I viscerally hate how the Duffers treat most of their non white or queer characters and I hate even more viscerally, how y'all big byler blogs in your circle jerk of other 5 big byler blogs casually like to ignore many red flags the show has.

Y'all like to say: "tHe DufFeRs ArE gReAt WrIteRs" and it's like girl, who are you lying to??? They aren't top shit writers at all. The Duffers are pretty mid imo. Yeah, they run a good show that's fun to watch and theorize abt , but that doesn't mean they're good writers cuz they're not.

1. they completely side lined Will during s3 for the sake of their straight romances: lumax, jancy, mlvn, duzie and partly stobin (even if stobin wasn't endgame, thankfully, Steve's intentions were clearly wanting to date Robin and they gave it a lot of screen time). Will was sidelined bc he didn't fit the straight romance plotline bc they planned to make him gay or whatever. Now in s4 Will and his feelings have been used as mlvn toilet paper. Yes, we like to say this is build up for byler but canonically, Will's feelings have been used to clean the shit mlvn leaves behind.

2. Billy was sympathized a lot during the last 2 seasons. They gave him the sad backstoryTM in order for ppl to feel sorry for him. Billy's backstory is literally Jonathan's but whatever.

3. El's anger issues are constantly girlboss-ified. They down play her bullying situation and literally just use it for El to be a ''girlboss" without realizing how triggering that is. As someone who has lived bullying, seeing it be ignored by canon and fanon is super sad. The whole Rink-O' Mania experience must have been so traumatizing for her yet, everyone absolutely forgets abt it 🤷🏻‍♀️

4. Robin, Erica and Argyle are stereotypical characters. Robin is the quirky lesbian with social anxiety, Erica is the badass black woman and Argyle is the Latino stoner that sells weed to white kids and works as a pizza delivery guy.

5. Altho Argyle and Eddie both do drugs, (Eddie actually sells K-12 to a minor and nobody batted an eye. He has a huge fan base). Eddie is held in a pedestal bc "poor thing 🥺 he lives in a trailer with his uncle 🥺". Tell me a single fact you know abt Argyle that isn't "he smokes weed", "he is Jonathan's only friend", "drives a van" and "he works at a pizzeria". Exactly, Eddie is given a useless backstory and Argyle isn't.

6. Dustin stopped being important to the plot sometime around s2 and s3. He is only there to curse and be mildly funny. My guy needs to hangout with ppl his age cuz he only hangs out with seniors.

7. El needs to stop having so much "I'M THAT BITCH" screentime like I need in s5 for El's arc to not just be her becoming more powerful and falling in love with Mike. I need the Duffers to explore her trauma and problems.

8. Angela should have been run over by the van.

9. Patrick should have been given a backstory that isn't the basic "strict black parents that hit their kids cuz they are a disgrace". Patrick's backstory is actually racist af, fight w the wall.

10. As Lex already said, they didn't trigger tag the ep where Jason and his friends assault Lucas and Erica. Like wtf? Why was that necessary? Why did I have to see a black boy being held at gunpoint by some white guy?? Was it relevant to the plot?? I don't think so. And then I've got to see ppl online be like "Jason wasn't that bad. He was just mourning" like bitch you can stfu. This is what happens when you make the racist assholes conventionally attractive.

Also the fact that Lucas's arc is fulfilled by him fist-fighting Jason and "embracing his weirdness" aka accepting he is black. His arc was not fulfilled at all cuz that ending spoke so loud to me. It showed how little empathy ppl have towards the struggles poc ppl living in the Midwest have. Y'all circle jerks can only see racism when it's super obvious.

Furthermore, parents complained when ST showed "an excessive amount of smoking" yet nobody batted an eye when Billy tried to run over Lucas, when Erica (an 11 y.o ffs) was chased by white kids or when Lucas was held at gunpoint by Jason.

All of this happened while they focused on Max's guilt and mourning that, yeah, are important but certainly not less important than racism!!!

11. In s3, they gave us that whole Nancy vs The Bigots arc that was honestly just triggering and useless. It didn't help Nancy's character at all, quite the opposite it put unnecessary angst.

12. Lonnie being presented as an abuser just for him to never be spoken of again. Can we please get to explore the trauma he left the Byers's with?

