempt.

as an aside, i find their dynamic interesting on dandelion’s side partially because of dandelion’s behavior elsewhere - he never gets emotionally attached to the women he engages with, but for geralt, he’d risk his life constantly just to be by his side, and also bare his “true self,” not putting on poetic airs and acting truthfully to who he is? it’s partially due to just the misogyny in the writing and dandelion’s character (like how yennefer never really spends time with geralt so their relationship by the end seems like we skipped 10 years of relationship development), but the dynamics still stand.

for this subject specifically, i think it just needs to be treated with a lot more carefulness than “we can erase this, he’s just very flirty and promiscuous, hey, he’s bisexual now,” because as you said, this is pretty biphobic. i think it’s fine to headcanon dandelion as bisexual, i headcanon him as bisexual, but i think there needs to be more process involved in coming to the headcanons, or the headcanon needs to be entirely divorced from his behavior.

i headcanon him as bisexual for different reasons, not because he’s promiscuous, that factor is besides the point. i’m willing to accept his canon relationships with women and i also read subtext between him and geralt, so, logic has it that i see him in canon holding intimate relationships with both women and men, that’s bisexuality. i think he also represents in the series a great love for people overall, he seems to find beauty in the world where others would rather overlook it.

tldr dandelion’s love life in canon demonstrates his character flaws and needs to be analyzed with more depth than the biphobic “he’s lecherous, thus bisexual”. as you said, he treats romance like a game, and this is unrelated to his sexuality. derive your sexuality headcanons for dandelion elsewhere than his promiscuity.

well the book (and movie, too) are primarily based around aging and death, and like. wasted life i guess? the way i see it is a cautionary tale about not expecting life to work out the way it does in the media you consume. how you'll do so many things, and in the end it doesnt really matter because we're all going to die. which, honestly it seems like a total bummer, and it DEFINITELY IS LIKE.. DONT GET ME WRONG THIS MOVIE IS SAD... but it has this interesting positive nihilism about it. like you see this character going through this and you're like... yea. ok I'll do everything this character ISN'T doing. ill not get so caught up in my own expectations with how things should be in my head, and ill just live my life the best i can. try not to get held up by unbelievable expectations but ALSO to not let myself wallow in how depressing that whole concept is. its a strange thing to pull from this movie but that's what i think tbh.

the movie tends to lean toward a narrative about how media affects our lives and how we as people Are the media we consume? like how it simultaneously affects us and our lives and how we are as people. alongside a lot of commentary about how like... Our Opinions on media are literally never our own, theyre always influenced by the people around us. which doesnt seem like a stretch since Kaufman spoke in detail about that concept. its also kinda funny and weird and meta because thats literally what im doing now. i read up about this movie after i watched it, had ppl explain to me what the hell happened in this film, abd only THEN did i realize 'oh hey i actually like this and these are the things i took from this film' its really interesting.

its also about our relationships with others? or its also about how we perceive ourselves, others and our own memories? how you can know someone one day and then years later not even remember their face? you could even argue a more feminist theme surrounding how men view women, which IS a substantial theme in the movie but its only brought up a couple times, although the entire movie is about how Jake views the Young Woman. also the theme of loneliness and connections to the people in your life, which kinda ties into the theme of relationships. like there's. a Lot of. things in this movie its almost a bit TOO busy tbh.

a lot of the movie centers around references to media, specifically the musical Oklahoma. ive never seen Oklahoma buuut I'll just assume theres some thematic ties in there, especially since the song use in the film seems to be a song a Bad Character sings (Lonely Room). i dont think ive seen anyone analyze that yet uhhh... but listening to the lyrics and the lyrics 'the sun flicks my eyes/it was all a pack of lies/im awake in a lonely room' which definitrly reflects. whats going on.

the movie is better around the second viewing of it, but its like. HORRENDOUSLY pretentious so definitely go into it with a somewhat clear mind and an ability to Focus or else you will get completely Lost. just dont go into this movie expecting anything linear.

Im not the person who asked before about ann walker but i very much enjoyed reading your answers. This may sound like a completely dumb question but like, how were there so many wlw in halifax? And did anne ever write about how she detected(idk lol?) who might be gay coz surely misinterpreted signs could end very badly? Or did she just not care coz all the wlw came to her (tbf who could blame them lol)

hey :) okay, so, I’m gonna answer as best as I can but to understand why and how Anne Lister managed to get all those girls and get away with it I’ll have to touch on some subjects that are not directly about her, and are more about the time period and the society of that time.

