i love rewatching firebringer because you can hear the audience get dead silent for the chorn part. all the laughter after that part is either slightly quieter than usual or much more hysterical than usual (because of the leftover shock of chorn). can you imagine. you spend months excited to watch starkid's newest musical about prehistoric society and in the last ten minutes it very briefly becomes a beautifully sung scifi opera before it IMMEDIATELY dovetails back into the emotional arc of the show. i would lose my shit.

Why I think Chorn from Firebringer could legitimately be Webby and the Lords in Black’s mother:

Chorn is some sort of unspecified eldritch being, as evident when she sings “the face of man I’ve worn, disguising my true form” could that be an eldritch, godly form perhaps? She also says that she is “from which your world was born”, which is definitely the words of a god. She gives the humans knowledge to advance them as well as naming what fire is - helping them but also contributing to climate change, showing good and evil aspects of her character.

But how do Webby and the Lords tie into this? Well, Webby is described as a ‘Queen in White’, not THE Queen in White, A Queen in White, and Chorn wears white, so what if Chorn was the first Queen in White and this title was passed down to her daughter? Also, Chorn is super chaotic, what if that’s why the Lords in Black are so chaotic as well? Because their mother is the only role model they had?

Team Starkid has confirmed that the Lords in Black and Webby have parents, and there’s already a sort of connection to Trail To Oregon through the Watchers, so it isn’t completely crazy to think that Firebringer could play into the Hatchetfield canon.

Now: Heroes of Olympus (and Apollo)

Jason: History Has Its Eyes on You from Hamilton. This song is SO JASON-Y I can’t put it into words. And it could be him talking to someone else or someone talking to him. You pick

Leo: One of These Days from The Jonathan Larson Project. While this isn’t a musical song per se, it’s from Jonathan Larson’s collection of songs meant for musicals he couldn’t write (since he died). Anyway this fits Leo because it has all of the Inventor’s Fury and thoughts of inadequacy he could think of.

Piper: I’d Rather Be Me from Mean Girls. It’s her “revolt against the system” mindset (thats my only defense for this one)

Drew: What The World Needs from Ride the Cyclone. Her TLH “pick me energy” is STRONG with this one. I love Drew but you can’t deny how terrible she was in that book.

Coach Hedge: God I Hate Shakespeare from Something Rotten. I don’t need to defend myself.

Hazel: Winter Blooms from Alice By Heart. This is all completely hypothetical and that is because I know within my HEART and SOUL that Hazel was an Alice’s Adventures girlie. So that means she gets a song from a musical about a girl that uses Alice as an escape (it’s really good look it up). And also the lyrics just seem like something she would say idk

Frank: Stronger from Finding Neverland. It’s his girlboss-glowup era after those Cows

Reyna: Dangerous to Dream from Frozen. Picture this song over her traumatic backstory. Thank me later

Octavian: My Friends from Sweeney Todd. It’s his shabby tendencies (rip Panda pillow pet you were a real one)

Apollo: Chorn from Firebringer. Enough said.

Firebringer is so underated in my opinion. It has probably the most thematically consistent, as well as consistently good music in all of Starkid's musicals. The characters are all really fun, and the humor is still really funny. Schwoopsie still gets me laughing my ass off to this day. Even aspects like the costuming are fire. (Haha, get it?) Don't even get me started on the Snarl puppet, its so neat.

Also, the Chorn ending is fucking SPECTACULAR and I won't take any criticism on that.

currently reading: im not currently reading anything bc i've had such a busy week, but i just finished Yours, Kindred (funnily enough by thelastplantagenet) and i want to read this Caphrey fic and this Patcap fic next!!

favourite colour: green and purple are in a direct tie and always have been <3

last song: the entire firebringer sountrack, if i had to say which one specifically i think its Chorn. I often listen to that and into the night on loop.

I want to talk about more Hatchetfield connections I found in Firebringer.

Let's start with Chorn since it's the easiest.

Chorn reveals that it caused the lightning strike that gave Zazz fire.

Then it gives the tribe all of its alien knowledge of the future. Earlier, Molag said that lighting didn't work that way. Chorn made it do that with its ship. Who's to say it can't make lightning-like photon charges do other things. Like give a certain biology professor a vision of the apotheosis. When Chorn gives everyone its knowledge, it's touch does appear to be sparky. There's also this post by @hatchetfieldtheories suggesting Chorn is the lords in black.

Now let's do Molag.

Molag is the narrator of Firebringer. I think she has a connection to the black and white. This first became noticeable to me when she told Zazzalil what to do and what not to do with the fire. It felt very familiar.

I believe that whenever Molag takes a break from finding the end of the Earth, she enters the black and white and narrates. She's also able to interact with the audience, similar to Wilbur.