13. The fact that both queer relationships are considered "sloppy seconds" is extremely sad. Both Vickie and Mike are rebounding from their failed relationship with Robin and Will. These 2 ships have caused more commotion than Jancy and Jopper together! (These last ships are technically sloppy seconds too but everybody forgets that. Shocker!!)

14. Last but not least, ppl blame Argyle for being the one to get Jonathan into smoking weed as if Jonathan probably wasn't the one looking for it. Let me tell you, that you only find weed if you look for it.

I just think ofmd is a fandom that is gunna have a lengthy legacy, and I feel sorry for you if you are apart of the history of this fandom that is worthy of shame.

It's shameful to treat others poorly because you disagree with how they enjoy a character.

A character that, btw, is well loved among the cast and crew of Our Flag Means Death. Vico loves Izzy. Taika loves Izzy. David Fane loves Izzy. The writers love Izzy. No one on that entire team has suggested they feel anything but respect and appreciation for the effort Con has put into Izzy and Izzy's role as a foil.

If you are seeking an example of how we should treat one another as fans, you need look no further than the love and respect demonstrated among the cast and crew of this beloved show.

This show is rife with queerness and so many layers of the queer experience explored. David J even suggested fans pay attention to the love story happening between Izzy and Ed upon a second watch.

So I feel sorry for you that you choose not to be apart of that, if you choose to reduce your capacity for appreciating queer experience to just Stede and Ed's romance.

I feel sorry for you that your prejudice against Izzy puts you at a distance from enjoying this fandom and the show fully.

I feel sorry for you if your needless hatred of Izzy puts you at a distance from some of the best art and writing in the fandom, and may even undermine your own creativity, as judgmental attitudes often do.

I feel sorry for you if you are a person who has chosen to make other fan's experience harder based on your reduced capacity for the variety of queer experiences, especially when we turn off this show and must face a world that wants us as queer ppl dead.

I know the bad actors agree that their behavior is shameful, because they don't direct their cruelty at the highly visible cast and crew who celebrate Izzy. Just his fans, who, in their logic, do not matter.

It takes emotional maturity to change your mind when you no longer have a valid reason to stick to a belief. None of these characters are real, we don't have to hold them accountable to anything.

If you no longer believe you have a reason to hate Izzy and his fans, you are welcome to stop and move on to something else.

I dont think it makes you happy. I don't agree that ppl "love" to hate Izzy. Most ppl who hate Izzy seem demonstrably unhappy to me, and that feeling of unhappiness is what they tend to spread to others. Especially when their hypocritical bullying tendencies isolate them from one of the most accepting and non judgmental corners of the fandom.

I want you to know, you can always change your mind. You don't have to like Izzy, but you can let go of hating him, free yourself of all that needless anger. Even if you're not ready to let go of hating him, you can set boundaries with yourself about how you will engage with the fandom, to remain respectful and carry yourself with integrity.

You can distance yourself from other bad actors if they put pressure on you to engage in behaviors you know are shameful. If you want to have a different, more peaceful experience, you have the power to create it.

You can change your mind and reject being apart of the shameful side of this fandom's legacy.

ok so far it's like. fine? which is lowkey sad coz i wish it was smtg i really liked but it hasn't gripped me yet which is a shame but yknow. early days. i'm giving it time since it's only 15 episodes so far

my main issue is like. i really wish it wasn't so obviously influenced by bbc but it just so clearly is which is a shaaame like it's better than bbc in every aspect but yknow. not a high bar to clear. like it kinda feels like they liked a lot of things abt bbc and set out to fix the bad parts (h&w friendship being nonexistent, the mysteries being shit) but just kept the rest? in some places keeping things that were invented by bbc which is. baffling tbh

i'm not really picky when it comes to h&w personalities like i think it's fine to just do whatever you want w them, i think it's really fun when an adaptation gives them different personalities than what you're used to but, and this is where it feels far too bbc-ish for comfort, i just don't like it when sherlock is a cunt for no reason? like. he's not a mean person he's only mean in bbc coz moffat thought house md was cool and ripped it off. can we stop making him mean pleeeease 😭 he's just some guy..................