This documentary Revealing Anne Lister (shout out to the anon who suggested it to me) does a really good job of explaining how girls and women acted towards each other in the 19th century. Anne went to an all girls boarding school and, as they say in the documentary, it wasn’t unusual for girls to act in a sort of “romantic” way towards each other, they were expected to “experiment”. These “romantic friendships” were socially acceptable, and even considered necessary to prepare them for marriage. Most girls eventually grew out of it, but not Anne Lister. She had her first experience during this time. She shared a room with a girl called Eliza Raine, they soon started a (serious and sexual) relationship, calling each other husband and wife. Anne Lister strongly believed that her attraction and love for girls wasn’t just a phase.

She usually courted women like a man of that time would. She took on that role in the courtship and in the relationship as well, we could say that she did act like a “gentleman” with every woman. Besides, she was really clever and charming and this had quite an effect on women (even married ones). She was really discrete in public but she did take risks in private. She physically stood out, she walked like a man, dressed in all black and talked with a deep voice. It’s safe to say that her gender and her sexuality were matter of speculation amongst people who knew her (this means that, probably, some women she got close with had heard rumors about her at some point, they were not as naive as we’re used to believe). The fact that sexual attraction between two women wasn’t even considered possible worked in her advantage (female homosexuality? what? is that a thing? lol), and let’s not forget that she was privileged: “Anne Lister’s identity was defined in the eyes of others by class, land-ownership, dynasty and education, not by a sexuality (whose name) had not yet been invented’”. All these elements helped her live the life she wanted.

She flirted a lot, and flirting would include: talking about traveling, books or telling curious anecdotes. One of the ways to try and make her intentions clear with women was to state that she “shall never marry” (”I had said I was at no time likely to marry – how far she understood me I could not quite make out”), she also wrote a lot about how women didn’t fully understand what was happening to them when they were starting to fall in love with her (”she already likes me, perhaps she scarce knows how [much]” - “I think she already likes me even more than she herself is aware.” - “She already feels towards me she scarce knows what, & is surely in the high-road to being in love. Yes, I think she will take me. I see I must be uncommonly & fastidiously delicate”). Besides, she didn’t do all the courting let’s be real, we only have her perspective but clearly all the women she had didn’t just passively fall at her feet (for example: Ann Walker used to buy books Anne Lister was interested in reading, and then lend them to her, that was a way to show interest).

The concept of “romantic friendship” was a real thing back then, two respectable, wealthy, unmarried women, who lived together as companions was not weird at all (I think they were all lesbians tbh and I do think that in those cases the relationship was not just platonic but also sexual). Things didn’t go so smoothly in Anne Lister’s case when she did the same thing with Ann Walker because she [Lister] didn’t look conventionally feminine and so people talked and speculated (and also, Ann Walker’s family wanted to have control over her money and with her moving to Shibden they couldn’t, so they acted like shit, they used to call unannounced at Shibden to see Ann, even refusing to shake hands with Anne Lister).

So, basically, the answer to how she managed to get all the girls and live freely can be found not only in how she navigated life, unashamedly and fiercely, sustained by her “uncompromising rejection of heterosexual marriage”, but also in a society and in a time in which words to label what she was and what she was doing didn’t exist, people couldn’t attack her, and of course her social status and her name made her respectable. When in Gentleman Jack they make her say “We are friends. We are respectable women who are friends, and that is the beginning and the end. And if we continue to present ourself unashamedly in that manner, then the whole thing finally will reflect badly only on Mrs Priestley.” that’s true, that’s how things were back then.

I think this quote from Gentleman Jack: The Real Anne Lister really summarizes everything and says it all: “Anne had eleven woman-to-woman sexual relationships in her lifetime (…) Anne’s social circle consisted of a diverse group of women. All of her friends were well bred, educated and, in the main financially privileged. They paid visits to each other, often staying with each other for weeks at a time. They would talk, gossip, socialise, ruminate, argue, fall out, make up, progress and grow their relationships, be it platonic or sexual. Within this group, a healthy and fluid attitude towards sexuality allowed Anne’s sexual relationships to flourish”.