These are all the connections I found but feel free to add more.

also just like. more and more, i am convinced that the way i headcanon cosette's personality isn't just interesting for me but is actually canonically supported? like, yes, she's the most classic Blonde(tm) i can think of, but also i think she's always aware of her situation and how she can affect it in a way that marius, bless his heart, just isn't. and i have receipts!

[tried to make this a bulleted list but tumblr mobile apparently CANNOT handle those anymore so! guess we're doing this formatting now]

first off, the entirety of in my life. "what's the matter with you, cosette?" shows a self-awareness that i wouldn't expect from her if she were just her archetype. immediately after, she laments how she doesn't know what her situation is, and it's making her antsy. later, she questions her father about his past, and he blows her off in a way that implies she's asked these questions before. she also criticizes him for seeing her as a child, which he ignores. (specifically i'm thinking of the way she says "i'm no longer a CHILD, and i long for the truth that you know!")

secondly, the general theme in a heart full of love of marius representing doubt and cosette representing stability. see: "i am lost" / "i am found", and "do i dream?" / "i'm awake". later, she actually seems to lead marius to realizing this is real, beginning the "and it's not a dream" line and then letting him join in.

then there's the attack on rue plumet. which, okay, we know i am obsessed with, but also the cosette characterization implied there FASCINATES me. let's go over the events of that song and the previous one from her perspective, shall we? she meets her idiot love-at-first-sight at her gate and has a beautiful duet with him. then, while she's gazing soulfully into his eyes, they hear a scream. he appears to recognize it, identifying the screamer as his friend éponine, who's trying to warn them that someone's coming. (ignoring the possibility that she recognizes the name as her childhood friend's,) marius disappears and immediately her father shows up, panicked about the scream. cosette, without hesitation, shifts tunes to a comforting song, claims that it was HER scream, and then uses her childhood melody to slip in the fact that it was three men she saw that he should look out for.

it's my theory that she does this -- literally and musically aging herself down -- to calm him down, because there's no way she did it out of the joy of her heart: she literally SAYS several songs earlier that she doesn't enjoy being treated as a child. the only reason it DOESN'T calm him down, why it instead makes things worse, is because she accidentally trips over his javert feelings, something she also told us she doesn't know anything about.

and then, of course, there's a heart full of love (reprise). where marius is drowning in his sadness and unanswered questions and cosette tries to pull him out of it. she starts off with their love melody (a heart full of love) and then reminds him, "and it wasn't a dream", which marius actually! starts off with her, instead of her having to pull him into it! she sees how he's feeling, sees how to pull him out of it, and does it successfully! i am a big fan of looking at when characters use leitmotifs and whether they're doing it "on purpose" -- i don't think valjean and javert, for example, use each other's tunes on purpose, i just think they're similar. but cosette is definitely someone who would be aware of what leitmotifs she uses, or as "aware" as a character in a musical can be, and i like that a lot about her!

oh ALSO i recently realized for the first time that hades challenging orpheus to not doubt eurydice on their way back to the surface is... him challenging orpheus to be better than hades himself. just like orpheus will always turn around, hades will always grow jealous again. hades let persephone go to the surface because people were starving but now cannot bear to have her leave him to go to the surface... orpheus lost eurydice to the underworld because she was hungry but now cannot believe she might follow him in the dark again...... i am thinking INTENSELY

StarKid and Musical Score

While all StarKid musicals have great music, both songs and score, some do it better than others. All could be classified as, or have elements of, rock or pop musicals, so it stands to reason that the “piano guitar bass drums” combo is the most common. When a musical goes beyond that, with more varied instrumentation or different styles or exceptional callbacks to songs in the score, I really take notice.

So far in this Rewatchers With a Thousand Eyes event, we’ve had The Trail to Oregon, which really just adds a country twang in the songs and score while still using the standard instrumentation (there could be banjo, or at least a guitar that is played to evoke a banjo). The songs are great fun and play with style a little (”Dysentery World” is an acid trip and “You Gotta Go” is an Irish ballad), and there’s some nice scoring that callback or preview songs. I’ll touch on the others as they come, but I’m going to focus more on the few that really stand out to me. This is the first post in this series, paying tribute to the unique music of Firebringer.

The music of Firebringer caught my attention immediately, especially hearing it live in the theater. Written by Meredith Stepien and Mark Swiderski and score by the incredible duo Clark Baxtresser and Pierce Siebers, the music combines standard modern pop musical elements with rhythmic percussion effortlessly. As both Meredith and Mark are percussionists, and I too am a percussionist, it’s no wonder they wrote such cool music and I enjoyed so much!

I’m not a professional musician, just a band geek and amateur percussionist of 16 years, so I don’t feel confident doing a full analysis. Instead, I’m simply going to list some underrated musical moments in Firebringer that showcase the unique, fun, and technically stellar work of Meredith, Mark, Clark, and Pierce.