h&w relationship wise it's like... ok so i tend to go into adaptations with a fully clean slate so like i never let my general attachment to them influence how i view them in specific adaptations, the work itself needs to sell me on both the characters and the relationship and like... here neither of those really happened yet which makes me sad coz i think by now it should've but i'm giving it time. at least they're friends and i like that watson is useful for cases/knows things holmes doesn't sometimes coz thats like. such an essential element to sh stories for me and a loooottt of adaptations tend to just completely forget it so that's a win but idk if anything they're too tame? like i dont expect a romance but they can't just be casual friends they need to be bat shit crazy about each other. to me. but like maybe that'll develop over the rest of the podcast we'll see

What are your thoughts on webtoon obsession with the reincarnation female mc who was send back in time b4 she died and vow to get revenge on those who wrong / isekai where mc wait up as protagonist or villainess of her favorite story?I never really read them, more like heard ppl reactions to them or just speed read through certain chapters to see the fuss or see a terrible character I heard about suffer. I knows the remarried empress is popular but I heard of how some ppl stop reading because the mistress who stole the mic emperor husband was a slave who want power to protect herself and it despite the slavers as good people. I also watched videos about the problematic aspects of that genre like colorism, leading into European beauty standards, and racism depiction of poc.

I personally think that there's a cultural discrepancy with webtoons/webcomics that follow such a trope.

Like, almost all of them are made by korean authors/artists, but they don't take cues from korean culture at all (or asian culture in general). Why, though? I wouldn't the mind the genre and its clichés at all if they at least bothered to be more diverse.

You know the MOTHER/Earthbound series, right? Have you ever wondered why its aesthetics aren't eurocentric (but rather more Sci-Fi and modern in comparison), despite Shigesato Itoi himself loving Dragon Quest and being clearly inspired by the series? That happens because Itoi didn't knew anything about fantasy eurocentric elements and got more creative in his approach, molding the games closely to his experiences as a developer and as a person.

Just because it's a villainess story, that doesn't mean it should be always set in Not-Europe. Villains exist in every genre and ethnicity BEYOND Fantasy and eurocentric ones; why not work around that?

Also, why do these webtoons always have to involve romance? What if the reincarnated villainess decides to get her shit together and change her ways to avoid an unsavory death? What if the villainess uses her power and influence as a political figure to combat against injustice (slavery, racism, unrealistic beauty standards, etc...) and wants to introduce democracy? What if the villainess is sapphic, ace/aro or non-monogamous? What if the villainess just doesn't want to conquer kingdoms and is willing to give up her royal status to live a commoner's life?

And what about the drama and mind fuckery that comes with reincarnating in another person's body and having full access to their memories and intimacies? The horror that comes with briefly experiencing the cold and dark embrace of Death before entering a new world? The uncertainty and anxiety that comes with being able to start anew in your new body and identity?

Surely there are other issues that are much more concerning and interesting than who's kissing who in a story.

i dont think that everyone who enjoys a piece of media needs to be writing 1000 word meta on its Totally Deep Themes TM or ~deconstructing its use of visual metaphors~ or whatever but as an aromantic person i think im more than a bit justified in complaining about how so much of fandom culture is centred around shipping to the point that finding content about the themes/narrative/character development/storytelling/etc for certain pieces of media rather than what two characters people think should be fucking is nigh impossible.

and i get that this wasn't what your original post was complaining about at all nor do i particularly think you were considering an aromantic perspective on this at all, which is fine, but i feel the need to make it very clear to you that not everyone who bitches about how fandoms are too obessed with shipping is some pseudo-intellectual wannabe media critic or a homophobic 'why cant two guys just be friends anymore? type, although those are obviously equally deeply annoying problems too

So uh this is prob gonna come off as rude. but like, I understand that Marinette has done a lot (and I mean a lot) of questionable things. But like, she’s well-meaning and always apologizes in the end once she realizes the flaw in her actions and the ppl who it has hurt??? Yes, she shouldn’t have done a lot of things that she did, but 1) when she attempted to break in to Adrien’s house (again not at all okay, but maybe if the firefighter had done his job and told her off, it wouldn’t have happened at all) she was genuinely concerned about Adrien’s safety because she didn’t know how far Lila would go yet. And when she sent the video confessing on the same day Adrien’s mother died, she acknowledged this was an awful idea (“today is the worst day to do it, Tikki!”) but Tikki had convinced her otherwise. So again, not intentionally hurtful.

I just think that if you’re gonna give Marinette a lot of flack for the mistakes she made and learned from and made up for, you could at least acknowledge the stuff Adrien has done, didn’t learn from, and didn’t make up for (sexual harassment (and assault), enabling, etc, etc.)

Honestly if you want to see blogs where Adrien's shortcomings are acknowledged than you should just search the Adrien salt tag. I do think most of the blogs are dogshit because they flanderize the worst parts of Adrien to the extreme in an obsessed desire to circle jerk about why they hate him so much, but they do feature that kind of stuff if you feel like that its a problem you have with Adrien. I could try to compromise and include this stuff, but I don't want to, mainly because that would compromise on the prompts I make focusing on Marinette.

On that note, I want to go on record and say that I made this blog because aside from my personal hatred of this character, I did as a "fuck you" to all the adrien salt blogs where there are millions of posts about how he's a sexual stalker (even though I think its complete dogshit and those blogs only came about because of Adrien's high road comment from oblivio because "OH HE DIDNT IMMEDIATELY SIDE WITH MARINETTE SO HES BAD") but never a single post about why Marinette is also a shite character.

I made this blog specifically for that reason. She had a planner tracking Adrien's every move (which was then hastily retconned 4 seasons later when it was pointed out as being a planner for all her friends) and has made multiple plans to try and seduce (or woo) him without so much care for his actual input in the matter, yet cant for the life of day simply ask him out. On that note, she would often go out of her way to prevent other girls from being with him, and even though some were rat bastards like Lila, it sure as hell wasn't care for her friend that inspired her to slander Lila in front of Adrien as Ladybug, causing her to cry and run away in Volpina. It got to a point where Marinette's desire to try and romance Adrien actively fucked over other characters, such as Juleka in Reflekdoll and the boys party in Party Crasher. She didn't HAVE to break into his house in Oni-Chan as she could have called him (or ask Nino if she could call Adrien) and warned him about Lila, but no she did it her way because fuck the rules when Marinette wants Adrien.

No I do not care season 5 is out, they are only stopping it so we can have some fake reverse love square drama bullshit that will be undone by the end of the season I SWEAR ON IT.

Even putting that aside, Marinette is also just a shite hero. Aside from some moral obligation to be a hero and being smart, there's nothing about her that remotely heroic, and most times fucks things up whenever the villains even get a single brain cell since most normal akumas are morons. She relies on others to help her win fights yet can be fucked to try and trust others and make the team work beyond demanding people to be her meatshields, to the point where even her partner that she worked with for 3+ years was getting fed up with it. Yet the second she messed up and cant rely on someone to save her sorry ass from a mess up, all she can do is cry like a bitch as some villain makes off with the entire miracle box. 3 years of hero experience and she ends up crying like a bitch.

But it doesnt matter anyway because everyone loves Marinette so much that they easily forgive her alter ego despite her MAJOR FUCK UP. Everyone in the show is obsessed with Marinette and Ladybug, to the point where they are even obsessed with her getting together with the supposed boy of her dreams, EVEN HER FUCKING EX WHO SHE BASICALLY GHOSTED FOR HALF THEIR RELATIONSHIP. As Ladybug its even worse as everyone is so happy and trusting to her (minus the villains) despite the fact she failed for 3 years to catch the one dude making all the butterflies, not because she was bad, but because she didnt try tracking him down, only confronting him when the villain himself stuck out his neck and got greedy.

I could talk about other stuff I dislike about her, but im just gonna sum it up and say that she's a Mary Sue in a world where there's no main protagonist to replace. If any other character was the main hero, she would be that character in a SI fanfic that ends up overtaking the main hero with her bullshit powers. THERE I SAID IT

On that note, im not changing my mind about how I feel about Marinette despite how much EVERYONE ELSE in the fandom wants to coddle her, and if you wanted Adrien salt in a MARINETTE SALT BLOG you should just look somewhere else. Also I didn't ignore your post so there's that I suppose.

something i remembered... back in the day, ppl hated rigby bc he didn't return eileen's feelings at first. i'd have to rewatch the show, but apparently rigby mainly avoided her, not sure if rudely or not.