The very first thing you hear is Meredith killing it on the bongos. Go off, queen.

The harmonies!!! Meredith really loves crunchy harmonies, and there’s oodles!

Excellent use of marimba, glockenspiel, triangle, tambourine, and more percussion (thank you to Jon Jackson and Nick Kabat) throughout the whole show, especially in “What If”, “Welcome to the Stone Age”, “The Night Belongs to Snarl”, and “Paint Me”. I’m not used to hearing marimba in much of anything, movies or musicals or otherwise; in fact, most people don’t even know what it is, which saddens this marimba player deeply.

The staccato bass guitar during the inner thought moments before Zazzalil attacks Snarl both times--highlighted by Nick Gage's angelic vocals, “Time is frozen now!” and “Did you see that spark upon the wall?”. It builds just the right amount of tension that is released with the full ensemble.

“The Night Belongs to Snarl” in a major key playing while Emberly and Keeri pet a sleeping Snarl. Adorable.

The droning synthesizer chords, reverb effect, and twinkling notes in “Chorn”, giving it an otherworldly sci-fi feel immediately. Marimba and drums are also used in this song, as it’s a melding of the human and alien civilizations. This is what I wished Starship and ANI had included more of...

The rim shot every single time Schwoopsie said her name.

The use of instruments for sound effects, like a bell for a “lightbulb” moment.

Looking ahead, the next show that I’ll make a post about is Twisted. I’ll touch on Holy Musical B@man!, but there’s a lot to unpack with Twisted and it deserves its own post.

Can you rant about the chorn twist please? I hate it and it’s nice to see that someone else does too

oh fuck yea lets go

disclaimer: i mean no offence to / have no ill will towards people who do like this twist, this is just my own analysis and opinion. i dont want to start discourse here and probably wont respond to any counter-arguments.

so i dislike the chorn twist for 2 main reasons:

1 - its a poorly executed twist

2 - it goes completely against what the rest of the show is saying thematically

a good twist does not come out of nowhere. foreshadowing exists for a reason - so that the twist, while being unexpected, still makes sense. a twist should also add to the story, in my opinion. the only things you could take as foreshadowing are the joke about lightning not working like that and chorn naming fire. this is, in my opinion, not enough, and both would still make sense if the twist didnt happen. there is no indication that there is anything more to the story than what is presented, and barely any indacation that chorn is more than it seems. personally, i do not look back at firebringer and think, 'oh in hindsight that ending makes sense', i think 'i like this story but why was the alien stuff tacked on to the end?'

as for twists adding to the story, that brings me to my second point. ive actually talked about the chorn twist in relation to the shows themes here, (as well as why the repsise of 'the leaves fall from the trees' lines in particular pisses me off) but i will reiterate.

i know firebringer is first and foremost a comedy, but there are some - in my opinion - really beautiful themes in there too. progress, questions, just the nature of humanity as a whole. if anyone wants a thematic breakdown of firebringer hit me up but for now i'll just say that thematically the show was resolved by zaz and jemilla learning to work together, and thats demonstrated with the defeat of snarl. the conflict between them was not about progression and finding answers themselves, but how to progress and find answers. that's an important distinction, because what the chorn twist does is resolve the former, which does not need resolving. They had just figured out how to move forward, when all the answers were simply given to them. it feels hollow.

now im not sure how cohherent that all was, so think of it this way:

you've been preparing to make a one-of-a-kind art piece for weeks - picking the right colours, doing trial runs, getting your friend's opinions. and then just as you're about to start one of your friends gives you a piece just like you were going to make and tells you they've been an established artist for years and had this art ready the whole time. sure, you have the end product you wanted now, but all that prep you did is for nothing.

Has anyone talked about how firebringer might be related to the hatchetfield universe? Maybe chorn moved back in time to escape the lords in black? Maybe the firebringer land is the same place as hatchetfield, and she travelled back in time to understand why hatchetfield is such a hot spot?

I haven't actually been watching nightmare time but I'm living vicariously through your posts until I get time to actually watch it. So hopefully this makes sense and actually connects it. It jumped into my brain last night and hasn't left since!

This is such a good point! All we know is that Chorn cames to have come from space so I'm wondering if their could be a pokey connection since he comes in on a meteor and in yellow jacket they reference having found essence of pokey (or something to that effect in space)

Also we know that both Pokey and Chorn have mind powers, and maybe when she taps them to give them knowledge they actually get hivemindified and that's why the end of Firebringer happens through song and why when they say 'we know Chorn told us with its mind' they all speak in unison like Alice and co in TGWDLM

But yes I love the idea of Chorn having some sort of Lords in Black/Black and White connection if nothing else because I always felt Chorn was a bit randomly tagged on at the end and I love the idea of her having a proper connection