and yeah, this is about fictional characters, but in real life a lot of ppl - especially women - are seen as mean or cruel for not liking the "nice" person (or guy) back. that, and ppl who aren't interested in a romantic relationship with anyone are seen as unhappy and lonely.

we're told that we'll only be fulfilled once we enter a romantic relationship. in other words, we have to find our soulmate, someone who'll stay with us for the rest of our lives. and all of this is still reinforced by the media we consume: we expect high school crushes to be the only true love; sometimes even young children are told they'll marry their crush one day. if we (mostly women) have too many romantic relationships, we haven't found the "right" person yet, or our relationships aren't healthy. and again, if we don't want to be with anyone romantically, we'll be unhappy forever, or maybe one day we'll change our minds.

what i'm saying is, stop demanding ppl to be in romantic relationships with someone they don't feel anything for. stop demanding ppl to be in romantic relationships PERIOD. stop making "friendzone" jokes or memes. stop hating on love interests who are uninterested in the main character. stop waiting for your unrequited crush to return your feelings, because they likely won't, and they're not a bad person for it. just... respect them. please.

She does like to read! However, the library was a public area to the rest of the palace and if there are specific books she liked would have to take and read them in her room.

Ends up spending more time in the library (it is very nice and cozy) while Vexx is at the palace since he acts as a kind of buffer

While she enjoys reading romance books she would often feel bittersweet after reading them.

So, instead, gravitated to fantasy books as well as maps and atlases/dossiers on other planets and countries.

Katiya listens to all kinds of music, and likes doing so. Hate to be a basic bitch but i think pop would be her favorite genre, it has a lot of songs she can sing along to.

She is very good at singing. Has good projection and control, and was trained for many years (it's hard not to be good when you have a decade+ of training under your belt.)

However, she doesn't really believe her voice is all that good; the only people who were remotely encouraging or impressed were Nerissa, her tutor, and later Vexx.

She can play many instruments but gravitated towards string instruments and favors the harp.

so, I was never interested in the hunger games when the movies first released (and I'm not a big book reader, so i didn't know it was a book first). But mainly because it was advertised to me as a love triangle teen romance.

and I'm so mad that that's how it was advertised. because, because of you reblogging so many gif sets and ppl talking about the prequel movie, I actually sat down to watch them and they're so good? It's so much more than a frivolous teen love triangle. Like, the love story isn't the main plot of the story at all and it was still so heavily marketed as such where I live. I was a huge fan of The Hunger Games when I was about 14. I've read the books and went to the cinema to see the first and second movie but with time I grew out of it (and other YA stuff) and I haven't even watched last two movies until now. I had to rewatch the first movie for my master thesis and I decided to watch them all this time. I'm also planning to watch the prequel soon 🐍🦅

I get what you mean when you talk about the love triangle. The thing I hate the most about YA is the amount of love. And yes, The Hunger Games are more than romance but still the amount of it is annoying to me, especially now when I'm older. Like, Katniss is a teenager trying to survive under a regime, she's fighting for her life, she is forced to murder other children and she's taking care of her family. I really feel like the trope of her being in a love triangle is not needed there at all... Especially that she is portrayed as a type of girl who suually doesn't get lots of attention from the boys but of course she suddenly has to choose between two. 🙄 I also don't ship her with Peeta for lots of reasons and I do like Gale which is an unpopular opinion but it's not like I think she should be with him either; not after everything that has happened at least. I'm not asexual or aromantic but I do believe love is overrated and I am sick of romantic relationships being literally everywhere. Sometimes when I watch older war movies, I am surprised how none of the subplots are romantic, meanwhile nowadays almost everything has to have some romance and it's bleeeeh if you ask me 😅

However, the books and movies are more than this love triangle anyway but a huge part of social media and the fandom shallowed the plot to the "team Gale" vs "team Peeta" and it's sad tbh.

Long story short; I am not a fan of YA anymore, I am way too old to relate to it but The Hunger Games are really good for the books and movies of that genre. I wish the discourse in the fandom was focusing less on the romance between Katniss and Peeta and focus more on the depths of some characters like President Snow, President Coin, Plutarch or Gale himself who has a very interesting trope but it's being overlooked because of the hatred that a huge part of the fandom holds for him.

By the way, I am a bit scared of watching the prequel because President Snow is my favourite character and I am scared to see him being portrayed by another actor but also I don't like the story (from the trailers at least)... Once again they gave him some *heartbreaking romance* story that was supposed to turn him cruel or whatever and in my opinion this is making his character shallow instead of giving him depth. Like, can we already stop making everything about romantic love? 🙄

God, where to begin. I tend to end up anywhere in between indifference and vehemently hating most popular ships in fandoms, but some big ones I can think of that I do actually wish I could enjoy in some capacity are Itafushi, Sanegiyuu, and Renruki

Like... with Itafushi, I honestly can't even pinpoint why I don't like it (especially because I adore Itafushikugi but something about Itafushi by itself is just... so 'meh' to me). Like by all means I should enjoy it, and I certainly don't hate it, I just don't like it much. Maybe it's because most of the time when I see it, the way it's done feels wildly out of character for Megumi? (and sometimes Yuuji though to a much lesser extent). But idk, I don't get it, and Yuuji, Megumi, and Nobara come as a trio, Nobara simply cannot be excluded in any way, it's not fair

Sanegiyuu is.... *sighs* okay so. I get it. From a purely canon perspective I completely and totally get it and maybe even somewhat agree. Sanemi and Giyuu end up together, but that's because they're the only ones left and neither one of them can fathom being with someone who doesn't Get what they went through. If it's depressing, and a somewhat shitty relationship, I get it. However, just casually shipping them because it's fun? Because they have potential feelings born from anything else? Absolutely not. It stops making sense in every capacity. Sanemi would never like Giyuu that way, and even if Giyuu liked Sanemi, he's too emotionally stunted to ever do anything about it. It only works if they hate themselves and are one bad thing away from ending it all post-canon when everyone else is dead. That is the only time it's acceptable. But... I do wish I sometimes liked it other capacities and got what all the fuss is about (but tbh I feel that way about Giyuu in general, even outside of ships)

And Renruki is just. Ugh. The romantic relationships in Bleach are only somewhat handled well (which idk I guess the only three you have to choose from that are actually canon are Ichihime, Ginran, and Renruki, but I do actually enjoy the former two), but something about Renruki just irks me, which really sucks! Because I adore Renji and Rukia! I love their relationship! But... only in a platonic sense. I just don't see or understand a potential romance there, and ppl always complain about Ichihime not having enough build up but man... Renruki really came way out of left field imo. Like yes Renji and Rukia were always unbelievably close but it was always in a platonic sense, there was never any romantic tension between them and then they were confirmed at the end of the series? Don't get it. Don't get why people enjoy it, it was lame and bad and imo made their relationship feel cheap.

I'm not one to get angry and post opinions on shit but i get sO mad when someone says a queer movie or book was written "to make straight ppl comfortable" ESPECIALLY if said queer media was written BY a queer person.

Idk abt anyone else feels abt it, frankly i dont want a debate, but that phrase, to me, sets a precedent that inherently, queer ppl just existing make every straight person uncomfortable. And that, the only way to be authentically queer, is to be their stereotype of what straight people think LGBTQ+ ppl should be.

The beautiful thing about existence is that there is no ONE way to do it. And just bc a character in a piece of LGBTQ+ media isn't what stereotypes tell everyone a queer person should be doesn't mean that it was created to make straight ppl comfortable.

If a straight person is uncomfortable w an LGBT person nothing will make them like that person because it isn't about PERSONALITY or STYLE it's about their deeprooted homophobia and those who live with that are still going to hate the story or character no matter what.

And if your hangup on a piece of lgbtq+ media is that is doesnt feel authentic bc it doesnt mirror your experience, or it doesnt include some tragic homophobic backstory or public hazing, then i'm sorry but fuck off? Personally, i don't want every lgbtq+ thing i consume showing how hard and difficult it is to be queer sometimes. I want the happy endings, the corny romance. Why cant we have that? Huh? A Few Years Had Passed, the BL Genre has Changed Alot... Yet I Still Love Romantica

But seriously, if you love something, is it necessary to have a reason? xD Can't I love something merely because I want to? Like, you don't need to have a reason to like fried chicken amirite?

Ahem. Anyway. Long post ahead.

First of all, it's merely because of a certain shot.

After seeing this for the first time, I was like "This is going to be one of my faves for sure. I'll enjoy every seconds of it. I believe this is a story that I will never forget. I'll constantly look forward to knowing the two and their story more and more."

Proud to say, this still rings true even now!

I have already listed the reasons why I love them so much, so I won't do it again in this post. But for this time, I'll explain why I still love them even after several years, even after I've transitioned from a teen to an adult which would affect my tastes over time, even after I've seen more BL works... even after knowing that there are things that other BLs managed to pull off better.

Flashbacks to the 2000s which I assume was the golden age of this series, where it was the only "watchable" BL anime back then and Sakurai Takahiro did a phenomenal job in portraying Misaki. Almost all of the fujos in internet would at least have heard of this series, and naturally it was massively beloved that 90% of the fujos would hold it as the no. 1 in their top BL list. However, since it is popular, of course there will be a fraction of people who strongly hate it because of a certain scene. Hence, citing it as the epitome of toxic BL lmao.

But of course, things will constantly change as time passed, just like how it's growing evident that BL is only consumed by cishet women is a huge myth, as queer men themselves have started to voice their love towards the genre as well. And it is also possible for ppl who aren't interested in men to enjoy BL, such as the straight guys, lesbians, and asexuals.

Likewise, BL itself is also evolving - newer ones are more aware about the idea of consent although some may still clueless of how healthy relationships work (relationship is more than just sex!). While this may sound subjective, technically there are more and more quality BL works to consume nowadays. In case you are bored with the slice-of-life BL, there is a plethora of fantasy and horror BL out there to choose, moreso when you're aware of webnovel sites like Syosetu. Isekai BL? They're out there.

And it isn't just from Japan, China and Korea are also capable of producing good BL as well. Even BL is getting praised for the more genuine M/M representation compared to how it's generally done in the West (coughcough performative diversity coughcough).

And it doesn't stop there. The series doesn't even need to have a BL label, the MC can still be gay, and the gay romance can still happen despite the plot not centering around that.

There should be no reason to think that it isn't possible for two men to fall for each other nowadays, the teases shouldn't amount to nothing, which alot of non-BLs were guilty of back then. Well, I'm talking abt series that would tease two male characters together but the creators will allow them to be anything but gay for each other. The only time you'd see them as canon gay is in doujins or fanfics.

Hence, you'd only get canon gay couples from series that have been labelled as BL. Luckily, it's no longer a reasonable thing to do in 2021 onwards.

So, thanks to this new golden era of BL or LGBTQA+ representation, since there are so many quality works to indulge yourself, the Junjou Romantica series is getting outdated. I believe alot of the new generation haven't even heard of it ahahaha. When compared to other BL, I'll admit that Junjou won't even fit to be the best or the worst. I'm not saying that Junjou is bad, but it's simply because there are so many BL works now compared to in 2000s. To the point I bet they would discover Junjou because of sheer luck.

Now, I'll get to the point. Why I still love Romantica through these years? Well, just because there are more and newer BLs, doesn't necessarily mean that it is better. While it's true that there are stuff that other BLs do better such as the plot, the characters, and the art, there's something that Romantica does better than others too, in my opinion. That is, Misaki and Akihiko's dynamic.

I love how Misaki and Akihiko are characters of their own whilst loving each other very much. In many BLs I've seen, the dynamic doesn't feel equal, where the MC is generally too busy to think about the ML most of the time (to those who are unfamiliar, it's referring to the main love interest), whereas the ML serves no other purpose to the story other than being the MC's love interest. In comparison, as the MC, Misaki's POV is always 90% USAGI-SAN USAGI-SAN USAGI-SAN in every chapter although he faces different problems every single time. As for Akihiko, yea he loves Misaki so much but his character arc isn't limited to that. As outdated as the series would be, this aspect of their relationship, will always be timeless to me.

I've grown to love them so much, that I'll get happy from merely seeing them. Yea I do understand that others will get disappointed of the slow and repetitive plot, the bad art, not to mention after waiting for months for the update, spending money to get it... but all I think when looking at new acts is "OMG it's my babies I miss them so much T-T".

So yea, that's it. I don't ask much, I just want to see Misaki and Akihiko, and nothing more.
